This primary source, John Rolfe's Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the settlement era and was written in 1614. The
European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from
the Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies. It was a way to gain an economic
relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously
cleared by the Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the 1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a
window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the
importance of this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe's decision to marry Pocahontas proved to be
vital at the time. John Rolfe's letter to Thomas Dale for approval on marrying the Indian Princess Pocahontas reflects on how much society in the early

The global world knows Pocahontas as a fairy tale about a Native American woman who fell in love with an English man, John Smith. Other
individuals know about the true story of Pocahontas and how she was taken from her homeland and paraded around to show the world that "Indians"

several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day
Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a

tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to
economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists. Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe,
played a pivotal role in this early contact between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English colonists
and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator"

Throughout the warmer climate, Smith and Pocahontas spend many days swimming, running about in fields, and doing many outdoors activities

In this paper I hope to explore the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas is quite famous in elementary school classrooms. This is because her story fits
within the larger story of the colonization of America. Also, her love affair with John Smith made a good Disney movie. How much of what I know
about her life comes from Hollywood, and how much of what I know about her life comes from reality? I will examine an academic database source

Disney versus Reality When one says the name Pocahontas, the most likely image that comes to mind is of that one Disney created nearly twenty
years ago. Tall, super model body with long ebony hair worthy of a L'Oreal commercial, in a short cocktail dress with a typical Native American
theme to it. She is eighteen and just met John Smith; a twenty one year old Englishman with golden hair and a body of a Greek god. At least, that is
what Disney's version of Pocahontas had happen, and if he were around at the time, John Smith would wholeheartedly agree. The truth could not be any

needed a chunk of this new world. To accomplish this objective, King James I sent Bartholomew Gosnold to establish the Virginia company and to
colonize new land in North America. When the 3 ships arrived off the coast ofVirginia, a terrible storm made the sailors lost in the Chesapeake bay.
