This document contains the responses to questions about a media production project to design a magazine. The responses indicate that the magazine was designed to target teenage and punk music audiences by incorporating conventions from magazines like Kerrang and M. The cover uses bright colors and a photo of a punk musician using direct address to attract attention. The creator learned about photo editing and page layout using software and designing the magazine helped them understand how to better pair images and text.

3. Q1
• In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products ?
4. Q1
• I tried to put in codes and conventions
that real magazines would use. Early in
the year I analysed popular magazines
code and conventions and how they
effect the reader.

5. Q1
• Once I had learnt the codes and conventions I was then able to
put them into my magazine. I made sure that the masthead was
larger than the rest of the text but the main cover line was still
dominant to the other cover lines.
I put in a pug to give
the reader incentive to
read the magazine.
Date, barcode, price and website
are all generic codes and
conventions.
The main cover star is
making direct address to
build a relationship with the
reader
6. Q1
• I was influenced by lots of different magazine.
I changed my magazine quite a bit during the
process. The first magazine that I had made
took inspiration from M magazine
I liked the simplicity of the
magazine. And also liked
the colour scheme. I also
liked the idea of the left
third.
7. Q1
• I also took inspiration from the same magazine
for the contents page. I had made sure the
word contents was most dominant even
though the other magazine didn’t have it.
I liked the column of information
on this contents page and also
the colour scheme again.
I kept the column in the second
attempt so that it relates back
to the inspiration.
8. Q1
The new magazine I took inspiration from
the punk band slipknot as they are very
edgy and eye catching. I tried to make my
magazine look like Kerrang magazine
which is very busy.
My magazine isn’t
quite as loud and in
your face as a
Kerrang magazine
however still fairly
bigger.
9. Q2
• How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
10. Q2
• My magazine is aimed at the teenage
market and anyone interested in punk
genre.
• The Kerrang magazine helped me
target these audiences because I took
inspiration from them as its very loud
and unique. Q magazine also helped
me because I was able to make it look
‘edgy’ and ‘cool’
11. Q2
The male main cover star in the magazine
is portrayed in and aggressive and
powerful way, while this does not
directly show that the male he is
dominant over women but does show he
is a dominant character.
12. Q3
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
13. Q3
• Due to the unique nature of this
magazine most major companies would
not produce it unless it was that genre
or a special edition magazine. However
this magazine could be produced by
Kerrang magazine due to its loud and
aggressive feel.
15. Q4
My magazine is aimed at the teenage
market and anyone interested in punk
genre.
I think that Kerrang magazine is similar
to mine as its very busy and loud. They
appeal to anyone who likes the rock
genre.
16. Q5
• How did you attract/ address your
audience?
17. Q5
With my cover star I chose to use direct
address to build a relationship with the
reader. I also think that my cover star
himself attracts attention because he has
attitude and looks very unique. I have
used quite bright vibrant colours which
will draw in attention. I have tried to
keep my cover lines as minimal as
possible because people don’t want to
read lots when looking at the front cover.
18. Q6
What have you learnt about technologies
from this process of constructing your
product?
19. Q6
Strengths of Pageplus and paint.net
Paint.net Pageplus
• Easier to crop
around pictures.
• Can layer things
easier
• Can move the text
around after its
finished.
• Can change the
colour of anything.
(pictures, text)
• Can highlight text
to make it stand
out.
20. Q6
Weaknesses of paint.net and Pageplus
Paint.net
• Cant move text once
you’ve exited text box
• Cant change spelling
mistakes.
Pageplus
Cropping is time
consuming and
not very accurate.
21. Q6
I had a bit of trouble with the cropping as the cover stars hair
is very fine. When I had to but the image on the background
you could see the cropping wasn’t very neat. I then used
paint.net to crop these as it is easier and neater.
First attempt After change
I also had trouble making it
look busy and fun while it still
looks cool. I decided that my
first attempt didn’t look punk
enough and wasn’t eye
catching so I changed the
photography, font and
background. It made it look
more eye catching and more
like a punk magazine.
22. Q6
I decided that I would have a front cover image
that used direct address to build a relationship
with the reader. I wanted a similar image for the
contents page put not direct address. I think this
image shows his mysterious side and gives him a
bit of attitude.
For the final image I wanted to show how he
didn’t need his band and that the soul focus on
him so I blurred the rest of his ‘band’ out to
make him main focus. This also shows his attitude
on stage and him being natural.
23. Q6
• Blogger is a simple process once I had
gotten used to it. Its really simple and
easy to make a blog post and upload
them. However sometimes it is harder
to edit the blog posts and change
images.
24. Q7
Looking back to your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to your final product?
25. Q7
I feel that I have learnt how to pair the picture to the
background and make it realistic. I have also been able
to find appropriate fonts to create the right effect.
26. Q8
How successful do you feel your end
product is in fulfilling the task? How well
does it fit the brief?
27. Q8
• I think the end product fulfils the task to
an extent. I think my magazine looks
realistic and has many of the codes and
conventions and look like it suits the
punk rock genre.
