Editor's Notes
Sustainability includes many aspects, but some of the most important are Funding/Maintaining, Equality between schools, and Environmental Impact. Funding and maintaining: This aspect of sustainability is all about how technology in schools is funded and how technology is updated. For example, some schools will receive a personal donation that will go towards new technology devices, but what will the school do when all the donated money is gone? They have no way to maintain that new technological level unless that personal donator maintained it for them. Inequality:There is a huge problem of inequality of funding between states. Some states receive hundreds of dollars of funding per student, while other states only receive $30 bucks. Environmental Impact: What happens when old technology is thrown out? Environmental impact covers the problem of how we dispose of the old technology devices.
Funding is directly connected to how the school receives money for technology, sports, books, etc. Maintaining refers to how the school is able to maintain their technological updates (or other updates). For example, when a school receives a personal donation to buy computers, what will the school do when those devices become outdated? They will not be able to maintain that technological advancement, and soon, they will fall behind in modernization and have all outdated equipment.
Federal Funding: This type of funding consists of grants, loans, scholarships, mortgages loans, insurance and more approved by federal stature. State Funding: Is the budget of individual districts within a state. The state constitution approves how much individual districts are allowed to spend, what they spend the money one, as long as the dispersal between districts.
Funding for education is different for every state. There were 10 states that did not receive any awards in competitive stimulus grants. What problem is caused by each state, district, and school receiving different amounts of funding?
Inequality is one of biggest problems sustainability deals with. This is because poverty makes it almost impossible to fix this problem. Wealthier schools receive more money than ones located in poorer neighborhoods; although, it should be exactly opposite.
Schools located in high poverty neighborhoods receive less funding from the government. This is because the taxes paid from those neighborhoods is much, much less than those paid in the wealthier neighborhoods.
This video emphasizes the problem of inequality in education. Obviously, the “No Child Left Behind” act that Bush administered did not work because many children are being left behind in aspects of providing an EQUAL education to every child.
Outdated, old, and broken electronics are being recycled in larger dump areas. This is one problem that integrating technology in education creates. If we were to always update the technology in the schools, there would be a lot of thrown away wastes. These old electronics are effecting the earth and surrounding individuals.
Education is effect greatly by sustainability. Our education system has been struggling with this issue and has had trouble finding ways to resolve it. With the decreasing funding that schools have been receiving, it does not look like this issue will be resolved any time soon. Funding is low, poverty is to high, and the environment would be greatly impacted by maintaining technology in education – in a negative way.
