Planet Of The Apes Themes
War for the Planet of the Apes is the third installment in the reboot series of the iconic franchise.
The first entry in the trilogy, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was a surprisingly good film that
managed to be more than just standard blockbuster fare, but it wasn't until its sequel, 2014's Dawn
of the Planet of the Apes, that the franchise upped the ante by introducing extremely thought–
provoking themes and an emotionally heavy plot. War manages to build even more upon the tone
and themes introduced in the previous entries and musters up a film truly worthy of the praise that it
is sure to receive.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film follows the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes after the
U.S. military was called to fight a tribe of genetically advanced apes lead by Caesar (Andy Serkis).
Through a series of events, Caesar gives up his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At times, the film feels like a Shakespearian tragedy, at other times it alludes to Moses and Christ,
and there are even some aspects that can be interpreted as being referential to recent political events.
Morality is a featured theme throughout the film, and with that comes many thoughts that may leave
the audience pondering their own sense of ethics. Of course, the audience will only get what they
allow themselves to take away from the film, but it's easy to say that there is plenty of material to
dwell on after the credits roll.
It's not very often that a film trilogy is consistently good, and it's even more rare for the sequels to
continuously improve upon the predecessors. Planet of the Apes has proven that it is quite capable
of accomplishing this feat. With excellent directing, writing, and an incomparable performance from
Andy Serkis, War for the Planet of the Apes manages to bring a powerfully emotional and utterly
fantastic conclusion to one of the most extraordinary trilogies of the new

Analysis Of Alfred Hitchcock's Film 'Shadow Of A Doubt'
Alfred Hitchcock's film "Shadow of a Doubt" is a psychological thriller in which a girl and her
uncle share many things: the name Charlie, their family, and a telepathic connection. When Charlie
Newton's uncle comes into town, she immediately recognizes that Charlie Oakley, her uncle, is
hiding something. Unfortunately, her telepathic connection did not tell her that his secret was he
being the "Merry Widow Murderer." As Newton comes closer and closer to the truth, she also comes
closer and closer to deadly accidents. This particular scene demonstrates the friction between the
two Charlies as Newton is about to tell Oakley that the police have the means to identify him.

It is revealed that he was about to be apprehended when he ran into the propeller of an airplane. This
gruesome death meant that he was identified by his clothes–all initialed "C.O'H." Both men agree
that the case is closed for good as they walk off. Newton and Oakley remain on screen as they stare
at Mr. Newton and Herbie.
Shot 7 is a close–up of Newton who has a bewildered look on her face as she turns her head towards
Oakley.
Shot 8 is a close–up of Oakley who looks absolutely smug and delighted at this new development.
He declares himself hungry and turns towards the door to let himself in. The shot becomes a
medium shot as he practically skips up the stairs in joy before stopping at the top and turning around
looking like he forgot something.
Shot 9 is a Point–of–View shot that demonstrates the view of Oakley at the top of the stairs, looking
down at Newton who in standing in the middle of the doorway staring at him expectantly.
Shot 10 once again goes back to a medium shot of Oakley who slowly turns around and continues
on as the screen fades out.
Shot 11 begins as a fade in of Oakley walking towards that camera as suspenseful music plays. He
then quickly walks away pacing until he comes to the window.
Shot 12 is a Point–of–View of Oakley looking out the window. It shows Newton walking on the
sidewalk of the house.
Shot 13 is a tilt that begins with Oakley's face and then drops to his hands that let go of the cigar and

Symbolism In The Whale Rider
Identify an important character in the film. Explain why the character is important and discuss what
techniques the director uses to portray the character and the effect on the audience?
By Tishya Kapoor
In the film, The Whale Rider, by Nicki Caro, is about a young girl named Paikea Apirana (Pai) who
is destined to become a leader and lead the community. However Koro, Pai's grandfather expects a
male leader to lead the community as he expects Maori tradition and culture to carry on. Koro
refuses Pai from inheriting that leadership as she is a female. An important character in this film is
Koro as he expects he is the current leader of the Maori community. But now that he is getting old,
he needs to find individuals who have those leadership attributes in order to be a successful leader.
However, he will not be able to pass on the legacy and heritage as he ... Show more content on

For example, when Koro expects one of the boys to retrieve his whale tooth underwater. However
the boys have failed to retrieve it and Koro is disappointed as the whale tooth was a symbol of his
leadership and power. There is a close up of the whale tooth slowly drifting away in the murky
waters. Also when Koro has discovered the beached whales, he drops his stick. This is significant as
this is also a symbol of his leadership and power. It then shows a close up of the stick and the stick
being washed away.
In conclusion, the film The Whale Rider has left a strong impression on me as I have understood the
character more in depth and how the character is important in this film through a variety of effective
film techniques. I have gained a lot of understanding through the director's messages and ways of
communicating through a variety of film shots, symbolism and sound effects. The director has used
effective film techniques in order for the audience to engage with the film and to get a better and in

The Effectiveness Of Vertigo In Hitchcock's 'Citizen Kane'
In 2012, Vertigo replaced "Citizen Kane" as best movie ever made in the Sight and Sound poll. Film
producer Marco Müller describes the genius of Vertigo by saying "Paranoia and obsession have
never looked better". The technical aspects mirror the narrative, and the experience of the audience
mirrors the experience of the main character. Scotty Ferguson faces a fear of heights, which causes
him to have vertigo. Hitchcock weaves this theme of disorientation through the movie by supporting
it with narrative, production design, and skilled camera techniques.
Production design is important because it carries out the theme in a visual sense. Setting supports
the story by giving us context. The setting is a statement whether it's American City or explicitly
named, the setting can set a specific tone, sometimes having such a large impact that it is credited as
a character in the story. When we see Midge and Scotty in her cluttered apartment, and through the
window we see the San Francisco skyline, it's beautiful and dizzying. San Francisco is significant
because it is a city of heights, the very thing that tortures Scotty throughout the film. The audience
watches from Scottie's point of view as he drives up steep roads, feeling a sense of caution on
Scotty's behalf. Hitchcock uses iconography to establish setting by having major events of the story
take place in places synonymous with San Francisco. He saves Madeline right in front of the Golden
Gate Bridge, Madeline feels possessed by Carlotta in front of Scotty in Muir Woods and then
eventually kills herself at Mission San Juan Bautista. Another aspect of production design is
costume, which plays a large role in Vertigo. The first time we meet Madeline (at a San Francisco
institution, Ernie's) she is the most vibrant thing in the room, her green sash clashes with the red
walls of the room. As they prepare to leave the restaurant, Madeline steps into the light, and
everything else around her fades. We see a perfect profile with her at the center, this is important
because it's Scotty's very first impression of

The Workings of Cinematrography
Depth of field is an element in cinematography that means a range of distance between objects and
how they are being shot in sharp focus. Depth controls the perspective relations by depicting what
planes will be in focus. There is also a director's decision to choose a selective view. It is used to
focus on only one plane and the others being blurred. Selective focusing automatically makes us pay
attention to one area equally visibly but not all being in sharp view. It also examines deep focus and
racking focus. Deep focus is a tight shot of an object; it's a shorter lens and offers better lighting to
be focused on. Attention is on several areas all being visible. Racking focus also known as "pulling
focus". The point of this focus is to transfers the attention from the foreground and the background.
It overall makes one action blurred and another in a sharp focus.
In the film Hurt Locker depth of field is very present. The clip I chose to give the example is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dtQqy1jDUo "We are on the same team". When American
soldiers venture into the desert and come upon unidentified civilians in an SUV. Startled to see they
were dressed in head rags and carrying guns, they drove closer to examine what was going on. The
depth of field is present due to the camera angles of the action of the military tank moving, the
reaction of the civilians, and the soldiers approaching them. As the camera directs the attention out
of the wind shield, it seems to be

The Opportunities and Limitations in Using a Single Camera
In the early days of film making the director would not have the choice of using the multi–camera
setups and editing suites that we have today. He or she would have just one camera to shoot all the
shots needed and then when it came to the editing process, all the shots would need to be selected,
the different frames sliced apart, and spliced back together in the desired order. As you can imagine
this was a time consuming process, and although this appeared to be a big limitation on some
television genre's at the time such as sit–com and live broadcasts, it allowed the film industry to
flourish.
The use of the single camera drew the director into a more creative
role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a great time saving device, allowing more of the action to be packed into the show, but also
offers great creative ideas, especially for mystery and crime films where suspense can be created by
not knowing what's lurking around the next corner.
Casting for a film is very important, as you need the right people to act the roles that the director has
in his head, but a good actor also needs to be quite patient concentrated and rehearsed, for shots
have to be repeated many times.
One of the problems of multi–camera techniques is that it's not portable. You can not enter peoples'
homes and setup a full 6 or seven camera studio, its just not practical or cost effective. This is
certainly not a problem of single camera techniques, allowing much increased accessibility, but with
it comes an increased responsibility towards the law, both in assuring the health and safety of the
crew and any member of public whose facilities are being used for the shoot, and any legal issues
that need to be cleared up in pre–production. A full risk assessment of all considered sets to ensure
that the proper facilities are present and the lives of any crew member is not at risk, i.e. there must
be a fire extinguisher and a first aid box, any gas fires need to have been certified within the last 12
months, etc. One

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Although the opening scene of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is meant to be lighthearted and appealing
to children, upon further examination the discriminatory treatment of Roger reveals the racist
undertones. The scene begins in the cartoon universe with Roger Rabbit and a cartoon baby, named
Baby Herman, that Roger is left as the caretaker. Throughout the scene the baby undermines his
authority in almost every way as he tries to reach a cookie jar on top of the refrigerator. The
refrigerator, however falls on Roger, and he then produces birds instead of stars. The director then
calls cut and the camera shifts to the live–action characters who are shooting the scene and are very
angry with Roger. First, an important visual is the framing of Baby Herman versus Roger.
Throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This framing can be viewed from a racial standpoint. Baby Herman is meant to represent the human
character in cartoon form, since in fact he is a cartoon–human baby. However, Roger is a straight
cartoon, and by framing Baby Herman always above him and by having Roger always deal with the
mayhem that Baby Herman, it creates clearly displays a racial divide. The minority Roger is being
characterized as lower than Herman to depict his inferiority to the human representation Herman
who undermines Roger so easily, despite being a baby. Finally, examined were the camera angles
and actions of the characters throughout the scene. While Roger is pleading for the director to give
him another chance, the camera is positioned at the human height level while they move throughout
the scene. The camera is stationed at human eye level, displaying the dominance that the humans
have over Toons. Yet so simple, it creates an effective power divide in the scene that the human
characters have over the Toons. Reinforcing this point is the fact that the facial expressions of the
humans are more visible than the

"Star Wars" was arguably the first in a new breed of high concept, high budget sci–fi action films. It
was directed by George Lucas and originally released in only a few cinemas in 1977. However, the
buzz around the film grew, and it is now one of the highest grossing films of all time, and along with
its sequels, prequels and re–mastered re–releases, has a large cult following. I feel this is because of
Lucas` ability to engage the audience through careful use of sound and camera technique; The use
of the scrolling story in space sets up many audience expectations, that the action will be set in
space, and that it will base around a struggle between the rebels and the Empire. Narration is a fairly
formal method of exposition, linked to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We also realize they are important because their bright metallic colouring makes them stand out
from the background of uniformed rebels. Their voices are quite comical; C3P0's English accent is
so camp and inappropriate to the action packed setting that the audience find themselves laughing.
R2D2's language is not easily decipherable, and so many laughs are gained by inferring what he has
said by C3P0's response. This section introduces the audience to the idea that these characters will
provide the comic relief for the film, and indeed, their presence in this section allows the audience
to relieve a little of their tension by laughing, this is important because of the family based nature of
the film, parents do not want their young children to be too scared. The camera moves to a tight shot
of the door, framing it within the screen, showing that all attention is now diverted to it. The sparks
from the cutters are exaggerated , to emphasise their importance, and run around the screen, creating
the impression that the intruders are breaking into the audience's real world, further allying them
with the rebels. The Storm troopers break through, and an eye line shot from their perspective is
used to show the rebels firing back; connoting a "new perspective" has arrived. The cutters continue,
and when the camera cuts back, they have created a smoke screen , and enigma is created as to what
will appear next. At this point, all sound cuts to

Do The Right Thing Analysis
There are various elements that contribute to the significance of a film. Cinematography, is one
important element in which the camera is used to capture visual images through a number of other
controllable elements such as; camera lens, framing, scale, movement etc. Editing is another
fundamental component of film studies in which different shots are put together in a coherent
sequence in order to make meaning of a film.
In the film "Do The Right Thing" by Spike Lee, cinematography and editing serve as critical
components to emphasize the racial tensions between the various characters. Set in a predominantly
black neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, the action of the film consists of a series of unfolding
events that take place over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Camera distance is also effectively used in this film. In several scenes in Do The Right Thing, the
camera distance, especially through the use of close up shots, is particularly important in the film.
There are a number of scenes in the film that are characterized by close–up shots and majority of the
film is made up of close–up shots. In one scene that takes place at Sal's Pizzeria, the two characters
Mookie and Pino have an important conversation about racism and society. We learn through
Mookie about Pino's negative perspective on black people or as he calls "niggers." In this scene, the
camera keeps moving back and forth between the two of them as they converse, and we get an
insight into their personalities through their pensive conversation about race, society and
civilization.
The use of various camera techniques such as canted frames, low–angled, high–angled and close up
shots, as well as camera distance, enhances the struggle between the characters. The use of such
techniques not only allows the audience to get an extensive insight into the many different
characters, but also helps us understand the relationships between them and how all of these factors
contribute to the overarching theme of racism in the film. The use of these camera rapid movements

Walter White Character Analysis
In the famous television show 'Breaking Bad' the audience will see the main character, Walter
White's, evolve from a tedious, monotonous and weak–minded high school teacher who has to have
two jobs just to get by to a wild, bold, strong–minded methamphetamine manufacture. The event
causing up to Walter's strong character development was the discovery of Walter's illness. Film
techniques such as lighting, camera angles, hued colours and sound effects have been utilised to
convey the strong identity development of Walter.
At the beginning of the Pilot episode, Walter White is displayed as a very ordinary, typically,
mundane man who clearly views his life as boring, predictable and has little or no power at work or
home. This is shown through the camera angles, lighting, hue colours, sound effects and editing as
they display how repetitive and uninterested he feels about his life. This is evident in one of the first
scenes, where Walter is on a stair stepper working out. The director creatively used the dull, balm
sound of the stair stepper to secretly communicate to the viewers the repetitiveness of Walters life as
the diegetic sound effect is repeated over and over. Suddenly the scene cuts to Walter eating
breakfast with his family adding to the thought that he has a very ordinary mundane life. Though the
lighting is much brighter than the previous scene, there is still a blue hue which represents how
unhappy he feels about his life as if his facial expression weren't evident enough; especially when
Skyler (his wife) and Walter Jr. (his son) were fighting which appeared to be a recurring argument
shown by through both characters exaggerating the word 'again'. Through this scene, Walters wife is
clearly in charge, shown through the slightly high camera angle used on Walter when his wife tells
him to tell their son to eat his veggie bacon thus adding to Walters frail identity. [linking needs to be

As the episode progress, Walter continuously hints that something is wrong which is communicated
through him continuous coughing throughout the episode adding to his frail identity as being sick
may be considered a sign of weakness. Film techniques such as camera angles, sound effects,

Gattaca Film Techniques Essay
In the film, Gattaca, the director Andrew Niccol uses film techniques to show the significance of an
event. The society of Gattaca discriminates based on an individual's genetics. Vincent is the main
character of the film who is classified as an invalid due to his genetics, however, his brother Anton
is a genetically engineered valid. Vincent and Anton play a game of 'chicken' in the sea to see who
can swim further and who turns back first. In the first swimming scene Vincent loses, however the
second swimming scene is a big turning point for Vincent as he pushes himself to keep up with his
brother and ends up saving him from drowning. When Anton confronts Vincent about his identity in

This swimming scene is set during the night with low lighting. This can be compared to the previous
swimming scenes where the colours were more warm or gold. Andrew Niccol used low lighting in
the shot of Vincent looking up at the dark night sky to show the viewers that there is nothing
between him and his dream. The purpose of low lighting is to emphasise the uncertainty and
seriousness of the race, which is no longer a game between two children. For Vincent, it is proving
to his brother that they are equal and is his final obstacle he faces before he leaves Earth. At the start
of the scene where they are standing side by side on the shore with the lighting behind them having

The Film Blood Diamond By Edward Zwick
In the film Blood Diamond, the director Edward Zwick uses the opening and closing scenes to show
the socio–political effects of western consumerism in an underdeveloped society, in particular the
Conflict Diamond trade and its effects, he uses this to highlight the idea of the 'boy being the
diamond' within the film. Consumerism is seen to be the cause of death and destruction in the once
beautiful landscape of Africa with portrait shots of mountains and beautiful sunsets. In both scenes
the director uses camera shots, sounds and overall mis–en–scene/editing to create these
themes/ideas.
The socio–political thriller brings chaos and brutality to the forefront of what is a little known
conflict trade. While the movie is full with dynamic characters the real "star" that is brought to light
is the diamond, of which many audience members could be adorned in, making the realistic side of
the film more obvious. The movie aims in this way to leave to audience with the question "Is there
Blood on my hands?"
In the first scene Zwick uses camera angles and dialogue/sound to emotionally grab the viewers and
to shock/intrigue them. The scene opens with a fire lit match, showing a poor family, everything is
quiet and settled in their home front until a group of rebels storm their small village and take
Solomon captive. Against the background once portrayed as serene, a man has his hands amputated
and is subsequently killed by the rebels. The scene also contains cross cuts from the

La Jete Essay
La Jetée is a film that challenges audience's expectations and the conventions of filmmaking. The
film defines itself as "un photo–roman, or "a photo–novel." It creates a narrative using still images
along with music, sound effects, and voice–over narration. In this way, the film becomes a hybrid of
both literature and cinema. Its unique storytelling style build on each still image's poetic meaning
and lead viewers to reevaluate their perception of cinema and its relation to time and movement. It
is a testament to films being able to exist without movement.

It utilizes other elements to build a narrative and still be effective. La Jetée activates other senses
which leads an audience to pay attention to other characteristics of a scene. Its use of editing, sound,
music, as well as varying camera positions provide information as well as a poetic meaning that
goes beyond what can be experienced from a photograph (Kawin, 1982, 15). The use of dissolves
and quick cuts is one obvious tool. In the final scene of La Jetée, when the people of the future
transport the hero/narrator back to the jetty to meet his beloved, a transition from an image of the
hero's face is dissolved into an image of him in a crowd on the jetty in the past. The transition of the
sound and music are also involved. As the one image dissolves into the other, the music of the future
are dissolved away into the sounds of a clock tower and planes. From this simple use of visual and
audio edits, viewers are provided information which define and clarify the progression of the story
(Kawin, 1984–1985, 42). Specifically, it emphasizes the change in location and time. As the scene
progresses, the hero begins to run toward the woman. As this happens, the rhythm of cuts speeds up
to the point where it is one still per leg movement. These stills' durations almost reach the motion of
actual running, but before he can reach continuous movement, he is shot and

Analysis Of ' On The Waterfront '
"On the Waterfront" was photographed in such a captivating way. Boris Kaufman had a vision ahead
of his time. Many scenes in the movie are understood, not just through the script, but from the
cinematography as well. Three scenes in particular catch my eye. It is the artistic style and flare of
conveying the same idea in multiple mediums. The first scene is when Terry and Edie are on the
rooftop at Joey's pigeon coup. This scene portrays the moment in which I believe was the catalyst
for Terry that lead him to be truthful to Evie and stand up to Friendly. The second scene that I will
speak about is when "Kayo" Dugan is killed. When the preacher is giving his speech to all the
longshoremen. That speech was a testament of one man speaking out for what he knew was right.
The third scene that I will choose for this essay is where Terry walks to Friendly's dock office. After
the fight, Terry's march to work puts you on the edge of your seat. Each scene has depth that few
movies achieve. The first scene is the rooftop scene with Terry and Evie. The whole scene is shot
with natural light. Kaufman begins the scene with a long shot of the rooftop. Terry is waving a long
stick with a rag at the top of it to call back the pigeons to the coup. I believe Terry waving the
"white flag" was an implied surrender to Evie's love and the truth of what really happened to Joey.
Even though, Terry is still conflicted afterwards, this is his first step toward standing up to the

Secondhand Lions Film Analysis
The director's use of film techniques showed significant changes through the characters in the film
'Secondhand Lions'.The big, significant events that changed the characters are when Hub said to
Walter that he will stay around to say his 'man speech', when Walter found out his mother was lying

much more.
The first important event that started shaping Walter is when he finds out that his mother lied to him.

at his two uncles' house and goes to Las Vegas. Walter finds this out by a phone call to The Fort

Analysis Of ' Run Lola Run And Street Art ' I Love You '
Tom Tykwer 1998 film, Run Lola Run and street art 'I love you' by Banksy both explore
distinctively visual elements though various film techniques and visual techniques. The two texts
aim to manipulate the way in which we explore and interpret the images we are exposed to in our
world. One main reason these pieces interrelate is because both texts utilise various techniques in
order to create distinctively visual elements which explores the basic aspects of life–love, time and
chance. Banksy's street art, 'I love you' expresses the notion that there is a time restraint on love, this
is similar to how Tykwer conveys the importance of time, chance and destiny and its impact on the
individual though his unique tripartite structure and film techniques. Both the film and street art
manipulate aspects of construction to create distinctively visual texts.
Composers manipulate their texts to represent their chosen ideas of love and its importance through

Run Lola Run, elements such as the importance of love and relationships. Both Twyker and Banksy

Analysis Of The Movie ' Rita Ha ' By Noah Baumbach
Chosen Clip: Clip 1 from Frances Ha (2012) Dir Noah Baumbach Directed by Noah Baumbach in
2012, Frances Ha follows young New Yorker Frances Halliday (Greta Gerwig) who, at age 27, is
living with her best friend Sophie (Mickey Summer) whilst in an attempt to get her life heading in a
succesful direction. The film examines and humanizes the importance of growing up in different
cultures, experiencing the highs and lows of a sacred friendship, the realities of early adulthood and
making sacrifices in order to get to where you need to be. The stand out aspect of cinematography
used in this scene and Frances Ha as a film throughout is the careful choice by Baumbach to shoot

Omtting colour and using natural lighting helps not only this scene but the entire story to develop as
it provokes more concentration from the viewer into this raw dialouge and acting. The classical style
of cinematography is used by Levy in shooting Frances Ha. The scene is shot with a steadycam –
evident through a smooth pan following Dan from the couch to the kitchen. For the majority of the
scene, the camera is fixed in one position on Frances and Dan through a mid shot as they are seated
on the couch. This shot size is framed around the subjects for a measure of distance (Bordwell and
Thompson, 2008). The pair are sitting very close together and the shot further outlines this by being
close to the subjects – without being labelled as close up shot. It is a tight frame, with a tight fix on
the subjects. This communicates to the audience that these two are a couple and they are very
comfortable with eachother and have been for a long time. The depth of field and focus range is
very slim. This is a result of the distance between the closet and farthest objects in the scene being
very small. Baumbach wants to focus soley on the characters in this scene as the position of the
frame is extremely neutral. The lens is level with the pair sitting down on the couch with no high or
low angles used. For Baumbach, it was not a case of symbolic cinematography, but instead to
provide a more a neutral perspective to develop the

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Night '
The third scene in this episode is in the hotel's restaurant area, where all of the characters gather to
have breakfast together. The lighting in this particular scene only focuses on the are where the main
characters will be at. For instance, the table they are going to sit at, and the buffet area, where Joey
and Chandler take some food for their breakfast. While Joey and Chandler walk to the buffet area,
the camera follow both of them, in other word, a dolly shot. Although the shot was fairly shaky, it

While the camera was panning, we could see at the right frame that Monica is actually looking at
them, then she talk to Phoebe about her getting married to Chandler. We could see clearly that the
director try to show what normal life would be, boys talk and girls talk. Seeking friends for advices
just like in a real life situation.
In the next scene, Chandler and Monica then decided to go to the casino, letting the dice decide
whether they will get married or not. While they are walking through the casino, the sound only
focuses on the characters, ambience sound is rarely heard, where in the background, we can see
people talking to one another, a waiter bringing drinks to the customers, and people playing the
machine. At one point, we can hear cash noises from the machine, but even that, the sound is very
small that the audience might not have catch it. When Monica throw the dice to the table, we could
hear the dice rolling on the table clearly, and the worker talking clearly. During this scene, the
director want the audience to focus on the characters movement, not the ambience. The lighting in
this scene is again flat, and they lit the light brighter to the area where the characters are going to be.
Comparing it with the real casino, this casino is the brightest casino we have ever seen. Later, when
they decided to go back to their room, Chandler and Monica was holding hand, still disagreeing that
they should get married. Suddenly,

Inspector Li And Ah Jong
In John Woo's The Killer, Inspector Li and assassin Ah Jong form an intimate bond while navigating
Hong Kong and its colonial and criminal power structures (Tan 60). Both Li and Ah Jong struggle
within these organizations, and at the center of the intimacy between Li and Ah Jong is the
compassion and passion that Li witness in Ah Jong, despite his violent profession. Li has a sense of

Analysis of 'Raise the Red Lantern'
Yi–Mou Zhang 's Raise the Red Lantern, is a beautiful and brilliantly made film in its own right. If,
however, the team of Orson Welles and Greg Toland had produced the same film it would take on an
entirely different look and feel. The film would reflect Wells love for creating physical
representations of thematic metaphors and the long take and Toland 's brilliant use of deep space
photography and mobile framing. Under the direction of the Wells–Toland team, the film would take
on subtle, yet significant differences from the very beginning. In the opening scene, with Songolian

As the lanterns are being lit, the central chandelier above the bed would probably be shot from a
bird 's eye perspective as it was being lowered and then a floor shot as it was being raised. The
change in distance would make Songolian seem even smaller in the huge room, a tiny woman
surrounded buy countless, huge red lanterns signifying the family traditions. When the husband is
finally introduced into the film, the W–T team would shoot the husband as a faceless character, just
as Zhang had done. The technical difference, however would be that W–T, would use a
shot/reverse–shot sequence with the husband in order to better display the distance between himself
and Songolian. This would be a perfect opportunity for Toland 's mastery of the use of deep space.
Shooting close to the husband from below shoulder level toward Songolian would create a better
physical metaphor for the emotional distance between the two. Frequently in the film there are shots
of the inner court–areas of the houses of various wives, shown with the red lanterns burning against
the darkness of the night. Zhang, in his version, shoots these from a high angle and the camera is
fixed in the inner courtyard. W–T would shoot this as a tracking shot, moving from a high angle
shot of at least one of the dark inner courts and then pulling back to pan across the darkened
compound, then moving to another high angle shot of the court with the lit lanterns. There are

Theme Of Bravery In IM Not Scared
The film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and Niccolò Ammaniti's film I'm not Scared
explore the theme of bravery of their protagonists in their comparatively dissimilar settings. The
1997 Italian film Life is Beautiful follows the life of a charming man who uses his humor to win
over the woman of his dreams and bravely save his family from the tragedy in Italy during the
Second World War. Also set in the late 1970s in rural southern Italy, the film I'm not Scared
encompasses imprisonment and the developing friendship of Michele and Filippo who is kidnapped
for ransom. Filippo is chained up and hungry when Michelle discovers him in a pit near an
abandoned house and he helps the boy out. Bravery is prominently explored in both texts through
dialogue, colour, and setting.
Benigni and Ammaniti present bravery through the dialogue presented by the protagonists Guido
and Michele. The dialogue that Guido speaks reveals plenty about his personality and nature and
gives the audience a firm understanding of his character. The beginning of the film presents a lot of
humor and the audience is introduced to a fairytale like story. Guido constantly uses his wit and
comedic nature to impress his lover Dora, and often on their encounters he enthusiastically exclaims
"Buongiorno Princess!" By referring to Dora as a princess illustrates that Guido believes she is
perfect and seeing as he repeatedly says this phrase also conveys his ability to appear when least
expected. Despite the transition in the film to a completely different setting and situation, dialogue
plays a key role in communicating to the audience Guido's ability to lift the hopes and provide
ongoing love and sacrifice for those around him. When Guido and son Joshua are separated from
Dora at the concentration camp they shout "Buongiorno Princess!" into the microphone. A reaction
shot is then used to show Dora's familiarity with these words and her understanding that her
husband and son are alive. The use of this common greeting is effective in this film because it
conveys that despite the sudden change of lifestyle for Guido and his family, Guido's personality
ensures his humor and devotion are expressed until the very end of the film which shows

This smoothness effect lets the scene cuts seem more natural which keeps the viewer engaged to the
story. North by Northwest is a film where the location of the key characters often changes
frequently. It is therefore important to incorporate the technique of 'establishing shots' to ensure the
viewers know what is taking place in the scene. The film North by Northwest uses a wide range of
camera techniques throughout the film in order to create a feeling of suspense and danger. The
establishing shots, close ups, medium shots, and shot–reverse–shots all play an significant role in
conveying suspense to the audience, while also creating continuousness as well as adding a
believable element.
Hitchcock avoids the killing scene cliché by placing Roger Thornhill in the middle of nowhere
rather than a cliché, for example, placing him in a dark street, with only the light from the street
lamp, the killer then comes from behind, emerges from the darkness and kills him. Instead
Hitchcock places Roger Thornhill in the uncommon position to most suspense films, a crop field.
This creates questions from the viewers, what's going to happen

Harrison Bergeron And 2081 Comparison
The film 2081 directed by Chandler Tuttle is an adaptation of the short story 'Harrison Bergeron' by
Kurt Vonnegut Jr. which looks into a dystopian society where everyone is finally equal. Vonnegut
wanted to show us how absurd the world will become when everyone is equal and Tuttle has
conveyed that perfectly in his adaptation. The story is told from George Bergeron's perspective as he
watches his son Harrison perform his act of rebellion and his own requiem. Tuttle uses Harrison to

not something you can forget with just some noises. He could not tell Hazel what was sad on the

that are irrelevant or sad for us are common at the present time. When we tune into news either from

sometimes sadness is important to our way of life. As Vonnegut wants to convey how absurd true

This can be known as an establishing shot, which shows the viewers where the next few events or

viewer an idea of what kind of setting the following action will occur in. The next scene shows the
interior of the house, taking the audience on a tour by panning from room to room. In order to do
this steadily, a dolly is used so that the vertical movement is kept at a minimum, and the camera can
move horizontally instead. A dolly shot consists of a camera set up on a wheeled cart traveling on a
specific track to create smooth movements. In the film, the dolly shot prompts the audience to feel
as though they are inside the house as well, experiencing a slight dollhouse perception. As the dolly
moves throughout, it stops at several rooms showing the objects and the blocking of characters in

Country Music Video Analysis
When thinking of a country music video, what comes to mind? Most would think of an old dirt road,
beer, trucks, and girls. That's not what a country music video is about, it's about showing what the
song is trying to say, through a video. A music video shouldn't be about how good or bad the song
is; you shouldn't even hear the song when you watch the video. It should be about helping to tell and
show the story, the way the artist wants the viewer to see it. A great country music video consists of

Charlie Chaplin The Gold Rush , is a silent comedic film about going after the American dream and
the hardships one must endure while trying to survive against all odds. As usual Chaplin plays his
famous character , the tramp , a dim–witted under dog. He is a lone prospector who falls in love
with a dance hall girl. Chaplin effectively used mise–en–scene for cinematic communication in
server scenes in this film. In this film, viewers see hardship through the perspective of disillusion
and starved gold hunters that travel to Alaska in search of riches . Chaplin's effectively uses mise–

When the lights fade at the theatre , the title of the film shows up on the screen. The font uses bold
characters which are outlined or shadowed to create a 3–d effect. This can be compared how
Chaplin's character lived in his whole world that was sometimes fantasy. Editing techniques such as
credits texts fading in and out , and the color and umbre of text were constantly being used in this

"If you've seen one, you've seen them all," remarks Kathy Selden about movies after first meeting
silent film star Don Lockwood in the beginning of Singin' in the Rain (Singin' in the Rain 17:38).
While Kathy was slightly off base when saying that all movies are the same, movies belonging to
the same genre often do share certain conventions which author Bernard F. Dick discusses in his

Movie Classics Company. What do one of the best musicals ever made and the newest musical to

In Singin' in the Rain, one of the best examples of the plot motivating a song or dance happens a
little over halfway through the movie. Don, Kathy, and Cosmo have just returned from the test
premiere of Don's newest movie and first talkie. The audience hated the movie, and Don now feels
like his career is over. While Kathy and Cosmo try to cheer him up, they come up with the idea of
turning his movie into a musical. As they celebrate this new idea, they realize it is past midnight
which brings about "Good Morning." 1:01:00 This number gives the characters a physical and
verbal way of showing their glee concerning the idea of turning the movie into a musical. When
speaking specifically about Singin' in the Rain, Dick says, "The other musical numbers in the film
also advance the plot and are not merely occasions for an actor to break into a song or dance" (Dick
123). "Good Morning," like the other numbers in Singin' in the Rain, advances continues to drive
the plot. Likewise, in La La Land as Dom walks Mia to find her car after they meet at a party, Dom
begins singing about what a lovely night it is which evolves into a full on song and dance. 33:20

Essay Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the
target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience
expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and see
it. The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an array of
clips that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a 'cliff–hanger'. This is a term
used to explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them wonder in

I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre.
The film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens
image is of the 'universal' logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was
made. The following image is of the 'DreamWorks' logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with a
credible reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of the
opening image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a
heavy drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle.
The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words 'THE GENERAL' is then shown in bold whit
capital letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually fade
into the background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now accompany the
drums. This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates this with war and
battle. This next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up high. He is walking
through lines of soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we assume he is the general.
The general has a stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident. The lighting is bright but

Laid In America Film Analysis
Movies have a lot of work put into them in which us the audience tend to not really pay attention to.
In the movie Laid in America (2016) directed by Peter Vass uses editing, Cinematography, and
sound to grab its audience so that they can enjoy the film. These elements in film are combined to
portray two of the characters Olajide Olatunji's character (Duncan) and Casper Lee's character
(Jack) in which their dilemma starts off by them coming to America as foreign exchange students in
which their ultimate goal would be for them to get laid before they return back to the U.K. While
this is there mission they run into a bit of trouble when they use an app to get girls and find
themselves getting kidnapped for faking that they have money in order ... Show more content on

Even the little things that people tend to ignore can make the major difference in a film. Editing
which combines all the shots together in which it takes various cuts to get to the final product, then
cinematography which gives us the views of the moving images in the film whether it being
characters or any important point of view that they are trying to show. Lastly sound which helps the
film feel more real and grab its audience with background music if they have any, to follow it would
also show its mood to introduce the characters or set the pace of the film or perhaps link scenes and
set the time and place. All of these elements weren't as in depth in the past as they are now, which
indeed has transformed the way we see movies

Do The Right Thing Is A Beautifully Intense Film Directed...
Do the Right Thing is a beautifully intense film directed by the talented Spike Lee, which revolves
around the very diverse community of the Bedford–Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn on a hot summer
Sunday. Throughout the entire film, characters are faced with obstacles and injustices that bring up
the grand question of what the "right thing" even is. One scene in particular sums up the whole
premise of the film into a concise and poetic speech spoken by the one and only Radio Raheem.
This scene is imperative to have in the film as well as for the viewers. Without this scene, the film
itself would not have the same impact and possibly the same message it has already given all of its
spectators. Radio Raheem is definitely an interesting character to say the least, just like many of the
characters in this film; they individually embody an aspect of the microcosm they reside in. Some
characters can be as apparent as "Buggin' Out". Not only is his name a term for losing control, but
the character himself seems to cause trouble whenever he see's a social injustice [no matter right or
wrong on the subject]. Some can be more intricate like working man Mookie who lazes away day
by day just waiting for his money at the end of it all. Although he is a man of the streets, a man that
viewers like myself have grown fond of towards the films progression, Mookie is still a working–
class man in this society, nothing more, and nothing less. As for Radio Raheem, he is a walking
contradiction

Film Analysis : ' The Film '
Spatial Horror
A movie is a series of images shown very rapidly one after another. Each frame is just a flat two–
dimensional image, yet with certain formal elements directors can create a sense of a three–
dimensional space. Some techniques utilized by filmmakers are the same as those painters' use;
things such as lighting, color, contrast, and shadows. Yet when the painting starts to move a whole
new world of spatial elements open up, giving a filmmaker many ways to bring a two–dimensional
image to life. The space created by such elements can be used to make the audience feel a certain
way about a scene or movie as a whole. In the Swedish horror film Let the Right One In there are
three scenes in which the vampire Eli murders people. The director Tomas Alfredson uses space
differently in each of these scenes, evoking different emotions in the audience each time and
escalating the horror sequentially as the film progresses. In the first, the audience is shown
everything; Alfredson uses a single take and a motionless camera in a wide angle to show the entire
attack. Secondly, the audience is taken around a small dimly lit house and is subjected to a jump
scare when Eli attacks her victim (I will be referring to Eli as "her" despite the fact that her gender is
left ambiguous). In the final murder scene, almost the entirety of the horror is done in an off–screen
space. In Let the Right One In the use of varying camera angles, sounds, lighting, and editing
establish space in each

Planet Of The Apes Themes

  • 1. Planet Of The Apes Themes War for the Planet of the Apes is the third installment in the reboot series of the iconic franchise. The first entry in the trilogy, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was a surprisingly good film that managed to be more than just standard blockbuster fare, but it wasn't until its sequel, 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, that the franchise upped the ante by introducing extremely thought– provoking themes and an emotionally heavy plot. War manages to build even more upon the tone and themes introduced in the previous entries and musters up a film truly worthy of the praise that it is sure to receive. Directed by Matt Reeves, the film follows the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes after the U.S. military was called to fight a tribe of genetically advanced apes lead by Caesar (Andy Serkis). Through a series of events, Caesar gives up his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At times, the film feels like a Shakespearian tragedy, at other times it alludes to Moses and Christ, and there are even some aspects that can be interpreted as being referential to recent political events. Morality is a featured theme throughout the film, and with that comes many thoughts that may leave the audience pondering their own sense of ethics. Of course, the audience will only get what they allow themselves to take away from the film, but it's easy to say that there is plenty of material to dwell on after the credits roll. It's not very often that a film trilogy is consistently good, and it's even more rare for the sequels to continuously improve upon the predecessors. Planet of the Apes has proven that it is quite capable of accomplishing this feat. With excellent directing, writing, and an incomparable performance from Andy Serkis, War for the Planet of the Apes manages to bring a powerfully emotional and utterly fantastic conclusion to one of the most extraordinary trilogies of the new ... • 2. Analysis Of Alfred Hitchcock's Film 'Shadow Of A Doubt' Alfred Hitchcock's film "Shadow of a Doubt" is a psychological thriller in which a girl and her uncle share many things: the name Charlie, their family, and a telepathic connection. When Charlie Newton's uncle comes into town, she immediately recognizes that Charlie Oakley, her uncle, is hiding something. Unfortunately, her telepathic connection did not tell her that his secret was he being the "Merry Widow Murderer." As Newton comes closer and closer to the truth, she also comes closer and closer to deadly accidents. This particular scene demonstrates the friction between the two Charlies as Newton is about to tell Oakley that the police have the means to identify him. Shot 1 is a close up of Charlie Newton's grave face as she sees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is revealed that he was about to be apprehended when he ran into the propeller of an airplane. This gruesome death meant that he was identified by his clothes–all initialed "C.O'H." Both men agree that the case is closed for good as they walk off. Newton and Oakley remain on screen as they stare at Mr. Newton and Herbie. Shot 7 is a close–up of Newton who has a bewildered look on her face as she turns her head towards Oakley. Shot 8 is a close–up of Oakley who looks absolutely smug and delighted at this new development. He declares himself hungry and turns towards the door to let himself in. The shot becomes a medium shot as he practically skips up the stairs in joy before stopping at the top and turning around looking like he forgot something. Shot 9 is a Point–of–View shot that demonstrates the view of Oakley at the top of the stairs, looking down at Newton who in standing in the middle of the doorway staring at him expectantly. Shot 10 once again goes back to a medium shot of Oakley who slowly turns around and continues on as the screen fades out. Shot 11 begins as a fade in of Oakley walking towards that camera as suspenseful music plays. He then quickly walks away pacing until he comes to the window. Shot 12 is a Point–of–View of Oakley looking out the window. It shows Newton walking on the sidewalk of the house. • 3. Symbolism In The Whale Rider Identify an important character in the film. Explain why the character is important and discuss what techniques the director uses to portray the character and the effect on the audience? By Tishya Kapoor In the film, The Whale Rider, by Nicki Caro, is about a young girl named Paikea Apirana (Pai) who is destined to become a leader and lead the community. However Koro, Pai's grandfather expects a male leader to lead the community as he expects Maori tradition and culture to carry on. Koro refuses Pai from inheriting that leadership as she is a female. An important character in this film is Koro as he expects he is the current leader of the Maori community. But now that he is getting old, he needs to find individuals who have those leadership attributes in order to be a successful leader. However, he will not be able to pass on the legacy and heritage as he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, when Koro expects one of the boys to retrieve his whale tooth underwater. However the boys have failed to retrieve it and Koro is disappointed as the whale tooth was a symbol of his leadership and power. There is a close up of the whale tooth slowly drifting away in the murky waters. Also when Koro has discovered the beached whales, he drops his stick. This is significant as this is also a symbol of his leadership and power. It then shows a close up of the stick and the stick being washed away. In conclusion, the film The Whale Rider has left a strong impression on me as I have understood the character more in depth and how the character is important in this film through a variety of effective film techniques. I have gained a lot of understanding through the director's messages and ways of communicating through a variety of film shots, symbolism and sound effects. The director has used effective film techniques in order for the audience to engage with the film and to get a better and in depth understanding of each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Effectiveness Of Vertigo In Hitchcock's 'Citizen Kane' In 2012, Vertigo replaced "Citizen Kane" as best movie ever made in the Sight and Sound poll. Film producer Marco Müller describes the genius of Vertigo by saying "Paranoia and obsession have never looked better". The technical aspects mirror the narrative, and the experience of the audience mirrors the experience of the main character. Scotty Ferguson faces a fear of heights, which causes him to have vertigo. Hitchcock weaves this theme of disorientation through the movie by supporting it with narrative, production design, and skilled camera techniques. Production design is important because it carries out the theme in a visual sense. Setting supports the story by giving us context. The setting is a statement whether it's American City or explicitly named, the setting can set a specific tone, sometimes having such a large impact that it is credited as a character in the story. When we see Midge and Scotty in her cluttered apartment, and through the window we see the San Francisco skyline, it's beautiful and dizzying. San Francisco is significant because it is a city of heights, the very thing that tortures Scotty throughout the film. The audience watches from Scottie's point of view as he drives up steep roads, feeling a sense of caution on Scotty's behalf. Hitchcock uses iconography to establish setting by having major events of the story take place in places synonymous with San Francisco. He saves Madeline right in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, Madeline feels possessed by Carlotta in front of Scotty in Muir Woods and then eventually kills herself at Mission San Juan Bautista. Another aspect of production design is costume, which plays a large role in Vertigo. The first time we meet Madeline (at a San Francisco institution, Ernie's) she is the most vibrant thing in the room, her green sash clashes with the red walls of the room. As they prepare to leave the restaurant, Madeline steps into the light, and everything else around her fades. We see a perfect profile with her at the center, this is important because it's Scotty's very first impression of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Workings of Cinematrography Depth of field is an element in cinematography that means a range of distance between objects and how they are being shot in sharp focus. Depth controls the perspective relations by depicting what planes will be in focus. There is also a director's decision to choose a selective view. It is used to focus on only one plane and the others being blurred. Selective focusing automatically makes us pay attention to one area equally visibly but not all being in sharp view. It also examines deep focus and racking focus. Deep focus is a tight shot of an object; it's a shorter lens and offers better lighting to be focused on. Attention is on several areas all being visible. Racking focus also known as "pulling focus". The point of this focus is to transfers the attention from the foreground and the background. It overall makes one action blurred and another in a sharp focus. In the film Hurt Locker depth of field is very present. The clip I chose to give the example is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dtQqy1jDUo "We are on the same team". When American soldiers venture into the desert and come upon unidentified civilians in an SUV. Startled to see they were dressed in head rags and carrying guns, they drove closer to examine what was going on. The depth of field is present due to the camera angles of the action of the military tank moving, the reaction of the civilians, and the soldiers approaching them. As the camera directs the attention out of the wind shield, it seems to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Opportunities and Limitations in Using a Single Camera In the early days of film making the director would not have the choice of using the multi–camera setups and editing suites that we have today. He or she would have just one camera to shoot all the shots needed and then when it came to the editing process, all the shots would need to be selected, the different frames sliced apart, and spliced back together in the desired order. As you can imagine this was a time consuming process, and although this appeared to be a big limitation on some television genre's at the time such as sit–com and live broadcasts, it allowed the film industry to flourish. The use of the single camera drew the director into a more creative role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a great time saving device, allowing more of the action to be packed into the show, but also offers great creative ideas, especially for mystery and crime films where suspense can be created by not knowing what's lurking around the next corner. Casting for a film is very important, as you need the right people to act the roles that the director has in his head, but a good actor also needs to be quite patient concentrated and rehearsed, for shots have to be repeated many times. One of the problems of multi–camera techniques is that it's not portable. You can not enter peoples' homes and setup a full 6 or seven camera studio, its just not practical or cost effective. This is certainly not a problem of single camera techniques, allowing much increased accessibility, but with it comes an increased responsibility towards the law, both in assuring the health and safety of the crew and any member of public whose facilities are being used for the shoot, and any legal issues that need to be cleared up in pre–production. A full risk assessment of all considered sets to ensure that the proper facilities are present and the lives of any crew member is not at risk, i.e. there must be a fire extinguisher and a first aid box, any gas fires need to have been certified within the last 12 months, etc. One ... Who Framed Roger Rabbit Although the opening scene of Who Framed Roger Rabbit is meant to be lighthearted and appealing to children, upon further examination the discriminatory treatment of Roger reveals the racist undertones. The scene begins in the cartoon universe with Roger Rabbit and a cartoon baby, named Baby Herman, that Roger is left as the caretaker. Throughout the scene the baby undermines his authority in almost every way as he tries to reach a cookie jar on top of the refrigerator. The refrigerator, however falls on Roger, and he then produces birds instead of stars. The director then calls cut and the camera shifts to the live–action characters who are shooting the scene and are very angry with Roger. Baby Herman is meant to represent the human character in cartoon form, since in fact he is a cartoon–human baby. The minority Roger is being characterized as lower than Herman to depict his inferiority to the human representation Herman who undermines Roger so easily, despite being a baby. Finally, examined were the camera angles and actions of the characters throughout the scene. While Roger is pleading for the director to give him another chance, the camera is positioned at the human height level while they move throughout the scene. It was directed by George Lucas and originally released in only a few cinemas in 1977. However, the buzz around the film grew, and it is now one of the highest grossing films of all time, and along with its sequels, prequels and re–mastered re–releases, has a large cult following. I feel this is because of Lucas` ability to engage the audience through careful use of sound and camera technique; The use of the scrolling story in space sets up many audience expectations, that the action will be set in space, and that it will base around a struggle between the rebels and the Empire. Walter White Character Analysis In the famous television show 'Breaking Bad' the audience will see the main character, Walter White's, evolve from a tedious, monotonous and weak–minded high school teacher who has to have two jobs just to get by to a wild, bold, strong–minded methamphetamine manufacture. The event causing up to Walter's strong character development was the discovery of Walter's illness. Film techniques such as lighting, camera angles, hued colours and sound effects have been utilised to convey the strong identity development of Walter. At the beginning of the Pilot episode, Walter White is displayed as a very ordinary, typically, mundane man who clearly views his life as boring, predictable and has little or no power at work or home. This is shown through the camera angles, lighting, hue colours, sound effects and editing as they display how repetitive and uninterested he feels about his life. This is evident in one of the first scenes, where Walter is on a stair stepper working out. The director creatively used the dull, balm sound of the stair stepper to secretly communicate to the viewers the repetitiveness of Walters life as the diegetic sound effect is repeated over and over. Suddenly the scene cuts to Walter eating breakfast with his family adding to the thought that he has a very ordinary mundane life. Though the lighting is much brighter than the previous scene, there is still a blue hue which represents how unhappy he feels about his life as if his facial expression weren't evident enough; especially when Skyler (his wife) and Walter Jr. (his son) were fighting which appeared to be a recurring argument shown by through both characters exaggerating the word 'again'. Through this scene, Walters wife is clearly in charge, shown through the slightly high camera angle used on Walter when his wife tells him to tell their son to eat his veggie bacon thus adding to Walters frail identity. • 13. The Film Blood Diamond By Edward Zwick In the film Blood Diamond, the director Edward Zwick uses the opening and closing scenes to show the socio–political effects of western consumerism in an underdeveloped society, in particular the Conflict Diamond trade and its effects, he uses this to highlight the idea of the 'boy being the diamond' within the film. Consumerism is seen to be the cause of death and destruction in the once beautiful landscape of Africa with portrait shots of mountains and beautiful sunsets. In both scenes the director uses camera shots, sounds and overall mis–en–scene/editing to create these themes/ideas. The socio–political thriller brings chaos and brutality to the forefront of what is a little known conflict trade. While the movie is full with dynamic characters the real "star" that is brought to light is the diamond, of which many audience members could be adorned in, making the realistic side of the film more obvious. The movie aims in this way to leave to audience with the question "Is there Blood on my hands?" In the first scene Zwick uses camera angles and dialogue/sound to emotionally grab the viewers and to shock/intrigue them. Its use of editing, sound, music, as well as varying camera positions provide information as well as a poetic meaning that goes beyond what can be experienced from a photograph (Kawin, 1982, 15). The use of dissolves and quick cuts is one obvious tool. In the final scene of La Jetée, when the people of the future transport the hero/narrator back to the jetty to meet his beloved, a transition from an image of the hero's face is dissolved into an image of him in a crowd on the jetty in the past. The transition of the sound and music are also involved. As the one image dissolves into the other, the music of the future are dissolved away into the sounds of a clock tower and planes. From this simple use of visual and audio edits, viewers are provided information which define and clarify the progression of the story (Kawin, 1984–1985, 42). Specifically, it emphasizes the change in location and time. As the scene progresses, the hero begins to run toward the woman. Many scenes in the movie are understood, not just through the script, but from the cinematography as well. Three scenes in particular catch my eye. It is the artistic style and flare of conveying the same idea in multiple mediums. The first scene is when Terry and Edie are on the rooftop at Joey's pigeon coup. This scene portrays the moment in which I believe was the catalyst for Terry that lead him to be truthful to Evie and stand up to Friendly. The second scene that I will speak about is when "Kayo" Dugan is killed. When the preacher is giving his speech to all the longshoremen. That speech was a testament of one man speaking out for what he knew was right. The third scene that I will choose for this essay is where Terry walks to Friendly's dock office. After the fight, Terry's march to work puts you on the edge of your seat. Each scene has depth that few movies achieve. The first scene is the rooftop scene with Terry and Evie. The whole scene is shot with natural light. Kaufman begins the scene with a long shot of the rooftop. Terry is waving a long stick with a rag at the top of it to call back the pigeons to the coup. When the husband is finally introduced into the film, the W–T team would shoot the husband as a faceless character, just as Zhang had done. The technical difference, however would be that W–T, would use a shot/reverse–shot sequence with the husband in order to better display the distance between himself and Songolian. This would be a perfect opportunity for Toland 's mastery of the use of deep space. Shooting close to the husband from below shoulder level toward Songolian would create a better physical metaphor for the emotional distance between the two. Zhang, in his version, shoots these from a high angle and the camera is fixed in the inner courtyard. • 25. Theme Of Bravery In IM Not Scared The film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni and Niccolò Ammaniti's film I'm not Scared explore the theme of bravery of their protagonists in their comparatively dissimilar settings. The 1997 Italian film Life is Beautiful follows the life of a charming man who uses his humor to win over the woman of his dreams and bravely save his family from the tragedy in Italy during the Second World War. Also set in the late 1970s in rural southern Italy, the film I'm not Scared encompasses imprisonment and the developing friendship of Michele and Filippo who is kidnapped for ransom. Filippo is chained up and hungry when Michelle discovers him in a pit near an abandoned house and he helps the boy out. Bravery is prominently explored in both texts through dialogue, colour, and setting. Benigni and Ammaniti present bravery through the dialogue presented by the protagonists Guido and Michele. The dialogue that Guido speaks reveals plenty about his personality and nature and gives the audience a firm understanding of his character. The beginning of the film presents a lot of humor and the audience is introduced to a fairytale like story. Guido constantly uses his wit and comedic nature to impress his lover Dora, and often on their encounters he enthusiastically exclaims "Buongiorno Princess!" By referring to Dora as a princess illustrates that Guido believes she is perfect and seeing as he repeatedly says this phrase also conveys his ability to appear when least expected. Despite the transition in the film to a completely different setting and situation, dialogue plays a key role in communicating to the audience Guido's ability to lift the hopes and provide ongoing love and sacrifice for those around him. When Guido and son Joshua are separated from Dora at the concentration camp they shout "Buongiorno Princess!" into the microphone. A reaction shot is then used to show Dora's familiarity with these words and her understanding that her husband and son are alive. The use of this common greeting is effective in this film because it conveys that despite the sudden change of lifestyle for Guido and his family, Guido's personality ensures his humor and devotion are expressed until the very end of the film which shows ... This smoothness effect lets the scene cuts seem more natural which keeps the viewer engaged to the story. The film North by Northwest uses a wide range of camera techniques throughout the film in order to create a feeling of suspense and danger. The establishing shots, close ups, medium shots, and shot–reverse–shots all play an significant role in conveying suspense to the audience, while also creating continuousness as well as adding a believable element. Hitchcock avoids the killing scene cliché by placing Roger Thornhill in the middle of nowhere rather than a cliché, for example, placing him in a dark street, with only the light from the street lamp, the killer then comes from behind, emerges from the darkness and kills him. Instead Hitchcock places Roger Thornhill in the uncommon position to most suspense films, a crop field. This creates questions from the viewers, what's going to happen ... Harrison Bergeron And 2081 Comparison The film 2081 directed by Chandler Tuttle is an adaptation of the short story 'Harrison Bergeron' by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. which looks into a dystopian society where everyone is finally equal. Vonnegut wanted to show us how absurd the world will become when everyone is equal and Tuttle has conveyed that perfectly in his adaptation. The story is told from George Bergeron's perspective as he watches his son Harrison perform his act of rebellion and his own requiem. He could not tell Hazel what was sad on the television and got on with his life to get another beer. This idea of our propensity to forget things that are irrelevant or sad for us are common at the present time. When we tune into news either from television or other media platforms, we are presented to the crisis around the world and how horrible they are but the day after you wouldn't even remember half of the crisis around the world nor thought of how relevant it is to you. Media is designed to tell the public what to think about the current issues around the world. They can give us the full story or hide some facts from us to persuade us to the way they want the mass to think about their stories. As much as the irrelevant news that people forget in between commercials, people usually forgot someone who passed away after a while and carry on with their life. It is in human nature that we want only happiness but sometimes sadness is important to our way of life. The next scene shows the interior of the house, taking the audience on a tour by panning from room to room. In order to do this steadily, a dolly is used so that the vertical movement is kept at a minimum, and the camera can move horizontally instead. A dolly shot consists of a camera set up on a wheeled cart traveling on a specific track to create smooth movements. In the film, the dolly shot prompts the audience to feel as though they are inside the house as well, experiencing a slight dollhouse perception. As the dolly moves throughout, it stops at several rooms showing the objects and the blocking of characters in them. While Kathy and Cosmo try to cheer him up, they come up with the idea of turning his movie into a musical. As they celebrate this new idea, they realize it is past midnight which brings about "Good Morning." 1:01:00 This number gives the characters a physical and verbal way of showing their glee concerning the idea of turning the movie into a musical. When speaking specifically about Singin' in the Rain, Dick says, "The other musical numbers in the film also advance the plot and are not merely occasions for an actor to break into a song or dance" (Dick 123). "Good Morning," like the other numbers in Singin' in the Rain, advances continues to drive the plot. Likewise, in La La Land as Dom walks Mia to find her car after they meet at a party, Dom begins singing about what a lovely night it is which evolves into a full on song and dance. 33:20 The dance comes to a close as the pair comes face to face, and Mia's cellphone ringing breaks the moment. Do the Right Thing is a beautifully intense film directed by the talented Spike Lee, which revolves around the very diverse community of the Bedford–Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn on a hot summer Sunday. Throughout the entire film, characters are faced with obstacles and injustices that bring up the grand question of what the "right thing" even is. One scene in particular sums up the whole premise of the film into a concise and poetic speech spoken by the one and only Radio Raheem. This scene is imperative to have in the film as well as for the viewers. Without this scene, the film itself would not have the same impact and possibly the same message it has already given all of its spectators. • 39. Film Analysis : ' The Film ' Spatial Horror A movie is a series of images shown very rapidly one after another. Each frame is just a flat two– dimensional image, yet with certain formal elements directors can create a sense of a three– dimensional space. Some techniques utilized by filmmakers are the same as those painters' use; things such as lighting, color, contrast, and shadows. Yet when the painting starts to move a whole new world of spatial elements open up, giving a filmmaker many ways to bring a two–dimensional image to life. The space created by such elements can be used to make the audience feel a certain way about a scene or movie as a whole. In the Swedish horror film Let the Right One In there are three scenes in which the vampire Eli murders people. The director Tomas Alfredson uses space differently in each of these scenes, evoking different emotions in the audience each time and escalating the horror sequentially as the film progresses. In the first, the audience is shown everything; Alfredson uses a single take and a motionless camera in a wide angle to show the entire attack. Secondly, the audience is taken around a small dimly lit house and is subjected to a jump scare when Eli attacks her victim (I will be referring to Eli as "her" despite the fact that her gender is left ambiguous).
