Compare And Contrast Bradford And John Smith
Smith's and Bradford's Journey Captain John Smith and Governor William Bradford were both
influential men during the seventeenth century. They were both American writers that came to
America to write about the New World. Their writings of the two writers describe the advantages
and disadvantages of coming to the New World. Although these two men have similarities, they also
have differences between them. Despite the fact Smith and Bradford both came to the New World,
they were considered to be remarkably different from each other. One of the main differences
between Smith and Bradford was their style of writing. Smith chose to write to persuade people to
come to the New World and start a new life. Smith said, "What pleasure can be more than in
planting vines, fruits, or herbs, in contriving their own grounds to the pleasure of their own minds,
their fields, gardens, orchards, buildings, ships, and other works..." His goal was to try to make the
New World sound pleasant to live there as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smith would commonly call them "savages", and paint grisly and uncivilized images of their
traditional feasts. Smith said, "But almighty God (by his divine providence) has mollified the hearts
of those stern barbarians with compassion." Smith refers to the Indians as barbarians because he
believes they are no help to him even though they are the reason as to why the colony survived.
Bradford also comes in contact with Indians, but talks about them as friendly and english–speaking.
Because of their kindness, Bradford respectively calls them "Indians" and even views some as allies.
Bradford said, "The lordly and tyrnoues power of the prelates ought not to be submitted unto"He
said this because during the thanksgiving feast the Native Americans offer Bradford food. After they
offer food to everyone, there is a change of opinion because now Bradford shows more respect

Early Jamestown John Smith Summary
John Smith was one of the original settlers of Jamestown. But before that he was an experienced
solider and diplomat. He fought the Spanish in the Netherlands and the Turks in Hungary. When he
arrived to Jamestown he took part in governing the colony and managing relations with the natives.
After being saved by a friendly Indian named Pocahontas and helping colonization in the New
World, Smith returned to England. There he wrote and told about his experience in Virginia. He
talked about the Native Americans as well as why he felt it was the best place to continue to build
the England Empire.
The first thing Smith describe in his writing was the view and landscape of the land. He wrote that
the "mildness of the air, the fertility of the soul , and the situation of the rivers are so propitious to
the nature and use of man as no place is more convenient for pleasure, profit and man sustenance."
Any living creature could live there because the latitude and climate were perfect. There were safe
harbors for boats of all kind located around all shores. And there were all kinds of natural resources
that were available. The country had everything and would be a good place to settle down in. ...

"Within 60 miles of Jamestown there are about some 500 people." These people were the Native
Americans, most of them women and children. Smith describe the natives as "generally tall and
straight, of a comely proportion, and of a color brown. Their hair is generally black, but few have
any beards." The natives were strong, full of agility and could endure all types of weather. Smith
saw them as savages that was "covered with the skins of wild

John Smith Abandonment Of Virginia
In this document, John Smith describes the abandonment of their colony in Virginia during a long
period of not having food. Smith took his men and sailed back to England, where he described, in
third person, what is was like before they left. "The day before Captain Smith returned for England
with the ships, Captain Davis arrived in a small Pinace with some sixteene proper men more"
(Smith, 27). Captain Smith had previously thought that they would rely on the Patawomeke tribe to
trade with them so they wouldn't have to plant any food, however, Smith was wrong and found out
the hard way that the Patawomeke would just ignore them instead. Smith's men would suffer during
the Winter months, and go on to say, "we had nothing but mortall wounds,

Captain John Smith: First Permanent Settlement In America
Captain John Smith 91580–1631), an adventurer and founder of the first permanent settlement in
America at Jamestown, Virginia, wrote the first book in American Literature. Smith was baptized on
6 January 1580 at Willoughby near Alford, Lincolnshire, where his parents rented a farm from Lord
Willoughby. He claimed descent from the ancient Smith family of Cuerdley Lancashire and was
educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth, from 1592–1595. After his father died, Smith
left home at the age of sixteen and set off to sea. He served as a mercenary in the army of Henry IV
of France against the Spaniards, fighting for Dutch independence from the Spanish King Phillip II.
He then set off for the Mediterranean Sea. There he engaged in both trade

Compare And Contrast John Smith And William Bradford
John Smith and Governor William Bradford were two influential men in the New World during the
early 1600's. Both wrote of their experiences in America and desired to settle the land. Both came
from different backgrounds and had different experiences that affected their point of view on the
natives. While Smith roamed Virginia as a scout and military man, Bradford planted his church
community at Plymouth. They both describe their events in different points of views and different
styles of writing. They both started off with the same plan but had completely different experiences
and because of that they depicted their interactions with the natives very differently.
John Smith and William Bradford would both agree that the New World should be inhabited and
settled, and that good, hard–working men should develop the land. In contrast though, they both
envision a slightly different America. John Smith wants an industrialized America and to conquer
the natives. On the other hand, William wants the New World to be a another version of England and
for only his people to populate it. They both had a purpose of settling the New World and making a
good place for their people but because of their backgrounds they experienced different things. ...

John Smith Essay
John Smith is one of the most famous people in American literature history. He was a dedicated man
to his country of England, and wanted nothing more than to claim America in the name of the king.
During his adventures to the new land he encountered many new things and people including a
young Native American woman named Pocahontas. He also wrote many journals enticing people to
want to come to America. This shall tell you the story of John Smith from his journeys as a young
man all the way to when he finally came to America, and how his writings still influence people to
immigrate to America still today.
John Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England to a farmer and his wife in 1580. He only had a

With this policy, the survival rate grew to nearly ninety percent that year. He organized successful
trading with the Native American Powhattan. Smith was however captured by him and only spared
when Powhattan's daughter Pocahontas pleaded for his life. This is where the story of Pocahontas
comes from. Smith wrote a letter about this encounter to Queen Anne when he heard of her coming
to England years later. He wanted to ensure that she would not be treated as someone that could not
be trusted. He wanted to show her loyalty to him and to England.
Smith was badly burned in 1606 from a gunpowder explosion and forced to return back to England.
In 1614 he returned with an expedition to map the New England coastline. He would never return to
Virginia again after this. He would from then on only promote colonizing the New England area.
His efforts to promote colonizing were blocked by weather, pirates and lack of funding. He then
resorted to writing about colonization. In his writing he elaborated about how wonderful it was in
the new world. He would say that the fish practically jump into your boat when you go fishing and
things such as that. He made the new world seem better than it really was so people would want to
travel here and settle in it. His plan worked because year after year more and more people flocked to
the New England hoping to colonize and not have to worry about running out

Essay Compare And Contrast Jamestown And John Smith
Two men came to America with a organization of people on a ship to set up their own colony. Both
of them had a goal and a reason for coming to the new world. When both of them came to set up a
colony they had high hopes. They soon realized it would be a struggle to survive and had to endure a
lot when they decided to come to the new world. They were not exactly the same though and had
some differences and came to the new world for contrasting reasons. Jamestown was settled by the
Virginia Company and Captain John Smith, who was the leader and was one of the reasons why
Jamestown was able to endure and withstand in such difficult circumstances. In Smith's narrative
"but nothing so difficult as to establish a commonwealth so far remote from men and means, and
where men's minds are so untoward as neither do well themselves, nor suffer others"(Smith).People
were being greedy and didn't want to help each other which was a big problem in Jamestown and
made it difficult to be able to survive.Another concept in his account of what happens on his journey

Smith is exploring the land when he learns Jamestown has intruded on the Powhatan indian tribes
land. Powhatan and his men capture John. John later writes that the chief's daughter Pocahontas
supposedly saves Smith from death. The unstable relationship between the chief and Smith is one of
the many reasons that benefit and set back the colony from progression. Smith is one of the main
reasons the VIrginia colony survived due to his hard leadership. John encouraged agriculture, and he
a strong self explanatory policy for the lazy englishmen called the "no work, no eat policy". A quote
by John even says"For here in Virginia, a plain soldier that can use a pick–axe and spade, is better

from England who just wanted to try and lead did not realize how much work they would have to
put in.During low times such as a drought food would be scarce and they could not grow much. This
would lead Smith into launching attacks to steal from the indians and raid everything that would
help save the colony. John Smith is said to have to return to europe due to an incident involving an

Pocahontas and John Smith may be the most famous and best known part of history of the original
Jamestown settlement of 1607. As a popular Disney film star, stories of Pocahontas' life began
creating our own pop culture idea of what really happened during the first attempt at colonizing the

This is a very important time in the history of our country, and we have little documentation
supporting the theories of events that historians have come up with. We rely on the love story of

ask the question; do we really know what happened between Pocahontas and John Smith?

Camilla Townsend also adds in her historical writing that if we focus on the rescue story of John

more than just the daughter of a tribe leader he met, her marriage to John Rolfe proved diplomacy
and powerful interactions among the natives and English people.

Historian Helen Rountree adds to this notion by writing that the story of a young women who had

John Smith And Pocahontas Analysis
Within two passages, "The (Untrue) Story of John Smith and Pocahontas" and "The General History
of Virginia" the capturing of John Smith is portrayed. The story of the capturing and rescuing of
John Smith is briefly documented in this form: John Smith was captured by a person claimed as
Powhatan, who was understood to be the tributary leader of several tribes on the tidal rivers and
creeks. One day, Warriors associated with Powhatan captured Captain John Smith in the late 1607
and threatened to kill him. However, within a month of his capture, Smith was free, in Jamestown,
and reporting that he had concluded an arrangement in which Powhatan would provide the colonists
with food. The stories do show this historical event rather variously. ... Show more content on

With a mere glance at the passage, one can see that Pocahontas is mentioned about twice during the
whole duration. In paragraph two, through Smith's perspective, it says: "After they had presented
him with a feast in their best barbarous manner, they held a long discussion. At the end of that
discussion, two great stones were brought before Powhatan. Then, as many of them as could do so
grabbed Captain Smith. They dragged him to them and laid his head on the stones, ready with their
clubs to beat out his brains. But Pocahontas, the King's dearest daughter, begged them to stop. When
her entreaties failed, she put his head in her arms and laid her own upon his to save him from death.
Upon seeing this, the Emperor was contented that Captain Smith should live". From this, we can see
that Pocahontas did not "rescue" Smith's life as said in "The (Untrue) Story of John Smith and
Pocahontas". Using the story from both passages "The (Untrue) Story of John Smith and
Pocahontas" and "The General History of Virginia" it is possible to compare and contrast the

America, there was a great deal of political and religious turmoil occurring in England. People
wanted to escape to a place where they wouldn't be outlawed for their independent congregations
and personal philosophies that they believed in. Eminent men, like John Smith and John Winthrop,
saw America as a great opportunity to start over where they could establish new communities
separated and undisturbed by England. They each wrote a proposal to the people of England to

Captain Smyth at Pamaunke, having but 15 to withstand the worst of their fury.' By mentioning this,
Smith is assuring his readers that they are much stronger than the Native Americans, as it only took
15 settlers to fight off the upward hundreds of them. He tries to make it clear that these people are
inferior as well as incapable of the same standards of civilization as white men. Smith adds more to
his claim when describes them as, 'inconstant in everything, but what fear constraints them to keep.
Crafty, timorous, quick of apprehension and very ingenious. Some are of disposition fearful, some
bold, most cautious, all savage.' He goes on to talk, in great depth, about their apparel and how the
'better sort' cover themselves in animal skin, while the rest of the majority cover themselves with
grass and leaves. Most of them would additionally adorn themselves with other things, such as
beads, copper, feathers, rat tails, snakes, paintings, etc. To the Indians, these were among things that
they coveted. But to Smith, he just saw them as trash. Used to the way the colonists dressed, Smith
thought the Indians looked barbaric in comparison. John Winthrop had a very

Bradford was a puritan who was brave and firm on setting up a colony where people could practice
religion freely. Both of these men shared similarities and differences with their views of
relationships with fellow settlers, interactions with native americans and divine providence. The way
John Smith and William Bradford interacted with colonist were completely different. Major conflict

wanted to control the native people and their land, setting himself up for success in the new world.
Bradford was more inclined to work with the natives and respect the nature of their ways. His
intentions were not self–motivated, but rather served as an outwardly expression of his faith. When

Why Did Pocahontas Saved John Smith?
From the text and documents provided, my conclusion to whether or not Pocahontas saved John
Smith is that it never happened. We know from the first account about his journey to Jamestown that
he indeed was there, so he was a primary source. Pieces of information I have used to make my
conclusion are the two accounts of John Smith, historian Lemay's document about his opinion, and
expert Lewis' interpretations about the event. After reading both of John Smith's accounts, I think
that Pocahontas never saved John Smith. Both his pieces of writing give many clues to why this is
true. From background information, it is known that the Virginia Company censored what writing

He claims that "In [John Smith's second version] the General History, his goal was to promote
settlement in Virginia and added stories to get people interested"(Lemay, The American Dream of
Captain John Smith). The main interaction with the Powhatan tribe that is described in the second
account is about how he was captured and about to die. This doesn't seem like positive or stories that
would make people excited to come to Virginia if they knew about the neighboring tribe which
surrounds the colony being hostile. Even if young men felt like they were excited for an action thrill,
their families would probably disapprove. Lemay also claims that Pocahontas pretended to save a
newcomer to welcome him into the tribe, a common ritual (Lemay, The American Dream of Captain
John Smith). If this ritual was so common, why isn't there any other accounts of the Powhatan tribe
welcoming new settlers? No descendants of the Powhatan tribe have any knowledge of this ritual
either. Overall, this source seems untrustworthy because the author of this book makes random
claims and interpretations about the Powhatan tribe's traditions and rituals, and has unlikely

Similarities Between William Bradford And Captain John Smith
The Founding Writers Captain John Smith and Governor William Bradford were two very important

Captain John Smith was a very important person in Jamestown. Cooper wrote, "Captain John Smith

special mission, and that God would see them through all of the hard times. This is one of the
reasons that William Bradford was such a powerful leader. The Pilgrims put God above all, and
because William Bradford made it known that he did too, they followed him and trusted him.
Without William Bradford's leadership the Pilgrims would have been lost. The winter would have

John Smith Identity
"John Smith was as bland and inconsequential as his name." (Fusi, 45) This quote shows 2 things,
how boring John is and Fusi's interpretation of him. This quote uses John's name as an example of
his personality. That suggests that W.D. Valgardson chose John's name to show his personality. To
paint a picture of John Smith you need to know his physical features, his interaction with other
characters and finally his personality. John Smith had a very bland appearance. He had a round face
with blue eyes and kept very tidy facial hair. We know this from the quote " Moon–faced with wide
blue eyes and a small mouth above which sat a carefully rimmed mustache." (Fusi,45) He was a
skinny and short man which was a physical way of showing his sheepish personality. We know this
from the line " He was a head shorter than Emma and a good 50 pounds lighter." (Fusi,45) John
Smith's bland appearance is further shown when we learn that he always wears grey suits and ties.
That is shown in the line " He always wore light grey ties and a light grey suit." (Fusi,52) All of
these things further show John Smith's monotonous physical features. ... Show more content on

for the crown as well as to map out the area. At first they despised the Natives and tortured them

The Legacy Of John Smith
When the name John Smith is mentioned, people of all ages are familiar with it and could tell a lot
about him. Why is this? How is it that a man who lived over 400 years ago still so popular today,
more specifically to our children? The answer to that question is because John Smith can be viewed
as one of America's earliest heroes. His leadership was vital to the survival of the Jamestown colony.
Most people are familiar with his famous quote, "he that will not work shall not eat." He carried all
the qualities of an influential leader, and even had a mystical legend with Pocahontas, in which no
one truly knows what happened. His leadership characteristics and qualities possessed hard work,
grit, and determination. He was an individualist that had an "American" dream. However, during his
time, the colonists did not look at it as an "American" dream. Without him and his leadership,
America may not be what it is today. In John Smith's writings in From the General History of
Virginia, one can make the interesting observation that Smith constantly refers to himself as "he"
instead of "I". He directly shows the reader his personal sense of pride and self confidence in
himself. An example of this from the text would be when he said, "But seeing by trade and courtesy
there was nothing to be had, he made bold to try such conclusions as necessity enforced; though
contrary to his commission, he let fly his muskets, ran his boat on shore, whereat they all fled into
the woods. (61)"

Love and compassion merely describes the surface of the story of Pocahontas. An individual might
only be able to see Disney's version, but upon further analysis, an individual can find that the story
is much more political and not as happy as it seems. In John Smith's account of Pocahontas,
Pocahontas is a woman who falls in love with him even against her father's warnings. He was
captured and supposed to be killed. This did not happen, as Pocahontas jumped in front of Smith to
save him. This is from the account of John Smith, and for generations, most of us have watched the
movie Pocahontas and fell for its plot. Deeper into the plot, it seems that Smith saves Jamestown

John Smith was a self–promoter, and would lie in order to maintain his image. In fact, the story of
John Smith's romance with Pocahontas was fabricated simply because Smith wanted to maintain a
positive public identity. Smith was known to be an abrasive, ambitious, self–promoting mercenary
soldier by his fellow colonists. Pocahontas's name meant "the naughty one," and her real name was
Matoaka. She was simply named that because it fit in with Smith's account of Pocahontas.

Compare And Contrast John Smith And William Bradford
Captain John Smith and William Bradford were men who played a great significance during the
colonial period. Both traveled from Europe to America in the early 1600's. When finally arrived in
America, the two had created their own colonies (Jamestown & Plymouth Plantation). They both
wrote about their experience in America. Not only they became well known what they had done in
America but also became great writers. Even though they had some similarly during their journey in
America, they also faced a lot of hardships during the process. They both wrote about the difficulties
they faced during the travel to America and what they had to encounter once they settled into the
new world.

When they arrived in 1607, the colony had a food shortage as well: the land wasn't the best area to
plant anything. That wasn't the case. Instead of farming for food, the setters were looking for

was completely unsanitary, which caused a lot of setters to get ill. On a result, the setters died by
diseases like malaria and typhoid.
Unlike William Bradford, John Smith had a difficult relationship with the native Americans. When
Captain Smith first arrived in Virginia, the Powhatans were unsure if they should allow the setters to
stay there. They were invading their land, but the tribe welcomed Captain James and setters with
open arms. The Powhatans helped the setters, by giving them food and supplies to help them survive

Compare And Contrast Christopher Columbus And John Smith
Christopher Columbus and John Smith are both similar in the fact that they made their kin very
proud and became famous of their accounts of unexplored territory. Though their ideas of what to do
with what they encountered was different, they both were very brave men. They were different in a
way though. Columbus believed that there was a great value in terms of wealth to the natural
resources he saw on the islands and he used a different rhetoric to explain it. John Smith saw
economic growth possibilities in the fertile New England area that had a vast amount of natural
resources, he also valued different commodities than Columbus.
Christopher Columbus's description of the natural resources that he finds was actually quite similar
to John Smith's. Columbus's idea was different from Smith's though, he thought that these natural
resources were much more valuable in terms of wealth. When Columbus saw the beautiful stretches
of land that America had to offer he was excited of the riches that it will bring him and his mother
country Spain. Columbus believed that there was gold to be found in America and that America
stretched bigger than England. John Smith encountered natural resources like crops and fish in New
England, "For hunting also: the woods, lakes and rivers afford not only chase sufficient, for any that
delights in that kind of toil, or pleasure;...pay."(Smith 125). The animals that John Smith run into are

eventually rose to the rank of captain. Sadly, his good fortune was fleeting, for he was soon captured
by a Turk and sent to work for a maiden– who he soon fell in love with. Reportedly, she fancied him
too, and sent him to her brother so that John could train for the Turkish imperial service. Luck
eluded him once again, as her brother proved to be heinous. In response to this, John killed him,
fled, and then later returned to England. Oh, and he was only twenty–five

John Smith believed that success in such adventures requires individual initiative and commitment.

After a while he started exploring the new world which included Virginia, New England and
Summer Isles. Smith had a very prestigious and independent outlook on life and throughout his

Traveling to Jamestown, stepping into the unknown, was full of secrets, anticipation, and risk. With
this temporary place called home, brought along a bundle of problems. The Natives, who originally
possessed the land, were very hostile towards the new comers in the beginning, but after a while
Smith organized the settlers to where they could defend their selves from them once he leaves to

Despite the chaotic environment Smith took control of Jamestown's defense. Under his command,
the fort was strengthened and armed guards were put into place to watch over the settlement.
Throughout Smiths efforts, it took a long time before the new colony could stand up on its own. He
had to repeatedly trade with the Natives for resources but in the end, without his strong leadership,
Jamestown would've been lost. Today's new age practices is very similar to Smiths'. For example the

went on to be used by future explorers. Smith helped his colony immensely, the colonists were
starving to death and had very little food at all. Smith was successful in negotiations with the Native
Americans and prevented starvation for his colony. Although he was only in America for two years,
Smith was responsible for the colony's survival. His leadership is what made it a successful, well–

experiences with the New World, just like the short story, Of Plymouth Plantation, by William
Bradford does. While these short stories both fall under the same category, coming to the new world,
they are not exactly the same nor are they much different from each other. John Smith came to the
New World and landed in Jamestown for one particular reason, for tobacco. "Had we been as free

The Pilgrims were puritans who came to the New World for religious freedom because they were
being persecuted. Coming to the New World was tough to manage, but their faith in God helped
them get through it all step by step. For example, Bradford writes, "... they fell upon their knees and
blessed the God of heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean..."(Bradford 78).
This just shows how much faith the pilgrims had in their religion. They believed that if they kept
their faith, that possible everything would be okay. Another difference that they had was that John
Smith's story was in first person, and the Pilgrims story was in third person. John Smith used a
handful of adjectives to describe himself as strong and brave. As for the Pilgrims, Bradford did not
give any implications that he himself was a Pilgrim, which is why his story was in third person. Not
only that, but he did not use pronouns like, I, We, or Us. This is a minor difference, but it is
significant because it shows different point of

In the wealth of nations Smith makes numerous bold claims, these suggestions need to be
scrutinised and weighed up, the following paragraphs will now put his hypothesis under the torch
light. Smith does have some legitimate points however, there also many that have holes in his claims
too, in reality; his idealistic theory of free market is not as advantageous he contends, in fact, the
free market has many disadvantages to it. Smith was quite clearly, a fierce critic of mercantilism and
some of his criticisms do appear to be valid. Smith argument can be demonstrated via Tariffs as they

Corn was not another commodity like most in the times, as it was necessary for guaranteeing the
subsistence of the population. The demand and need for corn was massive, it was unlikely for the
demand of corn to really diminish. It should and would be seen as morally questionable, to make
corn a full commodity. In the modern society, corn may be not as much of a commodity as it was
back then but there still plenty of goods and services that can be considered committed such as free
healthcare, educations water, energy and so forth. Isaiah berlin's idea of positive liberty is the basis
of this concept that essentially, the state needs to create a society where it is for an individual to rise
and progress however certain industries are needed to ensure. Put in the simplest terms, one might
say that a democratic society is a free society because it is a self–determined society, and that a
member of that society is free to the extent that he or she participates in its democratic process. But
there are also individualist applications of the concept of positive freedom. For example, it is
sometimes said that a government should aim actively to create the conditions necessary for
individuals to be self–sufficient or to achieve self–realization . A without public education and
healthcare, many would not not be able to afford these necessities which would increase poverty and
mortality as there are basics for

William Bradford and John Smith were both influential men colonizing the New World during the

In John Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia, he emphasizes brave characteristics that he would like

  • 1. Compare And Contrast Bradford And John Smith Smith's and Bradford's Journey Captain John Smith and Governor William Bradford were both influential men during the seventeenth century. They were both American writers that came to America to write about the New World. Their writings of the two writers describe the advantages and disadvantages of coming to the New World. Although these two men have similarities, they also have differences between them. Despite the fact Smith and Bradford both came to the New World, they were considered to be remarkably different from each other. One of the main differences between Smith and Bradford was their style of writing. Smith chose to write to persuade people to come to the New World and start a new life. Smith said, "What pleasure can be more than in planting vines, fruits, or herbs, in contriving their own grounds to the pleasure of their own minds, their fields, gardens, orchards, buildings, ships, and other works..." His goal was to try to make the New World sound pleasant to live there as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smith would commonly call them "savages", and paint grisly and uncivilized images of their traditional feasts. Smith said, "But almighty God (by his divine providence) has mollified the hearts of those stern barbarians with compassion." Smith refers to the Indians as barbarians because he believes they are no help to him even though they are the reason as to why the colony survived. Bradford also comes in contact with Indians, but talks about them as friendly and english–speaking. Because of their kindness, Bradford respectively calls them "Indians" and even views some as allies. Bradford said, "The lordly and tyrnoues power of the prelates ought not to be submitted unto"He said this because during the thanksgiving feast the Native Americans offer Bradford food. After they offer food to everyone, there is a change of opinion because now Bradford shows more respect towards ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After being saved by a friendly Indian named Pocahontas and helping colonization in the New World, Smith returned to England. There he wrote and told about his experience in Virginia. He talked about the Native Americans as well as why he felt it was the best place to continue to build the England Empire. The first thing Smith describe in his writing was the view and landscape of the land. He wrote that the "mildness of the air, the fertility of the soul , and the situation of the rivers are so propitious to the nature and use of man as no place is more convenient for pleasure, profit and man sustenance." Any living creature could live there because the latitude and climate were perfect. There were safe harbors for boats of all kind located around all shores. • 3. John Smith Abandonment Of Virginia In this document, John Smith describes the abandonment of their colony in Virginia during a long period of not having food. Smith took his men and sailed back to England, where he described, in third person, what is was like before they left. "The day before Captain Smith returned for England with the ships, Captain Davis arrived in a small Pinace with some sixteene proper men more" (Smith, 27). Captain Smith had previously thought that they would rely on the Patawomeke tribe to trade with them so they wouldn't have to plant any food, however, Smith was wrong and found out the hard way that the Patawomeke would just ignore them instead. Both wrote of their experiences in America and desired to settle the land. Both came from different backgrounds and had different experiences that affected their point of view on the natives. While Smith roamed Virginia as a scout and military man, Bradford planted his church community at Plymouth. They both describe their events in different points of views and different styles of writing. They both started off with the same plan but had completely different experiences and because of that they depicted their interactions with the natives very differently. John Smith and William Bradford would both agree that the New World should be inhabited and settled, and that good, hard–working men should develop the land. In contrast though, they both envision a slightly different America. John Smith wants an industrialized America and to conquer the natives. On the other hand, William wants the New World to be a another version of England and for only his people to populate it. With this policy, the survival rate grew to nearly ninety percent that year. He organized successful trading with the Native American Powhattan. Smith was however captured by him and only spared when Powhattan's daughter Pocahontas pleaded for his life. This is where the story of Pocahontas comes from. Smith wrote a letter about this encounter to Queen Anne when he heard of her coming to England years later. He wanted to ensure that she would not be treated as someone that could not be trusted. He wanted to show her loyalty to him and to England. Smith was badly burned in 1606 from a gunpowder explosion and forced to return back to England. In 1614 he returned with an expedition to map the New England coastline. He would never return to Virginia again after this. He would from then on only promote colonizing the New England area. His efforts to promote colonizing were blocked by weather, pirates and lack of funding. He then resorted to writing about colonization. In his writing he elaborated about how wonderful it was in the new world. He would say that the fish practically jump into your boat when you go fishing and things such as that. He made the new world seem better than it really was so people would want to travel here and settle in it. His plan worked because year after year more and more people flocked to the New England hoping to colonize and not have to worry about running out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They were not exactly the same though and had some differences and came to the new world for contrasting reasons. Jamestown was settled by the Virginia Company and Captain John Smith, who was the leader and was one of the reasons why Jamestown was able to endure and withstand in such difficult circumstances. In Smith's narrative "but nothing so difficult as to establish a commonwealth so far remote from men and means, and where men's minds are so untoward as neither do well themselves, nor suffer others"(Smith).People were being greedy and didn't want to help each other which was a big problem in Jamestown and made it difficult to be able to survive.Another concept in his account of what happens on his journey he talks in the third person and brags about himself being so great. • 10. John Smith And Pocahontas Analysis Within two passages, "The (Untrue) Story of John Smith and Pocahontas" and "The General History of Virginia" the capturing of John Smith is portrayed. The story of the capturing and rescuing of John Smith is briefly documented in this form: John Smith was captured by a person claimed as Powhatan, who was understood to be the tributary leader of several tribes on the tidal rivers and creeks. One day, Warriors associated with Powhatan captured Captain John Smith in the late 1607 and threatened to kill him. However, within a month of his capture, Smith was free, in Jamestown, and reporting that he had concluded an arrangement in which Powhatan would provide the colonists with food. The stories do show this historical event rather variously. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a mere glance at the passage, one can see that Pocahontas is mentioned about twice during the whole duration. In paragraph two, through Smith's perspective, it says: "After they had presented him with a feast in their best barbarous manner, they held a long discussion. At the end of that discussion, two great stones were brought before Powhatan. Then, as many of them as could do so grabbed Captain Smith. They dragged him to them and laid his head on the stones, ready with their clubs to beat out his brains. But Pocahontas, the King's dearest daughter, begged them to stop. When her entreaties failed, she put his head in her arms and laid her own upon his to save him from death. Upon seeing this, the Emperor was contented that Captain Smith should live". From this, we can see that Pocahontas did not "rescue" Smith's life as said in "The (Untrue) Story of John Smith and Pocahontas". By mentioning this, Smith is assuring his readers that they are much stronger than the Native Americans, as it only took 15 settlers to fight off the upward hundreds of them. He tries to make it clear that these people are inferior as well as incapable of the same standards of civilization as white men. Smith adds more to his claim when describes them as, 'inconstant in everything, but what fear constraints them to keep. Crafty, timorous, quick of apprehension and very ingenious. Some are of disposition fearful, some bold, most cautious, all savage.' He goes on to talk, in great depth, about their apparel and how the 'better sort' cover themselves in animal skin, while the rest of the majority cover themselves with grass and leaves. Most of them would additionally adorn themselves with other things, such as beads, copper, feathers, rat tails, snakes, paintings, etc. To the Indians, these were among things that they coveted. After analyzing the two manuscripts by Captain John Smith and William Bradford, I found their two accounts of coming to the new world were just as much similar as they were different. Both men wrote about their experiences, however their approach greatly differed in dealing with the natives, settling the land, and convincing their fellow Europeans to make the voyage to the new world. Smith wanted to control the native people and their land, setting himself up for success in the new world. Bradford was more inclined to work with the natives and respect the nature of their ways. His intentions were not self–motivated, but rather served as an outwardly expression of his faith. When dealing with the natives, John Smith often referred ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Why Did Pocahontas Saved John Smith? From the text and documents provided, my conclusion to whether or not Pocahontas saved John Smith is that it never happened. We know from the first account about his journey to Jamestown that he indeed was there, so he was a primary source. Pieces of information I have used to make my conclusion are the two accounts of John Smith, historian Lemay's document about his opinion, and expert Lewis' interpretations about the event. After reading both of John Smith's accounts, I think that Pocahontas never saved John Smith. Both his pieces of writing give many clues to why this is true. He claims that "In [John Smith's second version] the General History, his goal was to promote settlement in Virginia and added stories to get people interested"(Lemay, The American Dream of Captain John Smith). The main interaction with the Powhatan tribe that is described in the second account is about how he was captured and about to die. This doesn't seem like positive or stories that would make people excited to come to Virginia if they knew about the neighboring tribe which surrounds the colony being hostile. Even if young men felt like they were excited for an action thrill, their families would probably disapprove. Lemay also claims that Pocahontas pretended to save a newcomer to welcome him into the tribe, a common ritual (Lemay, The American Dream of Captain John Smith). If this ritual was so common, why isn't there any other accounts of the Powhatan tribe welcoming new settlers? No descendants of the Powhatan tribe have any knowledge of this ritual either. Overall, this source seems untrustworthy because the author of this book makes random claims and interpretations about the Powhatan tribe's traditions and rituals, and has unlikely references towards who Smith's readers were and what his writing hoped to ... Bradford believed that he and his people were chosen by God to complete the mission of reformation. Daly writes, "He begins his narrative, not with the Pilgrims themselves, but with the previous history of reformation. Only after he has established salvation history as the context for the Plymouth migration does he describe the people God has chosen to live the last chapter of His reformation of the earthly church. Confident of God's assistance, they rested on His providence an found earthly rewards for their keeping of covenant, for though they were sometimes foiled, yet by God's assistance they prevailed and got the victory" (Daly 560). Daly is describing how William Bradford put his faith in God for their survival. He believed God sent them on a special mission, and that God would see them through all of the hard times. This is one of the reasons that William Bradford was such a powerful leader. How is it that a man who lived over 400 years ago still so popular today, more specifically to our children? The answer to that question is because John Smith can be viewed as one of America's earliest heroes. His leadership was vital to the survival of the Jamestown colony. Most people are familiar with his famous quote, "he that will not work shall not eat." He carried all the qualities of an influential leader, and even had a mystical legend with Pocahontas, in which no one truly knows what happened. His leadership characteristics and qualities possessed hard work, grit, and determination. He was an individualist that had an "American" dream. However, during his time, the colonists did not look at it as an "American" dream. Without him and his leadership, America may not be what it is today. In John Smith's writings in From the General History of Virginia, one can make the interesting observation that Smith constantly refers to himself as "he" instead of "I". He directly shows the reader his personal sense of pride and self confidence in himself. An example of this from the text would be when he said, "But seeing by trade and courtesy there was nothing to be had, he made bold to try such conclusions as necessity enforced; though contrary to his commission, he let fly his muskets, ran his boat on shore, whereat they all fled into the woods. Smith does have some legitimate points however, there also many that have holes in his claims too, in reality; his idealistic theory of free market is not as advantageous he contends, in fact, the free market has many disadvantages to it. The demand and need for corn was massive, it was unlikely for the demand of corn to really diminish. It should and would be seen as morally questionable, to make corn a full commodity. In the modern society, corn may be not as much of a commodity as it was back then but there still plenty of goods and services that can be considered committed such as free healthcare, educations water, energy and so forth. Isaiah berlin's idea of positive liberty is the basis of this concept that essentially, the state needs to create a society where it is for an individual to rise and progress however certain industries are needed to ensure. Put in the simplest terms, one might say that a democratic society is a free society because it is a self–determined society, and that a member of that society is free to the extent that he or she participates in its democratic process. But there are also individualist applications of the concept of positive freedom.
