6. Altivo (Vineyard Selection)
Torrontés - 2010
North Region, Salta Area, Cafayate Valley
Argentina
13% vol.
92% Torrontés, 8% Gewürtztraminer
The young and talented Winemaker at Altivo Cristian Garcia, has
crafted a beautiful Torrontes from a 80 yr old vineyard in Cafayate in
the province of Salta. Steely mineral characters provide the structure.
Lush fruit flavors coat the palate. With zero oak, the wine exhibits
great freshness and wonderful depth of flavor.
The vineyard is planted on land purchased by the pioneering
Eugenio Bustos. The 400 hectares under vine are about 1.5 hours
drive south of the bustling regional city of Mendoza. It seems the
perfect place to plant vines. With the Andes ever present to the west,
an abundance of pure "melt water" when required, the vines are
nurtured by long sunny days, and cool nights.

Malbec - 2010
Cuyo Region, Mendoza
Argentina
14.5% vol
95% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Beautiful deep violet color with exploding aromas of blackberry, black
cherry, and violets framed by hints of oak and mint. The wonderful aromas
are mirrored on the palate, and they are joined by ripe plum fruit and a hint
of toasty vanilla, bittersweet chocolate, and a hint of mint on the finish.
Susana Balbo applied to study nuclear physics in Bariloche. Her parents
refused to let her leave Mendoza so she decided to follow the family
business (viticulture) professionally, challenging contemporary social
beliefs since at that time no women had graduated as winemakers.
Susana earned a BA degree in Enology in 1981 with honors as the best
graduate, becoming the first woman enologist in Argentina. After working
at various wineries she founded Dominio del Plata in 1999.
