He chose to make his business a S Corporation because it was recommended by an
accountant for personal protection

4. BACKGROUND OF BUSINESS
• My father started the company through his 20 years of experience running another
company‟s work
• The business was funded by work he had lined up when he started and personal money
and equipment we purchased over the years of doing small side jobs.
• He started the business for two reasons. One was for financial reasons and the other
reason was to be able to make time for his family and our activities.
• All of his training was on job training and through trial and error.
• The business has grown over the years and it survived depressive times.
5. SUCCESSES
• The business bought our family a new house, newer assets like cars and appliances and
supplied money for college tuitions.
• The most rewarding aspect of running your own business is being able to dictate when
and how the company runs. He said he likes this because he could work around family
matters and being able to spend time with family and friends.
• The critical success factors for this type of business are having to working hard all the
time, attending all seminars, dealing with new products and types of construction, having
to deal with dispositions and attitudes of a different type of personal that you find in the
field of work.
6. CHALLENGES
• Finding work and keeping work on a steady basis, especially during the winter months are
difficult challenges for this type of business.
• The most challenging aspect of running the business is finding work because the masonry
trade is slow. Today the business is being replaced with cheaper products and cheaper
illegal labor.
• To overcome this challenge, he keeps doing good work with better products at a realistic
price.
• The fatal flaws in this type of business is the offseason labor.
7. COMPETITION
• He doesn't‟t have any two specific companies that are his competitors but he believes that
landscape companies and drive-it companies are the main competitors.
• The business tries to keep a competitive advantage by offering a better product at a
competitive price.
• He keeps his customers satisfied and builds a customer loyalty by giving them a great
product, being on time start to finis and being available whenever they need work.
8. MARKETING/STAFFING
• To market his business, he uses Angies list, business cards, truck advertisements and by
people talking about his business and giving good reviews to other people.
• When considering ne employees he looks for hardworking, loyal, eager to learn
competent and respectful people.
9. THE FUTURE
• My father plans on staying in the business for as long as he can. Some future goals for
his business is to get better employee benefits, investments to compliment benefits
including his retirement.

• Who was your favorite boss before going on your own?
“My favorite boss was Peter Benedict. He was my favorite boss because he always helped me
and my family when we needed help either through financial or personal matters.”
• What parts of the U.S have you done work in?
„I worked in Massachusetts, Rhoed Island, Maine and California.”
• What makes you want to get up everyday and want to go to work?
“My main reason why I get up and go to work everyday is to be able to suport my family and
show my kids that you have to have a good work ethic to be able to e successful in this
world.‟‟
11. SUMMARY
• “ My advice for all of you is to educate yourselves and stay in school. You also need to
work hard, show respect for your job, employer and community. Another thing is you have
to be creative and do not be afraid to try something new. This is how the world keeps
advancing because of your generation becoming so much smarter than my generation at
your age.‟
• I learned a lot from doing this interview. But to basically sum up what I learned is to
always work hard and never give up. No matter what type of job we want in the future, this
interview shoed me how to act and be for certain situations.
