 Vulnerability is a concept that is directly related to the
social construction viewpoint which is so prevalent in
today’s scholarship
 Vulnerability does not neglect hazards because there
can be no vulnerability without hazards (i.e., you must
be vulnerable to something - an earthquake, industrial
explosion or terrorist attack)
 However, the social construction school explicitly
shifts paradigms from hazards (which we cannot
control) to the role of humans in disasters (i.e., our
degree of vulnerability to a hazard or several hazards,
which we can and do determine on a daily basis)
 Some relevant theories which support social construction
views those are:
 Decision making theory- Minmma
 Technology-Shahinoor
 Sustainability
 Economic Theory-
 Organizational Behavior- Mezbah
 System theory- Bayzid
 Development Theory- Al amin
 Compliance model of evaluation- Nazia
 Weberian perspective of emergency management- Milton
 Risk Perception & communication
 Some relevant theories which support social construction
views those are:
 Sustainability perspective- Zafrin
 Decision Making Theory:
 1.Decision making is very important to reduce the loss
of any society at disastrous events.
 2.Decisions only could be made on clear and proper
information.
 3.By making right decision on the accurate time ,the
risk is minimized, the level of social vulnerability get
lower.
Nuclear,
Chemical &
technological
Disaster
1. Chernobyl reactor exclusion (1986)
2. Three mile Island Reactor(1979)
3. Bhopal disaster(1984)(Methyl isocyanides Gas leaked, 8000
people died)
4. Radiation Leak in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant(2011)
(Tsunami generated earthquake)
5. Earthquake may cause the collapse of oil-producing
infrastructures resulting in the release of oil into the sea or on
land, depending on whether it is offshore or onshore platform.
Excessive
development of
modern
infrastructure
Excessive and unplanned development made Dhaka most
vulnerable city for earthquake and fires. The violation of building
codes and defiance of safety issues during construction of high-rises
have exposed around 18 million people in and around the capital
vulnerable to fires and earthquakes.
Technology
 Economic Theory: Economic solvency is related to
Social construction views as human and its income has
an positive and negative impact in Disaster
management. Economic solvency is key here.
 Weberian perspective theory: As culture , values
and Norms completely depends on people or human
being or Individual perception so it refers to the
vulnerability which relates to Social construction
views.
 System Theory: Social constructionist views also can
connected with system theory because, both of these
theories addressing many influencing variables ( Like ;
natural, technological, political, culture, Gender, race
,education, organizational, and psychological
environments) in a complicated ways but its basically based
on social perspective like our culture, norms, values,
customs, and institutional practice etc.
 Up to Sidr, people in coastal areas in Bangladesh especially
women's were lag behind from men to going cyclone shelter
because of social culture and practice. After sidr women
were come forward and some cases they are more advanced
than men.
 This system theory helps to predict the level of vulnerability and
thus communities people who are the under risk.
Societal
Injustice Theory
Sustainability
perspective Compares
Disasters are
brought
upon some humans
By
Other humans.
Environmental
Degradation may
Create additional
vulnerability in
the future.
Human activities mostly responsible
for environmental
Degradation.
Example:
 Global warming
 Deforestation
 Manufactured products
 Energy industry
 Ocean acidification
 Ozone depletion
 Water degradation
Effects:
 Extreme weather events
 Increase in average temperatures and temperature
extremes,Ice melt, Sea levels and ocean acidification,
Plants animal/Social effects
 Compliance model of evacuation:
 Social constructionist theory shows us the role of
human during disasters. And later, during analyzing
the compliance model of evacuation we have seen that
there is also have a strong role of the responders
during disaster. They play an extraordinary role by
reducing vulnerability, thus mass casualties.
 So, from my perspective compliance model of
evacuation is a part of social constructionist theory
Organizational Behavior:
Role of human during disaster organization view other
variables are : natural, technological, political, cultural
gender, race and psychological environment.
 Organizational behavior may translated into a disaster
where 100 of employee may lost their lives in the line
of duty.
