“Active Reading Project”<br />School Library Media Specialist Handbook<br />By: Jennifer Jamison, Speaker<br />& Veronica Gaskill, Assistant Speaker<br />A. Cataloging/Processing<br />1. Unpack Nook Color Equipment according to district/school procedures. <br />2. Barcode Equipment (or Identify barcodes that District Technology department has given)<br />3. Turn on Nook and in Settings, Identify the email/information that is set through the digital locker. For example: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is nookfive@echalk.acboe.org through nookeight@echalk.acboe.org. Every six nooks have ONE EMAIL. <br />4. Determine Classroom/Circulation Sets<br />A.   Classroom B.   Circulation Sets<br />Circulation Set Subgroups<br />    Circulation Set A: 21-25 email: nookfive<br />    Circulation Set B: 7-12 email: nooksix<br />    Circulation Set C: **Grant Funded: 1-6 email: jjamison@acboe<br />Classroom Set Subgroups:<br />Classroom Set A: 13-18 email: nookseven<br />Classroom Set B: 19,20  email: nookeight<br />4. Through the Catalog Tab—Add Equipment and follow through with the Marc Record. <br />,[object Object]
Author Ereader
Subjects Add the titles of the Books that have been   downloaded in the system.  (Skill set: ** To search for a title of a book, subject search would be used. To search for titles that may be on a nook, you would search nook under title)<br />5. For each title that is downloaded:  <br />Add the title through the Catalog tabusing electronic book entry Title, Author, Series/Notes for Lexile/F & P <br />6. Each nook is assigned and labeled # (1-25) and placed in a jumbo bag (I used 2 gallon freezer bags).  Each “bag” will contain the Nook Tracking form listing the titles that are on each nook. I do NOT put the cords in the bag. Cords are set up in the media center at designated charging area overseen by the SLMS.  <br />B. Downloading books<br />Forms: Student Request Book Form, Teacher Request Book Form, NOOK Title tracking form and Nook ID #tracking Form. <br />1. Wireless must be on.<br /> 2. Gift cards are set up and designated via district and/or with the assistance of the Barnes & Noble Representative.  Purchasing can be done through Gift Cards or through a school credit card. Your representative can assist your district in making these purchases. <br />Have this information available:<br />Example<br />Username: jjam1@echalk.acboe.org<br />Password: ****<br />3. On the device you can shop and download on demand.  <br />4.  Through Barnes & Noble, you can view, archive, and manage titles, magazines and applications once you sign into your account. <br />5. Books that are downloaded to each NOOK are recorded on the individual NOOK ID# form. Make duplicate copies of this form for your file. <br />C. NOOKs and SLMS: Active Reading Project

  • 5. E-readers are due back by the end of the day.
  • 6. Students that are part of the Book Nook/Active Reading Cohort program are allowed to take the e-readers home once parental supervision has been established with the Acceptable Use Policy. D. Post Nook Survey<br />1. A post nook survey is posted on Echalk and in print. Students are encouraged to fill this out upon reading a book. <br />2. Using the username/password for posting reviews for books, students are expected to rate and post a review of the ebook they read on the nook color. <br />
