3. 3. The Coalition for Adolescent Girls
The Coalition for Adolescent Girls was founded six years ago by the United Nations and the Nike Foundation.
The coalition focuses on the providing the world’s 600 million girls with equal access to education, employment, and adequate health care, the benefits will be passed on to her children, her community and her country ("Coalition for Adolescent Girls," 2010).
The Coalition for Adolescent Girls focuses on:
Collecting and distributing the facts that describe the positive change girls have on their communities.
Identifying the girl-specific actions and investments that will ignite change.
Forming a community of like-minded organizations with diverse expertise to inform our collective work (“Coalition for Adolescent Girls”, 2011).
3
4. 4. The Coalition for Adolescent Girls
The Coalition for Adolescent Girls website is a great resource for youth developers. This website provides comprehensive research on girls in the developing world. The research includes reports on education, health, global development from a girl’s perspective, and a global action agenda. Also included on the website is a robust compilation of research about girls from many different organizations.
In addition to research the website for the Coalition for Adolescent Girls also features action plans for involvement and advocacy, which would be useful to youth development practitioners who work with or for girls.
This website would be useful as a starting point for research related to girls and as an introduction to girls and how poverty affects them in developing countries. In addition to vast amounts of information on the website, the site is user friendly and it is easy to navigate. It would behoove youth development professionals to add this site to their list of resources.
4
