Hollywood Stereotypes In The Film Fruitvale Station
The film Fruitvale Station begins with real footage of the shooting of Oscar Grant III and looks as if
it will be a documentary but as soon as the shooting occurs the film switches to a family melodrama.
Throughout the film Oscar is shown to be flawed but overall a good person. Oscar cheated on his
girlfriend and has drugs in his room but he is also a loving father and son. We are shown Oscar's
gang tattoos but they are not emphasized or over exaggerated to us. In classic Hollywood films
black families are usually shown to be broken or dysfunctional but Fruitvale Station does not do
this. Oscar's family is a close, tight–knit group that is loving, supportive, and just like every other
family. Oscar's gang involvement and surrounding neighborhood ... Show more content on

The school Tatiana goes to is called First Fruit Learning Center and then Oscar drives past a
Fruitvale Avenue street sign. The train passing by is also often shown throughout the film. When
Oscar witnesses the dog die the train passes by as the dog gets hit by the car. The dog getting hit was
definite foreshadowing of Oscar's later death. The film gradually makes Oscar more complex with a
lot of emotional baggage. The complexity of Oscar is atypical of Hollywood films because usually
people of color are often portrayed as static characters who reflect classic Hollywood stereotypes.
Whenever Oscar gets angry in the film he raises his voice, the sound is amplified, and then there is a
cut to silence. The film utilizes hand–held cameras to create a realistic look. When Oscar decides to
dump the drugs he was going to sell the next scene shows him walking through the child care center
to pick up his daughter. The walk through the child center was an excellent use of mis–en–scene to
symbolize innocence. Oscar is shown running in slow motion while racing his daughter as this
serves as a burst of freedom. In the film Frances Ha running also symbolized freedom. The scene at
Oscar's mother's house had warm tones and colors and the camera editing had lots of tight close–ups

Villains in Hollywood Films Essay
Villains in Hollywood Films
Alfred Hitchcock once said "The better the villain, the better the film" and this year's Hollywood
filmmakers have abided by this golden rule as there was no stopping this year's summer
blockbusters from having a whole horde of villainous characters spreading their wings onto the big
screen, making the darker side more appealing for audiences. Everybody has gone villain this year,
from Tom Cruise to Halle Berry, from the not– so–friendly extra terrestrials in Alien Vs Predator to
Spiderman's sworn enemy Dr Octopus, played by Alfred Molina.
The origin of villains

One movie era portrayed villains from medieval times like the Vikings and evil knights. Villains on
film have evolved devilishly throughout the ages from Nazis to mad scientists, psychopaths,
gangsters, people with super human powers and spies.
How Jaws devoured its way to being Hollywood's first summer blockbuster villain.
Over the years the villain has had to move with the times, but there was one villain created that
made history for he not only devoured his way, sweeping away other villains that were ruling over
the box office, but paved the term "summer movie blockbuster". That villain would be Jaws. Back in
1975 Jaws was a phenomenon upon release, but it was, first and foremost, an exemplary piece of
suspenseful storytelling by a young talented Steven Spielberg, who would later become Hollywood's
most commercial film director. Darth Vader in Star Wars, two years later, might have provided the
evolutionary conclusion of the summer movie villain as a multimedia marketing event – complete
with action figures in every toy shop – but it was Steven Spielberg's sea predator that proved to be a
quantum leap, marketing wise. Even the movie poster was deadly scary to look at: the image of a
female swimmer enjoying the sunny afternoon out at sea with the threatening primal beast in the
background became immediately a classic. So has John William's musical

Jaws: The Quintessence Of Classical Hollywood Film
Almost every Hollywood movie follows a set tradition. The Hollywood movies have recurring
elements in almost everyone. Each Hollywood movie has the same format and setup, but this does
not make it a classical movie like the Wizard of Oz. It is no walk in the park creating a Classical
movie. Jaws is the quintessence of Classical Hollywood Cinema. It is a great suspenseful classical
movie that will beat out the test of time. Two main element in narrative Hollywood cinema are
focusing on main character, and that main character solving a goal. The movie, Jaws, revolves
around Sherriff Brody, and his struggle to protect the beaches from a shark. Once there is a goal
defined, there is opposition. The opposition keeps the protagonist from meeting ... Show more

Psychological events for main characters can motivate them to accomplish their goals. Sherriff
Brody had a traumatizing event when the little boy wearing red shorts is eaten by the shark. The
widow mom blames Sherriff Brody for knowing that there was a shark, and not shutting down the
beaches. A deadline is set for every Hollywood movie. The deadline leads to the emotional climax.
The deadline in Jaws is when they go to kill the shark at the end. Hollywood narrated movies tend to
be shown objectively. This means that the character's actions are what we see. We do not get to be in
the character's psyche all the time. An objective scene in Jaws is when they are sitting around the
campfire and listening to music. A subjective scene is when the shark swims toward the nude girl in
the ocean to eat her. We are able to envision what the shark sees. Finally, Classical Hollywood
Narrative movies like to have closure. There are no cliffhangers or open ended questions once the
movie is over. The main character resolves the issue. In Jaws, Sherriff Brody kills the shark, and
then swims to shore. Classical Hollywood movies tend to follow this

For this essay I intend to discuss how Hollywood as an industry has used the marketing strategies of
blockbuster films to significant advantage in film merchandising. Along with the use of mass
merchandising as a form of marketing films, with the hope of creating awareness among the public.
As merchandising has become one of the most lucrative 'arenas' for Hollywood Studios to earn a

On a much grander scale, The Great Gatsby(1974) which was produced by Robert Evans at
Paramount Studios had a revolutionary merchandising campaign. Robert Evans and Paramount's
then Promotions director Charles O. Glenn assembled a product tie–in scheme valued at $6million.
The purpose of this scheme was to create 'a third level of awareness' for the film. To keep with the
emphasis of the film, four brands where selected to represent the style and romance of the movie.

Film Noir's Influence On Hollywood
The 1940's and the years former were globally some of the hardest times to date. Emerging from the
First World War, the Great Depression, and on the brink of another war, it's no surprise that films of
the time began reflecting the dark and troubled world of the 40's. The rise of Film Noir and its
consequential impact on Hollywood was no small feat, and there is no doubt to Film Noir's
importance in film history. But like any genre, it was developed slowly and surely from those
beforehand. German Expressionism played a large role in forming Film Noir's distinct styles, in
particular the movements' use of visuals to create emotional or psychological responses.
Expressionism sought to bring the human subconscious to view through distorted images ... Show

She was cunning and intelligent, simultaneously maintaining the 'sex appeal' that was never amiss
for women during the time period. Astor balanced the perplexing combination of sugar and spice
that was the epitome of a Femme Fatale, a term many claim was born from this film. Femme Fatales
were reflections of the time, having violated 'traditional roles, values and social order' during
wartime. While the men entered the service, the women entered the workforce, which later stirred
up tension when men returned from the war. Women were often portrayed as powerful in Film Noir
films, becoming a threat to the main noir character. This was exemplified in The Maltese Falcon,
were O'Shaughnessy was successfully able to trick Spade time and again. Spade, in turn, would

the forties breed of femme fatales.
While the expressionist movement epitomized large, monumental moments with extreme
compositions, The Maltese Falcon was a film that was famous for its small, but remarkable
moments. Each gesture, remark or movement, whether by actor, director or camera operator, had a

Hollywood Chinese By Arthur Dong : Film Analysis
Asians have been invisible in Hollywood lead roles. There have been many situations where another
race has played an Asian role. When Asians do land a lead role it is very common to see pay
difference between other ethnicity lead roles. Asian's are very fimilar with service roles and not lead
roles in films. Asian actors are still only a one percent of Hollywood's leading roles. "According to a
study that University of California, Los Angeles did out of the top 100 films in 2015, 49 of those
films did not consist an Asian character and zero leading roles went to Asians (Levin 2017)." Asians
seem be invisible when auditioning for lead roles. There have been many roles that should have
consisted an Asian to play the lead role, but they did not see an appearance. There have been many
situations where white actors have won Oscar's for playing Asian roles. Such as Aline MacMahon
playing a yellowface role in Dragon Seed and Linda Hunt for playing as a Chinese Man in the Year
of Living Dangerously (Vox, 2016). Although these two movies were in the 1940's and 1982, this
situation still hasn't changed up to today's date. In 2010 the Last Airbender casted white actors for
their live–action movie for a famous Asian anime. In 2012 Ashton Kutcher played as an Indian for a
Popchips commercial. The documentary Hollywood Chinese by Arthur Dong is about how white
performers who play Asian roles (Vox, 2016). This documentary mentions how Asians have been

Classical Hollywood Film: The Classical Hollywood Cinema
The Classical Hollywood cinema has style which is difficult and mostly invisible for the average
audience to see. Classical Hollywood narratives are delivered so effortlessly to the audience to a
point that they appear to have no source. In other words, it appears off the screen. The style has been
effective from the 1920s and it convinces us that whatever we see on the screens is real and
sometimes we as the audience have to keep reminding ourselves that it is only a movie not a real
thing. For a movie to follow the Classical Hollywood style, its plots must progress through time in a
linear way, must be based on the main characters and use continuity editing styles. First, the movies
are character driven. The story revolves around the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The main function of mise–en–scene is to manufacture reality. To achieve mise–en–scene, the movie
uses soundtrack and editing together so as to maintain the film continuity (Bordwell, Staiger, &
Thompson, 2006). Tommy is an example of this in the scene where he contracted HIV from a dirty
needle and this led to his death. Though he was a good guy who never used to take heroine, he
became addicted after the breakup. Trainspotting lacks closure that is used in Classical Hollywood
cinemas. In Classical Hollywood movies, the audience can tell what the audience is up to even when
the other characters cannot tell. In Trainspotting, Renton is seen walking away with the cash and
then he says that he is going to change (Welsh, 1996). The audience does not know whether he quit
using heroine for good and if he changed like he said. To gain the full Classical Hollywood Style I
would add scenes showing that Renton did change like he promised after walking away with the
money. This can be done by showing him leading a happy family life free of drugs. The audience
should be aware of what is happening to the main character even if the antagonist and supporting
characters are not aware of what is happening to him as the main

Design for Living (Ernst Lubitsch, 1933) presents a classic hollywood film style with a relatable

struggling between loving two men as they comically fight over her throughout the course of the
film. Gilda Farrell (Miriam Hopkins) meets two men on a train, Tom Chambers (Fredric March) and
George Curtis (Gary Cooper). The film illustrates the creation of the trio's friendship, as well as, a

of Max is oblivious to the mental journey Gilda is experiencing within the scene. The scene begins
with the new couple entering the room, Max following Gilda as the maid closes the door once they
have fully entered. The next shot is a rather long conversation between the two in which they

Gilda's suppressed feeling as it further progresses from shot to shot. Following the sporadic

personalities of Max and Gilda truly shine through. Max slowly appears to notice the change of
attitude within the character of Gilda. When Gilda returns to the floral present cover room, she
kneels to clean up the fallen gift of her two past lovers. This high angle looking down, reveals her
submissive and innocent behaviors as she attempts to repair the plant. This recollection of the plant
pieces is symbolic towards her attempts to reconstruct her past with George and Tom. This blocking

Howard Hawkes's Motifs In New Hollywood Films
Unlike older directors, directors in New Hollywood were both aware of critical film terms like
auteurism and had nearly endless control over their production. In this way, these directors were
often aware of their corpus, and tried to implement their styles into that corpus. One of the earlier
auteurs that French film credits were able to identify was Howard Hawkes. Hawkes, being a classic
Hollywood director, was very limited in that he could not break the established invisible editing. His
auteurisms, therefore, could only be implemented thematically or through certain motifs. One of
Hawks signatures was to cast a funny man as comedic relief. However, in post–production code
New Hollywood, directors began to have almost total control of their corpus. ... Show more content

Even from some of his earliest work, he begins to mold a very individualistic style. His project film
Its not Just you Murray shows the beginnings of his stylistic signatures: discontinuity editing, jump
cuts, and narration. With regards to narration, Scorsese loves to use graphic matches and inserted
photographs to establish the plot. In Its not just you Murray, Scorsese uses a graphic montage to
convey to the viewer the awkwardness of the love triangle between Joe, Murray, and his 'wife'. The
additional use of subtitles is a motif that is also seen throughout his corpus, mainly to introduce a
character or a location. Scorsese introduces Joe this way. Martin Scorsese also distinguishes himself
with auteurs of the past by having virtual no score, but instead using popular songs to set the mood
and pacing of his sequences. With the ease of accessibility, auteurs like Hawks almost exclusively
used an orchestra to produce music. Even later in his career when Scorsese has access to have a
score, he still relies on popular

Can History Be Learned By Watching Hollywood Films?
Can History Be Learned by Watching Hollywood Films? Hollywood films can be a great way to
learn about the past, but how accurate are they? Can you actually find facts about the topic of the
film? I believe that you can learn parts of history through watching Hollywood films and my reasons
for believing that are: People are generally more engaged with motion pictures of topics than long
text about the subject, some movies have great depictions of events that actually take place within
our history, most of the movies you can depict what actually happened rather than the falsification
they put within the film.
Within history classes around the world, there are some that use films for historical events rather
than reading text. Educators believe that the vividness of film can be a valuable teaching tool,
enlivening and reinforcing students' memories for otherwise dry historical text, (Wray, Herbert), I
believe this too. A film that engages your eyesight, brain and hearing is a great way to feel more in
depth within the topic of a film. Using your brain to think about the plot within the film puts a
thought in your brain about it because you're thinking about it, creating your own critiques,
judgements, and thoughts about the events instead of having already written for you. This develops a

Influence Of Hollywood Films
Hollywood Films Influence on Fashion.
During the 1920s and 1930s period, the increase in demand of Hollywood movies and screen idols
became widespread. Popular trends in fashion became no longer influenced only by Paris–based
fashion houses. The hairstyles and clothes worn by glamorous film stars, both on and off the screen,
became noticed by American and European moviegoers and created numerous fashion fads. Fashion
trends in movies were immediately duplicated by retailers. Magazines issued clothing patterns
influenced by film costumes, enabling women to sew together their own Hollywood inspired style
frocks. The era's most copied pattern was a dress worn by Vivien Leigh (1913–1967) in a picnic
scene in Gone with the Wind (1939), one of the era's most popular and publicized movies. By the

The Decline of Classical Hollywood Films
Introduction
The decline of Classical Hollywood films came after the Hollywood Antitrust Case of 1948 as
television audiences dwindled in the wave of television popularity and accessibility and the taste and
interests of viewers which in turn ended the monopoly of Hollywood Studios. To combat this
Hollywood Studios turned it's back on the origins of its creation and headed in a new direction. An
era of film–school educated, liberal filmmakers began in Hollywood where the directors of the films
began to express their personal view and creative insights. These directors and new age film–makers
were heavily influence by the work of the Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave this saw
American film change drastically from its previous eras of filming techniques and saw a whole new
era take over. Many changes happened following the 1948 lawsuit. Which saw the structure of
American cinema completely change and brought a new era which defined the production of films
and had a huge influence on the progression of film. With this, along with the influence of Italian
neo realism and the French new wave, American Cinema grew and grew from Classical styles to
against the grain alternative movies which then flourished into the blockbuster industry those born
in the 80's and 90's grew up with.

Hollywood Films And The Civil Rights Movement Essay
Contemporary American movies reflect on racial issues in American history and strive to present the
latter as a negative experience of the nation. In this respect, Hollywood is a leading film studio that
shoots films about racism prior to the Civil Rights Movement and after it. Both the manner in which
most black characters are portrayed in Hollywood films and ideas conveyed by the latter suggest
that Hollywood's approach to racism is ultimately negative. However, Hollywood films shot in more
recent times and Hollywood's attitude to non–white actors speak about the film studios' hypocritical
approach to racism, as Hollywood's activities indirectly promote racist ideologies spreading in the
US film industry. Hollywood's hypocritical approach to racism is proved by movie characters'
whitening, the white default option, the Oscars' whitewashing, and films' racist depiction of other
races.
Yet, in the second half of the 20th century when the Civil Rights Movement worked on the white
majority's reconsideration of racist perception of the black population, Hollywood shot films that
vividly advocated for the end of racial prejudices in the US society. For example, Norman Jewison's
In the Heat of the Night is the 1967 movie that narrates the story of Virgil Tibbs, a black detective
from Pennsylvania, who faces racial prejudices of the police colleagues in Sparta, Mississippi. In

Blockbusters: Hollywood Film Vs Independent Film
The studio system, thanks to new regulations from Washington in 1948, forced the studios to
restructure and sell off numerous assets. In addition, to stars clamoring for better contracts and the
emergence of television, this opened the door for independent filmmakers to take a shot at making
films that were outside the comfort zone of Hollywood. Independent film was not always known as
such and went under several names such as underground cinema and New York cinema (Marie A.
para 1). The independent films were known by their lack of known actors, their small to medium
budgets, and themes that were uncommon in Hollywood.
As independent films gained a foothold in the 1950's, Hollywood was struggling. This is when
Hollywood looked towards Blockbusters, a term used in theater which is a film that is anticipated to
make high revenues, but uses a large amount of money and resources to achieve this. This is the
antithesis of the independent film where it was often difficult to secure funding, they needed to rely
more on their story and the videography more than on wow factor or high paid actors to draw
crowds in to the theaters. Independent films struggled until the 1980's where it got a boost thanks to

One of the biggest contemporary issues with the Indigenous People is the way they are portrayed in

how the film industry started with how all Indigenous people are always the savages in western

brought up was the fact that most Natives were headband in the film, however, Indigenous people
did not wear headbands in real life. This point can be seen in the 60's and 70's when hippies dressed

The American Civil Rights movement included protests and civil disobedience supporting the cause
of stopping the racial segregation and discrimination of African–Americans. The protesters aimed to
protect the legal and federal rights of people of colour in the USA. The NAACP who were on the
first front of the fight for rights were also focusing of the portrayal of blacks on screen which was
very limited to the old production code developed stereotypes. Representation of black people in the
film industry was an important issue and it was with regards to the presence of African–American
people on and off screen. The NAACP were fighting for the right of black talents to express
themselves and find jobs in the creative film industry. They wanted "accurate" portrayal of the lives
of these people on screen, that do not revolve around stereotypes and portray authentic traits of the
regular African–American. In the book Soul Search Christopher Sieving (2011) talks about the
struggle to find this authenticity as well as prospects and push for this so called "authentic" black

Exploring Hollywood Films Essay
Exploring Hollywood Films
A genre is a certain type of film and they are each defined by certain codes and conventions. Within
a genre there can be different categories these are known as sub–genres, for example, a
psychological thriller. There are also occasions when in a film there may be a combination of more
than one genre this is known as a hybrid. Genre is an excellent way of classifying a film. Audiences
will know what to expect when they go too see a film as they will know if they normally like,
thrillers, for example then they make the choice of seeing it. They also generally guarantee box
office success this is also because of the audience knowing if they will like the film or not. ... Show

Therefore it should have some sort of twist that the audience is not expecting. However not all films
strictly follow the codes and conventions of a certain genre, they change to reflect the changes in
society.
The film 'Mean Girls' is a typical romantic/teen comedy. It uses the general codes and conventions
for example; it has the typical teen romance and also the competition between the girls for the one
boy. It also has the people who are classified as the 'freaks' and those who are the 'popular' group,
who are the cheerleaders; this is typical of a teen comedy. 'Mean Girls' is quite predictable and
formulaic, in the way that it has all of the traditional teen flick characters and the traditional teen
flick story lines. However I still enjoyed it and thought it was funny. This was because even though I
could predict what was going to happen there was one twist in it, which I would not have been able
to predict. The way in which it was written was also very funny, and this makes the audience forget
about the expected plot of the film.
However not all films are predictable, for example, the film SWAT. Which is a hybrid – an action–
adventure/thriller however it does not really follow the strict codes and conventions of an action–
adventure/thriller. It begins with the breaking of the relationship between

Stereotypes In Hollywood Film
The word stereotype comes from the Greek stereos and typos, meaning "solid" and "the mark of a
blow," respectively. It was used in reference to the metal plates that were used to print pages and
came with the connotation of rigidity or sameness (Etymology). By the beginning of the twentieth
century, the word was used to describe rigid or repetitive behavior (Etymology). However, today the
term is usually used when describing oversimplified behaviors that we ascertain to groups of people
based on their race, religion, gender, or ethnicity. These stereotypes were examined further in the
film Hollywood Chinese. The main purpose of Hollywood Chinese was to look at Hollywood films

In this movie series, the main character is a Chinese–American named Charlie Chan. However, in
the movie the character is not played by an Asian actor. The character is played by Warner Oland
who speaks in broken English, has "slanty eyes", and a moustache to look like a typical stereotyped
Chinese person. If there are any real Asian actors, all of them were placed as sidekicks or as extras
in films, which could perhaps suggest that Asians are only second to whites. For example, the
buffoon sons who are played by Asian actors are not as smart or intelligent as the white actor who
plays Charlie Chan. Furthermore, Charlie Chan's broken speech, drowsy eyes, and mannerism also
could indicate that the character is an opium smoker which is again a trait of a stereotypical Chinese
character. However, something that distinguishes Charlie Chan from other films that portrayed the
Chinese culture in earlier films is that it does not portray the Chinese character as someone with a
negative connotation such as a gambler or a mafia member. Regardless, it still perpetuates Chinese
male stereotype, albeit positive, by showing Chan as someone who is intelligent and smart yet at the
same time subservient and

Stereotypes In Hollywood Films
It is said that, in Hollywood film, there are four main stereotypes; Yellow Peril, Dragon Lady,

Hemanta and Simile (2003) shows that, "in contemporary film and television representation, the
four stereotypes of Asians: Yellow Peril, Charlie Chan, Dragon Lady, and Lotus Blossom are still
evident."
Especially, the 'Dragon Lady' stereotype of Asian women has long been portrayed in Hollywood

Citizen Kane: Ahead Of A Classic Hollywood Film
The movie Citizen Kane was ahead of its time and challenged what a classic Hollywood movie was
defined as. The film begins with the death of Kane, and his final word 'rosebud'. A reporter sent to
interview various people close to Kane to discover what 'rosebud' means. The audience is given
various perspectives on the life of Kane through these people and the audience is taken along for the
ride. All movies out at the time had similar lighting and narrative because of the quick factory like
atmosphere in Hollywood studios at the time. Production crews were under pressure from studio
directors to put out movies and make them fast. During times like these directors had to fight to
make their creative voices heard. Among the movies of this era Citizen Kane stood out above the

Instead of having one straight thread of a story, there were various sub stories in the movie that
wove together to build the story of the movie. Usually movies during this era were linear in
storytelling starting from the beginning and going straight to the end. The film Citizen Kane has
multiple stories, it starts in present time and goes back and fourth from present to past as you meet
different characters. The way we see Kane's life story in flashbacks was also innovative to
storytelling. Though flashbacks had been used before, it was not done as well as it was in Citizen
Kane. The way the story is told visually it makes you sympathize with Kane and the film itself has a
dark and mysterious feeling to it. Unlike most movies at the time, the various flashbacks also
contained different emotions since they were told from the point of view of the person remembering
the events. It almost becomes a mystery film as viewers wonder what the meaning of 'Rosebud' is.

The Idea Of Plato's Cave In Hollywood Blockbuster Film

Intro to Philosophy
2/1/17
What has been a directing technique that it easy to miss, yet, so simple that many people do not
notice how it is around everywhere and used in quite a few Hollywood blockbuster films? The
concept of including philosophy into a movie has been in a wide range of films. Philosophy has
been integrated into both US films, and many foreign films. What makes philosophy a great base for
a movie is that there are so many ways include many forms of philosophy into a movie. While you
may not notice it directly, your brain does notice and that is what makes you feel a connection to the
movie. A common philosophy method found in movies is Plato's cave.
Plato's cave is the idea of people living in a cave their entire lives. It is the cave, and its
surroundings are all the people of the cave have ever known. The idea of an outside world is never
questioned. They are pretty much being pulled on strings, like puppets, and they don't live their
lives. The people of Plato's cave almost represent what society would be if there was no philosophy.

Hollywood Film Conventions
When someone says the word "Hollywood", my mind has no problem painting a detailed picture.
Films with grand orchestras, multi–million–dollar lighting, costumes, and makeup, big name actors;
these things all come to mind. However, in the third chapter of Bordwell and Thompson's Film Art,
a set of conventions considered to be part of classical Hollywood filmmaking are listed. These
conventions are tagged on to what we would expect to see in a classical Hollywood film. They are
included in the themes and elements of the plot and narrative that we have come to expect from the
films that we watch and love, but may not often be consciously consider. One of my favorite films,

There are several major conflicts that are introduced within the first ten minutes of the film and
continue to be major themes throughout the entirety of the film. The first conflict that is introduced
exists between Neil Perry and his father. The conflict here originates from a discord between the
desires of Neil for himself, and the desires that his father has for him. Neil wants to act in a play and
edit for the school annual; his desires are not purely academic. This clashes with the desires of his
father, which are purely academic. Neil's father tells him that he believes he is taking too many
extracurricular activities and demands that he quit the school annual. His father only wants his son
to be accepted into medical school, and does not consider his happiness. Neil, however, becomes
inspired to "seize the day" by his teach Mr. Keating, and does something that he loves to do–he
auditions for the community play. This escalates the conflict, as Neil's father sees this action as
foolish and a waste of time. Their opposing views about what is right for Neil propel this conflict to
the very end of the film–and to the end of Neil's life. Another conflict that seems to be a major plot
point in this film is between Mr. Keating, the new and energetic English teacher, and the senior
teachers. It is apparent after only a few scenes how different Keating's methodology is from that of
his colleagues, and it is also apparent how much these differences clash with one another. These
differences are stressed throughout the film–while other professors are portrayed as uptight, strict
and conservative, Mr. Keating is portrayed as easy–going, kind, and energetic. Eventually, it is Mr.
Keating's unordinary style that gets him into trouble; he is blamed for the death of Neil Perry and is

Hollywood Film Analysis
The classic Hollywood movie was dominated by a misogynistic view of sex and gender. The
Hollywood film rose rapidly as one of the highest earning industries in America in the early
twentieth century. As a result of the traditional patriarchal society of the era it was the men who
owned the studios, the men who wrote the scripts, the men who worked behind the scenes, and the
men who held the leading roles that dominated the industry. In this paper, I will discuss in brief my
experience in viewing the short film by Tracy Moffatt (2003). Second, examine the feminist theories
of Mulvey (1975) that provide a psychoanalysis of the 'male gaze' and how these views of sex and
gender were placed in the movie. Finally, I will provide a counter ... Show more content on

The criteria of this theory examined how women's roles were perceived, were they passive or active,
did they receive adequate screen time and were their roles stereotypical of the female genre, did the
roles 'reinforce sexism'. In addition, in its infancy, this theory examined the meaning of the text and
what affects they had on the audience and the primary focus on the 'male gaze' and 'spectatorship'.
Moreover, Laura Mulvey's essay, 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' (1975), Mulvey applied
the psychoanalysis theories of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan and combined them with feminist
theory to analyse the woman's role in film. Mulvey argues that women play roles that are passive
and women are only used as a 'visual pleasure' to accompany the 'male actor', that is to say, the
woman's role is to highlight the 'patriarchal order' of the male, hence the woman is 'objectified and
exploited'. According to Mulvey, this manifests in the way the male actor perceives the female actor
and the character she plays. The 'male gaze' is defined in three points made by Mulvey, the man
behind the camera, the male representation in the film, and the male spectator. In addition, Mulvey
argues, that the female character has an impact on the audience both male and female. These passive
female roles reinforce the patriarchal view on the male audience and his

cases, film industry shows the viewer want they would like to see and what is more convenient, and

The Use Of Music In Hollywood Film Music
Though these aforementioned motifs are used quite extensively in Hollywood film music, the use of
music to augment the cinematic scene in Hollywood films is seen most noticeably during instances
of grandeur and opulence. To accompany these scenes, the film scorers elect to use large ensembles,
with each family of instrument partaking in the production. This correlation has become a staple in
Hollywood films, as "orchestral size not only indicated musical choice or financial well–being but
became a status symbol for the music director" (Morcom 70). Such an implementation of emotional
mimicry is found in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Twin Towers, when Howard Shore's
"Helm's Deep" played during the Helms Deep Charge. In the middle of the Rohirrim charge at
Helms Deep, Gandalf the White presents himself at the top of the hill on a great white stallion.
Gandalf is magnificence personified, so the choice in musical accompaniment simply strengthens
the delivery of this fact to the audience. Therefore, as seen from all three previously discussed
styles, there exists a pattern in the field of music, where an inherent sense of strategy and intention is
employed when selecting the notes in a piece. In American culture, the general view of film music is
that "song sequences, seen as distractions, cast doubt on a film's narrative authenticity by limiting
creativity, plot development, and characterization, resulting in a genre that appears to lack cinematic
realism as compared to

The Hollywood Film: The Convention Of Happy Ending
Carl Plantinga says that in Hollywood films "the convention of the happy ending makes it likely that
empathy will bring the rewards of a favor–able outcome for the protagonists; thus our emotional
investment will likely yield psychologically pleasing results". It is true that if you create a story with
likeable characters and a pleasing outcome, you are more likely to create a more enjoyable
experience based on the emotional attachments an audience may or may not have. If the phrase is
not self–explanatory already, the 'happy ending' must require that either a film's characters, the
audience or both are left 'happy' by the conclusion. Characters' happiness and audiences' happiness
are completely different in this case, even if they overlap in occurrence. A question that the author
raises in this chapter is, "do 'happy endings' occur when a film leaves its protagonist in a state of
happiness?" In my opinion, I agree with James
MacDowell, the author of this book, when he says that both audience and protagonist need to be in
sync to have a cohesive and true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

narrative. This is not to say that some of the greatest known films in cinema have narrative that end

the main conflict in general. We see this in the film Baby Driver (2017) by Edgar Wright. We are
presented with such an intriguing conflict that falls behind the 'happy ending' trope. Such choices
can make a story feel forced, unnatural or even lengthy in run–time. I do feel that it is true that our
own familiarity with the final couple likely ensures that it is part of the rhetoric to an ending. It

King Kong : Aspects Of A Hollywood Film

was this a pioneering film, but it also set a guide or standard for every one of the succeeding horror,
animation, and thriller genres that have been produced in Hollywood today. Aspects of King Kong
are seen in many movies today. Theme originality completely escapes the mind. Taken into
consideration, the predominant technology available at the time of production was something of an
innovation. In this case, King Kong should be placed in the top of the special effects editing of the
1930s. Willis O'Brien's stop–motion animatronics was a significant feat at the time. A few years
earlier before King Kong, O'Brien worked as Special
Effects Animator in the film of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World", which also utilized stop
motion effects and saw dinosaurs on screen in a naturalistic environment. Roger Ebert, a famous
movie critic, once said "In recent years I have focused on the remarkable special effects, based by
Willis O'Brien and others on his f/x work in "The Lost World" (1925) but achieving a sophistication

there is evidence that suggests that stigmas may inhibit individuals' willingness to pursue mental
health. (Aguiniga, Madden & Zellman 2016). The unwillingness to receive mental health care could
be a result of the media's negative representation of the disorder. With mental illness, people tend to
feel alone, isolated, and different. As media sources amplify these feelings, people can often become
ashamed of themselves and also their disorders. Individuals suffering from a mental disorder could
perceive themselves at risk of becoming further isolated from society, as media is constantly

How Does Hollywood Portray Minorities In Film
Hollywood has been classically known to portray minorities in a negative light. Many times they

many minorities as the villains or laughing stocks within popular films can only lead to the
American people associating the minorities with the things they see in the movies. Today's most

The American Civil Rights movement included protests and civil disobedience supporting the cause
of stopping the racial segregation and discrimination of African–Americans. The protesters aimed to
protect the legal and federal rights of people of colour in the USA. The NAACP who were on the

and selling it to their audiences started to become popular and yielded positive results (VanDerploeg
24). The star system was one of the key economic strategies that helped production companies find
new talent for their movies and helped audiences differentiated movies from competing studios.
While it was primary created to effectively promote their movies, the star system was also the "basis
for a hierarchical division of labour in the Hollywood film industry". This meant that it allowed
Hollywood executives to have power over both their actor's career decisions and their general lives
(Holmes 99). Although all actors were affected by this, women were the main victims of
exploitation and trauma in the work place. Throughout the "Golden Age of Hollywood", actresses
have been highly mistreated by studio executives. Components of the star system left a physical and
emotional toll onto female performers, and it was only through their plight that certain workforce
were developed.

Classical Hollywood Film 'Martin Singin' In The Rain
Classical Hollywood Cinema Classical Hollywood Cinema is a small group of characters; the films
have strong small individual characters. Moreover, those groups seem to have problems, and those
problems will be solved by the ending of the film. There is also clear cause and effect in this style of
films, basically means that the "good person" will be rewarded at the end of the movie and the "bad
person" will either die or get punished for what he/she did throughout the movie. Classic Hollywood
Cinema style is so effective in convincing us in what we see in the screen is real that sometimes we
have to remind ourselves that it is just a movie. Also, viewers can not really see the motivation of
the movie; they consider themselves as a part of the movie. Classic Hollywood Cinema films have
almost one purpose: is to have a good time at the movie theater and leave the theater without having
to think critically about the characters' actions and making judgments. ... Show more content on

But how does it fit this model of films?. The narrative, editing, and even mise–en–scene create the
overall classic Hollywood film narrative. Also, almost all Classical Hollywood Cinema model
follow a basic plot. The good person wins, the bad person is exposed and punished, guy gets the girl,
mother finds her son, and the viewer is able to handle and predict the ending. Singin' in the Rain
depicts a classic Hollywood film narrative because of these factors as explained above. Also, one of
the main focuses of the movie is on the transition from silence movie to talking pictures or movies
with sound. This movie is the most entertaining movies, almost every scene is filed with amazing

Hollywood Stereotypes In The Film Fruitvale Station

  • 1. Hollywood Stereotypes In The Film Fruitvale Station The film Fruitvale Station begins with real footage of the shooting of Oscar Grant III and looks as if it will be a documentary but as soon as the shooting occurs the film switches to a family melodrama. Throughout the film Oscar is shown to be flawed but overall a good person. Oscar cheated on his girlfriend and has drugs in his room but he is also a loving father and son. We are shown Oscar's gang tattoos but they are not emphasized or over exaggerated to us. In classic Hollywood films black families are usually shown to be broken or dysfunctional but Fruitvale Station does not do this. Oscar's family is a close, tight–knit group that is loving, supportive, and just like every other family. Oscar's gang involvement and surrounding neighborhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The school Tatiana goes to is called First Fruit Learning Center and then Oscar drives past a Fruitvale Avenue street sign. The train passing by is also often shown throughout the film. When Oscar witnesses the dog die the train passes by as the dog gets hit by the car. The dog getting hit was definite foreshadowing of Oscar's later death. The film gradually makes Oscar more complex with a lot of emotional baggage. The complexity of Oscar is atypical of Hollywood films because usually people of color are often portrayed as static characters who reflect classic Hollywood stereotypes. Whenever Oscar gets angry in the film he raises his voice, the sound is amplified, and then there is a cut to silence. The film utilizes hand–held cameras to create a realistic look. When Oscar decides to dump the drugs he was going to sell the next scene shows him walking through the child care center to pick up his daughter. The walk through the child center was an excellent use of mis–en–scene to symbolize innocence. Oscar is shown running in slow motion while racing his daughter as this serves as a burst of freedom. In the film Frances Ha running also symbolized freedom. The scene at Oscar's mother's house had warm tones and colors and the camera editing had lots of tight close–ups which ... Villains in Hollywood Films Essay Villains in Hollywood Films Alfred Hitchcock once said "The better the villain, the better the film" and this year's Hollywood filmmakers have abided by this golden rule as there was no stopping this year's summer blockbusters from having a whole horde of villainous characters spreading their wings onto the big screen, making the darker side more appealing for audiences. Everybody has gone villain this year, from Tom Cruise to Halle Berry, from the not– so–friendly extra terrestrials in Alien Vs Predator to Spiderman's sworn enemy Dr Octopus, played by Alfred Molina. The origin of villains Villains have been around since evil has walked the earth. People have been creating villains ever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One movie era portrayed villains from medieval times like the Vikings and evil knights. Villains on film have evolved devilishly throughout the ages from Nazis to mad scientists, psychopaths, gangsters, people with super human powers and spies. How Jaws devoured its way to being Hollywood's first summer blockbuster villain. Over the years the villain has had to move with the times, but there was one villain created that made history for he not only devoured his way, sweeping away other villains that were ruling over the box office, but paved the term "summer movie blockbuster". That villain would be Jaws. Back in 1975 Jaws was a phenomenon upon release, but it was, first and foremost, an exemplary piece of suspenseful storytelling by a young talented Steven Spielberg, who would later become Hollywood's most commercial film director. Darth Vader in Star Wars, two years later, might have provided the evolutionary conclusion of the summer movie villain as a multimedia marketing event – complete with action figures in every toy shop – but it was Steven Spielberg's sea predator that proved to be a quantum leap, marketing wise. Even the movie poster was deadly scary to look at: the image of a female swimmer enjoying the sunny afternoon out at sea with the threatening primal beast in the background became immediately a classic. So has John William's musical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Jaws: The Quintessence Of Classical Hollywood Film Almost every Hollywood movie follows a set tradition. The Hollywood movies have recurring elements in almost everyone. Each Hollywood movie has the same format and setup, but this does not make it a classical movie like the Wizard of Oz. It is no walk in the park creating a Classical movie. Jaws is the quintessence of Classical Hollywood Cinema. It is a great suspenseful classical movie that will beat out the test of time. Two main element in narrative Hollywood cinema are focusing on main character, and that main character solving a goal. The movie, Jaws, revolves around Sherriff Brody, and his struggle to protect the beaches from a shark. Once there is a goal defined, there is opposition. The opposition keeps the protagonist from meeting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Psychological events for main characters can motivate them to accomplish their goals. Sherriff Brody had a traumatizing event when the little boy wearing red shorts is eaten by the shark. The widow mom blames Sherriff Brody for knowing that there was a shark, and not shutting down the beaches. A deadline is set for every Hollywood movie. The deadline leads to the emotional climax. The deadline in Jaws is when they go to kill the shark at the end. Hollywood narrated movies tend to be shown objectively. This means that the character's actions are what we see. We do not get to be in the character's psyche all the time. An objective scene in Jaws is when they are sitting around the campfire and listening to music. A subjective scene is when the shark swims toward the nude girl in the ocean to eat her. We are able to envision what the shark sees. Finally, Classical Hollywood Narrative movies like to have closure. There are no cliffhangers or open ended questions once the movie is over. The main character resolves the issue. In Jaws, Sherriff Brody kills the shark, and then swims to shore. Classical Hollywood movies tend to follow this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If a person can tell me the idea in twenty–five words or less, its going to make a pretty good movie." Steven Spielberg.' For this essay I intend to discuss how Hollywood as an industry has used the marketing strategies of blockbuster films to significant advantage in film merchandising. Along with the use of mass merchandising as a form of marketing films, with the hope of creating awareness among the public. The book turned into a huge success, and spent nine months on the New York Times bestseller list. The book created a high level of anticipation for the film, which was released the following Christmas. The horror film The Omen (1976) further demonstrated the power of novelisations. The book sold over 3 million paperback copies of the book during the release of the film. On a much grander scale, The Great Gatsby(1974) which was produced by Robert Evans at Paramount Studios had a revolutionary merchandising campaign. Robert Evans and Paramount's then Promotions director Charles O. Glenn assembled a product tie–in scheme valued at $6million. The purpose of this scheme was to create 'a third level of awareness' for the film. To keep with the emphasis of the film, four brands where selected to represent the style and romance of the movie. These where Ballantine's Scotch, Glemby hairstyling studios, Robert Bruce's men's sportswear, and du Pont's 'classic white' line in cookware. Thou this merchandising campaign was revolutionary, F. Scott Fitzgerald's daughter complained that "you have turned The Great Gatsby into pots and pans," Paramount was able to emtablish the nostalgic, romantic image of the film, as evidenced by the strong exhibitor advances, through these extensive promotions. • 9. Film Noir's Influence On Hollywood The 1940's and the years former were globally some of the hardest times to date. Emerging from the First World War, the Great Depression, and on the brink of another war, it's no surprise that films of the time began reflecting the dark and troubled world of the 40's. The rise of Film Noir and its consequential impact on Hollywood was no small feat, and there is no doubt to Film Noir's importance in film history. But like any genre, it was developed slowly and surely from those beforehand. Femme Fatales were reflections of the time, having violated 'traditional roles, values and social order' during wartime. While the men entered the service, the women entered the workforce, which later stirred up tension when men returned from the war. Women were often portrayed as powerful in Film Noir films, becoming a threat to the main noir character. This was exemplified in The Maltese Falcon, were O'Shaughnessy was successfully able to trick Spade time and again. Spade, in turn, would simply state, "You're good. You're very good." One of the two plot twists revolves around O'Shaughnessy, revealing the final piece of her true character, and cementing her role as the first of the forties breed of femme fatales. Hollywood became an overnight success during the 1920's by making improvements in the film and motion picture industry. The other known device was a stop sign that would pop up whenever the brake pedal was pushed. • 13. Hollywood Chinese By Arthur Dong : Film Analysis Asians have been invisible in Hollywood lead roles. There have been many situations where another race has played an Asian role. When Asians do land a lead role it is very common to see pay difference between other ethnicity lead roles. Asian's are very fimilar with service roles and not lead roles in films. Asian actors are still only a one percent of Hollywood's leading roles. "According to a study that University of California, Los Angeles did out of the top 100 films in 2015, 49 of those films did not consist an Asian character and zero leading roles went to Asians (Levin 2017)." Asians seem be invisible when auditioning for lead roles. There have been many roles that should have consisted an Asian to play the lead role, but they did not see an appearance. There have been many situations where white actors have won Oscar's for playing Asian roles. Such as Aline MacMahon playing a yellowface role in Dragon Seed and Linda Hunt for playing as a Chinese Man in the Year of Living Dangerously (Vox, 2016). Although these two movies were in the 1940's and 1982, this situation still hasn't changed up to today's date. In 2010 the Last Airbender casted white actors for their live–action movie for a famous Asian anime. In 2012 Ashton Kutcher played as an Indian for a Popchips commercial. • 15. Classical Hollywood Film: The Classical Hollywood Cinema The Classical Hollywood cinema has style which is difficult and mostly invisible for the average audience to see. Classical Hollywood narratives are delivered so effortlessly to the audience to a point that they appear to have no source. In other words, it appears off the screen. The style has been effective from the 1920s and it convinces us that whatever we see on the screens is real and sometimes we as the audience have to keep reminding ourselves that it is only a movie not a real thing. Though he was a good guy who never used to take heroine, he became addicted after the breakup. Trainspotting lacks closure that is used in Classical Hollywood cinemas. In Classical Hollywood movies, the audience can tell what the audience is up to even when the other characters cannot tell. In Trainspotting, Renton is seen walking away with the cash and then he says that he is going to change (Welsh, 1996). The audience does not know whether he quit using heroine for good and if he changed like he said. To gain the full Classical Hollywood Style I would add scenes showing that Renton did change like he promised after walking away with the money. The film illustrates the creation of the trio's friendship, as well as, a love triangle forms. Howard Hawkes's Motifs In New Hollywood Films Unlike older directors, directors in New Hollywood were both aware of critical film terms like auteurism and had nearly endless control over their production. In this way, these directors were often aware of their corpus, and tried to implement their styles into that corpus. One of the earlier auteurs that French film credits were able to identify was Howard Hawkes. Hawkes, being a classic Hollywood director, was very limited in that he could not break the established invisible editing. His auteurisms, therefore, could only be implemented thematically or through certain motifs. One of Hawks signatures was to cast a funny man as comedic relief. In Its not just you Murray, Scorsese uses a graphic montage to convey to the viewer the awkwardness of the love triangle between Joe, Murray, and his 'wife'. The additional use of subtitles is a motif that is also seen throughout his corpus, mainly to introduce a character or a location. Scorsese introduces Joe this way. Can you actually find facts about the topic of the film? I believe that you can learn parts of history through watching Hollywood films and my reasons for believing that are: People are generally more engaged with motion pictures of topics than long text about the subject, some movies have great depictions of events that actually take place within our history, most of the movies you can depict what actually happened rather than the falsification they put within the film. Within history classes around the world, there are some that use films for historical events rather than reading text. Educators believe that the vividness of film can be a valuable teaching tool, enlivening and reinforcing students' memories for otherwise dry historical text, (Wray, Herbert), I believe this too. A film that engages your eyesight, brain and hearing is a great way to feel more in depth within the topic of a film. Popular trends in fashion became no longer influenced only by Paris–based fashion houses. The hairstyles and clothes worn by glamorous film stars, both on and off the screen, became noticed by American and European moviegoers and created numerous fashion fads. Fashion trends in movies were immediately duplicated by retailers. Magazines issued clothing patterns influenced by film costumes, enabling women to sew together their own Hollywood inspired style frocks. The era's most copied pattern was a dress worn by Vivien Leigh (1913–1967) in a picnic scene in Gone with the Wind (1939), one of the era's most popular and publicized movies. • 25. The Decline of Classical Hollywood Films Introduction The decline of Classical Hollywood films came after the Hollywood Antitrust Case of 1948 as television audiences dwindled in the wave of television popularity and accessibility and the taste and interests of viewers which in turn ended the monopoly of Hollywood Studios. To combat this Hollywood Studios turned it's back on the origins of its creation and headed in a new direction. An era of film–school educated, liberal filmmakers began in Hollywood where the directors of the films began to express their personal view and creative insights. These directors and new age film–makers were heavily influence by the work of the Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave this saw American film change drastically from its previous eras of filming techniques and saw a whole new era take over. Many changes happened following the 1948 lawsuit. • 27. Hollywood Films And The Civil Rights Movement Essay Contemporary American movies reflect on racial issues in American history and strive to present the latter as a negative experience of the nation. In this respect, Hollywood is a leading film studio that shoots films about racism prior to the Civil Rights Movement and after it. Both the manner in which most black characters are portrayed in Hollywood films and ideas conveyed by the latter suggest that Hollywood's approach to racism is ultimately negative. However, Hollywood films shot in more recent times and Hollywood's attitude to non–white actors speak about the film studios' hypocritical approach to racism, as Hollywood's activities indirectly promote racist ideologies spreading in the US film industry. Hollywood's hypocritical approach to racism is proved by movie characters' whitening, the white default option, the Oscars' whitewashing, and films' racist depiction of other races. Yet, in the second half of the 20th century when the Civil Rights Movement worked on the white majority's reconsideration of racist perception of the black population, Hollywood shot films that vividly advocated for the end of racial prejudices in the US society. For example, Norman Jewison's In the Heat of the Night is the 1967 movie that narrates the story of Virgil Tibbs, a black detective from Pennsylvania, who faces racial prejudices of the police colleagues in Sparta, Mississippi. Independent film was not always known as such and went under several names such as underground cinema and New York cinema (Marie A. para 1). The independent films were known by their lack of known actors, their small to medium budgets, and themes that were uncommon in Hollywood. As independent films gained a foothold in the 1950's, Hollywood was struggling. This is when Hollywood looked towards Blockbusters, a term used in theater which is a film that is anticipated to make high revenues, but uses a large amount of money and resources to achieve this. This is the antithesis of the independent film where it was often difficult to secure funding, they needed to rely more on their story and the videography more than on wow factor or high paid actors to draw crowds in to the theaters. Furthermore, Charlie Chan's broken speech, drowsy eyes, and mannerism also could indicate that the character is an opium smoker which is again a trait of a stereotypical Chinese character. However, something that distinguishes Charlie Chan from other films that portrayed the Chinese culture in earlier films is that it does not portray the Chinese character as someone with a negative connotation such as a gambler or a mafia member. The Hollywood film rose rapidly as one of the highest earning industries in America in the early twentieth century. As a result of the traditional patriarchal society of the era it was the men who owned the studios, the men who wrote the scripts, the men who worked behind the scenes, and the men who held the leading roles that dominated the industry. In this paper, I will discuss in brief my experience in viewing the short film by Tracy Moffatt (2003). Moreover, Laura Mulvey's essay, 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema' (1975), Mulvey applied the psychoanalysis theories of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan and combined them with feminist theory to analyse the woman's role in film. Mulvey argues that women play roles that are passive and women are only used as a 'visual pleasure' to accompany the 'male actor', that is to say, the woman's role is to highlight the 'patriarchal order' of the male, hence the woman is 'objectified and exploited'. According to Mulvey, this manifests in the way the male actor perceives the female actor and the character she plays. The 'male gaze' is defined in three points made by Mulvey, the man behind the camera, the male representation in the film, and the male spectator. When it comes to surf culture, media and film industry have played a significant role on the representation of the surfing and the surfers. In the non–surfer crowd's mind, the surf culture is defined by the way that the media and the surf related movies represent it and in the most cases, film industry shows the viewer want they would like to see and what is more convenient, and not the truth and the reality. • 57. The Use Of Music In Hollywood Film Music Though these aforementioned motifs are used quite extensively in Hollywood film music, the use of music to augment the cinematic scene in Hollywood films is seen most noticeably during instances of grandeur and opulence. To accompany these scenes, the film scorers elect to use large ensembles, with each family of instrument partaking in the production. This correlation has become a staple in Hollywood films, as "orchestral size not only indicated musical choice or financial well–being but became a status symbol for the music director" (Morcom 70). Such an implementation of emotional mimicry is found in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Twin Towers, when Howard Shore's "Helm's Deep" played during the Helms Deep Charge. In the middle of the Rohirrim charge at Helms Deep, Gandalf the White presents himself at the top of the hill on a great white stallion. Gandalf is magnificence personified, so the choice in musical accompaniment simply strengthens the delivery of this fact to the audience. Therefore, as seen from all three previously discussed styles, there exists a pattern in the field of music, where an inherent sense of strategy and intention is employed when selecting the notes in a piece. In American culture, the general view of film music is that "song sequences, seen as distractions, cast doubt on a film's narrative authenticity by limiting creativity, plot development, and characterization, resulting in a genre that appears to lack cinematic realism as compared to ... • 59. The Hollywood Film: The Convention Of Happy Ending Carl Plantinga says that in Hollywood films "the convention of the happy ending makes it likely that empathy will bring the rewards of a favor–able outcome for the protagonists; thus our emotional investment will likely yield psychologically pleasing results". It is true that if you create a story with likeable characters and a pleasing outcome, you are more likely to create a more enjoyable experience based on the emotional attachments an audience may or may not have. If the phrase is not self–explanatory already, the 'happy ending' must require that either a film's characters, the audience or both are left 'happy' by the conclusion. Characters' happiness and audiences' happiness are completely different in this case, even if they overlap in occurrence. A question that the author raises in this chapter is, "do 'happy endings' occur when a film leaves its protagonist in a state of happiness?" In my opinion, I agree with James MacDowell, the author of this book, when he says that both audience and protagonist need to be in sync to have a cohesive and true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most scholars refer to as a male and female coming together in a romantic happy ending as a closed narrative. This is not to say that some of the greatest known films in cinema have narrative that end in such a manor. It is however easy to see an initial conflict evolve into a romance, thus disregarding the main conflict in general. We see this in the film Baby Driver (2017) by Edgar Wright. We are presented with such an intriguing conflict that falls behind the 'happy ending' trope. Such choices can make a story feel forced, unnatural or even lengthy in run–time. Every aspect of the film is a trademark of Hollywood film elements. Not only was this a pioneering film, but it also set a guide or standard for every one of the succeeding horror, animation, and thriller genres that have been produced in Hollywood today. Aspects of King Kong are seen in many movies today. Theme originality completely escapes the mind. Taken into consideration, the predominant technology available at the time of production was something of an innovation. In this case, King Kong should be placed in the top of the special effects editing of the 1930s. Willis O'Brien's stop–motion animatronics was a significant feat at the time. A few years earlier before King Kong, O'Brien worked as Special Effects Animator in the film of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World", which also utilized stop motion effects and saw dinosaurs on screen in a naturalistic environment. Roger Ebert, a famous movie critic, once said "In recent years I have focused on the remarkable special effects, based by Willis O'Brien and others on his f/x work in "The Lost World" (1925) but achieving a sophistication and beauty that eclipsed anything that went before". It explains that there is evidence that suggests that stigmas may inhibit individuals' willingness to pursue mental health. (Aguiniga, Madden & Zellman 2016). The unwillingness to receive mental health care could be a result of the media's negative representation of the disorder. With mental illness, people tend to feel alone, isolated, and different. As media sources amplify these feelings, people can often become ashamed of themselves and also their disorders. Individuals suffering from a mental disorder could perceive themselves at risk of becoming further isolated from society, as media is constantly depicting mental disorders and something to be feared and ashamed of. If media could reduce the negative depiction of mental health, people may be more willing to seek mental health, as they can feel confident society will not further isolate them from the support they need the ... Permissiveness and conceptual incongruity in Blaxploitation films concerning the shaping and portrayal of the female character exemplified in the works of Pam Grier. A new step for the Hollywood film industry from 1968 till nowadays is the creation of the MPAA film rating system. Ever since the erasure of the production code of the Classic Hollywood era, and filmmakers' realisation that they do not need the seal of approval, it has become possible to show or tell anything on screen. Film genres like horror for examples thrived as they tested the new limits of the horror experience. The American Civil Rights movement included protests and civil disobedience supporting the cause of stopping the racial segregation and discrimination of African–Americans. The protesters aimed to protect the legal and federal rights of people of colour in the USA. The NAACP who were on the first front of the fight for rights were also focusing of the portrayal of blacks on screen which was very limited to the old production code developed stereotypes. Representation of black people in the film industry was an important issue and it was with regards to the presence of African–American people on and off screen. The NAACP were fighting for the right of black talents to express themselves and find jobs in the creative film industry. They wanted "accurate" portrayal of the lives of these people on screen, that do not revolve around stereotypes and portray authentic traits of the regular African–American. In the book Soul Search Christopher Sieving (2011) talks about the struggle to find this authenticity as well as prospects and push for this so called "authentic" black cinema that could emerge from the major studio network and the career opportunities for black people. • 73. The Film Industry : The Golden Age Of Hollywood The film industry, like all industries, is an economical institution that strives to make money out of their creative projects. In the early years of Hollywood, studios were still trying to figure out methods that would turn the most profit. Vertical integration allowed companies included in the Big Five to produce, distribute, and exhibit their own films, but they needed to find a way to maintain the public's interest of attending theater viewings. The strategy of packaging their actors' "personas" and selling it to their audiences started to become popular and yielded positive results (VanDerploeg 24). The star system was one of the key economic strategies that helped production companies find new talent for their movies and helped audiences differentiated movies from competing studios. While it was primary created to effectively promote their movies, the star system was also the "basis for a hierarchical division of labour in the Hollywood film industry". This meant that it allowed Hollywood executives to have power over both their actor's career decisions and their general lives (Holmes 99). Although all actors were affected by this, women were the main victims of exploitation and trauma in the work place. Throughout the "Golden Age of Hollywood", actresses have been highly mistreated by studio executives. Components of the star system left a physical and emotional toll onto female performers, and it was only through their plight that certain workforce were developed. ...
