The document summarizes the key points from a research project on bullying. It describes conducting a survey of 9 people to compare experiences of bullying to online statistics. The survey found that 88% of respondents had been bullied, supporting the 46% statistic. It also discusses how different artists like Shepard Fairey and Valentina Kulagina could inform the design of an anti-bullying poster with bold styles and colors to convey the seriousness of the issue.
4. 1. 28% of children did not tell anyone about the abuse. My research suggests that in later life,
people become more open and less worried about wether or not they had been bullied. The
confinements of School are a sure way to make someone feel like there's no way out.
2. 38% of young people have been affected by cyber-bullying, with abusive emails (26%) and text
messages (24%) being the most common methods. Although by my study, it shows that Cyber
bullying goes under the radar, I really think its a growing epidemic, although I do think its one that
girls and boys 'though girls are more likely to receive sustained Cyber Abuse' pander too. I think
the percentages of studies and research can vary wildly as the internet is very confidential, and
most girls don't like admitting to Cyber Bullying. I really think with more information and advice
from further informed parents, Cyber bullying can be dealt with to a further extent.
3. 30,439 children called ChildLine in 2010/11 about bullying.
4. Almost half (46%) of children and young people say they have been bullied at school at some
point in their lives. By looking at the tally of my Bully Survey, the statistics come out to suggest
that this statement is most likely true, and it should be looked at more. It's a well known fact that a
large percentage of people will lie out of embarrassment or shame that they've been bullied in the
past, and by my survey, from the students of E block whom have left the national school
curriculum, I think they feel less judged to give their true response as opposed to when they were in
school, as the peer pressure is dissolved due to the diversity and large scale of the college, and its
standards/principles.
5. Valentina Kulagina, a Russian graphic designer, born and active in Moscow.
I chose to look at Valentina and her contribution to the booming rise of the Propaganda era. Her
work is extremely bold, almost geometrical, and most of all, powerful. A lot of the silhouettes and
‘Characters’ portrayed are tall and looming. And not because they’re scary or the enemy. They’re
showing soldiers in their prime, and how big of a role they played. These posters had to show the
people, and even the army that they were bigger and better than the rest, and they were fighting. I
love this style, and although I find it slightly over-powering for this day and age, and seeing as I’m
not promoting anyone in particular… this ‘Large’ scale can still be used effectively in conveying a
Bully, how daunting they seem. There’s not much known about Valentina, what we do know is that
she was married to Gustav Klutsis, very similar in his Art work that was also heavily to do with
Propaganda, she went under the radar as far as recognition, heavily over-shadowed by her
Husbands name. Its believed that she made many contributions to his work without noted credit,
and it’s safe to assume that she played a key part in defining Propaganda, at least in Russia, at the
time.
6. I have to include Shepard Fairey in this next bio. As I can’t not take inspiration from his work.
Simply because the use of bold, vibrant colours clashing to create shadow and effects is too
appealing, and would work perfectly in my work, characterizing bullies as these strong deep
coloured characters, and generally, I want to keep the characters in my piece un-recognisable, as to
negate any issues. I don’t want people to assume my piece is biased based on the sides of ethnicity
or looks. I just want a clean depiction of what’s happening in the world. And strong support for the
victims of abuse.
Fairey is a graphic designer from the USA, and only recently has he started to break through into
political propaganda. Shepard has found massive success in his pieces such as his stylised, heavily
distinguishable ‘Hope’ Propaganda work from 2008. It’s hard not to note him in any of todays work
as although I think the work he’s done has of course been around for the longest time, he’s
definitely made a huge dent into this type of work, and I’d say that a large portion of Artists to
come will have words for him. His work for me is simple and very effective, relying on colours to
get his point across, wether it be subtle or bold, he has the choice with his pallet. Shepard uses his
formal elements to the core, and you can’t miss it.

8. In conclusion, I have gathered and can present the following information.
. 8 out of 9 people (88%) that I questioned were bullied and affected by others in various ways.
. Almost half (46%) of children and young people say they have been bullied at school at some point in
their lives. This is a high percentage, and looking at my research, I think it’s even higher. So many people
keep these things to themselves, and seeing as this statistic asked children in addition to calculate it, there’s a
heavy possibility of withheld truth as children find it very hard to admit to these things. And from personal
account, I can understand why. Bullying’s everywhere and children need help.
. People seemed to hold strong opinions when I spoke to them, although I can’t really account for this as my
surveys responses were locked. Although they weren’t biased, I’d like to conduct more research as to how
people react when presented with a question and a completely unique choice to make for themselves.
. I think my questions were varied and diverse enough to get a good understanding of this epidemic that goes
on every single day. They all correlated back to my research and they’ve concluded for me that there’s a
problem.
. I think the people that I asked were truthful with their answers, which reinforces my theory that once
children turned teens have left school, that they feel less constricted and more at ease to answer without
prejudice, although once again as we’ve seen and as other studies show, bullying can leave long term
confidence issues, and percentages will always vary from study to study. I think I got a good group of
participants and I’ve gathered a good conclusion on the subject.
. I’ve realised that this is bigger than I previously thought, and that my poster needs to be bold and to the
point to change things. Shepard’s style will be extremely useful in conjunction with Valentines ability to
convey power and force as well as hope and courage.
