Learning From Preliminary to Final Music Magazine Project
1. Looking back at your preliminary
task what do you feel you have
learnt the progression from it to the
full product?
2. • From the prelim task I have understood the
relevance and need for in-depth audience
research. Although I conducted a small survey for
the prelim I further advanced this to the main
project with a larger audience and participant
range and closer, in depth questions on how the
audience want a music magazine to represent
them and be constructed. To prove this I also
referred to the audience when choosing the
masthead of the magazine, and integral role and
selling point, so I understood it would be
something audiences would understand,
recognise and be confident in purchasing.
3. • I have learnt the importance of capturing an appropriate
image for the magazine and also the requirements needed
to construct the image. For example, the costume of the
models must be reflective of the genre of magazine and
audience, e.g indie clothing to be relevant to audiences not
to style the models in suits and professional attire. The angle
of the image constructed also effects the mode of address of
the magazine, for example if the dominant cover image was
a low angle shot it may establish an empowering mode of
address which may be suggestive of a rock magazine.
Because of this I learnt how to instruct my models and
create a angle reflective of the magazine. My prelim task
had a simplistic pose, with no props and a standard
photographic smile however I learnt to instruct my models
to work with props and eachother to create a dynamic pose
with limited expression yet a direct gaze to captivate
audiences and provide a personal approach and feel.
4. • I have learnt the importance of planning and drafting
throughout the construction of my final piece.
Originally, I didn’t create a flat plan for my prelim. I
learnt the importance of this through my final piece as
it allowed me to create the contents page and have a
design for the entity of the magazine ensuring fluidity
in my work and a strong sense of genre from the
magazine to be established and work with. It was
helpful when creating the cover lines on my contents
page allowing me to create categories easily with the
corrext page numbers despite it not being in
chronological order. I’ve learnt what content varies in
music magazines such as Q and Mojo such as reviews
to interviews and how they engage audiences with
competitions and pull quotes.
5. • With my main construction I realised the importance of the small
additional features magazines include to complete the composition
of the pages. For example the use of convincing conventions like:
folios, web links, editors notes. These elements I included are truly
reflective of a magazine on sale in newsagents and looking back, at
my preliminary task the lack of these elements creates a somewhat
unprofessional and mediocre appeal, it being obvious of poor
quality. The contents page of my prelim included cover lines
however had no further summary underneath. This lack of indepth
detail isn’t sufficient as readers may still be unaware of the true
contents of the magazine, ive learnt the importance of engaging the
reader through this and creating an entertaining and easy to read
composition in order to satisfy the needs of the reader.
Furthermore, on my images in my prelim, although I anchored them
to a specific coverline, there was no caption to the addition images.
After surveying multiple magazines I found it was uncommon to
feature a photo without a caption as it is the point on the page that
attracts the audience’s gaze they may want to read on and find out
more about the image.
6. • Looking back, if I could change an element I would create more cliff
hangers and pull quotes in the captions to my images. This I believe would
intrigue audiences with curiosity and encourage them to read the
magazine.
•
• Throughout the project I have learnt how magazines have developed
through convergence. Although the traditional methods of magazine
publication remain they have expanded to meet with the development of
society in the digital age. For example ,many magazines now have official
website with access to content inside the issue, my magazine also does
this at www.amplify.com. Furthermore, I discovered magazines are
downloadable on apple devices through the newsstand platform where
the exact issue is featured in the online format. Magazines such as Q have
specialised apps for on the go content and interactivity with audiences
such as feedback comments on videos uploaded. It also allows magazines
to delve into more depth with content such as videos of their interviews
featured inside. To encourage active audiences I noticed the magazines
contained links to various forms of social media which I didn’t include or
know about on my preliminary task yet made sure was included in my final
construction.
