1. Entry slip: What is the “pulmonary circulatory
system”?
Lesson 4.8 with Lab- Explain the meaning of blood
pressure readings and identify the normal.
(p323-324) of Biology-McGraw-Hill Ryerson)
I. Terms:
a.mmHg: “millimetres of mercury”; a way of
measuring pressure
b.hypertension: high blood pressure
II. Systolic Pressure:
a.The highest pressure, or force, on the
blood of the cardiac system occurs when
the left ventricle contracts to force all the
blood out of that chamber and into the
aorta.
b.Factors causing S.P. to increase include:
i. Heavy lifting or exercise (heart needs
to get more blood to muscles)
III.Diastolic Pressure:
2. a.The lowest pressure that the blood
experiences occurs just before the left
ventricle contracts.
b.Factors causing D.P. to increase include:
i. Highly salty diet (causes water
retention and more plasma in blood)
ii. Being under stress (more released
adrenaline).
IV.Blood Pressure Readings:
a.Generally, the lower the better for both
S.P. and D.P.
b.Readings are given as systolic pressure
over diastolic pressure
c. Normal is 120mmHg/80mmHg
d. Hypertension: 140mmHg/90mmHg; your
doctor will likely tell you to eat less salt
and exercise more to decrease the extra
strain on your heart.
