Essay On Tribal Masks
Since the ancient times, tribal masks play a huge role in the traditional ceremonies and dance regalia of Native American tribes. The Northwest Coast
Indians are the most prominent native mask–makers who carve intricate ceremonial/dance masks. Believing that the world is led by supernatural beings
or spirits, several cultures created masks worn ceremonially to connect and appease with these forces. Two of the prominent Native American masks are
the Iroquois False Face masks and the Hopi Kachina masks.
False Face Masks of the Iroquois
The False Face masks are regarded as "living" and are "fed" with tobacco. They are characterized by distorted features with deep–set eyes accented by
metal. They have long white or black hair from the horse's tail. Their noses are crooked and bent. Tobacco is tied onto the hair above the forehead.
False Face masks are made primarily from basswood. The man making the mask is guided by the spirit to discover the right wood in the forest for the
false face mask. The masks were thought to be inhabited by the spirit of the tree. The spirit stimulates the distinctive elements of the design in which
the product represents the spirit itself. As it is carved from a living tree, the mask is removed when completed.
The face is painted based on the time of day it was cut as well as the meaning of the mask. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each member had a spirit that directed its mask carving from a live tree. The False Face masks are used in healing rituals, invoking the spirit of an
old hunchbacked man that offers him corn mush and tobacco. The invoked protects people from fierce winds and illness. "Among certain Iroquois, a
mask is seen as alive, traditional, and powerful regardless of whether or not invocations have been made." Thus, the mask is regarded as a living
representation of a spirit. Whenever the mask is not worn, it is considered as a living

Should Wearing Wear A Mask?
Those who are able to perform their daily routines in such a way that their stigma effectively "disappears" to observers might be considered to have a
full–coverage mask that is so lifelike, that they may convince others that the representation of the mask is their physical face. Others might wear a full
coverage mask by transmitting with someone using a method that eliminates attributes that might be evident in face–to–face communication or by
creating the illusion that a stigmatizing characteristic is actually a temporary circumstance.
While one might choose to wear a mask perpetually, it is not ever bound to the skin of the face; there may be various ways and contexts in which it
can be removed. Individuals may choose to only wear their masks in places that they deem that they could never be accepted or in front of specific
people, while putting less effort into managing their communication in places and in front of those deemed to be safe (Goffman, 1963, p. 81). Often,
one with a stigma might make an effort to carefully conceal an attribute in front of strangers, but would remove their mask when they are with those
whom they are intimate with (p. 74). However, there is not a strict dichotomy between public as unsafe and private as safe. An individual might need
to reveal a stigma to certain members of the public while revealing himself to others in the same space (p. 73). Likewise, he might choose to remove
their mask for a particular member of their family, but not

Dunbar's Poem 'We War The Mask'
Questions for "We Wear the Mask:"
The mask that is described in this poem is meant to represent the hiding of the emotions and the identity of an individual. It references the idea that in
order for one to survive in the world, one must hide their true personality, feelings, and in the context of this poem, their race.
The line, "[...] debt we pay to human guile," is used to imply the feelings of shame and guilt that come with the deceit one commits when they hide
themselves. When a person hides behind a mask, they become unable to truly connect with any other human beings, on the grounds that the negativity
linked with the mask often prevents proper interaction, in which emotions are key.
In Dunbar's original context of the poem, he uses "we," in order to clearly state that the poem is created from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is due to the comparison between the author and dust, but is different from a metaphor due to the use of the word "like."
The poetic device used in the line, "You may cut me with your eyes," can be considered to be an example of personification. The line emphasizes the
idea that eyes have the power to physically harm someone or something, while in reality they lack this ability. This attaches a specific human trait or
characteristic to something that would not have this trait otherwise.
After reading Maya Angelou's poem, "Still I Rise," it becomes very clear that Angelou is proud of her race, and finds power from her past, as well as
her culture. Throughout the poem, Angelou reiterates the positivity that she associates with being black, and she does so while inciting feelings of
great power and inspiration. She will still rise, no matter who, or what, attempts to tear her down. Angelou makes it very clear that she will not be
silenced, she will not hide, and most importantly, she will not be ashamed of her race or

In this essay I am going to look at the Makishi Masquerades and the Transmission of knowledge among the Chokwe and related people together with
the Pwo mask, the Bambara tribe of Mali and the Chi Wara antelope mask, and also at the role that the Holo mask plays in the Ngidi and Makanda
initiation rites (African masks history and meaning, S.a.; African art and architecture, 2001).
3. CONTEXT OF CEREMONIAL AFRICAN MASKING AND THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS THEREOF
3.1 The Makishi Masquerades among the Chokwe and related people
The Chokwe are famous for art items produced to celebrate and legalize the royal court. The art objects can include elaborately carved stools and
chairs used as thrones. Most of the sculptures are portraits, which represent the royal ancestry. Staffs, sceptres, and spears are among other implements
sculpted to celebrate the court. Chokwe origin can perhaps be traced to the Mbuti and Pygmies. Between 1600 and 1850 they were under extensive
influence from the Lunda states and were centrally located in Angola. In the second half of the 19th century though, substantial improvement of the
trade routes between the Chokwe homelands and the Angolan coast led to increased trade of ivory and rubber. Wealth acquired from this allowed the
Chokwe kingdom to develop, eventually overtaking the Lunda states that had held sway over them for so long. Their success was short–lived,
however, the effects of

Use Of Mask As A Believable And Consistent Character For...
With reference to your own process, discuss and analyse how the use of mask affected your approach to creating character. Compare how it differs
from working without mask, assessing benefits and any perceived drawbacks. Discuss its potential effect, if any, on your work in non mask theatre.
In this essay I will argue that the use of mask is vital in creating a believable and consistent character for performance. The techniques used in masks not
only help to define a character but also help an actor improve their improvisation techniques.
Jacques Lecoq wanted to "explore the hidden gestures, emotions and underlying states of a character, which we express through mimages" [109: 2002,
Bloomsbury] I incorporated both the mimages and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Draco would then scoff before dropping it elsewhere.
When making my mask, I wanted to create one that oozed authority with a hint of smarminess. I was ultimately surprised by the outcome, my end
product was a trickster. The raised eyebrow however led to a smirk which ultimately led to the name Draco; a genus of reptiles, very apt for my
character.
However, the eviller Draco became the more drastic a counter mask had to be. As our piece was dedicated to stealing a picture of ''Zefron– Zac Efron",
when ripped, Draco had to flip suddenly.
I drew upon the counter mask exercises we had developed in rehearsals. Changing everything that made Draco who he was. His ever–present sneer
faded into a frown and a wail.
To achieve Draco's mannerism and voice I charged my mask. Copying the arched eyebrow on the mask I found a nasally voice with an added scoff at
the end. I then began to work on my inner dramatic monologue.
I wanted to keep in mind that Draco thought himself above everyone else hence a simple inner monologue; "I am surrounded by idiots...peasants, they
should be quivering in my mere presence."
Getting the temperament of Draco however was difficult. Despite embodying the arlecchino mask I wanted Draco to keep an air of authority, the
temperament I chose for Draco was Choleric "This way follow me, follow me this way now!".
All the exercises and techniques I used to develop Draco greatly helped me in perfecting his character, from Lecoq's 7 states to chekov's centres.

We Wear Mask
An Analysis of "We Wear the Mask" In a world where pain is mocked, and genuine kindness is ridiculed, members of our society have grown to feel
that it is necessary to hide, and create false images to protect our inner selves. Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, "We Wear the Mask", uses strategic
iambic tetrameter as well as symbolism to emphasis and display the natural man's tendencies to hide behind metaphorical masks. In his poem, Dunbar
uses imagery that allows the reader to visualize the person hiding behind the mask. He discusses what the mask hides, "our cheeks", "our eyes", "our
tears and sighs", implying that the mask is a carefully plotted façade which is meant to shield a truly broken person from the harsh, unforgiving world.

The Use Of N95 Masks Versus Surgical Masks
At OHSU's Bone Marrow Transplant unit (BMT) and at the outpatient center for Hematologic Malignancies (CHM) clinic, BMT patients are not fitted
for N95 masks, yet they are being asked to wear them. Therefore, the current issue is whether or not the unfitted N95 masks are actually more
beneficial than surgical masks for the patients. This is because we are asking them to be worn while not fitting them. I selected this topic because I
noticed there were inconsistencies within the practice of each nurse regarding the use of N95 masks versus surgical masks. When I probed deeper, I
realized that some of the nurses didn't know OHSU policy and were using best practice from another institution, which stated to use surgical masks
when transporting patients off of the unit. This made me wonder why different institutions would have different policies and what the actual best
practice is according to evidence. The OHSU Policy #HC–NSG–BMT–205–POL Infection Control Policy for Adult and Pediatric Oncology
/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) Units states that patients shall wear an N–95 mask when outside the HEPA–filtered environment
(OHSU, 2016).
This is important to me from a leadership role development because as an informal nurse leader, it is my responsibility to own my own practice. In
order to do this appropriately, I must fully understand the policy of my place of employment and if that policy is not aligned with current best
evidence, it is my responsibility to

Masks In Fahrenheit 451
The literary device of the mask in Fahrenheit 451, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Lord of the Flies is recurring in each of the stories. The
metaphoric mask is a both physical and symbolic object that alters the characteristics of an individual; usually the protagonist. The protagonist either
gradually puts on or takes off the mask to change as a person. The mask itself acts how you would expect a real mask to work. A mask typically
obscures the vision so that you can only see in one direction, and some obscure our vision to a blur. Despite that, the mask has a much deeper
connotation in literature. The obscurity produced by the mask placed on one is not a true mask, but an event or decision significantly altering the
traits of an individual. Such a transition is portrayed in literature as the putting on or removal of an actual mask. This makes easier for readers to
understand, and creates a perceptible connection between the symbolism and reality. In the Lord of the Flies and Star Wars:... Show more content on

Jack was also described as slowly becoming more inhumane. Children near him described his laughing as becoming more of a "snarling." The mask

Masks In MAUS II By Art Spiegelman
Masks are used in society to conceal one's appearance and also as a means for impersonation. When we encounter someone wearing a mask, we
assume they are pretending to be whatever that mask depicts. We are aware that there is a person underneath, but we assume that they bear no
resemblance to the mask they wear. If they were, then why would they were a mask in the first place? In graphic novel MAUS II, Art Spiegelman tells
the story of his father's experiences within the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz (1992). There are many visual themes or motifs present throughout
this graphic novel, but one important motif represented are masks. Spiegelman is shown in this graphic novel contemplating if he is worthy or has the

In these scenes, we again see the mask motif being depicted by Spiegelman. In an earlier scene, Art is shown morphing his character from an adult
to a childlike version of himself (42). In society children are symbols of nativity and immaturity. Conversely, adults are symbols of wisdom and
growth. By showing this transformation, Spiegelman is showing that he feels less of an adult when compared to his father and less of a Jewish
person than those survivors of Auschwitz. Spiegelman has now illustrated art as a child with a mask mouse on. This drawing of Art conveys to the
reader that he sees himself not only as inadequate, but also not authentically Jewish as well. As Art speaks to Pavel, he continues to take this form.
He also confirms to Pavel his feelings of inadequacy by explaining once again "No matter what I accomplish, it doesn't seem like much compared to
surviving Auschwitz" (44). He is still consumed with these feelings of not being Jewish enough. As he converses with Pavel, Art confirms to Pavel that
he admires his dad for surviving Auschwitz (45). When Pavel mentions to Art that those who died in the Holocaust cannot tell their story, Art replies by
quoting "every word is a stain on silence and nothingness" (45). This interaction implies that Art concurs that speaking on such an event like the
Holocaust by those who did not experience it, is a

The Transformation Masks Of The Kwakwaka
The transformation masks of the Kwakwaka'wakw culture were ritual items. Kwakwaka'wakw does not refer to only one tribe but numerous others.
Kwakwaka'wakw consists of 17 tribes in their nation in total that originally spoke the language. The kwakwaka 'wakw nation is found in the northwest
coast of British Columbia, Canada. The many different nation of the kwakwaka'wakw is extremely diverse, although there are commonalities. For
example many of the groups relate that their ancestors roamed the world transforming themselves into animals. This is also shows how the masks have
two face in one as to represent their ancestors. Even though the culture has such an amazing artistic style and rituals the people underwent
numerous struggles to hold onto them. The Kwakwaka'wakw bands consist of four clans (killer whale, raven, eagle, and wolf). The clans are
divided by numayn (or na' mina) which can be loosely translated as "groups of fellows of the same". Numayns were responsible for safeguarding
family crest and for conveying their specific rights. This could have included access to natural resources such as fishing areas and rights to sacred
names and dances related to their ancestors or the group's origin. The numayns were ranked and typically were the only ones to fill in a spot at any
given time in a group. Each rank entitled them to specific rights as well, such as ceremonial privileges. These ceremonial privileges included the right
to wear masks. Animal transformation masks

How Do Masks Affect The Use Of Mask
In this essay, I will argue that the use of masks is vital in creating a believable and consistent character for performance. The techniques I have used in

Jacques Lecoq wanted to "explore the hidden gestures, emotions and underlying states of a character, which we express through mimages" [2002:
P.109]. I incorporated both the mimages and Seven States of Tension tohelp me to determine how my mask; Draco, would react in different situations.
As John Martin states, "every part says something" [2004: p.68]. This is something I tried to captivate in my development of Draco. However, before

Copying the arched eyebrow on the mask I found a smarmy, nasally voice, I enjoyed doing this as it helped me to achieve the temperament of Draco;
Choleric. I had to make sure I did not differentiate from his features. As Rudlin states: "You a prisoner of the mask" [1994: P.35], thus meaning I was
bound by Draco's expressions.
Clocking was essential for Draco as he needed to constantly hold the audience's attention. It also helped to pinpoint key moments; looking at the dirty
rag, clock the audience, placing the rag elsewhere. This moment also tied in with the characteristics of the Arlecchino.
Toby Wilsher states that countermask is "one of the simplest but most effective tools" [2007: p.30]. As the countermask would help me achieve any
emotion despite Draco's features I could flip him from trickster to turmoil. It also affected my centre, taking me from a centre of my chest to my knees
centre, bringing Draco to the floor as his ever–present sneer faded into a frown and a wail.
All the techniques I used to develop Draco helped me in creating a character. Each exercise helped me to pin point Draco further and explore him in
ways that non–mask theatre would not. I prefer to act with a mask however, it is easy to slip out of character, therefore the face of the mask must
always be pulled. I found if my facial expression slipped, the entire character began to

Defense Of Masks By Kenneth Gergen
What are masks? One usually thinks it is an object the individual puts on and takes off.
When given the thought, one makes the comparison that masks are used to describe our personalities. In "In Defense of Masks" by Kenneth Gergen,
he describes the conclusions of other psychologists that one needs to live with a "coherent sense of identity"(Gergen, 198). In other words, they have
deduced that one should develop a consistent sense of self to which they can always be true to. Gergen's research has led him to believe those
assumptions are false. He doubts the idea of a "coherent sense of identity" because individuals will acquire emotional distress. Gergen claims that we
cannot have a self to be true to at all time since we have multiple masks. All the mask that one possesses changes their behavior and in turn, adds to
their personality. Likewise, our masks change depending on the given social situation. Gregg Henriques'
"One Self or Many Selves" givens a claim that: "In sort, change the situation and you change my behavior and thus I enter into a different self–state
(para 11). He explains himself being disconnected on an uninteresting topic; otherwise, he is passionate about the conversations.
Situations matter because it dictates how one will react based on the given moment. For example, "Parents, friends, lovers, teachers, kin, counselor,
acquaintances all behave differently towards us..."(Gergen, 198). Likewise the case, Henriques asserts that masks are constructed for

presented as the speaker communicates in first person as well as using the word choice of "we." In the opening lines: "[w]e wear the mask that grins

The Necklace: Figurative Masks
Figurative masks varies from one person to the next. For you, it may be pride, however for your neighbor, it could be wealth or tranquility. Since the
human population is unimaginably diverse, we all possess distinctive masks, and it can be anything that harbours your true self. The human race uses
figurative masks to modify their personas to counteract unjust treatments. I personally use a tough mask as a coping mechanism as this trait or
characteristic helps protect and conceal my true self, which ultimately assists me in prevailing unjust treatment that I receive. In the social context of
The Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant, pride and social status are prominent veils that majority of the people wore. Mathilde, the lead
character, values this wealthy veil and believes that if she wears that veil, people will not judge her in her social status. expresses it through wearing the

She finds that the unjust treatment she had was being born into no dowry and no mediocre social status. In this quote, she herself believes that she

own internal conflict as Mathilde lacks a lot of resentment and is full of contentment with her ordinary life and falls under the punishment of poverty
at the end. She then uses the mask of perseverance to at least receive a tiny piece of pity or reward from both her friends and higher class society,
whom she envied quite lots. Her persona of being a hard–worker puts her under a good light, an aura that makes her look good. This helps lessen the

Essay On The Mask In Lord Of The Flies
Everyone thinks of a mask, as a silly object that makes people laugh, the book Lord of The Flies proves otherwise. To begin with, the English boys
were on a plane heading towards safety from the German air raids, until all of a sudden the plane started heading down for an island. As the plane
was inching towards the deep jungles of the island, it hit with a sudden strike that scared every living thing in its way. Everyone survived the plane
crash except the pilot who probably shot right through his window like a slingshot. An English boy named Ralph and his new friend Piggy were
the first of the characters to find each other after the accident. Often Ralph teased him because his name was Piggy and it matched him perfectly.
Piggy was fat, stubby, wore glasses, and had asthma. As the boys wandered the island they found a conch shell within thick vines. They managed to
get it out, and Ralph blew into it a couple of times. Suddenly, every boy from the plane crash was alarmed and they started to walk over to Ralph.
Consequently, the teenage boys and the littluns established order and gave each other specific jobs to accomplish while staying on the island. Ralph
was in charge of making shelter with a couple of other boys, while a boy named Jack was in charge of the choir, but later on became in charge of the
hunters. The mask in Lord of The Flies begins as a symbol of surviving, becomes violent, and concludes as a symbol of evil.
Specifically, in the beginning of the story, the

I enjoyed reading "We Wear The Mask". It was fun to analyze and break down the poem. I could relate this poem is many ways. I have felt the

to act as if I was perfect and made no mistakes. The result of that was that I never learned how to grow from my mistakes because if I even

Masks Depicted In Paul Laurence Dunbar's They Wear The Mask
In society, people are constantly worried about "fitting in" and fear being themselves will hinder their ability to conform to society. Many people fear
that being themselves will have a detrimental effect on their social life, and others feel that they are outcasts and that they need to be someone they're
not in order to be socially accepted. People often try to hide their true personality, and wear a "mask." To metaphorically wear a mask is to express
yourself the way you want to be seen, rather than how you actually feel. This instills the idea that one's own personality is not good enough, creating a
fear of being yourself, causing people to wear a "mask." People wear these masks in an attempt to navigate in society, to preserve innocence, ... Show

For example, Mr. Dolphus Raymond pretends he is drinking alcohol when he is really drinking coke so that people have an explanation for his
lifestyle. Instead of just saying he wants to live with blacks, he wears a mask to make people think he is a drunk. He wears this mask in order to
navigate in society and "try to give 'em a reason" (228). Mr. Raymond also tells Scout and Dill that, "It ain't honest but it's mighty helpful to folks.
Secretly, Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that's the way I want to

Masks In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
People put on a different mask depending on what "part" they are trying to play. Whether that be with peers, friends, teachers or parents you change
because of the surroundings. The disguise changes the perspective and perception of that person. Masks can make you feel untouchable while you wear
them, but when you take the mask off you feel regret about the acts committed while wearing your disguise. The power masks hold over people is hard
to explain, they can turn the innocent into the barbaric. Masks have been worn throughout history. A good but ambiguous example of hiding behind a
mask is the German Nazi Swastika that symbolizes World War Two. The Nazi's Swastika resembles the German's masking of genocide, deception, and
tragedy. They wore this on their left arm and felt domination. They did not feel remorse for the inhumane acts they committed while hiding behind
"their masks." Once the war had completed, many Germans felt disgrace for their actions. The novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding was
published at about the same time World War Two was occurring. Golding took ideas from the annihilation of the war and put it into the context of
his story. Some of his ideas were inspired from the cruelty of war. William Golding was a British novelist, playwright, and poet known for his award
winning book Lord of the Flies, published in 1954. In Lord of the Flies, most of the boys abandoned the civilized society they had always lived, and

Lord Of The Flies Mask Analysis
Life is a costume party in which some are tricked and others are treated. Imagine a world where one's true self was hidden behind a series of masks,
each mask hiding an individual's specific character flaw, personality trait or even a desire to do harm. Against the backdrop of World War II,
uniformed soldiers presented themselves to an enemy as a single mass of camouflaged danger. Each similarly dressed and trained to kill or capture an
enemy without feeling any remorse. William Golding's own involvement during World War II allowed him to experience wearing his ownmask while
tremendous violence was occurring as he was aboard a Royal Navy boat in 1940. Further, his involvement in the battle of Normandy(France) and
the epic struggle on its beaches is reflected in his writing in the lives of young boys who similarly try to maintain order on their own island.
Therefore in the same way that a soldier's uniform provides anonymity, the characters in William Golding's Novel The Lord of the Flies wore masks
to conceal their true identity, shown when Jack who is civilized put on a mask to become a savage, and when Roger took off his civilist mask to
reveal his inherently present inner savage.
Golding exemplified how decorous Jack was without his face painted and hidden in the ending of chapter one. This was the first time the boys went
out and had to figure out how to hunt in order to survive by themselves. Jack along with Ralph and Simon came across a piglet snarled in the

Using Symbolic Masks In Ancient Greeks
People use masks for more than one reason, but masks are often used to prove a point or to show an emotion. Even in ancient Greece, dramatic masks
were used in theater so that people in the top row of an amphitheater could see the emotion on actors' faces. This use of masks was for entertainment,
but it also stresses the importance of human emotion and how important it was considered even to the ancient Greeks. Some people, however, don't use
an added mask to show human emotion. They use their face, and that face can serve as the only mask necessary to prove a point. A face can be a
mask that is used to show people someone's emotion literally, or it can be used as a figurative mask to hide emotion. It is ironic how the literal masks

Summary: The Influence Of Health Masks
Masks are often worn in tribal or religious ceremonies, to conceal a person's identity for the sake of protection, and in costume play. Masks offer
people the opportunity to both conform and deviate from the culture within which they find themselves. In the wake of the SARS pandemic of 2003,
photos of people in China wearing health masks circulated on nightly news reports. Since that time, wearing health masks, not only in medical settings
but also in public settings, is now a common part of Asian culture (Phend). Outside of a medical setting such as a doctor's office or hospital, wearing a
health mask goes against the social norm in America; it is not a common practice. Deviating from social norms invites sanctions––positive or negative

The most common reaction I got from wearing the mask, was no reaction at all. I attribute this to the sociological idea of studied non–observance.
Studied non–observance is a face–saving technique in which members of society do not draw attention to minor deviations from the normal
performance a person plays in society, allowing the person to continue in spite of the deviation (Henslin 117). Indeed, after my research was
conducted, I had several people come back to the library and they confirmed this idea; stating they obviously noticed the mask, but because I was
acting fine and seemed able to do my job normally, they didn't find it necessary to draw attention to the fact I was wearing it. Familiar with the setting
and my usual manner, they were allowing my performance as their librarian to go on even though my appearance had

Live In, directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, explores how our culture's narrow definition of masculinity is harming our boys and men. The film
educates the viewers about the emotional expression, suicide rates, and sexuality of men. "MAN UP! Men don't cry" are words that sound all too
familiar to me; I was told this while growing up as a young boy in America. I, along with majority of males in the United States, were taught that
crying or showing any form of sadness was a females trait. Society believes that a man should be mentally strong, and showing those... Show more

The initial problem with is idea is that it objectifies and belittle a woman's worth. Under deeper analysis, it creates an uneasy peer pressure that all
males in society are affected by.. Boys, as young as elementary school student, feels pressured to have relations with females, which is very premature
thought. The comparison of who gets more girl leads to insecurities, and those insecurities leads to a man to develop hyper masculine qualities.
According to the class text, hypermasculinity is the exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression,
and sexuality. Hypermasculinity is toxic to the progression of society because it perpetuate stereotypes that men should be extremely manly and if he
is not, than he is "soft" or "homosexual". Masculinity should not be measured by sexual conquest, in fact masculinity should not be measured at all,
society should realize that not all males will be the same, this idea will eliminate

My Mask Research Paper
My mask features materials such as white tissue paper, pearl balls, silver glitter, sparkly paper, silver flowers and silver pen. These materials were used
on my mask to give it a bright and pure white look. Masks were worn at masquerade balls for the purpose of hiding ones true identity, wearing a mask
like this would give the illusion that the wearer was perfect, or angelic. Except, for around the eyes where I also used a black marker and red glitter
glue for the pattern on there. Generally the only recognisable feature on someones face while wearing a mask, are the eyes. Which happens to be the
darkest part of the mask. Therefor, the mask is saying that beneath this pure and plain mask, is a flawed person, a real person.

Masks In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Masks are a covering for parts of the face that are worn for a disguise, pleasure, or to scare people. Greek theatre utilizes masks innumerable times for
evident characters in their plays. The actors/actresses who position their masks on, become divergent people. The denotation the boys' have behind the
mask is unique from when they have the mask off. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the mask is used as a disguise from their normal society and
civilization. Jack, Ralph and Roger prove that this statement is true throughout the novel. Golding once said that civilization is "the mask which enables
the individual to hide his primitive nature." This illustrates how one will disguise himself as someone or something that triggers their primal nature.
William Golding's purpose in writing this novel is to present to the readers when an individual loses connections with society they can regenerate one's
true self to become someone they are not. The masks are utilized by these three characters to shield their nefarious doings. Jack, Ralph and Roger all
have measures that delineate the diabolic and shadow within all humanity. To start off, Jack is guiltless at the beginning of the novel, until he turns
himself into a new person. For one, Jack wants laws and organization at the start and wants to discipline whoever violates them and eventually he is the
first to contravene them. Furthermore, Jack is the initial one to influence the boys to infringe the rules and destruct the

Pain And Torment In 'We Wear The Mask'
The speaker of "We Wear the Mask" talks about people covering their pain and torment by smiling through the pain or hiding their true selves with a
"mask". They question why the world should have to see their tears and sighs. The speaker changes their focus and becomes more emotional, and
cries for help for this feeling of being forced to hide. The speaker cries for help by proclaiming, "We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from
tortured souls arise." (lines 10–11). The repetition of the word "smile" shows that they cover the same emotions up with the mask, which suggests that
when they start feeling emotional, they will smile to cover their agony. When the speaker continues with the phrase "O great Christ", they show that they

We Wear The Mask Summary
Hiding our faces from human guile "We Wear the Mask" is a poem written by Dunbar Paul Laurence the American poet and novelist. This poem is
a very relatable and sad. The poem talks about the mask that people wear to hide their emotions and personality. It also talks about slavery and
African Americans who wear masks to hide their fear, sadness, and pain. In this poem the slaves do not just wear a mask to hide their feelings,
they smile and sing to appear perfect to society. During the slavery time slaves did not want to show their feelings because they thought it
weakness' them, and that the masters will not buy them if they were weak. Dunbar uses an imagery, and irony to describe how the slaves feel, this
technique was very helpful for the readers because it gave the reader a picture of the situation during slavery "With Torn and Bleeding Hearts We
Smile" (4). This poem describes how the African Americans had difficult times during the slavery although they kept smiling and pretending to be
happy, this poem also talks about the kind of pain they had which was bleeding and torn hearts because they were slaves. Slaves were treated very bad
and were tortured for just for being themselves. The slaves wear the mask so that no one will make fun of their feelings, emotions, and believes. ...

"We Sing but Oh the Clay Is Vile" (12). This is a pretty clear line that proves the slaves suffer and feel really bad in the inside but although they sing
and pretend that they fell happy. This can happen to anyone in life, many people lack confidence therefore they feel shy or ashamed of being
themselves and that will lead them to do only what people want them to do. People who hide their feeling and do things that do not make them happy
will have conflict inside them and they will always have internal

Mask Explanation
Mask Explanation and/or Reflection There are multiple different symbols and hidden meanings on my mask. These symbols mainly have to do with
events from the past and my current state in the present. When one looks upon the mask, the first thing they may notice is the black line going down
the middle, separating the past from present. Another good distinction between the past and present are the words written on the both halves of the mask
. On the brighter, more "positive" side, there lie the words "don't look back," as if symbolizing the necessity to move forward in life. The other, more
"negative" side of the mask has the words "look ahead," once again the symbolizing the need to move, and the need to draw attention away from the
bad side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They eye has a blue and yellow outline, which yield a very pleasing, bright color combination. They eyebrow is slanted up to portray a happier,
more relaxed look. The red plus represents the medical field, a field I hope to get into as it is my favorite. The orange and blue man right next to
the plus sign represents martial arts, a hobby in which I kept for six to seven years and I still plan on keeping. The other half of the mouth is
pointed upwards, showing satisfaction and happiness with the peace I managed to attain with myself. On top of the eyebrow, there are two
symbols (the soccer ball and the A+ grade) which represent some of my high school goals. These goals are to obtain good grades and make the
varsity soccer team (just to name a few). To the side of the mask, one may see a shooting star, which is an allusion to the saying "shoot for the
stars". My goals are to shoot for the stars, and I will stop at nothing to achieve them. Finally, below the mouth, there is an attempted drawing of a
fist. The fist symbolizes the will and dedication I have to move on and achieve my goals. The significant colors I used for the good side of the mask
are blue, orange, red, and yellow. They are bright colors and I was able to make some neat combinations which I used in the mask. The bright colors
symbolize brightness in my life as I beat whatever overcome me in my

The Theme Of Masks In Heather's : The Musical
Heather's: The Musical is a play that has multiple themes, but the theme of masks we wear in social realms, is the theme that was most prevalent to
me. The character of JD, portrayed by Justin Hart, uses masks more than any other character. JD starts out as a very relatable character, but as the
show progresses, he becomes harder to identify with, until you feel that the character is no longer redeemable. Hart's portrayal of JD keeps you
immersed in the story, and makes it seem as if the changes of JD's masks are seamless. Topic 1 As I mentioned, JD uses and changes masks more than
any other character in the play. His multiple masks are all very different from each other though. The first mask he wears is that of a mysterious new ...

Hart was able to accurately portray how most guys, and girls, felt in high school. When JD begins to date Veronica, things start to change, and the
character becomes harder to connect with on an emotional level. Once Heather Chandler dies, JD begins to show a different side of himself. He
changes, because he decides that he wants to make the town a better place. He desires this new town, so that there is no more bullying and
Veronica will be happy. He is so determined to make this mythical place a reality, that he begins to kill some of the other students at the school,
with no regard to how it will affect the rest of the students. This course of action leads him to lose not only Veronica, the girl he was doing all of it
for, but it causes him to ultimately lose his life as well. Hart helped to portray JD's transformation in his speech, and his body language, to the point
that it made the character become one of the least relatable characters. Topic 3 Hart's portrayal of JD is one of the most interesting aspects of the
play, in my opinion. In the beginning he made seem confident, timid, and his movements had a lanky quality to them. When JD would talk to his dad,
his demeanor would change to that of brute, and his speech was loud and simplified. The biggest difference to me, came when he began to want to
kill. His speech seemed to be a bit more precise, manipulative, and cutting, while his movement was

The Mask Of Symbols In Lord Of The Flies
The Mask of Symbols
I chose to make a mask to represent that there was a dark side to every character, not only Jack. This topic stood out to me because as the novel
progressed,I saw that no matter who they were, every character showed their dark side at some point, even Ralph in chapter twelve when he was
fighting for his life.I associate this mask to every single person. We all have a dark side, some just take more than others to unleash it.Some alternative
ideas I considered were creating a personal mask that represents darkness into the light.I didn't choose it because the mask of symbols had a deeper
image and stronger theme. Now as for the mask itself,it doesn't just represent one character, but all.A feature I really

Buk Masks Research
Buk (Mask)
The buk, or mask, comes from the Mabuiag island in the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait is located between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and
contains hundreds of islands. The mask is made of turtle shell, wood, fiber, feathers, and shell, and was created in the mid to late 19th century. Intricate
masks and figures made from plates of turtle shell are unique to the people of the Torres strait. The majority of pieces that come from this area
incorporate the use of the turtle shell in some way. This mask is divided into three registers; the top containing feathers, the middle containing the
face and body of a bird, and the bottom containing a human face. The mask includes certain decorative aspects that are stitched onto it, such as the
curved pieces on the side of the face or the raffia, or palm tree leaves, used as hair. This mask is one part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

people who were selected to be navigators. Each specific chart would depict general information about swell movements around one or more small
islands. Larger charts, known as rebbelibs, would cover larger sections or even the entirety of the Marshall

In Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem "We Wear the Mask," Dunbar uses the figurative wearing of masks to present a theme of denial of one's identity in

Power Masks In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Different people put on a different mask depending on what "part" they are playing . Whether that be with peers, friends, teachers or parents you
change because of the surroundings. Masks make you feel untouchable while you wear them, but when you take the mask off you feel monstrous about
the acts committed while wearing your disguise. The power masks hold cannot be explained, they can turn the innocent into the barbaric. Masks have
been worn throughout history. A good example is the German Nazi Swastika that symbolizes World War Two. The Nazi's Swastika resembles their
mask
of genocide, deception, and tragedy. They wore this on their left arm and felt domination. They did not feel remorse for the inhumane acts they
committed while hiding behind "their masks." Once the war had completed, many Germans felt disgrace for their actions. The novel Lord of the Flies,
by William Golding was published at about the same time World War Two was occurring. Golding took ideas from the annihilation of the war and
put it into the context of his story. Some of his ideas were inspired from the cruelty of war. William Golding was a British novelist, playwright, and
poet known for his award winning book Lord of the Flies, published in 1954. In Lord of the Flies, most of the boys abandoned the civilized society
they had always lived, and resorted to being savages.
Jack is known as the antagonist throughout the novel. He has made some very questionable decisions and choices, which has allowed

Deception In Paul Laurence Dunbar's They Wear The Mask
Paul Laurence Dunbar's "We Wear the Mask," exposes the deception of a grin and the truth that lies behind it and demonstrates that Gatsby used his
materials and wealth to fit into society. In the poem Dunbar implies that the mask is a facade that conceals the true emotion of someone. Gatsby
masked his true persona and identified himself wearing a mask of wealth and materials. The mask gives power to the powerless but at the same time it
allows people to live within a lie.
The first stanza of the poem suggest that the people wearing these masks owe it all to human deception and lies. Lying is a part of daily life,
especially Gatsby's, and he is obligated to lie and wear a mask to hide his true identity. Once Gatsby put on his mask the life

Theatrical Mask Analysis
When we were presented with the task of creating a theatrical mask, that revealed something about ourselves, for our midterm I had no clue what I
was going to do. Through lots of brainstorming I came up with the idea of having half of my mask be Glinda the Good Witch, from Wicked and
Wizard of Oz, and the other half be Elphaba, or the Wicked Witch of the West, from the same shows. My first reason for choosing this design was the
fact that it reveals my love for the theatre, and musicals particularly. That was something about myself that I felt I could reveal pretty easily through
this design. When I told my friend the idea she said jovially, "Oh so what you're revealing about yourself is that you're a theatre nerd." While those

We Wear The Mask Personification
In the poem We Wear the Mask, author Paul Laurence Dunbar uses figurative language in many instances. Personification, one of the figures of speech
most used by Dunbar, can be seen continuously throughout his poem. For instance, in the first line of the first stanza, Dunbar uses personification
when he writes "We wear the mask that grins and lies" because the mask is portraying human–like qualities. The mask represents how the subjects of
the poem, African Americans, display a physical image that completely differs from what they really feel mentally and emotionally. Despite the misery
and despair that they underwent during the time in which this poem was written, which was in the late 1800's, African Americans demonstrated an
image of nothing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The same number of syllables are used in a grand majority of his lines, which maintain a steady rhythm all throughout the piece – in this case, it's 8
syllables per line. Dunbar, by using a clear tone of both anger and sadness in his poem, makes it notable that he is also an African–American who has
to hide his emotions behind "the mask". Apart from the tone he uses, Dunbar also uses the pronoun "we" which automatically informs the reader that
he's included in the group of people he's writing about. He makes his rage at having to hide his true emotions well known in the beginning of the
poem, as well as his despair at the end of the poem when he states that the world will "dream" while continuing to "wear the mask". In other words, he
says that they will remain hopeful while continuing to hide their sadness behind a fake smile. Dunbar's overall statement in We Wear the Mask is that
these African–Americans, including himself, not once revealed all of the sadness, anger, and agony they went through; they simply smiled and faked
their happiness while they were anguished and hurting inside, probably to avoid provoking conflict with Caucasian groups of people. The purpose of
this title was to inform the reader of the exasperating struggle African–Americans had to endure during this period of time due to race inequality, all in a
total of three stanzas and 15

We Wear The Mask Literary Devices
"We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar uses three major literary elements: metaphor, diction and rhythm, in order to illuminate the importance
of the mask African Americans use. Word choice in this poem starts off as unsettling and sadening using words as, "grins and lies", "hides", "human
guile", "torn and bleeding",as well as, "tears and sighs". These words used in stanza one and two, show what the mask hides but also what that person
is really feeling behind that mask of lies. In order to sustain peace and harmony, sometimes that mask needs to be worn, hiding true emotion. In the last
stanza, the diction is switched to a hopeful and "rise up" type of attitude. "Smile", "tortured souls arise" and "sing", make the reader feel as though

What Does The Mask Symbolize In Fahrenheit 451
When something consumes you such as a society and tells you what you have to be, how do you avoid the mask? The poem "We Wear the Mask"
by Paul Dunbar and the novel "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury both use a mask as a symbol. The mask symbolizes how closed off people are, and
how they hide themselves and their emotions from society. These "masks" are worn to protect yourself from the cruel and treacherous society that has
been created. The new society has taught people how to cover up their true emotions with these fake smiles and shining eyes. This mask holds back all
the sorrow, protects you from being further destroyed by others words or actions, and covers up the real extreme problems people are facing such as
suicide and drug overdose. Both texts use these "masks" metaphorically to show how the people protect themselves. ... Show more content on

Essay On Tribal Masks

  • 1. Essay On Tribal Masks Since the ancient times, tribal masks play a huge role in the traditional ceremonies and dance regalia of Native American tribes. The Northwest Coast Indians are the most prominent native mask–makers who carve intricate ceremonial/dance masks. Believing that the world is led by supernatural beings or spirits, several cultures created masks worn ceremonially to connect and appease with these forces. Two of the prominent Native American masks are the Iroquois False Face masks and the Hopi Kachina masks. False Face Masks of the Iroquois The False Face masks are regarded as "living" and are "fed" with tobacco. They are characterized by distorted features with deep–set eyes accented by metal. They have long white or black hair from the horse's tail. Their noses are crooked and bent. Tobacco is tied onto the hair above the forehead. False Face masks are made primarily from basswood. The man making the mask is guided by the spirit to discover the right wood in the forest for the false face mask. The masks were thought to be inhabited by the spirit of the tree. The spirit stimulates the distinctive elements of the design in which the product represents the spirit itself. As it is carved from a living tree, the mask is removed when completed. The face is painted based on the time of day it was cut as well as the meaning of the mask. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, the mask is regarded as a living representation of a spirit. Whenever the mask is not worn, it is considered as a living ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Should Wearing Wear A Mask? Those who are able to perform their daily routines in such a way that their stigma effectively "disappears" to observers might be considered to have a full–coverage mask that is so lifelike, that they may convince others that the representation of the mask is their physical face. Others might wear a full coverage mask by transmitting with someone using a method that eliminates attributes that might be evident in face–to–face communication or by creating the illusion that a stigmatizing characteristic is actually a temporary circumstance. While one might choose to wear a mask perpetually, it is not ever bound to the skin of the face; there may be various ways and contexts in which it can be removed. Individuals may choose to only wear their masks in places that they deem that they could never be accepted or in front of specific people, while putting less effort into managing their communication in places and in front of those deemed to be safe (Goffman, 1963, p. 81). Often, one with a stigma might make an effort to carefully conceal an attribute in front of strangers, but would remove their mask when they are with those whom they are intimate with (p. 74). However, there is not a strict dichotomy between public as unsafe and private as safe. An individual might need to reveal a stigma to certain members of the public while revealing himself to others in the same space (p. 73). Likewise, he might choose to remove their mask for a particular member of their family, but not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dunbar's Poem 'We War The Mask' Questions for "We Wear the Mask:" The mask that is described in this poem is meant to represent the hiding of the emotions and the identity of an individual. It references the idea that in order for one to survive in the world, one must hide their true personality, feelings, and in the context of this poem, their race. The line, "[...] debt we pay to human guile," is used to imply the feelings of shame and guilt that come with the deceit one commits when they hide themselves. When a person hides behind a mask, they become unable to truly connect with any other human beings, on the grounds that the negativity linked with the mask often prevents proper interaction, in which emotions are key. In Dunbar's original context of the poem, he uses "we," in order to clearly state that the poem is created from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is due to the comparison between the author and dust, but is different from a metaphor due to the use of the word "like." The poetic device used in the line, "You may cut me with your eyes," can be considered to be an example of personification. The line emphasizes the idea that eyes have the power to physically harm someone or something, while in reality they lack this ability. This attaches a specific human trait or characteristic to something that would not have this trait otherwise. After reading Maya Angelou's poem, "Still I Rise," it becomes very clear that Angelou is proud of her race, and finds power from her past, as well as her culture. Throughout the poem, Angelou reiterates the positivity that she associates with being black, and she does so while inciting feelings of great power and inspiration. She will still rise, no matter who, or what, attempts to tear her down. Angelou makes it very clear that she will not be silenced, she will not hide, and most importantly, she will not be ashamed of her race or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this essay I am going to look at the Makishi Masquerades and the Transmission of knowledge among the Chokwe and related people together with the Pwo mask, the Bambara tribe of Mali and the Chi Wara antelope mask, and also at the role that the Holo mask plays in the Ngidi and Makanda initiation rites (African masks history and meaning, S.a.; African art and architecture, 2001). 3. CONTEXT OF CEREMONIAL AFRICAN MASKING AND THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS THEREOF 3.1 The Makishi Masquerades among the Chokwe and related people The Chokwe are famous for art items produced to celebrate and legalize the royal court. The art objects can include elaborately carved stools and chairs used as thrones. Most of the sculptures are portraits, which represent the royal ancestry. Staffs, sceptres, and spears are among other implements sculpted to celebrate the court. Chokwe origin can perhaps be traced to the Mbuti and Pygmies. Between 1600 and 1850 they were under extensive influence from the Lunda states and were centrally located in Angola. In the second half of the 19th century though, substantial improvement of the trade routes between the Chokwe homelands and the Angolan coast led to increased trade of ivory and rubber. Wealth acquired from this allowed the Chokwe kingdom to develop, eventually overtaking the Lunda states that had held sway over them for so long. Their success was short–lived, however, the effects of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Use Of Mask As A Believable And Consistent Character For... With reference to your own process, discuss and analyse how the use of mask affected your approach to creating character. Compare how it differs from working without mask, assessing benefits and any perceived drawbacks. Discuss its potential effect, if any, on your work in non mask theatre. In this essay I will argue that the use of mask is vital in creating a believable and consistent character for performance. The techniques used in masks not only help to define a character but also help an actor improve their improvisation techniques. Jacques Lecoq wanted to "explore the hidden gestures, emotions and underlying states of a character, which we express through mimages" [109: 2002, Bloomsbury] I incorporated both the mimages and his ... I was ultimately surprised by the outcome, my end product was a trickster. The raised eyebrow however led to a smirk which ultimately led to the name Draco; a genus of reptiles, very apt for my character. However, the eviller Draco became the more drastic a counter mask had to be. As our piece was dedicated to stealing a picture of ''Zefron– Zac Efron", when ripped, Draco had to flip suddenly. I drew upon the counter mask exercises we had developed in rehearsals. Changing everything that made Draco who he was. His ever–present sneer faded into a frown and a wail. To achieve Draco's mannerism and voice I charged my mask. Copying the arched eyebrow on the mask I found a nasally voice with an added scoff at the end. I then began to work on my inner dramatic monologue. I wanted to keep in mind that Draco thought himself above everyone else hence a simple inner monologue; "I am surrounded by idiots...peasants, they should be quivering in my mere presence." Getting the temperament of Draco however was difficult. Despite embodying the arlecchino mask I wanted Draco to keep an air of authority, the temperament I chose for Draco was Choleric "This way follow me, follow me this way now!". All the exercises and techniques I used to develop Draco greatly helped me in perfecting his character, from Lecoq's 7 states to chekov's centres. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. We Wear Mask An Analysis of "We Wear the Mask" In a world where pain is mocked, and genuine kindness is ridiculed, members of our society have grown to feel that it is necessary to hide, and create false images to protect our inner selves. Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, "We Wear the Mask", uses strategic iambic tetrameter as well as symbolism to emphasis and display the natural man's tendencies to hide behind metaphorical masks. In his poem, Dunbar uses imagery that allows the reader to visualize the person hiding behind the mask. He discusses what the mask hides, "our cheeks", "our eyes", "our tears and sighs", implying that the mask is a carefully plotted faГ§ade which is meant to shield a truly broken person from the harsh, unforgiving world. • 8. The Use Of N95 Masks Versus Surgical Masks At OHSU's Bone Marrow Transplant unit (BMT) and at the outpatient center for Hematologic Malignancies (CHM) clinic, BMT patients are not fitted for N95 masks, yet they are being asked to wear them. Therefore, the current issue is whether or not the unfitted N95 masks are actually more beneficial than surgical masks for the patients. This is because we are asking them to be worn while not fitting them. I selected this topic because I noticed there were inconsistencies within the practice of each nurse regarding the use of N95 masks versus surgical masks. When I probed deeper, I realized that some of the nurses didn't know OHSU policy and were using best practice from another institution, which stated to use surgical masks when transporting patients off of the unit. This made me wonder why different institutions would have different policies and what the actual best practice is according to evidence. The OHSU Policy #HC–NSG–BMT–205–POL Infection Control Policy for Adult and Pediatric Oncology /Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) Units states that patients shall wear an N–95 mask when outside the HEPA–filtered environment (OHSU, 2016). This is important to me from a leadership role development because as an informal nurse leader, it is my responsibility to own my own practice. In order to do this appropriately, I must fully understand the policy of my place of employment and if that policy is not aligned with current best evidence, it is my responsibility to ... • 9. Masks In Fahrenheit 451 The literary device of the mask in Fahrenheit 451, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Lord of the Flies is recurring in each of the stories. The metaphoric mask is a both physical and symbolic object that alters the characteristics of an individual; usually the protagonist. The protagonist either gradually puts on or takes off the mask to change as a person. The mask itself acts how you would expect a real mask to work. A mask typically obscures the vision so that you can only see in one direction, and some obscure our vision to a blur. Despite that, the mask has a much deeper connotation in literature. The obscurity produced by the mask placed on one is not a true mask, but an event or decision significantly altering the traits of an individual. Such a transition is portrayed in literature as the putting on or removal of an actual mask. This makes easier for readers to understand, and creates a perceptible connection between the symbolism and reality. In the Lord of the Flies and Star Wars:... • 10. Masks In MAUS II By Art Spiegelman Masks are used in society to conceal one's appearance and also as a means for impersonation. When we encounter someone wearing a mask, we assume they are pretending to be whatever that mask depicts. We are aware that there is a person underneath, but we assume that they bear no resemblance to the mask they wear. If they were, then why would they were a mask in the first place? In graphic novel MAUS II, Art Spiegelman tells the story of his father's experiences within the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz (1992). There are many visual themes or motifs present throughout this graphic novel, but one important motif represented are masks. Spiegelman is shown in this graphic novel contemplating if he is worthy or has the right to illustrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these scenes, we again see the mask motif being depicted by Spiegelman. In an earlier scene, Art is shown morphing his character from an adult to a childlike version of himself (42). In society children are symbols of nativity and immaturity. Conversely, adults are symbols of wisdom and growth. By showing this transformation, Spiegelman is showing that he feels less of an adult when compared to his father and less of a Jewish person than those survivors of Auschwitz. Spiegelman has now illustrated art as a child with a mask mouse on. This drawing of Art conveys to the reader that he sees himself not only as inadequate, but also not authentically Jewish as well. As Art speaks to Pavel, he continues to take this form. He also confirms to Pavel his feelings of inadequacy by explaining once again "No matter what I accomplish, it doesn't seem like much compared to surviving Auschwitz" (44). He is still consumed with these feelings of not being Jewish enough. As he converses with Pavel, Art confirms to Pavel that he admires his dad for surviving Auschwitz (45). When Pavel mentions to Art that those who died in the Holocaust cannot tell their story, Art replies by quoting "every word is a stain on silence and nothingness" (45). This interaction implies that Art concurs that speaking on such an event like the Holocaust by those who did not experience it, is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Transformation Masks Of The Kwakwaka The transformation masks of the Kwakwaka'wakw culture were ritual items. Kwakwaka'wakw does not refer to only one tribe but numerous others. Kwakwaka'wakw consists of 17 tribes in their nation in total that originally spoke the language. The kwakwaka 'wakw nation is found in the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. The many different nation of the kwakwaka'wakw is extremely diverse, although there are commonalities. For example many of the groups relate that their ancestors roamed the world transforming themselves into animals. This is also shows how the masks have two face in one as to represent their ancestors. Even though the culture has such an amazing artistic style and rituals the people underwent numerous struggles to hold onto them. The Kwakwaka'wakw bands consist of four clans (killer whale, raven, eagle, and wolf). The clans are divided by numayn (or na' mina) which can be loosely translated as "groups of fellows of the same". Numayns were responsible for safeguarding family crest and for conveying their specific rights. This could have included access to natural resources such as fishing areas and rights to sacred names and dances related to their ancestors or the group's origin. The numayns were ranked and typically were the only ones to fill in a spot at any given time in a group. Each rank entitled them to specific rights as well, such as ceremonial privileges. These ceremonial privileges included the right to wear masks. Animal transformation masks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The techniques I have used in masks not only help define a character but have improved my improvisation skills. Jacques Lecoq wanted to "explore the hidden gestures, emotions and underlying states of a character, which we express through mimages" [2002: P.109]. I incorporated both the mimages and Seven States of Tension tohelp me to determine how my mask; Draco, would react in different situations. Copying the arched eyebrow on the mask I found a smarmy, nasally voice, I enjoyed doing this as it helped me to achieve the temperament of Draco; Choleric. I had to make sure I did not differentiate from his features. As Rudlin states: "You a prisoner of the mask" [1994: P.35], thus meaning I was bound by Draco's expressions. Clocking was essential for Draco as he needed to constantly hold the audience's attention. It also helped to pinpoint key moments; looking at the dirty rag, clock the audience, placing the rag elsewhere. This moment also tied in with the characteristics of the Arlecchino. Toby Wilsher states that countermask is "one of the simplest but most effective tools" [2007: p.30]. As the countermask would help me achieve any emotion despite Draco's features I could flip him from trickster to turmoil. It also affected my centre, taking me from a centre of my chest to my knees centre, bringing Draco to the floor as his ever–present sneer faded into a frown and a wail. All the techniques I used to develop Draco helped me in creating a character. Each exercise helped me to pin point Draco further and explore him in ways that non–mask theatre would not. • 13. Defense Of Masks By Kenneth Gergen What are masks? One usually thinks it is an object the individual puts on and takes off. When given the thought, one makes the comparison that masks are used to describe our personalities. In "In Defense of Masks" by Kenneth Gergen, he describes the conclusions of other psychologists that one needs to live with a "coherent sense of identity"(Gergen, 198). In other words, they have deduced that one should develop a consistent sense of self to which they can always be true to. Gergen's research has led him to believe those assumptions are false. He doubts the idea of a "coherent sense of identity" because individuals will acquire emotional distress. Gergen claims that we cannot have a self to be true to at all time since we have multiple masks. All the mask that one possesses changes their behavior and in turn, adds to their personality. Likewise, our masks change depending on the given social situation. Gregg Henriques' "One Self or Many Selves" givens a claim that: "In sort, change the situation and you change my behavior and thus I enter into a different self–state (para 11). He explains himself being disconnected on an uninteresting topic; otherwise, he is passionate about the conversations. Situations matter because it dictates how one will react based on the given moment. For example, "Parents, friends, lovers, teachers, kin, counselor, acquaintances all behave differently towards us..."(Gergen, 198). In the poem, We Wear The Mask written by Paul Laurence Dunbar, explores the deception of ones true self in order to be accepted within society. Although the poem was published in 1913, shortly after the slavery of African Americans where Dunbar shared his own experiences with his parents being slaves, there is no confirmation of who the poem is reflecting. This is presented as the speaker communicates in first person as well as using the word choice of "we." In the opening lines: "[w]e wear the mask that grins and lies/[i]t hides our cheeks and shades our eyes" (Dunbar 1–2) reflects how on the exterior others appeared to be meek and content but in reality, they were paradigms ... • 15. The Necklace: Figurative Masks Figurative masks varies from one person to the next. For you, it may be pride, however for your neighbor, it could be wealth or tranquility. Since the human population is unimaginably diverse, we all possess distinctive masks, and it can be anything that harbours your true self. The human race uses figurative masks to modify their personas to counteract unjust treatments. I personally use a tough mask as a coping mechanism as this trait or characteristic helps protect and conceal my true self, which ultimately assists me in prevailing unjust treatment that I receive. In the social context of The Necklace, written by Guy de Maupassant, pride and social status are prominent veils that majority of the people wore. She then uses the mask of perseverance to at least receive a tiny piece of pity or reward from both her friends and higher class society, whom she envied quite lots. • 16. Essay On The Mask In Lord Of The Flies Everyone thinks of a mask, as a silly object that makes people laugh, the book Lord of The Flies proves otherwise. To begin with, the English boys were on a plane heading towards safety from the German air raids, until all of a sudden the plane started heading down for an island. As the plane was inching towards the deep jungles of the island, it hit with a sudden strike that scared every living thing in its way. Everyone survived the plane crash except the pilot who probably shot right through his window like a slingshot. An English boy named Ralph and his new friend Piggy were the first of the characters to find each other after the accident. Often Ralph teased him because his name was Piggy and it matched him perfectly. Piggy was fat, stubby, wore glasses, and had asthma. As the boys wandered the island they found a conch shell within thick vines. They managed to get it out, and Ralph blew into it a couple of times. Suddenly, every boy from the plane crash was alarmed and they started to walk over to Ralph. Consequently, the teenage boys and the littluns established order and gave each other specific jobs to accomplish while staying on the island. Ralph was in charge of making shelter with a couple of other boys, while a boy named Jack was in charge of the choir, but later on became in charge of the hunters. The mask in Lord of The Flies begins as a symbol of surviving, becomes violent, and concludes as a symbol of evil. Specifically, in the beginning of the story, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. We Wear The Mask I enjoyed reading "We Wear The Mask". It was fun to analyze and break down the poem. I could relate this poem is many ways. I have felt the need to wear a "mask" in many social settings. One example would be when I first started going to church. My small group leader always made me feel unimportant and unappreciated. I felt that my opinion didn't matter so, I would pretend to be something that I was not to get her attention. I had to act as if I was perfect and made no mistakes. • 18. Masks Depicted In Paul Laurence Dunbar's They Wear The Mask In society, people are constantly worried about "fitting in" and fear being themselves will hinder their ability to conform to society. Many people fear that being themselves will have a detrimental effect on their social life, and others feel that they are outcasts and that they need to be someone they're not in order to be socially accepted. People often try to hide their true personality, and wear a "mask." To metaphorically wear a mask is to express yourself the way you want to be seen, rather than how you actually feel. This instills the idea that one's own personality is not good enough, creating a fear of being yourself, causing people to wear a "mask." People wear these masks in an attempt to navigate in society, to preserve innocence, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of just saying he wants to live with blacks, he wears a mask to make people think he is a drunk. He wears this mask in order to navigate in society and "try to give 'em a reason" (228). Mr. Raymond also tells Scout and Dill that, "It ain't honest but it's mighty helpful to folks. Secretly, Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that's the way I want to live" (228). As an alternative to facing the town's dissenting opinions, he acts like a drunk. This acts as a mask to aid Mr. Raymond in society. Also, Atticus wears a mask in order to preserve the innocence of animals. When the rabid dog is on the street, Atticus shoots the dog in one shot, and Miss Maudie informs Scout and Jem that "Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time" (112). He wears a mask to hide his skill because he wants to preserve the lives of innocent animals. Miss Maudie then speculates that "he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things" (112). • 19. Masks In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding People put on a different mask depending on what "part" they are trying to play. Whether that be with peers, friends, teachers or parents you change because of the surroundings. The disguise changes the perspective and perception of that person. Masks can make you feel untouchable while you wear them, but when you take the mask off you feel regret about the acts committed while wearing your disguise. The power masks hold over people is hard to explain, they can turn the innocent into the barbaric. Masks have been worn throughout history. A good but ambiguous example of hiding behind a mask is the German Nazi Swastika that symbolizes World War Two. The Nazi's Swastika resembles the German's masking of genocide, deception, and tragedy. They wore this on their left arm and felt domination. They did not feel remorse for the inhumane acts they committed while hiding behind "their masks." Once the war had completed, many Germans felt disgrace for their actions. The novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding was published at about the same time World War Two was occurring. Golding took ideas from the annihilation of the war and put it into the context of his story. Some of his ideas were inspired from the cruelty of war. • 20. Lord Of The Flies Mask Analysis Life is a costume party in which some are tricked and others are treated. Imagine a world where one's true self was hidden behind a series of masks, each mask hiding an individual's specific character flaw, personality trait or even a desire to do harm. Against the backdrop of World War II, uniformed soldiers presented themselves to an enemy as a single mass of camouflaged danger. Each similarly dressed and trained to kill or capture an enemy without feeling any remorse. William Golding's own involvement during World War II allowed him to experience wearing his ownmask while tremendous violence was occurring as he was aboard a Royal Navy boat in 1940. Further, his involvement in the battle of Normandy(France) and the epic struggle on its beaches is reflected in his writing in the lives of young boys who similarly try to maintain order on their own island. Therefore in the same way that a soldier's uniform provides anonymity, the characters in William Golding's Novel The Lord of the Flies wore masks to conceal their true identity, shown when Jack who is civilized put on a mask to become a savage, and when Roger took off his civilist mask to reveal his inherently present inner savage. Golding exemplified how decorous Jack was without his face painted and hidden in the ending of chapter one. This was the first time the boys went out and had to figure out how to hunt in order to survive by themselves. Jack along with Ralph and Simon came across a piglet snarled in the ... • 21. Using Symbolic Masks In Ancient Greeks People use masks for more than one reason, but masks are often used to prove a point or to show an emotion. Even in ancient Greece, dramatic masks were used in theater so that people in the top row of an amphitheater could see the emotion on actors' faces. This use of masks was for entertainment, but it also stresses the importance of human emotion and how important it was considered even to the ancient Greeks. Some people, however, don't use an added mask to show human emotion. They use their face, and that face can serve as the only mask necessary to prove a point. A face can be a mask that is used to show people someone's emotion literally, or it can be used as a figurative mask to hide emotion. It is ironic how the literal masks of the ... • 22. Summary: The Influence Of Health Masks Masks are often worn in tribal or religious ceremonies, to conceal a person's identity for the sake of protection, and in costume play. Masks offer people the opportunity to both conform and deviate from the culture within which they find themselves. In the wake of the SARS pandemic of 2003, photos of people in China wearing health masks circulated on nightly news reports. Since that time, wearing health masks, not only in medical settings but also in public settings, is now a common part of Asian culture (Phend). • 25. Masks In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Masks are a covering for parts of the face that are worn for a disguise, pleasure, or to scare people. Greek theatre utilizes masks innumerable times for evident characters in their plays. The actors/actresses who position their masks on, become divergent people. The denotation the boys' have behind the mask is unique from when they have the mask off. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the mask is used as a disguise from their normal society and civilization. Jack, Ralph and Roger prove that this statement is true throughout the novel. Golding once said that civilization is "the mask which enables the individual to hide his primitive nature." This illustrates how one will disguise himself as someone or something that triggers their primal nature. William Golding's purpose in writing this novel is to present to the readers when an individual loses connections with society they can regenerate one's true self to become someone they are not. The masks are utilized by these three characters to shield their nefarious doings. Jack, Ralph and Roger all have measures that delineate the diabolic and shadow within all humanity. To start off, Jack is guiltless at the beginning of the novel, until he turns himself into a new person. The poem talks about the mask that people wear to hide their emotions and personality. It also talks about slavery and African Americans who wear masks to hide their fear, sadness, and pain. In this poem the slaves do not just wear a mask to hide their feelings, they smile and sing to appear perfect to society. During the slavery time slaves did not want to show their feelings because they thought it weakness' them, and that the masters will not buy them if they were weak. Dunbar uses an imagery, and irony to describe how the slaves feel, this technique was very helpful for the readers because it gave the reader a picture of the situation during slavery "With Torn and Bleeding Hearts We Smile" (4). This poem describes how the African Americans had difficult times during the slavery although they kept smiling and pretending to be happy, this poem also talks about the kind of pain they had which was bleeding and torn hearts because they were slaves. The Theme Of Masks In Heather's : The Musical Heather's: The Musical is a play that has multiple themes, but the theme of masks we wear in social realms, is the theme that was most prevalent to me. Personification, one of the figures of speech most used by Dunbar, can be seen continuously throughout his poem. For instance, in the first line of the first stanza, Dunbar uses personification when he writes "We wear the mask that grins and lies" because the mask is portraying human–like qualities. The mask represents how the subjects of the poem, African Americans, display a physical image that completely differs from what they really feel mentally and emotionally. Dunbar, by using a clear tone of both anger and sadness in his poem, makes it notable that he is also an African–American who has to hide his emotions behind "the mask". Apart from the tone he uses, Dunbar also uses the pronoun "we" which automatically informs the reader that he's included in the group of people he's writing about. He makes his rage at having to hide his true emotions well known in the beginning of the poem, as well as his despair at the end of the poem when he states that the world will "dream" while continuing to "wear the mask". In other words, he says that they will remain hopeful while continuing to hide their sadness behind a fake smile. Dunbar's overall statement in We Wear the Mask is that these African–Americans, including himself, not once revealed all of the sadness, anger, and agony they went through; they simply smiled and faked their happiness while they were anguished and hurting inside, probably to avoid provoking conflict with Caucasian groups of people.
