Sigmund Freud left his mark in many aspects of psychology, and Erik Erikson was one of his many followers. Expanding upon Freud’s five stages of psychosexual development, Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development became one of the most well known theories of personality in psychology. Like Freud, Erikson believed personality develops in a series of stages. Unlike Freud’s theory however, Erikson describes the social experience of the ego across the entire lifespan.
