Lee came as close to a model Cadet as the military academy had ever seen getting no demerits the
whole time he was at West point. Also finishing top five in his class all four years that he went there

successful in the military. His family had financial problems and his father had to leave for the West
Indies. Robert was in the United States Military Academy at West Point, and that is where he

He served under General Winfield Scott and Lee titled himself as a "brave battle commander and
brilliant tactician." After winning the war with Mexico, Lee was known as a hero by Scott.
In 1859, Lee returned to the Army and was told to end a slave insurrection led by John Brown at
Harper's Ferry. Lee's plan to attack only took an hour to end. His name was then put on a brief list to
lead the Union Army if the United States were to go to war. But when Abraham Lincoln offered her
a position to command the Union forces, he turned it down. He then resigned from the military and

States. Even though Lee turned on his country, he is still loved by many. He is an influential figure
in the eye of the public, especially in the south. The impact that Robert E. Lee had on the United
States is enormous and cannot be measured. On January 19th, 1807, Robert Edward Lee was born in
Stratford Hall, Virginia. He was the son of Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, a general in the
Revolutionary War who was friends and served with George Washington. His father being a general,
and being there for the War of 1812 influenced the young Robert E. Lee to pursue a career in the
military. Lee attended West Point to get his career started. He graduated second in his class and
became a Brevet Second Lieutenant. After West Point, Lee became a member of the Corps of
Engineers. He would travel around to build forts, bridges, roads, and trench works. Soon Lee would
help divert the Mississippi River away from St. Louis to prevent any serious damage to the city.
Being in the military, Lee was called to action when the United States went to war with Mexico in
the Mexican American War. During the war, Lee would prove vital as he would go on
reconnaissance missions. After the war, Lee was highly recognized for the role he played in

Robert E. Lee began life in humble circumstances facing a life of trials through all the hardships in
his life, Lee became and remains an American symbol and the ultimate icon in the American South.
He has survived through many hardships including losing two grandchildren and even one of his

the case with Robert E. Lee. He was smart, loyal and above all, complicated. We like to make him
out as some old general guy who fought for the South in the Civil War. Eventually lost at Gettysburg
and because it was the turning point of the Civil War; he became famous for losing. He is a lot more
than just that. He was an actual person who, from his birth up to his death, dealt with real life
situations. On January 19, 1807, Robert E. Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia to Henry and Anne
Lee. His father was a Revolutionary War hero, nicknamed Light–Horse Harry", also being a Major
General. Being born in a military family, Robert seemed likely to follow in his father's footsteps.

class in 1829. In 1831, he met and married his wife Mary Anna Randolph Custis, the great
granddaughter of George Washington and Martha Washington. They later had seven children: four

When Lee headed North and started invading he had been checked again at Gettysburg. The assault
was called Pickett's Charge that had a wide spread which cost the South badly. The musket was
replaced by the rifle which made attacks much more hopeless. Lee had failed to notice how well the

He was, however, a poor manager of his affairs, and was constantly dodging his creditors, providing
very little of substance for his family. He was a waster, with no thought for their welfare. A man
with no sense of responsibility to his affairs, Henry Lee eventually ended up in jail for a year for
non–payment of his debts. Upon his release, he spent every waking moment writing his memoirs,
with no regard for his family at all. Lee's mother was Ann Carter Lee, daughter of Charles Carter.

Despite the mistakes his father and brother made, Lee managed to grow learning the ways of a true
Southern gentleman. The departure of his father and two older half–brothers made Lee the man of
the house at an early age. His mother, Ann Carter, raised Lee in modest circumstances and helped
him to learn standard of conduct. Lee grew up in modest conditions, and though he received the
normal education for someone of his class, he had to earn his own living and didn't live the easy–
going plantation life that most members of his family did. Since his mother did not have sufficient
cash to send Lee to go to college, he chose instead to enter West Point military and academy. He
entered in 1825 at the age of 18. At West Point Lee excelled tremendously. He finished second in his

Although Lee was a full colonel, he had no troops. Finally the confederacy's president, Jefferson
Davis, sent him to stop Union foes coming in from
Western Virginia. He failed and was reassigned to building coastal fortifications in
South Carolina and Georgia.

General Robert E. Lee was the leading general for the confederate army during the civil war and a
revered heroic figure in the South now and then. Born in Stratford, Virginia Lee was head of his
home states military until promoted to general–in–chief towards the end of the civil war. The
opinion about General Lee is divided some have a deep respect for his military brilliance while
others question some of his tactics. General Lee was a very smart man not just in military terms but

General Lee had vital victories against the Potomac army until reaching Gettysburg in 1863, despite
being undermanned and poorly supplied. One example of General Lee being undermanned is during
his victory at Chancellorsville where Lee was forced "to divide his army three times in the face of
the enemy while being outnumbered two to one"(Reid 150). This passage taken from Reid's book
gives a good demonstration as to what General Lee had to face in multiple crucial battles during the
war. "Lee could muster up only half the size of Hooker's–65,000 men"(Reid 152), two to one odds
are extremely difficult to fight against in any situation but especially fighting with less than standard
supplied soldiers. Even with the odds "Lee believed that small armies could beat big ones"(Reid 18)
and Lee had tremendous confidence in his troops and his strategy. One of the main reason this battle
was won by the confederates is the stellar flanking techniques drawn up by General Lee. This
sizable victory over the union forces, commanded by Major General Joseph Hooker, was arguably
the biggest of General Lee's military career. Even this victory at Chancellorsville being such an
overwhelming victory for the South it came at the cost of Stonewall Jackson's mortal injury. With
this crucial loss of Stonewall, who was an irreplaceable lieutenant to General Lee, the Southern
