Imagining Argentina is a novel written by Lawrence Thornton, which is set in the era of the late
1970s of Argentina, during the dirty war. The dirty war came into effect when a military junta had
taken power by force, shortly after the former president was removed. The main cause of the dirty
war was to suppress the people of Argentina who are on the side of left wing politically. Anyone
suspected or even related to the side of left–wing would have a green falcon visit their home or
wherever they are, and will be kidnapped and tortured, becoming known to the people as the
"disappeared". Although thousands of Argentinians have disappeared through the years of the dirty
war, their identity has not disappeared, through the power a name holds. Carlos Rueda, the
protagonist, believes names to be much more than just a name. A name holds a person's uniqueness;
their personality; their identity; and their story. Carlos is gifted with an imagination, which can
predict the fate of the "disappeared" through the power these names hold. Although identity is a key

There are the Andes on the western boarder for over 2500 miles (4000 kilometers). The Andes are
also shared with Chile. Some of the highest peaks in the Andes are the Aconcagua, the Ojos del
Salado, and the Pissis. Among those peaks, there are many challenging climbs. Some of the most
challenging climbs in the Andes are the San Lorenzo, the Tronador, the Dos Picos, and the Domuyo.
The Aconcagua is the highest summit in the Americas (North, Central, and South America). It is

world with a large amount of natural resources, Argentina has the potential to join the leaders on the
global stage. Although having latent potential, Argentina lacks the ability and experience to meet the
requirements of stabilizing itself as a country. Argentina's potential is accurately presented through
its distinct sense of nationalism through certain aspects of culture and its ability to make effective
foreign policy, but Argentina's strong points are quickly overshadowed by its inability to stabilize
itself economically and construct effective domestic policies.
Argentina identifies itself nationalistically through its extremely passionate football culture. Sport
and nationalism often co–exist, as sports provides a stepping stone for symbolic competition
between two nations. The game of football did not exist in Argentina until the end of the 19th

In 1502 European sailors arrived ashore the Argentinean land during the Amerigo Vespucci voyage
in 1502. A Spanish navigator named Juan Diaz de Solias visited Argentina during the year of 1516.
The Spanish people created a permanent colony on the site of Buenos Aires in 1580, which was built
overland and greatly resembled those built in Peru. From this established colony the regions of Rio
de la Plata and Buenos Aires become the center of trade in Central America and throughout Europe.
In the year of 1816 on July 9th the region of Buenos Aires would declare for their independence
from Spanish opposition. After their victory over the Spanish, two groups would embark in lengthy
conflicts between one another on who would/should control the region of Buenos Aires, and the two
groups being the centralists and the federalists. These two groups thus combine to create the nation
known to this day as Argentina finally establishing in the late 19th century finally agreeing on

The Tension between Argentina and Britian
Argentina and Britain have always had mild tension between them almost since the the
independence of Argentina, this main cause of tension has always been over the sovereignty of the
Falkland Islands.
Britain first claimed sovereignty of the Islands in 1765 alongside France around approximately the
same time, however France transferred it's settlements to Spain in 1767. Britain left their settlement
on the Island in 1774 but claimed they never relinquished sovereignty. Spain also abandoned their
settlement later in 1811. (BBC News , 2013)
In 1820 an Argentine merchant, Luis Vernet, tried to established commercial settlements on the
islands. These settlements were not officially claimed by Argentina until 1828, when Luis Vernet
submitted his proposal for official recognition of his commercial settlement on Malvinas to become
an Argentine colony. The Argentine government, shortly after receiving the proposal, declared their
claim to the islands. (Lorton, 2012)
In 1833 the first conflict between Britain and Argentina occurred in regards to the islands. Britain
had returned to islands to expel the Argentine garrison, the British removed the Argentine flag flying
on the island and sent it back with their men to the mainland with a message, "the British had found,
a foreign flag in the territory of His Majesty." (Lorton, 2012, p.g 151). The Argentine settlers on the
Island were allowed to remain alsong as the accepted British rule, however most settlers left
gradually after.
