Michael Jackson was born April 29, 1958 to a working class family in Gary, Indiana. His parents,
Joe and Katherine had ten children and Michael Jackson was the eighth child. The Jackson family
was very musically inclined. Michael's father played guitar in a small R&B band, his mother sang
frequently, and his brothers often sand and played with their father's guitar (Biography on Michael

This was the most sold New Jack Swing record of all time. Dangerous not only was significant
because of the record it broke but all profits that were earned form the tour were donated to different

Not only did the sexual abuse allegations change the public's opinion of Jackson but his changing
appearance turned people off as well. Michael Jackson began changing his appearance with plastic

Child was born on August 15, 1912 in Pasadena, California as Julia McWilliams. She originally
enrolled at Smith College in Massachusetts to become a writer in 1930. She sent in a number of
short plays and manuscripts to the New Yorker but sadly none were ever published. After Child
graduated she decided to move to New York and got a job in advertising which later made her travel
to the stores Los Angeles branch which then she was fired from. When World War II occurred in
1941, Child moved to Washington D.C. and volunteered as a research assistant for the OSS. She
was sent around the world with her colleagues and in Sri Lanka she met her future husband, Paul
Child. Following their marriage in 1946 Paul Child resigned from the OSS and in 1948 they decided
to move to France. This is when Julia Child discovered her love for the French Cuisine. She went on
to attend the Cordon Bleu cooking school. Child trained for six months with private lessons from
Chef Max Bugmard. After her training Child and two of her fellow students went on to open up
L'Ecole de Trois Gourmandes. They wanted to make French cuisine more accessible to the

As Locke studied medicine with 17th century's leading English physician, Sydenham, he came
across a man by the name of Earl Shaftesbury, who ultimately influenced his change of career.

Building this memorial was surely the right way to go. There were many people of all ages,
ethnicity, and class. All the people gathered at the memorial created a sense of unity although we
were all there for different purposes. Many of these people were in high spirits and were enjoying
themselves.
While researching and reading about the history of the memorial, I found interesting things that
stood out. An example of this was the story behind the structural design. The architecture of the
chamber inside the memorial means something itself. Different stones from different states were
used in the creation of the chamber. According to the "DC Pages", "The terrace walls and lower
steps consisted of granite blocks from Massachusetts, the upper steps, outside front wall, and
columns contained marble blocks from Colorado–the interior walls and columns were Indiana
limestone, the floor was pink marble from Tennessee–the ceiling tiles were made up of Alabama
marble, and the Lincoln statue encompassed 28 pieces of marble from Georgia". The structure of the
memorial was built on different marble stones to signify what Abraham Lincoln stood for. Henry
Bacon who was behind the design of the memorial chose these stones to tell a story. The stones
symbolized that although a country was torn apart by war and hatred, it can still come together to

INTRODUCTION
There are many events, places, and people whose presence in the course of human history has had a
significant effect on that history, like the Fall of Rome and The Black Plague in the Middle–Ages
that saw the deaths of nearly half of the population of Europe. These significant events have a
profound effect on the present and future of the societies yet to come. American history is no
different. There are moments that changed the paradigm of our young civilization. The Rebellion of
the 13 colonies against Britain, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the development the
Constitution, and the wining of the Revolutionary War are just a few. Without these events the
reality of American society would be incredibly different, in fact, it might not exist at all. The Civil
War is another such occurrence in American history that shaped and decided the course that this
country would take. When we think of the Civil War the average person immediately thinks of the
ending of slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation, the bloody Battle of Gettysburg, and the
Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. While these events were all serious elements of the War, it is not

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that stimulated an explosive wave of literature,
visual art, music and intellectualism amongst the Black community in Harlem from the 1920s until
the mid–1930s. It was a chapter in a splendid and venerable progression and became a time for
cultural celebration and advancement for Black Americans. The roots of the Renaissance can be
linked to the Great Migration during WWI (Sayre, 2014), as a result of harsh and relentless racial
discrimination and disenfranchisement in the South, relocated millions of Blacks Americans to the

literature, including political writings, during the Harlem Renaissance. He became a voice for Black
Americans, his work illustrating the everyday lives of the working–class Black American. He
highlighted the highs and lows of the Negro in America, shining light on racial stereotypes and
prejudicial conditions that permeated the lives of the Black community. In his poem "The Weary
Blues", Hughes refers to the Black pianist on Lenox Avenue repeatedly as a Negro. He is a Negro
and a pianist. Hughes also rouses dualism by referring to the pianist's ebony hands and the piano's
ivory keys. The piece is melancholy in tone and expresses a theme of one's troubles and worries
being calmed or quieted through the power of music. Music, especially Jazz music was a common
outlet in everyday life for the Black community in those times. The singer in Hughes' poem was
able to channel the frustrations and pains of life into his music. In the end, the singer stops playing
and is able to sleep soundly writing, "The singer stopped playing and went to bed while the Weary
Blues echoed through his head. He slept like a rock or a man that's dead."

One of his teachers introduced him to Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman's poetry, who stood out as
Hughes primary influences. Hughes graduated from high school in 1920 and spent the following
year in Mexico with his father. Around this time, Hughes's poem

He isn't prepared because he only recently started to study into politics. He also has a problem with
