A Study On The Respiratory Exchange Essay
Abstract
The characteristics of the phylum, Arthropoda, includes jointed legs and an exoskeleton (Freeman,
2014). The insect the team and I chose to work on were the hissing cockroaches, Gromphadorhina
portentosa. Hissing cockroaches are small ectothermic animals and are known to have a tracheal
system (Burnaford) that allows them to transfer oxygen into their body. Introduction
The organism used in the experiment is a hissing cockroach and the main reason was that
cockroaches are arthropods that have a trachea in which is almost similar to humans. Although
humans have a trachea which is more of a "wind pipe" structure whereas insects have a tracheae in
which is more of a network of air tubes (Bartrim, 2014). The tracheal system has the capacity to
transport oxygen and carbon dioxide (Heinrich, 2013) in which the series of branched tubes help
deliver oxygen from the environment to the cells (Burnaford, 2016). The respiratory exchange is
regulated by the spiracles and this creates three phases of gas exchange (Bartrim, 2014); continuous,
cyclic, and discontinuous. The most distinct phase is the discontinuous gas exchange cycle (DGC)
because it's the phase that insects must deal with (Heinrich, 2014). The DGC has its own three
phases; closed phase, open phase, and the flutter phase (Heinrich, 2014).
The hypothesis we had was that the mass of the insect correlates towards respiration. The more mass
it has the higher respiration. The dependent variable is the mass of the

Bed Bugs Infestation Research Paper
Do you have all the signs of a bed bugs infestation? These little unwelcome guests are a pain to get
rid of, unless you call the professionals at RCD Exterminating. RCD Exterminating, located in
Rochester, NY, knows how to eliminate bed bugs from your residential or commercial space. Bed
bugs are tiny reddish brown insects, around four to five millimeters in size, that feed on human
blood. They prefer to live around the bed and bedding (hence the name). A female bed bug can lay
as much as ten eggs a day over the course of her entire lifetime. So don't wait until a small problem
becomes a huge infestation. If you have any signs of bed bugs, it's time to call RCD Exterminating.
If your bed has a moldy smell, or a wet towel smell, you may have

What Are The Characteristics Of Cockroaches
For some people, even the mention of cockroaches sends shivers down their spines. Often, people
are reminded of dirtiness when it comes to cockroaches. Worse still, cockroaches are known for
spreading diseases such as Salmonellosis, and also triggering allergies and asthma!
On top of that, cockroaches also portray another shocking characteristic–cannibalism.
Studies have shown cannibalism in six species of cockroaches, including German, American, and
Oriental that show cannibalistic tendencies. Unfortunately, the German and American cockroach are
most commonly found and seen in Malaysian homes.
You may notice some cockroaches found in your home tend to be bigger and some tend to fly while
some don't. That's the difference between German and American cockroaches. German cockroaches
come in yellowish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Usually, it's the older, stronger cockroaches praying on the young and weak.
However, in terms of pest control this survival instinct sometimes doesn't work out for them. If one
cockroach has consumed some bait, and then falls victim to being cannibalised, those feeding upon
it will also become infected with the effects of the bait.
Regulation
Another reason behind their cannibalistic instinct is due to self–regulation. Large populations mean
less food to go around. Eliminating members of the intrusion means fewer mouths to feed, resulting
in more food for everyone else. Usually, this occurs with the females consuming eggs and nymphs
when food is scarce.
German cockroach nymphs can sometimes avoid being cannibalised by foraging for food during the
day. Adult cockroaches usually operate during the night. These nymphs have also developed a
pheromone that repels adult cockroaches.
It has also been reported that female American cockroaches turn to cannibalism when mating. Just
like black widow spiders, female American cockroaches can consume their male partner during

Characteristics Of The Hissing Cockroaches
Analysis:
Gromphadorhina portentosa, commonly known as the hissing cockroach, lives within the tropical
lowland rainforests of Madagascar among the dry litter on the forest floor. While multiple species of
cockroaches have slender like feet, the hissing cockroach has pads and hooks (Figure 3, shows the
adaptive hooks/visual description of cockroach). A young cockroach, a nymph, undergoes a process
called metamorphosis where its shell sheds periodically to allow for growth. The process evolved
approximately 20 million years ago (Figure 1, phylogenetic tree referencing common ancestor). Due
to metamorphosis, it undergoes mitotic division of its mycetocytes, special cells that harbour
symbiotic microorganisms, approximately 48 hours in a week. The hissing cockroach is an
omnivorous scavenger and can consume both organic and inorganic food, although they prefer
sweets, meats, and starches. Hissing cockroaches also have cellulase in their saliva, which is meant
to break down crystallized cellulose. This trait was developed approximately 10 million years ago,
causing two new distinct species (Figure 1, distinct species split). It responds to tactile and wind
stimulus by turning away from the stimulus and running. As such, a roach will begin running
between 8.2 and gradually to 70.2 m/s after its sensory cells experience stimuli.
Conclusion:
Evolution, the process by which a species' gene pool changes over time, creates necessary variation
in organisms for adaptation to a variety

Wingbeat Frequency Lab Report
Group 3 waved at the cockroach when it was flying to observe how the wingbeat frequency and
phase relationships would change in response to a sudden visual stimulus. As seen on Chart Trace 2,
the duration of the wingbeat cycle for both the left and right hindwing increased substantially,
therefore decreasing the wingbeat frequency. When a visual stimulus was added the wingbeat
frequency of the hindwings changed from 19.65 hertz to 19.0 hertz. We were only able to retrieve
data from the left forewings with the visual stimulus. The change in duration of the wingbeat cycle
for the left forewing was not as significant as the hindwings. The duration of the left forewing
changed from 49.77 ms to approximately 49.95 ms. If comparing only the wingbeat

The amount of neural discharge due to stimulation of tactile sensilla receptor is posted on figure 1.
FIGURE 1: Mean action potential activity of tactile sensilla receptors in femural of cockroach.
In this experiment, it was found that there exists a spontaneous resting activity within the cockroach
tibia even though tactile sensilla receptors have not yet been stimulated. From figure 1 it can be
observed that the mean spontaneous resting activity of the cockroach leg is (42+/–9.7) action

Cockroach femoral tactile spine is a type I mechanoreceptors and it contains a single bipolar sensory
neuron. At the base of the tactile spine, there are afferent neural sensory dendrites which are
sensitive to signals. These dendrite in the wall of the spine leads through the spine lumen to a cell
body, and then to an axon that proceeds along the femur. One interesting point is that the cell body
is surrounded by glial cell however there is no glial cell wrapped around axon body or dendrites.
The location of glial wrapping can suggest that they assist in passive conduction action potential
from dendrites to the axon. (French 1993).
Originally the dendrites are surrounded by fluid called endolymph which is rich in K+. When there
is no stimulation there are few movement of ions in and out of the dendrites, this is can be seen in
figure 1 as resting spontaneous potential activity. When there is a movement in tactile receptors
bristle, the K+ channels open. Due to different concentration of K+ ions across the cell membrane,
K+ ions enter the cell, causing the cell to depolarize. These causes increase in neural discharge
resulting in increase in number of action potential. (Moyes & Schulte 2006).Depending on which
direction the bristle moves, more or less K+ channel opens and therefore result in different amounts
of action potential discharge as seen in figure 1.

The Cockroach by Kevin Kalligan
Kevin Halligan was born in Toronto, Canada in 1964. He regards himself as an Anglophile and has
spent long periods of time living in England, but has also travelled in Asia, where this poem, 'The
Cockroach', was written. 'The Cockroach', is a short passage of a cockroach and how it made its way
around a room, moving in lines and loops. It uses many different forms of imagery to depict the
cockroach giving it emotion and character. In this poem he apparently focuses an intense
concentration on an insect, but in a powerful twist of focus the whole poem flips back to reveal that
Halligan also compares the cockroach to himself, leading the reader to suppose that the cockroach is
representational of the poet and of life itself.
When looking at a piece of poetry, the first thing that should be analyzed is the title. So in this case,
one must speculate why and how Kevin Halligan selected the words he did for his title of the poem:
The Cockroach. Firstly the word 'The' gives the reader a sense of a one particular cockroach. Not
just any cockroach in general, or all cockroaches, but the single one in this poem, which he
describes in intense detail. The cockroach, not a matter usually written about by many poets,
provides readers with a sense of inquisitiveness that lures them in, therefore making the title stand
out. The standard negative connotation of cockroach being a foul pest has been disregarded. Instead
throughout the poem, Halligan's eyes follow the cockroach, recalling all

The Metamorphosis Theme
"The Metamorphosis" by Kafka presents readers with an intensely claustrophobic and absurd
premise featuring a protagonist that is so used to living like an insect and so consumed with guilt
that these elements of his life finally take over and lead to his demise. In this world Kafka creates,
Gregor lives like an insect even before his metamorphosis and this theme is developed at the
beginning of the story when he wakes up to find that he has become what he most resembled in his
life.
The idea of guilt and scurrying about to please others figures prominently in this text and it is useful
to look at the ways in which a compounding sense of guilt leads to Gregor's final resignation to
death in Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis. For a man ... Show more content on

His fate, it seems, is to provide for his family and there are several instances in which he laments his
inability to provide for his mother, father, and dear sister. The narrator states, revealing one of these
themes in "The Metamorphosis", "Gregor's sole desire was to do his utmost to help the family to
forget as soon as possible the catastrophe which had overwhelmed the business and thrown them all
into a state of complete despair" (95) and this sense of blind duty compels him to work a
meaningless, menial job that has both figuratively and literally turned him into a filthy, scuttling,
and helpless insect. While this is true on a more basic level, the root of Gregor's problem stems from
a deep–seated feeling of guilt, an emotion that eventually leads to his demise. By the end of the
story, Gregor has completely lost his purpose and for a man that once existed simply as a utilitarian
creature (again, like an insect since he lives only to fulfill his duty to the group). At one point, his
feelings of uselessness are described as, ""Gregor was now cut off from his mother, who was
perhaps nearly dying because of him; he dared not open the door for fear of frightening his sister,
who had to stay with her mother, there was nothing he could do but wait; and harassed by self–
reproach and worry he began to crawl to and fro" (109) and it is clear that the guilt of being useless
is mounting and leading to his resignation in the face of

Physical Characteristics Of Cockroaches
Cockroaches are the oldest and most primitive winged insects. Most species are found in tropic area,
fewer species are found in temperate area. Majority of the species are no economic importance,
inhabiting the floor of tropical, caves, rain forests, deserts, etc (Lee & Ng 2009).
2.1.2 Physical characteristics
Most cockroaches are light brown to black color to suit their cryptic, habitat and nocturnal behavior.
Cockroach body is typically oval and flattened dorsal–ventrally. This type of shape allows it to
squeeze through as well as escape into narrow hole or cracks and spaces in litter, walls and rocks.
Body parts of cockroaches can be divided into three parts which are the head, thorax and abdomen.
Head of cockroaches bearing a pair of antennae, two compound eyes and a biting or chewing
mouthparts. At the thorax, three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings are attached. But, not all the
cockroaches has wing. For example, Madagascar cockroach. In certain cockroaches, adult ... Show

They have 3 stages in their life cycle: the egg, nymph and adult. New emerged adults usually mate
within 2 to 3 days. Sperm fluid of the male cockroach is able to fertilise all the eggs of female
cockroach. The eggs are normally produced after few days of mating. Eggs are laid by the female in
groups and are protected by a capsule–like shell named ootheca. Number of eggs in the ootheca
varying with species, ranging from 12 to 48 eggs (Lee & Ng 2009).
2.1.4 Types of cockroaches
There are more than 4000 species of cockroaches, only 4% are considered as pests (Cochran 2009).
The most common type of cockroaches found in residential area are the American cockroach
(Periplaneta americana) (Figure 1 & 2), German cockroach (Blattela germanica) (Figure 3) and

Franz Kafka 's The Metamorphosis
Selfishness is omnipresent in the context of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Throughout the
story, the Samsa family struggle to balance their own lives and the sympathy for Gregor, the only
son, as his transformation from human to cockroach leaves a burden on the family and results in the
loss of Gregor's humanity. Despite the fact that Gregor had been the sole income of the family, the
loss of humanity from becoming a cockroach was overwhelming to the family, resulting in selfish
tendencies. Kafka displays how humans are unintentionally selfish, especially when the inability to
sympathize diminishes through the family's relationships. Kafka and his domineering father had a
strained relationship, in which Kafka's ambitions in literature outraged his father, which profoundly
affected his writing. "Whenever Kafka disagreed with his father or told his father that he wanted to
be a write, not a shop owner, his father got very upset" (Stephens). Kafka being the only son of the
family, was pressured into assuming the role of his father, as women were typically limited to
domestic work in the early nineteenth century. The disapproval of Kafka's literature by his father
would further lead him to isolation and depression. During his childhood, Kafka's father constantly
belittled and abused him as a form of setting him straight, but had not understood the repercussions
of his actions which would lead to Kafka's depression and antagonism towards his father. The
selfishness of his

Reticulitermes Lab Report
Reticulitermes termites can be found in most southeastern regions because of the warm and humid
conditions. The termites in this experiment are housed inside a petri dish that can be described as
pale insects three to twenty millimeters long in body length, and can also be commonly known as
"white ants". Termites live in organized colonies and are defined by divisions of labor. Termites are
also considered to be social insects inside their colonies where they work together to bring food and
water back to their colonies for survival. There are different levels in a termite colony, which consist
of workers, soldiers, and reproductive (Watson, 1985). Termite workers in the colony forage for

Theme Of The Woodspurge And The Cockroach
Rossetti and Halligan both expressed the theme of personal reflection throughout the poems, The
Woodspurge and The Cockroach. By using different language effects, the two poets easily convey
this theme. The orderly structure of four verses per stanza and eight syllables for most verses in The
Woodspurge, gives the reader a dull feeling as it is consistent. The rhyme at the end of each verse
also gives a monotonous atmosphere and shows the thought Rossetti wants to convey, stages of
grief, something that one won't necessarily want to pay attention to, something that makes people
mournful. The only verse that breaks the repetitive eight syllable rhythm is 'the woodspurge
flowered, three cups in one'. The sudden change shows that the appearance of the woodspurge made
Rossetti realise something important. This may be the fact that his grief and sorrow cannot change
his fate, like how the woodspurge will naturally and always have 'three cups in one'. Even though a
woodspurge only comes in the colour green, 'flowered' usually gives a feeling of something pretty
blossoming, delivering a refreshed and colourful atmosphere, which contrasts from the previous
dullness. This feeling might be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

though in 'he seemed quite satisfied to trace a path', the 'quite' gives off an uneasy feeling, but the

on the 'path between the wainscot and the door', able to move around freely. 'But soon he turned to
jog in crooked rings', uncertain as to where to go, getting bored of the situation. This shows that
there are times where people can be unsettled, giving them many opportunities to do different
things. Like an adolescent always finding something new, 'circling the rusty table leg', risk taking

Concerns about Human Conditions in Poems, Summer Farm and...
The poets Norman MacCaig and Kevin Halligan express their concern about the human condition in
the poems 'Summer Farm' and 'The Cockroach'. As they investigate the role and identity of the
individual, the theme of self–reflection is revealed.
The title of the poem 'Summer Farm' is rather misleading. At first look, it brings us a feeling of
warmth and good memories, which are usually related to the summer. 'Farm' evokes the same effect
with the addition to the visual imagery of animals and nature. However as we begin reading we
realise that 'Summer Farm' is not about a farm as we expected but the reader embarking on a
journey of self–reflection. The peacefulness of the atmosphere is now gone and the tone is serious.
The poem divides into two parts. The first two stanzas dealing with nature and the last two
concentrate on the poet who commences his process of self–reflection. The poem here plots a
movement away from the real to the theoretical. In the third stanza the mention of the word 'fear'
and the poet's portrayal of himself as a 'pile of selves' add on to a more thoughtful mood. The poem
is ended in such a way causing us to feel as though there is more to be said which disturbs us.
The use of the word 'dizzy' at the end of MacCaig's chain of thoughts and the start of his 'not
thinking' state, makes the reader feel as though the poet has been confused by his own thoughts. The
third stanza indicates a change in the focus of the poem, which is the poet himself. In the

The presence of cockroaches is often detected by their damage, smell or by the fecal matter (called
"frass") they deposit. These are clues which can aid in diagnosing a cockroach problem.
Cockroaches may use such things as glue or paste (especially from animal–based materials), starch
and certain color dyes as foods. As a result, items such as stamps, envelopes, bindings of older
books, draperies and occasionally wallpapers may show signs of feeding. The size of the mandible
marks and the apparent degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type of roach
which did the damage. The size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the cockroach species
involved.
The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and harboring
in damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens, bathrooms, and storage
areas indoors. Filth from these sources is spread by the cockroaches to food supplies, food
preparation surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Far more food is contaminated by
cockroaches than they are able to eat. Diseases transmitted as a result of these habits were discussed
earlier. These same habits are why people are so disgusted and repulsed by the mere presence of
cockroaches. For many people, personal disgust and the social stigma attached to cockroaches
produce a complete lack of tolerance for any cockroaches in their home or elsewhere.

Abstract
The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the effect of application of propoxur (a carbamate
insecticide) on the American cockroach. From experimental observations, it has been concluded that
the amount of propoxur needed to kill 50% of the test subjects (referred to as LD50) was ... Show

Metamorphosis Theme Essay
A major theme that is demonstrated throughout The Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka, is the
idea of the loss of humanity. This is demonstrated through Gregor's transformation into a cockroach.
Any human being would resent the idea of being compared to a cockroach, mainly because it is one
of the farthest things from being humane. As a Family and Human studies major, throughout my
classes, I have been introduced to many different theories that relate to the various aspects of a
human being. Because there are so many different factors that can impact the numerous areas that
make up the humanity of a person, it is a complicated subject. Many of the issues that Gregor
struggles with throughout the story correspond with issues that humans face on a daily basis. The
symptoms that result from Gregor's problems are comparable to those of any person struggling with
similar matters. A few of these issues include a state of denial, rejection, and alienation. ... Show

His father's action of throwing an apple at him and throwing him back into the bedroom was a very
external way of showing rejection. (pp. 955–956) Due to this rejection, Gregor's feelings of
inferiority are demonstrated through many of the thoughts that run through his head as he waits in
the bedroom. For example, instead of feeling bad for himself, he thinks about his family first. He
decides that he will behave in a quiet and patient manner for the family in order to "make the
inconveniences he was putting them through in his present state a little bearable for them." (p. 957)
It is interesting that, although he is in a much more dreadful state than his family, he still worries
about them before himself. It is probable that this has much to do with Gregor's selfless character,
but, to a certain extent, inferiority to his family is also demonstrated through these

The Revolt Of The Cockroach People
Mexican Americans in Texas have a long and detailed history spanning from the arrival of Cortez all
the way to the present day. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans
have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano
identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to
oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power
over all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican
Americans, they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican
or Spanish heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta's novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach
People, he dives into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than
life character is on the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the
group. It was particularly rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize
politically and socially in order to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that
gave rise to the Chicano Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the
traditional roles gave Chicano men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to
conquer the past oppressions from whites. Traditional roles for men in Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican
cultures dictate the men as the

Metamorphosis Conflicts
In the novel "The Metamorphosis" by Frank Kafka there is internal and external conflicts. The
internal conflict is with the main character Gregor. The external happens with the people around
him. The conflicts happen because at the beginning of the story Gregor turns into a cockroach. After
his transformation Gregor is isolated from himself, society and his family. These characters
emphasize the theme in the novel of isolation.
The narrative conflict of man versus self is what happens with Gregor. The first isolation happens
within himself. The morning he woke up and saw he was a cockroach he did not know what to do.

When his family saw the creature he was they did not think anything major of it at first. His father
tries to ignore him as much as possible. When his father saw what he was he did not even want to
hear about him, he was embarrassed. His father also forbids his mother from seeing him. Gregor's
mother never reacted to things well, that is the reason why he did that. His sister feeds him but she
tries hard not to look or make eye contact with him. The reason why she does not look at him is
because he is "Radically different, face–less and non–human" (Rhodes). At first she tried to help
him but then "...Gregor Samsa who, in responding to his sister's violin playing, causes this music to

Pesticide Essay
Knowledge of the target pest's biological characteristics, and the genetics and mechanisms of
pesticide resistance in the pest is essential in pest management programs. However, despite our
rapidly increasing knowledge of the biochemical and molecular nature of resistance, it seems that
management strategies still rely largely on common sense and practical tactics even though different
resistance mechanisms may be present (Horowitz and Denholm 2001).
Unfortunately, in the majority of these cases, the mechanisms of resistance are not reported nor
studied. Most recent research advances in insect topics, especially in resistance and in molecular and
genetic advances focus on Diptera, particularly Drosophila and mosquitoes. Hemingway & Ranson

The mechanisms of toxic action of essential oils have not been fully elucidated to date. Studies on
the mode of action of essential oil treatments are of importance in order to establish the spectrum of
activity and to determine their full commercial potential, thereby providing useful information on
the appropriate formulation types. Given the scant knowledge of the mode of action of individual
essential oils as well as their mixtures, and of the lack of experimental protocols for these
physiological tests, much more work has yet to be undertaken. Although many essential oil
compounds have been shown to be toxic or repellent to a range of insects, structure–activity studies
in individual insect species provide few insights as to the exact mode of action of these compounds.
Many essential oils tested are effective without direct contact (Choi et al.
2003) indicating that delivery of these oils to target tissues occurs through a vapor phase, perhaps
through penetration via the respiratory system. It is interesting to note that not all insects are
affected by these terpenoids. For some insect species they act as allomones or they mimic insect
pheromones representing semiochemical communication between insect and plant, where the
evolution of chemical and physical defenses against a diverse insect group by the plant co–evolved
with an ability of some insects to detoxify a wide range of plant chemicals. Thus the response to a
given compound may be subject to considerable

The Contribution Of Cockroaches
The contribution of cockroaches in the ecosystem.
What will happen if there were no cockroaches?
Cockroaches are one of the ancient species, it begins to be found from the Carboniferous period,
about 320 million years ago [1]. It belongs to the group of Blattodea, undering the category of
Inseacta. Most of us has seen cockroaches, we often see them hiding inside the dark and humid
place in our home, including the kitchen, toilet or the gutter. Every time we see them, we would
never be nice to them, killing them as fast as we could, we may ever hope they could become
extinct. However, have we thought about the their benefits and contribution to the world? In this

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches Lab Report
To find out how mass affects the metabolic rate of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches we conducted
an experiment. We found the amount of CO2 outtake of different sized Madagascar Hissing
Cockroaches by, using a Quibit gas analysis and analog–to–digital conversion system((Abraham, et
al., 2017). Madagascar hissing cockroaches have a different way of breathing than most other
vertebrates, we use a continuous gas exchange while they use a discontinuous gas exchange. We
hypothesize that the mass and mass–specific metabolic rates will have an inverse relationship. As
expected our results showed that the cockroach with the largest mass had the smallest mass–specific
metabolic rate and vice versa. This didn't come as a surprise to us because, On a per–gram basis,
small animals have higher BMRs than do large animals that have more mass will have much less
energy in a gram of tissue than a small animal, supporting my hypothesis(Freeman 2014).

Got Milk? Roach Milk Summary
The article I read is called "Got Milk? Roach milk could be a new superfood" by Dinsa Sachan. The
article is mainly about how scientists have studied a specific type of cockroach, the Pacific beetle
cockroach, and have discovered that it could contain a type of milk. This cockroach species is the
only one that's viviparous, which means that it gives birth to live young. The cockroach uses the
milk–like liquid to feed the babies before they are born. That milk contains special crystals that are
located in the guts of cockroach embryos, which are full of protein. These crystals were first
discovered back in 2004 by Subramanian Ramaswamy, who was studying at the University of Iowa

Persona Poems' Voice In today's world some of us work for others. It was not different in the past
either. Some people work and sacrifice themselves to make others to live comfortable, as it is
explicitly emphasized in The Metamorphosis by Kafka. Kafka had very complicated childhood. He
did not have splendid relationships neither with his family, or with the society he lived in. That is
why he always felt overwhelmed and isolated. The live was not fair to him at all. He used part of his
own life story in the Metamorphosis. He did explain beginnings and ends in his great novel.
Therefore Metamorphosis still stands as a hidden and arguable story. It is still unclear, why Kafka
chose a bug as the burden. But despite this there are some signs of his intensions and feelings. He
reveals some of his intentions in the story. Kafka chose symbolical bug to explain his life story. I
will probe questions such why a bug? What does the bug represent? How Kafka related Gregor's life
to his. Since Kafka does not give an explicit reason about why he chose a cockroach for his story,
perhaps it is just an image of his life. Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis as result of his life. "He was
never quite satisfied with his relationships with women or with his family." (Kafka 1878). As we
understand from the text, Kafka had many failures in his life like Gregor. Kafka was forced by his
father to be a successful businessman. Which he did not want to

Essay about The Endless Cycle of the American Cockroach
The American cockroach was introduced to the United States from Africa as early as 1625. They
belong to the Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Arthropoda, Class: Insecta (Insecta: Blattodea:
Blattidae), Order: Dictyoptera, and Family: Blattidae. Its common name is American cockroach and
scientific name is Periplaneta Americana (Linnaeus). American cockroaches are normally between
one and one and a half inches in length. They are oval shaped and reddish–brow with yellow fringes
on the area of the body behind the head as adults. They hide in dark crevices during the day, which
could include: sewer and drainage systems, cracks and crevices of a house, steam tunnels, large
institutional buildings and basements. They emerge at night to hunt for food. ... Show more content

The male cockroaches have cerci with 18 to 19 segments while the female has 13 to 14 segments.
The male American cockroaches have a pair of styli between the cerci while the females do not. The
life cycle from egg to adult averages about 600 days; and the adult life span may be another 400
days. Adult females will produce an average of 150 offspring in her lifetime. Environmental factors
such as temperature and humidity can increase or decrease the developmental time of the American
cockroach.
American cockroaches can become a health problem due to their association with human waste and
disease. At least 22 species of pathogenic human bacteria, virus, fungi, and protozoans, as well as
five species of helminthic worms, have been collected from American Cockroaches. Cockroaches
crawl through dirty areas and then walk around our homes bringing in lots of bacteria and germs.
They can contaminate food by shedding their skins and leaving their waste around, which can
trigger allergic reactions, asthma and other illnesses, especially in children. These pests can
contaminate food, causing food poisoning, dysentery, or diarrhea. They can create an unpleasant
smell in the home or building which they infest.
Some of the coolest things I've learned about my insect: A cockroach can live almost a month
without food, about two weeks without water and one week without its head! Some female
cockroaches only mate once and stay pregnant for life!

The Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka
In Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," Gregor Samsa deals with the alienation from his family
stemming from both absurd and mundane circumstances. While Gregor's transformation into a bug
is the catalyst to his physical alienation, Gregor had for years been becoming more and more
isolated mentally and emotionally from his family due to his displeasure at his having to work a job
he hated due to his father's failings and the lack of gratitude he received from his family for his hard
work. It was not just his family who Gregor was becoming isolated from, but it was humanity in
general that Gregor had been drifting apart from, as he had not mentioned having any friends or
work colleagues which leads the readers to believe he had no social life ... Show more content on

After all, willpower is a very "human" concept and is the driver for all progress, and without the
resolve mankind has been shown to possess, there is only stagnancy. When you stop moving
forward with your life, only a drastic shift in circumstances can change this progression, as Gregor's
metamorphosis demonstrates. In "The Metamorphosis," Kafka utilizes the idea of alienation in a few
different contexts: there is the alienation Gregor is experiencing between himself and his
identity/well–being, the alienation spawning between himself and his humanity, and the isolation
between him and his family. In the text, Gregor has alienated himself from any semblance of a
personal identity mostly due to the emphasis he has placed on his work. Gregor's life revolves
around work, as it takes precedence over all else. This is evidenced by the lack of a reaction he had
towards the discovery of his transformation, instead focusing on how "strenuous" his career is and
the repercussions of possibly missing work that day. The man has just turned into a big cockroach
with no explanation as to why or how this has happened, and all he wonders about is what would
happen if he told off his boss. This is a testament to how much he defines himself through his work,

Analysis on Fate of a Cockroach
Tawfiq al–Hakim or Tawfik el–Hakim, (October 9, 1898 – July 26, 1987) was a prominent Egyptian
writer. He is one of the pioneers of the Arabic novel and drama. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt,
the son of an Egyptian wealthy judge and a Turkish mother The triumphs and failures that are
represented by the reception of his enormous output of plays are emblematic of the issues that have
confronted the Egyptian drama genre as it has endeavored to adapt its complex modes of
communication to Egyptian society.

mother. His father, a wealthy peasant, worked as a judge in the judiciary in the village of al–

However, in spite of such critical controversies, he continued to write plays with philosophical
themes culled from a variety of cultural sources: Pygmalion (1942), an interesting blend of the
legends of Pygmalion and Narcissus; Sulayman el–Hakim (Solomon the Wise, 1943), and El–Malik
Udib (King Oedipus, 1949).
Some of el–Hakim's frustrations with the performance aspect were diverted by an invitation in 1945
to write a series of short plays for publication in newspaper article form. These works were gathered
together into two collections, Masrah el–Mugtama (Theatre of Society, 1950) and el–Masrah el–
Munawwa (Theatre Miscellany, 1956). The most memorable of these plays is Ughneyyet el–Mawt
(Death Song), a one–act play that with masterly economy depicts the fraught atmosphere in Upper
Egypt as a family awaits the return of the eldest son, a student in Cairo, in order that he may carry
out a murder in response to the expectations of a blood feud.
El–Hakim's response to the social transformations brought about by the 1952 revolution, which he
later criticized, was the play El Aydi El Na'mah (Soft Hands, 1954). The 'soft hands' of the title refer
to those of a prince of the former royal family who finds himself without a meaningful role in the
new society, a position in which he is joined by a young academic who has just finished writing a
doctoral thesis on the uses of the Arabic preposition hatta. The play explores in an

The Cockroach By Liu Yichang
In "The Cockroach" by Liu Yichang there are many underlying themes. The theme I chose to focus
on was the involvement of the seven deadly sins. The whole story revolves around death and it
leaves you wondering why that is, but it ties in to the moral of the story. Ding Pu is surrounded by
death and tries to kill the cockroach. But he doesn't allow these deadly sins to take over him, to kill
the cockroach. The first character that led me to think the theme followed the seven deadly sins was
the first suicide, Zhou Jincai. Rather than him dying because of a deadly sin, I think his lottery
winnings led to his death. It first started off with Zhou being greedy, you would need some motive
to enter a lottery. Alternatively, the story hints ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But these dreams get more detailed. In her dreams she is usually surrounded by bull and horse
demons, these animals are linked with pride, "From then on, grandma frequently saw the Bull–heads
and Horse–faces in her dreams" (23). She's also been thrown in a vat of oil and dismembered in her
dreams, which links to greed and anger "They made me lie on an iron bed. Then they used giant
nails to pin my hands down. They flogged me with an iron whip, until I was raw and lacerated and
was bleeding all over... In the centre was a huge pot on top of a blazing fire, bubbling with water
and blood... Just when the devils were throwing me in, I woke up" (23). Although the grandma did
what she could to be virtuous, it couldn't overlook the sins linked to her. She was prideful in the
sense that she did the right thing by becoming a vegetarian, and donated to charity. And she was
haunted by the fear that she had sinned and become a person not deemed worthy to leave hell. She
was haunted by that fear until her last breath, "'Leave me alone! Don't drag me to Hell! Don't drag
me to Hell!' When the three got to her room grandma had already drawn her last breath of life" (26).
The third character that succumbed to the deadly sins was the German acrobat, "A german acrobat
lost her grip when performing in Kowloon. She fell from mid–air to the ground and died" (29). The
acrobat had ten years of experience and after doing her stunt for that long she thought

Angel Isolation
Isolation from the world and other people can sometimes be good for people. For those that choose
to step back and take a break from the world, isolation can be a time of growth and self– discovery.
However, if a person is forced into isolation, like Gregor Samsa and the angel were, it has a
completely different effect. For the angel in "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and Gregor
Samsa in "The Metamorphosis", their isolation was physical as well as mental. The angel in "The
Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", was locked in a chicken coop for what seems to be several
months, constantly being picked at and gawked at by townspeople who had paid to see him. He was
a large man with enormous wings living in a tiny space with no meaningful human contact.
Although the reader is not able to delve into the mind of the angel and see his thoughts, it is easy to
imagine how someone would feel if they were in a strange place, locked in a small chicken coop,
and looked upon as a sideshow. In the "Metamorphosis", Gregor Samsa was also locked in a small
space for several months. Although he was in a familiar place, after his transition to a bug, he was
looked upon by his family as a stranger. He became more and more isolated as the story went on
both from his family and his humanity. Although the angel and Gregor were both nonhuman and
experienced several months of isolations, they were very different. The angel was described as an
old scruffy man with very large wings. Gregor on the other hand was a human man that had
completely turned into a bug. There were no physical human characteristics to Gregor once he had
turned into a large cockroach. The other characters in the stories also treated the Gregor and the old
man very differently. The people in "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", seemed to be a lot
more fascinated by the angel than scared of him. People wanted to see the angel and came from all
over and even paid money to do so. In The "Metamorphosis", Gregor's family was terrified of him
and kept him locked up in his room until he died. Another major difference between the two
characters was that in the end of "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", the angel was freed
from the coop, gained his strength

Franz Kafka Literary Analysis
When a society determines that a group of people is detrimental or dangerous, this designation often
comes from an underlying fear concerning that group of people. Social structures respond to this
fear by isolating, controlling, or destroying the group of people in question. Franz Kafka juxtaposes
Gregor's abnormal body with a conventional human environment to symbolize how society's
perceptions of an outcast changes over time.
Environmental factors which surround an individual accentuates his abnormal features, creating a
negative societal image. Such abnormal features can be acquired in a number of ways. In the case of
Gregor Samsa, he finds himself waking up in the body of a cockroach, while in an environment
which caters to the human body he had possessed. Literally overnight, basic tasks, become a
challenge to Gregor. In his abnormal body, getting out of bed "became difficult... as he was so
exceptionally broad." (Kafka 9) Kafka displays how Gregor would've normally had "his arms and
his hands to push himself up; but instead of them he only had all those little legs continuously
moving in different directions..." (Kafka 9) Extricating himself from a human environment
highlighted the shortcomings of his new cockroach body. This is shown again when attempting to
return to his room after seeking out the Chief Clerk. Gregor's large flat body provides resistance, so
he "pushed himself into the doorway without regard for what might happen. One side of his body

travel salesman, Gregor still seemed concerned to get to work in order to provide for his family. He
never even speculated the cause of his altered physical state. Gradually, Gregor became used to his
new role as an insect. Aside from late day inquiries of his family regarding his behavior and regular
feeding intervals which allow for minimal interaction, he became largely ignored. After attempting
to save his favorite poster of a woman in fur, chaos took place in the household. He was soon
considered a burdensome nuisance. He had nothing to contribute to the well–being of his family
other than being a pest. Eventually, Gregor 's will to live was crushed by the feelings of self–
contempt and worthlessness. All hopes of returning to normality were squashed with every attempt
he made to interact. His withdrawal from his family guided him further and further into retreat and
isolation. He emotionally dried up within his shell and inside the shadows. Though Gregor's change
was physical, Grete transformed in an emotional way. Her relationship with her brother was

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches' heat preference. What temperature do the roaches really want?

Male hissing cockroaches have horns and females do not. They live 2–5 years in the wild. In
captivity they will eat fruits, vegetables, and dogfood. They live in a colony of roaches. Hissing

begins to wear off. In this coma state the roaches remain inactive and often are on their backs. In
several days it can be determined that they are alive." "Pesticide

Informative Essay On Cockroaches
It's the middle of the night. You're hungry. You go to the kitchen and turn on the light. Suddenly, you
step on something crunchy. You bend down to take a look. It is a cockroach! In New York City, in
all homes and buildings, cockroaches abound. Just like its human residents, New York City 's
roaches are among the most diverse in the world. Cockroaches have been around for millions of
years, evolving into some of the most adaptable pests on Earth. And no matter how hard
exterminators try, the stubborn cockroaches don't seem to die off. In fact, as time progresses,
different species of cockroaches will be discovered and they will become more adaptable to the New
York climate and also resistant to chemical poisons. It is safe to say, we are ... Show more content

Since roaches can crawl through small spaces, its very important we seal these entries. I understand
this can be time consuming, but at the end of the day it will be worth the effort. If we don't stop
them from entering, the next thing we know unwanted guests are partying with us and drinking our
alcoholic beverages ("Orkin").
As long as we (unwillingly) provide food, shelter, and water for cockroaches they will forever infest
our homes. Pest World states that cockroaches are attracted to sweet and floury foods (Cockroach
Extermination). But even if you try to starve these critters, they won't just die off. They'll actually
survive a whole month with no food, but only days without water. It is vital we stop supplying water
to these pests. In addition, a cockroach can hold its breath for 40 minutes and survive underwater for
at least half an hour (Cockroach Extermination). That means they can swim up our drainpipes into
our sinks and bathtubs. We should begin by repairing the tiniest leakages and making sure no water
is left standing in our sinks. Cockroaches are extremely attracted to moist areas even to the smallest
bit of water. For example, New Yorker Ruby Ahuja said: "I used to work in a dry building, and when
I'd leave a cup on my table after washing it out at night, leaving a few drops of water inside, I would
find the cup full of roaches the next morning." What a beautiful sight to see early in the morning.
Furthermore, when it comes to their

A Study On The Respiratory Exchange Essay

  • 1. A Study On The Respiratory Exchange Essay Abstract The characteristics of the phylum, Arthropoda, includes jointed legs and an exoskeleton (Freeman, 2014). The insect the team and I chose to work on were the hissing cockroaches, Gromphadorhina portentosa. Hissing cockroaches are small ectothermic animals and are known to have a tracheal system (Burnaford) that allows them to transfer oxygen into their body. Introduction The organism used in the experiment is a hissing cockroach and the main reason was that cockroaches are arthropods that have a trachea in which is almost similar to humans. Although humans have a trachea which is more of a "wind pipe" structure whereas insects have a tracheae in which is more of a network of air tubes (Bartrim, 2014). The tracheal system has the capacity to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide (Heinrich, 2013) in which the series of branched tubes help deliver oxygen from the environment to the cells (Burnaford, 2016). The respiratory exchange is regulated by the spiracles and this creates three phases of gas exchange (Bartrim, 2014); continuous, cyclic, and discontinuous. The most distinct phase is the discontinuous gas exchange cycle (DGC) because it's the phase that insects must deal with (Heinrich, 2014). The DGC has its own three phases; closed phase, open phase, and the flutter phase (Heinrich, 2014). The hypothesis we had was that the mass of the insect correlates towards respiration. The more mass it has the higher respiration. The dependent variable is the mass of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Bed Bugs Infestation Research Paper Do you have all the signs of a bed bugs infestation? These little unwelcome guests are a pain to get rid of, unless you call the professionals at RCD Exterminating. RCD Exterminating, located in Rochester, NY, knows how to eliminate bed bugs from your residential or commercial space. Bed bugs are tiny reddish brown insects, around four to five millimeters in size, that feed on human blood. They prefer to live around the bed and bedding (hence the name). A female bed bug can lay as much as ten eggs a day over the course of her entire lifetime. So don't wait until a small problem becomes a huge infestation. If you have any signs of bed bugs, it's time to call RCD Exterminating. If your bed has a moldy smell, or a wet towel smell, you may have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Are The Characteristics Of Cockroaches For some people, even the mention of cockroaches sends shivers down their spines. Often, people are reminded of dirtiness when it comes to cockroaches. Worse still, cockroaches are known for spreading diseases such as Salmonellosis, and also triggering allergies and asthma! On top of that, cockroaches also portray another shocking characteristic–cannibalism. Studies have shown cannibalism in six species of cockroaches, including German, American, and Oriental that show cannibalistic tendencies. Unfortunately, the German and American cockroach are most commonly found and seen in Malaysian homes. You may notice some cockroaches found in your home tend to be bigger and some tend to fly while some don't. That's the difference between German and American cockroaches. German cockroaches come in yellowish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Usually, it's the older, stronger cockroaches praying on the young and weak. However, in terms of pest control this survival instinct sometimes doesn't work out for them. If one cockroach has consumed some bait, and then falls victim to being cannibalised, those feeding upon it will also become infected with the effects of the bait. Regulation Another reason behind their cannibalistic instinct is due to self–regulation. Large populations mean less food to go around. Eliminating members of the intrusion means fewer mouths to feed, resulting in more food for everyone else. Usually, this occurs with the females consuming eggs and nymphs when food is scarce. German cockroach nymphs can sometimes avoid being cannibalised by foraging for food during the day. Adult cockroaches usually operate during the night. These nymphs have also developed a pheromone that repels adult cockroaches. It has also been reported that female American cockroaches turn to cannibalism when mating. Just like black widow spiders, female American cockroaches can consume their male partner during ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Characteristics Of The Hissing Cockroaches Analysis: Gromphadorhina portentosa, commonly known as the hissing cockroach, lives within the tropical lowland rainforests of Madagascar among the dry litter on the forest floor. While multiple species of cockroaches have slender like feet, the hissing cockroach has pads and hooks (Figure 3, shows the adaptive hooks/visual description of cockroach). A young cockroach, a nymph, undergoes a process called metamorphosis where its shell sheds periodically to allow for growth. The process evolved approximately 20 million years ago (Figure 1, phylogenetic tree referencing common ancestor). Due to metamorphosis, it undergoes mitotic division of its mycetocytes, special cells that harbour symbiotic microorganisms, approximately 48 hours in a week. The hissing cockroach is an omnivorous scavenger and can consume both organic and inorganic food, although they prefer sweets, meats, and starches. Hissing cockroaches also have cellulase in their saliva, which is meant to break down crystallized cellulose. This trait was developed approximately 10 million years ago, causing two new distinct species (Figure 1, distinct species split). It responds to tactile and wind stimulus by turning away from the stimulus and running. As such, a roach will begin running between 8.2 and gradually to 70.2 m/s after its sensory cells experience stimuli. Conclusion: Evolution, the process by which a species' gene pool changes over time, creates necessary variation in organisms for adaptation to a variety ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wingbeat Frequency Lab Report Group 3 waved at the cockroach when it was flying to observe how the wingbeat frequency and phase relationships would change in response to a sudden visual stimulus. As seen on Chart Trace 2, the duration of the wingbeat cycle for both the left and right hindwing increased substantially, therefore decreasing the wingbeat frequency. When a visual stimulus was added the wingbeat frequency of the hindwings changed from 19.65 hertz to 19.0 hertz. We were only able to retrieve data from the left forewings with the visual stimulus. The change in duration of the wingbeat cycle for the left forewing was not as significant as the hindwings. Cockroach femoral tactile spine is a type I mechanoreceptors and it contains a single bipolar sensory neuron. At the base of the tactile spine, there are afferent neural sensory dendrites which are sensitive to signals. These dendrite in the wall of the spine leads through the spine lumen to a cell body, and then to an axon that proceeds along the femur. One interesting point is that the cell body is surrounded by glial cell however there is no glial cell wrapped around axon body or dendrites. The location of glial wrapping can suggest that they assist in passive conduction action potential from dendrites to the axon. (French 1993). Originally the dendrites are surrounded by fluid called endolymph which is rich in K+. When there is no stimulation there are few movement of ions in and out of the dendrites, this is can be seen in figure 1 as resting spontaneous potential activity. When there is a movement in tactile receptors bristle, the K+ channels open. Due to different concentration of K+ ions across the cell membrane, K+ ions enter the cell, causing the cell to depolarize. These causes increase in neural discharge resulting in increase in number of action potential. • 8. The Cockroach by Kevin Kalligan Kevin Halligan was born in Toronto, Canada in 1964. He regards himself as an Anglophile and has spent long periods of time living in England, but has also travelled in Asia, where this poem, 'The Cockroach', was written. 'The Cockroach', is a short passage of a cockroach and how it made its way around a room, moving in lines and loops. It uses many different forms of imagery to depict the cockroach giving it emotion and character. In this poem he apparently focuses an intense concentration on an insect, but in a powerful twist of focus the whole poem flips back to reveal that Halligan also compares the cockroach to himself, leading the reader to suppose that the cockroach is representational of the poet and of life itself. When looking at a piece of poetry, the first thing that should be analyzed is the title. So in this case, one must speculate why and how Kevin Halligan selected the words he did for his title of the poem: The Cockroach. Firstly the word 'The' gives the reader a sense of a one particular cockroach. Not just any cockroach in general, or all cockroaches, but the single one in this poem, which he describes in intense detail. The cockroach, not a matter usually written about by many poets, provides readers with a sense of inquisitiveness that lures them in, therefore making the title stand out. The standard negative connotation of cockroach being a foul pest has been disregarded. Instead throughout the poem, Halligan's eyes follow the cockroach, recalling all ... • 9. The Metamorphosis Theme "The Metamorphosis" by Kafka presents readers with an intensely claustrophobic and absurd premise featuring a protagonist that is so used to living like an insect and so consumed with guilt that these elements of his life finally take over and lead to his demise. In this world Kafka creates, Gregor lives like an insect even before his metamorphosis and this theme is developed at the beginning of the story when he wakes up to find that he has become what he most resembled in his life. The idea of guilt and scurrying about to please others figures prominently in this text and it is useful to look at the ways in which a compounding sense of guilt leads to Gregor's final resignation to death in Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis. For a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His fate, it seems, is to provide for his family and there are several instances in which he laments his inability to provide for his mother, father, and dear sister. The narrator states, revealing one of these themes in "The Metamorphosis", "Gregor's sole desire was to do his utmost to help the family to forget as soon as possible the catastrophe which had overwhelmed the business and thrown them all into a state of complete despair" (95) and this sense of blind duty compels him to work a meaningless, menial job that has both figuratively and literally turned him into a filthy, scuttling, and helpless insect. While this is true on a more basic level, the root of Gregor's problem stems from a deep–seated feeling of guilt, an emotion that eventually leads to his demise. By the end of the story, Gregor has completely lost his purpose and for a man that once existed simply as a utilitarian creature (again, like an insect since he lives only to fulfill his duty to the group). At one point, his feelings of uselessness are described as, ""Gregor was now cut off from his mother, who was perhaps nearly dying because of him; he dared not open the door for fear of frightening his sister, who had to stay with her mother, there was nothing he could do but wait; and harassed by self– reproach and worry he began to crawl to and fro" (109) and it is clear that the guilt of being useless is mounting and leading to his resignation in the face of ... Majority of the species are no economic importance, inhabiting the floor of tropical, caves, rain forests, deserts, etc (Lee & Ng 2009). 2.1.2 Physical characteristics Most cockroaches are light brown to black color to suit their cryptic, habitat and nocturnal behavior. • 11. Franz Kafka 's The Metamorphosis Selfishness is omnipresent in the context of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Throughout the story, the Samsa family struggle to balance their own lives and the sympathy for Gregor, the only son, as his transformation from human to cockroach leaves a burden on the family and results in the loss of Gregor's humanity. Despite the fact that Gregor had been the sole income of the family, the loss of humanity from becoming a cockroach was overwhelming to the family, resulting in selfish tendencies. Kafka displays how humans are unintentionally selfish, especially when the inability to sympathize diminishes through the family's relationships. Kafka and his domineering father had a strained relationship, in which Kafka's ambitions in literature outraged his father, which profoundly affected his writing. "Whenever Kafka disagreed with his father or told his father that he wanted to be a write, not a shop owner, his father got very upset" (Stephens). Kafka being the only son of the family, was pressured into assuming the role of his father, as women were typically limited to domestic work in the early nineteenth century. The disapproval of Kafka's literature by his father would further lead him to isolation and depression. During his childhood, Kafka's father constantly belittled and abused him as a form of setting him straight, but had not understood the repercussions of his actions which would lead to Kafka's depression and antagonism towards his father. Termites are also considered to be social insects inside their colonies where they work together to bring food and water back to their colonies for survival. • 13. Theme Of The Woodspurge And The Cockroach Rossetti and Halligan both expressed the theme of personal reflection throughout the poems, The Woodspurge and The Cockroach. By using different language effects, the two poets easily convey this theme. The orderly structure of four verses per stanza and eight syllables for most verses in The Woodspurge, gives the reader a dull feeling as it is consistent. The rhyme at the end of each verse also gives a monotonous atmosphere and shows the thought Rossetti wants to convey, stages of grief, something that one won't necessarily want to pay attention to, something that makes people mournful. The only verse that breaks the repetitive eight syllable rhythm is 'the woodspurge flowered, three cups in one'. The sudden change shows that the appearance of the woodspurge made Rossetti realise something important. This may be the fact that his grief and sorrow cannot change his fate, like how the woodspurge will naturally and always have 'three cups in one'. Even though a woodspurge only comes in the colour green, 'flowered' usually gives a feeling of something pretty blossoming, delivering a refreshed and colourful atmosphere, which contrasts from the previous dullness. • 14. Concerns about Human Conditions in Poems, Summer Farm and... The poets Norman MacCaig and Kevin Halligan express their concern about the human condition in the poems 'Summer Farm' and 'The Cockroach'. As they investigate the role and identity of the individual, the theme of self–reflection is revealed. The title of the poem 'Summer Farm' is rather misleading. At first look, it brings us a feeling of warmth and good memories, which are usually related to the summer. 'Farm' evokes the same effect with the addition to the visual imagery of animals and nature. However as we begin reading we realise that 'Summer Farm' is not about a farm as we expected but the reader embarking on a journey of self–reflection. The peacefulness of the atmosphere is now gone and the tone is serious. The poem divides into two parts. The first two stanzas dealing with nature and the last two concentrate on the poet who commences his process of self–reflection. The poem here plots a movement away from the real to the theoretical. In the third stanza the mention of the word 'fear' and the poet's portrayal of himself as a 'pile of selves' add on to a more thoughtful mood. The poem is ended in such a way causing us to feel as though there is more to be said which disturbs us. The use of the word 'dizzy' at the end of MacCaig's chain of thoughts and the start of his 'not thinking' state, makes the reader feel as though the poet has been confused by his own thoughts. The third stanza indicates a change in the focus of the poem, which is the poet himself. In the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Cockroach The discarded skin becomes airborne and can cause severe asthmatic reactions, particularly to children, the elderly and people with bronchial ailments. The cockroach begins as an egg: The female produces an egg sac which she carries or deposits in a safe place. The young cockroach or "nymph" will undergo a series of molts, shedding it's external skeleton, as it grows to adulthood. The entire life cycle may extend to a few months depending on the species and environmental factors, such as, access to food and moisture, adequate shelter and warm temperatures. Even the cleanest homes get'em: Cockroach pests and their eggs are spread throughout the community in food and other packaging. Although sanitation and hygiene are important deterrents, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The presence of cockroaches is often detected by their damage, smell or by the fecal matter (called "frass") they deposit. These are clues which can aid in diagnosing a cockroach problem. Cockroaches may use such things as glue or paste (especially from animal–based materials), starch and certain color dyes as foods. As a result, items such as stamps, envelopes, bindings of older books, draperies and occasionally wallpapers may show signs of feeding. The size of the mandible marks and the apparent degree of vigor with which they feed are indications of the type of roach which did the damage. The size and shape of fecal droppings are also clues to the cockroach species involved. The most important aspect of cockroach damage derives from their habit of feeding and harboring in damp and unsanitary places such as sewers, garbage disposals, kitchens, bathrooms, and storage areas indoors. Filth from these sources is spread by the cockroaches to food supplies, food preparation surfaces, dishes, utensils, and other surfaces. Far more food is contaminated by cockroaches than they are able to eat. Diseases transmitted as a result of these habits were discussed earlier. These same habits are why people are so disgusted and repulsed by the mere presence of cockroaches. For many people, personal disgust and the social stigma attached to cockroaches produce a complete lack of tolerance for any cockroaches in their home or elsewhere. ... • 25. Metamorphosis Theme Essay A major theme that is demonstrated throughout The Metamorphosis, written by Franz Kafka, is the idea of the loss of humanity. This is demonstrated through Gregor's transformation into a cockroach. Any human being would resent the idea of being compared to a cockroach, mainly because it is one of the farthest things from being humane. As a Family and Human studies major, throughout my classes, I have been introduced to many different theories that relate to the various aspects of a human being. Because there are so many different factors that can impact the numerous areas that make up the humanity of a person, it is a complicated subject. Many of the issues that Gregor struggles with throughout the story correspond with issues that humans face on a daily basis. The symptoms that result from Gregor's problems are comparable to those of any person struggling with similar matters. A few of these issues include a state of denial, rejection, and alienation. ... For example, instead of feeling bad for himself, he thinks about his family first. He decides that he will behave in a quiet and patient manner for the family in order to "make the inconveniences he was putting them through in his present state a little bearable for them." (p. 957) It is interesting that, although he is in a much more dreadful state than his family, he still worries about them before himself. Through historical events, the culture and identity of Mexican Americans have shifted, diverted, and adapted into what people chose to identify as. The rise of the Chicano identity during the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement was an adaptation as a culture to oppressive and unjust treatment from white, Anglos that had almost all political and social power over all minorities. To stop the oppressive voices from silencing and oppressing the Mexican Americans, they had to stand up to fight for their rights as American citizens that also had Mexican or Spanish heritage to be proud of. In Oscar Zeta Acosta's novel, The Revolt of the Cockroach People, he dives into the Chicano Movement as a witness and an active participant. His larger than life character is on the front lines of the movement and examines the shift in identity among the group. It was particularly rising of their Chicano identity that gave the people cause to organize politically and socially in order to fight for a worthy cause. One aspect of the Chicano identity that gave rise to the Chicano Movement is the power of reviving gender roles. The revival of the traditional roles gave Chicano men the desire to assert themselves as the dominate gender to conquer the past oppressions from whites. Given the scant knowledge of the mode of action of individual essential oils as well as their mixtures, and of the lack of experimental protocols for these physiological tests, much more work has yet to be undertaken. Although many essential oil compounds have been shown to be toxic or repellent to a range of insects, structure–activity studies in individual insect species provide few insights as to the exact mode of action of these compounds. Many essential oils tested are effective without direct contact (Choi et al. 2003) indicating that delivery of these oils to target tissues occurs through a vapor phase, perhaps through penetration via the respiratory system. It is interesting to note that not all insects are affected by these terpenoids. For some insect species they act as allomones or they mimic insect pheromones representing semiochemical communication between insect and plant, where the evolution of chemical and physical defenses against a diverse insect group by the plant co–evolved with an ability of some insects to detoxify a wide range of plant chemicals. Madagascar hissing cockroaches have a different way of breathing than most other vertebrates, we use a continuous gas exchange while they use a discontinuous gas exchange. Some people work and sacrifice themselves to make others to live comfortable, as it is explicitly emphasized in The Metamorphosis by Kafka. Kafka had very complicated childhood. He did not have splendid relationships neither with his family, or with the society he lived in. That is why he always felt overwhelmed and isolated. The live was not fair to him at all. He used part of his own life story in the Metamorphosis. He did explain beginnings and ends in his great novel. Therefore Metamorphosis still stands as a hidden and arguable story. It is still unclear, why Kafka chose a bug as the burden. But despite this there are some signs of his intensions and feelings. He reveals some of his intentions in the story. Kafka chose symbolical bug to explain his life story. I will probe questions such why a bug? What does the bug represent? How Kafka related Gregor's life to his. Since Kafka does not give an explicit reason about why he chose a cockroach for his story, perhaps it is just an image of his life. Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis as result of his life. While Gregor's transformation into a bug is the catalyst to his physical alienation, Gregor had for years been becoming more and more isolated mentally and emotionally from his family due to his displeasure at his having to work a job he hated due to his father's failings and the lack of gratitude he received from his family for his hard work. When you stop moving forward with your life, only a drastic shift in circumstances can change this progression, as Gregor's metamorphosis demonstrates. In "The Metamorphosis," Kafka utilizes the idea of alienation in a few different contexts: there is the alienation Gregor is experiencing between himself and his identity/well–being, the alienation spawning between himself and his humanity, and the isolation between him and his family. In the text, Gregor has alienated himself from any semblance of a personal identity mostly due to the emphasis he has placed on his work. Gregor's life revolves around work, as it takes precedence over all else. This is evidenced by the lack of a reaction he had towards the discovery of his transformation, instead focusing on how "strenuous" his career is and the repercussions of possibly missing work that day. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, the son of an Egyptian wealthy judge and a Turkish mother The triumphs and failures that are represented by the reception of his enormous output of plays are emblematic of the issues that have confronted the Egyptian drama genre as it has endeavored to adapt its complex modes of communication to Egyptian society. Early life Tawfiq Ismail al–Hakim was born October 9, 1898, in Alexandria to an Egyptian father and Turkish mother. His father, a wealthy peasant, worked as a judge in the judiciary in the village of al– Delnegat, in central Beheira ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in spite of such critical controversies, he continued to write plays with philosophical themes culled from a variety of cultural sources: Pygmalion (1942), an interesting blend of the legends of Pygmalion and Narcissus; Sulayman el–Hakim (Solomon the Wise, 1943), and El–Malik Udib (King Oedipus, 1949). Some of el–Hakim's frustrations with the performance aspect were diverted by an invitation in 1945 to write a series of short plays for publication in newspaper article form. These works were gathered together into two collections, Masrah el–Mugtama (Theatre of Society, 1950) and el–Masrah el– Munawwa (Theatre Miscellany, 1956). The most memorable of these plays is Ughneyyet el–Mawt (Death Song), a one–act play that with masterly economy depicts the fraught atmosphere in Upper Egypt as a family awaits the return of the eldest son, a student in Cairo, in order that he may carry out a murder in response to the expectations of a blood feud. El–Hakim's response to the social transformations brought about by the 1952 revolution, which he later criticized, was the play El Aydi El Na'mah (Soft Hands, 1954). The 'soft hands' of the title refer to those of a prince of the former royal family who finds himself without a meaningful role in the new society, a position in which he is joined by a young academic who has just finished writing a doctoral thesis on the uses of the Arabic preposition hatta. The play explores in an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Cockroach By Liu Yichang In "The Cockroach" by Liu Yichang there are many underlying themes. The theme I chose to focus on was the involvement of the seven deadly sins. The whole story revolves around death and it leaves you wondering why that is, but it ties in to the moral of the story. Ding Pu is surrounded by death and tries to kill the cockroach. But he doesn't allow these deadly sins to take over him, to kill the cockroach. The first character that led me to think the theme followed the seven deadly sins was the first suicide, Zhou Jincai. Rather than him dying because of a deadly sin, I think his lottery winnings led to his death. It first started off with Zhou being greedy, you would need some motive to enter a lottery. Alternatively, the story hints ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But these dreams get more detailed. In her dreams she is usually surrounded by bull and horse demons, these animals are linked with pride, "From then on, grandma frequently saw the Bull–heads and Horse–faces in her dreams" (23). She's also been thrown in a vat of oil and dismembered in her dreams, which links to greed and anger "They made me lie on an iron bed. Then they used giant nails to pin my hands down. They flogged me with an iron whip, until I was raw and lacerated and was bleeding all over... In the centre was a huge pot on top of a blazing fire, bubbling with water and blood... Just when the devils were throwing me in, I woke up" (23). Although the grandma did what she could to be virtuous, it couldn't overlook the sins linked to her. She was prideful in the sense that she did the right thing by becoming a vegetarian, and donated to charity. And she was haunted by the fear that she had sinned and become a person not deemed worthy to leave hell. She was haunted by that fear until her last breath, "'Leave me alone! Don't drag me to Hell! Don't drag me to Hell!' When the three got to her room grandma had already drawn her last breath of life" (26). The third character that succumbed to the deadly sins was the German acrobat, "A german acrobat lost her grip when performing in Kowloon. She fell from mid–air to the ground and died" (29). The acrobat had ten years of experience and after doing her stunt for that long she thought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Angel Isolation Isolation from the world and other people can sometimes be good for people. For those that choose to step back and take a break from the world, isolation can be a time of growth and self– discovery. However, if a person is forced into isolation, like Gregor Samsa and the angel were, it has a completely different effect. For the angel in "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and Gregor Samsa in "The Metamorphosis", their isolation was physical as well as mental. The angel in "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", was locked in a chicken coop for what seems to be several months, constantly being picked at and gawked at by townspeople who had paid to see him. He was a large man with enormous wings living in a tiny space with no meaningful human contact. Although the reader is not able to delve into the mind of the angel and see his thoughts, it is easy to imagine how someone would feel if they were in a strange place, locked in a small chicken coop, and looked upon as a sideshow. In the "Metamorphosis", Gregor Samsa was also locked in a small space for several months. Although he was in a familiar place, after his transition to a bug, he was looked upon by his family as a stranger. He became more and more isolated as the story went on both from his family and his humanity. Although the angel and Gregor were both nonhuman and experienced several months of isolations, they were very different. The angel was described as an old scruffy man with very large wings. Gregor on the other hand was a human man that had completely turned into a bug. There were no physical human characteristics to Gregor once he had turned into a large cockroach. The other characters in the stories also treated the Gregor and the old man very differently. The people in "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", seemed to be a lot more fascinated by the angel than scared of him. People wanted to see the angel and came from all over and even paid money to do so. In The "Metamorphosis", Gregor's family was terrified of him and kept him locked up in his room until he died. Another major difference between the two characters was that in the end of "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings", the angel was freed from the coop, gained his strength ... • 38. Franz Kafka Literary Analysis When a society determines that a group of people is detrimental or dangerous, this designation often comes from an underlying fear concerning that group of people. Social structures respond to this fear by isolating, controlling, or destroying the group of people in question. Franz Kafka juxtaposes Gregor's abnormal body with a conventional human environment to symbolize how society's perceptions of an outcast changes over time. Environmental factors which surround an individual accentuates his abnormal features, creating a negative societal image. Such abnormal features can be acquired in a number of ways. In the case of Gregor Samsa, he finds himself waking up in the body of a cockroach, while in an environment which caters to the human body he had possessed. Literally overnight, basic tasks, become a challenge to Gregor. In his abnormal body, getting out of bed "became difficult... as he was so exceptionally broad." (Kafka 9) Kafka displays how Gregor would've normally had "his arms and his hands to push himself up; but instead of them he only had all those little legs continuously moving in different directions..." (Kafka 9) Extricating himself from a human environment highlighted the shortcomings of his new cockroach body. This is shown again when attempting to return to his room after seeking out the Chief Clerk. Gregor's large flat body provides resistance, so he "pushed himself into the doorway without regard for what might happen. One side of his body ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gregor 's position profoundly changes his self– feelings as well as his relationship with his family. This change of events drastically alters the family 's lifestyle and metamorphoses each member. Despite his condition and dislike for his job as a travel salesman, Gregor still seemed concerned to get to work in order to provide for his family. He never even speculated the cause of his altered physical state. Gradually, Gregor became used to his new role as an insect. Aside from late day inquiries of his family regarding his behavior and regular feeding intervals which allow for minimal interaction, he became largely ignored. After attempting to save his favorite poster of a woman in fur, chaos took place in the household. He was soon considered a burdensome nuisance. He had nothing to contribute to the well–being of his family other than being a pest. Eventually, Gregor 's will to live was crushed by the feelings of self– contempt and worthlessness. All hopes of returning to normality were squashed with every attempt he made to interact. His withdrawal from his family guided him further and further into retreat and isolation. He emotionally dried up within his shell and inside the shadows. Though Gregor's change was physical, Grete transformed in an emotional way. Her relationship with her brother was drastically altered over the course of the story. Initially, she was kind to Gregor in his state. However, after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Informative Essay On Cockroaches It's the middle of the night. You're hungry. You go to the kitchen and turn on the light. Suddenly, you step on something crunchy. Just like its human residents, New York City 's roaches are among the most diverse in the world. In fact, as time progresses, different species of cockroaches will be discovered and they will become more adaptable to the New York climate and also resistant to chemical poisons. It is safe to say, we are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since roaches can crawl through small spaces, its very important we seal these entries. I understand this can be time consuming, but at the end of the day it will be worth the effort. If we don't stop them from entering, the next thing we know unwanted guests are partying with us and drinking our alcoholic beverages ("Orkin"). As long as we (unwillingly) provide food, shelter, and water for cockroaches they will forever infest our homes. Pest World states that cockroaches are attracted to sweet and floury foods (Cockroach Extermination). But even if you try to starve these critters, they won't just die off. They'll actually survive a whole month with no food, but only days without water. It is vital we stop supplying water to these pests. In addition, a cockroach can hold its breath for 40 minutes and survive underwater for at least half an hour (Cockroach Extermination). That means they can swim up our drainpipes into our sinks and bathtubs. We should begin by repairing the tiniest leakages and making sure no water is left standing in our sinks. Cockroaches are extremely attracted to moist areas even to the smallest bit of water. For example, New Yorker Ruby Ahuja said: "I used to work in a dry building, and when I'd leave a cup on my table after washing it out at night, leaving a few drops of water inside, I would find the cup full of roaches the next morning." What a beautiful sight to see early in the morning. Furthermore, when it comes to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
