2. An infant's body comprises of 75% fluid at birth, while adults stand at 60%. Fluids
are very essential for better functioning of cells and removing toxic waste from
the body. As per the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), children aged 4-13
need to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.
How many litres of water is required by children?
1. Girls falling in 9-13 years require 1.3 to 1.5 litres of water per day.
2. Boys ranging from 9-13 years require 1.5 to 1.7 litres of water per day.
3. Both, boys and girls aged 4-8 need 1.1 to 1.3 litres of water per day.
Children don’t recognize thirst as their minds are engaged in other activities. But
on days when the temperature is escalating high accompanied by harsh heat
waves, it is important that your children stay indoors and dehydrated. With a set

3. Simple tips to keep their fluids in balance
1. Fruits like watermelon, strawberries, melon, berries should be given.
Cucumbers, broccoli, lettuce, carrot and such vegetables should be provided
throughout the day. They are rich in minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, fibre, that
help in the overall growth of children. As per facts, fruits and veggies comprise
80%-90% of water, thus it is advisable to make it mandatory for all three meals.
2. Make water look more colourful by adding their favourite fruit. This can be
done by adding all time favourite strawberry cubes or infuse it with mint, lemon,
watermelon and such. Make them happy with fancy straws or mugs, funny
shaped ice trays or water bottles with their desired colour or favourite cartoon
character.
3. Instead of bringing food items from outside, indulge your child in making
homemade ice creams, kulfis, popsicles or no sugar added fruit juices.
It is also important that water is made accessible that matches their short stature.
Equip your refrigerator with water bottles so that they can grab a bottle
