Ronald Reagan Contribution
Ronald Reagan
There have been many presidents come in and out of office, doing a mediocre performance, but one
president who grabbed the hearts of many and truly made an impact, was non other than Ronald
Wilson Reagan. This man, as president, transformed the idea of government and helped encourage
the Soviet Union to end the Cold War. Not only this, but Reagan also embodied the true All–
American guy, not just with his crooked smile and boy–like charm, but through his outstanding
ability as a Hollywood actor and president, later demonstrating and uplifting the idea of American
Conservativism. In a nutshell, Ronald Reagan was what one could say, quite intelligent, military
minded, and very loyal his country, the United States of America, and this is all learned through the
biography, Ronald Reagan, by Jules Tygiel, and edited by Marc C. Carnes.

Through it all, Regan was there, and he never failed to effectively communicate with the nation
during his presidency. In fact, he was so blessed with the gift of gab, that many politicians to this
day study him and his great speeches, because of his inspirational gift to deliver a message. Perhaps,
one of his most famous lines ever used was, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
All in all, Reagan was undoubtedly one of the greatest political influences in America. As being
socially conservative, and a very religious man, he was able to guide people through that time in a
powerful, yet careful way through his charismatic personality and sweet charm. Furthermore, the
Ronald Reagan biography successfully took the reader through the life of Ronald Reagan,
introducing him especially on a personal

Ronald Reagan's Accomplishments
Ronald Reagan was not only a prolific actor, appearing in more than fifty motion picture films,
starting in 1937, he expanded his career in his later adulthood, starting with a nationally–televised
political speech in 1964 for Barry Goldwater, a Republican presidential candidate, and continuing to
the California governorship in 1966, trading his renowned acting career for a life in politics that
continued for the next thirty–five years.
He began his bid for the presidency of the United States in 1868 and was unsuccessful in getting the
party's nomination for president. He attempted to reach president status in 1976 and was again
unsuccessful. He eventually received the Republican party nomination in 1980 and went on to a
resounding defeat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was best known for increasing military spending, deregulating major businesses, and captaining
the recovery of the national economy, which lasted throughout his presidency. On the international
front, he was successful in forging a political relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev, which helped
improve US–Soviet relations and secondarily led to the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Many of the
policies created during his presidency have continued on as important international and national
programs, even after his death in 2004.

California proved divided on state political issues in 1964. The state needed a Republican candidate
with an inspirational personality that could humanize conservatism within the state. Ronald Reagan
fit the criteria (DeGroot, 1997). Reagan a former actor, and president of the Screen Actors Guild was
not a politician by Washington standards. However, Reagan had been on the campaign trail with
Barry Goldwater, delivering inspirational speeches at various campaign stops. Reagans speeches
captivated the audience, speaking in terms the audience understood, exuding a sincerity on the
issues he spoke of. Visual aides, like the television are a wonderful tool, and Reagan used this to his

Ronald Reagan's message and vision for the future of America was clear. Cut taxes and make
Americas economy great again. Increases in unemployment, taxes, and inflation during Jimmy
Carters presidency, would require immediate action. President Reagans stance on the economy
attributed to him winning the election. Enthusiastically, Reagan immediately began working on the
economy by reducing government spending, controlling money to curb inflation, and economic
deregulation (Fox, 2008). Through Reagans policies, the United States began to emerge from the
stronghold of the 1970's. Taking the direction towards economic freedom. Reagan fought and won

The Legacy of Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan is to this date the oldest serving president, and the effects of his presidency have
affected not only the United States of America but most of the world as well. The consensus among
historians is that Ronald Reagan left a lasting legacy that was a great one in numerous ways. His
Reaganomics improved America's economy greatly, and secured its future economic prosperity. He
also fought communism head on and was able to end it in most parts of the world, but more
importantly in Soviet Russia. However, in doing so he got wrapped up in the Iran–Contra Affair,
which will forever be tied to his name in a negative regard. Within America, Reagan was able to
improve society such as his success in curbing the use of illegal drugs. ... Show more content on

The Iran–Contra Affair will almost always be discussed in a conversation about Ronald Reagan's
legacy, and it will usually be used against him negatively.
Ronald Reagan was not only a master of foreign policy, but was also skillful with his domestic
policy as well, such as his handling of illegal drug use within the United States. Reagan began his
administration's "war on drugs" in October 1982 (Glass). On that date he declared that illegal drugs
and their production and transportation were hurting America (Glass). From then on, he made it
clear that his administration would act against illegal drugs, and would do what it could to stop their
influence. Congress, Reagan's Vice President George H.W. Bush, and even his wife all put forth
great contributions to the fight against illegal drugs. Ronald Reagan began to take action of his own
in September 1986 when he helped to put forth and effectively pass Executive Order 12564 (Drug–
Free Federal Workplace). The order was intended to create a drug–free work environment for every
worker in America, and made it the law to not use drugs while at a workplace (Drug–Free Federal

This innovating plan Ronald Reagan had known as the Reagan Revolution, was aimed to give the

given freedom to compete for their own well being and improve their lifestyle. The remarkable thing
he did was lower tax rates for all citizens and by doing this he increased revenue and allowed
citizens to invest more into their country (staff, 2009). Tax cuts for the rich would enable them to
spend and invest more. This was a great move to put America in the right direction, this helped the
economy and created many new jobs. Reagan believed that a tax cut like this would ultimately

Reckoning with Reagan: America and its President in the 1980s Michael Schaller Oxford University
Press: New York, 1992 Ronald Reagan was more than a president. He was a phenomenon. Since he
left office in 1989, many authors have tried to effectively identify who this man really was. He was
an icon to some, and an enigma to others. He stood up to the worst economic, domestic, and
international threats of the time and yet, took naps in the middle of cabinet meetings. At the height
of his popularity in 1986, he had, as Time magazine put it, "found America's sweet spot. " Reagan
had ideals of what he felt America should be like, and made it his number one goal to share his
unrelenting optimism with every person in the country. He pledged to ... Show more content on

This appealed to many in California and set the stage for presidential aspirations in the next decade.
After losing the Republican nomination to Gerald Ford in 1976, Reagan went on to win the 1980
nomination and defeat incumbent, Jimmy Carter. He continued his platform of lower taxes, smaller
government and a stronger defense. During the first few years on his presidency, Reagan embraced
the newly formed religious right, headed by Moral Majority leader, Jerry Fawell and it's stances
against affirmative action, detente, and social movements like feminism and gay rights. Reagan also
took bold strides in the nation's economic policies. In 1980, he met with economists, including
Arthur Laffer. Laffer had presented an economic theory that stated federal revenue would decline
with too much or too little taxation. Reagan was sold on the "Laffer Curve, " and the theory would
soon be the foundation for his supply–side trickle down economic policy. During his eight years as
president, Reagan's administration worked to cut back the network of social programs that had
become bloated monstrosities. He also sought to limit the role of federal courts in promulgating
judicial fiat and fought to eliminate government regulation of business, banking and the
environment. Regan scoffed at those who spoke of a national malaise. Reagan saw himself leading a

confinement of Americans in Iran swept the Republican ticket into office''. This shows me that since
he was swept into the office, he was probably nervous, he came over that and made a great 40th
president. Another example is that on history.com it says " The couple divorced''. This shows me
that since he got in a divorce, it was a very hard time for him, but he got remarried and had 2 more
kids. Finally, on whitehouse.gov it says " On January 20, 1981, Reagan took office. Only 69 days
later he was shot by a would–be assassin, but quickly recovered and returned to duty. " This shows
me that since he was shot and almost killed it was not a happy time for him and he was rushed into
office, but he healed quickly and then returned to duty happy and healthy and that is all that
matters.'' These are some obstacles that Ronald Reagan faced in his life. Ronald Reagan our 40th
president made our country better.
In conclusion Ronald Reagan was a very influential person in our world. He did what he believed,
went after what he wanted, and went past obstacles that he faced. If you have been a citizen of the

Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan was our 40th president and regarded as one of the best to ever step

him a tremendous backing to anything he did and he used this power to take down Soviet

most heroic thing, but he was doing the best he could do. Also, these had to be done and who better
than someone the people listened to. One thing that does bug me is that he talked to people as if he
did go off to war and he would tell them stories of what happened when he was over there. This
bugs me in the fact that he wasn't over there and he took credit a little bit. Even the news was tied up
in it. They would post articles about him leaving and sometimes how he would get put on leave and
would be home. It's like they tried to cover up that he wasn't actually in the war and didn't care what

Ronald Reagan Conservatism
The 1980 election of Ronald Reagan was not only significant because it was the start of a new
decade, but it signified a return to conservatism. Reagan had made a bid for office in 1976 trying to
bypass the incumbent Ford for the Republican nomination. Although unsuccessful in his attempt,
Reagan definitely had merit in pursuing his endeavors.
Ronald Reagan, who hailed from Illinois, enrolled in Eureka College after graduating from high
school. He majored in economics and sociology. The budding politician also had an affinity for
sports. Upon graduating from college, Reagan worked in the broadcasting industry as a Chicago
Cubs announcer. As a broadcaster, Reagan was always on the road traveling from game to game.
During one such trip, Reagan took a screen test in 1937, which led to a seven–year contract with
Warner Brothers studios. Reagan was known as the spokesman for General Electric and took an
active role in the actor's union. Although initially a registered Democrat, Reagan eventually crossed
over to the conservative side of the fence after World War II. He was known for making speeches in
which he praised capitalist ideals and attacked communism. The reputation he earned during the

Many thought he would was too conservative to compete against the incumbent Carter. However,
with the 1980s came a surge of conservatism from a coalition known as the New Right. The New

were not advantageous to social programs.
George H. W. Bush was a native of Connecticut who graduated from Yale University and went on to

He had a hands off style of leadership that was very polarizing when looking back at Carter's

this showed he was an inept president, but Reagan successfully played the most important role of
president: hold his administration on the broad themes he created. He kept his employees focused on
these themes instead of the immediate policies they were passing. He always looked to the future
and tried to change it with slow moves. That is until he passed a 25% reduction in individual and
corporate income tax rates. Then he deregulated many areas of civilian and corporate life believing
it would help the nation find new ways to grow. He also put over half of the judges in the nation in.
They were all conservative judges that set about reducing the power of civil legislation. He also was

Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy in November 1979, after making political friends at party
fund–raising dinners around the country. He easily defeated the other nominees for the Republican
nomination. He chose Gerald Ford as his vice–president. But when Ford's negotiators proposed that
the vice–president should share presidential powers, Reagan chose George Bush instead.
During the campaign against Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter, the biggest issue was the
economy. Reagan blamed Carter for weaknesses in foreign policy and a weak army. During the time
of the election Reagan had great public support, which made it easier to push his program through
congress.
When Reagan became president he started out in a recession. 11 percent of the work force was
unemployed in fall, 1982. This recession reduced inflation significantly, but the interest rates
remained high. During the next two years the economic recovery began. The unemployment came
down, but thousands of factory jobs disappeared. The new jobs, which were mostly in service
industries, paid less, leaving inflation low.
Reagan's economic policy worked on the claim that investment in industry and spending by
consumers would eventually increase tax revenues. With this policy, he persuaded Congress to pass
the Economic Recovery Tax Act. This enacted tax cuts that benefited upper–income taxpayers and

Ronald Reagan's Autobiography
Reagan's autobiography can be split into two distinct parts: Reagan before he became a politician,
and Reagan after he became a politician. The former, in total number of years, covers the vast
majority of Reagan's life. Interestingly, he spends the lesser amount of time describing this part of
his life in his book. Reagan narrates his childhood growing up in Illinois, where he was born into a
relatively poor family. He played football during his high school years, which helped convince
Eureka College in Iowa to accept him. He paid his tuition by using his savings and by doing service
work for the college. It was at Eureka College where Reagan majored in economics, but also
excelled in many extracurricular activities–most notably, in drama. ... Show more content on

He made no doubts that he was an outstanding communicator; he recalls the responses of the
audiences at his campaign speeches. Other likeable characteristics were parts of the way he
practiced politics. For example, he was a staunch adherent to the "11th Commandment". Some
Republicans followed this ethic, and it forbid one from attacking a fellow party member on any
basis other than policy. Reagan was also one to learn–not cut himself–from the past, whether it was
in his own past or in world history. His past experiences influenced his policy making when he
remembered his father leading an organization during the Great Depression that helped the
unemployed find work. The pride in the workmen's eyes once they found they could be self–
sufficient once again inspired Reagan to fight against the excesses of the New Deal which brought
dependence on government and a feeling of worthlessness among Americans. Finally, his reasoning
behind running was never for self–aggrandizement. Seeing major problems plaguing his state and
the nation as a whole, Reagan felt obligated to postpone his own retirement on a serene ranch in
California to take action in service of the

Ronald Reagan is known for many things; however, he is most often recognized for his presidency.
Not only was he a president, he was also a former athlete, Hollywood actor, and devoted husband
and father. Ronald Reagan was one of the most influential and respected men of his time, known for
his traditional morals, values, and beliefs that make him one of the best presidents that America has
ever seen.
Although Ronald Reagan eventually came to lead a glamorous lifestyle, his beginnings were much
more humble. Reagan's life as a child was difficult; his family was struggling in the Depression, and
they had to move many times in order to keep up his father's business. Ronald Reagan was born in

Ronald was a decent student throughout elementary and high school. He had a severe case of
nearsightedness when he was young. He said that he often relied on his acting to help him by
'pretending' his way through lessons to achieve good grades ("Ronald Reagan"). He graduated high
school in his hometown of Dixon, Illinois in 1928 ("Ronald Reagan: Life in Brief"). Reagan's family
and early life experiences would help to shape the rest of his life, including his college education
and extracurricular activities.
Reagan's education and early careers played a huge part in determining where he would go in life
after college. He majored in economics at Eureka College in his home state of Illinois, and his
extracurriculars included journalism, drama, and sports like football, swimming, and track ("Ronald
Reagan: Life in Brief"). He helped with the school's newspaper and student senate. He was even in a
fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon (Skinner 14). However, Reagan's family was poor, so he worked many
jobs, such as washing dishes and lifeguarding, to help pay for his tuition and he sent some money
home to his parents as well ("Ronald Reagan: Life in Brief"). He would be the first member of his
family to receive a higher education. Reagan said that during his time at Eureka College, he "loved
three things: drama, politics, and sports" (Skinner 13). After Reagan became a popular radio sports

During his second term Reagan vowed to get it right. He made tax reform his top legislative priority.
A new Tax Reform Act was developed and Reagan's administration supported the Immigration
Reform and Control Act. Both of which were passed by congress in 1986 (Moss & Thomas,
2013). Besides reviving the economy, Reagan also faced the outbreak of the acquired immune
deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and homelessness. By the mid–80s, the epidemic swept the country
and caused thousands of deaths, mostly amongst gay men (Moss & Thomas, 2013). The
administration refused to acknowledge AIDS publicly which made research and studies on the
disease a slow process (Moss & Thomas, 2013). The homeless symbolized the hopeless failures
of the Reagan era. The homeless was a diverse group including the unemployed, dysfunctional
veterans, drug and alcohol abusers, and racial minorities to name a few. The number of homeless
people was anywhere between 200,000 and up to more than one million. Reagan conveyed
sympathy for the homeless but never offered any new federal programs to alleviate their grief (Moss
& Thomas, 2013).

Ronald Reagan Influence
Throughout the years of Ronald Reagan's presidency, 1981 to 1989, he envisioned America as the
proverbial city on a hill. His presidency saw the restoration of faith in the nation and allowed
America to heal after its long fought battle against communism. The president's massive military
expansion prepared America for unforeseeable conflicts such as the Gulf War and his tax reforms
stimulated America's economy. His leadership and negotiation skills helped to bring about the long–
awaited collapse of the communist Soviet Union and sustained a peacetime period of notable
economic strength. Ronald Reagan was the breath of fresh air that Washington needed, and he
attained what many called the unattainable, and made Americans feel safe again.
The American that Ronald Reagan inherited in 1980 was not a hopeful one. However, his
unwavering belief that American could still be great again made it so. Straight out of Hollywood,
Reagan had a unique understanding of how the media amplified one's personality, and he

The purpose of the Reagan Doctrine was to "sponsor anticommunist guerrillas who are trying to

Similar to other countries President Reagan was helping fight the Soviets by providing the guerrillas
with an extensive amount of military assistance in their fight against the invading Soviets. In part
due to the financial, weapons and military training support from America the Afghan rebels were

doctrine and claim that in no way did it help the situation in Afghanistan, many of them claim that it
was an epic failure. Others believe the doctrine was instrumental in helping bring an end to
communism. One specific advantage that has been credited to the doctrine was "the lack of direct
involvement of American troops, which allowed the United States to confront Soviet allies without
sustaining casualties" (Reagan Doctrine, 2014). In addition it has been argued that it was President

This novel explains the importance of Reagan's foreign policy and how the American
exceptionalism displayed by Reagan and his policies allowed for peace.
The Cold War had raged since the end of World War II and remained an existential threat to the
United States. Reagan reversed the policy of compromise and stood firm against the Soviet Union.
He was persistent in strengthening American foreign policy by pushing his Strategic Defense
Initiative and giving aid to rebels battling Soviet–backed Marxists to many different countries from
Nicaragua to Angola. The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), also known as the "Star Wars" idea,
presented to the American public and to the world on March 23, 1983, as an attempt to create a set
of weapons that would solve the problem of national insecurity. His opponents thought this idea to
be technologically unfeasible and derided Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, but the mere threat
of the U.S. building the system was instrumental in the Soviet Union's collapse. Reagan's
exceptionalism, being different and the first to think of the idea and having the resources to pull it
off, took hold. In the Hans–Henrik Holm Journal of Peace research, it states how this SDI was
different from any other proposal for new weapons.

PHILOSOPHY OF GOVERNMENT Reagan has many opinions on the way the government should
function. Although he became the president, Reagan thought government should be limited. He
thought it was not the solution, but the problem in America (Reagan: "Inaugural Address"). Reagan
was also extremely anti–communist and served on the Screen Actor's Guild. He even became the
board president and helped get the blacklist established. During his presidency he continued his
condemnation of the communist ideals and displayed this strongly during his speech to the people of
West Berlin. He speaks of the Berlin Wall that was built by Communists in August 1961. He
addresses General Secretary Gorbachev saying, "If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the
Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev,
open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall (Reagan: 'Tear Down this Wall')!" This
monumental declaration by Reagan clearly demonstrates his passionate thoughts on the idea of how
a government should conduct itself: for the people, not for itself. Due to a strong opposition to
Communism, Reagan also helped to add to the mass hysteria, when he became a spy by denouncing
his fellow actors for having possible Communist views or ties. In addition, Reagan believed the
