Marijuana Should Be Legal For Medicinal Purposes
Marijuana Should Be Legal for Medicinal Purposes
You may be surprised, but there are many benefits to medical marijuana. Marijuana should only be legal for medicinal
conditions because of the benefits to treat diseases and symptoms. The medical conditions would be inflammation, brain
injury, etc... Marijuana should be legalized as it's been recommended by the doctor for the dosage because it is good for
other medical conditions such as chronic pain, brain injury, inflammation, and other symptoms. Marijuana contains
natural chemicals that can treat a certain amount of symptoms. Based on the ways that Medical Marijuana works, and
how it is useful for some circumstances, Marijuana should be legal for medicinal purposes.
To start with the following reasons, would be that Marijuana contains chemicals that can treat a range of illness. There are
over 400 natural compounds and eighty are found in Cannabis plants which can relieve symptoms. These eighty special
compounds are called "Cannabinoids ("United Patients Group", 2016). Also the law established standards that Marijuana
regulates practice mechanism to claim compensation in case of an injury (Picard, 2012). Without a doubt, Marijuana is
secreted by Cannabis flowers that can relieve an array of symptoms such as pain, nausea, inflammation, and many more
(Rahn, 2014). There are five major cannabinoids in Medical Marijuana that are particularly effective for relieving
symptoms of illnesses, and each one produces different

Argumentative Essay: The Medicinal Use Of Marijuana
The medicinal use of 'Marijuana' is a growing practice that is creeping its way into Australian culture and the current legal
system. As societal beliefs develop and change throughout time so too does the debate on medicinal Marijuana. So, do we
as the general society really want another drug to be decriminalized and brought into mainstream culture? Do we really
want our Government condoning the recreational usage of Marijuana? However, cannabis, when assessed for its
medicinal properties contains a cannabinoid known as 'CBD', which has been seen to possess healing qualities. While at
such an early untested, uncertified and unsteady time, is it time or is it too early to legalize 'marijuana' for medicinal
purposes? Society would yield multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a large debilitating effect upon mental, physical and emotional health, recreational marijuana is an extremely
controversial legal issue in the present era. With a high amount of vigilance for the detrimental health effects of
recreational usage, the study for the effect of medicinal use is left unknown. The current Queensland legislation states that
cannabis is a Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug and is therefore considered illicit. Currently the prevalence of cannabis is at an
alarming level and is rapidly entering into mainstream Australian culture. While the laws attempt to protect the citizens
from the harmful effects of drugs, they cannot hide the clear untested and unproven medical qualities that the drug
possesses. Without testing this substance and automatically governing it as a 'safe drug' is a way of condoning
recreational drug use to the younger generations. However, after close scientific analysis 'medical marijuana' should be
safely implemented into society. Why should we go through a rigorous process of amending the current legislation (Drugs
Misuse Act 1986 (QLD)) to provide society with something that is essentially toxic? However, society would yield
multiple benefits if marijuana were decriminalized for the sole purpose of medical use. Additionally, through outlawing
drugs such as tobacco and alcohol to

Medicinal Marijuana Should Be Decriminalized Essay
For the past fifty years, heated debates over the topic of the decriminalization of marijuana have been a great controversy
among politicians. Some politicians believe that marijuana for the use of medicine should be outlawed. As Congressman
Bob Barr in his debate with radio talk show host Neil Boortz on May 14, 2002, stated, "There is no legitimate
medical use whatsoever for marijuana. This [marijuana] is not medicine. This is bogus witchcraft. It has no place in
medicine, no place in pain relief, and it has no place around our children." However, this illicit drug can help the
terminally ill patient recover, or at least provide comfort from the persistent, overbearing suffering.

In the past few years, nine states have decriminalized the use of marijuana for medical intents. Actually, eleven states
have at one time allowed patients to use medicinal marijuana, but since two states have placed new laws banning the
usage of marijuana for any purpose. But by decriminalizing marijuana treatments, a broad gap has been created between
the federal laws and the new state laws. By decriminalizing marijuana prescriptions, the states have allowed patients to
use the drug. However that creates a problem. Although the state allows patients to handle marijuana for medicinal use,
patients have no way of obtaining it legally because the federal laws strictly prohibit anybody in the United States from
selling or purchasing drugs.
Even though many doctors and specialists believe that marijuana is beneficial to the medical world, there are still some
doctors who disagree. Opponents for the medicinal marijuana state that it similar to the Trojan horse incident. After
medicinal marijuana is legalize, they will try to make marijuana legal for pleasure. They say supporters utilize a deceptive
tactic of medicinal marijuana decriminalization who exploit the public's sympathy for seriously ill patients to legalize
marijuana. Competitor doctors complain that marijuana is not FDA approved, is ingested by smoking, is made up of
hundreds of different chemicals,

Does Marijuana Have Any Medicinal Uses?
This paper will cover some of the questions that many Americans' are asking, "Does marijuana have any medicinal
uses?", "What is the history of marijuana?", "What are Missouri's laws on Marijuana?", "Where marijuana legal in the
United States?" and a multitude of other questions that Americans' want to know. Not only from a medicinal standpoint,
but recreational as well. This is a very controversial topic that has been debated ever since it was illegal. The first of the
main points that we are focusing on is the medical use of marijuana. "Does marijuana have any medicinal uses?" Yes,
marijuana is linked to assisting patients that have AIDS, cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, and other

It doesn't end there, the only way to get help for your child is picking up everything you have and moving to a state that it
is legal in or illegally get your child medicine with the possibility of serving jail time, all just to hope that the medicine
will work and save your child. The part that makes me laugh every time is the people that are saying that you should find
other means to help your child, but will be the same people who fight against abortion. Not saying that these are the same,
which they are not, but in the sense that you could help save a child 's life, who has no power to say or do anything about
their situation, but instead letting them sit there and have seizures because their medicine is related to marijuana. The
point I am trying to make is that no one should ever be denied the access to a medicine, no matter what it is. The second
part is based around the history of marijuana. In 1850 marijuana was commonly used in the Unites States to help with
various illnesses such as, tetanus, cholera, rabies, alcoholism, opiate addiction, anthrax, leprosy, insanity, and excessive
menstrual bleeding. (Boire and Feeney, 2007) January 1915 President of the United States Woodrow Wilson signed three
documents that would be the future outline for drug legislation. These documents were created by Francis

Argumentative Essay On Medicinal Marijuana
Medicinal Marijuana One of the most controversial topics in the United States is the subject of drug use. As scientific
research develops, society has become more understanding of the positive uses for drugs such as marijuana. Marijuana
has been the source of major stigmatism in recent memory. Despite the stigma surrounding the subject, marijuana has
proven beneficial in terms of state revenue and medicinal relief and should be legalized across all 50 states. The
movement to legalize medicinal marijuana began around 1996. Since this time, over half of the states in the United States
have adopted laws in support of medicinal marijuana. Although medicinal marijuana legalization is beginning to gain
traction on the state level, the federal level has yet to make an all–encompassing law to solidify its legalization throughout
the nation. Without the validation from the federal government, ambiguity behind the subject of medicinal marijuana is
sure to continue (Ryan, Jennie, and Nancy Sharts–Hopko). Furthermore, stigmatization behind the subject has made it
increasingly difficult to continue legalization throughout the United States. The stigma behind medicinal marijuana could
lie within the confines of labels. Users of marijuana are typically "labeled a 'pothead' or 'stoner'" (Ryan, Jennie, and
Nancy Sharts–Hopko). These labels carry a negative connotation that might sway different people's opinions. The
opinions of lawmakers and lobbyists are important when it comes to

Medicinal Marijuana Should Not Be Banned
"Medicinal marijuana does more harm to our society than it does good." This is a common misconception from those who
oppose medicinal marijuana, and are ill informed of the practical uses. In this day and age there are many advances in
medicine, and ways to treat and even cure some diseases or disorders. But due to the bad stigma that surrounds marijuana,
there are people who refuse to acknowledge possibilities of medicinal properties. In this paper I will give examples of a
few major breakthroughs that medicinal marijuana has achieved in the previous years that prove marijuana can be
suitable to use as a medicine. Due to the amount of negativity in the news towards marijuana, many people have not
received proper information about the possibilities marijuana offers for medicinal use. A lot of the news that people read
or watch tend to be tainted with biased opinions, and will rarely contain the full truth. "And over the past decade I, too,
have grown tired of hearing scientists detail drug–related negative effects, always warning of the possible neurological
and psychiatric dangers users face, while virtually ignoring recreational drugs' potential medicinal or beneficial effects"
(Hart, 2014). Dr. Carl L. Hart explains that people are always quick to give negative connotations about marijuana in
general, without even bothering to recognize any positive effects it may have. If the news continues to show only one side
of an argument, how are people supposed to see the whole

The Use Of Marijuana For Medicinal Purposes
Some people have been in the same situation at a party where they see a group gathering outside. The smell of the strange
herb along with kids laughing and talking as they take turns passing and hitting a bowl or a joint is now common. Then
those kids would turn around and ask the others the same dreaded question "Do you want a hit?" Maybe some say yes,
maybe they say no, maybe they smoke every day, maybe they never will, or maybe they have to if they want to live.

To control the side effects, prevention must be strong and the progress should be tracked. Furthermore, Pew Research
Center tracked the increasing support for marijuana and reached a conclusion where "today, 57% of U.S. adults say the
use of marijuana should be made legal, while 37% say it should be illegal. A decade ago, opinion on legalizing marijuana
was nearly the reverse...." (Geiger). People have realized the benefits of this drug in medication and today there are 28
legal medical marijuana states including Washington, DC. The plant can cure numerous diseases including AIDS/ HIV,
Alzheimer's, Arthritis, Asthma, Cancer, Chronic Pain, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, Multiple Sclerosis, and can help fight basic
body pain too. Among the various species of marijuana, the two most commonly used for medicine are Cannabis sativa

sense of relaxation or lethargy. (Ammerman et al.) Christine Vestal covers health care for Stateline and wrote an article in

Summary: Medicinal Marijuana In Australia
The Australian government disputed new national laws on February 2018 paving the way for the use of medicinal
marijuana by people with harmful and chronic illness. Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act permit legally–grown
cannabis for the manufacturing of medicinal cannabis products in Australia like edibles or products that produce a high (
ABC 2017).
Under the new federal act, patients with a authentic medical prescription can possess and use medicinal cannabis products
manufactured from cannabis legally cultivated in Australia by the government, provided the supply of marijuana has been
authorised under the Therapeutic Goods Act and relevant state and territory legislation ( Thomsen 2016 ). The changes

Although medical marijuana programs face several complications, the benefits offered by medical marijuana and the
positive impact this drug could have on the lives of thousands of patients and their families make a strong case for its
consideration ( Russo 2008). The potential disadvantages can be minimised or even overcome through a number of
measures, including the close medical supervision, education and monitoring of patients, and the creation of suitable
infrastructure (e.g., medical marijuana dispensaries) and the creation of laws and policies that are not only sympathetic of
medical marijuana patients but will also, minimise the risk the drug poses to the public ( Russo 2008). Individuals who
live with chronic pain, whether it be physical or emotional, it's important to contemplate the treatment options carefully.
Doctors frequently over prescribe pain pills, which could result in physical dependence and chronic, life–threatening side
effects ( ABC 2017). While many doctors may be quick to dismiss a request for a medical marijuana prescription, you can
often get one on site at a medical marijuana dispensary or be assessed at a medical marijuana evaluation centre ( ABC

In recent years, several states such as California have passed laws that make it legal to use marijuana for medicinal
purposes. Legal changes about the medicinal use of marijuana have been accompanied by vigorous debate. Advocates
tout that marijuana has allowed new avenues to mitigate medical problems such as anxiety, depression and Alzheimer.
However, Opponents argue that marijuana does more harm than good, is mainly used recreationally instead of their
intended purposes. Not to mention, marijuana is classified as a drug and is illegal according to the United States
government. Before a conclusion can be made about whether or not marijuana should be legal for medical purposes,
extensive examination of the benefits of marijuana is necessary. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are side effects but every drug is accompanied with a slew of side effects. Several drug commercials have a part in
the commercial were 15 to 30 side effects are quickly listed off. Therefore, the potential side effects shouldn't be a
hindrance to use. The scope of which patients are eligible to use it should be very narrow and only used for treatment in
categories that saw a statistical significance from the control group. So according to Dr. Whiting study, medicinal
marijuana would be use to combat chronic pain, nausea anxiety and sleep disorders. From being around family members
who wake up, battle constant pain every day and wake up a do the same thing the next day, I can tell you if there's
anything that could help relieve this constant pain from even an hour and won't kill, my cousin would gladly take this
medication. With that being said, medicinal marijuana could be abused so there needs to be a solid overseeing
organization over the administering of marijuana. Doctors could help numerous people with the use of medicinal

Marijuana popularly known as cannabis can also be used in the treatment of several ailments apart from its misuse. There
are several differences that have been marked with the knowledge pertaining the medical consumption of cannabinoids
and cannabis in a variety of sicknesses. For vomiting and nausea that is associated with chemotherapy of cancer, cachexia
in HIV, anorexia, chronic, spasticity in numerous sclerosis and injury of the spinal cord are strong evidences of the
medicinal benefits of the plant. For several indications, like pruritus, epilepsy and depression, there is lesser data on the

Joycelyn Elders, former Surgeon General, once spoke about the legalization of marijuana for medical use in a press
conference. "It's criminal to keep this medicine from patients," she said (Silverman, 1995, pg. 2). She received criticism
not only from many citizens of the United States, but also strong criticism from the President who appointed her. The
legalization of marijuana for medical use has always been a sharply debated subject, and many of the debaters are
uneducated about the effects of using this illegal drug for therapeutic use. Many studies have been done and the results

"It is very disturbing to realize that Giovanni Polli (1812–1880), was more compassionate 130 years ago than many
government authorities today" (Kassirer, 1997, pg. 1185). The debates began and in 1975, the FDA established the
Compassionate Use program for medical marijuana (Silverman, 1995). Marijuana is a DEA Schedule I in all forms (hash,
hash oil, and cannabis) except for synthetic THC, which is schedule III. Schedule I is federally defined as drugs which
have a high potential for abuse, have no currently accepted medical use in treatment, and have a lack of accepted safety
for use of the drug under medical supervision. This federal law was disputed in 1988 by Judge Francis Young, an
administrative law judge for the DEA, who recommended that marijuana be reclassified as schedule II on the grounds
that if a respectable minority of doctors indorse it, then it has a "currently accepted medical use" (Erowid website, 2000).
In 1990, the states of California and Arizona came to their senses and allowed marijuana to be legalized just for medical
purposes (Silverman, 1995). A few years later, Missouri and Michigan also legalized medicinal marijuana. As of today, no
additional states have decided to follow their lead.

access medicinal cannabis." In spite of this forward move, the debate still rages. There are valid and significant stances
about whether marijuana should be legalised for medicinal purposes. Marijuana, better known as "cannabis", is a

Advocates for medicinal marijuana argue that clinical tests have established that marijuana has definite and valid
therapeutic values. It is the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana that is the active chemical component for the relief
o pain and symptoms. Marijuana suppresses AIDS–related nausea and nausea in patients undergoing cancer
chemotherapy, along with appetite loss and abnormal pressure in the eye which leads to glaucoma, the #1 cause of
blindness. Marijuana is also believed to be a safe and inexpensive alternative in treating muscle spasms, epilepsy,
anorexia, asthma, insomnia, depression and other disorders. Marijuana is not only believed to help with physical ailments,
but psychological ones as well. A former chairman of the 1991 established Office of Alternative Medicine's (OAM)
Program Advisory Council said, "When used appropriately, marijuana could be extremely helpful to people undergoing
certain kinds of emotional crises."
Then there is the opposition who says that there is still no consensus that confirms marijuana as a legitimate medicinal

The many tales and legends surrounding the medical use of marijuana can be traced as far back to the ancient Chinese
and Greek civilizations, who both believed that on top of its psychoactive capabilities, marijuana was effective in treating
pain. Several thousand years later, Queen Victoria was urged by her doctor to take marijuana in order to relieve such
pains as migraines or menstrual cramps. However, despite the many historical anecdotes regarding marijuana's medicinal

supporters of legalization present the fact that previous to the IOM studies, the last tests done on marijuana were in the

The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes has long been at the centre of much controversy. Some studies have shown
results that the benefits of using marijuana for medicinal reasons far outweigh the negative health matters that may be
associated with its use, and therefore should be an accepted method of treatment for some patients who are suffering with
illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, AIDS, and eating disorders (Okie, 2005). Still, other studies have proven that
there is not enough scientific evidence on the drug, there for it should not be legalized for the use of medication

The Chemical breakdown of cannabis, which marijuana is a herbal product of, contains many components that prove
beneficial in the medical field. Parts of the medical field that these components benefit would include various
neurological conditions, such as spasticity, pain or sleeping disorders. It is currently difficult to conclude whether these
benefits overpower the risks that a person with a neurological disorder would be taking. However Canadian surveys have
showed that in two neurological disorder cases, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, cannabis has proven to be beneficial to
symptom relief. People with these disorders using cannabis have gotten relief from both their primary symptoms and
other symptoms associated with their disorders. In people with epilepsy, the severity and frequency of their seizures was
reduced. In people with multiple sclerosis were found to have reduced pain and spasticity, as well as being relived from
psychological symptoms caused by the disorder. Without the use of cannabis in some users, they would have a much

we hardly consider the role our state government has in our lives and legislations here at home. In many ways, the state

federal government still provides a bit of extra stress to the citizens of Colorado. This can be an issue for citizens because
they are presented with opposing sides claiming "facts". This is also complicated because the since marijuana is illegal

The Pros And Cons Of Medicinal Marijuana
Introduction Medicinal marijuana is one of many ethical issues that are encountered in the medical field. According to
National Institutes of Health Medicinal marijuana is a "cannabis plant that contains the mind–altering chemical delta–9–
tetrahydrocannabino (THC) and other similar compounds such as cannabidiol (CBD). THC and CBD are the two most
important ingredients in medical marijuana. Both THC and CBD have synergistic effects, but THC has the psychoactive
compounds which alters the mind" (NIH, 2017). Now legal in 29 states, it is being used for medical purposes such as
alleviate pain, reduce seizures, and appetite stimulation. There are controversies regarding the effects of using this drug
such as hallucination, intoxication, or dependence. Although there are benefits for its medical use, there are also risks
involved just like in any drug. The decision is up to the individual regarding its uses. Pros There are health benefits for
the use of the drug. Medicinal marijuana can help alleviate symptoms of cancer such as nausea and pain. There are animal
studies that show that marijuana extracts may help kill cancer cells and slow growth of malignant cancer (NIH, 2017). It
can help stimulate the appetite for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patient, which may help improve food

Lester Grinspoon, M.D., the Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School states that although cannabis is
not entirely harmless, it is a safe drug. He also says that it is less toxic than the other conventional drugs that it would
replace if it were legalized. In the history of its use it has never caused an overdose death. Cannabis would be one of the
least toxic and addictive medicines in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia if rescheduled and legalized for medical use. Patients
would not have to deal with the anxiety and expense that they deal with now. Cannabis would be at least 100 times less
expensive than current medicines that perform the same treatment. Dr. Grinspoon also states that the most serious concern
would be respiratory damage from smoking. The particulate matter in the smoke could be separated from the active
ingredients, the cannabinoids to reduce the risk. Prohibition has prevented this technology from happening (Lester
Grinspoon, 1997).

Using Marijuana for Medicinal Purposes
In todays society marijuana is a very controversial topic in America. There has been some horrible remarks towards
cannabis in the past but the truth is finally starting to come out. People think of marijuana as a substance just to get "high"
with but there are other good outcomes towards cannabis that can make this world a better place. As a marijuana support I
believe marijuana should be used for all purposes. Using marijuana for medicinal purposes was not recently discovered.
According to riversideonline.com people have been using marijuana for pain relief since the 1800s. In fact, the THC that
is in cannabis can work well in treating cancer pain as codeine, a mild pain reliever.
The biggest argument people use against marijuana is that they claim it is a gateway drug. People say people who use
marijuana would later use harder drugs such as cocaine, meth, and heroin which is irrelevant.Just because some people that
do harder drugs such as the 3 I named started off with using marijuana does not mean all people would do the harder
drugs. If someone wanted to experiment with cocaine, meth,or heroin they are going to do it regardless. If anything the
gateway drugs that are leading people to cocaine, meth, or heroin are cigarettes and alcohol. How many people do you
think tried smoking a cigarette or drinking a beer before smoking marijuana. Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol is
much more harmful to the body than consuming marijuana which is a plant. People call marijuana

The Medicinal Uses of Marijuana Essay examples
Marijuana as medicine has been studied for many years. In some cultures, it is already used as medicine, and it stems
back from many generations. There are many good uses for marijuana to be used as medicine which will be discussed in
following paragraphs. The problem is that in order to be used in America as medicine, marijuana must be legalized.
Marijuana has a long history of medical use. It is one of the oldest living plants and, in ancient times, was used as various
forms of medicine through ingestion of the plant. The first recorded use of marijuana as medicine was in China. It was

One question is the effectiveness of THC to reduce nausea in chemotherapy patients. Because cancer is on the rise, there
are more and more people using chemotherapy as treatment in America. Right now, there are many different types of
chemotherapy drugs, and they all have the same side effects. Some are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation,
dyspepsia, heart burn, and ulceration. These are only the gastrointestinal effects. There are hair effects, skin effects, and
muscle and nerve effects to these drugs. Drugs administered to treat the side effects of nausea, and vomiting are mostly
ineffective. However, there are reports that state that THC, taken in a capsule or in a cigarette, does reduce nausea and
vomiting. The controversy is that some patients experienced hallucinations while taking the drug. The hallucinations were
experienced perhaps because too much of the drug was taken at one time. The question that is brought up is How much is
an effective dose? First, the way the drug is taken varies on the individual. Some people react differently to all kinds of
drugs taken orally.
After deciding on how the patient should orally take the drug, the person administering the drug must keep in mind other
considerations. First, the drug must be given early enough to prevent anticipatory vomiting. This is a well known
phenomenon in cancer patients. That is chemotherapy patients expect to vomit and in anticipation of it,

speculated across all states of Australia after seeing the benefits for those suffering from a number of chronic illnesses.
South Australia, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory have taken the first steps towards legalising the use of
Marijuana for strictly medicinal purposes only by decriminalising the minor marijuana offences which means if the
amount of marijuana recognised by each state is of a 'small amount' then it will be treated as a civil wrong with a minor
penalty such as a fine or drug rehabilitation program. However this does not mean it is legal to use, it's just a minor slap

The popularity of marijuana as a recreational drug, there is always the risk of wide scale drug diversion occurring which
means people without a prescription for marijuana gaining access to the drug for purposes other than medicinal use.
Marijuana affects the brain and can cause feelings of disorientation, altered visual perception, hallucinations, sleepiness,
and poorer psychomotor control (Ashton Churchill, 2007) It has also been shown that drivers using Marijuana had about
three to seven times the risk of being in a motor car collision than drivers who were not using marijuana (John
Ramaekers, 2009) Pedestrians and cyclists who are prescribed marijuana are also at higher risks of being injured in a
collision. Generally speaking a study showed marijuana use was associated with an increased risk of injuries from causes
such as falls, lacerations, and burns (Simon Gerberich, 2013) Hence the legalisation of medical marijuana not only poses
a risk to the personal safety of the patient but also to the physical safety of the wider

Medicinal Marijuana is Bad Idea Essay
Marijuana is a psychoactive drug made from the dried leaves and flowering parts of the hemp plant. It is one of the most
strictly classified illegal drugs in the United States. Under the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, marijuana is listed as a
Schedule I substance, which defines it as having 'a high potential for abuse'; and 'no currently accepted medical use.';
Marijuana is therefore classified more severely than cocaine and morphine, which as Schedule II drugs are also banned
for general use, but can be prescribed by doctors. It is illegal to buy, sell, grow, or possess marijuana in the United States.

In addition, marijuana opponents argue that many users attain a psychological dependence on the 'high'; that marijuana
can create. Such dependence can result in stunned emotional and social maturity as these users lose interest in school, job,
and social activities. About 100,000 people each year resort to drug abuse treatment programs to end their marijuana
addiction. Marijuana is also viewed by some commentators as a 'gateway'; drug that can lead to the abuse of other
dangerous and illegal substances, including cocaine and heroin On the other hand, critics of U.S marijuana policy argue
that the dangers of marijuana have been exaggerated. They contend that many, not most, users of marijuana suffer no
lasting harm, do not move onto other drugs, ad do not become addicts. Some surveys on marijuana use in America have
shown that nine out of ten people who have tried marijuana have since quit. Researchers working with rats have found
that marijuana is a far less addictive substance for the animals than cocaine or heroin Pro–Legalization activist R. Keith
Stroup summed up the views of many who oppose marijuana prohibition when he asserted before a committee that
'moderate marijuana use is relatively harmless–far less harmless than that of either tobacco or alcohol.'; Whether or not
marijuana, as a Schedule I drug, truly has 'no currently accepted medical use'; is also a matter of public controversy. In

Why We Should Legalize Medicinal Marijuana
Many people have differing views when discussing the legality of medicinal marijuana. Some say the drug should not be
turned over to the public via prescription because it is too harmful. These people, however, have not considered all the
advantageous potential that legalization will aid in the state of Tennessee. The great state of Tennessee should legalize
medicinal marijuana because it is a great painkiller, it is not addictive like other prescription Pharmaceuticals, and
because government intervention would aid in marijuana's safe distribution to the public. It is hard to imagine the day–to–
day pain that a cancer patient endures, but one can imagine that any type of relief would be invited from the victim and
their families. These poor individuals suffer throughout the day, and unfortunately are in so much discomfort that
attempting to live an ordinary life is virtually impossible. Providing people in these conditions with something that will
help is almost a no brainer to people looking from the outside in. This is where marijuana can be an effective substitute
for the treatments they are already taking. On this drug, many of those going through unbearable pain can function, and
begin to appreciate life as they might have before the pain began. For many patients, when given the option, choosing

they would now have cheaper prescription options. While this may not be the outlook those whom oppose would prefer,

damage that can occur from smoking the plant. The Institute of Medicine addressed this argument in the report,

effects. However, except for the harm associated with smoking, the adverse effects of marijuana use are within the range

Physicians recognized marijuana for medicinal use as early as 1840. It appeared in the Nation's official list of acceptable
drug from 1850 through 1942 in the United States Pharmacopoeia. It was sold in small packages for the treatment of
migraines, rheumatism, and insomnia. (Anslinger) However, today, many individuals are left to choose between feeling
better and breaking the law. More than twenty states have legalized the use and/or cultivation of marijuana for medicinal
use, thereby removing any criminal penalties from the doctor who prescribe the drug and the patients who use it within
the bounds set by state laws. As with any drug, one of the biggest dilemmas in legalizing marijuana is the potential for
abuse and addiction. For this reason, under the federal Controlled Substances Act, it is classified as a "Schedule I drug".

Arguably, medicinal marijuana has proven to be most effective for the relief of nausea and anorexia associated with
cancer and AIDS/HIV treatments. For cancer patients who not only go through the unimaginable pains and discomforts of
the disease itself but also the process of treatment through chemotherapy, the option of using marijuana may prove to be
helpful in relief of the symptoms. In an article published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Kate Scannell, M.D. wrote
"From working with AIDS and cancer patients, I repeatedly saw how marijuana could ameliorate a patient's debilitating
fatigue, restore appetite, diminish pain, remedy nausea, cure vomiting and curtail down–to–the–bone weight loss" ("Do").
Dr. Scannell concluded by claiming "...almost every sick and dying patient I've ever known who's tried medical marijuana

brings relief by easing the pain and suffering of just one patient, isn't that enough reason to legalize its use for medicinal

heroes constantly in rehab for developing an out of control dependency. Over time the body begins to crave the drug.
Once cut off from it there are possibilities for depression, and even withdrawal symptoms. Some patients do not
biologically react well to certain drugs. Reactions of nausea, diarrhea, flu–like symptoms, muscle pain, blurred vision,
and allergic reaction are all common occurrences. Advil causes hundreds of deaths each year yet no one overdoses from
cannabis. While the government picks away at the diminutive consequences of marijuana use, there is a whole laundry
list full of things that can go wrong when using a legal prescription.
Those against medicinal marijuana argue many claims which could be used to argue the risks of over the counter drugs.
While the DEA states "Users can become dependant on marijuana to the point they must seek treatment to stop abusing
it." the same can be easily said about any painkiller medication. They go on to say, "In 1999, more than 200,000
Americans entered substance abuse treatment primarily for marijuana abuse and dependence." Many of those enrolled
into those programs are forced to because it is apart of their

Marijuana Should Be Legal For Medicinal Purposes

  • 1. Marijuana Should Be Legal For Medicinal Purposes Marijuana Should Be Legal for Medicinal Purposes You may be surprised, but there are many benefits to medical marijuana. Marijuana should only be legal for medicinal conditions because of the benefits to treat diseases and symptoms. The medical conditions would be inflammation, brain injury, etc... Marijuana should be legalized as it's been recommended by the doctor for the dosage because it is good for other medical conditions such as chronic pain, brain injury, inflammation, and other symptoms. Marijuana contains natural chemicals that can treat a certain amount of symptoms. Based on the ways that Medical Marijuana works, and how it is useful for some circumstances, Marijuana should be legal for medicinal purposes. To start with the following reasons, would be that Marijuana contains chemicals that can treat a range of illness. There are over 400 natural compounds and eighty are found in Cannabis plants which can relieve symptoms. These eighty special compounds are called "Cannabinoids ("United Patients Group", 2016). Also the law established standards that Marijuana regulates practice mechanism to claim compensation in case of an injury (Picard, 2012). Without a doubt, Marijuana is secreted by Cannabis flowers that can relieve an array of symptoms such as pain, nausea, inflammation, and many more (Rahn, 2014). There are five major cannabinoids in Medical Marijuana that are particularly effective for relieving symptoms of illnesses, and each one produces different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Argumentative Essay: The Medicinal Use Of Marijuana The medicinal use of 'Marijuana' is a growing practice that is creeping its way into Australian culture and the current legal system. As societal beliefs develop and change throughout time so too does the debate on medicinal Marijuana. So, do we as the general society really want another drug to be decriminalized and brought into mainstream culture? Do we really want our Government condoning the recreational usage of Marijuana? However, cannabis, when assessed for its medicinal properties contains a cannabinoid known as 'CBD', which has been seen to possess healing qualities. While at such an early untested, uncertified and unsteady time, is it time or is it too early to legalize 'marijuana' for medicinal purposes? Society would yield multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a large debilitating effect upon mental, physical and emotional health, recreational marijuana is an extremely controversial legal issue in the present era. With a high amount of vigilance for the detrimental health effects of recreational usage, the study for the effect of medicinal use is left unknown. The current Queensland legislation states that cannabis is a Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug and is therefore considered illicit. Currently the prevalence of cannabis is at an alarming level and is rapidly entering into mainstream Australian culture. While the laws attempt to protect the citizens from the harmful effects of drugs, they cannot hide the clear untested and unproven medical qualities that the drug possesses. Without testing this substance and automatically governing it as a 'safe drug' is a way of condoning recreational drug use to the younger generations. However, after close scientific analysis 'medical marijuana' should be safely implemented into society. Why should we go through a rigorous process of amending the current legislation (Drugs Misuse Act 1986 (QLD)) to provide society with something that is essentially toxic? However, society would yield multiple benefits if marijuana were decriminalized for the sole purpose of medical use. Additionally, through outlawing drugs such as tobacco and alcohol to ... • 3. Medicinal Marijuana Should Be Decriminalized Essay For the past fifty years, heated debates over the topic of the decriminalization of marijuana have been a great controversy among politicians. Some politicians believe that marijuana for the use of medicine should be outlawed. As Congressman Bob Barr in his debate with radio talk show host Neil Boortz on May 14, 2002, stated, "There is no legitimate medical use whatsoever for marijuana. This [marijuana] is not medicine. This is bogus witchcraft. It has no place in medicine, no place in pain relief, and it has no place around our children." However, this illicit drug can help the terminally ill patient recover, or at least provide comfort from the persistent, overbearing suffering. Continuing Medical Education, Inc., posted in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the past few years, nine states have decriminalized the use of marijuana for medical intents. Actually, eleven states have at one time allowed patients to use medicinal marijuana, but since two states have placed new laws banning the usage of marijuana for any purpose. But by decriminalizing marijuana treatments, a broad gap has been created between the federal laws and the new state laws. By decriminalizing marijuana prescriptions, the states have allowed patients to use the drug. However that creates a problem. Although the state allows patients to handle marijuana for medicinal use, patients have no way of obtaining it legally because the federal laws strictly prohibit anybody in the United States from selling or purchasing drugs. Even though many doctors and specialists believe that marijuana is beneficial to the medical world, there are still some doctors who disagree. Opponents for the medicinal marijuana state that it similar to the Trojan horse incident. After medicinal marijuana is legalize, they will try to make marijuana legal for pleasure. They say supporters utilize a deceptive tactic of medicinal marijuana decriminalization who exploit the public's sympathy for seriously ill patients to legalize marijuana. Competitor doctors complain that marijuana is not FDA approved, is ingested by smoking, is made up of hundreds of different chemicals, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Does Marijuana Have Any Medicinal Uses? This paper will cover some of the questions that many Americans' are asking, "Does marijuana have any medicinal uses?", "What is the history of marijuana?", "What are Missouri's laws on Marijuana?", "Where marijuana legal in the United States?" and a multitude of other questions that Americans' want to know. Not only from a medicinal standpoint, but recreational as well. This is a very controversial topic that has been debated ever since it was illegal. The first of the main points that we are focusing on is the medical use of marijuana. "Does marijuana have any medicinal uses?" Yes, marijuana is linked to assisting patients that have AIDS, cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, and other conditions. Some will say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It doesn't end there, the only way to get help for your child is picking up everything you have and moving to a state that it is legal in or illegally get your child medicine with the possibility of serving jail time, all just to hope that the medicine will work and save your child. The part that makes me laugh every time is the people that are saying that you should find other means to help your child, but will be the same people who fight against abortion. Not saying that these are the same, which they are not, but in the sense that you could help save a child 's life, who has no power to say or do anything about their situation, but instead letting them sit there and have seizures because their medicine is related to marijuana. The point I am trying to make is that no one should ever be denied the access to a medicine, no matter what it is. The second part is based around the history of marijuana. In 1850 marijuana was commonly used in the Unites States to help with various illnesses such as, tetanus, cholera, rabies, alcoholism, opiate addiction, anthrax, leprosy, insanity, and excessive menstrual bleeding. (Boire and Feeney, 2007) January 1915 President of the United States Woodrow Wilson signed three documents that would be the future outline for drug legislation. • 5. Argumentative Essay On Medicinal Marijuana Medicinal Marijuana One of the most controversial topics in the United States is the subject of drug use. As scientific research develops, society has become more understanding of the positive uses for drugs such as marijuana. Marijuana has been the source of major stigmatism in recent memory. Despite the stigma surrounding the subject, marijuana has proven beneficial in terms of state revenue and medicinal relief and should be legalized across all 50 states. The movement to legalize medicinal marijuana began around 1996. Since this time, over half of the states in the United States have adopted laws in support of medicinal marijuana. Although medicinal marijuana legalization is beginning to gain traction on the state level, the federal level has yet to make an all–encompassing law to solidify its legalization throughout the nation. Without the validation from the federal government, ambiguity behind the subject of medicinal marijuana is sure to continue (Ryan, Jennie, and Nancy Sharts–Hopko). Furthermore, stigmatization behind the subject has made it increasingly difficult to continue legalization throughout the United States. The stigma behind medicinal marijuana could lie within the confines of labels. Users of marijuana are typically "labeled a 'pothead' or 'stoner'" (Ryan, Jennie, and Nancy Sharts–Hopko). These labels carry a negative connotation that might sway different people's opinions. The opinions of lawmakers and lobbyists are important when it comes to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Medicinal Marijuana Should Not Be Banned "Medicinal marijuana does more harm to our society than it does good." This is a common misconception from those who oppose medicinal marijuana, and are ill informed of the practical uses. In this day and age there are many advances in medicine, and ways to treat and even cure some diseases or disorders. But due to the bad stigma that surrounds marijuana, there are people who refuse to acknowledge possibilities of medicinal properties. In this paper I will give examples of a few major breakthroughs that medicinal marijuana has achieved in the previous years that prove marijuana can be suitable to use as a medicine. Due to the amount of negativity in the news towards marijuana, many people have not received proper information about the possibilities marijuana offers for medicinal use. A lot of the news that people read or watch tend to be tainted with biased opinions, and will rarely contain the full truth. "And over the past decade I, too, have grown tired of hearing scientists detail drug–related negative effects, always warning of the possible neurological and psychiatric dangers users face, while virtually ignoring recreational drugs' potential medicinal or beneficial effects" (Hart, 2014). Dr. Carl L. Hart explains that people are always quick to give negative connotations about marijuana in general, without even bothering to recognize any positive effects it may have. • 7. The Use Of Marijuana For Medicinal Purposes Some people have been in the same situation at a party where they see a group gathering outside. The smell of the strange herb along with kids laughing and talking as they take turns passing and hitting a bowl or a joint is now common. Then those kids would turn around and ask the others the same dreaded question "Do you want a hit?" Maybe some say yes, maybe they say no, maybe they smoke every day, maybe they never will, or maybe they have to if they want to live. Adolescents and adults have access to marijuana as it is easily available behind the scenes these days and it's about time everybody knows the truth about the uses, effects, purposes, and cures about the devil's harvest– Marijuana. Furthermore, Pew Research Center tracked the increasing support for marijuana and reached a conclusion where "today, 57% of U.S. adults say the use of marijuana should be made legal, while 37% say it should be illegal. A decade ago, opinion on legalizing marijuana was nearly the reverse...." (Geiger). People have realized the benefits of this drug in medication and today there are 28 legal medical marijuana states including Washington, DC. The plant can cure numerous diseases including AIDS/ HIV, Alzheimer's, Arthritis, Asthma, Cancer, Chronic Pain, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, Multiple Sclerosis, and can help fight basic body pain too. Among the various species of marijuana, the two most commonly used for medicine are Cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. The former causes increased alertness and an energetic sense, and the latter is reported to cause a sense of relaxation or lethargy. (Ammerman et al.) Christine Vestal covers health care for Stateline and wrote an article in The Washington Post to treat chronic pain and states that "Nationwide, an estimated 1.4 million patients in 28 states and the District of Columbia use legal medical marijuana for a varying list of conditions. Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act permit legally–grown cannabis for the manufacturing of medicinal cannabis products in Australia like edibles or products that produce a high ( ABC 2017). Under the new federal act, patients with a authentic medical prescription can possess and use medicinal cannabis products manufactured from cannabis legally cultivated in Australia by the government, provided the supply of marijuana has been authorised under the Therapeutic Goods Act and relevant state and territory legislation ( Thomsen 2016 ). This federal law was disputed in 1988 by Judge Francis Young, an administrative law judge for the DEA, who recommended that marijuana be reclassified as schedule II on the grounds that if a respectable minority of doctors indorse it, then it has a "currently accepted medical use" (Erowid website, 2000). In 1990, the states of California and Arizona came to their senses and allowed marijuana to be legalized just for medical purposes (Silverman, 1995). It is one of the most strictly classified illegal drugs in the United States. Under the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I substance, which defines it as having 'a high potential for abuse'; and 'no currently accepted medical use.'; Marijuana is therefore classified more severely than cocaine and morphine, which as Schedule II drugs are also banned for general use, but can be prescribed by doctors. Such dependence can result in stunned emotional and social maturity as these users lose interest in school, job, and social activities. About 100,000 people each year resort to drug abuse treatment programs to end their marijuana addiction. Marijuana is also viewed by some commentators as a 'gateway'; drug that can lead to the abuse of other dangerous and illegal substances, including cocaine and heroin On the other hand, critics of U.S marijuana policy argue that the dangers of marijuana have been exaggerated. They contend that many, not most, users of marijuana suffer no lasting harm, do not move onto other drugs, ad do not become addicts. Some surveys on marijuana use in America have shown that nine out of ten people who have tried marijuana have since quit. Researchers working with rats have found that marijuana is a far less addictive substance for the animals than cocaine or heroin Pro–Legalization activist R. Keith Stroup summed up the views of many who oppose marijuana prohibition when he asserted before a committee that 'moderate marijuana use is relatively harmless–far less harmless than that of either tobacco or alcohol.'; Whether or not marijuana, as a Schedule I drug, truly has 'no currently accepted medical use'; is also a matter of public controversy. • 30. Why We Should Legalize Medicinal Marijuana Many people have differing views when discussing the legality of medicinal marijuana. Some say the drug should not be turned over to the public via prescription because it is too harmful. The great state of Tennessee should legalize medicinal marijuana because it is a great painkiller, it is not addictive like other prescription Pharmaceuticals, and because government intervention would aid in marijuana's safe distribution to the public. However, except for the harm associated with smoking, the adverse effects of marijuana use are within the range tolerated for other medications. Thus, the safety issues associated with marijuana do not preclude some medical uses." (126). The idea that the earth revolved around the sun inherently brought controversy upon the traditional styles of science. A controversy our leaders need to examine is the medical use of marijuana. Instead of banning marijuana and ignoring the public voice, our representatives need to examine the facts and effects of marijuana for medical use. The choice to use harsher dugs is a totally mental decision. People talk all the time about the cost of drugs, how expensive they are to keep illegal, and to buy illegally. If they legalized marijuana there would be such positive financial feedback for the country. It was sold in small packages for the treatment of migraines, rheumatism, and insomnia. (Anslinger) However, today, many individuals are left to choose between feeling better and breaking the law. More than twenty states have legalized the use and/or cultivation of marijuana for medicinal use, thereby removing any criminal penalties from the doctor who prescribe the drug and the patients who use it within the bounds set by state laws. As with any drug, one of the biggest dilemmas in legalizing marijuana is the potential for abuse and addiction. For this reason, under the federal Controlled Substances Act, it is classified as a "Schedule I drug". For cancer patients who not only go through the unimaginable pains and discomforts of the disease itself but also the process of treatment through chemotherapy, the option of using marijuana may prove to be helpful in relief of the symptoms. In an article published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Kate Scannell, M.D. wrote "From working with AIDS and cancer patients, I repeatedly saw how marijuana could ameliorate a patient's debilitating fatigue, restore appetite, diminish pain, remedy nausea, cure vomiting and curtail down–to–the–bone weight loss" ("Do"). Dr. Scannell concluded by claiming "...almost every sick and dying patient I've ever known who's tried medical marijuana experienced a kinder death" ("Do").
