Television Program For Children
Affections of television program to children in each cognitive development stage.
There are so many different television programs out there designed for children, but the reality is
when the word "children" includes kids of the age between births to 12 years old, the affection of
those programs must be different in different stages of cognitive development of children between
births till the age of 12. Therefore, my paper is going to talk about how those affections are different
in each stage of development and why should it be different by using specific examples of television
program designed for children, and the theory of cognitive development from Jean Piage. The
television program I am using is called The Magic School Bus–The ... Show more content on

Frizzle get lost near a haunted house on their way to tomorrow's music concert, it turns out this
haunted house is a sounds museum built by a music professor in 19 century. While they discover the
"ghost", one child in the class found the fact of sounds is vibration; it helped him making his
invented instrument for tomorrow's concert.
In order to understand the affections of this television program on each cognitive stage of children, I
must introduce Jean Paige, a constructivist as well as an interactionist that developed a cognitive
theory on children. He believed that children think and reason differently at different periods in their
lives. He discovered that children are developed by passing through an invariant sequence that
includes four distinct stages. The four stages are: sensorimotor, from birth to the age of 2;
preoperational – 2–7 years old; concrete operational – 7–12 years old; and formal operational – 12
years and up.
Start with sensorimotor stage, which include the children between 0–2 years old. This is the stage of
cognitive development where kids have basic motor skills and learn how to move in the
environment. The mental structures are mostly concerned with the mastery of concrete objects.
Children in this stage of cognitive development would not be able to remember any moral or theme

flashing things on TV. Children in this

Should Television Programs Be Banned?
TV programs broadcasted in Malaysia are mainly imported from the USA and other Western
countries, and the values are different from the values in Malaysian communities. The government
argued that the media had negative influences on the education, attitude, and morality amongst
Malaysian youth. With TV programs such as Baywatch, Friends, and several reality shows being
popular amongst the youth, a lack of Malaysian values are being expressed. Malaysian TV stations
even adopted some of the concepts, creating remakes of some of these programs with Malaysian
actors and civilians, such as Malaysian Idol based off of American Idol. (Halim, 2004) Eventually,
the Malaysian government began taking a stand. They began banning certain films and ... Show

Just like a person, you grow from your experiences and mistakes, and try not to make the same
mistakes. Malaysia pushes not to make the same mistakes, so they came up with a resolution that
will still positively affect their economy, but preserve their culture at the same time. That is the
number one fundamental of growth in any aspect; knowing what to change and what to keep the
same. Malaysia has and continues to master that fundamental.
Malaysia has become extremely successful using the influences of the American culture.
Globalization is one of the major factors to Malaysia's phenomenal economic development and
growth. (Essays, 2013) And some of Malaysia's growth stemmed from American media. The
Malaysian government believes that the media is most effective amongst teenagers and young
adults. This impact was seen significantly in the teenagers and young adults of the community
because they are the main receivers and importers of foreign culture and values from the West.
(Halim, 2004) This age group counts for 7.4 million of the 28.5 million people in Malaysian with
the percentage constantly increasing, so the impact is felt throughout the communities. (Halim,
2004). So to keep Malaysia open to the acceptance of influences from the American culture and the
method of sharing a bidirectional force, we have to tend to the minds of the younger generation.
Using television, film and music, I will display the American culture and make it easy to understand
our values.

Gender Stereotyping in New v. Old Disney Movies
This study set out to examine the differences of gender stereotyping between old and new Disney
movies. As a group, we watched nine movies in total. We watched one together, to test our observer
reliability. Once confirming observer reliability was over eighty percent, we each watched two films
on our own, one "new" Disney movie and one "old" and shared data. While watching, we
specifically looked for actions that illustrated six characteristics that we predetermined were usually

Verbal aggression defined as a behavior that attempts to harm, intimidate, put down or threaten
using language. Commanding defined as giving a direct statement with instructions or orders to
someone else. Finally, rescuing defined as the attempt to get someone else out of unwanted or
dangerous situations, without having to be successful. This is an important study because when
children watch these movies, they are exposed to gender stereotypes that can influence their
understanding of their own or opposite gender through an inaccurate portrayal. By looking at the
attributes mentioned above in Disney films that were released prior to 1972 as opposed to post 1972,
allows scholars the ability to see if gender stereotyping is becoming more or less equal and accurate
as throughout time. In a study done by Huston et al. (1989), it was found that television was the
center of the majority of children's time and attention. This particularly applied to children in low–
income and minority families who did not have the financial resources to provide other activities
and media sources to occupy their children's time. This article stated that television has an impact on
children in three main ways: as an educator, a source for social learning and a way to advertise and
sell products. The article also discussed many of the public

NBCUniversal is "one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies" (Anita Elberse,
2014); and its chief executor office is Stephen Burke. It was fully owned by Comcast and it is
divided by two broadcast networks: NBC Network and Telemundo. According to the exhibit 1, the
highest revenue producing unit in all years analyzed, was the cable networks with $8,446 in 2011,
$8,727 in 2012 and $9,201 in 2013. Also, analyzing the operating costs and expenses we can see
that the highest, also, in all years analyzed was the broadcast television, with $6,340 in 2011, $7,842

Since they have to invest a huge amount of money on those films or television programs that have
the gold priority, they have to carefully choose which film and which television program will have
the gold priority. If they choose the wrong gold priority, they could have a huge loss, not only of
money, but also of credibility. According to Burke, "Most of the time, this is not an imposition on
anybody at all. If you're say, Bonnie Hammer, who leads our cable channels, you have a lot of
autonomy– you can pick your own shows, and hire your own people. But when it comes to some
things, we say 'we do what is best for the company.'" Therefore, another management concept that
we can notice is empowerment that is the expansion of employees' knowledge, tasks, and decision–
making responsibilities since the employees have a lot of autonomy on their work. Also, another
management concept that we can see in Burke's quotation, is the duty of loyalty, where the board
members are expected to put the interest of the company ahead of their own personal and
professional interest. Analyzing the Stephen Burke's leadership style, we can say that Burke is a
transactional leader. As Burke himself says, "(...) it's a lot about casting the right people in the
different roles, giving them the right resources, and rewarding the right behaviors and penalizing the
wrong ones." And, the concept of transactional

American children, on average, spend more time watching television programs than they do
engaging with adults, siblings, or attending school (Feldman, Coats, & Spielman, 1996). This
finding introduces the challenge for big networks to use television to positively guide children's
social learning while they are home from school. Studies have shown that even a brief exposure to
television can produce positive effects on learning during childhood (Rice and Woodsmall, 1998),
and television programming can also positively influence pro–social behaviors and gender–role
concepts (Forge & Phemister, 1987, Mares & Woodward, 2001, O'Bryant & Corder–Bolz, 1978 and

determine how they may need to be adjusted. Although so many children's educational programs
attempt to influence attitudes relating to racial prejudice (Persson & Musher–Eizenman, 2003), the
amount of research that has been conducted to test the effectiveness of these efforts is extremely
minimal. To date, only two known studies have successfully caused children to demonstrate positive
changes in racial attitude as prompted by television programming. The first, Gorn et al. (1976)
found that their Caucasian preschool–aged participants experienced a positive shift in attitudes
towards race after watching Sesame Street. In one condition, participants watched an episode in
which White children played with non–White children, and in another condition only children from
ethnic minority groups played together. Most notably, participants who had watched either episode
claimed they would rather play with the non–White children, whereas the participants in the control
condition, who viewed an episode with only White children, almost unanimously claimed that they
would rather play with White children (Gorn et al., 1976). In the second study that demonstrated
television's ability to influence children's racial attitudes, Houser (1978) found that children aged 5–

Positive And Negative Effects Of The Media
The media industry influences society by providing entertainment, spreading information, and
allowing for communication. The abundance of technology such as cell phones, tablets, computers,
and television has made the world much more connected than ever. Consequently, more and more
Americans are becoming dependent on such devices that make daily tasks easier. Through these
connections, the media is able to implement itself into everyday lives, and although these
advancements improve people's lives, there are aspects that are negative. The media tends to be
enjoyed for the benefits it offers with a disregard for its risks. Unfortunately, the current generation
allows the media to shape their lives without acknowledging the potential harm. ... Show more

These advertisements are present in many of today's viewing programs and as alcohol is shaped into
adolescents lives, the more harmful the media becomes.
Alcohol is only one of the many damaging impacts the media promotes. Commercials, a form of
media, is persistent in providing goods that harm the community that is exposed to it. For example,
when a child or adult is viewing television, they are exposed to commercials that reference food
products at approximately ten times an hour, and these are foods with high amounts of calories
(Rosiek). The way in which the media presents such foods makes adolescents much more vulnerable
to making unhealthy choices. As a consequence, for every extra hour a child spends viewing
television weekly, the risk of them developing obesity is increased by three percent (Rosiek). As
inactivity decreases and the malicious food consumption increases during these television seasons,
the obesity rates take a leap in number as well. Moreover, obesity has its own risks as well, as many
children are faced with obesity, they are also challenged with diabetes, respiratory disorders, cancer,
and cardiovascular diseases (Rosiek). The more media specifically commercials is influenced by
thousands of households with no limitation, the more harmful impact the media will have on newer
generations.
However, some of society views the media through television as a

Television Programs Can Support And Facilitate Language...
For many years, parents have relied on using educational programs to teach and engage their
children with new concepts and materials. Conversely, many children have also used television as an
opportunity for learning and language development. For example, the rise of television programs
like Elmo Street and Teletubbies demonstrates this upward trend of substituting media sources for
teaching and learning. However, despite the increasing support from parents toward television
programs, many researchers have mixed reviews on putting our children into viewing long hours of
what they considered unnecessary learning. Thus in what follows of this paper, I will focus on
explaining how television programs can support and facilitate language development. Moreover, I
will also discuss the mixed literacy support for using television as a learning tool and finally, I will
conduct a study that measures, specifically, the relationship between watching educational TV and
learning novel words. Hopefully, with these measures, I will be able to find supporting evidence that
proves educational TV can be a good predictor for word learning.
Through the years, one continuous point of debate has been whether educational TV can facilitate
and improve word learning in children. Many studies on this debate have found distinct and mixed
research outcomes. For example, one study has been Mabel's Rice Word from Sesame Street, in
which he found mixed supporting evidence that television programs can

Dexter Morgan Killing
Fictional television shows were created to entertain the public. For some television is an escape
from reality were someone's imagination can get the best of them. For others, it's just a fictional
program that has no effect in their lives, or so they think. Watching fictional television can
manipulate the mind into believing that something is good. For example, the TV show Dexter tell
the story of a man who is a killer but the audience wants to see him succeed. Dexter Morgan shows
viewers that murder can sometimes be justified because he only killing those who truly deserved it
which keeps killers off the streets in the society.

Pros And Cons Of Mass Media Essay
''What the mass media offer is not popular art, but entertainment which is intended to be consumed
like food, forgotten, and replaced by a new dish'' – W.H Auden. The quote is trying to convey the
message that the mass media is just to humor people on a daily basis and then we'll forget about it at
the end of the day, just like how we consume food on a daily basis and then replace it with a new
dish. It is crucial to understand that the mass media is something that everyone around the world are
exposed to every single day of our lives. It is something that is being depended on by many, and
have also played a big role in our lives. The mass media keeps people all over the world updated

However, there are also advantages to using the mass media. The exposure to different forms of
mass media cause people to be more aware of whatever that is happening around the whole world.
For example, the newspaper, the internet, the radio and the television are a few forms of mass media
that leads to a very fast spread of information. The information about the latest news, be it
entertainment, major events across the world or even sports can read people within minutes. This is
all thanks to the mass media. People can be aware of any social and political events that are
happening, not only in their own country, but the entire world. People can then plan for the future, if
they know the changes of the economy, any assumptions about the fall or rise of prices of goods or
news about the decline or growth in jobs. Weather forecast reports about harsh weather conditions
can be reported through the mass media. The media is also the fastest way to spread awareness to
people to take safety measures, in the case of any natural or man–made disasters (Manali Oak,

Television Program Unfit For A Young Kid
One of my fondest moments growing up, besides curling up in my mothers' arms as she cuddled me,
was watching reruns of Tom & Jerry. Some parents would question my mother's choice of letting me
watch such a violent cartoon at the tender age of three since it displayed a lot of unforgivingly
violent moments such as: how many chokes and gags Tom performed on Jerry and vice versa. It is a
tough question to answer, as is the question of whether Tom and Jerry was considered "excessively
violent" television program unfit for a young kid. However, in all honesty, it is up to the parents of
the child to regulate what they believe personally to be the best fit for a young child to watch. There
is a huge difference between now and then: parents have much more power on regulating what their
children see on TV with the technology of parental control that started surfacing recently which did
not exist in my time. In this context, many people believed, and probably still do, that the
government should have acted as a surrogate for parents whose only control of the TV was the
power button. Today, parents can filter or tailor TV programs in majority of ways like the V–chip for
example, which allows certain programs blocked off if the parents deem it so or based on ratings.
There is also another avenue like the cable satellite boxes that exist today which offer a vast variety
of screening tools to prevent children from exploring television channels or programs a parent might

Television Programs : American Idol
One of the most influential television programs was American Idol. When it first came out, people
were mesmerized by the new program. Local news outlets that would come on after the show would
discuss the results of the show on–air, people would call in after the show to participate in the voting
process. When it first came out, my family and I were hooked on American Idol. The television
program, American Idol, and its appeal to consumers and advertisers is the relationship that's studied
in Chapter 2 of Henry Jenkins's book, Convergence Culture.
At its core, American Idol claims to be a reality show to showcase lesser known singers. But yet,
almost every aspect of American Idol can be seen as a type of advertising, for example, Coca–Cola
branded the real room, where contestants wait before going onstage, offers soft drink promotions
where the winner can go to the finales, and is often a prominent sponsorship figure at the American
Idol finalists national concert tour. Yet, despite the blant consumerism that is in these shows, viewers
still tune into the program time and the time again. It is this conundrum that Jenkins hopes to figure
out in his analysis.
The rise of convergence culture and next generation technologies like the VCR gave rise to an
American public that was fed up with ads and "harder to impress." Jenkins defines the term
"impress" from two different perspectives. In the eyes of the consumer, "impress" is used as a verb.

TV MYTHS Essay
TELEVISION AS A MEDIUM FOR MODERN DAY MYTHS
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s television programming developed rapidly into more than an
assortment of fact and fiction narratives; it became itself a social text for an increasing population,
"functioning as a kind of code through which people gleaned a large portion of their information,
intellectual stimulation, and distraction" (Danesi, 240). Since its inception in the mid–1930s, many
of television's programs have become the history of many cultures. French semiotician Roland
Barthes (1915–1980) claimed that "television shows are often based around a mythologie, in

The television programs of the 1950s and 1960s sugar–coated the typical family and built up the
mythology of a patriarchal family. However, this mythology was challenged by the uprising of
strong, independent, working women. For example, the Fresh Prince of Bel–Air (1990) depicted a
clean–cut and wealthy family that was black, with a mother that was a professor at a university. The
Cohen family in The O.C. (2003) drama television series represent a wealthy, white family, with a
working mother who is the major 'bread–winner' of the family. These shows and many others
portrayed strong, independent women who were attempting to survive, socially and professionally,
in a world that was deconstructing patriarchal structures (Danesi, 230). Strong–willed women are
not the only force that is disassembling these traditions. The dysfunctional family is now also taking
into effect. The show Desperate Housewives (2004) demonstrates the increasing number of families
in this period that are separating and losing the traditional value of 'family'. This show contains
cheating spouses, and generally wives who are desperately vying for attention and love. In this day
and age, sitcoms and dramas deal with controversial yet honest groundbreaking discussions of
current social issues.

The specific objective of this study is to establish the relationship between attention and child

different types of television on the cognitive attention of children.
Children's education and development are important topics, and parents always want to educate their

however, most parents are not so confused about how to select television shows for their children.

Usually, there are two kinds of children television shows, live action shows and cartoons. There has
emerged research, which argued that viewing television cartoons could have immediate negative
effects on young children's cognitive function including self–regulation and working memory
(Lillard and Peterson, 2011). Therefore, watching cartoons is not a good idea to entertain children.
There is increased concern that increased exposure to television has a negative impact on the
cognitive development of a child. It has been linked to late language development and the
development of attention disorders (Landhuis, Poulton, Welch & Hancox, 2007). A majority of
studies conducted on the impact of television have not compared different types of content.
According to the CDC, the number of children getting ADHD is rising rapidly (CDC, 2015).
Correspondingly, research has indicated that there is an increasing number of children watching
cartoons such as "SpongeBob", "Bob's burgers" and "The Simpsons." Most of the parents are
extremely worried about the impact of the content that their children watch on television because of
warning from research findings. They are also worried about the children live action shows such as

stop the breeding of these negative behaviors.
The Media of today is so open to violence that it's almost impossible to avoid. Through movies,
Violence is another issue that needs to be censored in the media. It is exposed through music's, with
lyrics that refer to violent mental pictures of rape, sex, and money. In Movies, violence is shown

Women in magazines are usually tall, extremely thin, and their faces are covered in makeup. Women
can easily develop insecurities in the way they look and feel about themselves because of
magazines. Women choose to read certain magazines according to their interests. However, their
interests are usually congruent with those of the majority of women or they wouldn't be reading that
particular magazine and those magazines wouldn't stay in business. On the flip side of the sex factor,
influences from magazines such as "For Him" magazine and "Maxim" weigh heavily on many men's
self security. These magazines teach men not only how they should look but also how they should
view things. An example of this is a macho, semi sexist, tough guy, bull headed, over confident

The public depends on the news media for its understanding of crime. Reportedly three quarters

depicted as the perpetrators of crime. This new genre commonly referred to as reality television
appears to be sweeping the nation by storm. Opinions vary, depending on whom you ask, to what
extent reality plays a role versus the selling of a product. Sensationalism, advertising, ratings hype,

The apprehension and subsequent arrest all dramatized for the cameras. The suspect, heard on
camera being questioned about his past domestic violence charges, his inability to pay child support
and finally he is asked about the observed drug purchase.
Of the nineteen cases reviewed, drug related crimes were more prevalent. In cases involving African
American suspects, the drug of choice was crack cocaine. In suspects that were Caucasian, the drug
of choice was methamphetamines. On the episode aired on May 5, 2005, COPS: Bad Girls, the
suspect, a Caucasian woman was selling drugs and prostituting (Langley, 2005). With the cameras
rolling, the audience is able to overhear, that the suspect is on welfare and has had her children taken
away because of her drug habit. The suspect denies the charges, and the officer insists on making the
point that she is using her welfare money in order to purchase drugs.
In the cases reviewed, the program did not divulge the age. Upon observation, the average estimated
age is twenty–five. Age did not appear to have any particular correlation to the type of criminal
activity. What appeared to be more in play was the socioeconomic scale of the suspects. The average
age and circumstances seem to strike a familiar vein with the cases reviewed. On average, the
suspects were unemployed, residing with a family member, a history of violence and drug use. This

Disney Princesses : An Overt Sense Of Self Esteem
Fred Rogers and the Disney princesses have a unique similarity in that they both employ an overt
sense of self–esteem in children, which negatively impacts that child's future. Mr. Rogers, through
his television show, has made kids believe that they are special for just being who they are. A similar
idea is also true regarding Disney princesses, in that the little girls who emulate them believe that
life should be lived as a fairy tale. As children grow up, they are very easily influenced by what their
surroundings, particularly by what they see and hear. With Mr. Rogers being the main character on
an educational children's TV program and the "princess" message being promoted everywhere you
look, it is very simple for children to latch onto these people/characters. All of these individuals
seem to allow the child to believe that they are at the center of the world. This may be nothing to
yearn over if it is seen in a young child, but as the child grows up there are various factors that may
be worrisome. Self–esteem, empowerment, and entitlement are three ideals that could be influenced
negatively as the child develops into a young adult. Once again, on the surface it may seem that Mr.
Rogers and the Disney princesses are very positive role models for the youth of our country, but it is
evident that there are aspects of their teaching/culture that are not all that good for an easily
influenced, developing child. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood was an educational

Reality Television Program
When people turn on their televisions at home or they are watching television somewhere else, they
will possibly find a reality show somewhere. Reality television shows have been on television for
numerous years and are changing. Although reality television is wildly entertaining and popular,
many young teens and adults look up to their favorite reality show actors and their lavish lifestyles
and overdramatic antics. People who watch reality television regularly have different expectations

Reality television only shows what viewers want to see and is dishonest and distorts the truth about
reality. After years celebrity Kate Gosselin has been attacked for everything she did and does.
People magazine says "When the show melted down along with the Gosselin marriage after Jon was
caught partying with other women, the twins – 10 years old at the time – were old enough to grasp
that their world had been shattered" (Coyne 58). This statement shows that reality television brings
fighting and divorce to families in reality television. Reality television shows unreal situations and
make people start to fight and change. "A study found that people who watched reality television of
the surveillance docu–drama variety (as opposed to competition shows) were more likely to believe
that relationship drama is normal and to overestimate the amount of bad behavior – such as
gossiping – that women engage in" (O'mara 2).When reality television shows problems, those
problems start to happen in our society because people see it on television and want to be like reality

The Value Of Information Structure

One Side" is study showing the probability of two –players in a zero–sum game, which, one lack
information, and the other side is well informed about the information in hand. However, it is within
each player hand to identify what their choices are, and chose a direction that they would like to take
action. Next, it is recommend that the player understand the value of the corresponding zero–sum

Essay about Consumer Appeal
Consumer Appeal
Advertisers of today have strategically combined commercials and television shows in order to sell
products. Gloria Steinem discusses a similar idea in her article, "Sex, Lies, and
Advertising." She repeatedly demonstrates how advertisements, particularly in magazines, are
complementary to the articles around them. In the same manner, so are commercials to television
programs.
They are both aimed at the same groups or types of people, such as sex, age, gender, etc.
Many times, the time of day or day of the week a show is aired has a lot to do with the types of
viewers the program will attract. Thus, the types of commercials will also differ. On ... Show more

This leaves a majority of the older crowds watching the program.
According to Gloria Steinem, the target of the television show will be the same as that of the
commercials. This proved to be true with "Profiler" and its commercials. There were a
total of twenty commercials aired. They included and Allstate Insurance ad, a number of car dealers
and promotions, chewing gum, beauty products, medicine, food, and television satellites. Most of
them had female voice–overs with predominantly white actors and/or actresses. The actors and/or
actresses were also good–looking, thin, and of high– to medium–status.
In Steinem's terms, and as mentioned by Cayo Gamber, an advertisement is generally linked to the
article, or in this case, the program. The show is seen as a "complementary copy" for the
commercials; because it included certain accessories to a person in the same life–style as the
characters in the program.
The cars advertisements, in particular, were at times found in the show.
However, the other products weren't really enforced by the program. Above all, the program did
help maintain the intended target interested and tuned in to that specific channel.

Censorship
Without the history of Censorship, what type of things would children be watching? Without the
unique methods of Censorship, what kinds of films would be being released into the public?
Throughout this essay I will be explaining the steps taken to achieve the level of Censorship, that we
have now.
In 1900–1950 every movie in the world was rated before being released. The government, of the
country in which the movie was made always did this. In 1956 the rules were changed. Each movie's
script was now required to go before a Film Board, before being produced. If approved the company
was allowed to go on with production. In 1968 the Film Board of the Motion Picture Association of
America adopted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4. X–No one under 17 is admitted.
Throughout History Production companies have been influenced by Religious, Ethnic, Racial and
political groups, who have lobbied against content they deem controversial.
In 1953 a producer named Otto Preminger, made a movie called "The Moon is Blue". This movie
caused the collapse of the Production Code from previous years. The movie caused such controversy
because of one line in it " a professional virgin". Because in 1953 the scripts of movies were read
before they were produced, and the organization CARA was not yet established, Otto Preminger was
not given a seal of approval. Before he was denied a seal of approval, we were given the opportunity
to cut the line out of the movie and go on. So he agreed to cut it out, but the rest of the movie had
quotes in it that implied similar things to that. This is what started the slow loss of power for the
Production Code. The Code was renewed in 1956, 1961 and then in 1968 the new approach of the
organization CARA was reached.
As of 1990, the Motion Picture Association of America has a newer system of rating movies. It is
quite similar to that of 1968.
There are now five categories:
1. G– general audiences
2. PG– parental guidance advised.
3. PG–13: parental guidance advised for anyone under 13 years of age.
4. A parent or guardian must accompany r–anyone under 17.

Gender Roles Are The Way People Act
Gender in "Baby Daddy" TV show, Essay
"Gender roles are the way people act, what they do and say, to express being a girl or a boy, a
woman or a man. These characteristics are shaped by society," (Gender Roles) These roles constitute
the standards of the society and they are transmitted from one generation to another by education.
Children learn these standards since their birth. Parents teach them how to act, to say and to behave
according to their sex. Also, children learn the gender roles from other sources like school,
neighborhood and television. Actually, television is playing a significant role in the education of
people. From different programs presented on television, children acquire many knowledge about
how to live, to speak and to behave according to the roles attribute to men and women. In the USA,
"Baby Daddy" television show is one of the program which teaches people about the gender roles.
"Baby Daddy" show spreads the gender roles by three different ways, first by the way the personal
characters of men and women are described, secondly, by the attitude of men and women toward the
Domestic behaviors, finally, by the way professional occupation of men and women are presented.

How Television Programs Can Support And Facilitate Word...
Introduction
For many years, parents have relied on using educational programs to teach and engage their
children with new concepts and materials. Conversely, many children have also used television as an
opportunity for learning and language development. For example, the rise of television programs
like Elmo Street and Teletubbies demonstrates this upward trend of substituting media sources for
teaching and learning. However, despite the increasing support from parents toward television
programs, many researchers have mixed reviews on putting our children into viewing long hours of
what they considered unnecessary learning. Thus in what follows of this paper, I will focus on
explaining how television programs can support and facilitate word development. Moreover, I will
also discuss the mixed literacy support for using television as a learning tool and finally, I will
conduct a study that measures, specifically, the relationship between watching educational TV and
learning novel words. Hopefully, with these measures, I will be able to find supporting evidence that
proves educational TV can be a good predictor for word learning.
Throughout the years, one continuous point of debate has been whether educational TV can
facilitate and improve word learning in children. Many studies on this debate have found distinct
and mixed research outcomes. For example, one study has been Mabel's Rice Word from Sesame
Street, in which he found mixed supporting evidence that television

The youth justice system was defined by the 1962 Family Court Act that was invented to deal with
kids from the 1950's who only stole from the market or carried B.B. guns. It is powerless to the
teens of today who commit random killings, robberies, and rapes. Research has also shown that kids
who grow up in poverty or lower income levels are more likely to exhibit violent behavior. As more
and more children are being raised in poor families, they suffer from the instability caused by their
parents' lack of money. Janelle Rohr quotes a journalist for The Washington Spectator when she
concludes that teenagers' violent behavior is an expression of frustration and an effort to take some
of the wealth they are denied (14). This could mean robbing, raping, or even killing. It is mainly
inner cities where these crimes occur. Rohr states that "Homicides take the lives of more children in
the District of Columbia than any other type of injury, including car accidents, house fires, or
drownings" (171). The attention that the teens get from committing crimes may be the only type of
attention they ever get, and this may be the reason that many young people turn to the life of a
criminal.

In this article, Pasek also determines that children under three years of age in no way benefit from
television; even if it is "Baby Einstein," (Kramer n.pag). Studies have also been conducted trying to
determine whether or not watching television to great amounts is affecting the eating habits and
psyche of young children. A study published by US Journal Pediatrics found that more
psychological difficulties dealing with peers, emotional issues, and hyperactivity are likely to
develop with children who spend numerous hours daily in front of television or playing video games
(Yahoo! News n.pag). Researchers studied 1,013 children ages 10 to 11 and had them complete a
25–point questionnaire, a self–report about daily hours watching television or playing games, and
measured their physical activity using an accelerometer in which the kids wore around their waist
for seven days (Yahoo! News n.pag). It was concluded that children spending two or more hours a

difficulties than kids who did not spend a lot of time in front of a screen," (Yahoo! News n.pag).
Even if children are physically active but still spend multiple hours watching television or playing
video games, they are still at risk for psychological difficulties. Researchers stress the importance of

data prove that violent programs on television lead to aggressive behavior by children and teenagers
who watch those programs. Television violence affects young people of all ages, all socio–economic

Today's children view vast amounts of violence on television. A steady diet of death, killings,

This association has been easy to support and is substantiated in every major scientific report
released in the last twenty years. It has become general knowledge to professional counselors and
educators that excessive and unsupervised exposure to television violence increases the use of
violence to resolve conflict, while it desensitizes these youth to acts of violence. This exposure to
violence in the media makes viewers less critical of real life violence. Since the media often
represents violence as "happy violence" devoid of pain, suffering, and consequences, they are not
providing the audience with an accurate or realistic portrayal of violence. Many studies have also
confirmed a cumulative effect of exposure to violence as researchers have traced patterns from
childhood exposure to adult social behavior.
The National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence was in charge of investigating
these issues and making recommendations to the President. The media's task force report was titled,
"Violence and the Media." Conclusions drawn from this report show that real violence was caused
in part by the desire of action groups for media attention; and that violence in society could be

Effects Of Children 's Television On Language Development...
Nelson and Co. reported that children between the ages of two and five watched television on
average 32 hours a week – an eight year high. Parents' opinions on their children's television
viewing has contributed to this upward trend. In 2014, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center surveyed 1,557
parents of children between the ages of 2 and 10; they found that 44% of parents believed that
children's television enhanced learning. In addition, the center reported that 78% of parents of
children between the ages of two and five believed that educational television improved their
children's language and cognitive development. The burgeoning years of language development are
not only capricious and vulnerable in nature, but they are also easily influenced by external factors.
Therefore, it is imperative to evaluate the effects of children's television on language development.
Children's television negatively impacts language development because it impedes word acquisition,
delays language acquisition and negatively affects literacy outcomes. Educational television
negatively impacts language development because it hampers vocabulary acquisition. Vocabulary
acquisition is characterized by an infant's first words and word spurt (i.e., the rapid growth in a
child's vocabulary). Zimmerman, Christakis and Meltzoff (2007) investigated the relationship
between media exposure and language development in children under two years of age. 1,008

It is no secret that so many children in the United States watch too much television. Corporations are
cashing in on this lucrative opportunity because television is the "primary medium used to advertise
to children" (Desrochers & Holt, 2007, p. 198). Watching television means also watching
advertisements and commercials. With children being such an easy group to make impressions on, it
is no wonder that advertising geared towards children costs companies billions of dollars each year.
Granted these advertisements are not limited to television, it still shows how lucrative advertising
towards children can be. Children are such a captive audience that they will believe what they want

If this proved to be true, children would be much less likely to request certain food products that are
not good for their health. The study suggests that the effects of advertisements can be reduced if an
adult who is also watching the advertisements properly mediates the children. It also investigates
three effects of advertising including children's liking, desires, and intended requests for products
advertised. The conclusion was that the factual mediation by adults was not effective and only made
the children like the products advertised less than they did before. Although the children could
understand and learn from the factual comments, they could not apply their cognitive defenses and
understand the commercial at the same time. According to Fosu, Warren, Wicks, and Wicks (2009),
disclaimer plugs such as "part of this nutritious breakfast" could educate children about nutrition and
decrease childhood obesity. Desrochers and Holt (2007) claimed that the authors of a study

because of young children's limited comprehension of the nature and purpose of television
advertising, and therefore warrants governmental action" (p. 184). Advertising to children can be

Internet Protocol Is The Process Of Transmitting And...
Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the process of transmitting and broadcasting television
programs through the Internet using Internet Protocol (IP). A broadband connection is used as the
medium of transmission for IPTV. Along consumers to tune in to their favorite programming when,
where, and how they want. Improving the user experience compared to a traditional television
transmission such as radio frequency broadcast, satellite broadcast and/or cable television.
When downloading a file from the Internet, the file doesn't travel in one big piece, as might be
expected. Instead, it 's broken up into small pieces, known as packets sent to specific IP address, a
numeric address given to every computer on the Internet (194.66.82.11). Therefore every computer
has a unique identifying number known as an IP address much like houses and street address. The
Internet can be used for many things: sending emails, downloading files, making telephone calls
VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol), and now watching TV using IPTV.

The Issue Of Substance Abuse Essay
It is well known that any form of substance use can be fatal, but so can a lot of other things:
choking, accidents, health issues, and sheer bad luck. However, there is something special about
substance abuse – fatalities from substance use are considered preventable. Take deaths associated
with driving under the influence of alcohol, lung cancer brought on by smoking, or heart attacks
associated with cocaine use. A person could die in a car crash, from lung cancer, or a heart attack
without ever touching alcohol, cigarettes, or cocaine respectively. However, there is an increase in
death associated with these items. The most curious part of this is the legal versus illegal
categorization of substances. According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco is considered the
leading cause of preventable death (CDC, 2016). Yet, not only is it legal, a person in the U.S. can
purchase cigarettes as young as 18, which is three years earlier than the legal age to drink alcohol.
This knowledge leads to questions about addiction and prevalence of substance use. Besides being
readily available and highly addictive, are there other factors in the use and abuse of legal
substances and are they good indicators of illicit drug use? There is clear evidence to support that
children, adolescents, and adults learn and emulate what they see on television. The American
Academy of Pediatrics has done research and come to the conclusion that "the causes of adolescent
substance use are

Racial Stereotypes
According to NYDailyNews, the average American watches more than five hours of television
every day. Through these television programs, people are exposed to many issues in the
representation of women, children, gender, sexuality, and race. Racial stereotypes are still evident
today, even though times have changed since the early 1900s. They provide negative or false
assumptions about a variety of groups, as well as ideas that do not necessarily pertain to every
person. Fox Tv's show Glee is an accurate portrayal of the many racial stereotypes that are apparent
in today's society. Glee offers viewers a complex construction of race that both perpetuates negative
racial stereotypes for humorous purposes and attempts to disrupt stereotypical notions of "token"
characters. The exposure of race/ethnic groups can be seen throughout various media contexts,
however television offers recurring characters that viewers can identify and continue to form
meaningful bonds with. This involvement stimulates social learning, facilitates persuasion, and can
promote social stereotypes (Tukachinsky, Mastro, & Yarchi, 2017). Television can be used for valid
and significant comparisons over time. For example, Blacks and Latinos in particular have been
portrayed on television and has been a source of controversy and criticism. It is true that

they should be receiving (Tukachinsky, Mastro, Yarchi,

The Reality Of British Television Programs
When thinking of British television programs, it is impossible for one not to think of the
international hit, Doctor Who. Originally debuting in 1963 under the British Broadcasting
Corporation, Doctor Who included an upperclass white male playing the lead character along side
another white male and two white females. Doctor Who aired during the 1960's when Great Britain
was still recovering from the destruction of World War II and was also facing the reality that they
were not the world power they once were. Also, large influx of immigrations were entering Great
Britain during this period. Class, gender, and racial prejudices were extremely prevalent within
society and Doctor Who was no exception. Yet eventually attitudes change and the producers of the
show understood that to remain relevant within popular culture, they would also need to change.
Even though, Doctor Who has made strives over the past five decades to create a more inclusive
television program, they still lack in accurate representation of society. During the 1960's, Great
Britain was coming to terms with the decline of their once massive empire as well as overall lose of
world power. The United States of America and the Soviet Union were now the dominating powers,
leaving Great Britain frustrated. That is where media stepped in the help counteract this fact. British

A particular focus of the study was the media's portrayal of violence and the public's personal
experiences. Television is the primary source of media for most American citizens, and therefore
television violence is the primary source for viewing violence in both adults and children. This
report gave evidence of the media's ability to socialize the viewers to the norms and values of the
culture. Previously the ability of television to do so had been disputed that the media was seen only
as a re–enforcer and not a creator.
Research performed by Albert Bandura concluded there were strong short–term effects of exposure
to violence in the media that affects children. In his studies, children watched models perform
aggressive acts against a doll. These acts of aggression were presented under three circumstances: 1.
the children saw the model rewarded for aggressive behavior, 2. the children saw the model receive
no consequences for their aggressive behavior, and 3. the children saw the model punished. All three
groups were able to imitate the aggressive behavior that contradicts early notions that the influences

Research Paper On Peaky Blinders
In the last five years there has been an enormous shift in the way television is consumed, largely due
to the growing availability of content online. The internet has brought the power of what, when and
where a program is consumed into the hands of the viewer (Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). This has
caused a surge in both the amount, and the frequency of television consumed, leading to a growth of
a viewing practice known as 'binge–watching' (Matrix, 2014; Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). Streaming
services, such as Netflix, have helped to facilitate this change in consumption practices (Pittman &
Sheehan, 2015). Netflix is an online streaming platform with a large variety of television programs
and movies, which are made available to subscribers for a small monthly fee. Some of the content is
exclusive to the streaming site, and others have originated elsewhere but are now available through
the streaming service. Peaky Blinders is a show that falls into the latter category, having originally
aired on BBC Two in the United Kingdom. The first three seasons of Peaky Blinders have recently
been made available on Netflix. As shown in my media journal, this was how I consumed this
program. While Peaky Blinders was not originally distributed as a program to binge–watch, it does
meet several of the criteria which makes it a program ideal for this type of consumption. Peaky
Blinders is a British crime drama about a Birmingham gang of the same name, set just after the First

a direct result of society's desire to worry about everyone's feelings. In the past, viewers passionately
desired accurate information and statistics on the nation's current events. As of now, a different
generation of viewers and new's providers bestow the supply and demand of news stories based on
emotions, rather than fact. With extremist groups becoming increasingly popular the demand for
highly biased news is snowballing. New's corporations like FOX capitalize on this by providing
news that is consistently biased to one point of view. Having a one–sided production such as FOX
creates a type of animosity between them and their competition. This seems rather childish, making
these top tier new companies look like a joke. In result, a viewer will struggle to find a new's
broadcast that provides more than a couple of relevant stories based on factual information. Instead,
the bulk of content is displayed in a look at me, feel bad for me, or look at them format. From this,
the broadcasters work at the heart–strings of their viewers. They get the viewer to invest emotion
into a story, creating a reaction and desire to hear, see, and feel more. Given the response,
broadcasters see interest in emotionally based stories skyrocket and interest in factually based
stories

The Reality Of Television Programs
Today's television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over
fifty years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist
of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As
the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means
in today's world. Because of today's TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should
look like.
Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their
own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and
being parents. The hit comedy "Modern Family" has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and
Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the
two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way
possible. As Greg Graffin wrote in his article "Anarchy in the Tenth Grade" "It is also a shining
example of how easy it is to follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality–which only
motivates me to keep fighting for originality." (3) This is seen on the show "The Fosters", a girl
named Callie is placed in a foster home with a lesbian couple and their other adopted children. On
this show the couple showed more love and support than the previous foster homes she was placed
in, that consisted of the usual

Television Program For Children.pdfTelevision Program For Children

  • 1. Television Program For Children Affections of television program to children in each cognitive development stage. There are so many different television programs out there designed for children, but the reality is when the word "children" includes kids of the age between births to 12 years old, the affection of those programs must be different in different stages of cognitive development of children between births till the age of 12. Therefore, my paper is going to talk about how those affections are different in each stage of development and why should it be different by using specific examples of television program designed for children, and the theory of cognitive development from Jean Piage. The television program I am using is called The Magic School Bus–The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frizzle get lost near a haunted house on their way to tomorrow's music concert, it turns out this haunted house is a sounds museum built by a music professor in 19 century. While they discover the "ghost", one child in the class found the fact of sounds is vibration; it helped him making his invented instrument for tomorrow's concert. In order to understand the affections of this television program on each cognitive stage of children, I must introduce Jean Paige, a constructivist as well as an interactionist that developed a cognitive theory on children. He believed that children think and reason differently at different periods in their lives. He discovered that children are developed by passing through an invariant sequence that includes four distinct stages. The four stages are: sensorimotor, from birth to the age of 2; preoperational – 2–7 years old; concrete operational – 7–12 years old; and formal operational – 12 years and up. Start with sensorimotor stage, which include the children between 0–2 years old. This is the stage of cognitive development where kids have basic motor skills and learn how to move in the environment. The mental structures are mostly concerned with the mastery of concrete objects. Children in this stage of cognitive development would not be able to remember any moral or theme relates to The Magic School Bus–The Haunted House. • 5. Should Television Programs Be Banned? TV programs broadcasted in Malaysia are mainly imported from the USA and other Western countries, and the values are different from the values in Malaysian communities. The government argued that the media had negative influences on the education, attitude, and morality amongst Malaysian youth. With TV programs such as Baywatch, Friends, and several reality shows being popular amongst the youth, a lack of Malaysian values are being expressed. Malaysian TV stations even adopted some of the concepts, creating remakes of some of these programs with Malaysian actors and civilians, such as Malaysian Idol based off of American Idol. (Halim, 2004) Eventually, the Malaysian government began taking a stand. They began banning certain films and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just like a person, you grow from your experiences and mistakes, and try not to make the same mistakes. Malaysia pushes not to make the same mistakes, so they came up with a resolution that will still positively affect their economy, but preserve their culture at the same time. That is the number one fundamental of growth in any aspect; knowing what to change and what to keep the same. Malaysia has and continues to master that fundamental. Malaysia has become extremely successful using the influences of the American culture. Globalization is one of the major factors to Malaysia's phenomenal economic development and growth. (Essays, 2013) And some of Malaysia's growth stemmed from American media. The Malaysian government believes that the media is most effective amongst teenagers and young adults. This impact was seen significantly in the teenagers and young adults of the community because they are the main receivers and importers of foreign culture and values from the West. (Halim, 2004) This age group counts for 7.4 million of the 28.5 million people in Malaysian with the percentage constantly increasing, so the impact is felt throughout the communities. (Halim, 2004). So to keep Malaysia open to the acceptance of influences from the American culture and the method of sharing a bidirectional force, we have to tend to the minds of the younger generation. Using television, film and music, I will display the American culture and make it easy to understand our values. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Old Disney Movies Maggie Box Union College I affirm that I carried out this lab with full academic honesty. Gender Stereotyping in New v. Old Disney Movies This study set out to examine the differences of gender stereotyping between old and new Disney movies. As a group, we watched nine movies in total. We watched one together, to test our observer reliability. Once confirming observer reliability was over eighty percent, we each watched two films on our own, one "new" Disney movie and one "old" and shared data. While watching, we specifically looked for actions that illustrated six characteristics that we predetermined were usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Verbal aggression defined as a behavior that attempts to harm, intimidate, put down or threaten using language. Commanding defined as giving a direct statement with instructions or orders to someone else. Finally, rescuing defined as the attempt to get someone else out of unwanted or dangerous situations, without having to be successful. This is an important study because when children watch these movies, they are exposed to gender stereotypes that can influence their understanding of their own or opposite gender through an inaccurate portrayal. By looking at the attributes mentioned above in Disney films that were released prior to 1972 as opposed to post 1972, allows scholars the ability to see if gender stereotyping is becoming more or less equal and accurate as throughout time. In a study done by Huston et al. (1989), it was found that television was the center of the majority of children's time and attention. This particularly applied to children in low– income and minority families who did not have the financial resources to provide other activities and media sources to occupy their children's time. This article stated that television has an impact on children in three main ways: as an educator, a source for social learning and a way to advertise and sell products. It was fully owned by Comcast and it is divided by two broadcast networks: NBC Network and Telemundo. According to the exhibit 1, the highest revenue producing unit in all years analyzed, was the cable networks with $8,446 in 2011, $8,727 in 2012 and $9,201 in 2013. Also, analyzing the operating costs and expenses we can see that the highest, also, in all years analyzed was the broadcast television, with $6,340 in 2011, $7,842 in 2012 and $6,775 in 2013. Since they have to invest a huge amount of money on those films or television programs that have the gold priority, they have to carefully choose which film and which television program will have the gold priority. If they choose the wrong gold priority, they could have a huge loss, not only of money, but also of credibility. According to Burke, "Most of the time, this is not an imposition on anybody at all. If you're say, Bonnie Hammer, who leads our cable channels, you have a lot of autonomy– you can pick your own shows, and hire your own people. But when it comes to some things, we say 'we do what is best for the company.'" Therefore, another management concept that we can notice is empowerment that is the expansion of employees' knowledge, tasks, and decision– making responsibilities since the employees have a lot of autonomy on their work. Also, another management concept that we can see in Burke's quotation, is the duty of loyalty, where the board members are expected to put the interest of the company ahead of their own personal and professional interest. Analyzing the Stephen Burke's leadership style, we can say that Burke is a transactional leader. As Burke himself says, "(...) it's a lot about casting the right people in the different roles, giving them the right resources, and rewarding the right behaviors and penalizing the wrong ones." American children, on average, spend more time watching television programs than they do engaging with adults, siblings, or attending school (Feldman, Coats, & Spielman, 1996). This finding introduces the challenge for big networks to use television to positively guide children's social learning while they are home from school. Studies have shown that even a brief exposure to television can produce positive effects on learning during childhood (Rice and Woodsmall, 1998), and television programming can also positively influence pro–social behaviors and gender–role concepts (Forge & Phemister, 1987, Mares & Woodward, 2001, O'Bryant & Corder–Bolz, 1978 and Signorelli, 2001). Furthermore, many of the existing educational programs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of the current study is to explore the reasoning behind failed criteria, and to better determine how they may need to be adjusted. Although so many children's educational programs attempt to influence attitudes relating to racial prejudice (Persson & Musher–Eizenman, 2003), the amount of research that has been conducted to test the effectiveness of these efforts is extremely minimal. To date, only two known studies have successfully caused children to demonstrate positive changes in racial attitude as prompted by television programming. The first, Gorn et al. (1976) found that their Caucasian preschool–aged participants experienced a positive shift in attitudes towards race after watching Sesame Street. In one condition, participants watched an episode in which White children played with non–White children, and in another condition only children from ethnic minority groups played together. Most notably, participants who had watched either episode claimed they would rather play with the non–White children, whereas the participants in the control condition, who viewed an episode with only White children, almost unanimously claimed that they would rather play with White children (Gorn et al., 1976). In the second study that demonstrated television's ability to influence children's racial attitudes, Houser (1978) found that children aged 5– 9 who viewed anti–prejudice mini episodes (10–15 minutes) recorded less prejudiced responses on ... • 21. Positive And Negative Effects Of The Media The media industry influences society by providing entertainment, spreading information, and allowing for communication. The abundance of technology such as cell phones, tablets, computers, and television has made the world much more connected than ever. Consequently, more and more Americans are becoming dependent on such devices that make daily tasks easier. Through these connections, the media is able to implement itself into everyday lives, and although these advancements improve people's lives, there are aspects that are negative. The media tends to be enjoyed for the benefits it offers with a disregard for its risks. Unfortunately, the current generation allows the media to shape their lives without acknowledging the potential harm. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These advertisements are present in many of today's viewing programs and as alcohol is shaped into adolescents lives, the more harmful the media becomes. Alcohol is only one of the many damaging impacts the media promotes. Commercials, a form of media, is persistent in providing goods that harm the community that is exposed to it. For example, when a child or adult is viewing television, they are exposed to commercials that reference food products at approximately ten times an hour, and these are foods with high amounts of calories (Rosiek). The way in which the media presents such foods makes adolescents much more vulnerable to making unhealthy choices. As a consequence, for every extra hour a child spends viewing television weekly, the risk of them developing obesity is increased by three percent (Rosiek). As inactivity decreases and the malicious food consumption increases during these television seasons, the obesity rates take a leap in number as well. Moreover, obesity has its own risks as well, as many children are faced with obesity, they are also challenged with diabetes, respiratory disorders, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases (Rosiek). • 25. Television Programs Can Support And Facilitate Language... For many years, parents have relied on using educational programs to teach and engage their children with new concepts and materials. Conversely, many children have also used television as an opportunity for learning and language development. For example, the rise of television programs like Elmo Street and Teletubbies demonstrates this upward trend of substituting media sources for teaching and learning. However, despite the increasing support from parents toward television programs, many researchers have mixed reviews on putting our children into viewing long hours of what they considered unnecessary learning. Thus in what follows of this paper, I will focus on explaining how television programs can support and facilitate language development. Moreover, I will also discuss the mixed literacy support for using television as a learning tool and finally, I will conduct a study that measures, specifically, the relationship between watching educational TV and learning novel words. Hopefully, with these measures, I will be able to find supporting evidence that proves educational TV can be a good predictor for word learning. Through the years, one continuous point of debate has been whether educational TV can facilitate and improve word learning in children. Many studies on this debate have found distinct and mixed research outcomes. For example, one study has been Mabel's Rice Word from Sesame Street, in which he found mixed supporting evidence that television programs can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of Mass Media Essay ''What the mass media offer is not popular art, but entertainment which is intended to be consumed like food, forgotten, and replaced by a new dish'' – W.H Auden. The quote is trying to convey the message that the mass media is just to humor people on a daily basis and then we'll forget about it at the end of the day, just like how we consume food on a daily basis and then replace it with a new dish. It is crucial to understand that the mass media is something that everyone around the world are exposed to every single day of our lives. Some parents would question my mother's choice of letting me watch such a violent cartoon at the tender age of three since it displayed a lot of unforgivingly violent moments such as: how many chokes and gags Tom performed on Jerry and vice versa. It is a tough question to answer, as is the question of whether Tom and Jerry was considered "excessively violent" television program unfit for a young kid. However, in all honesty, it is up to the parents of the child to regulate what they believe personally to be the best fit for a young child to watch. There is a huge difference between now and then: parents have much more power on regulating what their children see on TV with the technology of parental control that started surfacing recently which did not exist in my time. In this context, many people believed, and probably still do, that the government should have acted as a surrogate for parents whose only control of the TV was the power button. Today, parents can filter or tailor TV programs in majority of ways like the V–chip for example, which allows certain programs blocked off if the parents deem it so or based on ratings. There is also another avenue like the cable satellite boxes that exist today which offer a vast variety of screening tools to prevent children from exploring television channels or programs a parent might feel too ... Local news outlets that would come on after the show would discuss the results of the show on–air, people would call in after the show to participate in the voting process. When it first came out, my family and I were hooked on American Idol. The television program, American Idol, and its appeal to consumers and advertisers is the relationship that's studied in Chapter 2 of Henry Jenkins's book, Convergence Culture. At its core, American Idol claims to be a reality show to showcase lesser known singers. But yet, almost every aspect of American Idol can be seen as a type of advertising, for example, Coca–Cola branded the real room, where contestants wait before going onstage, offers soft drink promotions where the winner can go to the finales, and is often a prominent sponsorship figure at the American Idol finalists national concert tour. Yet, despite the blant consumerism that is in these shows, viewers still tune into the program time and the time again. It is this conundrum that Jenkins hopes to figure out in his analysis. The rise of convergence culture and next generation technologies like the VCR gave rise to an American public that was fed up with ads and "harder to impress." Jenkins defines the term "impress" from two different perspectives. In the eyes of the consumer, "impress" is used as a verb. Consumers are looking for something ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

TV MYTHS Essay TELEVISION AS A MEDIUM FOR MODERN DAY MYTHS Throughout the 1950s and 1960s television programming developed rapidly into more than an assortment of fact and fiction narratives; it became itself a social text for an increasing population, "functioning as a kind of code through which people gleaned a large portion of their information, intellectual stimulation, and distraction" (Danesi, 240). Since its inception in the mid–1930s, many of television's programs have become the history of many cultures. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The television programs of the 1950s and 1960s sugar–coated the typical family and built up the mythology of a patriarchal family. However, this mythology was challenged by the uprising of strong, independent, working women. For example, the Fresh Prince of Bel–Air (1990) depicted a clean–cut and wealthy family that was black, with a mother that was a professor at a university. The Cohen family in The O.C. (2003) drama television series represent a wealthy, white family, with a working mother who is the major 'bread–winner' of the family. These shows and many others portrayed strong, independent women who were attempting to survive, socially and professionally, in a world that was deconstructing patriarchal structures (Danesi, 230). Strong–willed women are not the only force that is disassembling these traditions. The dysfunctional family is now also taking into effect. The show Desperate Housewives (2004) demonstrates the increasing number of families in this period that are separating and losing the traditional value of 'family'. This show contains cheating spouses, and generally wives who are desperately vying for attention and love. Mr. Rogers, through his television show, has made kids believe that they are special for just being who they are. A similar idea is also true regarding Disney princesses, in that the little girls who emulate them believe that life should be lived as a fairy tale. As children grow up, they are very easily influenced by what their surroundings, particularly by what they see and hear. Without the unique methods of Censorship, what kinds of films would be being released into the public? The government, of the country in which the movie was made always did this. In 1956 the rules were changed. Each movie's script was now required to go before a Film Board, before being produced. If approved the company was allowed to go on with production. In 1968 the Film Board of the Motion Picture Association of America adopted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 4. X–No one under 17 is admitted. Throughout History Production companies have been influenced by Religious, Ethnic, Racial and political groups, who have lobbied against content they deem controversial. In 1953 a producer named Otto Preminger, made a movie called "The Moon is Blue". This movie caused the collapse of the Production Code from previous years. The movie caused such controversy because of one line in it " a professional virgin". Because in 1953 the scripts of movies were read before they were produced, and the organization CARA was not yet established, Otto Preminger was not given a seal of approval. Before he was denied a seal of approval, we were given the opportunity to cut the line out of the movie and go on. So he agreed to cut it out, but the rest of the movie had quotes in it that implied similar things to that. This is what started the slow loss of power for the Production Code. The Code was renewed in 1956, 1961 and then in 1968 the new approach of the organization CARA was reached. As of 1990, the Motion Picture Association of America has a newer system of rating movies. It is quite similar to that of 1968. There are now five categories: 1. G– general audiences 2. PG– parental guidance advised. 3. PG–13: parental guidance advised for anyone under 13 years of age.

These characteristics are shaped by society," (Gender Roles) These roles constitute the standards of the society and they are transmitted from one generation to another by education. Children learn these standards since their birth. Parents teach them how to act, to say and to behave according to their sex. Also, children learn the gender roles from other sources like school, neighborhood and television. Actually, television is playing a significant role in the education of people. From different programs presented on television, children acquire many knowledge about how to live, to speak and to behave according to the roles attribute to men and women. In the USA, "Baby Daddy" television show is one of the program which teaches people about the gender roles. "Baby Daddy" show spreads the gender roles by three different ways, first by the way the personal characters of men and women are described, secondly, by the attitude of men and women toward the Domestic behaviors, finally, by the way professional occupation of men and women are presented. "Baby Daddy", is a television show which demonstrates how a boy single parent assumes the parental responsibilities. • 98. How Television Programs Can Support And Facilitate Word... Introduction For many years, parents have relied on using educational programs to teach and engage their children with new concepts and materials. Thus in what follows of this paper, I will focus on explaining how television programs can support and facilitate word development. Throughout the years, one continuous point of debate has been whether educational TV can facilitate and improve word learning in children. Many studies on this debate have found distinct and mixed research outcomes. For example, one study has been Mabel's Rice Word from Sesame Street, in which he found mixed supporting evidence that television ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 102. Essay on The Media's Influence on Teen Violence On April 20, 1999, two students walked into Columbine High School armed with shot guns and explosives. The incident ended in tragic results, as fifteen families will forever set one less plate out at the dinner table. March 24, 1998, an eleven year old and a fourteen year old walked into school with hand guns, killing four and injuring ten classmates (teen–violence.com). Thirty years ago, the biggest problem that kids at school were faced with was forgetting homework or being sent to the principal's office. There are many kids today who may fear that the person sitting next to them in class may have a loaded handgun in their book bag. The youth justice system was defined by the 1962 Family Court Act that was invented to deal with kids from the 1950's who only stole from the market or carried B.B. guns. It is powerless to the teens of today who commit random killings, robberies, and rapes. Research has also shown that kids who grow up in poverty or lower income levels are more likely to exhibit violent behavior. As more and more children are being raised in poor families, they suffer from the instability caused by their parents' lack of money. Janelle Rohr quotes a journalist for The Washington Spectator when she concludes that teenagers' violent behavior is an expression of frustration and an effort to take some of the wealth they are denied (14). This could mean robbing, raping, or even killing. It is mainly inner cities where these crimes occur. Rohr states that "Homicides take the lives of more children in the District of Columbia than any other type of injury, including car accidents, house fires, or drownings" (171). The attention that the teens get from committing crimes may be the only type of attention they ever get, and this may be the reason that many young people turn to the life of a criminal. The National Rifle Association (NRA) has also been blamed for the lack of severity in gun control. Almost anyone in the U.S. can buy a gun. Influence of Television Programs on Children Kayla Raguse Joseph Grabowski Rhetoric & Composition 1 11 October 2010 Influence of Television Programs on Children Before there was television, children had options of playing outside, playing board games, or doing simple activities like reading or drawing. Now that TV exists to a high extremity, it has become apparent that nowadays these children shows have surpassed physical and intellectual activities and have now become a way of life for children. Studies have also been conducted trying to determine whether or not watching television to great amounts is affecting the eating habits and psyche of young children. A study published by US Journal Pediatrics found that more psychological difficulties dealing with peers, emotional issues, and hyperactivity are likely to develop with children who spend numerous hours daily in front of television or playing video games (Yahoo! Researchers studied 1,013 children ages 10 to 11 and had them complete a 25–point questionnaire, a self–report about daily hours watching television or playing games, and measured their physical activity using an accelerometer in which the kids wore around their waist for seven days (Yahoo! It was concluded that children spending two or more hours a day were likely to score higher on the questionnaire which indicated, "They had more psychological difficulties than kids who did not spend a lot of time in front of a screen," (Yahoo! Since 1982, the National Institute of Mental Health, along with other reputable health organizations has collected data that connects media violence, with violent acts. Conclusions deduced from this data prove that violent programs on television lead to aggressive behavior by children and teenagers who watch those programs. Television violence affects young people of all ages, all socio–economic levels, and all levels of intelligence. Today's children view vast amounts of violence on television. A steady diet of death, killings, torture, and other grotesque acts may be viewed on any day by vulnerable youth. This association has been easy to support and is substantiated in every major scientific report released in the last twenty years. It has become general knowledge to professional counselors and educators that excessive and unsupervised exposure to television violence increases the use of violence to resolve conflict, while it desensitizes these youth to acts of violence. This exposure to violence in the media makes viewers less critical of real life violence. Since the media often represents violence as "happy violence" devoid of pain, suffering, and consequences, they are not providing the audience with an accurate or realistic portrayal of violence. Many studies have also confirmed a cumulative effect of exposure to violence as researchers have traced patterns from childhood exposure to adult social behavior. The National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence was in charge of investigating these issues and making recommendations to the President. The media's task force report was titled, "Violence and the Media." Conclusions drawn from this report show that real violence was caused in part by the desire of action groups for media attention; and that violence in society could be reduced if the news gave groups the ability to enhance their communication. • 114. Effects Of Children 's Television On Language Development... Nelson and Co. reported that children between the ages of two and five watched television on average 32 hours a week – an eight year high. Parents' opinions on their children's television viewing has contributed to this upward trend. In 2014, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center surveyed 1,557 parents of children between the ages of 2 and 10; they found that 44% of parents believed that children's television enhanced learning. In addition, the center reported that 78% of parents of children between the ages of two and five believed that educational television improved their children's language and cognitive development. The burgeoning years of language development are not only capricious and vulnerable in nature, but they are also easily influenced by external factors. Therefore, it is imperative to evaluate the effects of children's television on language development. Children's television negatively impacts language development because it impedes word acquisition, delays language acquisition and negatively affects literacy outcomes. Educational television negatively impacts language development because it hampers vocabulary acquisition. Vocabulary acquisition is characterized by an infant's first words and word spurt (i.e., the rapid growth in a child's vocabulary). Zimmerman, Christakis and Meltzoff (2007) investigated the relationship between media exposure and language development in children under two years of age. 1,008 parents of children between the ages of two months and ... Corporations are cashing in on this lucrative opportunity because television is the "primary medium used to advertise to children" (Desrochers & Holt, 2007, p. 198). Watching television means also watching advertisements and commercials. With children being such an easy group to make impressions on, it is no wonder that advertising geared towards children costs companies billions of dollars each year. Granted these advertisements are not limited to television, it still shows how lucrative advertising towards children can be. If this proved to be true, children would be much less likely to request certain food products that are not good for their health. The study suggests that the effects of advertisements can be reduced if an adult who is also watching the advertisements properly mediates the children. It also investigates three effects of advertising including children's liking, desires, and intended requests for products advertised. The conclusion was that the factual mediation by adults was not effective and only made the children like the products advertised less than they did before. Although the children could understand and learn from the factual comments, they could not apply their cognitive defenses and understand the commercial at the same time. According to Fosu, Warren, Wicks, and Wicks (2009), disclaimer plugs such as "part of this nutritious breakfast" could educate children about nutrition and decrease childhood obesity. Desrochers and Holt (2007) claimed that the authors of a study "concluded that television advertising specifically targeted to children is fundamentally unfair, because of young children's limited comprehension of the nature and purpose of television advertising, and therefore warrants governmental action" (p. 184). Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the process of transmitting and broadcasting television programs through the Internet using Internet Protocol (IP). A broadband connection is used as the medium of transmission for IPTV. Along consumers to tune in to their favorite programming when, where, and how they want. Improving the user experience compared to a traditional television transmission such as radio frequency broadcast, satellite broadcast and/or cable television. When downloading a file from the Internet, the file doesn't travel in one big piece, as might be expected. Instead, it 's broken up into small pieces, known as packets sent to specific IP address, a numeric address given to every computer on the Internet (194.66.82.11). • 130. The Issue Of Substance Abuse Essay It is well known that any form of substance use can be fatal, but so can a lot of other things: choking, accidents, health issues, and sheer bad luck. However, there is something special about substance abuse – fatalities from substance use are considered preventable. Take deaths associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, lung cancer brought on by smoking, or heart attacks associated with cocaine use. A person could die in a car crash, from lung cancer, or a heart attack without ever touching alcohol, cigarettes, or cocaine respectively. However, there is an increase in death associated with these items. The most curious part of this is the legal versus illegal categorization of substances. According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco is considered the leading cause of preventable death (CDC, 2016). Yet, not only is it legal, a person in the U.S. can purchase cigarettes as young as 18, which is three years earlier than the legal age to drink alcohol. This knowledge leads to questions about addiction and prevalence of substance use. Besides being readily available and highly addictive, are there other factors in the use and abuse of legal substances and are they good indicators of illicit drug use? There is clear evidence to support that children, adolescents, and adults learn and emulate what they see on television. The American Academy of Pediatrics has done research and come to the conclusion that "the causes of adolescent substance use are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 134. Racial Stereotypes According to NYDailyNews, the average American watches more than five hours of television every day. Through these television programs, people are exposed to many issues in the representation of women, children, gender, sexuality, and race. Racial stereotypes are still evident today, even though times have changed since the early 1900s. They provide negative or false assumptions about a variety of groups, as well as ideas that do not necessarily pertain to every person. Fox Tv's show Glee is an accurate portrayal of the many racial stereotypes that are apparent in today's society. Glee offers viewers a complex construction of race that both perpetuates negative racial stereotypes for humorous purposes and attempts to disrupt stereotypical notions of "token" characters. The exposure of race/ethnic groups can be seen throughout various media contexts, however television offers recurring characters that viewers can identify and continue to form meaningful bonds with. This involvement stimulates social learning, facilitates persuasion, and can promote social stereotypes (Tukachinsky, Mastro, & Yarchi, 2017). Television can be used for valid and significant comparisons over time. For example, Blacks and Latinos in particular have been portrayed on television and has been a source of controversy and criticism. It is true that advancements have been made over the years, however these groups still lack the representation that they should be receiving (Tukachinsky, Mastro, Yarchi, ... Originally debuting in 1963 under the British Broadcasting Corporation, Doctor Who included an upperclass white male playing the lead character along side another white male and two white females. Doctor Who aired during the 1960's when Great Britain was still recovering from the destruction of World War II and was also facing the reality that they were not the world power they once were. Also, large influx of immigrations were entering Great Britain during this period. Class, gender, and racial prejudices were extremely prevalent within society and Doctor Who was no exception. Yet eventually attitudes change and the producers of the show understood that to remain relevant within popular culture, they would also need to change. Even though, Doctor Who has made strives over the past five decades to create a more inclusive television program, they still lack in accurate representation of society. During the 1960's, Great Britain was coming to terms with the decline of their once massive empire as well as overall lose of world power. The United States of America and the Soviet Union were now the dominating powers, leaving Great Britain frustrated. That is where media stepped in the help counteract this fact. A particular focus of the study was the media's portrayal of violence and the public's personal experiences. Television is the primary source of media for most American citizens, and therefore television violence is the primary source for viewing violence in both adults and children. This report gave evidence of the media's ability to socialize the viewers to the norms and values of the culture. Previously the ability of television to do so had been disputed that the media was seen only as a re–enforcer and not a creator. Research performed by Albert Bandura concluded there were strong short–term effects of exposure to violence in the media that affects children. In his studies, children watched models perform aggressive acts against a doll. These acts of aggression were presented under three circumstances: 1. the children saw the model rewarded for aggressive behavior, 2. the children saw the model receive no consequences for their aggressive behavior, and 3. the children saw the model punished. • 146. Research Paper On Peaky Blinders In the last five years there has been an enormous shift in the way television is consumed, largely due to the growing availability of content online. The internet has brought the power of what, when and where a program is consumed into the hands of the viewer (Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). This has caused a surge in both the amount, and the frequency of television consumed, leading to a growth of a viewing practice known as 'binge–watching' (Matrix, 2014; Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). Streaming services, such as Netflix, have helped to facilitate this change in consumption practices (Pittman & Sheehan, 2015). Netflix is an online streaming platform with a large variety of television programs and movies, which are made available to subscribers for a small monthly fee. Some of the content is exclusive to the streaming site, and others have originated elsewhere but are now available through the streaming service. Peaky Blinders is a show that falls into the latter category, having originally aired on BBC Two in the United Kingdom. The first three seasons of Peaky Blinders have recently been made available on Netflix. As shown in my media journal, this was how I consumed this program. Television And Internet News Programs News or Nonsense Television and internet news programs have began to stray away from a strictly informative report of current happenings to vague, non–factually based entertainment stories. This is a direct result of society's desire to worry about everyone's feelings. In the past, viewers passionately desired accurate information and statistics on the nation's current events. As of now, a different generation of viewers and new's providers bestow the supply and demand of news stories based on emotions, rather than fact. With extremist groups becoming increasingly popular the demand for highly biased news is snowballing. New's corporations like FOX capitalize on this by providing news that is consistently biased to one point of view. Having a one–sided production such as FOX creates a type of animosity between them and their competition. This seems rather childish, making these top tier new companies look like a joke. In result, a viewer will struggle to find a new's broadcast that provides more than a couple of relevant stories based on factual information. Instead, the bulk of content is displayed in a look at me, feel bad for me, or look at them format. From this, the broadcasters work at the heart–strings of their viewers. • 154. The Reality Of Television Programs Today's television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over fifty years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in today's world. Because of today's TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look like. Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being parents. The hit comedy "Modern Family" has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. As Greg Graffin wrote in his article "Anarchy in the Tenth Grade" "It is also a shining example of how easy it is to follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality–which only motivates me to keep fighting for originality."
