Peepholes Sociology
In "NY State of Mind," Nas talks about the desolate conditions of living in the New York inner city
streets as a poor black man, plagued with harassing police, gang violence, and drugs. This is
described specifically when NAS, who helped to "reintroduce New York hip hop in the gangsta era,"
describes "bullet holes left in my peepholes" referencing the shootings that have become normalized
in these areas (Orejuela, 2015, pg. 146). "Peepholes" is a homophone for people, specifically
referring people he personally knows, such as friends or family, with the use of the personal pronoun
"my" in the first person context. However, Nas does not become of victim of this violence, but
instead threatens retaliation when he says "hand me a 9 and I'll defeat ... Show more content on

This aspect of hip hop culture became so engrained within "codes of behavior, secret gathering
places, slang, and aesthetic standards," and thus had the most racially ethnic artists, which is why
these people were mostly targeted by police for these actions. Taki 183's graffiti was an act of
political resistance against the "cleaning up" of New York City streets, which was a euphemism for
whitening these neighborhoods economically and physically, with the displacement of poor, people
of color. Specifically, his work is called tagging because the artist is "making his or her presence
known and proclaiming his or her identity through a unique mark" (Orejuela, 2015, pg. 17). The
artist of this graffiti artwork, and others like it were also a blatant display by people of color
peacefully fighting back the state for its intended demise and who at the time, spent thousands of
dollars to rid the streets of these pieces of artwork because of its direct connection to people of
color. This work of resistance was so successful because other graffiti artists would try to compete
with Taki 183's work and thus, they too would create their own piece of work. This then made it
almost impossible for the city to paint over every piece of work, but this also made it more
dangerous for the artists themselves, as the penalties for graffiti became even more severe as people
of color became even more policed. This artist specifically, made this artwork most popular as he
performed it during such a tense time and received major exposure by the New York media. Phase 2
was infamous for creating bubble writing, also known as softies, but was also a b–boy. He also
rapped and graffitied during the 1970s when the state of New York was in a war with the residents
of color and the lower class. Phase 2 art is referred to

Crime And Its Effects On Urban Areas
Crime is a familiar and perilous concern in American society, and crime damages the foundation of
this America. The ongoing population shift from rural to urban areas has helped to facilitate crime in
the United States through the decades. Showing the focused element and impact of crime in society
and the consequence of crime in urban areas, is to better understand the people, and knowing that
when criminals know the procedures of the crime they get new opportunity to do it. Examining the
crimes can give insight into who and why, but there are many extenuating circumstances which need
to be factored. Urbanization has given opportunity and capability for the criminal element to thrive.
Criminal activities are an onus for any nation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Department of Homeland Security 2017) Race will be defined as white and non–white. Crime also
needs to be defined as "white collar" or "blue collar", this allows for differentiation between who is
committing which types of crime. the Letric Law Library defines white and blue collar crime as,
"Blue–collar crime is a term given to criminal acts more likely to be committed by citizens of lower
social class in society, such as those which inflict direct harm on the person or property of others.
This is in contrast to white–collar crime, which is generally committed by citizens of higher social
class, who are more likely to be presented with the opportunity to commit such crimes." (Blue
Collar Crime). Blue collar crimes are more likely to be of a violent nature and committed by people
in a lower economic position. Although White collar crime can be extremely harmful, it is not
generally physical, or physically damaging and for the most part committed by people of a higher
social status. For the purposes of this paper, blue collar crime as it has been defined will be the
focus. Urban crime is being committed at a higher rate than rural crime, according to National
Crime Vitim's Survey, "In 2012, the rate of violent victimizations reported by victims to the NCVS
was 3,240 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or older in urban areas, 2,380 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or

Essay about Recycling Wealth in the Inner City
Recycling Wealth in the Inner City
INTRODUCTION
The modern story of developed areas is a move from the inner city to the suburbs. This
decentralization of metropolitan areas has left urban areas neglected. Such a transformation has had
negative consequences, because it has inherently meant the abandonment of those left behind in
urban centers. Furthermore, the issue is complicated by the fact that the distinction between those
moving to the suburbs and those left behind has been defined largely by race. As Kain notes,
"the means by which racial segregation in housing has been maintained are amply documented.
They are both legal and extra–legal; for example: racial covenants; racial zoning; violence or threats
of violence; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There must be efforts to counteract the movement towards the suburbs, and programs aimed at
rebuilding the inner city. Ideally, the end result might be transforming the inner city black ghettos
into thriving black business districts through investing and directing resources back towards urban
centers.
HISTORY
In terms of considering the potential for rebuilding the inner city and creating a thriving district of
concentrated black Americans, it is important to note that such an ideal is not as unprecedented as
one might be led to believe. .
A history of concentrations of Black economic activity would be incomplete without mention of
Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the once thriving African American business district that existed there. In the
early part of the 20th century, northern Tulsa was home to a 36–block district dubbed "Black Wall
Street" and while it was not actually a center for financial trading it was a prospering business
center. Tulsa was home to Black physicians, attorneys, and scholars. One doctor, for example, Dr.
Berry, owned the bus system and was known to make incomes of $500 a day. Unfortunately, the
success of Tulsa came to a dramatic halt when the aftermath of a race riot concluded with the area
even being bombed from the air by the National Guard (www.blackwallstreet.org).
A second "Black Wall Street" district arose in Durham, North Carolina by the

Marvin Gaye's Song 'Inner City Blues'
"Inner City Blues" "Inner City Blues," short for "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" is a
song written by, the pop/R&B classic, Marvin Gaye and James Nyx Jr. This song was released as the
third and final single from the compelling song of his 1971 milestone album, "What's Going On." In
this song, Gaye talks about poverty and hopelessness in the ghetto urban places of the 1960's. Many
of Gaye's songs contain political and social issues; "Inner City Blues" is great melody that depicts
the political injustice seen during the Vietnam War. "Inner City Blues," inspired by political unrest
over the Vietnam War and Marvin Gaye's brother experiences from the war, helped Gaye become

The Inner City Of Los Angeles
Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you're inside before
the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good education so that
one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have both a mother and a
father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because attending an inner city, LA
county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or my peers. Our teachers had
checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and everyday there was yet another fight
happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my classmates and I take completely different
paths. The strong support system I had at home proved effective. As I went on to go to college,
many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state of our public school system had clearly failed them.
During my undergraduate studies, the stories of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I
remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of inner city people of color and the mobility they are
granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non profit program that taught previously incarcerated
youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately intrigued by the stories of what had led these children
to a life of crime at such a young age. In these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went
down the same path many years before and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect
between the school system

Classroom Observation Paper
Introduction
A major part of the college social scene is revolved around alcohol use, drinking, partying and going
out. That is why bars particularly have become a popular attraction for college students to migrate to
after a long week of classes. Stress from the syllabi and the eagerness to socialize are factors in the
motivation getting college students out and about. My curiosity as a college student myself, has led
me to study other college students' behavior when they go to bars and "distress" from arduous
schoolwork. In my research, I observe and compare how students behave in a bar setting in two
different locations: West Hartford, Connecticut and Charleston, South Carolina.

Florence Cathedral Comparison Essay
Comparing architectural masterpieces, The Florence Cathedral located in Florence, Tuscany, and the
second being the Temple of Heaven with in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. These structures
share similarities due to their dome style roof and the religious importance of their respective
cultures. The Temple of heaven was built in 1406 – 1420, during the rise of the Forbidden City. The
Temples purpose was to serve as a complex to hold annual ceremonies of prayers to Heaven for
good harvest, as well as to serve as a Taoist temple. The Florence Cathedral construction started in

Michael Porter's The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City
The essay "The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City" by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of
inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages
and disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city
have failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the
city as a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because
they treated the inner city as an "isolated island" (317), separated from surrounding economy which
favored local small business that did not bring in outside business.
Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard
Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry
competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace
and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high
honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also
elected into. He is known as the "c" and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and
company strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition
and economic development. Some of his most influential books include Competitive Strategy:
Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Competitive Advantage: Creating and
Sustaining Superior Performance and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value–Based Competition
On Results.
In the essay, "The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City," Porter explained the reason that
numerous past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due
to the increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to
create real change, we have to start with the notion that inner–city businesses should not only be
profitable but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Many would think that a business
in the inner–city would not thrive because business prosperity depends on location, however, it also
varies on the way a

The diagram is a depiction of loading a skipper, a small boat designed to deposit and withdraw cargo
from a large ship able to traverse large sea, whilst navy officers, distinguished by their blue coats,
are recording the results. I picked this diagram to use and relate to commerce, because the strength
in London trading lied in several aspects that are represented in the presentation. This has clear
implications and can be used to give analysis on commerce in Victorian London. In order to
demonstrate this, I would like to focus on three specific objects, and how each of them relate to
commerce, within the diagram: the containers that are being loaded, the sigil in the middle of the
picture, and the officers in the picture. The barrels that are being used contain various items judging
from the different types of containers. The explanation of the diagram does not go into detail about

This is the sigil that represents the City of London, which is the inner and distinct city, similar to the
relationship of Vatican City and Rome. There are two important things about this fact: the first being
that the City of London is the epicenter for international trade and commerce and the relationship
between commerce and the picture indicates that the cargo is inspected there. The City of London is
the area in London where commerce and trade were negotiated; this is in part due to its own tax
system that tries to incentivize working their; the museum included the detailed sigil then to
demonstrate the importance of commerce on the City of London. Another reason this sigil is
included is because, until the 19th century, The Port of London handled all shipping. The creators of
the diagram, then, wanted the museum goer to recognize the importance of commerce upon the City
of London by including this

The Structural Change Of The Inner City Job Market
The drastic reduction of stable manufacturing work in American cities remains one of the biggest, if
not the foremost, issue linked to poverty. The growth in blue–collar factory, transportation and
construction jobs that were traditionally held by men has dissipated for a variety of reasons, from
Globalization to the rise in Illegal Immigration. This structural change in the inner–city job market
is of particular interest because of the amalgamation of both Economics and Poverty/Segregation
issues. Without clearly defining and addressing this crucial structural issue, the war on poverty will
be extremely difficult to successfully address and overcome. It is difficult to overstate the extent to
which the reduction of traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The closure of big factories and the like ravished the Union industry, which had previously
negotiated rather lofty compensation deals with the corporations. Clerical jobs also garnered about
30% lower in wages, which added to the growing plight of poverty. Women traditionally staffed the
new clerical jobs and were aided with the rise in women's' rights. On the other hand, these men,
primarily African–American as will be discussed later, had almost no alternatives or any light at the
end of the tunnel, considering the many obstacles in their path adapting to the changing world. The
ethnic group affected most by this structural shift in job market is African Americans and played a
significant part in the continuation of their high poverty levels. The Great Migration in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries led to millions of Blacks moving North hoping for a better life and escaping
the cruel post–Civil war and Jim Crow environment in the South. As Massey writes, this led to the
formation of the black "Ghetto": highly concentrated black neighborhoods in many Northern cities.
Whilst today the Ghetto holds a negative connotation for some, it is important to note that Black
intellectuals like Booker T. Washington were actually in favor of creating such ghettos early on. In
their minds, the creation of independent, self–sustaining black neighborhoods would lead to
economic sustenance, a vibrant African–American culture a.k.a. "Harlem Renaissance",

The Negative Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification: Is it good or bad? The root meaning behind the word gentrification comes from the
Old French word "genterise" meaning "people of gentle birth". However, in the modern day,
gentrification can be defined in multiple ways such as "the process of renovating and improving a
house or district so that it conforms to middle–class taste" or "the process of wealthier residents
moving to an area, and the changes that occur due to the influx of wealth". In simple terms, the
concept behind gentrification refer to the change which a community goes from low value to high
value, however the effects of gentrification are far more complex. The positive impacts of
gentrification includes higher wages due to the boost of economy in the given area, more tax
revenues, and lower crime rates. The other end of the impacts of gentrification spectrum include the
displacement of long term residents and businesses due to higher rents, property values, mortgages,
and property taxes, as well as shifting of the community's culture and characteristics. Gentrification
has been a controversial topic and it has a significant impact on the social, economic and
demographic changes in the communities specifically in the modern day today. This raises the
question of, is gentrification good or a bad? The basic causations of gentrification can be explained
in three basic categories: the supply–side factor, demand–side factor, and policy factors. The
supply–side factor theory entails the various

Vandalization Of Graffiti
For several decades, graffiti has been a subject of great contention. Is it art that should be
appreciated? Or is it vandalism that must be condemned? Semantics aside, what can be definitively
agreed upon is that graffiti is an urban phenomenon and that its many manifestations are unique in
their own ways. The urban landscape that is the canvas for graffiti artists and taggers houses some of
society's most problematic factors, such as socioeconomic disparities, power struggles, political
unrest, and a sense of isolation. For some communities and individuals, these social stratifications
and feelings of detachment have led to their use of graffiti as an outlet to express their urban
realities. To understand the communal usages of graffiti, there must first be an understanding of
which communities are frequently using graffiti and what factors of city life are the causation. Often
times when people think of graffiti, gang graffiti is one of the first forms that come to mind.
However, in order to analyze gang graffiti, it should be questioned as to why there are even urban
gangs in the first place. Many gangs reside in impoverished inner city communities and as such they
are subject to substandard housing, poor education, high rates of substance abuse, and violent crime
(Marcionis and Parillo 2013:277). In order to cope with their troubled lives, "residents of high
poverty urban neighborhoods [will] by necessity form network links to survive" (212) and gangs are
one of these network links. Additionally, Marcionis and Parillo find that in lower economic
communities, the "collective sharing of tangibles and non–tangibles is an important coping strategy"
(212) in managing their disenfranchised lives, and gangs will, at times, provide both tangible and
non–tangible resources via money, physical protection, shared values, and kinship. In gangs, there is
also evidence of modern gemeinschafts and mechanical solidarities, given their provision of kinship,
sharing of resources, and protection for urbanites that feel largely marginalized by those with power
(123). Like the gemeinschafts and mechanical solidarities of old, gangs are close knit communities
with in group–out group mentalities and are what Gans

Role Expectations: Out In The Night By Nikki Jones
There are mainstream role expectations that our society deems fit for every individual. When
individuals don't follow what society sees as the norm it can cause tension. The use of Nikki Jones'
book, between good and Ghetto: African American Girls and Inner City Violence helps depict the
reality of black women and violence in inner cities. Examining this text and applying it to the film
Out in the Night can start to show how the medias depiction of the women in Out in the Night
heavily relies on the hetero–normative narratives that many people hold in today's society, instead of
the harsh reality that is seen throughout Jones's book. The use of intersectionality and role

Being excluded forced them to find other individuals that are similar to them so that they could be
open about their true identity with the knowledge that they are in a secure environment. In the film
Out in the Night (2014), the young women were walking down a street a man catcalled to one of the
girls, fulfilling a gendered role that society sees as normal, or enduring. When the girls explained
they were lesbian, violating their role expectations, the man started using explicit and derogatory
language toward them about their race and sexuality. The women used violence for their protection,
and to assert a position in society. The fact that they're black is the reason that the media depicted
them as demonizing individuals. The criminalization of black individuals and more specifically
female black individuals shapes the mind of society. The media twisted the story dehumanizing
these women by describing them as a " violent pack of lesbians" (Doroshwalther 2014) like they
were a pack of animals. Not only did the media turn them into animals but it also alluded to the idea
that they were acting in a violent manner because they were black lesbians who were upset that a

petunias, marigolds, and many more were reborn in her paintings. O'Keeffe wasn't happy because
people looked at her paintings and tried to see them in the way of a female. She said, "Well––I made
you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all
your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and

she painted the way she did because she was a female. She painted that way because that was how
she saw things. The flowers that she created epitomize her growth, success, magnetism, and energy
at that certain stage in her career. Her choice to paint these flowers was influenced by her early
training, natural attraction to flowers, and the idea of something fresh and fragile.
Close observations of O'Keeffe's flowers show that she never really pursued the realistic approach.
She didn't paint every petal and detail. Instead she gave her flowers a life of their own, and

One of the ways that youths in inner cities find stability in their unsafe neighborhoods is by
following the code of the street and "campaigning for respect on the street– asserting their
masculinity, confidence, and social status through posturing and fighting." (Harding 2010:29). An
example of this pressure to follow this code of the street can be seen in the fourth season of The
Wire. In one of the first episodes of the season, after walking out of Cutty's gym, Namond Brice is
met by a wild–eyed Sharrod, who tells Namond that he needs to "back off" his corner. Not wanting

Comparison Between Tombstone Blues And Desolation Row
If members of the folk establishment felt conflicted by Dylan's success, they would soon be enraged
by his break out performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, in which he "ushered in the era
of folk rock." Despite lyrical genius, folk music had been unable to touch the "primal urges"
released through rock and roll, inhibiting the genre from reaching a mass audience. Dylan combined
folk with rock in a way that brought the best traits in each to bear. He filled rock's lyrical vacuum
with "Tombstone Blues" and "Desolation Row," among others. "Tombstone Blues" infuses an
exciting rock and roll beat with surreal lyrics that maintain Dylan's individualism. "Desolation Row"

Dylan explained his 1965 transition in an interview that same year, explaining to reporter Charles
Champlin that "songs aren't gonna save the world." He goes on to dispel the notion that he is a
teacher or a leader, even going so far as to reject labels like 'poet.' Frustrated with pop–culture's
"simple minded political commitment," he "makes a shambles of it." "Desolation Row" demands
listeners question the significance of which side one is on, when we are all sitting aboard the sinking
Titanic. No longer enacting change through his art, Dylan now satirizes any who are naive enough
to believe they can save the world. The satire appears mainly directed at elites who "intellectualized
their commitment [to far away 'folks'] without having true feelings." During the later portion of the
1960's, Dylan turned his back on

Essay about Timeless Work: an Analysis of Marvin Gaye
Timeless Work: An Analysis of Marvin Gaye Marvin Gaye grew up surrounded by the art of music.
Born in the nations capital on April 2, 1939, Gaye's ageless sounds and intriguing vocals still
influence the world today. Gaye's father, a minister in the Apostolic Church, played a foremost role
in Marvin's musical education. In fact, most of Marvin's inspiration for religious topics came from
the church music he grew up singing. Through the art of song, musical icon Marvin Gaye uses
pathos, symbolism, and imagery with an objective to connect to listeners on tremendously personal
levels. Marvin Gaye's first hit "What's Going On?" makes use of symbolism in his general topic

It also pleads to let the people have their outlooks and views with out concern of being quieted or
attacked. In the song "Mercy, Mercy Me", imagery and symbolism exist as two key archetypes that
draw out the elements of pathos in Gaye's lyrics. The 1960's environmentalist, also known as
Hippies, opened America's eyes and revealed the gruesome lack of respect they exhibited towards
the Earth. Ignorant Americans used the planet as a dumping ground, unaware of the catastrophic
outcomes. Gaye wrote "Mercy, Mercy Me" from an environmentalists perspective and depicts a
devastating portrayal of mans unconstructive impact on the Earth using imagery. The imagery used
in "Mercy, Mercy Me" makes the mind ponder on how Gaye attempts to convince listeners to take a
more philosophical approach to life that emphasizes respect for others and the earth. He illustrates
the contamination of oceans and murder of marine life that remains a result of man's carelessness. A
decade before, these issues were not relevant to the Earth "Oh things ain't what they used to be", as
Gaye points out in "Mercy, Mercy Me". For example, in the 1960's countries began to industrialize
rapidly, which only meant additional factories and buildings resulting in excessive pollution in the
atmosphere. Gaye also uses the archetype symbolism in this quote: "Animals and birds who live
nearby are dying."(Gaye)

The Beat Movement And Kerouac's On The Road
The beat movement is expressed the social and literary nonconformity of artists, poets, and writers.
The word beat originally meant "weary" but came to refer as well to a musical beat. Followers of
this movement, called beats or beatniks, lived nonconformist lives. They tended to shun regular
work and sought a higher consciousness through Zen Buddhism, music, and, sometimes, drugs.
Works that capture the essence of this era include Allen Ginsberg's long, free verse poem, Howl,
published in 1956, and Jack Kerouac's novel of the movement, On the Road, published in 1957.
Alan Freed's listeners responded enthusiastically, and Freed began promoting the new music that
grew out of rhythm and blues and country and pop. He called the music rock 'n' roll. In the early and
mid–1950s, Richard Penniman, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and His Comets, and especially Elvis
Presley brought rock 'n' roll to a frantic pitch of popularity among the newly affluent teens who
bought their records. Elvis Presley, the unofficial "King of Rock 'n' Roll," first developed his
musical style by singing in church and listening to gospel, country, and blues music on the radio in
Memphis, Tennessee. Not surprisingly, many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One proposed solution to the housing problem in inner cities was urban renewal. The National
Housing Act of 1949 was passed to provide "a decent home and a suitable living environment for

Hip Hop's Negative Influence On Teen Decision-Making
Hip Hop changes lives, but not the way you are told to believe. The media false advertises that
music is the main stimulus for bad decision making and ultimately for violence. Teens are
influenced by many different factors with each factor dictating a percentage of their decision
making. Majority of the time these factors are unavoidable. Factors such as environment, family,
and music are key to the teens decision making. Hip–hop is believed to have a huge negative impact
on teens decision–making and we are to blame for this false allegation. In the 1980s inner cities
were filled with the notorious crack epidemic and they experienced poverty on a larger scale than
ever before. President Ronald Reagan cut down on social services benefiting people in low
socioeconomic classes, primarily black Americans(Sebhatu). During these hard times those people

There is increasing evidence that poverty, unemployment and social stress are all now seen in
British Inner Cities. There are
many problems which the areas face, both physically and even in some cases mentally:
1.the physical fabric of the buildings, many originally built using cheap materials and methods, is
deteriorating rapidly.
However the councils are trying to upgrade these poor housing conditions gradually.
2.Many inner city areas include high rise buildings which have created feelings or isolation and
stress related illnesses.
3.The low level or car ownership and high bus fares have increased the feeling of isolation from
jobs, shops and
entertainment.
4.Levels of unemployment often exceed 30%. There are also low income families; many elderly
living on small pensions.
5.The environment quality of the areas are poor, often with the lack of open space.

Roles Of Gentrification In The 20th Century
Gentrification is most easily understood as occurring in various stages. During the 1950s, 60s and
70s, public subsidies and "urban renewal" altered many large cities as sporadic reinvestment battled
increasing flight from the inner city to the suburbs. The second significant surge occurred in the
post–recession 1970s, encouraged by public–private partnerships and assimilation into national and
global economic and cultural developments. At last, in the 1990s, gentrification swelled with rising
urban housing markets and increasing capital investment. After World War II, American residents
started moving in immense groups to quickly growing suburban neighborhoods. The government
encouraged this crusade by providing veterans returning home with incentives to purchase housing
in new suburban neighborhoods that began to circle around the inner cities, and unprecedented new
construction generated an overwhelming inventory of suburban homes available for sale. Together,
these new realities made the American Dream of a lawn and white picket fence available to large
swaths of the population in a way it simply had not been in pre–War cities. By 1960, twenty–five
percent of United States citizens resided in newly populated suburban communities on the outskirts
of large urban centers. The movement caused a "systemic outmigration" from inner cities, mainly by
middle–and upper–class families who had the financial means necessary to buy into this novel idea
of the American Dream.

The Gentrification Theory: Ruth Glass Essay
The Gentrification Theory: A Brief Description.
Since Ruth Glass first coined the term back in 1964, in order to explain the forced displacement of
low–income groups from the inner city areas (Lees et.al, 2008), gentrification has been one of the
most popular theories discussed among social and urban specialists.
The initial hypothesis states that gentrification is a process lead by middle to high–income people,
generally represented under the tags of young families with managerial jobs, real estate investment
firms, or the rise of the cognitive–cultural entrepreneur class (Scott, 2008). It starts with the partial
integration of these groups in lower– income inner–city neighbourhoods. The settlement of these
higher income classes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Testing Gentrification Outside the Western Context: The Case of Latin America.
Starting with Ruth Glass' first case study in Islington, London, exposing the displacement of the
working class, evidenced with the arrival of middle class groups, gentrification has been tested
throughout the western developed countries with results that vary across. However, the theory's
main convictions are still part of the proven results.
However, testing gentrification outside the western contexts requires special attention over factors
that differ from these classic contexts where the phenomenon has been studied. We know, for
instance, that the Latin American context not only differs in cultural codes, but also in the general
structure of its society and the ways in which low, middle and high income groups may be defined
across its diverse countries and how global economy pressures have affected each context. But first,
why would we talk about gentrification in Latin America?
Gentrification is not a phenomenon aisled to the western developed countries, but also to those
contexts that have experienced an unprecedented economic growth, encompassed by the process of
globalisation (Inzulza, 2011). The case of Latin America does not only follow the patterns of the
global economy, but has also inherited the urban legacy of countries of Europe and the US, where
traces of old inner–city areas are structured in similar ways, presenting common scenarios which

Social Bond Theory
Through the evolution of social bonds, individuals have always been under scrutiny to abide by a
list of rules in order to be successful in their community. This ideology is made evident in the book,
The Code of the Street, by Elijah Anderson. Anderson dissects and exposes the various issues
dealing with families in urban minority communities. These families are labeled as "street" and
"decent". The connotation of the term "code of the street" is a set of accepted and understood set of
rules in which "street" and "decent" families abide by in order to function in modern–day street
society. These regulatory rules are known as a "code" because this term is not blatantly stated, but
mutually understood by those living in these disadvantaged communities. ... Show more content on

Aker's social learning theory is evident in Anderson's research in Code of the Street. Aker explains
that the social learning theory attributes learning criminal behavior through the engagement of peers.
This theory can be practical in understanding the "code of the streets" of minorities in urban
communities. Modern society has put a label on crime in that it is inappropriate and that people
should not participate in it. However, those in disadvantaged communities who abide by the code of
the street allow the denotation of crime to change in their attempts to survive in such conditions.
Anderson states, "Children growing up in these circumstances learn early in life that this [criminal
activities] is the way things are" (Anderson 134). This mindset is common to those in minority
urban communities that portray the code of the street in terms of crime in the eyes of the

Inner Cities And Its Impact On Society Essay
America has had an extensive relationship with her inner cities. Inner cities were and are the
backbone to America and her achievements. The cities assisted in the mass production of the
automobile industry, the destruction of the tyranny known as the Nazi Empire, and are the center
piece for businesses today. The inner cities had a reduction in employment during the 2008 financial
crisis, leaving the cities and their inhabitants in shambles. This not only affected jobs and parents,
but the children as well. This was unfortunate because the cities that built America were now spilt
into two parts. One part became an area of bustling traffic and lively people, the other
underprivileged individuals with no source of income due to financial collapse of their places of
employment. Inner city children face an abundant number of obstacles in their lives being raised in
these low–income areas. These areas have become poverty–stricken and are being ignored by the
government. Without assistance, whether from the state or the federal level of government, certain
factors of their lives are being neglected. Some of the factors that are detrimental to the children are
the inadequate educational programs, lack of attendance at school, and parent involvement, lack of
availability of nutritional produce and a higher rate of exposure to crime.

Confessions Of A Bad Teacher Summary
Having read 'Confessions of a Bad Teacher' by John Owens, I was amazed at the overall condition
of the inner city school Latinate that he taught in many different ways. I never observed or went to
an inner city school, and I always heard stories from my mom about how teaching in the city is one
of the most difficult jobs a person could have. After reading this book, I now believe this statement
even more. Mr. Owens had to manage all of the nuances that make up a traditional classroom
ranging from having good lesson structure, having a good classroom environment and management,
and having good instructional strategies. In addition to fulfilling these big challenges, Mr. Owens
also has to deal with numerous cultural differences in the classroom, many additional instructional
demands as imposed by the principal Ms. P, and lack of family and community support from
families and members of Latinate. While Latinate is located in the heart of the Bronx in New York
City, it is a school that promises a college preparatory program while using the latest technological

The Newspeak Language
George Orwell's novel 1984 paints a disturbing picture about perpetual power through the future
perspective of 1980's Oceania. Several types of people live in this alternate universe including
proles, Outer Party, and Inner Party. Winston Smith, the protagonist, works in the media in order to
rewrite history using a new language, Newspeak. Ingsoc, the party, uses subtle distinction in order to
control the people with Newspeak by limiting vocabulary, which reduces the ability to make

Big Brother and the Inner party reduced words from their vocabulary like "bad" and replaced them
with "ungood" or for an even worse description, "double–ungood or doubleplus–ungood." Winston's
job, thought of as a historian by some, was to burn the books containing these words. By using the
slogans of slogans of, "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery" and "Ignorance is Strength", the party
eliminates all words that describe rebelling; in order to stop the people from doing so. Any person
who is fluent in only the language of Newspeak will not even know what rebelling means. Orwell
describes Julia and the party by saying, "In some ways she was far more acute than Winston, and far
less susceptible to the Party (153)". This shows that Julia is way less likely to fall to the claims of
the party than Winston is. The most important phrase is "Freedom is Slavery" because it keeps the
Outer Party ignorant of the message that is being pushed out to and controlling them. Because of
this slogan, the Inner Party can spread any kind of information, true or false, and the Outer Party
would believe it because people lack the reasoning power to understand

Gentrification, By Ruth Glass
The term "Gentrification" was coined by British sociologist Ruth Glass in 1964 to describe the
influx of the middle class displacing lower class worker residents in urban neighbourhoods; her
example was London, and its working class who resided in the London Borough of Islington. The
term was published in Ruth Glass' book 'London: aspects of change' she stated that 'One by one,
many of the working class neighbourhoods of London have been invaded by the middle–classes–
upper and lower.' she also claimed that 'Once this process of 'gentrification ' starts in a district it goes
on rapidly, until all or most of the original working–class occupiers are displaced and the whole
social character of the district is changed.' Gentrification is a multifaceted phenomenon which has
been defined differently over the years, there is no concrete definition. Before we look at whether
Gentrification is actually damaging the lower class society, we must first focus on the causes of
Gentrification and then we may proceed to look at its effects. Many sociologist have tried to explain
the roots and the reasons for the existence of Gentrification and why it is spreading. Sociologists
Bruce London and J. John Palen came up with a list of five explanations these were: demographic–
ecological, socio–cultural, political–economical, community networks, and social movements.
These explanations were published in a book in 1984 called 'Gentrification, Displacement, and

Color Symbolism In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
Colors have a large impact on society. They have the ability to affect people's moods, appetites, and
behaviors. Colors also have the ability to act as symbols. For example, the color white often acts as
a symbol of innocence, and the color yellow often represents happiness. Throughout the book The
Great Gatsby, multiple colors symbolize different aspects of Jay Gatsby's life. In particular, the color
blue symbolizes the disappointment in his life. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the color blue to act as a
symbol of the disillusioned, lonely lifestyle Jay Gatsby lives. The appearance of the color blue in
certain aspects of Gatsby's life reveals Gatsby's inner loneliness. In the beginning of the book,
Gatsby throws large, extravagant parties at his house in hopes that Daisy will arrive. Fitzgerald
writes, "In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the
champagne and the stars" (Fitzgerald 43). Gatsby's gardens, colored blue, stand to reflect the true
mood of Gatsby at his parties. Although he threw lively parties, Gatsby did not partake in them

I think about asset mapping, the difference between faith based and faith rooted organizations and

I thought that I had a monopoly on the characterization of urban. Especially, considering that I was

Urban is typically an inner city primarily filled with black and Latino residents. Most often times
these are impoverished neighborhoods. Urban can also be seen as the first ring of suburban
neighborhoods filled with those who have been affected by gentrification . Large clusters of people
living in poverty stricken communities, with a lack of adequate resources or unused resources could
very well describe what urban means. But urban is not all lack of flourishing neighborhoods. In

Analysis Of ' The Dream On Isolation ' By Laurence Ralph...
Renegade Dreams on Isolation Introduction In Laurence Ralph's Renegade Dreams, the citizens in
Eastwood are susceptible to isolation due the physical injuries and social injuries. My main
argument is, the physical injuries and social injuries have impacted their daily lives and have made
some residents isolated from others around them. The theme of isolation plays a role in throughout
the book as the residents use isolation to motivate themselves and pursue their dreams. This dream is
curated from different residents such as Justin Cone, Blizzard, and the gangs (Divine Knights). In
the essay, the topics covered are the stories of the characters and the context of isolation in
motivating residents to achieve their dreams. This idea can be explained through the ethnographic
data, in text citations, and the stories of the characters. Conceptual conversation The theoretical
conversation Ralph explores in the book is isolation. He draws ideas from Wacqaunt and Wilson's

is an interrelated set of characteristics that corresponds to social–structural problems in the inner city

Overcoming Spatial Mismatch in Buying a Home
As any good realtor will say, there are three main important factors to remember when buying or
renting a piece of property: "location, location, location". Oftentimes, the location of ones home will
have some of the biggest impacts on their lives. Since we live in a capitalist society where work is
key to survival, location has a major affect on work. The importance of location can become a
problem when work and the rest of one's life become separate. Before the industrial revolution,
work and the house were intertwined with both activities taking place in the same location.
However, after the industrial revolution, work was moved outside the home and into the factory.
Though our current society is not structured around factories, the physical location of the workplace
remains separated from the home. This can lead to conflicts between where someone lives,
sometimes without much of a choice, and the work available. The crux of this is the Spatial
Mismatch theory which is the idea that the economic restructuring that has taken place in the past
decades has lead to the loss of work opportunities for low–income and minority workers due to
work being moved away from where they live. Economic restructuring such as deindustrialization
has moved many jobs away from the city and urban setting and into the suburbs where low–income
and minority workers may not have an opportunity to live. In addition to the movement of jobs, the
importance of transportation, both private and public,

Can You Understand "The Message"?
Can You Understand The Message? Dating back to the times of slavery, the black community in
America has historically used music as a vehicle for self–expression and introspection. The blues
was the original form of musical self–expression, and was conceived from "field hollering", the
melodious manner in which slaves working the fields and forests aired out grievances and gave their
opinions on their present situation. The use of music for communal empowerment and expression of
self within the black community is still seen today, but is seen in the more contemporary genre of
hip–hop music which originated in the early 70s in the New York Inner City. Grandmaster Flash is
credited with being one of the original pioneers of the hip–hop ... Show more content on

Many inner city dwellers are often physically, socially, and economically trapped to the confines of
their living situation. Lack of financial stability in the inner city prevents many residents from
improving their situation, and in effect leaves an entire community socially and economically
stagnant and living with "rats in the front room, roaches in the back/junkie's in the alley with a
baseball bat." In the author's case, one shared by countless other inner city residents, the ability to
even catch a breather from the depressing sites and life of the inner city is not even feasible due to
lack of transportation. Another image that Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five portray is a
"crazy lady livin' in a bad/Eatin' out of garbage pails, she used to be a fag–hag." While this image
serves as another reinforcement of poverty in the ghetto, it also brings to light the plight of a single
woman in the ghetto. The crazy lady, Grandmaster Flash explains, used to be a dancer however at
some stage in her life "she went to the city and got Social Security/She had to get a pimp, she
couldn't make it on her own." Through the anecdote of the "crazy lady," Grandmaster Flash
demonstrates the realities of life for a poor, single woman trying to

Peepholes Sociology

  • 1. Peepholes Sociology In "NY State of Mind," Nas talks about the desolate conditions of living in the New York inner city streets as a poor black man, plagued with harassing police, gang violence, and drugs. This is described specifically when NAS, who helped to "reintroduce New York hip hop in the gangsta era," describes "bullet holes left in my peepholes" referencing the shootings that have become normalized in these areas (Orejuela, 2015, pg. 146). "Peepholes" is a homophone for people, specifically referring people he personally knows, such as friends or family, with the use of the personal pronoun "my" in the first person context. However, Nas does not become of victim of this violence, but instead threatens retaliation when he says "hand me a 9 and I'll defeat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This aspect of hip hop culture became so engrained within "codes of behavior, secret gathering places, slang, and aesthetic standards," and thus had the most racially ethnic artists, which is why these people were mostly targeted by police for these actions. Taki 183's graffiti was an act of political resistance against the "cleaning up" of New York City streets, which was a euphemism for whitening these neighborhoods economically and physically, with the displacement of poor, people of color. Specifically, his work is called tagging because the artist is "making his or her presence known and proclaiming his or her identity through a unique mark" (Orejuela, 2015, pg. 17). The artist of this graffiti artwork, and others like it were also a blatant display by people of color peacefully fighting back the state for its intended demise and who at the time, spent thousands of dollars to rid the streets of these pieces of artwork because of its direct connection to people of color. This work of resistance was so successful because other graffiti artists would try to compete with Taki 183's work and thus, they too would create their own piece of work. This then made it almost impossible for the city to paint over every piece of work, but this also made it more dangerous for the artists themselves, as the penalties for graffiti became even more severe as people of color became even more policed. This artist specifically, made this artwork most popular as he performed it during such a tense time and received major exposure by the New York media. Phase 2 was infamous for creating bubble writing, also known as softies, but was also a b–boy. He also rapped and graffitied during the 1970s when the state of New York was in a war with the residents of color and the lower class. Phase 2 art is referred to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Crime And Its Effects On Urban Areas Crime is a familiar and perilous concern in American society, and crime damages the foundation of this America. The ongoing population shift from rural to urban areas has helped to facilitate crime in the United States through the decades. Showing the focused element and impact of crime in society and the consequence of crime in urban areas, is to better understand the people, and knowing that when criminals know the procedures of the crime they get new opportunity to do it. Examining the crimes can give insight into who and why, but there are many extenuating circumstances which need to be factored. Urbanization has given opportunity and capability for the criminal element to thrive. Criminal activities are an onus for any nation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Department of Homeland Security 2017) Race will be defined as white and non–white. Crime also needs to be defined as "white collar" or "blue collar", this allows for differentiation between who is committing which types of crime. the Letric Law Library defines white and blue collar crime as, "Blue–collar crime is a term given to criminal acts more likely to be committed by citizens of lower social class in society, such as those which inflict direct harm on the person or property of others. This is in contrast to white–collar crime, which is generally committed by citizens of higher social class, who are more likely to be presented with the opportunity to commit such crimes." (Blue Collar Crime). Blue collar crimes are more likely to be of a violent nature and committed by people in a lower economic position. Although White collar crime can be extremely harmful, it is not generally physical, or physically damaging and for the most part committed by people of a higher social status. For the purposes of this paper, blue collar crime as it has been defined will be the focus. Urban crime is being committed at a higher rate than rural crime, according to National Crime Vitim's Survey, "In 2012, the rate of violent victimizations reported by victims to the NCVS was 3,240 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or older in urban areas, 2,380 per 100,000 persons' age 12 or older in suburban areas, and 2,090 per 100,000 ... • 5. Essay about Recycling Wealth in the Inner City Recycling Wealth in the Inner City INTRODUCTION The modern story of developed areas is a move from the inner city to the suburbs. This decentralization of metropolitan areas has left urban areas neglected. Such a transformation has had negative consequences, because it has inherently meant the abandonment of those left behind in urban centers. Furthermore, the issue is complicated by the fact that the distinction between those moving to the suburbs and those left behind has been defined largely by race. As Kain notes, "the means by which racial segregation in housing has been maintained are amply documented. They are both legal and extra–legal; for example: racial covenants; racial zoning; violence or threats of violence; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There must be efforts to counteract the movement towards the suburbs, and programs aimed at rebuilding the inner city. Ideally, the end result might be transforming the inner city black ghettos into thriving black business districts through investing and directing resources back towards urban centers. HISTORY In terms of considering the potential for rebuilding the inner city and creating a thriving district of concentrated black Americans, it is important to note that such an ideal is not as unprecedented as one might be led to believe. . A history of concentrations of Black economic activity would be incomplete without mention of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the once thriving African American business district that existed there. In the early part of the 20th century, northern Tulsa was home to a 36–block district dubbed "Black Wall Street" and while it was not actually a center for financial trading it was a prospering business center. Tulsa was home to Black physicians, attorneys, and scholars. One doctor, for example, Dr. Berry, owned the bus system and was known to make incomes of $500 a day. Unfortunately, the success of Tulsa came to a dramatic halt when the aftermath of a race riot concluded with the area even being bombed from the air by the National Guard (www.blackwallstreet.org). Marvin Gaye's Song 'Inner City Blues' "Inner City Blues" "Inner City Blues," short for "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" is a song written by, the pop/R&B classic, Marvin Gaye and James Nyx Jr. This song was released as the third and final single from the compelling song of his 1971 milestone album, "What's Going On." In this song, Gaye talks about poverty and hopelessness in the ghetto urban places of the 1960's. Many of Gaye's songs contain political and social issues; "Inner City Blues" is great melody that depicts the political injustice seen during the Vietnam War. • 9. The Inner City Of Los Angeles Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles taught me many things; make sure you're inside before the street lights come on, never wear all red or blue, and make sure you get a good education so that one day you can leave the inner city behind. I was fortunate enough to have both a mother and a father who stressed the importance of excelling academically because attending an inner city, LA county, public school did not instill a love of academics in myself or my peers. Our teachers had checked out, the curriculum was not inspiring or relatable, and everyday there was yet another fight happening during recess. As time went on I witnessed my classmates and I take completely different paths. The strong support system I had at home proved effective. As I went on to go to college, many of my peers dropped out, the dismal state of our public school system had clearly failed them. During my undergraduate studies, the stories of my old classmates did not leave my mind. I remained deeply intrigued with the struggles of inner city people of color and the mobility they are granted. I began to volunteer at ArtStart, a non profit program that taught previously incarcerated youth the art of poetry, and I was immediately intrigued by the stories of what had led these children to a life of crime at such a young age. In these students, I saw my childhood friends who had went down the same path many years before and I wanted to know why; where did the disconnect between the school system ... That is why bars particularly have become a popular attraction for college students to migrate to after a long week of classes. Stress from the syllabi and the eagerness to socialize are factors in the motivation getting college students out and about. My curiosity as a college student myself, has led me to study other college students' behavior when they go to bars and "distress" from arduous schoolwork. In my research, I observe and compare how students behave in a bar setting in two different locations: West Hartford, Connecticut and Charleston, South Carolina. Michael Porter's The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City The essay "The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City" by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city have failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the city as a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because they treated the inner city as an "isolated island" (317), separated from surrounding economy which favored local small business that did not bring in outside business. Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also elected into. He is known as the "c" and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and company strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition and economic development. Some of his most influential books include Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value–Based Competition On Results. In the essay, "The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City," Porter explained the reason that numerous past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due to the increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to create real change, we have to start with the notion that inner–city businesses should not only be profitable but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Many would think that a business in the inner–city would not thrive because business prosperity depends on location, however, it also varies on the way a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Victorian London The diagram is a depiction of loading a skipper, a small boat designed to deposit and withdraw cargo from a large ship able to traverse large sea, whilst navy officers, distinguished by their blue coats, are recording the results. I picked this diagram to use and relate to commerce, because the strength in London trading lied in several aspects that are represented in the presentation. This has clear implications and can be used to give analysis on commerce in Victorian London. In order to demonstrate this, I would like to focus on three specific objects, and how each of them relate to commerce, within the diagram: the containers that are being loaded, the sigil in the middle of the picture, and the officers in the picture. The City of London is the area in London where commerce and trade were negotiated; this is in part due to its own tax system that tries to incentivize working their; the museum included the detailed sigil then to demonstrate the importance of commerce on the City of London. The Structural Change Of The Inner City Job Market The drastic reduction of stable manufacturing work in American cities remains one of the biggest, if not the foremost, issue linked to poverty. The growth in blue–collar factory, transportation and construction jobs that were traditionally held by men has dissipated for a variety of reasons, from Globalization to the rise in Illegal Immigration. This structural change in the inner–city job market is of particular interest because of the amalgamation of both Economics and Poverty/Segregation issues. On the other hand, these men, primarily African–American as will be discussed later, had almost no alternatives or any light at the end of the tunnel, considering the many obstacles in their path adapting to the changing world. The ethnic group affected most by this structural shift in job market is African Americans and played a significant part in the continuation of their high poverty levels. The Great Migration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to millions of Blacks moving North hoping for a better life and escaping the cruel post–Civil war and Jim Crow environment in the South. As Massey writes, this led to the formation of the black "Ghetto": highly concentrated black neighborhoods in many Northern cities. Whilst today the Ghetto holds a negative connotation for some, it is important to note that Black intellectuals like Booker T. Washington were actually in favor of creating such ghettos early on. • 21. The Negative Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification: Is it good or bad? The root meaning behind the word gentrification comes from the Old French word "genterise" meaning "people of gentle birth". However, in the modern day, gentrification can be defined in multiple ways such as "the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle–class taste" or "the process of wealthier residents moving to an area, and the changes that occur due to the influx of wealth". In simple terms, the concept behind gentrification refer to the change which a community goes from low value to high value, however the effects of gentrification are far more complex. The positive impacts of gentrification includes higher wages due to the boost of economy in the given area, more tax revenues, and lower crime rates. The other end of the impacts of gentrification spectrum include the displacement of long term residents and businesses due to higher rents, property values, mortgages, and property taxes, as well as shifting of the community's culture and characteristics. Gentrification has been a controversial topic and it has a significant impact on the social, economic and demographic changes in the communities specifically in the modern day today. This raises the question of, is gentrification good or a bad? The basic causations of gentrification can be explained in three basic categories: the supply–side factor, demand–side factor, and policy factors. • 23. Vandalization Of Graffiti For several decades, graffiti has been a subject of great contention. Is it art that should be appreciated? Or is it vandalism that must be condemned? Semantics aside, what can be definitively agreed upon is that graffiti is an urban phenomenon and that its many manifestations are unique in their own ways. The urban landscape that is the canvas for graffiti artists and taggers houses some of society's most problematic factors, such as socioeconomic disparities, power struggles, political unrest, and a sense of isolation. For some communities and individuals, these social stratifications and feelings of detachment have led to their use of graffiti as an outlet to express their urban realities. To understand the communal usages of graffiti, there must first be an understanding of which communities are frequently using graffiti and what factors of city life are the causation. Often times when people think of graffiti, gang graffiti is one of the first forms that come to mind. However, in order to analyze gang graffiti, it should be questioned as to why there are even urban gangs in the first place. Many gangs reside in impoverished inner city communities and as such they are subject to substandard housing, poor education, high rates of substance abuse, and violent crime (Marcionis and Parillo 2013:277). In order to cope with their troubled lives, "residents of high poverty urban neighborhoods [will] by necessity form network links to survive" (212) and gangs are one of these network links. Additionally, Marcionis and Parillo find that in lower economic communities, the "collective sharing of tangibles and non–tangibles is an important coping strategy" (212) in managing their disenfranchised lives, and gangs will, at times, provide both tangible and non–tangible resources via money, physical protection, shared values, and kinship. In gangs, there is also evidence of modern gemeinschafts and mechanical solidarities, given their provision of kinship, sharing of resources, and protection for urbanites that feel largely marginalized by those with power (123). Like the gemeinschafts and mechanical solidarities of old, gangs are close knit communities with in group–out group mentalities and are what Gans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When individuals don't follow what society sees as the norm it can cause tension. The use of Nikki Jones' book, between good and Ghetto: African American Girls and Inner City Violence helps depict the reality of black women and violence in inner cities. Examining this text and applying it to the film Out in the Night can start to show how the medias depiction of the women in Out in the Night heavily relies on the hetero–normative narratives that many people hold in today's society, instead of the harsh reality that is seen throughout Jones's book. Being excluded forced them to find other individuals that are similar to them so that they could be open about their true identity with the knowledge that they are in a secure environment. In the film Out in the Night (2014), the young women were walking down a street a man catcalled to one of the girls, fulfilling a gendered role that society sees as normal, or enduring. When the girls explained they were lesbian, violating their role expectations, the man started using explicit and derogatory language toward them about their race and sexuality. The women used violence for their protection, and to assert a position in society. The fact that they're black is the reason that the media depicted them as demonizing individuals. The criminalization of black individuals and more specifically female black individuals shapes the mind of society. The media twisted the story dehumanizing these women by describing them as a " violent pack of lesbians" (Doroshwalther 2014) like they were a pack of animals. Not only did the media turn them into animals but it also alluded to the idea that they were acting in a violent manner because they were black lesbians who were upset that a man hit on them. The second significant surge occurred in the post–recession 1970s, encouraged by public–private partnerships and assimilation into national and global economic and cultural developments. At last, in the 1990s, gentrification swelled with rising urban housing markets and increasing capital investment. After World War II, American residents started moving in immense groups to quickly growing suburban neighborhoods. The government encouraged this crusade by providing veterans returning home with incentives to purchase housing in new suburban neighborhoods that began to circle around the inner cities, and unprecedented new construction generated an overwhelming inventory of suburban homes available for sale. Together, these new realities made the American Dream of a lawn and white picket fence available to large swaths of the population in a way it simply had not been in pre–War cities. By 1960, twenty–five percent of United States citizens resided in newly populated suburban communities on the outskirts of large urban centers. The movement caused a "systemic outmigration" from inner cities, mainly by middle–and upper–class families who had the financial means necessary to buy into this novel idea of the American Dream. ... • 50. The Gentrification Theory: Ruth Glass Essay The Gentrification Theory: A Brief Description. Since Ruth Glass first coined the term back in 1964, in order to explain the forced displacement of low–income groups from the inner city areas (Lees et.al, 2008), gentrification has been one of the most popular theories discussed among social and urban specialists. The initial hypothesis states that gentrification is a process lead by middle to high–income people, generally represented under the tags of young families with managerial jobs, real estate investment firms, or the rise of the cognitive–cultural entrepreneur class (Scott, 2008). It starts with the partial integration of these groups in lower– income inner–city neighbourhoods. The settlement of these higher income classes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Testing Gentrification Outside the Western Context: The Case of Latin America. Starting with Ruth Glass' first case study in Islington, London, exposing the displacement of the working class, evidenced with the arrival of middle class groups, gentrification has been tested throughout the western developed countries with results that vary across. However, the theory's main convictions are still part of the proven results. However, testing gentrification outside the western contexts requires special attention over factors that differ from these classic contexts where the phenomenon has been studied. We know, for instance, that the Latin American context not only differs in cultural codes, but also in the general structure of its society and the ways in which low, middle and high income groups may be defined across its diverse countries and how global economy pressures have affected each context. But first, why would we talk about gentrification in Latin America? Gentrification is not a phenomenon aisled to the western developed countries, but also to those contexts that have experienced an unprecedented economic growth, encompassed by the process of globalisation (Inzulza, 2011). The case of Latin America does not only follow the patterns of the global economy, but has also inherited the urban legacy of countries of Europe and the US, where traces of old inner–city areas are structured in similar ways, presenting common scenarios which may also be affected ... • 52. Social Bond Theory Through the evolution of social bonds, individuals have always been under scrutiny to abide by a list of rules in order to be successful in their community. This ideology is made evident in the book, The Code of the Street, by Elijah Anderson. Anderson dissects and exposes the various issues dealing with families in urban minority communities. These families are labeled as "street" and "decent". The connotation of the term "code of the street" is a set of accepted and understood set of rules in which "street" and "decent" families abide by in order to function in modern–day street society. These regulatory rules are known as a "code" because this term is not blatantly stated, but mutually understood by those living in these disadvantaged communities. ... Aker explains that the social learning theory attributes learning criminal behavior through the engagement of peers. This theory can be practical in understanding the "code of the streets" of minorities in urban communities. Modern society has put a label on crime in that it is inappropriate and that people should not participate in it. However, those in disadvantaged communities who abide by the code of the street allow the denotation of crime to change in their attempts to survive in such conditions. Anderson states, "Children growing up in these circumstances learn early in life that this [criminal activities] is the way things are" (Anderson 134). The song was written about inflation, financial, and tax troubles by most people within the inner cities. The song was written in the early 1970's but it is still true to see people struggle with the same problems. He references how money is made but before it's seen it's taken, this is referring to how a person's pay check is mostly consumed by taxes. Every day tax payers are the ones who earn a working wage to provide for themselves and their families. We the people are taxed in various ways not just through our paychecks but also when making purchases: food, clothing, some utilities, and we can continue naming more. • 56. Inner Cities And Its Impact On Society Essay America has had an extensive relationship with her inner cities. Inner cities were and are the backbone to America and her achievements. The cities assisted in the mass production of the automobile industry, the destruction of the tyranny known as the Nazi Empire, and are the center piece for businesses today. The inner cities had a reduction in employment during the 2008 financial crisis, leaving the cities and their inhabitants in shambles. This not only affected jobs and parents, but the children as well. This was unfortunate because the cities that built America were now spilt into two parts. One part became an area of bustling traffic and lively people, the other underprivileged individuals with no source of income due to financial collapse of their places of employment. Inner city children face an abundant number of obstacles in their lives being raised in these low–income areas. These areas have become poverty–stricken and are being ignored by the government. Without assistance, whether from the state or the federal level of government, certain factors of their lives are being neglected. Some of the factors that are detrimental to the children are the inadequate educational programs, lack of attendance at school, and parent involvement, lack of availability of nutritional produce and a higher rate of exposure to crime. The children in inner cities are demonstrating issues with attendance this is detrimental to success because missing days directly impacts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Confessions Of A Bad Teacher Summary Having read 'Confessions of a Bad Teacher' by John Owens, I was amazed at the overall condition of the inner city school Latinate that he taught in many different ways. I never observed or went to an inner city school, and I always heard stories from my mom about how teaching in the city is one of the most difficult jobs a person could have. After reading this book, I now believe this statement even more. Mr. Owens had to manage all of the nuances that make up a traditional classroom ranging from having good lesson structure, having a good classroom environment and management, and having good instructional strategies. In addition to fulfilling these big challenges, Mr. Owens also has to deal with numerous cultural differences in the classroom, many additional instructional demands as imposed by the principal Ms. P, and lack of family and community support from families and members of Latinate. While Latinate is located in the heart of the Bronx in New York City, it is a school that promises a college preparatory program while using the latest technological equipment to promote learning both inside and outside of the classroom. Requiring that all students pass these English classes without requiring them to show proficiency or even submit any work is absolutely insane. Winston's job, thought of as a historian by some, was to burn the books containing these words. By using the slogans of slogans of, "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery" and "Ignorance is Strength", the party eliminates all words that describe rebelling; in order to stop the people from doing so. Any person who is fluent in only the language of Newspeak will not even know what rebelling means. Orwell describes Julia and the party by saying, "In some ways she was far more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to the Party (153)". This shows that Julia is way less likely to fall to the claims of the party than Winston is. The most important phrase is "Freedom is Slavery" because it keeps the Outer Party ignorant of the message that is being pushed out to and controlling them. • 62. Gentrification, By Ruth Glass The term "Gentrification" was coined by British sociologist Ruth Glass in 1964 to describe the influx of the middle class displacing lower class worker residents in urban neighbourhoods; her example was London, and its working class who resided in the London Borough of Islington. The term was published in Ruth Glass' book 'London: aspects of change' she stated that 'One by one, many of the working class neighbourhoods of London have been invaded by the middle–classes– upper and lower.' she also claimed that 'Once this process of 'gentrification ' starts in a district it goes on rapidly, until all or most of the original working–class occupiers are displaced and the whole social character of the district is changed.' Gentrification is a multifaceted phenomenon which has been defined differently over the years, there is no concrete definition. Before we look at whether Gentrification is actually damaging the lower class society, we must first focus on the causes of Gentrification and then we may proceed to look at its effects. Many sociologist have tried to explain the roots and the reasons for the existence of Gentrification and why it is spreading. Sociologists Bruce London and J. John Palen came up with a list of five explanations these were: demographic– ecological, socio–cultural, political–economical, community networks, and social movements. These explanations were published in a book in 1984 called 'Gentrification, Displacement, and Neighborhood Revitalization'. Many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Color Symbolism In The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Colors have a large impact on society. They have the ability to affect people's moods, appetites, and behaviors. Colors also have the ability to act as symbols. For example, the color white often acts as a symbol of innocence, and the color yellow often represents happiness. Throughout the book The Great Gatsby, multiple colors symbolize different aspects of Jay Gatsby's life. In particular, the color blue symbolizes the disappointment in his life. F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes the color blue to act as a symbol of the disillusioned, lonely lifestyle Jay Gatsby lives. The appearance of the color blue in certain aspects of Gatsby's life reveals Gatsby's inner loneliness. In the beginning of the book, Gatsby throws large, extravagant parties at his house in hopes that Daisy will arrive. Fitzgerald writes, "In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars" (Fitzgerald 43). Gatsby's gardens, colored blue, stand to reflect the true mood of Gatsby at his parties. Although he threw lively parties, Gatsby did not partake in them because Daisy did not arrive. As a result, his inner sadness shows itself. The heavy contrast between the popular, sociable people at Gatsby's parties and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think about asset mapping, the difference between faith based and faith rooted organizations and making generalized disparaging assumptions about particular groups of people. Most of all I think about the lingering question that has had me bewildered since the first day of class. 'What is Urban?' I thought that I had a monopoly on the characterization of urban. Especially, considering that I was born and raised in an impoverished inner city neighborhood all of my life. My assumptions were that urban was a way of saying primarily black neighborhoods. This essay seeks to highlight a few thoughts and what I have learned this semester in the Urban Fellows class. Nevertheless, I have now come to understand based on in class lectures and power–point slides that Urban is typically an inner city primarily filled with black and Latino residents. Most often times these are impoverished neighborhoods. Urban can also be seen as the first ring of suburban neighborhoods filled with those who have been affected by gentrification . Large clusters of people living in poverty stricken communities, with a lack of adequate resources or unused resources could very well describe what urban means. But urban is not all lack of flourishing neighborhoods. In urban neighborhoods there is more than just the poor or one particular class of people as the majority. There are inadequate schools, ... • 72. Analysis Of ' The Dream On Isolation ' By Laurence Ralph... Renegade Dreams on Isolation Introduction In Laurence Ralph's Renegade Dreams, the citizens in Eastwood are susceptible to isolation due the physical injuries and social injuries. My main argument is, the physical injuries and social injuries have impacted their daily lives and have made some residents isolated from others around them. The theme of isolation plays a role in throughout the book as the residents use isolation to motivate themselves and pursue their dreams. This dream is curated from different residents such as Justin Cone, Blizzard, and the gangs (Divine Knights). In the essay, the topics covered are the stories of the characters and the context of isolation in motivating residents to achieve their dreams. This idea can be explained through the ethnographic data, in text citations, and the stories of the characters. Conceptual conversation The theoretical conversation Ralph explores in the book is isolation. He draws ideas from Wacqaunt and Wilson's The Cost of Racial and Class Exclusion in the Inner City. In the article, the central argument is there is an interrelated set of characteristics that corresponds to social–structural problems in the inner city and the process has triggered "hyper–ghettoization." The evidences Wacquant and Wilson present are mainly statistical and anthropology data. The article explains many of the residents are isolated due to the social–structural, economic, and political issues that surround them. The residents being moved by ... • 76. Overcoming Spatial Mismatch in Buying a Home As any good realtor will say, there are three main important factors to remember when buying or renting a piece of property: "location, location, location". Oftentimes, the location of ones home will have some of the biggest impacts on their lives. Since we live in a capitalist society where work is key to survival, location has a major affect on work. The importance of location can become a problem when work and the rest of one's life become separate. Before the industrial revolution, work and the house were intertwined with both activities taking place in the same location. However, after the industrial revolution, work was moved outside the home and into the factory. Though our current society is not structured around factories, the physical location of the workplace remains separated from the home. This can lead to conflicts between where someone lives, sometimes without much of a choice, and the work available. The crux of this is the Spatial Mismatch theory which is the idea that the economic restructuring that has taken place in the past decades has lead to the loss of work opportunities for low–income and minority workers due to work being moved away from where they live. Economic restructuring such as deindustrialization has moved many jobs away from the city and urban setting and into the suburbs where low–income and minority workers may not have an opportunity to live. In addition to the movement of jobs, the importance of transportation, both private and public, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dating back to the times of slavery, the black community in America has historically used music as a vehicle for self–expression and introspection. The blues was the original form of musical self–expression, and was conceived from "field hollering", the melodious manner in which slaves working the fields and forests aired out grievances and gave their opinions on their present situation. The use of music for communal empowerment and expression of self within the black community is still seen today, but is seen in the more contemporary genre of hip–hop music which originated in the early 70s in the New York Inner City.
