Self Disclosure And The Self
(4) Description of Experiments: Self–Disclosure and the Presenting–Self and the Perceived–Self
Building upon a classroom experiment, I chose a self–disclosure test tor couples and two
examinations of the presenting and the perceived–self. This required some modification to the initial
exercise in the case of self–disclosure for couples; I utilized my own relationship for that
experiment. The subjects are both Caucasian, in a long term relationship, aged 45 and 48
respectively. Experiment (A) Self–Disclosure Findings Male, Caucasian Aged 45 The subject seems
to be relatively comfortable dealing with conflict and approaching touchy subjects in the
relationship. In general, the subject discloses and informs his partner when he doesn't ... Show more

The subject recognizes that her partner chose you because you of her uniqueness, and understands
that her partner (like everyone else) needs room to be the individual that he is. This approach
certainly should allow them to reach a high level of closeness in their relationship. Caution is
however to be exercised; the subject must be sure that she considers her partner 's feelings and
communicate in a non–aggressive way. She shows the capacity to resolve a conflict and be pleasant
at the same time. The preceding couple has great potential to have a meaningful and honest
relationship; however there is much to work on. Both have developed strong opinions and
personalities, compromise will be difficult at times. Experiment (B) Presenting–Self and the
Perceived–Self Findings Male, African–American Aged 30 The subject displayed great dichotomy
between the presenting–self and the perceived self. Outwardly the subject's identity persona is
bright, outgoing, articulate and friendly. Inwardly the subject is wracked with self–doubt, insecurity
and feelings of inadequacy. The subject has no small amount of shame regarding his sexuality
(homosexual) and goes to great lengths to keep this part of his identity concealed. Considering he
has been in a long term relationship, this is an

The Social Penetration Theory: Summarized and Identified
Using Research, Media and A Personal Example
Intro
If one was asked to describe the social penetration theory, the best example would be an onion. Just
as an onion requires its layers to be exposed to reach the core, social penetration requires a similar
type of unraveling. The social penetration theory deals with the progressive disclosure of one's true
self to others and the world. Individuals have many layers that ultimately combine to form a shield
that protects the true self at the core (Tang and Wang, 2012). In recent years social penetration has
been examined through many virtual interactions due to the digital age. In a study conducted by Jih–
Hsin Tang and Cheng–Chung Tang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also shown that in the depth scale that bloggers disclose more to their best friends (average of
60%) versus parents (average 40%) and online users (20%) (Tang and Wang, 2012). Overall it was
found that bloggers disclose more to their best friends versus parents and online users. The study
concluded that bloggers are more open in their private lives than they are on the web.
Media
Furthermore, social penetration is depicted in our everyday lives through the interactions we have
with others and how others interact with people. We indirectly learn about social penetration through
different forms of media such as books, videos, news, and most importantly films. Films provide a
reflection how to effectively and ineffectively disclose information. An example of a film that
depicts the social penetration theory would be 21 Jump Street directed by Phil Lord and Chris
Miller. In the film Jonah Hill plays an undercover cop named Schmidt who develops feelings for a
character named Molly. The scene that clearly shows good social penetration is when Schmidt
develops enough courage to call Molly and have a conversation with her. In the scene Schmidt is in
his room and uses his cell phone to call Molly. She picks up and immediately asks who is on the
other line, before Schmidt can respond his mother gets on the line and tries to make a phone call.
Filled with embarrassment Schmidt screams for her to get off the

Full Disclosure
This issue of full disclosure to patients regarding errors and information about treatment is delicate.
On the one hand, patients have the power to exert their autonomy in making decisions about their
health. On the other hand, doctors are responsible for educated and informing patients and the
community regarding issues. I believe that, taking into consideration both sides, doctors are
responsible for providing all information necessary for a patient to make a fully informed decision.
In addition, full disclosure of errors is vital to ensuring the patient maintains autonomy in his or her
life.
During training as a physician, it is important to not only obtain the knowledge necessary for the
career, but also to obtain the ability to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By ensuring patients are fully informed about procedures with risks and benefits, the consequences
of minor errors are drastically reduced. Though Baylis (1997) admits that many professionals
believe that disclosure of errors leads to loss of confidence in the physician or even medicine in
general, this is usually false. According to Matlow, et al. (2006), "the preference for full disclosure is
almost universal." This thought goes hand–in–hand with informed consent. Patients wish to be
autonomous, especially regarding their health, and to withhold information diminishes their
autonomy and trust in the physician. In addition, to assuage professional opinions, Popp (2003)
found that admission of error typically reduced the financial liability of a hospital drastically
compared to when no disclosure was present. This honesty also leads to a discussion of causes for
the error rather and potential improvements to avoid the same outcome for future cases. Morbidity
and Mortality (M&M) conferences at hospitals seek to do the same thing and simultaneously
educate many in the field to reduce stigma of equating error with personal flaws (Matlow, et al.,

Abstract
The effects that counselor self–disclosure can have on group members and the appropriateness of
when to use self disclosure will be explained in this paper. The author will discuss the ethical
dilemmas that may arise when counselors divulge too much information, as well as a discussion of
what the client's perceptions may be of such disclosure and the positive and negative effects that this
may have on therapy.

Such disclosure alleviates the patient's shame and embarrassment, provides positive modeling,
normalizes the patient's experience, and provides hope (Wosket 1999). However, when a therapist
discloses their experiences to the client fully, then the mystery that the therapist once was to the
client decreases, and the person the client once thought the therapist to be changes enormously with
some obvious consequences. The client may learn the extent to which the therapist and client are
similar and to what extent they differ in thoughts, hopes, and the past. The client may learn of the
therapists needs, enabling the client to decide to help or to ensure that the therapists needs not be
met. The client learns the extent to which a therapist's morals and ethical standards deviate from
their own leaving them vulnerable (Hopps & Pinderhughes 1999). Although burdening the client
with the therapists thoughts, expressions and feelings would not be helpful, the therapists should be
aware of their own feelings and then decide rather it needs to be expressed or is even appropriate to
express (Wosket 1999). Listening is really the key to group facilitating. Listening should not mean

Abstract
This paper begins with a general idea of self–disclosure by therapists and the importance of keeping
the client's needs first. It covers many aspects of self–disclosure including ethically what to look for
in the motives of using self–disclosure with a client. There are other aspects of self–disclosure
which include transference and countertransference which are issues which need to be attended to
immediately for the therapist to remain objective and not react to a client. Therapists must be
cautious in disclosing information and make sure it is relevant to treatment. Beneficence and
nonmaleficence are important things to consider when self–disclosing and the therapist must be
educated, well trained, and have experience before considering self–disclosure. Also included in this
paper are different orientations in relation to self–disclosure. Those orientations include Adlerian
therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, feminist therapy, and relational therapy. Although these are
only a few orientations,

What Is Self-Disclosure?
Apart from the typical self–disclosure that exists between friends, there is another form of self–
disclosure that occurs due to a threat or pain. As Derlaga & Berg (2013) describes, people describe
their feelings, dreams and aims to other people due to various reasons (Derlaga & Berg, 2013). For
example, people can disclose their feelings as a result of pain or anger. In this film, Pia discloses her
feelings to Viru, his father due to anger of the pestering pressure he applied on her brother that made
him commit suicide. Self–disclosure resulting from anger ruins a relationship rather than develop it
because the information conveyed during the disclosure moment is usually negative. Although the
recipient may experience remorse and take responsibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Self–Disclosure 1 Self–Disclosure in Relationships We as individuals' decide what, when and to
whom, and how much to disclose personal thoughts and feelings. Although level of self–disclosure
and personal relationships are not synonymous concepts, self–disclosure plays an important role in
constructing what kind of relationships individuals have with each another.1 Self–disclosure,
depending on reactions of relationship partners, also plays an important role in validating self–worth
and personal identity.2 The best place to begin is with a definition. Self–disclosure is the process of
deliberately revealing information about oneself that is significant and would not naturally be

There are four levels of communication that suggest why relationships can be frustrating.
Sometimes the communicators might never get to the levels of personal opinions and feelings. At
other times communicators can spend too much time at these personal levels. These levels are as
follows: Clichés: Clichés are ritualized, stock responses to social situations–virtually the opposite of
disclosure. Although they sound superficial, clichés can also serve as codes for messages we don't
usually express directly, such as "I want to acknowledge your presence" accompanied by Self –
Disclosure 4 a different set of nonverbal cues, a cliché can say "I don't want to be impolite, but you'd
better stay away from me now." Whatever valuable functions they may serve, it's clear that clichés
don't qualify as self–disclosure. Facts: Not all facts qualify as self–disclosure. They must fit the
criteria of being intentional, significant, and not otherwise known. Facts can be meaningful in
themselves, but they also have a greater significance in a relationship. Disclosing important
information suggests a level of trust and commitment to the other person that signals a desire to
move the relationship to a new level. Opinions: Still more revealing is the level of opinions.
Opinions usually reveal more about a person than facts alone. If you know where the speaker stands
on a subject, you can get a clearer picture of how your relationship might develop. Likewise, every

Tax Disclosure Framework
INTRODUCTION
This research project will analyze the recent changes in the disclosure requirements for income
taxes. On July 26, 2016 the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) published for comment a
proposed Accounting Standards Update (ASU) on Income Taxes (Topic 740): Disclosure
Framework–Changes to the Disclosure Requirements for Income Taxes. The FASB had received 52
comment letters by the due date of September 30, 2016. The Board issued the amendments in the
proposed Update on Topic 740 as part of the disclosure framework project. The new ASU would
change, add, and cancel previous income tax accounting disclosure standards. The new amendments
would include requirements for all entities (public and private) to disclose certain ... Show more

They also would have to disclose the line items in the financial statement in which the UTBs
benefits are presented and the related amounts of the benefits. Public business entities would also be
required to disclose the amount of, and explanation for, a valuation allowance recognized or released
during the reporting period.
Furthermore, the proposed ASU will impact all companies that report their financial statements
under US GAAP. Some of the disclosure requirements are already part of the current Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) disclosure requirements, but some disclosure requirements will reveal
new information about reporting entities. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) (Spang and Suplee, 2016)
warns that "companies should consider how the additional disclosures may be utilized and
interpreted by various stakeholders. In addition, compiling the necessary information, particularly
for multinational corporations, may be challenging and may require updates to systems, processes,
and controls". Therefore, the implementation of the new standards on the early stages may require
additional financial resources from the business entities.
The purpose of this work is to identify strengths and weaknesses of the proposed ASU and whether

For discreditable stigmas, these individuals have the option to reveal themselves, or they can try to
pass, or conceal themselves. There are five types of concealment that were established. First,
inappropriateness, which is done in a situation where it is not relevant or appropriate. Second, lack
of a pay–off means that the individual will not benefit from revealing themselves, so there is not
point to risk causing issues. Third, deference, is usually done out of respect for others, because of
differing opinions. Fourth, avowal of responsibility can sometimes involve self–blame, sometimes

Self-Disclosure
The purpose of this post is to describe how self–disclosure can be a barrier in the workplace. Every
relationship in life is affected by a person's self–awareness and self–disclosure. Self–awareness is
the ability to recognize oneself as an individual, seeing yourself for who you truly are. Self–
disclosure is being able to let others see who you truly are. At the workplace if people do not have
either of these qualities that can become a barrier to co–worker relationships (Lamberton & Minor,
2014). Self–disclosure can only be possible when a person has a strong and healthy self–awareness.
A person without any self–awareness does not disclose anything to anyone or they disclose false
information. This can be a defense mechanism on their part to protect themselves from being hurt or
judged. People who can self–disclose let others know what they think, feel or want. Studies have

Self Disclosure And Its Parts
Self–disclosure in Relationships and its Parts And How to Improve Disclosure Jeanpaul karout
University of Nevada Las Vegas Self–disclosure in Relationships and its Parts And How to Improve
Disclosure Every romantic relationship starts when two strangers meet and learn more about each
other until they become a couple that is interdependent on one another. For this to occur, all
relationships have to go through ongoing process of self–disclosure. Self–disclosure has large
influence on liking and attraction by other. Therefore, in this paper I will define self–disclosure, its
components and what is self–disclosure between partners. I will discuses when disclosure is
beneficial, how it is linked to intimacy, and when self–disclosure may be detrimental to a
relationship. In Section two, I will find three influencing factors that have a large influence on how
we choose to disclose. First factor is attachment style and how it dictates our approach to self–
disclose. Second, factor is valence of disclosure with our partners and how important it is. Third
factor is, the timing of self–disclose and how timing is everything when we share messages with
others. In the final section, I will discuss how we can improve the valence of self–disclosure to have
better understanding of what and how we are disclosing and how other may perceive our messages.

Ethical Implications Of Disclosure
Ethical Implications of Disclosure and Nondisclosure
Being an advanced practice nurse is a huge responsibility. The profession itself is advancing and
with the Affordable Care Act moral, ethical and legal considerations of providing care as an
advanced practice nurse have increased exponentially. Ethical standards for nurse practitioner are
defined in the American Nurses Code of Ethics. Ethical standard are based largely on the individual
nurse beliefs. Because ethics are not a clear cut science, the handling certain situations are defined
by state laws. The purpose if this paper is to consider ethical and legal implications of revealing a
prescribing mistake to a patient who has no knowledge that a mistake exist.
Ethical Implications
Nurses have a responsibility to understand and operate with the confines of the law concerning
medications. However the responsibility does not end at the law there are also ethical, moral if you
will, implications. Writing prescription for patients is an integral part of providing care for patients
in today's society (Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013). Ethical concerns with prescription writing include
understanding medications and ensuring that individual prescribers take responsibility for the care
they each provide. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics Provision 3 (2015), indicates
that the nurse will promote, advocates, and protect the rights, health, and safety of the patient. This
means that when a nurse realizes a mistake has

Client Self-Disclosure
Yalom (2005) likens the concept of self–disclosure to optimal psychological and social adjustment
in a curvilinear fashion. Implied here is the theory that clients will self–disclose when they are in a
group that fosters a safe and socially supportive environment. However, self–disclosure does not
follow a direct, or linear pattern. A curvilinear representation of this idea illustrates that either too
much or too little client self–disclosure can be detrimental in a group counseling setting. Clients
disclosing too little sacrifice the opportunity of attaining objective feedback from other group
members, and the lack of universality in disclosure might hinder the opportunity of furthering a
relationship with a fellow member who reveals a bit more. In turn, those members disclosing too
little have less of a chance in being genuinely accepted by other members, ultimately affecting
personal self–esteem. To some, self–disclosure reflects the feeling of sacrificing a sense of control,
and these members may wait until others have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the pace and timing is ultimately up to the client, once revealed, the counselor can reflect
on the process and ask the client how they were able to finally share their secret. However, some
group members refrain from self–disclosure for fear of being judged by the rest of the group. Fear of
losing others' respect is pervasive in a group setting, and it is necessary at this point for the
counselor to intervene. Simone, McCarthy, and Skay (1998) surveyed clinicians on their own
practices of self–disclosure. Results of the study showed one of the most endorsed reasons for
counselor self–disclosure was to promote universality (p. 179). This finding may also translate into a
group setting, in that a leader who chooses to appropriately self–disclose to the group may empower
other members to do so as

A Review On Disclosure Practices
A Review of Disclosure Practices of Latin American Companies Abstract This paper analyzes
current practices in several Latin American countries in the areas of corporate disclosure and
transparency by focusing on the extent to which information is disclosed to investors through public
channels, such as websites. We find weak disclosure practices, which will continue to prove
problematic for capital flows and the future development of these countries. Specifically, poor
disclosure practices lead to reluctance on the part of investors to invest in these companies, high
costs of capital and poor valuations. Latin American firms should be encouraged to voluntarily

Such practices become even more important for emerging economies, as these countries aim to
mobilize capital and achieve economic growth. Among emerging economies, the Latin American
region is of significant concern. These economies struggle with below potential economic growth
and inability to attract and keep investments, ultimately leading to increased poverty levels and loss
of output which further damage investments and growth. In this context, disclosure and transparency
are critical tools that governments and corporations must focus on to help investors feel confident
about making business in the region. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of current
corporate disclosure practices in Latin American countries by focusing on the extent to which
information is disclosed to investors through public channels. We begin by reviewing the prior
research in this field, and then proceed to presenting the data collected and to interpreting our
findings. Prior Research Until recently, many believed that Latin America was a story of economic

This report will give an overview of the aim behind collecting data, types of data collected, methods
used and how the collection of the data supports the department's practices. It will also give a brief
outlook on the importance of legislation in recording, storing and accessing data.
Why Organisations Need to Collect Data
To satisfy legal requirement: every few months there is some request from the government sector to
gather, maintain and reports lots of information back to them on how many people do we have in the
organization, working hours, how much our expenses for the whole year, we should keep data stored

* Manually:
* Some data are still being stored manually, especially those documents that require signatures or
kept for the Government.
* Manual data storing is easy to use as it does not required specific training; however it takes a lot of
space and time.
* The department started to scan those documents and upload them to the virtual data base to ensure
a friendlier environment and for security purposes.
* Electronically:
* The main system used in the organisation is SAP.
* Storing data electronically via SAP is highly efficient as the data is integrated.
* The program needs to be updated only once to be implemented throughout the company.
* It is accurate and reduces human error.
* It has different keys for accessing authority.
* The downside of this implementation is its high cost. Also, it may take a longtime to get a return
on the investment.
Importance of Legislation:
* Legislation is a very important part when it comes to data recording, storing and accessing.
* The company has different keys when it comes to accessing data.
* Code of Business Ethics Policy is applied to all employees in the company.

The Importance and Use of Disclosure
In this section we will introduce the background knowledge of our topic, and we will show the
motivation of this paper by discussing related prior literature.
A disclosure is additional information attached to an entity's financial statements, usually as an
explanation for activities, which have significantly influenced the entity's financial results. In the
United States, this disclosure is usually found in the notes of financial statements, and many also can
be found in the notes section of the corporate annual report. Basically, the purpose of accounting
disclosure is to inform both current and potential investors of the accounting strategies and methods
used when developing periodic corporate financial statements.
Through disclosure, there are several effects the management wants to reach. First, managers often
issue earnings forecasts to reduce information asymmetry and therefore influence their firm's stock
price (e.g., Nagar et al. 2003). Second, managers' forecast, particularly when they involve bad news,
is aimed at avoiding litigation or at least minimizing the cost of subsequent litigation. Field et al.
(200S) find that preemptive bad–news forecasts are useful in deterring certain types of lawsuits.
Third, analysts update their forecasts in response to firms' earnings forecasts and recent evidence
suggests that approximately 60 percent of analysts revise their forecasts within five days of
management guidance (Cotter et al. 2006). Kim and Verrecchia (1994)

Individual Disclosure Decisions
In addition to analyzing the information, disclosers also consider the quality of relationship with the
audience, and predict how the audience is likely to respond when making disclosure decisions
(Greene, 2009). Typically, individuals will choose to disclose to those with whom they have a higher
relational closeness and quality, while concealing with those who are more distant. However,
situations arise that contradict these assumptions, as in the case of public disclosure of private
information. The individuals in this study disclose to an audience that varies in relational closeness.
Researchers have not yet accounted for individuals who reveal private information in public;
consequently, they do not understand what rules govern these individuals' decisions. In this ... Show

In addition to assessing the information to be disclosed, anticipated response is another method
disclosers utilize to determine whether to reveal their private information. Typically, individuals
only disclose when they have confidence in an accurate prediction of the audience's response
(Greene, 2009). Other scholars (Jellison & Riskind, 1977; Jourard, 1971b; Omarzu, 2000; Taylor,
1968) have examined the rewards by which disclosers are motivated. Omarzu (2000) named five
social rewards: intimacy, or the pursuit of closeness; social control, wherein the audience can bestow
benefits or rewards for disclosure; social approval, or attempts to increase acceptance and liking;
relief of distress, during which individuals talk about problems and negative emotions to relieve
stress; and lastly, identity clarification, which helps to clarify self–knowledge. As individuals' goals
change and they desire differing social rewards, the disclosure changes either in content or in the
targeted audience (Omarzu, 2000). In the present study, individuals disclose private information to a

Ethical Disclosure Reporting
Financial Disclosure Reporting: the Ethical Approach The events of fraudulent and misstatement of
financial data over the past decade or so have triggered an epidemic of financial concerns within the
accounting community. These scandals have created a lot of economic turmoil, not only in the
United States (U.S.), but also in other developed countries around the world. Since these events
have arose, several agencies have been seeking various ways to help reduce future events of
unethical behavior from continuing. After the WorldCom and Enron scandals at the turn of the
century, the Sarbanes – Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) was implemented in an attempt to mitigate the

financial data and how they perceive a company's financial position; however, investors are not
completely protected from financial loss, due to misstatements. On the other hand, investors can file
lawsuits against a company if there are some inconsistencies within the financial statements, which

Financial statement Disclosure Notes under US GAAP
Financial statement Disclosure Notes under US GAAP the full disclosure principle is one of the
basic accounting principles, which is an exchange of all material information integral to financial
information for the company. Companies should provide disclosure notes when they provide the
financial statement. Full disclosure notes give full information about the statements for investors and
creditors to make decisions because this note is connected with the financial statements. And also,
the notes help for managerial decisions for the next plan year. All United States companies follow
Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) disclosure rules. Under US GAAP the required
disclosures are the summary of significant accounting policy, subsequent event, and related party

The purpose of US GAAP disclosure notes is to make sure all business entities should run smoothly,

A Short Note On Non Disclosure Agreement ( Nda )

Summaries of non–disclosure agreement
A non–disclosure agreement (NDA), also known as a confidentiality agreement (CA), is a legitimate
contract between no less than two that frameworks secret material, learning, or information that the
parties wish to impart to each other for specific purposes, yet wish to limit access to or by outsiders.
It is an agreement through which the parties concur not to unveil information secured by the
assertion. A NDA makes a classified relationship between the parties to secure any sort of private
and exclusive information or prized formulas. In that capacity, a NDA remedies nonpublic business
information. (Non–disclosure agreement, 2015)
Non–disclosure is made under the will of the organizations and contracted between no less than two

unpredictable parties, for example, such as partners, subcontractors or even the Board of the

Ethical Dilemma In Social Work
Dual relationships are very controversial within all helping professions. It can bring positive and
negative components to a situation. There should always be a clear boundary and form of consent
and agreement set by the social worker, or any health service professional to their client. However in
some cases, it is vital for a client and work professionals to establish a relationship. This is an
important component for a successful session or procedure. In this paper, I will discuss the ethical
dilemma revealed between Dr. Green, the Psychologist and teacher, and the client, 19 year–old, Ava
Jones. Based upon Dr. Green's behavior, I consider her actions to be wrong but understandable.
Established by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics (COE), the
principle being compromised is the conflict of interest. Dr. Green initially formed a clear
relationship with her client when she was only her Psychologist. Dr. Green revealed to be placed
into her first ethical dilemma when she noticed that Ava enrolled in her Introduction to Psychology
class. At this time Dr. Green should have noticed the severity of the conflict of interest emerging.
She should have taken the correct steps to move forward. According to NASW COE, social workers
should be aware to avoid any conflicts of interest that interfere with their exercises (1.06a). Dr.
Green having Ava as her client and student creates a conflict of interest that interfered in both her
sessions and her classroom. Due to the NASW COE principal interest of conflict, Dr. Green should
continue to see Ava as her client, but not as her student in her class. In this case study it reveals that
Ava is currently coping through a tragedy. She lost both of her parents, she is dealing with
depression and has suicidal thoughts. Dr. Green is an individual in her life that brought her comfort
and stability. Ava believed that if it was not for Dr. Green, she could not get through her issues. The
case study later stated that Ava considered Dr. Green as a surrogate mother because she confided in
her. This is a key reason Dr. Green should keep Ava as a client. Ava sees Dr. Green as a great
resource in her life. Having Dr. Green as her Psychologist puts Ava's

Discussion Questions
1. Transparent financial reporting means that timely and accurate disclosures are made on all
important matters affecting a company's financial position and performance. It implies openness,
communication, and accountability. Transparent financial reporting protects investors because
nothing is hidden from them. Investors can better assess the risks of owning securities when
information is truthful and complete. Transparent financial reporting also improves market quality. It
enhances investor confidence. Open communication creates markets that are fair, orderly, efficient,
and free from abuse and misconduct.

5. Triple bottom line reporting refers to reporting on a company's economic, social, and
environmental performance. It is a form of social responsibility reporting designed to demonstrate
good corporate citizenship. So–called "sustainability" reports are an increasingly popular means of
triple bottom line reporting. There is substantial variation in social reporting today. More regulation
would improve comparability, but it might also stifle reporting innovations. The usefulness of social
reporting to outside parties, particularly investors, needs to be demonstrated before implementing
more regulation for it.
6. Often we expect to observe less voluntary disclosure by companies in emerging market countries
than by those in developed countries: a. Equity markets are relatively less developed in many
emerging market countries, resulting in lower total demand for company information by investors
and analysts. b. In many emerging market countries, most financing is supplied by banks and
insiders such as family groups. This also leads to less demand for timely, credible public disclosure,
and in these markets enhanced disclosure may have limited benefits.

SELF – DISCLOSURE Self disclosure basically means or refers to a form of communication
whereby one communicates the hidden self to other people or to another person. According to
Matthew McKay, Ph.D., Martha Davis, Ph.D., and Patrick Fanning, Self–disclosure is composed of
four elements: Open Self, Blind Self, Hidden Self and Unknown Self Self disclosure can be seen as
a strategy of taking the hidden self to the open self or sharing information about you with others

Furthermore self disclosure improves communication because we tend to understand each other's
messages or ideas addressed towards each other. We experience more or a lot of self disclosure at
the early stages of new relationships and experience intimate or extreme self disclosure at later
stages of our relationships. In most cases we find out that unlike men women use self disclosure as a
way of strengthening their relationships and improving communication between them and other
people. Also according to Randy Siegel by choosing to share ourselves, we have a better chance of
communicating our authentic selves and making true connections. Self disclosure can also boost
someone's self esteem which will help him in coping within the society or simply with his or her
coping abilities. Since self disclosure encourages Disclosure, it can help other people start

authors McKay, Davis, and Fanning. They include increased self–knowledge (we know ourselves to

FTC affiliate disclosure policy
TL;DR – The FTC wants affiliates to to disclose their incentive–based relationships to their

The FTC (federal trade commission) has been ramping up efforts to enforce proper disclosures of

Some considerations:
I would not be surprised to learn that Google is already rewarding affiliate websites which comply
with the FTC disclosure policy. Affiliate websites were a huge target of Google's earlier this year,
with advertising–heavy and thin–content affiliate sites experiencing big drops in the rankings
starting in February.
What's the worst that could happen? According to Linkshare's guide to affiliates and FTC
disclosures (see link below), the buck stops at the Advertiser, not the Publisher. So if the FTC was
going to make a splash in our affiliate space they would most likely issue warnings to advertisers,
and then us as publishers would receive warnings/penalties/clawbacks etc. from the advertisers and
have to fall in line.
It is worth noting that we're one of the biggest fish in the Black Friday affiliate pond, so it seems to
me that we would be a natural target of the FTC's attention somewhere down the line if our site is
not compliant.

The Pros And Cons Of Biogen Insufficiency
One issue to can be traced to Lidaret,[ ] is the idea of disclosure in a patent design specification and
this is as a result of the law of insufficiency; the concern of the patentee's is to make available in a
contractual sense a quid pro quo for patent monopoly to the public at large.[ ] This universal theory
model of insufficiency later advanced and recognised by the United kingdom and further shaped its
Statutory Law.[ ] which raises appositely as a ground for revocation the law of insufficiency.[ ] The
prerequisite of this is that any claim of invention shall establish an enabling disclosure in a patent

Kitchen J, the learned friend of Lord Hoffman therefore got it wrong and erred when he likened the

Biogen insufficiency, Lord Hoffman clarified further that the legal provisions and the EPC statutes

Quantitative Positive Disclosures With Quantitative...
Less profitable firms or high debt firms could use SER disclosures to legitimise activities to lenders
and shareholders (Haniffa and Cooke 2005). SERs can be used by managers to frame how Financial
stake holders interpret financial information, specifically to manipulate stakeholders reaction to
disappointing financial reports, by changing the focus and constructing a "disconfirmatory effect on
the financial figures" (Neu et al., 1998, p.270). Qualitative positive disclosures with quantitative
negative disclosures (Gibbins et al., 1990) can be used as a method to down play managerial
incompetence and persuade financial stakeholders to excuse past mistakes by using their ethical or
socially responsible displays to compensate. This is a contrasting view to legitimacy theory which
emphasizes an organisations need for actions to be perceived by stakeholders as legitimate (Deegan
and Unerman, 2011). In this instance, SERs are used as a method to manage a situation when the
expectations of stakeholders are not met. When an organisation fails to be perceived as legitimate,
they use SERs to demonstrate that it can only improve upon its past actions and regain legitimacy.
A factor influencing management to produce SERs would be to attract investment funds and take
advantage of the practical market for ethically responsible investment funds (Deegan, 2002). If an
organisation can demonstrate favourable environmental performance they are more likely to be

When one thinks of looking at the experiences of people who have HIV/AIDS, two things may
come to mind. The first thing may be the diversity of people who are actually living with HIV/AIDS
around them. The second thing may be is how frequently and in how many ways people with
HIV/AIDS are stigmatized and discriminated against. That being said, sometimes it may appear that
all the people who are living with HIV/AIDS may be alike in only two ways such as having
contracted the HIV/AIDS infection and being stigmatized and discriminated against for having
HIV/AIDS. Stigma and discrimination tend to cancel out all of society's empathy and humanity as a
whole. The result of such harsh discrimination and stigmatization may cause an individual with ...

If having HIV is not hard enough on a person, the experiences of people living with HIV have been
made more complex by the increase in criminalization of HIV non–disclosure. Criminalization of
non–disclosure does nothing but create more stigma against people with HIV as well as create a
deep fear in people living with HIV. People who are living with HIV are made to fear the legal
system due to their disease, they are no longer given the right to choose whether or not they disclose
to their intimate partners but they must do so in order to avoid being labeled a sex offender or
incarcerated. Criminalization is not an effective way to stop the transmission of HIV/AIDS but it is
an effective way into scaring people so deeply that they feel like they are left without any human
rights, family, friends, or dignity. That being said, saying that criminalization will prevent the
transmission of HIV/AIDS is like saying that traffic signs will stop people from speeding in regards
to non–disclosure, meaning it is not going to happen. Criminal law may be needed in some extreme
situations; for example, if a person has intent to transmit HIV to another person, but what is
happening more frequently in Canada is that there is more of an expansive use of the criminal law.
With this, the "law and order" approach does virtually nothing to stop HIV transmission but what it
does do is stigmatize people living with and at risk of HIV, and is undermining proven HIV
prevention strategies and

Self Disclosure And The Self

  • 1. Self Disclosure And The Self (4) Description of Experiments: Self–Disclosure and the Presenting–Self and the Perceived–Self Building upon a classroom experiment, I chose a self–disclosure test tor couples and two examinations of the presenting and the perceived–self. This required some modification to the initial exercise in the case of self–disclosure for couples; I utilized my own relationship for that experiment. The subjects are both Caucasian, in a long term relationship, aged 45 and 48 respectively. Experiment (A) Self–Disclosure Findings Male, Caucasian Aged 45 The subject seems to be relatively comfortable dealing with conflict and approaching touchy subjects in the relationship. In general, the subject discloses and informs his partner when he doesn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The subject recognizes that her partner chose you because you of her uniqueness, and understands that her partner (like everyone else) needs room to be the individual that he is. This approach certainly should allow them to reach a high level of closeness in their relationship. Caution is however to be exercised; the subject must be sure that she considers her partner 's feelings and communicate in a non–aggressive way. She shows the capacity to resolve a conflict and be pleasant at the same time. The preceding couple has great potential to have a meaningful and honest relationship; however there is much to work on. Both have developed strong opinions and personalities, compromise will be difficult at times. Experiment (B) Presenting–Self and the Perceived–Self Findings Male, African–American Aged 30 The subject displayed great dichotomy between the presenting–self and the perceived self. Outwardly the subject's identity persona is bright, outgoing, articulate and friendly. Inwardly the subject is wracked with self–doubt, insecurity and feelings of inadequacy. The subject has no small amount of shame regarding his sexuality (homosexual) and goes to great lengths to keep this part of his identity concealed. The Social Penetration Theory: Summarized and Identified Using Research, Media and A Personal Example Intro If one was asked to describe the social penetration theory, the best example would be an onion. Just as an onion requires its layers to be exposed to reach the core, social penetration requires a similar type of unraveling. The social penetration theory deals with the progressive disclosure of one's true self to others and the world. Individuals have many layers that ultimately combine to form a shield that protects the true self at the core (Tang and Wang, 2012). In recent years social penetration has been examined through many virtual interactions due to the digital age. In a study conducted by Jih– Hsin Tang and Cheng–Chung Tang ... It was also shown that in the depth scale that bloggers disclose more to their best friends (average of 60%) versus parents (average 40%) and online users (20%) (Tang and Wang, 2012). Overall it was found that bloggers disclose more to their best friends versus parents and online users. The study concluded that bloggers are more open in their private lives than they are on the web. Media Furthermore, social penetration is depicted in our everyday lives through the interactions we have with others and how others interact with people. We indirectly learn about social penetration through different forms of media such as books, videos, news, and most importantly films. Films provide a reflection how to effectively and ineffectively disclose information. An example of a film that depicts the social penetration theory would be 21 Jump Street directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. In the film Jonah Hill plays an undercover cop named Schmidt who develops feelings for a character named Molly. The scene that clearly shows good social penetration is when Schmidt develops enough courage to call Molly and have a conversation with her. In the scene Schmidt is in his room and uses his cell phone to call Molly. She picks up and immediately asks who is on the other line, before Schmidt can respond his mother gets on the line and tries to make a phone call. • 5. Full Disclosure This issue of full disclosure to patients regarding errors and information about treatment is delicate. On the one hand, patients have the power to exert their autonomy in making decisions about their health. On the other hand, doctors are responsible for educated and informing patients and the community regarding issues. I believe that, taking into consideration both sides, doctors are responsible for providing all information necessary for a patient to make a fully informed decision. In addition, full disclosure of errors is vital to ensuring the patient maintains autonomy in his or her life. During training as a physician, it is important to not only obtain the knowledge necessary for the career, but also to obtain the ability to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By ensuring patients are fully informed about procedures with risks and benefits, the consequences of minor errors are drastically reduced. Though Baylis (1997) admits that many professionals believe that disclosure of errors leads to loss of confidence in the physician or even medicine in general, this is usually false. According to Matlow, et al. (2006), "the preference for full disclosure is almost universal." This thought goes hand–in–hand with informed consent. Patients wish to be autonomous, especially regarding their health, and to withhold information diminishes their autonomy and trust in the physician. In addition, to assuage professional opinions, Popp (2003) found that admission of error typically reduced the financial liability of a hospital drastically compared to when no disclosure was present. This honesty also leads to a discussion of causes for the error rather and potential improvements to avoid the same outcome for future cases. Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conferences at hospitals seek to do the same thing and simultaneously educate many in the field to reduce stigma of equating error with personal flaws (Matlow, et al., ... The author will discuss the ethical dilemmas that may arise when counselors divulge too much information, as well as a discussion of what the client's perceptions may be of such disclosure and the positive and negative effects that this may have on therapy. Such disclosure alleviates the patient's shame and embarrassment, provides positive modeling, normalizes the patient's experience, and provides hope (Wosket 1999). However, when a therapist discloses their experiences to the client fully, then the mystery that the therapist once was to the client decreases, and the person the client once thought the therapist to be changes enormously with some obvious consequences. The client may learn the extent to which the therapist and client are similar and to what extent they differ in thoughts, hopes, and the past. The client may learn of the therapists needs, enabling the client to decide to help or to ensure that the therapists needs not be met. The client learns the extent to which a therapist's morals and ethical standards deviate from their own leaving them vulnerable (Hopps & Pinderhughes 1999). Although burdening the client with the therapists thoughts, expressions and feelings would not be helpful, the therapists should be aware of their own feelings and then decide rather it needs to be expressed or is even appropriate to express (Wosket 1999). The Ethics And Self Disclosure Ethics and Self–Disclosure Michelle Creed National University This paper is being submitted to Steven Mendoza, Ph.D., MSCP in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Law and Ethics, PSY627, on January 24, 2015. Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Michelle Creed, College of Letters and Sciences, National University San Bernardino Campus, 804 East Brier Drive, San Bernardino, CA 92408. Email: mcreed3701@gmail.com Abstract This paper begins with a general idea of self–disclosure by therapists and the importance of keeping the client's needs first. It covers many aspects of self–disclosure including ethically what to look for in the motives of using self–disclosure with a client. There are other aspects of self–disclosure which include transference and countertransference which are issues which need to be attended to immediately for the therapist to remain objective and not react to a client. Therapists must be cautious in disclosing information and make sure it is relevant to treatment. Beneficence and nonmaleficence are important things to consider when self–disclosing and the therapist must be educated, well trained, and have experience before considering self–disclosure. Also included in this paper are different orientations in relation to self–disclosure. Those orientations include Adlerian therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, feminist therapy, and relational therapy. Although these are only a few orientations, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. What Is Self-Disclosure? Apart from the typical self–disclosure that exists between friends, there is another form of self– disclosure that occurs due to a threat or pain. As Derlaga & Berg (2013) describes, people describe their feelings, dreams and aims to other people due to various reasons (Derlaga & Berg, 2013). For example, people can disclose their feelings as a result of pain or anger. In this film, Pia discloses her feelings to Viru, his father due to anger of the pestering pressure he applied on her brother that made him commit suicide. Although level of self–disclosure and personal relationships are not synonymous concepts, self–disclosure plays an important role in constructing what kind of relationships individuals have with each another.1 Self–disclosure, depending on reactions of relationship partners, also plays an important role in validating self–worth and personal identity.2 The best place to begin is with a definition. Self–disclosure is the process of deliberately revealing information about oneself that is significant and would not naturally be known by others. Self–disclosure must be deliberate. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are four levels of communication that suggest why relationships can be frustrating. Sometimes the communicators might never get to the levels of personal opinions and feelings. At other times communicators can spend too much time at these personal levels. These levels are as follows: Clichés: Clichés are ritualized, stock responses to social situations–virtually the opposite of disclosure. Although they sound superficial, clichés can also serve as codes for messages we don't usually express directly, such as "I want to acknowledge your presence" accompanied by Self – Disclosure 4 a different set of nonverbal cues, a cliché can say "I don't want to be impolite, but you'd better stay away from me now." Whatever valuable functions they may serve, it's clear that clichés don't qualify as self–disclosure. Facts: Not all facts qualify as self–disclosure. They must fit the criteria of being intentional, significant, and not otherwise known. Facts can be meaningful in themselves, but they also have a greater significance in a relationship. Disclosing important information suggests a level of trust and commitment to the other person that signals a desire to move the relationship to a new level. Opinions: Still more revealing is the level of opinions. Opinions usually reveal more about a person than facts alone. If you know where the speaker stands on a subject, you can get a clearer picture of how your relationship might develop. Likewise, every time you offer a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The FASB had received 52 comment letters by the due date of September 30, 2016. The Board issued the amendments in the proposed Update on Topic 740 as part of the disclosure framework project. They also would have to disclose the line items in the financial statement in which the UTBs benefits are presented and the related amounts of the benefits. Public business entities would also be required to disclose the amount of, and explanation for, a valuation allowance recognized or released during the reporting period. Furthermore, the proposed ASU will impact all companies that report their financial statements under US GAAP. Some of the disclosure requirements are already part of the current Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) disclosure requirements, but some disclosure requirements will reveal new information about reporting entities. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) (Spang and Suplee, 2016) warns that "companies should consider how the additional disclosures may be utilized and interpreted by various stakeholders. Third, deference, is usually done out of respect for others, because of differing opinions. • 21. Self-Disclosure The purpose of this post is to describe how self–disclosure can be a barrier in the workplace. Every relationship in life is affected by a person's self–awareness and self–disclosure. Self–awareness is the ability to recognize oneself as an individual, seeing yourself for who you truly are. Self– disclosure is being able to let others see who you truly are. At the workplace if people do not have either of these qualities that can become a barrier to co–worker relationships (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). Self–disclosure can only be possible when a person has a strong and healthy self–awareness. A person without any self–awareness does not disclose anything to anyone or they disclose false information. This can be a defense mechanism on their part to protect themselves from being hurt or judged. People who can self–disclose let others know what they think, feel or want. Therefore, in this paper I will define self–disclosure, its components and what is self–disclosure between partners. I will discuses when disclosure is beneficial, how it is linked to intimacy, and when self–disclosure may be detrimental to a relationship. In Section two, I will find three influencing factors that have a large influence on how we choose to disclose. First factor is attachment style and how it dictates our approach to self– disclose. Second, factor is valence of disclosure with our partners and how important it is. Third factor is, the timing of self–disclose and how timing is everything when we share messages with others. Implied here is the theory that clients will self–disclose when they are in a group that fosters a safe and socially supportive environment. However, self–disclosure does not follow a direct, or linear pattern. A curvilinear representation of this idea illustrates that either too much or too little client self–disclosure can be detrimental in a group counseling setting. Clients disclosing too little sacrifice the opportunity of attaining objective feedback from other group members, and the lack of universality in disclosure might hinder the opportunity of furthering a relationship with a fellow member who reveals a bit more. In turn, those members disclosing too little have less of a chance in being genuinely accepted by other members, ultimately affecting personal self–esteem. • 36. The Importance and Use of Disclosure In this section we will introduce the background knowledge of our topic, and we will show the motivation of this paper by discussing related prior literature. A disclosure is additional information attached to an entity's financial statements, usually as an explanation for activities, which have significantly influenced the entity's financial results. In the United States, this disclosure is usually found in the notes of financial statements, and many also can be found in the notes section of the corporate annual report. Basically, the purpose of accounting disclosure is to inform both current and potential investors of the accounting strategies and methods used when developing periodic corporate financial statements. Through disclosure, there are several effects the management wants to reach. First, managers often issue earnings forecasts to reduce information asymmetry and therefore influence their firm's stock price (e.g., Nagar et al. 2003). Second, managers' forecast, particularly when they involve bad news, is aimed at avoiding litigation or at least minimizing the cost of subsequent litigation. Field et al. (200S) find that preemptive bad–news forecasts are useful in deterring certain types of lawsuits. Third, analysts update their forecasts in response to firms' earnings forecasts and recent evidence suggests that approximately 60 percent of analysts revise their forecasts within five days of management guidance (Cotter et al. 2006). However, situations arise that contradict these assumptions, as in the case of public disclosure of private information. • 58. Ethical Dilemma In Social Work Dual relationships are very controversial within all helping professions. It can bring positive and negative components to a situation. There should always be a clear boundary and form of consent and agreement set by the social worker, or any health service professional to their client. However in some cases, it is vital for a client and work professionals to establish a relationship. This is an important component for a successful session or procedure. In this paper, I will discuss the ethical dilemma revealed between Dr. Green, the Psychologist and teacher, and the client, 19 year–old, Ava Jones. Based upon Dr. Green's behavior, I consider her actions to be wrong but understandable. Established by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics (COE), the principle being compromised is the conflict of interest. Dr. Green initially formed a clear relationship with her client when she was only her Psychologist. Dr. Green revealed to be placed into her first ethical dilemma when she noticed that Ava enrolled in her Introduction to Psychology class. At this time Dr. Green should have noticed the severity of the conflict of interest emerging. She should have taken the correct steps to move forward. According to NASW COE, social workers should be aware to avoid any conflicts of interest that interfere with their exercises (1.06a). Dr. Green having Ava as her client and student creates a conflict of interest that interfered in both her sessions and her classroom. Due to the NASW COE principal interest of conflict, Dr. Green should continue to see Ava as her client, but not as her student in her class. In this case study it reveals that Ava is currently coping through a tragedy. She lost both of her parents, she is dealing with depression and has suicidal thoughts. Dr. Green is an individual in her life that brought her comfort and stability. Ava believed that if it was not for Dr. Green, she could not get through her issues. It is a form of social responsibility reporting designed to demonstrate good corporate citizenship. So–called "sustainability" reports are an increasingly popular means of triple bottom line reporting. There is substantial variation in social reporting today. More regulation would improve comparability, but it might also stifle reporting innovations. The usefulness of social reporting to outside parties, particularly investors, needs to be demonstrated before implementing more regulation for it. 6. Often we expect to observe less voluntary disclosure by companies in emerging market countries than by those in developed countries: a. Equity markets are relatively less developed in many emerging market countries, resulting in lower total demand for company information by investors and analysts. b. In many emerging market countries, most financing is supplied by banks and insiders such as family groups. This also leads to less demand for timely, credible public disclosure, and in these markets enhanced disclosure may have limited benefits. In general, we expect to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Matthew McKay, Ph.D., Martha Davis, Ph.D., and Patrick Fanning, Self–disclosure is composed of four elements: Open Self, Blind Self, Hidden Self and Unknown Self Self disclosure can be seen as a strategy of taking the hidden self to the open self or sharing information about you with others which they never knew about you. We experience more or a lot of self disclosure at the early stages of new relationships and experience intimate or extreme self disclosure at later stages of our relationships. In most cases we find out that unlike men women use self disclosure as a way of strengthening their relationships and improving communication between them and other people. Also according to Randy Siegel by choosing to share ourselves, we have a better chance of communicating our authentic selves and making true connections. Self disclosure can also boost someone's self esteem which will help him in coping within the society or simply with his or her coping abilities. Since self disclosure encourages Disclosure, it can help other people start meaningful and intimate relationship with other people in the society. People tend to feel better around you after you have disclosed certain information about you and wanting to know more about you. According also to Randy Siegel's article, Self disclosure offers many rewards, according to authors McKay, Davis, and Fanning. Something to consider for BlackFriday.com The FTC (federal trade commission) has been ramping up efforts to enforce proper disclosures of endorsements online. In the affiliate marketing space, there has been growing discussion about how to be in compliance to their terms and how to avoid being penalized. Some considerations: I would not be surprised to learn that Google is already rewarding affiliate websites which comply with the FTC disclosure policy. Affiliate websites were a huge target of Google's earlier this year, with advertising–heavy and thin–content affiliate sites experiencing big drops in the rankings starting in February. What's the worst that could happen? According to Linkshare's guide to affiliates and FTC disclosures (see link below), the buck stops at the Advertiser, not the Publisher. So if the FTC was going to make a splash in our affiliate space they would most likely issue warnings to advertisers, and then us as publishers would receive warnings/penalties/clawbacks etc. from the advertisers and have to fall in line. It is worth noting that we're one of the biggest fish in the Black Friday affiliate pond, so it seems to me that we would be a natural target of the FTC's attention somewhere down the line if our site is not compliant. • 79. Quantitative Positive Disclosures With Quantitative... Less profitable firms or high debt firms could use SER disclosures to legitimise activities to lenders and shareholders (Haniffa and Cooke 2005). SERs can be used by managers to frame how Financial stake holders interpret financial information, specifically to manipulate stakeholders reaction to disappointing financial reports, by changing the focus and constructing a "disconfirmatory effect on the financial figures" (Neu et al., 1998, p.270). Qualitative positive disclosures with quantitative negative disclosures (Gibbins et al., 1990) can be used as a method to down play managerial incompetence and persuade financial stakeholders to excuse past mistakes by using their ethical or socially responsible displays to compensate. This is a contrasting view to legitimacy theory which emphasizes an organisations need for actions to be perceived by stakeholders as legitimate (Deegan and Unerman, 2011). In this instance, SERs are used as a method to manage a situation when the expectations of stakeholders are not met. When an organisation fails to be perceived as legitimate, they use SERs to demonstrate that it can only improve upon its past actions and regain legitimacy. A factor influencing management to produce SERs would be to attract investment funds and take advantage of the practical market for ethically responsible investment funds (Deegan, 2002). • 81. Criminalization Of Non-Disclosure When one thinks of looking at the experiences of people who have HIV/AIDS, two things may come to mind. The first thing may be the diversity of people who are actually living with HIV/AIDS around them. The second thing may be is how frequently and in how many ways people with HIV/AIDS are stigmatized and discriminated against. That being said, sometimes it may appear that all the people who are living with HIV/AIDS may be alike in only two ways such as having contracted the HIV/AIDS infection and being stigmatized and discriminated against for having HIV/AIDS. Stigma and discrimination tend to cancel out all of society's empathy and humanity as a whole. The result of such harsh discrimination and stigmatization may cause an individual with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If having HIV is not hard enough on a person, the experiences of people living with HIV have been made more complex by the increase in criminalization of HIV non–disclosure. Criminalization of non–disclosure does nothing but create more stigma against people with HIV as well as create a deep fear in people living with HIV. People who are living with HIV are made to fear the legal system due to their disease, they are no longer given the right to choose whether or not they disclose to their intimate partners but they must do so in order to avoid being labeled a sex offender or incarcerated. Criminalization is not an effective way to stop the transmission of HIV/AIDS but it is an effective way into scaring people so deeply that they feel like they are left without any human rights, family, friends, or dignity. That being said, saying that criminalization will prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS is like saying that traffic signs will stop people from speeding in regards to non–disclosure, meaning it is not going to happen. Criminal law may be needed in some extreme situations; for example, if a person has intent to transmit HIV to another person, but what is happening more frequently in Canada is that there is more of an expansive use of the criminal law. With this, the "law and order" approach does virtually nothing to stop HIV transmission but what it does do is stigmatize people living with and at risk of HIV, and is undermining proven HIV prevention strategies and ...
