1. Applying MQTT Protocol and Node-
Red Programming in Designing IoT
based Home Automation
Engr. Oscar Bryan M. Magtibay
Electrical Engineering Department
College of Information Technology and Engineering
De La Salle Lipa
2. Background of the Study
• Internet of Things (IoT)
System of connected devices and the ability
to send or receive data over a network
• Building Energy Management System
Consist of Hardware and Software to
control and monitor devices in a Building
3. Background of the Study
• Home Automation Systems
Communication: Bluetooth, Zigbee, RF,
GSM, Wired LAN, WiFi
Protocols: Serial, HTTP
Controllers: PIC, Arduino, ESP8266
4. Background of the Study
• MQTT
Message Queuing Telemetry Transport
Lightweight publish/subscribe messaging
transport
• Node-red
Flow-based programming tool,
Originally developed by IBM
5. Objectives
• Problem:
Existing systems require additional hardware
Increase to the cost of the system
• Objective:
Determine the user and hardware requirements
Design the system architecture
Deploy system and apply MQTT and Node-red
application
Test and evaluate the results
6. Scope
• It will be limited to the number of appliances
• The hardware device will be connected to
switches of lamps and outlets for small
appliances.
• The rating of the device is limited to the rating of
the relay and current sensor to be used for the
system.
• It will utilize the existing WiFi connection.
13. Conclusion
• The selection of the hardware components meets the
needed specifications.
• The system architecture was made simple.
• The use of MQTT protocol and Node-RED application
was suitable for developing IoT systems at Home.
14. Thank You!
