before the 13th century (CFCRAT). Before the 13th century, the Hindu Culture had not split their
music into types. But their culture soon pushed to two types of classical music after the 13th
century. This was because of the Islamic takeover of northern portions of the subcontinent that
introduced Arab and Persian music (Nettl). The two types of classical Indian music that were created
were the Hindustani and the Carnatic (CFCRAT).
During the 13th century of India, composer, Śārngadeva wrote the Sangītaratnākara which is
proclaimed to be the most influential piece in Indian Classical Music (Śārṅgadeva). Within this
book, Śārngadeva explains both types of Indian music, the Hindustani and the Carnatic. It is
believed that this book had major impacts on many musicians of the 13th century and changed
Hindustani Classical Music as a whole (Śārṅgadeva).
Hindustani music is made up of ragas, which are a form of Hindu music that has melodic form, and
rhythm. The music is also comprised of improvisation and parts of tala rhythmic structures (Nettl).

an art form that is open to creativity.
As well as being an art form, experimental music uses a variety of instruments and sound–producing
items. In the last hundred years, many composers and music artists experimented with other noises
and sources of sound. Composers such as Luigi Russolo and George Antheil used sirens, whistles,
anvils, and machines to create sounds in their musical works (Ewen 95). In the 1930s through
1950s, some composers began to experiment with new types of sounds in music. The composer
Edgard Varese felt that "music had to be freed of all the inhibitions that centuries of tradition and
rules had imposed upon it (102)." Personally created instruments are also used in experimental
music. One of the composers who devised his own musical scale and instruments was Harry Partch
