2. INTRODUCTION
For our Creative Thinking Skills final project, we are assigned to create a new board game,
Beforehand, all of us had done our individual proposal and form a group of 6. Our group
members are Yee Ching, Sharon, Amanda, Seen Yee, Yuen Xi and Darren. Jerry’s (Yee Ching)
proposal was chosen and we decided to start work out our board game with the theme of
military and strategy war game with the name of World War 2.5.
In our group, we decided to divide our task among our members. Our eleents include the
game board, instruction booklet, netting, game pieces, promo CD, packaging and the
cards.
!
3. Holding Net
Account by Amanda Ng
Our group came up with an idea of making a holding net to put the cards, dice, tokens,
guidebook and also promo CD. We would like to install the net at the back of the wooden
box cover. It’s sort of like holding net showed (figure 1.1). Thus, we start out our task by
harnessing all the required materials especially the suitable net with elastic band.

!
Figure 1.1
After that, we came out with the design template of the net with suitable compartment’s
measurements and arrangement. As shown in figure below, our design looks like this.
!
!
Figure 1.2
All the materials I used includes the net bought from Daiso, sewing set, elastic band, felt and
pins.

!
!
!
First, I cut the net to three long rectangular pockets for the pieces and cards and a large
square pocket for the guidebook and CD according to the measured size. Three dividing
felts were sewn across the each of the three long pockets to divide it into three identical
compartments. To prevent the edges from fraying, thin strips of felt were sewn around the
fringes. Then, I sewn the opening edge with elastic bands to ensure the pocket can holds the
items securely by preventing them from falling out. After that, I painted the nettings with
black poster colour paint to suit the rustic army theme. Lastly, we fit the nettings together
using the heavy duty thumbtacks.

Packaging
Account by Yong Seen Yee
During the Deepavali break, I went back to her hometown. When I went to my uncle's industry, she
realized that he has collected some woods for recycling. After getting uncle’s permission,I started to
look for the ideal pieces of woods. I soon started my work after harnessing all the materials needed. I
spent almost two days to measure, cut, drill, nail, sand paper and nail the pieces of plank into a nice
wooden box. Below is the picture showing how it looked like.
!
!
!
After I finished my duty of making the box, we discovered a few problems with its function.
The previous idea of our packaging is using butt hinges and padlock to secure the lid with
the box. But since we decided to make the game board to fit inside the box itself, we found
that the hinged face will greatly restrict the players’ movement and the lid will
accommodate a large space while playing. After discussing with the group member, we
decided to use the idea of putting loop latch (figure 1.4) instead of butt hinge (idea credit to
Ng Yuheng). By installing 4 loop latches at the sides, the entire lid of the box can be lifted
and put aside. Besides, we decided to install two holders at both sides so the box can be
carried easily (figure 1.5). Besides, we nailed two strips of MDF board on the lid to make it
looks more like an army crate.
7. Instruction Booklet
Account by Darren
Although this task was assigned to me, I had ideas compiled from the other members. The
design was complicated as I personally wanted it to be based on a war themed basis. To
make it look like it’s based on a war theme, the rule book had to look like a case file, like the
ones secret agents would use to look at profiles or cases. Below are examples of how I
pictured the rule book to look like.
!
!
!
After taking into consideration about the shape of the file, I decided to get a normal pocket
file and yellow manila cards to get the shape right. Unfortunately, after trying to do so, the
pocket file ended being too flimsy and the colour would not have matched the war theme.
Shaking the file under sand and dirt to get that “old vintage feeling” made it worse.
Therefore, we decided to go with a semi hard board. Once we got it done, we slapped a
typical “Classified” sign onto the board and bent it. Our initial idea was to slap even more
signs onto the booklet, but then we realized that it would end up looking like a mail package
instead of a case file. To make sure it doesn’t bend back out, we bent it in between so that
the board evens out and does not bend backwards. The board is somewhat bendable but
at the same time, very solid. The result of the file is as shown below.
!
!
!
8. The initial idea for the pages of the rule book was to use very thin paper, shuffle them under
sand to make the pages look used and finally crumble them to make them look used.
Eventually, I figured it would look like trash if he did that instead. Therefore, I decided to get
tracing paper for the pages. Seen Yee suggested grey coloured paper, and so I included her
idea in as well. After putting both suggestions for a voting session among the other members,
my idea was chosen. As in my opinion, the reason why I chose tracing paper is because it
had that vintage feel, and it probably suited the War Theme better than almost any other
type of paper. It is thin and also somewhat durable, making it durable for its quality. Deciding
on the type of font used for the rules was another tricky task. I went on with Arial Black, but it
was too simple, and it had no relation to the type of font used in case files. After searching
through the types of fonts in the list, I finally found one that perfectly resembled the war
themed font. The font is called Courier New.
Example of the font (Courier New): Hello there! I like cats and potatoes.
!
!
!
Then, to hold the pages to the booklet, we decided to go with the old binders where ropes
were used to bind pages together.

9. Game Board
Account by Sharon
Following the design by Yee Ching, we decided to tie our game board with the military rustic
theme. Before we start, Yee Ching and I went shopping to buy all the materials needed such
as texture mat, paper clay and etc. Yee Ching designed the steps and layout so I helped her
to cut it out from the board. After finishing the cutting task for the entire afternoon, we
started our next task at Archi Studio with the help of our member, Yong Seen Yee. First, I
measured the precise width and length of the box to ensure that the board can fit exactly
into. Then I cut out the hardboard according to the previous measurement and glue the
textured mat on the board. We placed the 66 steps accordingly and glued it on using PVA
glue.

Then came the fun. We used the paper clay to shape mountains and ridges which will be
placed on the board later. While waiting it to dry, we design our landscape by placing
stones of different tones and textures and some self-rolled dry bushes around. After the paper
clay dried, Yee Ching painted it with poster colors using brushes and hands to give a few
touch of boldness. Lastly, we placed everything in the layout and secured it into the box and
completed our very first landscaped game board evocative of a barren arid desert.

11. Game Pieces
Account by Sharon
Most of the game pieces were bought from the stores such as dice, hour glass and soldier
pieces. I was the driver for the shopping trip to buy all the items with Yee Ching and Darren.
We just modified the big dice by sticking 6 paper dots of different color indicating the 6
bases in the game and blacken the ordinary dices’ facet number 6 to suit our agenda. For
the soldier pieces, we went to the shop Yuheng recommended but unfortunately the pieces
were out of stock. Luckily, they were willing to give us some of their extra pieces, so our
problem was solved.

Account by Yee Ching
For the game cards, I have to categorized the weapons, manpower, transportation for every
cards, points and tasks, etc. I jot down everything I thought of before I start designing the
template for the cards, Sharon and Seen Yee also helped me in thinking for the tasks and
categories for all the weapons, army, transportation, etc. Here is the notes we had made
before start off doing the template.

After all the tasks and categories of the cards are settled, I had the notes with me to start
designing the cards. Since I only know the basics for photoshop, I googled online to learn
how to control and use photoshop for futhur editing, I spent about 4 hours just studying
photoshop, it is totally not an easy task, then I started doing the template for the cards, our
board game is mainly about war, so I chose a vintage yellowish background for our cards,
and started putting in the weapons, drawing out every small detail, jotting down the points
and powers for every card and also the categories of the cards.

13. Designing the template was the most hectic time, it almost took me 6 hours just to draw out
the template for every cards, the small shield for the power and fire for the mark at the
bottom right already took me two and half hours drawing it, the borders and layers for the
cards are messing up. Since I am still a begginer, I need to recheck the tutoral video once I
missed the steps, and every cards are different, we need redo all the editing for every cards,
Yuen Xi and Sharon helped me in doing the descriptions and editing, if they were not helping
me to do the editing and descriptions, the work must be too stressful and hectic for me.
!
!
!
After 3 days editing, we finally completed and it is time print out all the cards to prepare for
the game testing.

Game Cards Description
!
!
Account by Yuen Xi
Each of us were given various different roles and jobs and I was asked to modify and edit the
cards that were going to be used for the board game. The task that was given to be was
fairly straightforward for me because I only need to create different description for each and
every cards as there were 3 types which were weapon, transportation and army. Each types
consist of different level and different function and it was my role to explain what it is.

Promo Video
!
!
Account by Yee Ching
When everything is well prepared, I started to records videos for our board game in order to
put it in our promo video, recording the videos are not easy since we had limited resources,
so I decided to do a trailer for our board game instead of spilling out all our board game
content, to make our board game more mysterious. Sharon and Seen Yee helped me with
the video recording and I did the futhur editing.
!
!
!
!
!
I chose the vintage yellowish background for the transitions in order to match the theme and
the cards, I also downloaded some of the secenes in world war 1 and 2 to include in the
video then futhur explain to world war 2.5 which make more sense going in ascending order.

17. REFLECTIONS
!

YEE CHING
Through this project, I had learned that cooperation between members
are really important in order to bring out a real board game, we need to
discuss every small detail and not to make any mistakes, if not, the whole
game will be ruined.
Besides, I also realize a lot of different board games all aroundthe world
which I had never seen and play before, throughout the process doing
researches, we found the ideas of the game new and refreshing, which
stands out among all the others.
World War 2.5 is not just a competitive game, it also helps you to think
about the strategy to win, makes your mind clear to focus on the game.
Time management are really important since we had a lot submissions
during that week, but for board game we already plan our part ahead
and start to do our job after the agreement of all the group members. I
also realized that advices we get from our lecturer weekly during tutorial
are really important since they can give us advices about the flow,
materials, stages, etc., of our games, these advices make our board
game getting better and better, getting lesser mistakes, going through a
lot of trial and error finally we completed our board game on time and
still having time for some final touch-ups.
!
During the whole process of making a new board game, we gain a lot
more knowledge and learn problem solving skills which is really important
for our future career, it is not an easy task but we really enjoyed it.

Throughout this whole project, I realized that the one main
component that is a virtue in this is team work. Second after
that is creativity. This project has helped me learn more on
accepting people’s ideas and opening up to them without
any rejection, as every idea is a contribution to success. It was
hard at first to take in some of the ideas proposed, but as time
passed, it gradually became simpler to take in ideas, thanks to
the bond that this project has formed in the team.
Being on time is also another aspect that can be learnt from
this project. Without time management, there will be nothing
but chaos in our project. There have been minor set backs on
our project which I did not expect, but with a little effort to fix
that, everything went smoothly in the end. After this project, I
have learnt how to appreciate time, and realized how it
affects everything and everyone that do or do not manage it
properly.
Simply speaking, this whole project has taught me many things.
It can be the simplest things, but still something worth learning
in the end. I am really lucky to be in a group with my group
members. Although we have had our differences in thoughts and ideas, we did our best to contribute
into this project.

Through this project, I have learned that teamwork, cooperation and communicating with each other
are the main keys to lead us success in our project. I am thankful that lecturer gave us a chance to do
this board game project; it was really enjoyable and fun. It is never easy to make a good board game
but we learned a lot through this process. Thank you for guiding us during this class.
!
This is the progress while we are doing our board game. This was the toughest task but it’s still very fun. I
could feel the satisfaction when we done it.

It is an unforgettable experience. Truly. There were moments of tensions,
depressions, conflicts, desperations but also laughers, joys, excitements
and contentment. We make mistakes and therefore we learn. I deeply
experienced the saying of holding hands building bridge, while helping
your brother to sail across the sea, lo, thine own had reached the shore.
Each of us is different, so therein be something I ought to learn from them.
Everyone needs help from everyone. Learn to listen and practice
acceptance is the thing I had learnt and still learning. Lastly, I would like
to convey my gratitude to my members for their effort in making this
project and their care for me.

I enjoy doing this project with me teammates and I have
learnt that it is important to work together as a teammate.
Helping each and other with another hand and being
cooperation with the other group members. Although we
can always meet up together to do the projects, but what
we did is we do it at home and compile everything
together. Besides that, I also learnt it is important to be
creative by creating a game. Therefore, by creating a
game and solving the problems such as while we playing
the board game, we have to make sure there are nothing
wrong in each steps. I felt contented as well for being able
to help out and finished this project with my group
members.
