1. Detailed Analysis of Insidious Trailer
Camerawork;
 Establishing shot of the family home, this shows the family to be a
normal family but it also shows where the film will be set and it shows
the house to be a conventional horror film setting.
 Two shot used when the little boy is in a coma, it is used to show the
parents expressions and also shows the family’s life is about to change.
 Point of view shot of the main female character showing her going to
something which creates the scary aspect as she is very slow and scared
of what she is going to look at.
 Zoom focus on key things such as baby monitor and the rooms to show
she is scared and that something is happening.
 Handheld camera gives the film trailer an amateur affect which works
well as it shows what the character is looking at very effectively.
 Close up of character with the monster behind which is very sudden
makes the audience scared as it is a very jumpy moment in the trailer.
Sound;
 Creepy clock ticking while it shows the family’s happy life, this creates
tension makes the audience to expect something to happen. The noise is
started by a clicking clock by is stopped by the women stopping a rocking
horse.
 Diegetic sound is used for thing such as screaming, creepy noises, baby
crying are uses of affective diegetic sounds as they create tension and
create a scary element of the trailer.
 Non-diegetic sounds such as the music added is used to build the
tension and set the scene. It is a piece of music which is conventional for
a horror film as it is very fast and creepy.
 Dialogue changes throughout the trailer. It starts just normal speaking
but there isn’t much of it but as the trailer advances, the dialogue
becomes more hurried and shows the family being in trouble as there is
a lot of shouting but there is also very soft and gentle dialogue which is
just as effective as shouting.

happen in this trailer and makes the audience want to see what happens
next in the film as they don’t show the whole clip. This will make the
audience want to watch the film in full to see what happens. There is

audience.
 Fast paced editing is conventional for a horror trailer as the high speed
of the trailer allows there to be more in the trailer. It also makes it
scarier as the trailer is jumpy and it builds tension.
Mise-en-scene
 Props: Rocking horse, ticking clock: both props that are associated with
horror films as they create noises that can be used to scare people. The
creaking and ticking, if used affectively, can be the simplest way of
scaring people as they audience are waiting for it to stop and they know
as soon as it stops, something will happen.
 Location: Big family house: Rooms in the family house is where the film
is set, this is conventional for a horror film that it happens in there
housing as it is normally the house or a family member that is haunted.
The little boy is the one who is haunted and it uses his room the most
and also his younger brother’s room. This is a conventional location for a
horror film.
 Clothing is very plain and there is a lot of blood stained clothing in the
trailer. This creates a scarier trailer as you want to know what happened
to them and makes the audience want to see what happened.
 Low key lighting is used throughout most of the trailer as dark colours
are conventional for a horror film. The low key lightening creates a scary
aspect and a creepy, gloomy setting which makes it harder for the
characters to see what is happening. In turn, this makes it scarier for the
audience to watch.

noises which can used to make the scary affect. The setting is
conventional as it is set in the family’s home. This is conventional as it is

This adds to the tension and makes the film gloomier and makes it more
of a sad and scary feeling which would match the characters in the film.
