2. Global health for public health students in
Somaliland
●Global Health module is intended to introduce global health for Masters’ in Public
Health (MPH) students in Somaliland.
● The course is an introduction to the field of global health.
● It particularly focuses on mental health in low and middle income countries, from a
global health perspective.
● The ONLINE course will be delivered through:
○ Lectures/group discussions, essays
○ Mid term exam
○ Final exam
3. Course objective
●This course provides an introduction to global health.
●The course will include public health aspects of common themes of
global health importance.
●Students will be exposed to the epidemiological, public health
interventions and preventive measures of global health in the SDG
agenda.
●The course will show public health scenarios demonstrating global
health programming for students.
●It will introduce the growing importance of global health and
international public health programmes and practices.
4. Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Describe key global health conditions.
2. Explain the concept of the global burden of diseases .
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of preventive and promotive factors for international health.
4. Explain the history and impact of global health.
5. Demonstrate skills in contemporary global health programming in low-and-middle-income-
countries.
6. Show understanding of the global health impact of disasters.
7. Indicate public health streaming in complex humanitarian settings.
8. State the mental health implications of areas of public health importance in Somaliland including
women of childbearing age, children, adolescents, gender-based violence and post-conflict
challenges.
