1. Work Diary – Depth of Field
Evaluation:
Depth of field is a technique that I learned about and how there are two types – maximum (which is
where everything in the shot is in focus) and minimum where only the foreground is in focus. I like
both effects for different reasons, however unless you have a strong image or idea for maximum
depth of field I personally think your work can end up looking like any other regular photo. I enjoyed
shooting depth of field and learning more technical things in photography and how I can change
things on my camera to get different effects in photos.
Here is an example of some of my work. The photo on the left shows maximum depth of field.
Though I don’t think the photo is anything special as it doesn’t have any real message or idea behind
it, I like the way I had to direct everything in the shot and think it through carefully e.g. the
expression of the model, the pose, where she was located etc.
The photo on the right is one I took in the studio showing minimum depth of field. I liked this effect
more as I like the way it allows for focus on the foreground – this gives the audience of the photo
somewhere clear to look. Though I love this effect I definitely found it more difficult to do as you
must ensure that the camera is set perfectly to get the best possible shot where everything in the
foreground is in focus, sharp and clear and everything else in the shot is blurred. Admittedly I think
this shot could be better in terms of getting the foreground sharper.
Idea Development:
Depth of field is definitely something I loved shooting and something I want to use in my project.
Locking at doing mostly portraiture work, minimum depth of field would be perfect me s this way I
could get total focus on the face. I think if I were to do a shoot with extreme fantasy or surreal make
I could maximum depth of field - location is something I would need to carefully think out though to
ensure that there was still a focal point in the photo. I think when maximum depth of field is shot
without a focal point it can end up looking like another regular photo which is something I would
want to avoid.
