A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary–mass object that allows lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the
surface. The Earth 's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The friction caused by the plates moving from
time to time results in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates.
There are many different types of volcanoes. (Volcanoes: Principal Types of Volcanoes) The most common are Cinder volcanoes. This type ofvolcano
occurs when particles and blobs of solid lava are emitted from a single vent in the center. As the gas charged lava is blown violently into the air it
breaks into small fragments that solidify and fall as cinders around the vent to form an oval cone. A good example of a cinder cone is the Paricutin
Volcano in Mexico that grew out of a corn field in 1943. The eruptions continued for 9 years and built the cone to a height of 424 meters.
Another type of volcano is the Composite volcanoes also known as Stratovolcano. These are steep sided volcanoes composed of many layers of
volcanic rocks, usually made from high–viscosity lava, ash and rock debris. Famous examples of composite cones are Mayon Volcano in Philippines,
Mount Fuji in Japan, and Mount Rainier in U.S.A.

that hasn't erupted in a long while but has a chance erupt again in the future (howstuffworks.com). Best example there is of a dormant volcano is
Mauna Kea which is one of the five mountains that make up the big island of Hawaii (Crain, 2009). And extinct volcanoes are the ones that erupted
thousands of years ago and has no possibility of erupting again (howstuffworks.com). An extinct volcano is mount Buninyong which is located in
Austria the last time this volcano erupted was a little over ten centuries ago and is now somewhat a tourist attraction.

lies beneath is magma that has been building up pressure for thousands of years, pushing through a crack or break in the earth's crust waiting to be
released. Once a volcano is finally relived of the pressure, it sends lava flowing and spewing out of the top. Another thing that volcanoes let off is
volcanic ash and gases that can be very harmful to any living thing if exposed to these elements.
There is more than one type of volcano. Many people think of the triangular mountain type volcanoes to be the only ones that exist, but this isn't
true. This type of volcano is known as the composite cone, such that Mount Fuji and Mount St. Helens fall under this classification. Another type is

hundreds of feet into the sky (Lindop). Early Romans believed this mountain belonged to vulcan, the blacksmith of the gods. Within the last twenty
years, a volcanologists have been working hard to learn how to predict eruptions and keep people safe. Ash plumes and steam rose into the bright
blue sky as the underground earthquake shook the land and rattled windows all across the eighteen mile town. As the jet circled the island, in view of
lovely beaches and emerald water, looming over this lush paradise was the screaming volcano. Volcanos erupt when the pressure inside of them
becomes so great that the magma surges up and forces its way out. An exploding volcano can rip apart a mountain in just seconds, when the
eruption is over, a landscape is changed forever. The united states is home to more volcanos than any other country except Indonesia, and Japan.
The majority of these volcanoes are in Alaska. Until recently, there was no way to predict when a volcano would blow, although volcanoes give off
many warning signs before they erupt. Including smaller earthquakes beneath the volcano, slight inflation, or swelling. The rising magma
eventually causes the solid rock to break, sending earthquake signals. Most volcanoes give warning signs beginning weeks or months before they

On August 24th AD 79 Mount Vesuvius violently erupted and buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The eruption of the volcano was
recorded by one of the only surviving eyewitnesses Pliny the Younger. He described the start of the eruption like this: "On August in the early

Many people underestimate the power of volcanoes and the amount of damage they can do to a country, state, city, or town. A volcano is a
mountain that extends down to a caldera which is a pool like are of magma in between the mantle and the crust in the Earth. It in a sense is a
massive hole in the middle of the crust and mantle of the Earth where magma can erupt from and eventually make its way to the Earth's surface.
Volcanoes are estimated to kill almost 1,000 people per year and caused $99,000,000 worth of economic damages from 1980 to 2008. When an active
volcano erupts its "danger zone" is about a 20 mile radius around the volcano itself, which ends up killing people, destroying houses, land, etc.
Known worldwide is the volcano of Tambora. On April 5th, 1815, many people didn't think it would be their last day of their life. This volcano has
one of the most tragic stories with the most deaths recorded by one single volcano in history. The volcano of Tambora killed 80,000 people
directly and indirectly (Farrell,J). Most of the people that died were from Sumbawa Island and a lot of people died later on due to starvation

The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. Because when viewed from above it seems tiny in comparison to the
neighboring volcano Mauna Loa, Kilauea was originally believed to simply be a satellite of Mauna Loa instead of a distinct volcano. Research that has
taken place during the last decades, however, shows that not only is Kilauea a separate volcano, but its magna–plumbing system actually goes over 60
kilometers deep into the earth. The Kilauea Volcano sits on a curved line made up of other volcanoes such as Kohala and Mauna Kea.

Kilauea volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea means spreading or spewing for its frequent lava flows (USGS, 2014). It is
a shield volcano that locates on the southern of the Big Island in the Hawaii island chain at 19o25'16" N–155o17'13" W with the elevation of 4190 feet
above the sea level. The island chain forms by the movement of the Pacific plate over the stationary hot spot (Bagley, 2014). Kilauea is the youngest
volcano due to its location on the most southern where a hot spot is very active (Volcano discovery, 2014). There is alava lake in the central crater
known as Halemaumau with the surface from 60 m to 150 m deep inside the pit (Seach, 2014). A large 3 km by 5 km caldera at the summit is 165
meters deep. The total area of the volcano is 552 square meters. A magma plumbing system is over 60 km deep into the earth (Bioexpedition,
2013). According to the U.S. Geological Survey (2014), in the current cycle, Kilauea has 61 recored eruptions. In addition, Kilauea volcano is
continuously active since the eruption in 1983 (USGS, 2014). Kilauea erupts on the Eastern rift zone and localizes at the Pu 'u 'O 'o vent. Kilauea
volcano has gentle eruptions which are containing the basaltic magmas with 52 percent silica and about 0.5 percent water. It forms the flows of lava
with low viscosity and low gas content (USGS, 2003). Kilauea lava flows along the two elongated rift zones that extended to the sea. About 90 percent

It is a shield volcano that locates on the southern of the Big Island in the Hawaii island chain at 19o25'16" N–155o17'13" W with the elevation of 4190 feet above the sea level. The island chain forms by the movement of the Pacific plate over the stationary hot spot (Bagley, 2014). Kilauea is the youngest volcano due to its location on the most southern where a hot spot is very active (Volcano discovery, 2014). There is alava lake in the central crater known as Halemaumau with the surface from 60 m to 150 m deep inside the pit (Seach, 2014). A large 3 km by 5 km caldera at the summit is 165 meters deep.
