ONE prompt and text pairing that interests you. Then, take a look at the guiding questions for
the text you choose. You don’t necessarily need to answer all of these questions in your paper.
The questions are there to help get you thinking in a direction that will be more likely to lead
you to a successful literary analysis.
PROMPT 1.
Write an analysis of a key character in a literary work. Focus on two or three key actions of that
character. Discuss the character’s motivations and decisions in terms you can support with clear
evidence from a critical reading of the text. Consider whether this character’s actions fit
together or contradict each other. You may also want to consider whether or not any other
characters in the story are aware of this conflict, and if so, how they influence the character you
are writing about.

ELIT 21 Women and Literature Essay 4: Women and Aging in literature Identify the way society views aging, old women in Tell Me A Riddle, “The Moths,” and/ or “The Ruins” Analyze how women in the works we have read for this class are represented through their aging process. What are the characteristics, concerns, struggles, and advantages of being an old woman? How do the women deal with the stereotypes, patriarchies and intersectionalities as they age? How does the outside world and their own families treat them? Please refer to points from the essay “On Being An Aging Woman,” as well as to points made from other criticism that we have read as it pertains to the representation of old women in literature and how they are dismissed or overlooked in society. When support the points you make with texts, remember to give specific quotes from the texts (the short stories and the novella) and analyze how the quotes support the points made in Holstein’s “On Being an Again Woman.” The essay, as always, needs to be at least 2 and ½ pages long, with a works cited page.
