Joseph Grimaldi Research Paper
the pantomime life of Joseph Grimaldi Born on December 18th, 1778, London, England Joseph
Grimaldi worked as a dancer at age four and in 1806 he joined Covent Garden Theatre, where, in the
pantomime Harlequin Mother Goose, he enjoyed his achievement. In this production,
Grimaldi's father was ailed ill health for many years and died of dropsy in 1788. As a result, at age
9, Grimaldi became the family's principal breadwinner. Sheridan waged him an above–average wage
of £1 a week at Drury Lane and allowed his mother to work at Drury Lane as a dancer. However, the
proprietors of Sadler's Wells were less helpful, wounding Grimaldi's pay from 15 shillings

Form and Structure of a Servant to Two Masters Essay
?A Servant To Two Masters? is the play that I studied. The structure is simplistic but also dynamic.
It is quite an unusual play this may be something to do with coming under the genre of Comedia Del
Art this is a form of theatre. Groups of actors would travel and perform their improvised plays. Their
plays would usually be non–scripted and be very much like a pantomime. If plays were ever written
then they would be written after they were performed. Comedia Del Arte was and still is enjoyed by
many people. Lower class citizens could enjoy the simplistic storylines, as the upper class would
admire the comedy within the play.
Lazzi scenes were used in the plays to make the audience laugh. The spectators would most be

Lazzi scenes were spontaneous, however most of them were rigorously rehearsed and the insertion
in performance was sometimes pre planned, they added light humour to the play and were enjoyed
by the audience so when Truffaldino was the surprising protagonist he played a great role, as he was
a foolish character.
A strong narrative is used throughout the play. There is use of soliloquy, which were humorous.
Smeraldina?s speech about men ?If women had a position in this society that was equal to their tact
intelligence and ability to get things done you don?t think they?d put up with you poncing around
like some superannuated gondolier. They wouldn?t give you a second glance, ?big boy?? (Act 2
Scene 5).
?A Servant To Two Masters? is a complicated story, however the audience always know what is
going on, this adds humour, as the audience are enlightened about the plot twist bringing them
closer to the characters. Truffaldino grabs the audience?s hearts even though he is a fool, he makes
the audience feel sorry for him when talking about being hungry.
The play has been contemporised. Modern day language is used this makes it easier to understand.
Colloquialism of ?sod? and ?bollocks? are used these are words that are often spoken today. Being
rewritten to modern day language has really helped me to understand the play more. In my opinion
if I was to read the play before it was adapted I don?t think I would of understood it.

Commedia dell’arte is a performance style that originated...
Commedia dell'arte is a performance style that originated in Italy emphasizing pantomime,
improvisation, and ensemble acting, using over the top movements to accentuate emotions on a bare
stage. Although shows presented by commedia dell'arte troupes were improvisations they were
heavily influenced using an array of stock situations along with very well–developed masks
(characters). Commedia dell'arte masks have molded the creation of characters from William
Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" to Matt Groening's "The Simpsons". Keeping society
entertained at every age. Unlike most masks in theatre, or even masks for ceremonial purposes,
performers in commedia dell'arte wear masks that cover half of their face leaving their mouths free.

The use of masks was of a great significance to the early performers. (Marczak, 7) Early in the life
of commedia dell'arte it quickly became normal to call the "character" "the Mask". Performers
would be the Mask of Il Capitano, or the Mask of Pantalone. This notion of being the mask can get
confusing as not all commedia dell'arte characters wear masks that convey who they are. "Lovers
are the Commedia stock characters that do not wear masks" (Sullivan 14). In this case the Masks are
often referred to as stereotypes. This wouldn't be very accurate. Stereotypical characters are very
broad two dimensional characters that are based on a class of persons that have been stuck with
prejudices and generalizations. Although old men are salacious and money–grubbing that isn't all
the Mask of Pantalone must be this way. If done right he is so much more than that, but that is left to
the performer that takes on the Mask to develop with their own flair. Often we find Il Capitano
playing the false romantic lead. Since he is part of the Vecchi (old people) one of his common
functions is to interfere with the innamorati or young lovers. He is often hired by the father,
Pantalone, to protect his daughter. Upon which Il Capitano often falls head over heels in love with
her, creating opportunities for a great lazzi to occur. Lazzi are rehearsed comical bits added

The Magical Elasticity of Peter Pan Essay
Question:
Explore Peter Hollindale's claim that Peter Pan 'retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing
modernity' (Reader 2, p.159), with reference to different versions since its original production.
Peter Pan – whether as a stage play, a book, a stage musical, a live–action film or a pantomime – has
endured for more than a century as arguably the most famous, and certainly most influential, stories
for children. First performed in 1904, the fairytale drama has been addressing the ever–changing
boundaries between childhood and adulthood ever since. Educationalist and literary critic Peter
Hollindale – in A Hundred Years of Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 159) – asserts that "the play retains its
magical elasticity and its ongoing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first production included a number of scenes which were cut from later performances, and the
1908 scene entitled 'An Afterthought' was performed just once during Barrie's lifetime. Published in
1957, it has, since the 1980s, become the standardized ending to the play which we now know.
Other alterations to the original script were, according to Nicola J. Watson in her Introduction to
Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 143), down to the actors themselves. She contends there was improvisation,
especially during Hook's soliloquy, by the actor Gerald du Maurier, while the notion of Peter as
untouchable resulted in the change of actress playing the part. Already we can see the adaptability
and elasticity of Peter Pan – the 1928 play script is not an accurate record of how the play was
initially performed, but rather it is the play which Barrie wanted his audience to see in print. The
play text includes a substantial cross–over from the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, and also omits a
number of scenes which were initially played, many largely down to improvisation.
At the time of the play's performance, during the Edwardian era, it was noted by theatre historian
Tracy Davis that Peter Pan was first produced "at a transitional moment in stage history", which was
characterized by the waning influence of pantomime, the emergence of the Christmas fairy play, and
the prevalence of realism in straight drama (EA300 Study Guide, p. 145). In

Charlie Chaplin : Film Revolutionary
Chaplin: Film Revolutionary
A revolutionary idea are certain movements that change life as we know it entirely, take for example
the revolutionary idea of a film. There would be no film if it were not for it's forefathers such as
photography, pictures drawn on caves, yet still dating back to the time of story telling. None of these
outstanding ideas would be able to be born without the humans that set off these chains of events.
An important influence in Film is 1920's celebrity, Charlie Chaplin, by using this art form to create

It was all to obscure the audience's perspective. Charlie laid the groundwork to begin the later form
of the green screen, creating objects and situations that entertain the audience that still is in use to
this day. Evidently, Chaplin was negligent and a catalyst to the future of the Film industry.
Charlie Chaplin's films also created havoc in terms of politics. Charlie Chaplin's final speech from
the great Dictator depicts Chaplin in character as Adolf Hitler giving a speech. The film "The
Dictator" during the time of the Red Scare and this film alone accused Chaplin of being a
communist and vanished Chaplin from the United States. Hitler looks directly towards the camera
stating, "Don't give yourselves to brutes...Who drill you – diet you – treat you like cattle, use you as
cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds
and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of
humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate – the unloved and the unnatural!
Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!". It is obvious that Chaplin is out of character
from his role as Hitler, considering he is encouraging in this speech to think for yourselves, a
principle that would go against Hitler's ability to brainwash. The function of Chaplin looking into

Night On Broadway
After closing night of "Seussical the Musical", parents, teachers, and students alike have been asking
the theatre department, "What's the winter show?!" Well, oddly enough, we don't have one – at least
not a seven or eight performance run. This Winter, Wilsonville High School theatre is preparing for
a local performing arts competition in the Portland area. I know what you're thinking: "There are
competitions for theatre?!" Yup! Just like soccer and basketball tournaments, Oregon Thespians
("the Oregon Chapter of the International Thespian Society") organizes a theatre competition every
February. Divided into the Northwest, Northeast, and Southern regions, high schools all over
Oregon gather in three various locations on Feb. 6 to compete at Regionals. While still a

The day before Regionals, Friday Feb. 5, Wilsonville High School theatre will present the Regionals
showcase "Night on Broadway"", where students will perform their acting and musical numbers for
the Wilsonville public – an event that will hopefully raise money for future shows. While there is
only one performance, "Night on Broadway" will included around 30 separate acts from shows such
as "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson", "First Date", "The Wedding Singer", "Dog fight", "I Love
You, You're Perfect, Now Change", "Next to Normal", "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"
and many more. So while "Night on Broadway" might not be a play or a musical, with seven or eigt
performances, elaborate costumes and sets, and a pit orchestra, the actors and directors will be
working just as hard to organize a showcase that not only fundraises for the next dramatic season,
but allows students to practice their numbers once more, before performing in front of judges – a
crucial step in "putting yourself out there" as a

Food And Westernization In The Elephant Vanishes By Haruki...
Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes is a collection of short stories, published in 1993.
Murakami is a Japanese author who has spent most of his life in the West. His writing style is
heavily influenced by his lifestyle and therefore he is not considered to be a traditional Japanese
author (Poole). The affects of westernization on the characters can be evaluated from their
conversations and relationships. There is at least one Western component in each short story and it
always has a relation to the plotline or the characters. Food, arts and romantic relationships are the
three main motifs in which the affects of western elements can be seen. Although these motifs may
not have a direct affect on the actions of the characters, there is always ... Show more content on

In almost every story, there is a romantic relationship between the characters. This relationship is
usually sexual and seems to be at the center of the plotline. It is not very common for Japanese
people to be so open about sexual relationships, but in The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami portrays
characters, which are very exposed about their romantic relationships. In "The Wind–Up Bird and
Tuesday's Woman", the narrator receives a call from an anonymous woman. Although he first
refuses to talk to the woman, he ends up having phone sex with her. 'I'm in bed right now' the
woman says. 'I just took a shower and have nothing on". The fact that the woman is so open to have
a sexual conversation with the narrator reflects the traces of westernization. On the other hand, the
fact that the narrator is not so comfortable with the situation he is in fulfills the reader's expectations
of a traditional Japanese plotline. A romantic relationship is present in almost every story and has a
great influence on the way the story unfolds by shaping the flow of the conversations. In "Family
Affair", the narrator is very exposed about his sex life, while his sister is not so comfortable talking
about sexual relationships. Once again, there is a conflict originated from the differentiation of two
cultures. In this case, the narrator represents a westernized, modern mind while his sister is a model
for a traditional Japanese mindset. "

Examples Of Imagery In Bliss
Imagery is a tool used by authors in order to make objects, ideas or actions appeal the reader's
physical senses.Peter Carey uses this tool often in his descriptions and while doing this, he also uses
other tools like metaphor, simile, personification etc.In this essay, a few of examples of imagery in
second part of " Bliss" will be discussed.
Below is the first example for imagery:
"Look at him: sneaking up the stairs you might have thought he was impersonating a cat in a
pantomime, or even without a costume, a lizard. "(Carey 48)
With these lines Peter Carey compares Harry Joy with a cat in a pantomime or a lizard. The author
makes this comparison in order to make a clear explanation of the character's movements. However,
since there is no help of the words "like" or "as...as", the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Here is an example for the author's use of personification:
" Lucy sat on the verandah rail in a white cheesecloth dress and looked at the bangalow palms,
which, in the absence of any wind, mysteriously rustled their fish–bone fronds, as if talking to each
other."(Carey 98)
Talking is an action that is only special to humans However, in this case the ability to talk is
transferred to bangalow palms, which in reality, cannot talk.In addition to this example of
personification, below is a similar one,in which a house is personified by adding the feature of
having a heart:
"Lucy was up early to sell the Tribune and up late at meet–ings, some official, some secret, in which
she plotted to reform a Communist Party branch. But, like David and Bettina, she could not pass
through the dead dusty heart of the house without feeling a certain sadness, a cold shivering
melancholy similar to that which might be produced by an old orange tree growing next to a
wrecked chimney."(Carey 55)
In conclusion, one can distinguish many uses of imagery and literary tool– such as a metaphor or
simile– in the second part of

An Article On Nonverbal Communication
John Warren Stewig in an article published in the professional journal Language Arts provides an
excellent commentary on nonverbal communication. His article is an exceptional example of
academic writing that has been formatted as a primer or tool to be used by other educators. Professor
Stewig provides a breakout of how much of a given message can be considered verbal and how
much nonverbal. He also introduces the term kinesics and divides kinesics into two categories:
personal and professional gestures. He closes his article by consulting the reader of their obligation
to improve a child 's appreciation of the total range of message sending and their effectiveness as
communicators.
In his opening paragraph, Professor Stewig provides us with a vivid example of nonverbal
communication as he depicts two kindergarten children engaged in a short discussion involving their
new teacher. While one of the kindergartners was duly "impressed" (Stewig 150) by the nice words
spoken by their new teacher, the other notices a particularly striking nonverbal cue of "how her neck
looks when she says them" (Stewig 150) as being contradictory to the complimentary verbal
statement, implying perhaps the teacher wasn't fully convinced on the truthfulness of her verbal
accolades.
Professor Stewig, the author of many popular children's books, wrote this article for fellow teachers
and instructors. He provides them with many interesting teaching lessons sprinkled throughout the
article. His

Theatre In The 21st Century
Theatre in present time is huge and has advanced so much since centuries before our time today.
Theatre is not just something that came about in the 21st century,it has been around for a very long
time. In 1800s England many things took place in the making of productions. Theatre or otherwise
know as drama is a profession of acting, producing, directing, and the writing of plays. It is also a
presentation that is presented in a very dramatic way. One of the main parts that make up a theatre is
the play itself. If you don't have a play and people to act in it,if you don't have both, then there is no
way you can even remotely start. During this time frame there started to be many women actors, you

Analysis of Firebird by Stravinsky Essay
Analysis of Firebird by Stravinsky
Immediately we are introduced to the leitmotif, major and minor thirds, within a tritone. This returns
at bars 15 – 18 and at various other parts in the suite of which I will later elaborate. Within the
opening few bars the pizzicato and legato combined in the cello and bass section produces an
ominous opening to the work. The base drum roll and the murky off beat and horn entry at bar 5
makes it clear that it is evil magic. One of Stravinsky's traits that often appears is how he uses
tritones to represent evil magic, e.g. f# to C, shown in bars 11 and 12, and more simple harmony and
chord progressions, e.g. dominant 7ths and 9ths to show good magic which can bee ... Show more

The bars silence leaves the audience in suspense wondering whether or not Ivan has managed to
catch the Firebird, before a certain elegance added in the variations which has a waltz like lilt to it.
The high register, quick rhythms and simple harmony represent good magic and has an uplifting
feeling to it. The imagery is quite clear of a bird teasing Ivan mocking him as he can't quite catch
her. In bar 3, the tonality becomes less clear, and a whole tone scale is used, this is yet another of
Stravinsky's traits, he pushed these boundaries where other great composers were scared to use it.
Stravinsky uses the piccolo to represent the Firebird taking to flight; this can be seen in 2 bars before
figure 11. During the coda there is a feeling of speeding up without actually doing so. The flurry of
descending triplet semi–quavers could represent the Firebird falling slowly down, into Ivan's clutch.
Stravinsky's use of orchestra shows that Ivan finally manages to catch her in the pantomime.
(Pantomime used in the traditional sense, miming). The hand stopped horns in figure 20 represents
Ivan actually capturing the Firebird, there is a first inversion augmented 6th and tritones heard three
times during figure 20 this is the firebird trying to escape from Ivan's tight clutch. We hear once
again the original leitmotif in semi–quavers, retrograde inverted and simply retrograde.

the cyclical nature of theatre and its history across Europe. Each stage is influenced by the

Roman Theater Research Paper
In contrast to ancient Greece, comedy was more popular in Rome than tragedy
The first permanent theatre structures in Rome were dedicated to the god Venus. It is not clear where
the Roman got the plan for their theatre but the design was elaborate. The theaters had a stage house
which were corridors that provided access to the orchestra area or auditorium. The pulpitum or stage
was raised about five feet and had a curtain. The scanae frons was the method of scenery for Roman
theatre.
Roman theater comes right after the greek one. Roman theater was obviously inspired from the
greek theater but the specificity of the Roman Theater is the architecture of the monument, as well
as the structure and the contents of the dramatic shows.

George Balanchine And Russian Ballet
As world has changed over the last century or so, the ballet world has been changing with it. There
are many people who have helped shape that change. The changes in style were mainly influenced
by George Balanchine. George Balanchine, a Russian choreographer and ballet dancer, also known
as the father of American ballet, was the man who was said to have changed the style of ballet
forever. Along with these changes in style came changes in visual design elements, inspirational
figures, and changes in what the ballets themselves tend to rely on. Many of the features given to
ballet in Russia in the 15th and 16th century still remain to this day, but many features have been
altered to fit . Let's take a closer look at what features truly ... Show more content on

"Balanchine abolished scenery and turned rehearsal clothes into costumes. But even ballets will less

usually skipped the over–the–top characterizations and fairy–tale plots of classic story ballets, like
Swan Lake." (Tonguette) While these are some significant differences, there are many other
differences to be found in other aspects of a ballet. Another one of the main differences between
Russian ballets and Balanchine ballets are the people or items of importance that might inspire a
ballet to be created. There are so many ballets that have been inspired by things like old folklores or
ancient fairy–tales. These ballets are likely to be of Russian origin. Many ballets such as Cinderella,
The Sleeping Beauty, or even The Nutcracker are just few of the many examples of Russian
originated ballets based on fairy–tales. "Petipa's later works showed the way to much of the
innovation of the future, and the choreography and pedagogy of Balanchine (though carried on
primarily in the United States) represent the most important creative response to the legacy of
Petipa's nineteenth–century ballet academy – and the most significant twentieth–century
development of Russian ballet traditions." (Scholl 2) However, Balanchine was not so quick to rely

as support each other to progress in life. I feel this is a type of school where I can excel but also

Moment Of Theatre Research Paper
The art form of Pantomime began as early as Ancient Italy. Comedy shows were put on where there
would be little talking and rely on over the top actions accompanied by music. Also in many cases
gender roles were switched. For example women would play stoic men, and men would play the
damsels in distress. After Roman times the Pantomime form moved on to more parts Italy in the
15th Century. It incorporated famous characters such as well known simpletons and jolly men, that
acted out scenes. This form is called Commedia dell'Arte." This was a "comedy of professional

They both use over the top movements and faces too, yet pantomime or Panto allows the performers
to talk. I have chose to research and explore Panto. I have found that the over the top scenes and
actions lead to very energetic performances. My moment of theatre is from Aladdin, and it is about a
street thug turned big shot. It is in the form of Panto because it enables the audience to partake in the
act all while being engaged in a hilarious and over the top production of a classic story The way I
learned to use and perform Panto was through watching other's performances and applying their
actions to this particular piece. I watched numerous British Panto recordings such as Aladdin and
Cinderella and noticed the mannerisms that each actor had. I tried to apply this to my monologue, to
allow them to feel original and fun. When looking for my moment I had to decide what aspect I
wanted to present, whether it be audience participation, the characters in drag, or the inappropriate
and slapstick humor.I went with Aladdin as my work seeing as it is one of the most enjoyed Pantos
in Britain today but still encapsulates the original intent of the form. I chose this specific monologue
because it is great for audience participation and fun to perform, as pantomime should be. The way I
learned to play my character was through both watching previous actors perform it, but my research
of Panto also helped me think like the character. Wishee Washee, Aladdin's brother, perfectly falls in
line with the foolish Zanni, or servants. Because all he does is cater to his mother, and falls into
numerous traps hindering his brother's success. In this scene he introduces himself and talks directly

Influence Of Greek Folk Song
Greece sits at the crossroad between the Eastern and Western cultures of Asia and Europe. Being at
this critical junction, Greece has experienced the ebb and flow of two cultural currents which
subjected and allowed her to assimilate creatively diverse influences. Once Constantinople fell in
1453, completing the collapse of the Byzantine empire, there followed four hundred years of slavery
which greatly hindered the natural development of Hellenism and restricted its spiritual evolution.
This period was particularly harsh and had an inhibitive influence on Greek music. From the twelfth
or thirteenth century forward, an economically exhausted Byzantium was slowly collapsing due to
years of factional rebellion, religious disputes, western crusades and eastern invasions. While the
new technique of polyphony was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As early as the first century A.D., ancient Greek tragedy, which at its peak of harmonious unity,
incorporated poetry, music and dance, had disintegrated into its component elements.
Actor–tragedians continued to perform only certain parts of the dialogue of the tragedies, while
others with good voices sang the vocal parts. There also arose a gesticulator whose purpose was to
illustrate, with pantomimic gestures, what the actor–tragedian was singing. This gradually
transformed the old Attic style of tragedy and comedy into the tragic–pantomime style of the
imperial Byzantine years that included dance, mime, recitation and song. The reactions of the
Church Fathers and the stream of condemnatory decisions and excommunications issued by
ecumenical synods indicate the popularity of these spectacle–concerts in multi–ethnic Byzantium
and the influence of the mime performances on the austere moral code of the Christians for many
centuries to

Experimental Techniques In Our Town
Wilder used experimental techniques in staging the play to complement the experimental
innovations in characterization and structure. There is minimal scenery in Our Town, which was a
technique never tried before: "The audience, arriving, sees an empty stage... the Stage Manager
begins placing a table and three chairs" (p. 3). There is also no curtain. The act begins with an open
stage. Every single play produced before this had a curtain. Wilder was one of, if not the first, to use
this innovative style for his work. There are no props in the show either. The actors have to
pantomime their actions where props would typically be used: "carrying an imaginary rack with
milk bottles." (p. 10). To add more detail to the character's actions, there

The Importance Of Mimes In The Roman Empire
In the Roman Empire, in its early years there was a great confrontation between the Romans and the
Christians. At this point in time Christianity was a new and growing religion. These Christians
believed that their God was the only God. They didn't create idols of Him or build Him temples as
the Romans did to their gods. These Christians also had another problem with the Romans and that
was their theatre. They didn't have a problem with comedies or tragedies but with Mimes. According
to the text it says that "Because some mimes included sex and violence as part of the performance
and because many of them mocked Christianity, Christian writers and believers demanded –
unsuccessfully– the outlawing of the theatre of their time, which is to say, mime and pantomime."
They were unsuccessful in the outlawing of mimes and pantomimes but in 313 CE the Emperor
Constantine issued the Edict of Milan and proclaimed religious tolerance to the Christians in the
empire. The Christians were unable to hinder the mime movement and it became even bigger with
other entertainment becoming just as excessive as mimes were considered to be.

Similarities Between Roman And Roman Cinema
Numerous influences established Roman theatrical entertainment. Etruscan and Greek antecedent
are what predominantly shaped ancient Roman entertainment. Etruscans were people who lived in
modern day Tuscany and parts of Umbria (Beacham, 1991). Rome inherited all attributes of the
Etruscan religious festivals, where various theatrical performances were given, ranging from acting
to chariot racing. For instance these carnival–like festivals occurred to please the gods though
theatrical offerings. Another element that the Etruscans contributed was the importance of music and
usages of masks and dance. In Etruria, music was accompanied in most activities varying from

How Has Physical Theatre Changed Over Time Essay
How has physical theatre developed over time?
Physical theatre is a form of performance where movement and physicality of the body has the main
part within a performance. There are several quite distinct traditions of performance which all
describe themselves using the term "physical theatre", which has led to a lot of confusion as to what
the definition of physical theatre actually is. The term physical theatre has been applied to
performances consisting mainly of mime, contemporary dance, theatrical clowning and other
physical comedy (such as slapstick), puppetry and mask work and theatrical acrobatics and lifts.
One of the early practitioners of physical theatre was Artaud. His ideas included total theatre,

sexual innuendo. The general movement within Pantomime creates physical theatre as the storyline
is presented to the audience mainly through lifts, dance and slapstick, although performers also use
their voice throughout.

Nearly one million individuals within the United States experience aphasia resulting from a stroke.
The website for the American Heart Association states that strokes are the third leading cause of
death in the United States. They are often referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). This

The Quakerism Movement
Quakerism began as a loose movement of radical dissenters in the mid–17th Century. They were
undoubtedly a revolutionary and unsettling movement when they first started. They rejected
scripture, the sacraments, hierarchy and the Church of England. Many Acts were passed to ensure
that they were ostracised from society and making their worship illegal and punishable with fines
and imprisonment. Early on in their development they were a nebulous and individualistic
movement but several high profile schisms within the movement led to an effort to regain control of
Quakerism through various measures; yearly epistles full of advice for Friends and the adoption of a
loose hierarchy in the form of Elders, Clerks and Overseers. This attempt to gain control of the
movement gained pace in the eighteenth century despite a concerted movement towards the laws
against Quakers and other nonconformists being repealed and relaxed. Some historians argue that by
the 18th Century, when Wild Oats was written, the Quakers had become almost sect–like: 'By mid
eighteenth century, the term 'sect' could rightly be applied to the Society of Friends [Quakers]. The
organisation showed many of the hallmarks: supervision of ministry, censorship, limitation of

Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin Essay
Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin
We have all seen it done before, either in real life or in the movies. A situation is funny because of
the misinterpretation of someone's actions or the complete conflict of what a situation seems to be
and what it really is. People come into contact with sight gags all the time. One might be trying to be
sneaky and hide something and then when someone looks, one pretends to be doing something else
not to get caught. One could also pantomime using an umbrella as a baseball bat. These are both
basic forms of sight gags.
Sight gags are an essential part of comedy, especially the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin's time.

The accuser, however, had not seen that Chaplin had put the money in her pocket in the first place.
This misunderstanding makes the scene funny when the man tells the woman to check her pockets
and she is overjoyed to find money.
The second sight gag discussed is the mimed metaphor, which is when an actor uses pantomime as a
gag. For this, the actor uses an object that is very recognizable and pantomimes something that is
not its proper use. This is a kind of "visual simile," and is generally used in silent films more than
sound films. The mimed metaphor is different from the mutual interface gag in that there are not
multiple points of view to consider, they often do not result in mishaps, and commonly deal with
objects rather than events. The mimed metaphor is used in the film The Count, in which at one point
Chaplin's character uses his cane like a pool cue in order to hit an object off the table.
At the beginning of The Immigrant Chaplin's character is hanging over the side of the boat. The
audience gets the impression that he is seasick, however we soon learn that he is actually just
fishing. This is a perfect example of switch image. In the beginning, the audience is led to believe
one thing, but with the revelation of new details we soon realize that our perception of the situation

First of all, the play Our Town takes place in the fictional community of Grover's Corners, New
Hampshire. According to the script the play is to be performed with little scenery, no set and
minimal props. Wilder was dissatisfied with the theatre of his time, and felt as though the elaborate
sets in the day were harmfully evasive. His answer was to have the characters mime the objects with
which they interact. Their surroundings are created only with chairs, tables, and ladders. This is seen
clearly in the scene which Emily helps George with his evening homework, conversing through
upstairs windows, shown by the two actors standing atop separate ladders to represent their
neighboring houses. Says Wilder, "Our claim, our hope, our despair are in the mind – not in things,
not in 'scenery." Alternatively, in the play Master Harold... and the Boys occurs in South Africa

Dancing As A World That Did Not Know Dancing Essay
Can you image a world that did not know dancing? When I asked this question to my friends, one of
them answered, how can we have fun without dancing? People dance when they feel comfortable,
and they also can dance when having fun because people, as human beings, have known
instinctively that dancing with rhythm makes them happy. It is interesting that people all already
know how to dance. However, we might not have an idea why people know how to dance, and
where the pleasant feelings that you can get due to dance came from. Without a doubt, dancing was
fundamentally not made in the 21st century. It was made and built by ancient people before the birth
of the earliest human civilizations. Dance does not leave behind clearly identifiable physical
artifacts such as stone tools, hunting implements, or cave paintings ( Champion and Thomas, 2).
People have danced to pray and communicate with god, and these dances also have been an
important part of ceremonies, rituals, celebrations, and entertainment. Even though time passed
since dancing began, dance is always about communication among people, and they are required
several kinds of dance style to show their expression. One of the dances which people have handed
down from the ancient times is folk dance. Folk dance is a form of dance developed by a group of
people that reflects the traditional life of the people of a certain country or region. Besides, folk

Greek Dance Forms
Dance has been existing in our planet ever since the moments of our existence. We used them for
lots of ways such as ceremonies, celebration and entertainment. Dance was also used for a way to
communicate in the olden times as there were no official language. The oldest proof of existence of
dance were found from an old cave in India. It shows scenes of hunting, burials, drinking and most
importantly dancing. There is no question that dance remains one of the most effective way to
communicate today. For this essay, I will be explaining and comparing about the dance forms from
Ancient Egypt, Greek and Roman.
The Egyptians have used their dance forms for many reasons such as mourning and ceremonies. It

Critical Discourse On The Cyclops Essay
Critical discourse on the "Cyclops" episode of Ulysses has remained remarkably consistent over its
history. Much of the analysis focuses the episode's dual expression through narration and what
David Hayman calls the narrative "asides," with other attention paid towards the episode's narrative
structure and characterization. In this paper, I will explore the episode's history of critical discourse,
beginning first by looking at the process of its creation as explicated by Michael Groden in his essay
"'Cyclops' in Progress, 1919." I will then compare the analyses of David Hayman and Hugh Kenner
of 1974 and 1980 respectively, the latter of which having been informed in no small part by the
former, before briefly looking at a modern analysis of the episode as opera by Timothy Martin in
2000. Groden writes that "Cyclops" is the first episode that entirely departs from the original
narrative style of Ulysses. In the first ten episodes, up to and including "Wandering Rocks", the
novel is written in the style of "the combination of third person, past tense objective description and
first person, present tense interior monologue" (Groden 123). In the eleventh episode "Sirens", Joyce
begins to deconstruct this ordinary technique–call it the "monologue method"–with the introduction
of music into his prose, "by imposing the fugal forms and musical patterns onto it" (123). "Cyclops"
is narrated by a first–person unnamed narrator who David Hayman describes as an "insistent and

sports, pick up a book to read, or have play time. One thing that has carried through the centuries is
athletics. Although the types of athletic activities have altered somewhat, a few have stayed alive
and are performed today. In the Victorian Era in England, people played two kinds of sports:

These pieces of embroidery were called samplers. Girls also enjoyed playing with their doll houses.
The furniture for these could be bought and changed with times and fashions. Victorian dolls were
probably the most beautiful ones made. Their heads and shoulders were made of wax or china with
bodies made of stuffed calico or wood. (Hobbies) Most dolls were dressed as adults with beautiful
clothes made from satin, taffeta or lace. A poor girl would long for a doll like this, which she would
only see in shop windows; she would never be able to afford one but might have a rag doll instead.
Along with sports and children's activities, there were many other things to do as well; things to do
at night and things to do during the day. Reading was a popular leisure; many books written during
the Victorian Era are still enjoyed today. Famous authors include: the Brontë sisters, Charles
Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Of the many works of literature produced
in the Victorian Era, some selected works include Salome by Oscar Wilde, Patience by Gilbert and
Sullivan, and The Frozen Deep by Charles Dickens. Of the Victorian Era, there were many

  • 1. Joseph Grimaldi Research Paper the pantomime life of Joseph Grimaldi Born on December 18th, 1778, London, England Joseph Grimaldi worked as a dancer at age four and in 1806 he joined Covent Garden Theatre, where, in the pantomime Harlequin Mother Goose, he enjoyed his achievement. In this production, Grimaldi's father was ailed ill health for many years and died of dropsy in 1788. As a result, at age 9, Grimaldi became the family's principal breadwinner. Sheridan waged him an above–average wage of £1 a week at Drury Lane and allowed his mother to work at Drury Lane as a dancer. • 3. Form and Structure of a Servant to Two Masters Essay ?A Servant To Two Masters? is the play that I studied. The structure is simplistic but also dynamic. It is quite an unusual play this may be something to do with coming under the genre of Comedia Del Art this is a form of theatre. Groups of actors would travel and perform their improvised plays. Their plays would usually be non–scripted and be very much like a pantomime. If plays were ever written then they would be written after they were performed. Comedia Del Arte was and still is enjoyed by many people. Lower class citizens could enjoy the simplistic storylines, as the upper class would admire the comedy within the play. Lazzi scenes were used in the plays to make the audience laugh. The spectators would most be looking forward to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lazzi scenes were spontaneous, however most of them were rigorously rehearsed and the insertion in performance was sometimes pre planned, they added light humour to the play and were enjoyed by the audience so when Truffaldino was the surprising protagonist he played a great role, as he was a foolish character. A strong narrative is used throughout the play. There is use of soliloquy, which were humorous. Smeraldina?s speech about men ?If women had a position in this society that was equal to their tact intelligence and ability to get things done you don?t think they?d put up with you poncing around like some superannuated gondolier. They wouldn?t give you a second glance, ?big boy?? (Act 2 Scene 5). ?A Servant To Two Masters? is a complicated story, however the audience always know what is going on, this adds humour, as the audience are enlightened about the plot twist bringing them closer to the characters. Truffaldino grabs the audience?s hearts even though he is a fool, he makes the audience feel sorry for him when talking about being hungry. The play has been contemporised. Modern day language is used this makes it easier to understand. Colloquialism of ?sod? and ?bollocks? are used these are words that are often spoken today. Being rewritten to modern day language has really helped me to understand the play more. In my opinion if I was to read the play before it was adapted I don?t think I would of understood it. The ... • 5. Commedia dell’arte is a performance style that originated... Commedia dell'arte is a performance style that originated in Italy emphasizing pantomime, improvisation, and ensemble acting, using over the top movements to accentuate emotions on a bare stage. Although shows presented by commedia dell'arte troupes were improvisations they were heavily influenced using an array of stock situations along with very well–developed masks (characters). Commedia dell'arte masks have molded the creation of characters from William Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" to Matt Groening's "The Simpsons". Keeping society entertained at every age. Unlike most masks in theatre, or even masks for ceremonial purposes, performers in commedia dell'arte wear masks that cover half of their face leaving their mouths free. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of masks was of a great significance to the early performers. (Marczak, 7) Early in the life of commedia dell'arte it quickly became normal to call the "character" "the Mask". Performers would be the Mask of Il Capitano, or the Mask of Pantalone. This notion of being the mask can get confusing as not all commedia dell'arte characters wear masks that convey who they are. "Lovers are the Commedia stock characters that do not wear masks" (Sullivan 14). In this case the Masks are often referred to as stereotypes. This wouldn't be very accurate. Stereotypical characters are very broad two dimensional characters that are based on a class of persons that have been stuck with prejudices and generalizations. Although old men are salacious and money–grubbing that isn't all the Mask of Pantalone must be this way. If done right he is so much more than that, but that is left to the performer that takes on the Mask to develop with their own flair. Often we find Il Capitano playing the false romantic lead. Since he is part of the Vecchi (old people) one of his common functions is to interfere with the innamorati or young lovers. He is often hired by the father, Pantalone, to protect his daughter. Upon which Il Capitano often falls head over heels in love with her, creating opportunities for a great lazzi to occur. Lazzi are rehearsed comical bits added throughout the performance at the performer's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Magical Elasticity of Peter Pan Essay Question: Explore Peter Hollindale's claim that Peter Pan 'retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing modernity' (Reader 2, p.159), with reference to different versions since its original production. Peter Pan – whether as a stage play, a book, a stage musical, a live–action film or a pantomime – has endured for more than a century as arguably the most famous, and certainly most influential, stories for children. First performed in 1904, the fairytale drama has been addressing the ever–changing boundaries between childhood and adulthood ever since. Educationalist and literary critic Peter Hollindale – in A Hundred Years of Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 159) – asserts that "the play retains its magical elasticity and its ongoing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This first production included a number of scenes which were cut from later performances, and the 1908 scene entitled 'An Afterthought' was performed just once during Barrie's lifetime. Published in 1957, it has, since the 1980s, become the standardized ending to the play which we now know. Other alterations to the original script were, according to Nicola J. Watson in her Introduction to Peter Pan (Reader 2, p. 143), down to the actors themselves. She contends there was improvisation, especially during Hook's soliloquy, by the actor Gerald du Maurier, while the notion of Peter as untouchable resulted in the change of actress playing the part. Already we can see the adaptability and elasticity of Peter Pan – the 1928 play script is not an accurate record of how the play was initially performed, but rather it is the play which Barrie wanted his audience to see in print. The play text includes a substantial cross–over from the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, and also omits a number of scenes which were initially played, many largely down to improvisation. At the time of the play's performance, during the Edwardian era, it was noted by theatre historian Tracy Davis that Peter Pan was first produced "at a transitional moment in stage history", which was characterized by the waning influence of pantomime, the emergence of the Christmas fairy play, and the prevalence of realism in straight drama (EA300 Study Guide, p. 145). • 9. Charlie Chaplin : Film Revolutionary Chaplin: Film Revolutionary A revolutionary idea are certain movements that change life as we know it entirely, take for example the revolutionary idea of a film. There would be no film if it were not for it's forefathers such as photography, pictures drawn on caves, yet still dating back to the time of story telling. None of these outstanding ideas would be able to be born without the humans that set off these chains of events. An important influence in Film is 1920's celebrity, Charlie Chaplin, by using this art form to create silent films to evoke political inquest, and renovation. Chaplin's specialty in film was the art of silent films, an area in which intricate forms of pantomime must be performed in order to deliver a story to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was all to obscure the audience's perspective. Charlie laid the groundwork to begin the later form of the green screen, creating objects and situations that entertain the audience that still is in use to this day. Evidently, Chaplin was negligent and a catalyst to the future of the Film industry. Charlie Chaplin's films also created havoc in terms of politics. Charlie Chaplin's final speech from the great Dictator depicts Chaplin in character as Adolf Hitler giving a speech. The film "The Dictator" during the time of the Red Scare and this film alone accused Chaplin of being a communist and vanished Chaplin from the United States. Hitler looks directly towards the camera stating, "Don't give yourselves to brutes...Who drill you – diet you – treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate – the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!". It is obvious that Chaplin is out of character from his role as Hitler, considering he is encouraging in this speech to think for yourselves, a principle that would go against Hitler's ability to brainwash. • 11. Night On Broadway After closing night of "Seussical the Musical", parents, teachers, and students alike have been asking the theatre department, "What's the winter show?!" Well, oddly enough, we don't have one – at least not a seven or eight performance run. This Winter, Wilsonville High School theatre is preparing for a local performing arts competition in the Portland area. I know what you're thinking: "There are competitions for theatre?!" Yup! Just like soccer and basketball tournaments, Oregon Thespians ("the Oregon Chapter of the International Thespian Society") organizes a theatre competition every February. Divided into the Northwest, Northeast, and Southern regions, high schools all over Oregon gather in three various locations on Feb. 6 to compete at Regionals. While still a competition, the contest looks a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The day before Regionals, Friday Feb. 5, Wilsonville High School theatre will present the Regionals showcase "Night on Broadway"", where students will perform their acting and musical numbers for the Wilsonville public – an event that will hopefully raise money for future shows. While there is only one performance, "Night on Broadway" will included around 30 separate acts from shows such as "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson", "First Date", "The Wedding Singer", "Dog fight", "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change", "Next to Normal", "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and many more. So while "Night on Broadway" might not be a play or a musical, with seven or eigt performances, elaborate costumes and sets, and a pit orchestra, the actors and directors will be working just as hard to organize a showcase that not only fundraises for the next dramatic season, but allows students to practice their numbers once more, before performing in front of judges – a crucial step in "putting yourself out there" as a ... • 13. Food And Westernization In The Elephant Vanishes By Haruki... Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes is a collection of short stories, published in 1993. Murakami is a Japanese author who has spent most of his life in the West. His writing style is heavily influenced by his lifestyle and therefore he is not considered to be a traditional Japanese author (Poole). The affects of westernization on the characters can be evaluated from their conversations and relationships. There is at least one Western component in each short story and it always has a relation to the plotline or the characters. Food, arts and romantic relationships are the three main motifs in which the affects of western elements can be seen. Although these motifs may not have a direct affect on the actions of the characters, there is always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In almost every story, there is a romantic relationship between the characters. This relationship is usually sexual and seems to be at the center of the plotline. It is not very common for Japanese people to be so open about sexual relationships, but in The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami portrays characters, which are very exposed about their romantic relationships. In "The Wind–Up Bird and Tuesday's Woman", the narrator receives a call from an anonymous woman. Although he first refuses to talk to the woman, he ends up having phone sex with her. 'I'm in bed right now' the woman says. 'I just took a shower and have nothing on". The fact that the woman is so open to have a sexual conversation with the narrator reflects the traces of westernization. On the other hand, the fact that the narrator is not so comfortable with the situation he is in fulfills the reader's expectations of a traditional Japanese plotline. A romantic relationship is present in almost every story and has a great influence on the way the story unfolds by shaping the flow of the conversations. In "Family Affair", the narrator is very exposed about his sex life, while his sister is not so comfortable talking about sexual relationships. Once again, there is a conflict originated from the differentiation of two cultures. In this case, the narrator represents a westernized, modern mind while his sister is a model for a traditional Japanese mindset. " ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examples Of Imagery In Bliss Imagery is a tool used by authors in order to make objects, ideas or actions appeal the reader's physical senses.Peter Carey uses this tool often in his descriptions and while doing this, he also uses other tools like metaphor, simile, personification etc.In this essay, a few of examples of imagery in second part of " Bliss" will be discussed. Below is the first example for imagery: "Look at him: sneaking up the stairs you might have thought he was impersonating a cat in a pantomime, or even without a costume, a lizard. "(Carey 48) With these lines Peter Carey compares Harry Joy with a cat in a pantomime or a lizard. The author makes this comparison in order to make a clear explanation of the character's movements. But, like David and Bettina, she could not pass through the dead dusty heart of the house without feeling a certain sadness, a cold shivering melancholy similar to that which might be produced by an old orange tree growing next to a wrecked chimney."(Carey 55) In conclusion, one can distinguish many uses of imagery and literary tool– such as a metaphor or simile– in the second part of ... • 17. An Article On Nonverbal Communication John Warren Stewig in an article published in the professional journal Language Arts provides an excellent commentary on nonverbal communication. His article is an exceptional example of academic writing that has been formatted as a primer or tool to be used by other educators. Professor Stewig provides a breakout of how much of a given message can be considered verbal and how much nonverbal. He also introduces the term kinesics and divides kinesics into two categories: personal and professional gestures. He closes his article by consulting the reader of their obligation to improve a child 's appreciation of the total range of message sending and their effectiveness as communicators. In his opening paragraph, Professor Stewig provides us with a vivid example of nonverbal communication as he depicts two kindergarten children engaged in a short discussion involving their new teacher. While one of the kindergartners was duly "impressed" (Stewig 150) by the nice words spoken by their new teacher, the other notices a particularly striking nonverbal cue of "how her neck looks when she says them" (Stewig 150) as being contradictory to the complimentary verbal statement, implying perhaps the teacher wasn't fully convinced on the truthfulness of her verbal accolades. Professor Stewig, the author of many popular children's books, wrote this article for fellow teachers and instructors. He provides them with many interesting teaching lessons sprinkled throughout the article. His ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theatre is not just something that came about in the 21st century,it has been around for a very long time. In 1800s England many things took place in the making of productions. Theatre or otherwise know as drama is a profession of acting, producing, directing, and the writing of plays. It is also a presentation that is presented in a very dramatic way. • 21. Analysis of Firebird by Stravinsky Essay Analysis of Firebird by Stravinsky Immediately we are introduced to the leitmotif, major and minor thirds, within a tritone. This returns at bars 15 – 18 and at various other parts in the suite of which I will later elaborate. Within the opening few bars the pizzicato and legato combined in the cello and bass section produces an ominous opening to the work. The base drum roll and the murky off beat and horn entry at bar 5 makes it clear that it is evil magic. One of Stravinsky's traits that often appears is how he uses tritones to represent evil magic, e.g. f# to C, shown in bars 11 and 12, and more simple harmony and chord progressions, e.g. dominant 7ths and 9ths to show good magic which can bee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bars silence leaves the audience in suspense wondering whether or not Ivan has managed to catch the Firebird, before a certain elegance added in the variations which has a waltz like lilt to it. The high register, quick rhythms and simple harmony represent good magic and has an uplifting feeling to it. The imagery is quite clear of a bird teasing Ivan mocking him as he can't quite catch her. In bar 3, the tonality becomes less clear, and a whole tone scale is used, this is yet another of Stravinsky's traits, he pushed these boundaries where other great composers were scared to use it. Stravinsky uses the piccolo to represent the Firebird taking to flight; this can be seen in 2 bars before figure 11. During the coda there is a feeling of speeding up without actually doing so. The flurry of descending triplet semi–quavers could represent the Firebird falling slowly down, into Ivan's clutch. Stravinsky's use of orchestra shows that Ivan finally manages to catch her in the pantomime. (Pantomime used in the traditional sense, miming). The hand stopped horns in figure 20 represents Ivan actually capturing the Firebird, there is a first inversion augmented 6th and tritones heard three times during figure 20 this is the firebird trying to escape from Ivan's tight clutch. We hear once again the original leitmotif in semi–quavers, retrograde inverted and simply retrograde. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There would be no film if it were not for it's forefathers such as photography, pictures drawn on caves, yet still dating back to the time of story telling. None of these implicit ideas would be able to be born without the Humans that set off these chains of events. An important influence in Film is 1940's celebrity, Charlie Chaplin, by using this art form to create silent films to evoke political questioning, and renovation Chaplin's specialty in film was the art of silent films, an area in which intricate forms of pantomime must be performed in order to deliver the story toward the audience. When the film was introduced to sound, Chaplin felt as if he was being confined, "If I did make a talking picture, no matter how good I was I could never surpass the artistry of my pantomime... If I talked I would become like any other comedian." This new technology started to cage up Chaplin's abilities since the use of sound meant that there would be certain restrictions in the way the actor is allowed to move, and the unnatural sound of their voices due to the need of over articulation for the microphone to pick up the sound. It comes to no surprise why Chaplin was so offended by the new movement and renovations that came to revolutionize the film industry itself, the fusion between film and sound. Though Chaplin was ... The changes in style were mainly influenced by George Balanchine. George Balanchine, a Russian choreographer and ballet dancer, also known as the father of American ballet, was the man who was said to have changed the style of ballet forever. Along with these changes in style came changes in visual design elements, inspirational figures, and changes in what the ballets themselves tend to rely on. There also arose a gesticulator whose purpose was to illustrate, with pantomimic gestures, what the actor–tragedian was singing. At this point in time Christianity was a new and growing religion. These Christians believed that their God was the only God. They didn't create idols of Him or build Him temples as the Romans did to their gods. These Christians also had another problem with the Romans and that was their theatre. They didn't have a problem with comedies or tragedies but with Mimes. According to the text it says that "Because some mimes included sex and violence as part of the performance and because many of them mocked Christianity, Christian writers and believers demanded – unsuccessfully– the outlawing of the theatre of their time, which is to say, mime and pantomime." They were unsuccessful in the outlawing of mimes and pantomimes but in 313 CE the Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan and proclaimed religious tolerance to the Christians in the empire. The Christians were unable to hinder the mime movement and it became even bigger with other entertainment becoming just as excessive as mimes were considered to be. This was a "comedy of professional artists" travelling from province to province in Italy and then France, who improvised and told comic stories that held lessons for the crowd, changing the main character depending on where they were performing. Pantomime mainly incorperated song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, cross–dressing, in–jokes, topical references, audience participation, and mild sexual innuendo. The general movement within Pantomime creates physical theatre as the storyline is presented to the audience mainly through lifts, dance and slapstick, although performers also use their voice throughout. The Theatre of the Absurd is the name for particular plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s, as well as one for the style of theatre which has evolved from their work. Their work expressed what happens when human existence has no meaning or purpose and therefore all communication breaks down, alerting their audiences to pursue the opposite. The Absurd in these plays takes the form of man's reaction to a world apparently without meaning, and/or man as a puppet controlled or menaced by invisible outside forces. • 55. Physician Assisted Suicide Case Study Nearly one million individuals within the United States experience aphasia resulting from a stroke. The website for the American Heart Association states that strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States. They are often referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). This occurs when the blood flow to the brain has been either stopped or interrupted. The deprivation of blood flow and oxygen to the brain results in a stroke. Around 41.2 percent of individuals who suffered from a stroke will have aphasia (Guyomard et al., 2009). Manasco (2014) stated that aphasia is a deficit in language abilities resulting from the brain. It is broken down into, two categories fluent and non–fluent. Individuals with aphasia typically suffer from anomia. This is a condition where word retrieval (anomia) is difficult. "Generalized naming improvements were noted for three individuals with phonological anomia. GES improved the use of corresponding gestures for trained words."(p.235–236) Results were largely maintained after treatment was completed. • 57. The Quakerism Movement Quakerism began as a loose movement of radical dissenters in the mid–17th Century. They were undoubtedly a revolutionary and unsettling movement when they first started. They rejected scripture, the sacraments, hierarchy and the Church of England. Many Acts were passed to ensure that they were ostracised from society and making their worship illegal and punishable with fines and imprisonment. Early on in their development they were a nebulous and individualistic movement but several high profile schisms within the movement led to an effort to regain control of Quakerism through various measures; yearly epistles full of advice for Friends and the adoption of a loose hierarchy in the form of Elders, Clerks and Overseers. This attempt to gain control of the movement gained pace in the eighteenth century despite a concerted movement towards the laws against Quakers and other nonconformists being repealed and relaxed. Some historians argue that by the 18th Century, when Wild Oats was written, the Quakers had become almost sect–like: 'By mid eighteenth century, the term 'sect' could rightly be applied to the Society of Friends [Quakers]. • 59. Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin Essay Sight Gags and Charlie Chaplin We have all seen it done before, either in real life or in the movies. A situation is funny because of the misinterpretation of someone's actions or the complete conflict of what a situation seems to be and what it really is. People come into contact with sight gags all the time. One might be trying to be sneaky and hide something and then when someone looks, one pretends to be doing something else not to get caught. One could also pantomime using an umbrella as a baseball bat. These are both basic forms of sight gags. Sight gags are an essential part of comedy, especially the silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin's time. A sight gag is a visual form of comedy. In this form of comedy, the actors rely on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The accuser, however, had not seen that Chaplin had put the money in her pocket in the first place. This misunderstanding makes the scene funny when the man tells the woman to check her pockets and she is overjoyed to find money. The second sight gag discussed is the mimed metaphor, which is when an actor uses pantomime as a gag. For this, the actor uses an object that is very recognizable and pantomimes something that is not its proper use. This is a kind of "visual simile," and is generally used in silent films more than sound films. The mimed metaphor is different from the mutual interface gag in that there are not multiple points of view to consider, they often do not result in mishaps, and commonly deal with objects rather than events. The mimed metaphor is used in the film The Count, in which at one point Chaplin's character uses his cane like a pool cue in order to hit an object off the table. At the beginning of The Immigrant Chaplin's character is hanging over the side of the boat. The audience gets the impression that he is seasick, however we soon learn that he is actually just fishing. This is a perfect example of switch image. In the beginning, the audience is led to believe one thing, but with the revelation of new details we soon realize that our perception of the situation was wrong, and generally our perception changes to something ... • 61. Essay Wilders´ Our Town and Fugard¨s Master Harold and the... When we remember an event from our past, is it not true that much of what we recall is a description of that event based on how it made us feel? That event had an effect on how we felt at the time, and what we describe when recalling that event is the sentiment, idea or feeling we experienced as a result of the event. In the end, the effect of what happened is what we deem important to us. However, think for a moment about any such event in your life. Is it possible to accurately describe that event without including details of where and when it occurred? Likely not, since a great deal of what we rely on for our experience, in and out of the moment, is our physiological and psychological state at that specific time. Furthermore, since ... According to the script the play is to be performed with little scenery, no set and minimal props. Wilder was dissatisfied with the theatre of his time, and felt as though the elaborate sets in the day were harmfully evasive. His answer was to have the characters mime the objects with which they interact. Their surroundings are created only with chairs, tables, and ladders. This is seen clearly in the scene which Emily helps George with his evening homework, conversing through upstairs windows, shown by the two actors standing atop separate ladders to represent their neighboring houses. Says Wilder, "Our claim, our hope, our despair are in the mind – not in things, not in 'scenery." Alternatively, in the play Master Harold... and the Boys occurs in South Africa during the 1950s apartheid era, depicting how institutionalized racism, bigotry or hatred can become absorbed by those who live under it; symbolically represented by the rain which falls non–stop during the entire duration of the play. • 65. Dancing As A World That Did Not Know Dancing Essay Can you image a world that did not know dancing? When I asked this question to my friends, one of them answered, how can we have fun without dancing? People dance when they feel comfortable, and they also can dance when having fun because people, as human beings, have known instinctively that dancing with rhythm makes them happy. It is interesting that people all already know how to dance. However, we might not have an idea why people know how to dance, and where the pleasant feelings that you can get due to dance came from. Without a doubt, dancing was fundamentally not made in the 21st century. It was made and built by ancient people before the birth of the earliest human civilizations. Dance does not leave behind clearly identifiable physical artifacts such as stone tools, hunting implements, or cave paintings ( Champion and Thomas, 2). People have danced to pray and communicate with god, and these dances also have been an important part of ceremonies, rituals, celebrations, and entertainment. Even though time passed since dancing began, dance is always about communication among people, and they are required several kinds of dance style to show their expression. One of the dances which people have handed down from the ancient times is folk dance. Folk dance is a form of dance developed by a group of people that reflects the traditional life of the people of a certain country or region. • 75. Critical Discourse On The Cyclops Essay Critical discourse on the "Cyclops" episode of Ulysses has remained remarkably consistent over its history. Much of the analysis focuses the episode's dual expression through narration and what David Hayman calls the narrative "asides," with other attention paid towards the episode's narrative structure and characterization. In this paper, I will explore the episode's history of critical discourse, beginning first by looking at the process of its creation as explicated by Michael Groden in his essay "'Cyclops' in Progress, 1919." I will then compare the analyses of David Hayman and Hugh Kenner of 1974 and 1980 respectively, the latter of which having been informed in no small part by the former, before briefly looking at a modern analysis of the episode as opera by Timothy Martin in 2000. Groden writes that "Cyclops" is the first episode that entirely departs from the original narrative style of Ulysses. In the first ten episodes, up to and including "Wandering Rocks", the novel is written in the style of "the combination of third person, past tense objective description and first person, present tense interior monologue" (Groden 123). In the eleventh episode "Sirens", Joyce begins to deconstruct this ordinary technique–call it the "monologue method"–with the introduction of music into his prose, "by imposing the fugal forms and musical patterns onto it" (123). "Cyclops" is narrated by a first–person unnamed narrator who David Hayman describes as an "insistent and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But back in the late 1700s/early 1800s, they did not have TVs, iPods, video games, or computers. With the resources available then, they would play sports, pick up a book to read, or have play time.
