How Did Christopher Columbus Vision Dbq
Columbus' vision to reach Asia by sailing west was rejected a number of times by the King of Portugal, James II – and at first was equally rejected by
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. These rejections were decisions derived from recommendations made by royal "scientific" committees.
Each of these committees deemed that Columbus had grossly underestimated the distance and time in voyaging west to reach the Asian continent. It
was Ferdinand who recalled Columbus to the royal court of Spain, and upon "political" reconsideration with his wife Queen Isabella – the Royals
eventually agreed to finance the exploration dream of Christopher Columbus (Kreis).
Proving the committees correct, and nearing dangerously low levels of remaining supplies; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The natives had no basis to recognize the extreme value of these items to Columbus and his men – nor how far these "visitors" would go to gain/take
such "things" (Halstall). Columbus immediately noticed the natives had no real weapons, and remarked that he and fifty of his men could easily
conquer these obviously friendly and peaceful people. Communication was mostly by sign, but intrinsically was achieved because the natives did not
perceive any threat to their wellbeing (Primary Doc. 1).
While the excerpts of the Journal are mostly attributed to Columbus himself, little of the Admiral's personal logs still exist. In fact, most of the
"excerpts" existing today are reconstructions utilizing later quotations – as well as letters and reports to/from: King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella;
trusted officials; family; and fellow voyagers. Columbus' brother Bartholomew; Columbus' sons Hernando and Ferdinand; Andres Bernaldez (a friend);
and Bartolome de las Casas (a Catholic Bishop and historiographer of Columbus) have all been recognized as contributing to the "reconstructions" of

Christopher Columbus Seeking a Royal Sponsorship
"Christopher Columbus Seeking a Royal Sponsorship" Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in fourteen fifty one. His father was a
merchant that traded wine and other things, and there is where Christopher Columbus worked. They were considered to be the lower middle class
back in this time. This town was almost surrounded entirely by sea, and there were a lot of sailors. Christopher Columbus grew tired of working on
land and became fascinated by the ocean and sailing, so when he became a teenager he got a job working on a merchant ship. Were he stayed out at
sea until fourteen seventy, when pirates attacked the ship he was working on. Christopher Columbus managed to escape on an ore, and floated for days
until he reached the Portuguese coast. Portugal was the leader of ocean navigation during this time and this was a perfect place for Columbus. In this
biography I plan on talking about how Christopher Columbus planned on seeking a royal sponsorship on his outrageous plan to discover a new route
to China, but instead he stumbles upon a new world. Now Christopher Columbus is starting to contemplate this idea that the world is twenty percent
smaller than what it really was. But this proved to become untrue, and if he would had knew this he probably wouldn't have took the chance in sailing
in this uncharted ocean. There was to believe that the ocean to the west was consumed with sea monsters and unknown horrors. So after reading letters
of Marco Polo, he came to

TomГЎs De Torquemada
TomГЎs de Torquemada (tour– k – mah – da) was appointed as Grand Inquisitor through Pope Sixtus IV in 1482 (Biography.com, 2018). Torquemada
was responsible for thousands of innocent deaths. Known as the Black Legend, he spread fear throughout Spain, and eventually throughout all of the
Spanish colonies. Thousands of innocent people were arrested, interrogated, mercilessly tortured and many were killed. The Spanish Inquisition was
established 1478 by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Castile to control the people of Spain and consolidate Catholicism as the only allowable
religion of Spain. This was accomplished by forcibly converting Jews and Muslims (The Moors) to Christianity through torture, threat of death and
confiscation of property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Church and the King wanted to eliminate all other religions and reduce autonomy of the many regions. Many scholars feel that the Holy Office
of the Spanish Inquisition was a precursor of secret police. As an ancestor to the Star of David, used by the Nazis to mark Jews, the Inquisition had
several tunics of different styles prisoners had to wear to indicate their sentence of heresy. The Sambenito tunic was marked to indicate if the prisoner
was going to be burned alive at the stake, killed before being burned or committed to do penance. (Thenagain.info, 2014) In Ferdinand and Isabella's
efforts to convert or expel the Muslim population in Southern Spain, they conducted a ten–year campaign against the Emirate of Granada. The Treaty
of Granada took place November 25, 1491 between King Ferdinand and Isabella and the Emirate of Granada (Islamic Nation on Iberian Peninsula).
The treaty agreed that fair treatment and broadmindedness of the Moors (Muslims) would be accepted in trade for their submission. The Moors had to
convert to Catholicism or be banished or killed. The treaty ended after an uprising of the Moors in the 1500's, which caused King Ferdinand to end the
treaty after he thought they broke

Differences Between France And Spain
Spain focused was on converting the peoples in their Latin American empire to Christianity. This is because of Queen Isabella's commitment to her
catholic faith. While others worried about the potential riches of the new world, Isabella concerned herself about the Indians. This resulted in an early
perception by the Catholic Church, and the establishment of missions in all of Spain's territories. The church brought with it culture such as music,
literature, and academics. The French did not focus on trying to change people to Christianity. The French focus was to export there culture, along with
the food and the language. Then, the French dealt with their colonial subjects differently than Spain and England did. They did their best to make

Colonization of the New World
The discovery and colonization of the "New World" was one of the most significant and influential events in the known history of mankind. It has
shaped our present by changing the course of our past and is a time of such great significance that it would be all but impossible to understand today
without at least some comprehension of the why 's of yesterday. What was it that drove such a myriad of people to risk so much to tame the wild and

According to Howard Zinn it was for the Gold. Zinn claims that it was money and power that were driving forces behind Columbus. He tells us that
Spain promised him a 10% cut of all the gold found, governorship of any new found lands, and the new title of Admiral.[2] Gold and the regulation
thereof are the primary focuses of Columbus ' letter to the King and Queen of Spain, thought to have been written around the year 1492, but
definitely written after the his initial discovery.[3] So whether wholly or in part it appears that riches and power were factors contributing to
Columbus ' decision to risk so much. After all he made multiple trips across the Atlantic not just one. So apparently he was concerned with more than
just the discovery of a trade route. Columbus ' discovery was made possible by the Spanish Crown therefore all new found lands were claimed in the
name of Spain and a Spanish flag planted on the soil thereof in testament to this fact. Spain was still a catholic nation at this time and the Spanish
monarchy still acknowledged the Pope as the dominant spiritual authority on the Earth. However it would not be long after Columbus ' discovery that
all of Europe would be shaken to its very foundation and set ablaze in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. This revolution in spiritual thought

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Foreign Parties
"Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationship Between Foreign Parties"
"The Lord purposed that there should be something clearly miraculous in this matter of the voyage to the Indies . . . I spent seven years here in your
royal court discussing this subject with the leading persons in all learned arts, and their conclusion was that it was vain.... But afterwards it all turned
out just as our redeemer Jesus Christ has said, and as he had spoken earlier by the mouth of his holy prophets."–Christopher Columbus.
Christopher Columbus was born in Italy and eventually moved to spain. He has participated in several expeditions to Africa, which gained him
valuable knowledge of the Atlantic ocean. 1485. Columbus is taking a passage to Palos, Spain looking for a sponsor for his voyage to the Indies. He
proposed this same voyage to the Portuguese king, Genoa, and lastly Venice, which all three rejected his idea of a three–ship voyage. He was now on
his way to Spain to talk to Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon. Yet again, Colombus was rejected due to the fact they were
focused on a was with the Muslim, but was never forgot about Columbus and his voyage.
Columbus continued to seek influence on his voyage, and finally the Spanish captured the last Muslim on January 1492. Shortly after, Queen
Isabella and King Ferdinand agreed to pay for his expedition. He exclaimed once getting his voyage accepted , "I spent seven years here in your
royal court discussing this subject with the leading persons in all the learned arts, and their conclusion was that all was in vain. That was the end,
and they gave it up. But afterwards it all turned out just as our redeemer Jesus Christ had said, and as he had spoken earlier by the mouth of his holy
prophets" Why would a Spanish monarchy pay for an Italian man to travel across the world? Well the three main reasons are: belief for a shorter route
for Asia, profit, and the spread of Christianity.
They thought if they could find a shorter route to Asia they can control that water route making money from ports and gaining control of that route to
take advantage of other countries. This new trade route would make Spain one of the richest countries at this time. The

Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus, in many eyes, created a path for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His excellent navigation skills set a
precedent for other explorers. He is renowned for four voyages across the Atlantic from Spain. He is most known for "discovering" the Americas
when he was instead looking for a more efficient route from Europe to Asia. Columbus opened the way for conquest and colonization. Although
Columbus was Italian, the navigator and survivalist was hired and sponsored by the Spanish monarchs in 1492 to explore and find a new route to
Asia. There are speculations as to why Spain would hire a foreign explorer, but there are many simple explanations as to why. Therefore, this paper
will give in–depth explanations and justifications of the reasons why the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, sponsored the
expeditions led by Christopher Columbus, an Italian. In 1469, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand Aragon united in marriage. When they got married,
they ruled two separate kingdoms. However, during their marriage, they decided that they would rule their kingdoms together as one. This made them
rulers of most of Spain. Before 1492, Spain did not have much success. The only territory in their possession outside of Europe was the Canary
Islands. Spain desperately needed success and control. The kingdom wanted to be a higher power in Europe. They set many goals to achieve power,
including making Catholicism the predominant religion in

Spanish Empire Research Paper
Overall Introduction The Spanish Empire began with the union of Aragon and Castile to create the unified territory of Spain. The exile of the moors
created an attitude towards religious dominion. This need to go out and convert other people led to the Age of Exploration in which Spain discovered
many new lands and converted millions of natives. This period also created the most prosperous economy for Spain but would later be detrimental to
the empire. New findings of gold and silver flooded the economy which caused economic problems to coincide with other major factors that caused
the empire to fall. The Spanish Empire has been one of the largest empires in history and influenced many parts of the world.

After Alfonso's death Isabella was not sure if she would be able to rule Spain as a woman. Many people doubted and even her herself doubted.
Enrique and Alfonso were planning on arranging a marriage for Isabella eventually, but Isabella had her interest somewhere else. Living as a woman,
Isabella wanted equality and equity for women. In the book it says, "Issues that affected women were always of particular interest to Isabella, and
gender relations also colored the perceptions of people living in Spain. All three great faiths––Judaism, Christianity, and Islam––honored women in
certain ways but were also patriarchal and made women second–class citizens in other significant ways." (p 22) When there was a possibility for
Isabella to become queen she wanted to truly impact the way things in her world ran. Enrique eventually accepted that Isabella as his heir and
announced it to the kingdom. Even though Isabella was often alone there was a time where Enrique sent her to another town where Isabella was
considered a stranger. In the book, Isabella the Warrior Queen it says, "It is just as likely that the marital alliance was Enrique's attempt to remove
Isabella from the direct line of succession in Castile and relocate her to a distant land." (p 47) Luckily, Gonzalo and his nephew were around which
helped her mood. Being surrounded by friends is always helpful after a tragedy, like a family

In the film, 1492: The Conquest of Paradise, Christopher Columbus embarked on a journey to cross the sea in search of honor, gold, and the greater
glory of god. At the University of Salamanca, Columbus had lost the respect of the commissioners, who disproved all of his works. While Columbus
was searching for maps, he encountered a seaman named MartГn Alonso PinzГіn. PinzГіn claimed that he had a friend named Santangel, who was a
banker who the Queen owed money to. From this connection, Columbus later met with Queen Isabella I, who gave him his ships and supplies for his

What Are Christopher Columbus's Achievements
Christopher Columbus, just like many others, had aspirations. He did what he needed to do before reaching his goals and that was to strive hard and
live life by following his dream. While Christopher Columbus espied to find a sea route to Asia and failed, he did discover a new continent. His
discovery inspired a generation of exploration. Columbus mobilized one of the greatest migrations the world has ever seen.
Christopher Columbus was a European explorer and navigator, who was born on October 31, 145l in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. As a young adult,
he got a job on a merchant ship and he remained on the ship until 1470, when French privateers attacked his ship as it sailed north along the
Portuguese coast. The ship sank, but Columbus floated to shore on a piece of wood and made his way to Lisbon. There he studied mathematics,
astronomy, cartography and navigation. In 1476 when he traveled to Portugal, he set up a map making business with his brother, Bartholomew. He also
started to formulate a plan that would change the world forever.

wasn't necessarily the first European to reach the "New World" the Vikings had reached the land several hundred years previously, but not enough
word about them spread. Columbus was traveling island to island for months looking for "pearls, precious stones, gold, silver, spices, and other
objects and merchandise whatsoever" that he had promised he would bring back to the Spanish. In March of 1493, Columbus left to Spain, leaving 40

The Discovery Of The Bahamas
As far as I can recall my existing knowledge from kindergarten to high school, Columbus has always been described as a heroic figure who overcame
countless obstacles fearlessly and finally found the "New World." For a long time, there were numerous authors, poets, and painters praising
Columbus's legendary journey and his extraordinary contribution to mankind. However, after reading "The Discovery of the Bahamas," the sailing
logs written by Columbus, I figured that Columbus may not be such a man who is worthy of all the praises. There are two literary works related to the
subjects. The painting, "Christopher Columbus at the royal court of Spain," was created in 1884 by VГЎclav BroЕѕГk, and depicts Columbus
requesting, from Queen Isabella, King Ferdinand and groups of courtiers, funding for additional voyages. The poem, "Prayer of Columbus," written by
Walt Whitman in 1874, expresses Columbus's praise of God for all his achievements, believing that God would still be on his side even though he had
been through all the sufferings. While BroЕѕГk's painting creates imagery, directly expressing Columbus's ambition by his posture, and implied
Spaniards' eagerness of power and building empires with the reactions of Queen Isabella I and Ferdinand V and a gathering of courtiers, Whitman
employs repetition and religious iconography to create a sharp contrast between Columbus's fearless, unconquerable mind in his early life and his
helplessness at the end of his last voyage.

How Did Christopher Columbus The King Of America
Columbus first presented his plan for a western route to the Indies to the court of Portugal in 1485. The king's experts believed that the route would be
longer than Columbus thought (the actual distance is even longer than the Portuguese believed), and they denied Columbus' request. Then, he tried to
get backing from the monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, who, by marrying, had united the largest kingdoms of Spain and were
ruling them together.
After seven years of lobbying at the Spanish court, where he was kept on a salary to prevent him from taking his ideas elsewhere, Columbus was
finally successful in convincing Ferdinand and Isabella to approve his voyage in 1492.
About half of the financing came from private Italian investors, whom Columbus had already lined up. Financially broken from wars against Muslims
in the Iberian peninsula, the monarchs left it to the royal treasurer to shift funds among various royal accounts on behalf of the enterprise. According to
the contract that Columbus made with the King and Queen, if Columbus discovered any new islands or mainland, he would:

How Did Spain Influence The Conquest Of Spain?
In the late 1400s, when Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon got married, they decided to join forces and unite their kingdoms. This newly
united country was known as Spain. Isabella and Ferdinand were both Catholic, so they wanted their new country to remain Catholic as well.
Achieving this goal was not originally an issue, but became a major challenge in around the late 1400s to the early 1500s, when the Protestant
Reformation began. Protestantism, a new branch of Christianity, had spread rapidly around Europe. Around this time period, a Dominican friar warned
Isabella that even though Spain was at that time a Catholic country, former Jews and Muslims who had converted to Catholicism were living there and

During the Inquisition, hundreds of thousands of Jews and Muslims were either converted to Catholicism by force, tortured, or killed. These massive
groups of people were conquered and controlled by Spain. This fact gave the monarchs the idea that if they could convert these people to their
religion, maybe they could discover other societies and convert their people. The Spanish went on to conquer the Incas and the Aztecs in the 1500s,
two South American peoples (Herbut). Although no one can say whether or not these events would have happened even if the Inquisition did not, the
Inquisition certainly inspired the Spanish to set out exploring and to conquer new territories. Exploration and expanding their empire made Spain a
more prominent and stronger global power. Spain was also able to gain knowledge and insight from visiting these empires. The conquered
civilizations, the Aztecs and Incas, used a form of government that combined religion and politics. In their government, there was no main leader of all
citizens. Instead, missionaries from various cultures were granted control over areas of land which are now known as parts of Mexico and the
American Southwest (Spanish Colonization). Even though the original reason to come to these areas was to convert both societies to Catholicism,
Spain ended up benefiting from learning this style of government and they were able to use it to their own political benefits

What Was The Purpose Of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was an italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer that thought that if you sail West on the Atlantic Ocean, you could get to Asia
the fastest. He didn't realize that the Western Hemisphere was between Europe and Asia. He misinterpreted the size of the earth. So, he thought Japan
would appear on the horizon of the sea if he went West for three thousand miles. For many years he tried so hard to get England, portugal,Spain,
Genoa, and Venice to support him and give him ships and men. Columbus was ready to set sail on his voyage to find new lands for whatever
country would pay for him. This is either because of his arrogance or his ambition, but it was difficult to find someone to support him. The rulers of
England and France were not very interested in his voyage and the Portuguese rejected his plan, not once but twice. The Portuguese are the ones that
had started exploration while starting around 1420 caravels, small portuguese ships, were going along the African coast while carrying goods like
spices, gold, slaves and more from Europe and Asia. Columbus had a large amount of influential supporters with him at court that helped convince King
Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile to help and support his expedition. Columbus received a polite agreement from the Spanish monarchs.
When the fall of Granada happened, they were now to focus on challenging exploration and trade with portugal in 1492. The Spanish monarchs

The Life of Katherine of Aragon
Katherine of Aragon is famous for being the first of Henry VIII's many wives, the one who fought back and defended her papally sanctioned
marriage; the mother of Mary I; and the daughter of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, founders of the kingdom of EspaГ±a. These facts
place her in the position of a traditional sixteenth century woman by defining her as wife, mother, and daughter. In these roles, many women have
been overlooked as the subject of their own study, and it certainly makes sense to do this, as on the surface they are not in control of their own
agency. Looking deeper, however, one can see that this role places women instead in a position of power. From behind the scenes, women like
Katherine were able to pull the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the last Plantagenet was out of the way, Isabella and Ferdinand sent Katherine off to England with a valuable trousseau and a fleet of wealthy
Spanish nobles. The trip was long and hard, but when they arrived in Plymouth they were greeted with joy and excitement. There were celebrations and
dinners before they continued on their way to London. On the night of November 4, at the Bishop's Palace in Dogmersfield, Henry VII, his son Arthur,
and members of the Privy Council arrived unannounced to see the Infanta. After being told that she was already in bed Henry insisted on seeing her
anyway and proceeded to her room where they met for the first time. On November 9, Katherine arrived in London, and she and Arthur were married on

Spanish Edict Of Expulsion
The history of the Jewish people in Spain is certainly a pivotal time period that changed the future of the Jews and specifically, the Sephardic Jews. At
the time of the issuing and signing of the Edict of Expulsion on March 31, 1492, Spanish Jews were experiencing the most persecution that had been
felt in the many centuries of which the Jews had been in Spain. Spanish Jewry came to a dramatic end after almost a millennium of Jewish presence in
the country. Spanish Jewry's golden age, however, the Jews experienced almost no persecution, resulting in a new centre of Talmudic study, before
suffering from a relapse of anti–Semitism that eventually led to the Inquisition and the Edict of Expulsion. (SOURCE 1) This essay will discuss and

For the Jews, it was almost impossible to maintain any sliver of wealth that they had in Spain, since Jews were forbidden to leave Spain with gold,
silver or any other precious metals. As a result, only their must prized or important possessions could be taken to their new home, as they were
physically restricted for what they could take. A delegation of influential Jewish people including the Chief Rabbi of Castile, Abraham Senior and
Issac Abarbanel, a financial adviser to the state appeared before Ferdinand and Isabella as a last–ditch effort to save Spanish Jewry and cancel the Edict
of Expulsion. The delegation presented the catholic monarchs with a bag of gold to support their argument, however, Ferdinand and Isabella
remained unchanged in respects to the Edict. The Jews began searching for their new homes, and most Jews, unwilling to embark on a long

Christopher Columbus Motives
Christopher Columbus is an Italian Explorer who had convinced King Ferdinand, the Second and Queen Isabella the First to fund a voyage to Asia
to establish trade with China, Japan, India, and the Spice Islands to get valuable spices and silks. Spain went with a foreign explorer because of his
benefits over the local explorers. To see what these people's motives are and what they want I will do a background check for the King, the Queen, and
Columbus. I'll also go through why the King and Queen went with Christopher Columbus's pitch for his voyage. This will shed more light on why King
Ferdinand and Queen Isabella chose Columbus.
Columbus had been born in the Republic of Genoa in 1451. Columbus had first gone to sea and was in charge of helping with smaller trading trips
throughout the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. One voyage in the Atlantic in 1476 almost cost Columbus his life. The ship he was on got burned
down and Columbus had to swim back to Portugal. He eventually moved to Spain after having two wives and two children. Columbus went on many
expeditions to Africa and gained knowledge on wave currents. Columbus started studying the Asian islands close to India and China because he had
heard of their supposed wealth from other Europeans, he also was curious about the Canary Islands. Columbus began to propose his idea of a three
ship voyage across the Atlantic to the Portuguese King, Genoa, and Venice. Columbus requested the Spanish King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella

The World And Empires By Anthony Pagden
Peoples and Empires Throughout history there have been a multitude of different empires to rise up and conquer land, along with the people inhabiting
that land. More often than not, these empires fell. Whether the empire was quickly abolished, or it maintained power for decades, most of them were
over thrown. Anthony Pagden, who at the time of publication was a history professor at John Hopkins, wrote the book Peoples and Empires in 2003 to
explain the history of the once "Great European Empires". These empires included, but are not limited to, the French, the Spanish, the British, and the
Roman Empire. One major idea of the content focuses on how these particular empires justified their conquering, not only to themselves, but also to
their followers and the people who rebelled against them. Conquerors would travel to the ends of the earth in order to obtain more land which in
turn is more power. However, in order to do this they had to justify their actions to the individuals occupying that land. In doing so, they fabricated
what they assumed were acceptable reasons as to why an empire was more luxurious, or in other words "better", than the systems they had in place
before. The most common ideology between all of the empires was the simple idea of being "civilized" versus being "barbaric" or "savage". Pagden
thoroughly explains how the empires used this ideology and coupled it with small force to justify their actions and the overall concept of an empire:

How Did Pope Sixtus Influence The Church
Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon were religious purists of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. These Spanish monarchs are
accredited with the atrocities that were perpetrated by the governmental and religious authorities in Medieval Spain. Isabella and Ferdinand viewed the
religious diversity in Spain, increasingly consisting of Muslims, Jews, and New Christians, as harmful and impure. Catholicism, the primary religion of
the land and practice of the monarchs, was becoming less powerful and less universal. Viewing this as unacceptable, Isabella and Ferdinand brought the
issue to the Pope, Sixtus IV. In response to the tenacious pressuring from the two, Sixtus agreed to the purposefully vague terms of the Spanish... Show

Pope Sixtus, the church authority who permitted the persecution, was a man of luxury. Early on in his reign, he established himself as a Pope with
expensive taste and expansive vision. His churches throughout Italy served to put him in a favorable light amongst the visionaries and upper–class.
Sixtus' greatest achievement during his reign was his commissioning of the world–renowned Sistine Chapel. He commissioned painters and architects
to fill the illustrious ceilings with murals and religious imagery to emphasize his prosperity. Sixtus' obsession with the Papal image was his major
character flaw. His unyielding desire for extravagance was what allowed his lapse in judgment to occur. The Pope not only had an opportunity to cast
out the notion of an Inquisition as soon as the proposition was brought forth, he also had an opportunity to extinguish the movement after the
realization that his granted authority was being abused. His willingness to give in to political pressure even when confronted by injustice is
comparable to Pontius Pilate's reaction to Jesus of Nazareth. Pilate, when the chief priests brought forth Jesus, was faced with the decision of either
displeasing his people, or crucifying a potentially innocent man. Like Sixtus, instead of choosing the morally upright decision, Pilate chose the socially
and politically convenient choice and gave into the demands of the Jews and his

The Spanish Reconquista and the formation of Spanish national identity
During the times the Iberian Peninsula was ruled by the Muslims and was called Al–Andalus, Christians, Jews and Muslims coexisted in harmony in
the Caliphates. However, the understanding of Spain as it is understood today did not exist. It was because of the Christianisation of the peninsula and
the Reconquista that Iberia was reimagined as something more similar to what we understand today as Spain and Portugal. In this essay I intend to

Whether this battle is real or an invention from some scribe in the eleventh or twelfth Century is uncertain, but it is doubtfully key to the
understanding of the cult to the saint, since the legend tells that he appeared to King Ramiro I on a dream promising his victory over the Moors, and
even after being severely injured in a previous battle by the enemy army, they took victory over their foes . One of the biggest collections of
iconography is in the Santiago de Compostela cathedral, where a large collection of pictures and sculptures dress the building with his image .
Perhaps the most recognizable figure of the whole Reconquista is El Cid Campeador, a Castilian nobleman who regained the city of Valencia in
1094. Almost everything we know about him comes from texts dating over a century and a half after his death, so there has been speculation about
if he was indeed a real man or just a legend, although this seems to be completely speculated since there is proof enough to say with almost all
certainty that he indeed existed . He gained the city of Valencia in 1409, only to be lost again three years after his death . Still, his image was still
very present and magnified in the subsequent years, inspiring all kinds of art and literature, such as the very significant Cantar del Myo Г‡yd, the
oldest preserved epic poem, which tells his story.
Despite being loss after his death, the city of Valencia was won again by Jaume I El Conqueridor (The Conqueror) in 1231 and

Queen Isabella The book Queen Isabella and the Unification of Spain tells the story of Queen Isabella's life. It shows how she became queen, who
she got married to, the life of her children and their marriages, how Isabella deals with and fixes conflicts, and in all rules her kingdom. Many
problems rise up that Isabella has to worry about, like deaths, losing her throne, wars, conflict in religion, and many other everyday trials. Some of
the bigger, life changing events will be addressed in this essay through questions some might have about Queen Isabella. How did Isabella become
queen? How did she keep peace between countries, and unity with in Castile? Was Isabella able to keep her children in royal Families? How did
Isabella become queen? Well, King Enrique IV was the ruler of Castile before Isabella. Enrique and Isabella are half siblings sharing an insane
mother and different fathers. Enrique was not a good king, when the town would complain about taxes, hunger, and poverty, the king would not
listen and would go escape into the woods hunt and do other things. Isabella and her brother knew that he was to right for the throne, but knew it
would be wrong to take it from him, which is what Enrique was worried about. After Alfanso (Isabella's brother) died, Enrique kept trying to send
Isabella away or marry her off, but they ended up signing a treaty that Isabella would no longer be forced to marry anyone she does not agree to.

Renaissance Theater Spain
Historical events in Renaissance Theater Spain were often fused with the creative writing styles of playwrights to create dramas. These dramas, like
the play Fuenteovejuna, were based on true events, and the historical elements were incorporated into performances by playwrights. The play,
Fuenteovejuna, is a dramatization of an actual event that happened in 1476, about one hundred years before the famous playwright, Lope de Vega,
was born. Theater during the Spanish Renaissance time period was one of the most advanced because of the innovative writing forms of the
playwrights. The Spanish playwright, Lope de Vega, played an important role in the art of theater, and was influenced by the events, culture, and
lifestyles of Renaissance Spain.
The marriage of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in 1469 joined Spain together, creating a prosperous empire that became both
rich and secluded. Their marriage placed all of Spain under a single ruler before other countries in Europe, and created a stable environment for the
people. Not long after their marriage, Ferdinand and Isabella began seeking out non–Christians in The Inquisition. They wanted to cleanse the people of
Spain of all the people who were not Catholic. Many non–believers became frightened, and converted to Catholicism out of fear. This directed Spain
into even more seclusion. This seclusion, over time, would allow Spain to make new advancements in art and culture, and would develop into what

mother, Isabella of Portugal, raised her. She had blonde hair with auburn and chestnut hues and a light skin tone which was unusual because most
Spanish ladies had dark hair and olive skin tone. She had medium height for her era. Isabella I was a kind, intelligent and ambitious woman. When

Consequently, Columbus states that the Indians have a closer relationship to the lord based on their lifestyle, selflessness, and kindness to strangers.
Moreover, in this letter he also ascertains a degree of innocence in the Indians while drawing a distinction amongst the Europeans advantageous actions
in the exchanges for broken objects for pieces of valuable gold. Throughout the letter, Columbus describes his prohibition in the colonists to trade with
the Indians since he deemed it unfair to trade something worthless to the Spaniards for gold that would grant them and the crown more wealth.
Columbus' ulterior motives are dominated by the socio–cultural and religious teachings of the Catholic Church. Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of

Was Christopher Columbus, Navigator, And Collonist
Christopher Columbus is an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer was born in the republic Genoa. Columbus is actually not the first European to
cross the Atlantic ocean. Word is that Norse ,who is a viking, was believed to land on the Atlantic ocean around 1000 A.D., Which was five centuries
before columbus even set sail to make this trip. What most people don't know is that whenever columbus returned to spain he was returned in chains in

Analysis Of The Poem ' A Key Of Salonika ' By Jorge Luis...
It Seems That All Keys Are Keys
A key possesses as many definitions as the number of cuts it has. "A Key in Salonika" is a sonnet composed by Jorge Luis Borges that presents the
reader with three keys. All serve to symbolize the reaction of the Jewish community to three different events. Even though the speaker writes a series of
stanzas adorned by literary devices and words, the reader must keep in mind the degree to which the speaker is feeding to us an effective representation
of these historical events. Although the details and language of Borges' sonnet reveal that there is an ongoing tension within the Jewish community
about how to respond to the hatred of their existence, it does not effectively represent the real historical events. ... Show more content on

Just as the first historical event presented by the poem, the second one depicts the misery that the Jews underwent in an earlier era. The speaker writes
"Like the other temple key (line 11)". Upon reading this line, it brings to mind two important temples that were turned to dust. The first of which was
named Solomon's Temple and destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar I. The second temple was destroyed by the Roman army under Titus. The speaker clears
up this ambiguity by writing, "when Roman soldiers bent / And charged with dreadful flames and discipline (line 12–13)". This points to the Roman
retaliation against the Jews when they rebelled in year 66 AD. The Romans fought in two ways. The first was with "dreadful flames". The Romans did
not simply set the temple ablaze, they captured thousands of people, regardless of age, class, and gender, and slaughtered them for amusement. The
second manner was with "discipline". The other half of Jews that were not killed were tormented and forced to work in the Egyptian mines ("The
Romans Destroy...").
The second key suggests that the Jews have accepted and forgiven the Romans for destruction of the second temple. When the speaker discusses the
first key, there is an overwhelming amount of mixed emotions that accompany the event related to it. This is evident with the use of words such as
"hope", "terror", "calm", and so on. However, when the

Christopher Columbus : The True Agenda Essay
The True Agenda Christopher Columbus was born in born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was not born into a very wealthy family like many assume
he was, but in fact was born into a middle working class family. Christopher's father worked extremely hard as a wool weaver to support his wife
and four children. Ever since a young age the ocean and the endless opportunities of where it could lead fascinated Christopher. As Columbus got
older, he developed a theory. He believed it would be faster for European countries to travel westward to Asia rather then eastward. In order for
Columbus to pay for his expedition to the west to test his theory, Columbus needed to find financial support from any of the royal families who would
listen to his proposal. Christopher also saw this as an opportunity to create a name for himself, he too like many people, desired fame and power. In
1483, Columbus attempted to convince King John II of Portugal but King John II rejected Columbus's proposal after consulting with other explorers
and mariners whom he trusted. The explorers and mariners King John II consulted, claimed that Columbus's idea was frankly absurd and virtually
impossible. After being humiliated and discouraged, Columbus attempted to convince King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. But after his first

How Did Christopher Columbus Vision Dbq

  • 1. How Did Christopher Columbus Vision Dbq Columbus' vision to reach Asia by sailing west was rejected a number of times by the King of Portugal, James II – and at first was equally rejected by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. These rejections were decisions derived from recommendations made by royal "scientific" committees. Each of these committees deemed that Columbus had grossly underestimated the distance and time in voyaging west to reach the Asian continent. It was Ferdinand who recalled Columbus to the royal court of Spain, and upon "political" reconsideration with his wife Queen Isabella – the Royals eventually agreed to finance the exploration dream of Christopher Columbus (Kreis). Proving the committees correct, and nearing dangerously low levels of remaining supplies; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The natives had no basis to recognize the extreme value of these items to Columbus and his men – nor how far these "visitors" would go to gain/take such "things" (Halstall). Columbus immediately noticed the natives had no real weapons, and remarked that he and fifty of his men could easily conquer these obviously friendly and peaceful people. Communication was mostly by sign, but intrinsically was achieved because the natives did not perceive any threat to their wellbeing (Primary Doc. 1). While the excerpts of the Journal are mostly attributed to Columbus himself, little of the Admiral's personal logs still exist. In fact, most of the "excerpts" existing today are reconstructions utilizing later quotations – as well as letters and reports to/from: King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella; trusted officials; family; and fellow voyagers. Columbus' brother Bartholomew; Columbus' sons Hernando and Ferdinand; Andres Bernaldez (a friend); and Bartolome de las Casas (a Catholic Bishop and historiographer of Columbus) have all been recognized as contributing to the "reconstructions" of Columbus' Journal ... • 2. Christopher Columbus Seeking a Royal Sponsorship "Christopher Columbus Seeking a Royal Sponsorship" Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in fourteen fifty one. His father was a merchant that traded wine and other things, and there is where Christopher Columbus worked. They were considered to be the lower middle class back in this time. This town was almost surrounded entirely by sea, and there were a lot of sailors. Christopher Columbus grew tired of working on land and became fascinated by the ocean and sailing, so when he became a teenager he got a job working on a merchant ship. Were he stayed out at sea until fourteen seventy, when pirates attacked the ship he was working on. Christopher Columbus managed to escape on an ore, and floated for days until he reached the Portuguese coast. Portugal was the leader of ocean navigation during this time and this was a perfect place for Columbus. In this biography I plan on talking about how Christopher Columbus planned on seeking a royal sponsorship on his outrageous plan to discover a new route to China, but instead he stumbles upon a new world. Now Christopher Columbus is starting to contemplate this idea that the world is twenty percent smaller than what it really was. But this proved to become untrue, and if he would had knew this he probably wouldn't have took the chance in sailing in this uncharted ocean. There was to believe that the ocean to the west was consumed with sea monsters and unknown horrors. So after reading letters of Marco Polo, he came to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. TomГЎs De Torquemada TomГЎs de Torquemada (tour– k – mah – da) was appointed as Grand Inquisitor through Pope Sixtus IV in 1482 (Biography.com, 2018). Torquemada was responsible for thousands of innocent deaths. Known as the Black Legend, he spread fear throughout Spain, and eventually throughout all of the Spanish colonies. Thousands of innocent people were arrested, interrogated, mercilessly tortured and many were killed. The Spanish Inquisition was established 1478 by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Castile to control the people of Spain and consolidate Catholicism as the only allowable religion of Spain. This was accomplished by forcibly converting Jews and Muslims (The Moors) to Christianity through torture, threat of death and confiscation of property ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Church and the King wanted to eliminate all other religions and reduce autonomy of the many regions. Many scholars feel that the Holy Office of the Spanish Inquisition was a precursor of secret police. As an ancestor to the Star of David, used by the Nazis to mark Jews, the Inquisition had several tunics of different styles prisoners had to wear to indicate their sentence of heresy. The Sambenito tunic was marked to indicate if the prisoner was going to be burned alive at the stake, killed before being burned or committed to do penance. (Thenagain.info, 2014) In Ferdinand and Isabella's efforts to convert or expel the Muslim population in Southern Spain, they conducted a ten–year campaign against the Emirate of Granada. The Treaty of Granada took place November 25, 1491 between King Ferdinand and Isabella and the Emirate of Granada (Islamic Nation on Iberian Peninsula). The treaty agreed that fair treatment and broadmindedness of the Moors (Muslims) would be accepted in trade for their submission. The Moors had to convert to Catholicism or be banished or killed. The treaty ended after an uprising of the Moors in the 1500's, which caused King Ferdinand to end the treaty after he thought they broke ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Differences Between France And Spain Spain focused was on converting the peoples in their Latin American empire to Christianity. This is because of Queen Isabella's commitment to her catholic faith. While others worried about the potential riches of the new world, Isabella concerned herself about the Indians. This resulted in an early perception by the Catholic Church, and the establishment of missions in all of Spain's territories. The church brought with it culture such as music, literature, and academics. The French did not focus on trying to change people to Christianity. The French focus was to export there culture, along with the food and the language. Then, the French dealt with their colonial subjects differently than Spain and England did. Colonization of the New World Colonization of the New World The discovery and colonization of the "New World" was one of the most significant and influential events in the known history of mankind. It has shaped our present by changing the course of our past and is a time of such great significance that it would be all but impossible to understand today without at least some comprehension of the why 's of yesterday. What was it that drove such a myriad of people to risk so much to tame the wild and vast lands we now know as and call the Americas. What were the reasons, motivations, causes, events, and possibilities that captured the minds and hearts of so many different peoples from such divers backgrounds? What led them to leave their friends, families, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Howard Zinn it was for the Gold. Zinn claims that it was money and power that were driving forces behind Columbus. He tells us that Spain promised him a 10% cut of all the gold found, governorship of any new found lands, and the new title of Admiral.[2] Gold and the regulation thereof are the primary focuses of Columbus ' letter to the King and Queen of Spain, thought to have been written around the year 1492, but definitely written after the his initial discovery.[3] So whether wholly or in part it appears that riches and power were factors contributing to Columbus ' decision to risk so much. After all he made multiple trips across the Atlantic not just one. So apparently he was concerned with more than just the discovery of a trade route. Columbus ' discovery was made possible by the Spanish Crown therefore all new found lands were claimed in the name of Spain and a Spanish flag planted on the soil thereof in testament to this fact. Spain was still a catholic nation at this time and the Spanish monarchy still acknowledged the Pope as the dominant spiritual authority on the Earth. However it would not be long after Columbus ' discovery that all of Europe would be shaken to its very foundation and set ablaze in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. This revolution in spiritual thought was the result of a simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Foreign Parties "Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationship Between Foreign Parties" "The Lord purposed that there should be something clearly miraculous in this matter of the voyage to the Indies . . . I spent seven years here in your royal court discussing this subject with the leading persons in all learned arts, and their conclusion was that it was vain.... But afterwards it all turned out just as our redeemer Jesus Christ has said, and as he had spoken earlier by the mouth of his holy prophets."–Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy and eventually moved to spain. He has participated in several expeditions to Africa, which gained him valuable knowledge of the Atlantic ocean. 1485. Columbus is taking a passage to Palos, Spain looking for a sponsor for his voyage to the Indies. He proposed this same voyage to the Portuguese king, Genoa, and lastly Venice, which all three rejected his idea of a three–ship voyage. He was now on his way to Spain to talk to Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon. Yet again, Colombus was rejected due to the fact they were focused on a was with the Muslim, but was never forgot about Columbus and his voyage. Columbus continued to seek influence on his voyage, and finally the Spanish captured the last Muslim on January 1492. Shortly after, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand agreed to pay for his expedition. He exclaimed once getting his voyage accepted , "I spent seven years here in your royal court discussing this subject with the leading persons in all the learned arts, and their conclusion was that all was in vain. That was the end, and they gave it up. But afterwards it all turned out just as our redeemer Jesus Christ had said, and as he had spoken earlier by the mouth of his holy prophets" Why would a Spanish monarchy pay for an Italian man to travel across the world? Well the three main reasons are: belief for a shorter route for Asia, profit, and the spread of Christianity. They thought if they could find a shorter route to Asia they can control that water route making money from ports and gaining control of that route to take advantage of other countries. This new trade route would make Spain one of the richest countries at this time. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Pros And Cons Of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus, in many eyes, created a path for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His excellent navigation skills set a precedent for other explorers. He is renowned for four voyages across the Atlantic from Spain. He is most known for "discovering" the Americas when he was instead looking for a more efficient route from Europe to Asia. Columbus opened the way for conquest and colonization. Although Columbus was Italian, the navigator and survivalist was hired and sponsored by the Spanish monarchs in 1492 to explore and find a new route to Asia. There are speculations as to why Spain would hire a foreign explorer, but there are many simple explanations as to why. Therefore, this paper will give in–depth explanations and justifications of the reasons why the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, sponsored the expeditions led by Christopher Columbus, an Italian. In 1469, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand Aragon united in marriage. When they got married, they ruled two separate kingdoms. However, during their marriage, they decided that they would rule their kingdoms together as one. This made them rulers of most of Spain. Before 1492, Spain did not have much success. The only territory in their possession outside of Europe was the Canary Islands. Spain desperately needed success and control. The kingdom wanted to be a higher power in Europe. • 8. Spanish Empire Research Paper Overall Introduction The Spanish Empire began with the union of Aragon and Castile to create the unified territory of Spain. The exile of the moors created an attitude towards religious dominion. This need to go out and convert other people led to the Age of Exploration in which Spain discovered many new lands and converted millions of natives. This period also created the most prosperous economy for Spain but would later be detrimental to the empire. New findings of gold and silver flooded the economy which caused economic problems to coincide with other major factors that caused the empire to fall. She had a complicated childhood and became a great ruler.Isabella I of Castile, was born April 22, 1451, she was half Spanish and half Portuguese. After Alfonso's death Isabella was not sure if she would be able to rule Spain as a woman. Many people doubted and even her herself doubted. Enrique and Alfonso were planning on arranging a marriage for Isabella eventually, but Isabella had her interest somewhere else. Living as a woman, Isabella wanted equality and equity for women. In the book it says, "Issues that affected women were always of particular interest to Isabella, and gender relations also colored the perceptions of people living in Spain. All three great faiths––Judaism, Christianity, and Islam––honored women in certain ways but were also patriarchal and made women second–class citizens in other significant ways." (p 22) When there was a possibility for Isabella to become queen she wanted to truly impact the way things in her world ran. Enrique eventually accepted that Isabella as his heir and announced it to the kingdom. Even though Isabella was often alone there was a time where Enrique sent her to another town where Isabella was considered a stranger. In the book, Isabella the Warrior Queen it says, "It is just as likely that the marital alliance was Enrique's attempt to remove Isabella from the direct line of succession in Castile and relocate her to a distant land." While Columbus was searching for maps, he encountered a seaman named MartГn Alonso PinzГіn. PinzГіn claimed that he had a friend named Santangel, who was a banker who the Queen owed money to. • 14. What Are Christopher Columbus's Achievements Christopher Columbus, just like many others, had aspirations. He did what he needed to do before reaching his goals and that was to strive hard and live life by following his dream. While Christopher Columbus espied to find a sea route to Asia and failed, he did discover a new continent. His discovery inspired a generation of exploration. Columbus mobilized one of the greatest migrations the world has ever seen. Christopher Columbus was a European explorer and navigator, who was born on October 31, 145l in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. As a young adult, he got a job on a merchant ship and he remained on the ship until 1470, when French privateers attacked his ship as it sailed north along the Portuguese coast. The ship sank, but Columbus floated to shore on a piece of wood and made his way to Lisbon. There he studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography and navigation. In 1476 when he traveled to Portugal, he set up a map making business with his brother, Bartholomew. He also started to formulate a plan that would change the world forever. Columbus was traveling island to island for months looking for "pearls, precious stones, gold, silver, spices, and other objects and merchandise whatsoever" that he had promised he would bring back to the Spanish. • 15. The Discovery Of The Bahamas As far as I can recall my existing knowledge from kindergarten to high school, Columbus has always been described as a heroic figure who overcame countless obstacles fearlessly and finally found the "New World." For a long time, there were numerous authors, poets, and painters praising Columbus's legendary journey and his extraordinary contribution to mankind. However, after reading "The Discovery of the Bahamas," the sailing logs written by Columbus, I figured that Columbus may not be such a man who is worthy of all the praises. There are two literary works related to the subjects. The painting, "Christopher Columbus at the royal court of Spain," was created in 1884 by VГЎclav BroЕѕГk, and depicts Columbus requesting, from Queen Isabella, King Ferdinand and groups of courtiers, funding for additional voyages. The poem, "Prayer of Columbus," written by Walt Whitman in 1874, expresses Columbus's praise of God for all his achievements, believing that God would still be on his side even though he had been through all the sufferings. While BroЕѕГk's painting creates imagery, directly expressing Columbus's ambition by his posture, and implied Spaniards' eagerness of power and building empires with the reactions of Queen Isabella I and Ferdinand V and a gathering of courtiers, Whitman employs repetition and religious iconography to create a sharp contrast between Columbus's fearless, unconquerable mind in his early life and his helplessness at the end of his last voyage. ... • 16. How Did Christopher Columbus The King Of America Columbus first presented his plan for a western route to the Indies to the court of Portugal in 1485. The king's experts believed that the route would be longer than Columbus thought (the actual distance is even longer than the Portuguese believed), and they denied Columbus' request. Then, he tried to get backing from the monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, who, by marrying, had united the largest kingdoms of Spain and were ruling them together. After seven years of lobbying at the Spanish court, where he was kept on a salary to prevent him from taking his ideas elsewhere, Columbus was finally successful in convincing Ferdinand and Isabella to approve his voyage in 1492. About half of the financing came from private Italian investors, whom Columbus had already lined up. Financially broken from wars against Muslims in the Iberian peninsula, the monarchs left it to the royal treasurer to shift funds among various royal accounts on behalf of the enterprise. This newly united country was known as Spain. Isabella and Ferdinand were both Catholic, so they wanted their new country to remain Catholic as well. Achieving this goal was not originally an issue, but became a major challenge in around the late 1400s to the early 1500s, when the Protestant Reformation began. These massive groups of people were conquered and controlled by Spain. This fact gave the monarchs the idea that if they could convert these people to their religion, maybe they could discover other societies and convert their people. The Spanish went on to conquer the Incas and the Aztecs in the 1500s, two South American peoples (Herbut). Although no one can say whether or not these events would have happened even if the Inquisition did not, the Inquisition certainly inspired the Spanish to set out exploring and to conquer new territories. Exploration and expanding their empire made Spain a more prominent and stronger global power. Spain was also able to gain knowledge and insight from visiting these empires. The conquered civilizations, the Aztecs and Incas, used a form of government that combined religion and politics. In their government, there was no main leader of all citizens. Instead, missionaries from various cultures were granted control over areas of land which are now known as parts of Mexico and the American Southwest (Spanish Colonization). He didn't realize that the Western Hemisphere was between Europe and Asia. He misinterpreted the size of the earth. So, he thought Japan would appear on the horizon of the sea if he went West for three thousand miles. For many years he tried so hard to get England, portugal,Spain, Genoa, and Venice to support him and give him ships and men. • 27. The World And Empires By Anthony Pagden Peoples and Empires Throughout history there have been a multitude of different empires to rise up and conquer land, along with the people inhabiting that land. More often than not, these empires fell. Whether the empire was quickly abolished, or it maintained power for decades, most of them were over thrown. Anthony Pagden, who at the time of publication was a history professor at John Hopkins, wrote the book Peoples and Empires in 2003 to explain the history of the once "Great European Empires". These empires included, but are not limited to, the French, the Spanish, the British, and the Roman Empire. One major idea of the content focuses on how these particular empires justified their conquering, not only to themselves, but also to their followers and the people who rebelled against them. Conquerors would travel to the ends of the earth in order to obtain more land which in turn is more power. However, in order to do this they had to justify their actions to the individuals occupying that land. In doing so, they fabricated what they assumed were acceptable reasons as to why an empire was more luxurious, or in other words "better", than the systems they had in place before. The most common ideology between all of the empires was the simple idea of being "civilized" versus being "barbaric" or "savage". Pagden thoroughly explains how the empires used this ideology and coupled it with small force to justify their actions and the overall concept of an empire: "They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pope Sixtus, the church authority who permitted the persecution, was a man of luxury. Early on in his reign, he established himself as a Pope with expensive taste and expansive vision. His churches throughout Italy served to put him in a favorable light amongst the visionaries and upper–class. Sixtus' greatest achievement during his reign was his commissioning of the world–renowned Sistine Chapel. He commissioned painters and architects to fill the illustrious ceilings with murals and religious imagery to emphasize his prosperity. Sixtus' obsession with the Papal image was his major character flaw. His unyielding desire for extravagance was what allowed his lapse in judgment to occur. The Pope not only had an opportunity to cast out the notion of an Inquisition as soon as the proposition was brought forth, he also had an opportunity to extinguish the movement after the realization that his granted authority was being abused. His willingness to give in to political pressure even when confronted by injustice is comparable to Pontius Pilate's reaction to Jesus of Nazareth. Pilate, when the chief priests brought forth Jesus, was faced with the decision of either displeasing his people, or crucifying a potentially innocent man. Whether this battle is real or an invention from some scribe in the eleventh or twelfth Century is uncertain, but it is doubtfully key to the understanding of the cult to the saint, since the legend tells that he appeared to King Ramiro I on a dream promising his victory over the Moors, and even after being severely injured in a previous battle by the enemy army, they took victory over their foes . One of the biggest collections of iconography is in the Santiago de Compostela cathedral, where a large collection of pictures and sculptures dress the building with his image . Perhaps the most recognizable figure of the whole Reconquista is El Cid Campeador, a Castilian nobleman who regained the city of Valencia in 1094. Almost everything we know about him comes from texts dating over a century and a half after his death, so there has been speculation about if he was indeed a real man or just a legend, although this seems to be completely speculated since there is proof enough to say with almost all certainty that he indeed existed . He gained the city of Valencia in 1409, only to be lost again three years after his death . Still, his image was still very present and magnified in the subsequent years, inspiring all kinds of art and literature, such as the very significant Cantar del Myo Г‡yd, the oldest preserved epic poem, which tells his story. Despite being loss after his death, the city of Valencia was won again by Jaume I El Conqueridor (The Conqueror) in 1231 and

Throughout the letter, Columbus describes his prohibition in the colonists to trade with the Indians since he deemed it unfair to trade something worthless to the Spaniards for gold that would grant them and the crown more wealth. • 38. Analysis Of The Poem ' A Key Of Salonika ' By Jorge Luis... It Seems That All Keys Are Keys A key possesses as many definitions as the number of cuts it has. "A Key in Salonika" is a sonnet composed by Jorge Luis Borges that presents the reader with three keys. All serve to symbolize the reaction of the Jewish community to three different events. Even though the speaker writes a series of stanzas adorned by literary devices and words, the reader must keep in mind the degree to which the speaker is feeding to us an effective representation of these historical events. Although the details and language of Borges' sonnet reveal that there is an ongoing tension within the Jewish community about how to respond to the hatred of their existence, it does not effectively represent the real historical events. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just as the first historical event presented by the poem, the second one depicts the misery that the Jews underwent in an earlier era. The speaker writes "Like the other temple key (line 11)". Upon reading this line, it brings to mind two important temples that were turned to dust. The first of which was named Solomon's Temple and destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar I. The second temple was destroyed by the Roman army under Titus. The speaker clears up this ambiguity by writing, "when Roman soldiers bent / And charged with dreadful flames and discipline (line 12–13)". This points to the Roman retaliation against the Jews when they rebelled in year 66 AD. The Romans fought in two ways. The first was with "dreadful flames". The Romans did not simply set the temple ablaze, they captured thousands of people, regardless of age, class, and gender, and slaughtered them for amusement. The second manner was with "discipline". The other half of Jews that were not killed were tormented and forced to work in the Egyptian mines ("The Romans Destroy..."). The second key suggests that the Jews have accepted and forgiven the Romans for destruction of the second temple. When the speaker discusses the first key, there is an overwhelming amount of mixed emotions that accompany the event related to it. This is evident with the use of words such as "hope", "terror", "calm", and so on. However, when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Christopher also saw this as an opportunity to create a name for himself, he too like many people, desired fame and power. In 1483, Columbus attempted to convince King John II of Portugal but King John II rejected Columbus's proposal after consulting with other explorers and mariners whom he trusted.
