2. Main headings :-
● What is arterial blood pressure?
● Types of blood pressure.
● Sphygmomanometer and its types.
● Procedure for measurement of arterial blood pressure.
● Blood pressure chart.
● Factors affecting blood pressure.
● Precautions during measurement of blood pressure.
3. Arterial blood pressure:-
Blood pressure is the force exerted by your blood against your arteries. As your
heart pumps, it forces blood out through arteries that carry the blood throughout
your body. The arteries keep tapering off in size until they become tiny vessels,
called capillaries. At the capillary level, oxygen and nutrients are released from
your blood and delivered to the organs.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg.
4. Types of blood pressure :-
There are two types of blood pressure:
1. Systolic blood pressure:- Systolic blood pressure refers to the pressure inside
your arteries when your heart is pumping.
2. Diastolic blood pressure:- Diastolic pressure is the pressure inside your
arteries when your heart is resting between beats.
5. Sphygmomanometer and its types:-
Sphygmomanometer is a device which is used for measuring blood pressure.
There are three types of sphygmomanometer:-
● Mercury
● Aneroid
● Digital or Electronic
6.
7. Measuring arterial blood pressure:-
First, a cuff is placed around your arm and inflated with a pump until the
circulation is cut off. A small valve slowly deflates the cuff, and the doctor
measuring blood pressure uses a stethoscope, placed over your arm, to listen for
the sound of blood pulsing through the arteries. That first sound of rushing blood
refers to the systolic blood pressure; once the sound fades, the second number or
last sound indicates the diastolic pressure.
8. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and recorded with
the systolic number first, followed by the diastolic number. For example, a normal
blood pressure would be recorded as something under 120/80 mm Hg.
10. Factors affecting blood pressure:-
● Smoking
● Coffee and other caffeinated drinks
● Recent physical activity
● Emotional state of person
● To much salt in the diet
● To much alcohol consumption
● Stress
11. Treatments for low blood pressure patients :-
● Eat a diet higher in salt.
● Drink lots of nonalcoholic fluids.
● Limit alcoholic beverages.
● Drink more fluids during hot weather and while sick with a viral illness, such
as a cold or the flu.
● Avoid heavy lifting.
● Medicines like midodrine, flurocordison etc.
12. Treatments for high blood pressure patients:-
● Walk and exercise regularly.
● Reduce sodium or salt intake.
● Drink less alcohol.
● Eat more potassium, calcium and magnesium rich foods.
● Cut added sugar and refined carbs.
● Try meditation.
● Medicines like thiazide diuretics, angiotensin II receptor blockers etc.
