I Visited The San Fernando Mission
Narineh Arkilian Dr. Galvan 12/08/16 Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana I visited the San Fernando mission on Nov 29, 2016 .The visit to the
mission was one of the best experiences that I encountered. It was an exposure to a lot of details and helped me understand and reconnect with the past
historical events and moments that we were studying throughout the semester. The San Fernando mission was the 17th mission founded by father
juniper Serra. It was built to fill the gap between the mission San Buenaventura and the mission San Gabriel. We talked a lot about the Indians in the
class and you mentioned that they are the silent victims of the history. I went to the mission in search to find answers to some of my questions and to

According to what we learn in the class, children were separated from their parents and kept in a separate place. They had to wake up very early in
the morning and attended the classes and learn all about Christianity, instead of playing around and experiencing the outside world. My question
here was how can children be happy if they were separated from their mother? I was looking for the truth in the mission, but I found lies all over, in
the museum, in the church and in the garden. The history was depicted in the viewpoint of the Spanish priests and solders leaving out all the native
Indians. There is a cemetery on the back side of the church.it was the final resting place for thousands of neophytes and the early settlers. Visiting the
mission brings me both joy and sadness. I was happy to see such a beautiful architecture is preserved and it gives us some evidence about our past.
Visiting this mission took me back in the history, to the mission era that lead to death of thousands of native Indians. The sad part is that there is
nothing or very small information about the Indians in the mission. In this course we learned about Indians and how they were treated poorly by
Spaniards. Indians were the main income source for the mission. They worked under a very strict and harsh condition. And they were punished if they
tried to escape. The ultimate goal of Spaniards was to erase native's culture completely

Mission San Francisco Solano
The mission honors, Saint Francis Solano, a Spanish Franciscan Missionary in Peru and Paraguay, also known as Sonoma Mission. It's the twenty–first
and the last California mission founded by Fray Jose Altimira on July 4, 1823. It has a square shape of long structures made of bricks, wood, and
tile roofs and formed into a quadrangle. In one corner, was the church, adjacent were living quarters and parallel were the workshops, kitchen, and
storage. In addition, there were orchards, gardens, vineyards, fields of grain, a grist mill, houses for the soldiers and Indian families, a jail, a cemetery,
and an infirmary.

Father Altimira transferred to San Rafael and later returned to Spain. After the independence from Spain, in 1834, Mexico appointed General
Mariano Vallejo in charge of Mission Solano and authorized to turn over the mission to the native Americans but instead he claimed it as his own
property. The town of Sonoma was growing so was the need for building materials and the settlers used the tile roofs, timber, and adobe bricks from
the mission to use on their own. The original church collapsed in the early 1830s. So, in 1841, General Vallejo replaced the broken church and built a
chapel as the people of Sonoma built a bigger church across town. A local businessman bought the mission, in 1881, and used it as a barn, a winery,
and a blacksmith shop. The California Landmarks League bought the mission, in 1903, and later a strong earthquake destroyed the mission, in 1906.
Around 1909, the restoration started, in 1913, a few years later, they finished the reconstruction of the adobe church and convent and finally completed,
in 1926. Some of the famous names involved in the restoration project were: William Randolph Hearst, newspaper publisher, owner of the Hearst
Castle and philanthropist, and Architect Julia

Mission San Brutura Research Paper
Mission San Buenaventura is an historical mission. Mission San Buenaventura is the most popular mission out of all 21 missions. Mission San
Buenaventura was founded on on March 31,1782. The founder of this mission was Miguel Serra. Mission San Buenaventura was nicknamed
"Mission by the Sea," and the reason the Native Chumash nicknamed it that is because there were whaling ships near by. Mission Buenaventura was
built like a fort so the Native Chumash would not escape. There is a cemetery with 3,150 burials in it. There are 3 patios where 1,097 marriages
have taken place. There is also one workshop where people made tools and cloths. There is a Padre's Quarters, one orchard, and a one mile waterway.

Juniperro Serra Juniperro Serra was born in 1713 in to a farmer family, which were devout Catholics. He was born in Petra on the island of
Majorca, and baptized in his village church. HIs parents were Antonio Nadal Serra, and Margarita Rosa Ferrer. He spoke the Majorcan dialect of
Catalan, and acquired Castilian Spanish as his second language. He helped his parents work the fields, but especially liked to go to the Franciscan
friary at the church of San Bernardino. Attending the friars' primary school at the church, Miguel learned reading, writing, mathematics, Latin, religion
and liturgical song, especially Gregorian chant. At 15, his parents enrolled him in a Franciscan school in the capital city, Palma de Majorca, where he
studied philosophy. A year after, he became a novice in the Franciscan order. Right before his 17th birthday, he entered the Alcantarine branch of the
Friars Minor, a reform movement in the Order. After, he embarked on his novitiate period, a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Father Junipero Serra
The arrive of Father Junipero Serra in the Sacred Expedition in 1769 contributed to the expansion of the Spain's Catholic religion in California and the
disappearance of the Native culture. As a tradition, King Carlos III tried to expand the Enlightenment rationality in all the Spain's provinces; he wanted
the natives from his conquered lands to have an education and speak their language. To continue with this custom, Father Serra traveled to California to
build nine missions by the coast, and by 1823 his successors had raised the number to twenty–one. One of the purposes of the missions was to educate
natives about Spanish traditions through Spain's Catholic padres since they considered natives as irrational; this means that the California's

Fray Junipero Serra's Suppression Of The Military During...
One thing that is important to realize about Fray Junipero Serra is his disapproval of the military during the California Mission. When the New
World was discovered, people had different views on how they could exploit it. The military saw the New World as a place where they could put the
Spanish flag. Whereas the Church saw the New World as a place where they could place their cross. Serra, alongside with the military, set out on his
mission to convert Native Americans. Serra's difficult task of converting Native Americans was complicated by the military. Serra did not agree with
the military that was trying to establish a "reputation, a stage for distinction and personal honor" (Corrigan 19). Serra had a tough time working along

European Attitudes Towards Native Americans
European settlements in North America varied in their attitude towards Native Americans, even as time went on European view of Native Americans
changed. Each European state had different goals when first coming to North American i.e. different political and economical goals. While some of the
settlements had some similarities i.e. the French and Dutch having similar relationships with the Native Americans other like the Spanish differed
greatly. The Spanish came of America for several different reasons like search of precious metals i.e. gold Hernan Cortez and Francisco Pizarro, short
cut to India (Christopher Columbus), and to convert Native Americans (Serra Junipero). These goals led to their Negative attitude towards Native

Mission Presidio System Essay
B. Mission–Presidio System
The mission–presidio system was a settlement set up by the Spanish, the role of these missions was to transform Native Americans into christians and
civilize them. This system was brought to California in the 1700s by the Spanish. This settlement had been used by the Spaniards before to protect
Spain's interest and to colonize in other places which they had already done in Texas for example, Baja California, Mexico and as far as Guatemala.
The intent of the missions in California was to colonize the coast of California, because King Carlos III was concern about the English and
Russians expeditions, he did not want them to get this lands before they did so he authorized the expansion of the missions to Alta California. The
role in this missions was to convert as many natives into catholicism for them to become civilized. It was a way of expanding the spanish population
by baptizing the indians because by baptizing them they were becoming part of the spanish. The missionary schools were to educate and civilize the
natives. The spanish felt superior to them and in order for the indians to be considered "gente de razon" (people with reason) they had to be baptized
into this new religion. It was a way of expanding the Spanish power once the indians were baptized they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The missions were built from San Diego to up north of San Francisco bay. They were set that way because the missions had to have access to
water, as well as to good soil lands for crops and for livestock. Since ships would take months to get to the missions with goods and tools, and being
close the coast was easier for the ships to transport goods for the missions, and from the missions. Also been close to the coast was also easier for them
to have contact with many indians. Father Junipero Serra converted thousands of indians with the help of other

Missions
In the 18th century, what is now California was populated mostly by Native Americans. Late in the century, Franciscan missions sponsored by Spain
and the Roman Catholic church played an important role in establishing European settlement in the region. The Spaniards, who had already colonized
parts of Mexico to the south, wanted to protect those colonies and extend their influence northward. The Roman Catholic church wanted to convert
Native Americans to Christianity. The mission system supported both goals. The first Franciscan mission in California (Mission San Diego de
AlcalГЎ) was established by Father JunГpero Serra in what in now San Diego. Fifty–four years later in 1823, the Franciscans founded their last of 21
missions at San Francisco Solano. Each mission had an armed presidio to protect it. Each sought to teach the Native Americans both Christianity and
European farming methods. Many of the mission churches remain today as living examples of

Did Cabillo Use Spanish Conquerors To Colonize California
Spanish conquerors never considered colonizing California because the peninsula did not fulfill their ambitions, and there was not a place for
harboring. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo leaded an expedition searching for the Strait of AniГЎn in the northwest of America; in that occasion,
Cabrillo sailed around the tip of Baja stopping for several occasions and finally landed in San Miguel Bay, now San Diego; then he claimed the land
and its inhabitants as Spanish Crown propriety. Cabrillo's exploration unfortunately discovered that California was a place with a lack of gold and
precious metals, so that was a reason to avoid other explorations for a long time. Adding to that, conquerors were discourage to explore California for

Native Americans in California Missions
Native Americans in California Missions
Spanish wanted to colonize some of America, just like the Europeans. Building religious based Missions all throughout California was a way for them
to maintain ultimate social, political, and economic control. Spanish explorers arrived on the border of California during the 16th century. The very
first Franciscan mission was built in San Diego during 1769. By 1833, twenty two Spanish Missions existed from Southern California to Northern
California. Native Americans made up about one–third of those who lived and worked at the Missions. There were an estimated 310,000 Indians living
in California during the 16th century. The Spanish provided the Native Americans with the necessities such as food,... Show more content on

The Native Americans were not worked to death like the slaves in southern United States at this time. However, the strict regulation, cruel and
unusual punishments and forced new traditions are extremely inhumane acts. According to Julio Cesar, "When I was a boy the treatment given to
the Indians at the Mission was not good at all. We were at the mercy of the administrator, who ordered us to be flogged whenever and however he
took notion" (Mission). Every Mission had two priests. One priest's duties were to preach and teach about religion. The other priest's duties were
strictly on the work field. He instructed and gave the Native Americans and other workers their duties. The lifestyle in the California Missions was
set in a very rigorous schedule so it was nearly impossible for the Native Americans to take a break or escape the hardship.
The Natives resisted colonization after just a short time living and working at the Missions. There were a few deadly rebellions conducted by the
Native Americans. They destroyed Mission property and even threatened to kill priests. The most infamous attack occurred in San Diego. On
November 4, 1775, hundreds of men completely destroyed the Cuiamac Rancheria Mission of San Diego. The men also killed three Hispanics,
including the Father, Padre Jaime (Sandos, 92). In addition, in 1824, another great Indian rebellion in California occurred at the Missions of Barbara.

Our Founder: Junipero Serra In the book "Junipero Serra California's Founding Father" Steven Hackel illuminates the importance Junipero Serra has
on California's history while at the same time pointing out his flaws. Hackel focuses on Serra's life and experiences which were beneficial while
making missionaries in California. Withal, these expeditions and actions were crucial in the history of California and the lifestyle that we live today.
Early in the book, Steven Hackel shares background knowledge on Miquel Joseph Serra's life (better known as Junipero Serra). Hackel explains how
Serra was born in Mallorca in a small village named Petra. Mallorca was an island with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
63). Serra knew that in order to convert the Indians he would have to do more than show them what the religion was about, instead he would have
to make connections. Hackel illustrates how Serra wanted to build missionaries because of the way he saw the Indians. He believed that he would
be able to civilize them, therefore, thought that "they would be on the road to salvation." (pg. 168). This quote supports Hackel's main argument
because his voyage to California to "save" the Indians resulted in his missionaries being built. It conveys him as being one of the founders of
California. Moreover, Hackel's thesis is convincing due to the fact that the civilization of California was important as it was the introduction to
European lifestyles in those areas which helped those who now live in California (and shows where our lifestyle was acquired). However, while
Hackel displays the heroic acts that some may associate with Serra, it also shows how he would also be considered a bad colonist. The way that he
wants to uproot the Indian's lifestyle and rule them is associated with colonization. Furthermore, Hackel successfully reveals how this was a hard
process for Serra as many Indians did not like the idea and all the changes. Ultimately, his efforts to civilize California outweighs his

Monterey Bay Experience Essay
In order to gain more knowledge and a better understanding of postcolonial discourses within the context of the Monterey Bay area I conducted my
field research at the Carmel mission. I decided to do my field research relating to the carmel mission because I am interested in the psychological
effects Native Americans experienced during the creation of the missions and how the missionaries affected them. In addition, other reasons why I
chose this postcolonial issue is because I wanted to gain more knowledge on the missions, since I was given a very vague historical description in
primary school. Lastly, I was curious in this topic because I wanted to engage in multiple perspectives and to hear what individuals really knew about
the mission. Moreover, the Carmel mission was founded in June of 1770 by Saint Junipero Serra. The mission was primarily built to convert natives,
establish territory, and create stopping points along California. Native american tribes such as the Esselen and other Costanoan tribes were the main
groups who lived in that area who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Life became difficult because crops were difficult to grow and the missionaries heavily relied on supply ships. The natives were also having a difficult
time adjusting to the strict lifestyle of the missionaries. Native Americans did not only have to adjust to this new lifestyle but they also encountered
abuse. Physical abuse such as being whipped, burned, raped, and beated were all known practices. In addition native culture, language, and spiritual
practices were often forbidden under the mission system. In an attempt to free themselves from this form of oppression and unhealthy lifestyle some
indians ran away. Unfortunately, running away from the mission was not enough. The missionaries would bring back indians to the mission regardless
of choice and they would be punished for trying to

Introduction
Have you learned about missions? One about the missions was that Junipero Serra founded only 9 of the 21 missions founded in California. One of
the missions founded by Junipero Serra was Mission Santa Clara De Asis(Wikipedia "Junipero Serra) which is the mission I'm going to inform you
about. One of the resources that I used for this paper was "The Missions: California's Heritage,Mission Santa Clara De Asis" by Mary Null BouleМЃ,
published by Merryant Publishers, 1988. Next, I will inform you about the history of this mission and also it's designs.

For example, one of the most recent disaster was a fire in 1926 (from"Fact Cards California ,Missions ,Mission Santa Clara De Asis"). How this
affected the mission was that it made the mission more stable over the years. For example, when the first version of the mission was made of logs
and then moved on to more stable materials like adobe bricks. Next, you will learn about the routine of the native americans and about which tribes
were brought to this mission. Have you ever wondered about the routine of the Native Americans that went to the mission? Well first of all,to clarify
which Native Americans were brought there, it was the Ohlone and the Chochenyo that were brought to the mission to be baptized(from The article
The History of Mission Santa Clara(Santa Clara University website)). Ok so each morning, the native americans were awakened by a church bell and
were sent to church which was before breakfast and after breakfast is work. Woman cooked, older boys worked in fields, and children went to school
where padres taught them. At noon, they eat lunch(page 8 of "The Missions: California's Heritage Mission Santa Clara De AsiМЃs" by Mary Null

Serra's Canonization
As Serra's canonization may have come as a moment of deep pride for Latinos and Catholic alike, it was obviously also a source of great controversy
for many Native Americans. They have since grown weary of the deception and the corruption on the part of many different outfits of the Catholic
Church. In one particularly angering case from 1986, the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, California, where Father Serra is buried, released a report that
found no evidence of Native American mistreatment. Despite the utter lack of respect and false research from that report, there are also proponents of
the Church who have acknowledged Serra's crimes against Native Americans, both then and now. However, this doesn't come without a catch that still
keeps... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The acceptance and even glorification of his 'good deeds' also played an immense role. Many have touted Serra as a champion for Native
American rights despite the clear historical evidence supporting the idea that he was a forceful evangelizer who saw himself and the Spanish as
superior beings to the Native Americans. Although many say Serra was better than most missionaries of his time, it still doesn't account for all the
heinous crimes he committed. Robert M. Senkewicz, a history professor at Santa Clara University rightfully said that while Serra represented "the
softer side of Spanish colonialism," he still actively participated in a system in which "violence and coercion were an integral part." One could argue
that the only real reason why this historical narrative hasn't been rightfully rewritten is that its roots are in a religious institution. Not just any
institution, the Catholic church yields power and influence on a global scale. Yet again, we see the presence of both an oppressor as well as the
oppressed. The Catholic Church has been viewed as the 'defender of all that is right and just' throughout history because it claims that many of its
unholy actions were carried out in the name of God. As we study history to make sense of the present, we can often become naГЇve, accepting 'facts' at
face value. With that said, we form 'silences' just like in the historical narrative

The Effect of Spanish Colonization on California Indians
This paper will discuss the impact Spanish colonization and Mexican control had on the indigenous Indian population in California between 1769 and
1848. As well as discussing the historical origins, social organizations, material conditions, and world–view of the California Indians prior to 1769, this
paper will explain the impact of New Spain's Mission System on the Alta California Indian population between 1769 to 1821 and the response of its
system by the Indians.
Before the Americans and the Spanish there were many indigenous Indian tribes living and thriving with structure and culture in California. The

Anthropologist Lowell J. Bean has described the California Indians as "non–political, ethnic nationalities." Tribes consisted of "triblets", with each
triblet including a group of neighboring villages ranging from hundreds to several thousands individuals. Social classes almost were non–existent,
except in the northwest where personal wealth was a common practice.
The history of the California Indians differ from any other ethnic group who came to the Americas in the last few centuries as immigrants. Indians who
came to North America and eventually traveled south to California lived in a land plenty of natural resources and their material technology reflected
what was necessary to meet their basic needs. They did what was necessary to survive, nothing more, nothing less. They lived in harmony with their
environment with a cultural lifestyle that was more a reflection of numbers and using the most out of everything. After 1769, things began to change.
Starting in 1500, a new world capitalist system was emerging in Europe. It was a start of a new age, an age of discovery. Spain was looking for the

age discovery was a new capitalist system called Mercantilism, which is a system based upon a state to advance national business interests abroad and

Richard Serr Art And Visual Experience
Richard Serra Richard Serra was born in 1938 in San Francisco, California. He studied at the University of California and at Yale University as well.
He is one of the well–known American artists and sculptors of the Post–Abstract Expressionist period. His work has played a major role in advancing
the tradition of modern abstract sculpture. His work has been able to draw a new perspective to sculpture by viewers in physical and visual experience.
Richard Serra was involved in the process Art movement and currently works in Tribeca, New York and on Cape Breton Island in Novia Scotia. I
believe the background of the artist has a great contribution to the works he has created. Living and working the New York could have been the
main factor to why Richard Serra has made these tall structures that kind of represent walls or towers. It may depict how the city of New York is
seen to be portrayed as. Many different kind of buildings and sort of an industrial looking area with many structures and buildings surrounding the
millions of people that walk through it every single day. This may have been why he had decided to create his sculptures for people to walk through
and around them to see what he is trying to portray. Richard Serra made his first sculpture out of materials such as fiberglass, rubber, and molten lead.
Around 1970s, Serra had shifted his normal activities and stated to work on large scale site specific sculptures. He creates these sculptures that are a lot

Almost all the tribes were peaceful and violence was not a form of punishment for wrongdoing. The acts of these Spanish soldiers caused a majority
of the violence on both sides. And as racial violence began to increase, resistance to missionization increased heavily and countless revolts against the
Spanish missions occurred all over California. One of the first revolts took place in 1769 in San Diego on La MisiГіn San Diego de AlcalГЎ in the
homeland of the Kumeyaay Indians. In 1775, the Kumeyaay revolted, burned the mission and killed one of the priests. The Kumeyaay Indians revolted
due to forced labor and raping of women. These revolts would become quite common throughout the Spanish missionization period in California. In
total there were fifteen rebellions against the Spanish. Relations between the priest of the missions and Indian shamans and Chiefs began to deteriorate
as well. On one hand, the Spanish priests began to blame Satan for the rebellions. On the other hand, many of the Indians viewed the Spanish priests as
shamans and held them responsible for the disease and misfortune which was befalling them. Thus, the killing of the priest–an evil shaman in the eyes
of the Indians–and the removal of sacred objects from the mission was a way of cleansing the land of the spiritual evil that was growing on

Lancaster, Massachusetts. After his father's death, Burbank moved with his family to a small farm in Groton. At the age of twenty–one he purchased
seventeen acres of land near Lunenburg and began a 55–year plant–breeding career. Inspired by Charles Darwin's Variation of Animals and Plants
Under Domestication, Burbank determined that better plants could be developed through natural selection and new varieties created through
crossbreeding, or hybridization.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A naturalist is a person who studies or is an expert in natural history, especially a zoologist or botanist. John Muir was born April 21, 1838, in
Dunbar, Scotland. When he was a young child he enjoyed learning and creating inventions and after showing his inventions at the state Fair, Muir
attended the University of Wisconsin during the early 1860s. John left school in 1863 and he took up studying botany and exploring the natural
world by foot while taking on jobs to support himself. he was blinded for a time when he was in involved in an accident while he was working at a
factory in 1870. Upon regaining his sight, he fully embraced his devotion to nature and walked from Indiana to Florida, creating detailed sketches
of the terrain. Muir became known for his articles that praised the natural world, speaking in poetic, spiritual terms about his affection for the
ecology and humanity's earth connection, garnering a large and varied readership. He also published a grouping of essays pushing for the
establishment of Yosemite National Park, which was created in 1890. Muir became a major figure in the creation of parks for the Grand Canyon
and Sequoia regions as well. He was the author of several books as well, including The Mountains of California (1894), Our National Parks (1901),
Stickeen: The Story of a Dog (1909) and My First Summer in the Sierra (1911). John Muir taught us to be creative and about nature and how important

Spanish Colonization Occurred During 1781-1821
Spanish colonization occured during 1781–1821. Spain wanted California to be considered their land and they had every intention of doing that. The
Spanish started to build things such as missons which are permanent settlements and also presidios(forts). By building these structures the Spanish
started to call California theirs. The first two missions built were in San Diego and Monterrey. It all started with Father Junipero Serra he was on a
"sainted mission" and his goal was to convert the California native Americans into christians. By the time the Spanish were done there was 21 missions
throughout California, they were made a days walk from each other. Of the 21 missions Father Junipero Serra found the first nine. Spanish exploration
and settlement had a negative impact on California and California Indians because they lost their culture, were treated cruely, and the natives lost their
land. First, when the Spanish colonized they already had the greedy visions of making California theirs regardless that the native Americans lived on
the land. The Spanish not only took over but caused them to lose their culture and changed their way of living. All along the Spanish had the purpose to
gain land and convert the Indians into Christians. Before the arrival of the Spanish Indians had a decent lifestyle. Most were hunter and gatherers and
had trade with other communities, their own language, a belief system, and customs and traditions that made them unique from other tribes.

Event Analysis: Saving Souls, Securing Land
The event I attended was the Saving Souls, Securing Land; California Missions exhibit at the California Museum. We all know as Californians the
historical significance the missions have had in California's history. I will analyze the event through my own personal experience and through aspects
pertaining to religious studies. The California Missions exhibit displays the motivations behind the missions, the impact on the native people through
religious leaders' expectations and cross–cultural clash. Although the California Missions exhibit is a historical display, it can be analyzed through
some aspects of religious studies. The motivations behind the missions can uncover the purpose the Franciscan padres had for these institutions. Leader
expectations made up most of how the natives were treated and how they served the religion. Through the difference in beliefs between the padres ...

The motivations found for the missions were founded upon colonizing the newfound territory. Instead of sending settlers, the Spanish catholic missions
were used to convert the Native people to the Catholic faith. There were many expectations the Franciscan padres had on the natives. Through the
conversion, the Spaniards were to "civilize" the natives in order to make them work in building and maintaining the missions. In order for the natives'
souls to be saved the Franciscan padres believed that the native people needed to be baptized and educated. Upon doing so, there was a cross–cultural
clash in which the padres disrupted native traditions, which included religious beliefs. The catholic leaders saw the religions the natives practiced as
pagan, and tainted with evil, and were therefor to be rid of (California

The Spanish Dream Of Christopher Columbus And The American...
Thesis The initial Spanish settlers were both successful and not successful as well in achieving their American Dream in due to the fact that they had
the missions and their control over California as well as lost all of their hold on California and the missions because of the Mexicans that rebelled
against the Spanish Crown.12
Origins
The Spanish were a group of people from the great country of Spain in Europe. The rulers at the time, Ferdinand the Second of Aragon and Isabella of
Castille was able to finance one man. The man was the legendary explorer of the seas, Christopher Columbus.3 He was the one who started the Spanish
interest of the Americas. He showed the Crown what the Americas have.
Christopher Columbus was the one to land in the Americas first for the Spanish Empire, but not the first Spaniard to land and set up Spain's grip on the
Northern Americas, especially in California. That belonged to Hernan CortГ©s. CortГ©s's voyage was first funded by a third party, Diego
VelГЎzquez. The voyage before the its original sail out date was canceled by Diego VelГЎzquez and CortГ©s's voyage was lost. CortГ©s got word of
this and sailed out the night before the original sail date before anything could happen to it and him in 1519.45 He wanted his chance to explore the
world and to look for the legendary Strait of AniГЎn. The Strait of AniГЎn was this pathway from the Americas to the Far East in Asia that no
explorer has found.6 CortГ©s landed in the middle of the Americas and found out about the Aztec Empire that was ruled by Montezuma after he set up
a fishing village called Pontonchan. CortГ©s first went to TenochitlГЎn, the "City of Dreams", and was shocked to see the advancement that the
Aztecs had.78 He also found out about what the Aztecs do in their free time. The Aztecs were violent to their neighbors, they were cannibals, and the
Aztecs performed human sacrifices.9 This was a good motive for CortГ©s to conquer the Aztec empire. CortГ©s wanted to push more North as well,
but could not get far.
CortГ©s got up to Baja California in the 1530's. Another explorer, after CortГ©s, went to push into Alta California. He was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.

Tom Brady: Early American Football
To become a quarterback in the National Football League, a man must have strength, accuracy, focus, and determination. Not having any of those
skills, a man will not be selected to the National Football League. One man who possesses those skills is Tom Brady. Since he has learned to play the
sport, he has develop his skills to be able to successfully compete with others in the National Football League.
Beginning of Something Great
Born August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California; Tom was the youngest of four. He has three siblings who are Julie Brady, Maureen Brady, and Nancy

Tom did extremely good on the Serra baseball team, but still wanted to play football. According to Doeden, "he was also determined to be on the
football team, perhaps dreaming of doing his best impression of his idol, Joe Montana, on the field." (10) Serra did not have an excellent football
program, yet Tom still wanted to play football. He first started to play as a linebacker, but during off season decide to try out for quarterback. His
sophomore year, he was backup quarterback on the varsity team. The following year Tom would be named the starting quarterback for the varsity team
of Serra High School. He had great individual numbers that year, but it did not show in the team record. Not having a good record could bring
down his chances on getting looked at from colleges. According to Doeden, "Scouts were interested in Tom as he entered his senior season in
1994." (11) The two years he was starting quarterback , he had completed 214 passes for 3,514 yards. Besides football Tom was doing extremely
good on the baseball team. Following his senior year, he got drafted into the eighteenth round of the major league amateur draft to the Montreal

California Missions – Monuments or Tombstones?
Most Californians are introduced to the California Mission system in one of two ways: in their early education, or when they first visit a mission.
Unfortunately, both methods are prone to simplification or bias in conveying the history of the missions. What this has led to is Californians who are
ignorant of the history of the land they walk on. Consequently, visitors to the missions treat them as mere tourist attractions, instead of trying to
embrace and understand the complex issues the missions represent.
The issue was brought sharply into focus for me recently, when I was in the cemetery of Mission Santa Barbara. It was a sunny afternoon and the tiny
graveyard was crowded with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then you construct a model of a mission out of sugar cubes. For most people, this is all they will learn about the missions unless they visit one.
While each mission is unique, most of what you learn in one is the same. My first visit to a mission was as a child with my grandmother. We
visited San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo and San Juan Bautista. Both were presented as old churches that the Indians and Mexicans came to
practice at and lived in. I looked through the glass cases and saw the tools and pictures and copies of the Bible. The placards described what the tools
were used for and where the Bibles came from. The drawings showed Father Serra or the lands as they looked then.
The recent tour I did of the missions showed that things had not changed much. In fact, by the 8th mission, I was bored by seeing the same tools in the
same glass cases, bored and frustrated, because that was the knowledge most people were content to leave with.
Now I will tell you why we shouldn't settle for artifacts with explanations of their use as the whole story. California had a population of at least
300,000 Native Americans who spoke at least 100 languages. These people lived on this land for centuries before the Spaniards showed up. Of
course, you would never know that if you only learn from a mission or an elementary school. We are only told about the California Indians' use of
tools or baking of adobe

Junipero Frances Mission Statement
Junipero Serra was essentially the founder of the mission system and he set much of the precedent as to how the missions would run and treat the
indigenous people. Serra's work on the missions had large effects on the native people besides just spreading Christianity to the New World. More
recently, Serra's canonization has been a rather controversial topic due to the history surrounding his treatment of the natives and the overall results of
the missions. The Catholic Church is aware of this history and still chose to make Junipero Serra a saint even with the protests by different Native
American groups. However, the Catholic Church feels they have good reason as to why Serra is considered a saint regardless of these arguments. This

As mentioned by PBS, "He was notorious for his mortifications of the flesh: wearing heavy shirts with sharp wires pointed inward, whipping
himself to the point of bleeding, and using a candle to scar the flesh of his chest"(PBS.org). This shows how he used violence in his form of
practice and when it came to the natives, he had no problem treating them as he did himself. Mortifications of the flesh was one principle he lived
by and it became a part of the way the missions worked. Junipero Serra became involved with the missions when the Jesuits were expelled from
New Spain and Serra was chosen to take over the missions. He had a complete new vision for the missions that included forcing the natives to live
on the mission and attend mass twice everyday. Women were to be separated from men so that there would be no possibility of sin in the missions.
Serra's ultimate goal for the missions was to convert as many natives as possible because he believed in the power and greatness of his religion(Castillo
55–70). In his lifetime, Serra founded nine missions and converted around 5,000 natives in present day California(PBS.org). Spain was more than
pleased with Serra's work with the missions because they felt it gave Spain control over Alta California. They encouraged the missions and began
sending more friars to aid in the process that Serra had created(Castillo 70–75). In addition to Junipero Serra's history and his path heading towards the

The Causes And Impacts Of The California Gold Rush
Making approximately $405.9 billion in IRS tax, $51.3 billion in income tax, and $345.8 billion in individual income and employment tax in 2015 ,
California has had the highest federal revenue of any state in the United States of America. Though, California's accumulation of wealth did not always
solely rely on taxes from Hollywood or the tourism to the mountains, beaches, national parks or landmarks; California was once known for its surplus of
gold, creating the infamous event known as the California Gold Rush. The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) grabbed the attention of people
worldwide due to the massive discovery of gold; this influx of people caused the population of California to increase by thousands of people, which
allowed California to skip the formal territorial stage and become a full–fledged state.
SPAIN EXPLORES CALIFORNIA Before California could become a state, California would have to be explored. The Spanish navigator Juan
Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first person to find present–day California in 1542. When Cabrillo first found California there were about 130,000 Native
Americans on the land. In Encyclopedia Britannica's article titled "California," it is mentioned that "The territory was neglected by Spain for more
than two centuries (until 1769) because of reports of the region's poverty and a general slowdown of Spanish exploration." Even if the overall territory
was neglected, the Spanish people did want to settle the land. Settlement was supported

Junipero Serra: Missionary or Murderer? "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." These are the words we were taught
as early young Americans. However, there is a man who's actions have denied the Native Americans' liberty and justice, and his name is Junipero
Serra. Junipero Serra was a Spanish missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Word of God to the natives of America so that He can forge his
path: the path to Heaven. Although many of them were eager to become transformed by God, Serra's methods of conversion became their destruction
rather than their solution. Pope Francis recognizes him for his "selfless acts" rather than his acts of genocide. Ironically, Serra believed that teaching

He did convert the Native Americans successfully. He did stand up for them when Spanish authority got involved. Serra just did not do the right
things. He probably realized that there was already an issue with communications. He and the friars were oblivious to how the Native Americans
felt because they could not comprehend what the friars said and they could not explain their feelings. Also, force is not something that should be
used when trying to convert someone into Catholicism; force should not even be an option. Violence and capital punishment in order to discipline
others will only lead to increasing fear and decreasing support for the mission. Lastly, his actions went against what he was taught and what he was
trying to teach. He may not have liked this world, but he proves to be a bad example of a Saint. Self harm, subjugation, and ignorance are not what
makes a person a good example OR a Saint. In fact, Serra should not have been deemed by a Saint because the law of the Roman Catholic Church
states that he must perform a few miracles. However, Pope Francis found a loophole and was able to canonize

Community Immersion Analysis On Community
Introduction
The definition of Community, Netting, Kettner, McMurty and Thomas (2012) stated by Warren (1978) "Community is the combination of social units
and systems that perform the major social functions relevant to meeting people's needs on a local level."(p.133). Understanding communities is
important to social workers as they have, Netting et al (2012) "to know individuals functions within larger systems, understanding of its history and that
communities constantly change" (p. 168). A community has many parts that make it work together; when one part is not working well, it affects the
entire system. Social Workers are able to analyze, interpret data and work with community groups and leaders to find solutions to improve the workings
of that community to its full potential.
This community immersion analysis will focus on its community's social agencies, diversity and cultural richness. Systems Theory applies to this area
as the macro system of this community's main downtown street is filled with stores, restaurants, cultural establishments where locals as well as tourist
convene (Netting, 2012) "that carries out production as well as school and religious sites work to socialize community members." (P.140)

Purpose And Symbolism Of The Leather Belt
The object that I chose to discuss is the Leather Belt. This object came from one of the most well–known Native American tribes in the United States,
the Navajo. The Navajo tribe was, and currently is, located within the four states of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado– also known as the
Four Corners of the southwestern United States. Many people in the region still speak the Navajo language, as well as English. The Leather Belt was
originally made of leather and strapped with eight silver "conchas," the Spanish word for shells. Some believe that the Native Americans stole this idea
from the Mexicans. Within each shell, there is a silver coin design that has been stamped onto the concha. In order to attach the shells to the belt, each

When the Mission was initially constructed, many people would depend on the Mission for food and supplies. They would starve since they were
always reliant on additional Missions and New Spain to send them food. Not only were the living conditions hard at the Mission, but the rules were
demanding as well. The way of life at Mission Santa Barbara comprised of waking up at sunrise each morning for great prayer then going to work
on the Mission. Work was not equal for everyone. Men, women and children were busy with their own jobs and those kept everyone busy throughout
the day. Men would mostly go through hard labor in the fields and take care of the crops that were being gathered, or monitor the cattle. On the other
hand, women and children classically remained inside the Mission and finished routine chores. Everyone who lived in the Mission understood that
they were likely to follow the Father's schedule and lifestyle. Not everybody could withstand such a strict lifestyle based on prayer and work;
therefore, many individuals, particularly the Native Americans who were not accustomed to this lifestyle, would try to escape from Mission

The Impact Of Saint Junipero Serra
Saint Junipero Serra was born on the Island of Majorca on the 24th of November, 1713.1 To many, he is often regarded as the founder and spiritual
guardian of old Alta California, as witnessed in his rather common title, "The Father of California." 2 In response to this, an intelligent student of
history might ask himself, "What effect did the man really have, if any at all?" To find the answer, one must delve back into the history of old Spanish
California, taking a good look at the padre's past. To that end, this report aims to present the logical conclusion from the facts and the evidence. Saint
Junipero's ultimate impact will be discerned with the following, especially his helping to found modern California, his teaching and helping of the
Indians, and his helping to bring the Catholic Faith.
To actually discern whether or not Saint Junipero Serra had a great effect on modern California, one must first analyze the effect he had on old Spanish
California. With this thought in mind, the first possible thing to look at is the missions. These crusty, old adobe buildings, or groups of buildings, were

The first was how he helped in the founding of Modern California, specifically by the fact that Saint Junipero Serra established nine different missions,

showed how he helped and taught the Indians, mostly through raising their standard of living and teaching them new and advanced skills. Finally, this
report revealed how he brought the Catholic faith into the region, and taught it to the Indians through both teaching and example. In the end, Saint
Junipero has been adequately shown as having a great impact on California through these three

How Did The Spanish Americans Build Religion In The 1700s
In the 1700s, the Spanish wanted to expand their culture and religion because they wanted their wealth and power to grow. They also wanted to settle
where no other Europeans would settle. To keep out the Europeans, they stationed strong military services by these missionaries. From Spain, the
Fathers were sent to Northern America, settling in California, to spread Christian practices.
Our very first missions was established by Father Junipero Serra. He helped establish missions such as the San Diego de Alcala and the San Antonio

California. By 1823, the 21st mission in Sonoma was built, successfully

I Visited The San Fernando Mission

  • 1. I Visited The San Fernando Mission Narineh Arkilian Dr. Galvan 12/08/16 Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana I visited the San Fernando mission on Nov 29, 2016 .The visit to the mission was one of the best experiences that I encountered. It was an exposure to a lot of details and helped me understand and reconnect with the past historical events and moments that we were studying throughout the semester. The San Fernando mission was the 17th mission founded by father juniper Serra. It was built to fill the gap between the mission San Buenaventura and the mission San Gabriel. We talked a lot about the Indians in the class and you mentioned that they are the silent victims of the history. I went to the mission in search to find answers to some of my questions and to confirm... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to what we learn in the class, children were separated from their parents and kept in a separate place. They had to wake up very early in the morning and attended the classes and learn all about Christianity, instead of playing around and experiencing the outside world. My question here was how can children be happy if they were separated from their mother? I was looking for the truth in the mission, but I found lies all over, in the museum, in the church and in the garden. The history was depicted in the viewpoint of the Spanish priests and solders leaving out all the native Indians. There is a cemetery on the back side of the church.it was the final resting place for thousands of neophytes and the early settlers. Visiting the mission brings me both joy and sadness. I was happy to see such a beautiful architecture is preserved and it gives us some evidence about our past. Visiting this mission took me back in the history, to the mission era that lead to death of thousands of native Indians. The sad part is that there is nothing or very small information about the Indians in the mission. In this course we learned about Indians and how they were treated poorly by Spaniards. Indians were the main income source for the mission. They worked under a very strict and harsh condition. And they were punished if they tried to escape. The ultimate goal of Spaniards was to erase native's culture completely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Mission San Francisco Solano The mission honors, Saint Francis Solano, a Spanish Franciscan Missionary in Peru and Paraguay, also known as Sonoma Mission. It's the twenty–first and the last California mission founded by Fray Jose Altimira on July 4, 1823. It has a square shape of long structures made of bricks, wood, and tile roofs and formed into a quadrangle. In one corner, was the church, adjacent were living quarters and parallel were the workshops, kitchen, and storage. In addition, there were orchards, gardens, vineyards, fields of grain, a grist mill, houses for the soldiers and Indian families, a jail, a cemetery, and an infirmary. Mission San Francisco Solano is in 114 E. Spain Street, Sonoma, California. In 1832 at the peak of the mission's history, Fray ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Father Altimira transferred to San Rafael and later returned to Spain. After the independence from Spain, in 1834, Mexico appointed General Mariano Vallejo in charge of Mission Solano and authorized to turn over the mission to the native Americans but instead he claimed it as his own property. The town of Sonoma was growing so was the need for building materials and the settlers used the tile roofs, timber, and adobe bricks from the mission to use on their own. The original church collapsed in the early 1830s. So, in 1841, General Vallejo replaced the broken church and built a chapel as the people of Sonoma built a bigger church across town. A local businessman bought the mission, in 1881, and used it as a barn, a winery, and a blacksmith shop. The California Landmarks League bought the mission, in 1903, and later a strong earthquake destroyed the mission, in 1906. Around 1909, the restoration started, in 1913, a few years later, they finished the reconstruction of the adobe church and convent and finally completed, in 1926. Some of the famous names involved in the restoration project were: William Randolph Hearst, newspaper publisher, owner of the Hearst Castle and philanthropist, and Architect Julia ... • 3. Mission San Brutura Research Paper Mission San Buenaventura is an historical mission. Mission San Buenaventura is the most popular mission out of all 21 missions. Mission San Buenaventura was founded on on March 31,1782. The founder of this mission was Miguel Serra. Mission San Buenaventura was nicknamed "Mission by the Sea," and the reason the Native Chumash nicknamed it that is because there were whaling ships near by. Mission Buenaventura was built like a fort so the Native Chumash would not escape. There is a cemetery with 3,150 burials in it. There are 3 patios where 1,097 marriages have taken place. There is also one workshop where people made tools and cloths. There is a Padre's Quarters, one orchard, and a one mile waterway. In The Mission San Buenaventura, their were ... He was born in Petra on the island of Majorca, and baptized in his village church. HIs parents were Antonio Nadal Serra, and Margarita Rosa Ferrer. He spoke the Majorcan dialect of Catalan, and acquired Castilian Spanish as his second language. He helped his parents work the fields, but especially liked to go to the Franciscan friary at the church of San Bernardino. Attending the friars' primary school at the church, Miguel learned reading, writing, mathematics, Latin, religion and liturgical song, especially Gregorian chant. At 15, his parents enrolled him in a Franciscan school in the capital city, Palma de Majorca, where he studied philosophy. A year after, he became a novice in the Franciscan order. Among his students, were future missionaries Francisco Palou and Juan Crespi. After the course ended in 1743 he said to his students," I desire nothing more from you than this, that when the news of my death shall have reached your ears, I ask you to say for the benefit of my soul: 'May he rest in peace.' • 5. Father Junipero Serra The arrive of Father Junipero Serra in the Sacred Expedition in 1769 contributed to the expansion of the Spain's Catholic religion in California and the disappearance of the Native culture. As a tradition, King Carlos III tried to expand the Enlightenment rationality in all the Spain's provinces; he wanted the natives from his conquered lands to have an education and speak their language. To continue with this custom, Father Serra traveled to California to build nine missions by the coast, and by 1823 his successors had raised the number to twenty–one. One of the purposes of the missions was to educate natives about Spanish traditions through Spain's Catholic padres since they considered natives as irrational; this means that the California's ... • 6. Fray Junipero Serra's Suppression Of The Military During... One thing that is important to realize about Fray Junipero Serra is his disapproval of the military during the California Mission. When the New World was discovered, people had different views on how they could exploit it. The military saw the New World as a place where they could put the Spanish flag. Whereas the Church saw the New World as a place where they could place their cross. Serra, alongside with the military, set out on his mission to convert Native Americans. Serra's difficult task of converting Native Americans was complicated by the military. Serra did not agree with the military that was trying to establish a "reputation, a stage for distinction and personal honor" (Corrigan 19). Serra had a tough time working along with ... Each European state had different goals when first coming to North American i.e. different political and economical goals. • 8. Mission Presidio System Essay B. Mission–Presidio System The mission–presidio system was a settlement set up by the Spanish, the role of these missions was to transform Native Americans into christians and civilize them. This system was brought to California in the 1700s by the Spanish. This settlement had been used by the Spaniards before to protect Spain's interest and to colonize in other places which they had already done in Texas for example, Baja California, Mexico and as far as Guatemala. The intent of the missions in California was to colonize the coast of California, because King Carlos III was concern about the English and Russians expeditions, he did not want them to get this lands before they did so he authorized the expansion of the missions to Alta California. The role in this missions was to convert as many natives into catholicism for them to become civilized. It was a way of expanding the spanish population by baptizing the indians because by baptizing them they were becoming part of the spanish. The missionary schools were to educate and civilize the natives. The spanish felt superior to them and in order for the indians to be considered "gente de razon" (people with reason) they had to be baptized into this new religion. Influence of Mission on people.................................... Missions In the 18th century, what is now California was populated mostly by Native Americans. Late in the century, Franciscan missions sponsored by Spain and the Roman Catholic church played an important role in establishing European settlement in the region. The Spaniards, who had already colonized parts of Mexico to the south, wanted to protect those colonies and extend their influence northward. The Roman Catholic church wanted to convert Native Americans to Christianity. The mission system supported both goals. The first Franciscan mission in California (Mission San Diego de AlcalГЎ) was established by Father JunГpero Serra in what in now San Diego. Fifty–four years later in 1823, the Franciscans founded their last of 21 missions at San Francisco Solano. Each mission had an armed presidio to protect it. • 10. Did Cabillo Use Spanish Conquerors To Colonize California Spanish conquerors never considered colonizing California because the peninsula did not fulfill their ambitions, and there was not a place for harboring. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo leaded an expedition searching for the Strait of AniГЎn in the northwest of America; in that occasion, Cabrillo sailed around the tip of Baja stopping for several occasions and finally landed in San Miguel Bay, now San Diego; then he claimed the land and its inhabitants as Spanish Crown propriety. • 11. Native Americans in California Missions Native Americans in California Missions Spanish wanted to colonize some of America, just like the Europeans. Building religious based Missions all throughout California was a way for them to maintain ultimate social, political, and economic control. Spanish explorers arrived on the border of California during the 16th century. The very first Franciscan mission was built in San Diego during 1769. By 1833, twenty two Spanish Missions existed from Southern California to Northern California. Native Americans made up about one–third of those who lived and worked at the Missions. There were an estimated 310,000 Indians living in California during the 16th century. The Spanish provided the Native Americans with the necessities such as food,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Native Americans were not worked to death like the slaves in southern United States at this time. However, the strict regulation, cruel and unusual punishments and forced new traditions are extremely inhumane acts. According to Julio Cesar, "When I was a boy the treatment given to the Indians at the Mission was not good at all. We were at the mercy of the administrator, who ordered us to be flogged whenever and however he took notion" (Mission). Every Mission had two priests. One priest's duties were to preach and teach about religion. The other priest's duties were strictly on the work field. He instructed and gave the Native Americans and other workers their duties. The lifestyle in the California Missions was set in a very rigorous schedule so it was nearly impossible for the Native Americans to take a break or escape the hardship. The Natives resisted colonization after just a short time living and working at the Missions. There were a few deadly rebellions conducted by the Native Americans. They destroyed Mission property and even threatened to kill priests. The most infamous attack occurred in San Diego. On November 4, 1775, hundreds of men completely destroyed the Cuiamac Rancheria Mission of San Diego. The men also killed three Hispanics, including the Father, Padre Jaime (Sandos, 92). Hackel illustrates how Serra wanted to build missionaries because of the way he saw the Indians. He believed that he would be able to civilize them, therefore, thought that "they would be on the road to salvation." (pg. 168). This quote supports Hackel's main argument because his voyage to California to "save" the Indians resulted in his missionaries being built. It conveys him as being one of the founders of California. Moreover, Hackel's thesis is convincing due to the fact that the civilization of California was important as it was the introduction to European lifestyles in those areas which helped those who now live in California (and shows where our lifestyle was acquired). However, while Hackel displays the heroic acts that some may associate with Serra, it also shows how he would also be considered a bad colonist. The way that he wants to uproot the Indian's lifestyle and rule them is associated with colonization. Furthermore, Hackel successfully reveals how this was a hard process for Serra as many Indians did not like the idea and all the changes. Ultimately, his efforts to civilize California outweighs his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Monterey Bay Experience Essay In order to gain more knowledge and a better understanding of postcolonial discourses within the context of the Monterey Bay area I conducted my field research at the Carmel mission. I decided to do my field research relating to the carmel mission because I am interested in the psychological effects Native Americans experienced during the creation of the missions and how the missionaries affected them. In addition, other reasons why I chose this postcolonial issue is because I wanted to gain more knowledge on the missions, since I was given a very vague historical description in primary school. Lastly, I was curious in this topic because I wanted to engage in multiple perspectives and to hear what individuals really knew about the mission. Moreover, the Carmel mission was founded in June of 1770 by Saint Junipero Serra. The mission was primarily built to convert natives, establish territory, and create stopping points along California. Native american tribes such as the Esselen and other Costanoan tribes were the main groups who lived in that area who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition native culture, language, and spiritual practices were often forbidden under the mission system. Next, you will learn about the routine of the native americans and about which tribes were brought to this mission. Well first of all,to clarify which Native Americans were brought there, it was the Ohlone and the Chochenyo that were brought to the mission to be baptized(from The article The History of Mission Santa Clara(Santa Clara University website)). Ok so each morning, the native americans were awakened by a church bell and were sent to church which was before breakfast and after breakfast is work. • 15. Serra's Canonization As Serra's canonization may have come as a moment of deep pride for Latinos and Catholic alike, it was obviously also a source of great controversy for many Native Americans. They have since grown weary of the deception and the corruption on the part of many different outfits of the Catholic Church. In one particularly angering case from 1986, the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, California, where Father Serra is buried, released a report that found no evidence of Native American mistreatment. Despite the utter lack of respect and false research from that report, there are also proponents of the Church who have acknowledged Serra's crimes against Native Americans, both then and now. However, this doesn't come without a catch that still keeps... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The acceptance and even glorification of his 'good deeds' also played an immense role. Many have touted Serra as a champion for Native American rights despite the clear historical evidence supporting the idea that he was a forceful evangelizer who saw himself and the Spanish as superior beings to the Native Americans. Although many say Serra was better than most missionaries of his time, it still doesn't account for all the heinous crimes he committed. Robert M. Senkewicz, a history professor at Santa Clara University rightfully said that while Serra represented "the softer side of Spanish colonialism," he still actively participated in a system in which "violence and coercion were an integral part." One could argue that the only real reason why this historical narrative hasn't been rightfully rewritten is that its roots are in a religious institution. Not just any institution, the Catholic church yields power and influence on a global scale. Yet again, we see the presence of both an oppressor as well as the oppressed. The Catholic Church has been viewed as the 'defender of all that is right and just' throughout history because it claims that many of its unholy actions were carried out in the name of God. As we study history to make sense of the present, we can often become naГЇve, accepting 'facts' at face value. With that said, we form 'silences' just like in the historical narrative ... Thesis The initial Spanish settlers were both successful and not successful as well in achieving their American Dream in due to the fact that they had the missions and their control over California as well as lost all of their hold on California and the missions because of the Mexicans that rebelled against the Spanish Crown.12 Origins The Spanish were a group of people from the great country of Spain in Europe. The rulers at the time, Ferdinand the Second of Aragon and Isabella of Castille was able to finance one man. The man was the legendary explorer of the seas, Christopher Columbus.3 He was the one who started the Spanish interest of the Americas. He showed the Crown what the Americas have. Christopher Columbus was the one to land in the Americas first for the Spanish Empire, but not the first Spaniard to land and set up Spain's grip on the Northern Americas, especially in California. That belonged to Hernan CortГ©s. CortГ©s's voyage was first funded by a third party, Diego VelГЎzquez. Even if the overall territory was neglected, the Spanish people did want to settle the land. Settlement was supported ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Junipero Serra Religion Junipero Serra: Missionary or Murderer? "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." These are the words we were taught as early young Americans. However, there is a man who's actions have denied the Native Americans' liberty and justice, and his name is Junipero Serra. Junipero Serra was a Spanish missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Word of God to the natives of America so that He can forge his path: the path to Heaven. Although many of them were eager to become transformed by God, Serra's methods of conversion became their destruction rather than their solution. Pope Francis recognizes him for his "selfless acts" rather than his acts of genocide. Ironically, Serra believed that teaching the Native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He did convert the Native Americans successfully. He did stand up for them when Spanish authority got involved. Serra just did not do the right things. He probably realized that there was already an issue with communications. He and the friars were oblivious to how the Native Americans felt because they could not comprehend what the friars said and they could not explain their feelings. Also, force is not something that should be used when trying to convert someone into Catholicism; force should not even be an option. Violence and capital punishment in order to discipline others will only lead to increasing fear and decreasing support for the mission. Lastly, his actions went against what he was taught and what he was trying to teach. He may not have liked this world, but he proves to be a bad example of a Saint. Self harm, subjugation, and ignorance are not what makes a person a good example OR a Saint. In fact, Serra should not have been deemed by a Saint because the law of the Roman Catholic Church states that he must perform a few miracles. However, Pope Francis found a loophole and was able to canonize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Community Immersion Analysis On Community Introduction The definition of Community, Netting, Kettner, McMurty and Thomas (2012) stated by Warren (1978) "Community is the combination of social units and systems that perform the major social functions relevant to meeting people's needs on a local level."(p.133). Understanding communities is important to social workers as they have, Netting et al (2012) "to know individuals functions within larger systems, understanding of its history and that communities constantly change" (p. 168). A community has many parts that make it work together; when one part is not working well, it affects the entire system. Social Workers are able to analyze, interpret data and work with community groups and leaders to find solutions to improve the workings of that community to its full potential. This community immersion analysis will focus on its community's social agencies, diversity and cultural richness. Systems Theory applies to this area as the macro system of this community's main downtown street is filled with stores, restaurants, cultural establishments where locals as well as tourist convene (Netting, 2012) "that carries out production as well as school and religious sites work to socialize community members." • 34. Purpose And Symbolism Of The Leather Belt The object that I chose to discuss is the Leather Belt. This object came from one of the most well–known Native American tribes in the United States, the Navajo. The Navajo tribe was, and currently is, located within the four states of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado– also known as the Four Corners of the southwestern United States. Many people in the region still speak the Navajo language, as well as English. The Leather Belt was originally made of leather and strapped with eight silver "conchas," the Spanish word for shells. Some believe that the Native Americans stole this idea from the Mexicans. Within each shell, there is a silver coin design that has been stamped onto the concha. In order to attach the shells to the belt, each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Mission was initially constructed, many people would depend on the Mission for food and supplies. They would starve since they were always reliant on additional Missions and New Spain to send them food. Not only were the living conditions hard at the Mission, but the rules were demanding as well. The way of life at Mission Santa Barbara comprised of waking up at sunrise each morning for great prayer then going to work on the Mission. Work was not equal for everyone. Men, women and children were busy with their own jobs and those kept everyone busy throughout the day. Men would mostly go through hard labor in the fields and take care of the crops that were being gathered, or monitor the cattle. On the other hand, women and children classically remained inside the Mission and finished routine chores. Everyone who lived in the Mission understood that they were likely to follow the Father's schedule and lifestyle. Not everybody could withstand such a strict lifestyle based on prayer and work; therefore, many individuals, particularly the Native Americans who were not accustomed to this lifestyle, would try to escape from Mission ... • 35. Junipero Serra In Junipero Serra by Steven Hackel a professor of history at the University of California, Riverside wrote about a figure in California history that is consider both controversial and inspirational. The book follows Junipero journey from Spain to Mexico to California. The author describes Junipero Serra as someone who is determined to his cause of spreading the Gospel among California Natives. However, I believe that the way the author wrote the book has some inconsistency with the title given that the title is interpreted as Junipero Serra history in California but for more than half of the book, the author wrote about Junipero Serra life before his arrival to California. On the other hand, the author of the book tries to portray Junipero Serra balance person who is neither bad nor good... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, In Junipero Serra's letter to the Viceroy asking pardon Junipero Serra is almost passionate: "Give him to understand . . . that he is being pardoned in accordance with our law, which commands us to forgive injuries, and let us prepare him, not for death, but for eternal life." Well if you haven't then this is your lucky day, I will be talking about Mission San Carlos Borromeo Del Rio Carmelo or Mission Carmelo. It was built on June 3, 1770 about 120 miles north of San Francisco at the mouth of Carmel Valley, on a hillside less than a mile from the sea. It's named after St Charles of Borromeo. Junipero Serra built and he also kept it in his responsibility until he died then it was handed over to father Lesuen and now it is in the hands of Harry Downie. • 37. The Impact Of Saint Junipero Serra Saint Junipero Serra was born on the Island of Majorca on the 24th of November, 1713.1 To many, he is often regarded as the founder and spiritual guardian of old Alta California, as witnessed in his rather common title, "The Father of California." 2 In response to this, an intelligent student of history might ask himself, "What effect did the man really have, if any at all?" To find the answer, one must delve back into the history of old Spanish California, taking a good look at the padre's past. To that end, this report aims to present the logical conclusion from the facts and the evidence. Saint Junipero's ultimate impact will be discerned with the following, especially his helping to found modern California, his teaching and helping of the Indians, and his helping to bring the Catholic Faith. To actually discern whether or not Saint Junipero Serra had a great effect on modern California, one must first analyze the effect he had on old Spanish California. With this thought in mind, the first possible thing to look at is the missions. These crusty, old adobe buildings, or groups of buildings, were mainly used as headquarters and ... • 38. How Did The Spanish Americans Build Religion In The 1700s In the 1700s, the Spanish wanted to expand their culture and religion because they wanted their wealth and power to grow. They also wanted to settle where no other Europeans would settle. To keep out the Europeans, they stationed strong military services by these missionaries. From Spain, the Fathers were sent to Northern America, settling in California, to spread Christian practices. Our very first missions was established by Father Junipero Serra. He helped establish missions such as the San Diego de Alcala and the San Antonio de Padua. San Luis Obispo History Center San Luis Obispo History Center: Walking up to the San Luis Obispo History center was confusing at first, seeing the free library sign caught me off guard but the inside was different than I expected. This was my first time at the center and I always figured that it was just another random house that was built on the outskirts of San Luis Obispo, but what I found inside was actually quite interesting. The employee at the center was actually quite insightful and discussed how the center is changing and bringing a new exhibit to the center every 6 months. Looking through the exhibits some of the information brought forward was quite interesting. Learning what clothing was worn throughout previous years was very interesting. Seeing... There was also a more recent exhibit about the internment of Japanese citizens during the period of WW2. I thought the layout of the center was well put together in a fashion that showed a lot so you could learn a lot, but didn't have too much so a viewer wouldn't get lost within the exhibits. The only thing I could think about changing would be the outside appearance. With only one sign outside it's hard to attract anyone that's not specifically looking for it. If I was passing through San Luis Obispo and stopped at the History Center, leaving I would think that San Luis Obispo used to be one of the major stops in the rural central coast community.
