The Concept of Gender and Gender Identity
I am interested in the concept of gender and the deeper meaning of being considered a transgendered
person. I feel that a lot of people do not know or care to know about these topics on a more in depth
level. People who close their eyes to the idea that a person could be born with the physical aspects
of a male yet have the psychological aspects of a female and vice versa, tend to be the ones who say
that those people are going against nature or god. Discriminating against people on the principles
that their view on the matter is right and their main source of information is the bible. I read posts on
a weekly basis that have the writer angrily ranting on an ignorant comment made by another person.
The posts usually give a very detailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That does not stop most Americans from group up people who are transgendered or those cross–
dress and those who are lesbian, gay, or bi–sexual into the same categories. This allows those more
intolerant of social differences to justify discriminating people of transgender or gay backgrounds
under the guise of religious views to deny employment or rights to use their services. Very much
like what happened to African Americans in the 19th and 20th century. Like many other subcultures
the transgender community faces discrimination. As of 2013 there are 33 states in America that have
no state laws protecting transgender people from being fired from the work place. According to
Wikipedia (transgender), a federal bill to protect workers from discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity – called the Employment Non–Discrimination Act – has failed to
pass several times over the past twenty years. While there is no Federal law protecting against
gender discrimination. There are a few states that have their own laws that prohibit discrimination
based on gender; (California, Colorado Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa,
Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island,
Vermont, New York and Washington and
D.C). In more than half of the county a person could have a very hard time finding work or other
services if they are found to be transgender. I found from my research that being

Informative Speech On Drag Queen
Good morning everyone. I'm Savannah, I hope you all are just as excited as I am to start off our
speeches. I would like to take a moment and ask you all to close your and relax, take a deep breath
think about a time when you felt truly comfortable, safe, and at peace. Now open your eyes. Where
were you? It may be at the sunny beach, the calming lake, the lush woods, or even that warm bed
you left this morning. For me that place is a club watching a drag show. Surprising right? Does
anyone here know what a drag queen is? A drag queen is defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary
as usually a homosexual male dressing up as a woman and performing for entertainment. While that
may be the case drag is so much more than just a man in makeup and a dress. The art of drag is
inclusive, builds an open and safe community, and gives a platform to speak up and give back. Now
this is where I destroy the idea that only queer men do drag. Drag is extremely inclusive and anyone
can join in on the fun. For example we have drag kings, bio queens, even young aspiring queens like
8 year old Lactacia are welcome. Drag kings can be defined as women and dressed as men for
performance and entertainment. Performers like Landon Cider, Robin Heartz, and Spikey Van
Dykey. Bio queens on the other hand are women dressed as an exaggerated idea of being female.
Women such as Tayla Macdonald, the girls of Drag Coven Aka Courtney Conquer and Ja'mie Queen
West, and Lucy Garland are well known in the community. As for Lactacia, the 8 year old drag
queen the young queen have recently blown up in the media and the world of drag. Lactacia and
their mother recently did an interview with Elle Magazine where they were asked how the 8 year old
got into drag, like many others including myself it all started with a little show called Rupaul's Drag
Race. Drag Race is a reality competition show where they find the next drag superstar. Much like
Americas Next Top Model, but with much more charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. Through
the growing popularity of the show it is spreading the art of drag and the magic behind it. Not only
has casted a spell on Lactacia and I, but millions of others as well. Because of the shows rapidly

Drag Queens Research Paper
Introduction
This report consists of How a Subculture Defines itself. Which means the difference of it from its
main stream and how it presents itself from the mainstream and the values of it. We as a group has
picked Drag queens as our subculture and we show how once a forbidden culture turned the world
around to be accepted in its place. It shows us the comparison between the history and the present
how subcultures break of from mainstream cultures and adapt into their own cultures due to
different peoples believes, reactions and knowledge.

It can be seen as a response to the excessively performativity nature of southern femininity, a
relation already mapped in popular discourse when Suzanne Sugar baker compares wig styles with a
drag queen. Drag modalities repurpose white southern femininity, modeling new ways of being
southern that can sometimes break free from a tired old recycling of the myths of the lady and the
belle.
Ethnicity and Race
Ethnic drag includes not only cross–racial casting on the stage, and also more generally, the
performance of "race" as masquerade. While many of the performances I examine occur in places
that are less official than the state– subsidized theater, they are therefore no less ritualized.
The performances of "race" in a country whose history embodies racism's worst excesses and where,
after the Holocaust, the very race was excised from public language and political analysis.
Ethnic drag reveals what this linguistic break conceals, namely the continuities, permutations, and
contradictions of racial feelings. As a figure of substitution, ethnic drag both exposes and disavows
traumatic holes in the social fabric, and facilitates both historical denial and collective

Drag Culture Essay
In the words of RuPaul, one of the most well known drag queens in todays times, "If you can't love
yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love someone else." Since the 1500s, men can be seen
dressing up as women for entertainment and comedic effect, but since then drag has evolved from
just grand performances to a symbol for acceptance and individuality. Recently, drag has been
dissected and looked at under a microscope by those who only see what is on the sparkly surface.
What has been found is that drag culture is much more that its initial appearance, but that there is an
entire set of values that define what drag truly is, one of which, and probably the most popular, is
being confident in ones identity. Being able to take on an alter ... Show more content on

However, this show has recently taken over social media and has changed the way society views
drag as well as what it stands for. Being able to get a first hand look at these men's personal stories
as well as being able to see their identity and what it means to them has given society a clearer and
deeper understanding as to what drag really is. The second factor that has influenced the popularity
of drag is the recent increase in the voice of the LGBTQ+ community. Seeing that the majority of
drag queens are either gay or transgender men to women, the gay community and drag culture go
hand in hand. An article for the Huffington Post explains that "a series of events that happen in cities
big and small that celebrates being gay in a straight world. It's a powerful symbolic action that
started after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City when gays fought back against police
brutality. Since then Gay Pride, which is usually the whole month of June, has expanded around the
globe" (Wong 1). Now that more eyes and ears have turned toward the LGTBQ+ community, more
people are starting to learn about concepts such as drag. Society is starting to understand that it is
much more than sparkly outfits, but rather a creative outlet and a place where men can display an
identity that they are confident in. As previously stated, drag has been present in history since the
1500's when men would portray women in theater. But as the

Analysis Of Mendoza-Denton's Homegirls
Gender is socially constructed whereby men and women are explicitly organized and conceptualized
by social groups. Women are negatively stereotyped as being 'feminine' and are socially stigmatized
if they fail to conform to this culturally specific concept of being a woman. On the other hand, men
are expected to portray power and assertiveness that has become largely accepted by society as part
of a man's identity. In Mendoza–Denton's Homegirls (2014), the gang girls demonstrate power in a
unique and socially unacceptable fashion. Similarly, African–American drag uses tools of feminine
gender performance to demolish the hegemonic masculine gender roles (Barrett, 1998).
Furthermore, the use of style shifting across gender demonstrates it's importance in highlighting
gender norms and acquiring power and respect. In the current discussion, I examine the similarities
and differences of gender identity between Mendoza–Denton's Homegirls (2014) and The Routledge
Sociolinguistics Reader (Meyerhoff & Schleef, 2010) with a focus on femininity, power and style
shifting.
According to Holmes and Schnurr (2006), "femininity is associated with demureness, deference, and
lack of power and influence" (p. 448). This demeanour was coerced out of six gang girls on the
Geraldo talk show in 1995. The show sought out to transform these girls with the goal of
"uncovering the hidden beauty within", as marked by the show's subtitle. The girl's large white
shirts, khaki pants and Pendleton plaid wool

The Art Of Drag And Female Impersonation
From Shakespeare to the Stonewall march, the art of drag or female impersonation has always had
its place in popular culture. After centuries of actors performing and perfecting this craft, drag and
female impersonation has found its way into the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer
(LGBTQ) communities. In New York City during the 1950's, the LGBTQ communities embraced
drag, and female impersonation in underground competitions and celebrations called balls. Here gay
men and transgender people would dress in elaborate costumes, and couture outfits in order to live
fantasies of superstardom, to win locally renowned titles such as: Butch queen, Realness, or
Eleganza. Until the 1980's, drag remained an underground "gay" performance art style, and was
viewed as weird or abnormal by the greater public. In 1983 a gay man named RuPaul Andre Charles
emerged in the Atlanta City punk scene, originally as a member of a grunge group called Wee Wee
Pole. The group played around with many different looks, but became known in the scene for their
"genderfuck" look.
This was an androgynous style that played with both male and female fashion and cultural
stereotypes. RuPaul soon left the Wee Wee Poles, moved to New York City, and became renowned
for his elaborate gender non–conforming looks. As he emerged into popular culture, he developed
his current more sanitized look, in order to introduce drag to the mainstream viewers. This sanitized
look was more passable, in that he strongly

Analysis Of The Film ' Rupaul ' Drag Race '
There are few reality television shows that represent males that perform in drag. RuPaul's Drag Race
(RPDR) is probably the only one. RPDR is an American reality competition show that premiered in
February of 2009. When it first started many could have viewed it as a "cheap knockoff of America's
Next Top Model," a show which had started six years ago (Lambe). Only 3.6% of people on
television are gay, so imagine how little of that percentage are drag queens (Kidd). The show is now
the highest–rated show on Logo TV. I want to argue that RuPaul's Drag Race trains its audience by
educating them on the acceptance of drag culture exhibited in the show and exposes them to the
diversity in drag culture that can impact their views of how they ... Show more content on

In the clip "Season 8 Official Promo" the viewers see that the girls know about glamor and are not
trying to hide how much money they are spending.
Citizenship is theorized as a constant pull between the "selfish demands of the consumer economy
and the selfless requirements of the political order" (Ouellette, p.69). This is applied to RPDR
because the show educates and trains the viewers to be accepting of drag culture. I can be hard to
relate to people unless you have a direct connection to them. It can be hard to understand drag
culture until you are taken behind the scenes and get to know the actual contests outside of their
runway shows. In the "Adore as a Musician clip," we see that even though they are competing
against each other, all of them are still friends and support each other. They call each other talented
and even talk about respecting each other in drag. In the "Game On!" clip we see them just after
they got critiqued by the judges, but they all ban together ad call each other talented. Drag queens
have a reputation of being petty and fake, but RPDR proves that this is just a stereotype. This clip
shows how genuine they really are on the show and how they come to each other sides. With the
cameras going backstage and showing the viewers conversations they would not hear otherwise,

Persuasive Speech About Violence Against Women
What is so special about our humanity? As human, We can express ourselves however we want, We
know the differences between right and wrong, and equal does not mean that we have to act exactly
the same. But it does mean that i have the exact same rights as you, and should be treated with the
same amount with the same amount of respect and dignity you would want to be given. It should not
matter what you look like, where you from, your gender, or who you love.
We are all different and that should be respected. Everyone should be treated equally, because
violence against women is unacceptable, because the LGBT community has gone through so much
crap but they always thrive, because undocumented immigrants are treated like human garbage for
coming into a country to build a better life for themselves and their families.
Women are 90 percent of rape victims in the united states, and 13 percent of rape victim survivors
will attempt to commit suicide. Women ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely to be raped than the
general population. Imagine that a 16 to 19 year old girl at school or at a party or somewhere. She is
getting sexually assaulted by a man that probably has 100 pounds on her, and she is lying there
helpless and now imagine that this sweet girl that was just assaulted is your child. She does not tell
you because she thinks you won't believe her but instead attempts to kill herself because she is

Sexuality Expectations In The Film But I M A Cheerleader
"But I'm a Cheerleader" tries to challenge other forms of sexuality expectations. For instance, the
use of Jan as an androgynous character helps in illustrating the idea of original expectations when
she realized she was heterosexual in a group therapy session. Her lesson teaches us not to judge and
categorize other people's sexuality based on gender. Other characters in the film believe that Jan is a
lesbian because she is masculine and her outer appearance resembles a man. However, she tries to
make herself clear by letting other characters understand her behavior even though she wore baggy
pants and played softball (Talburt 17–39). The movie uses Jan to teach how people should label
peers and define their ways of love and sexuality about their queer community. ... Show more

Mary was given a group of young people to teach and counsel them on how to deal with their
heterosexual feelings. At True Directions, the institution initiated programs that were aimed at
helping these young people in rediscovering their gender identity by performing gender associated
tasks stereotypically. The guy who meets Megan first in the camp introduces himself as an ex–gay.
Through confrontation by Mary and other counselors Megan reluctantly admits that she was a
lesbian. However, contrary to other films and movies which present their lesbian characters being
masculine, "But I'm a Cheerleader" presents Megan as feminine without trial. She loves
cheerleading and wearing pink. Megan does not pretend about who she is, she actually in her true
self. The film did not make her a stereotype. Rupaul was also one of the camp counselors with
questionable sexual identity (Homenuk n.p.). He makes the movie more hilarious and ironic since it
shows that even workers are living a lie. However, a beautiful aspect of the film is that there is no

Negative Effects Of Drag Kings
Drag performers take on the look and mannerisms of their opposite gender as a way to entertain and
inform their audiences of social issues that can be addressed with humor. Fortunately for the drag
community, there has been a recent increase in the popularity of drag queens since the TV show,
"RuPaul's Drag Race" won an Emmy in 2015. However, the female equivalent, drag kings, are given
little media attention, thus casting them into obscurity. I argue that the lack of positive media
coverage of drag kings in television, advertising, and social media, further isolates drag kings from
potential viewers and their fellow LGBTQA community, causing strife for individual performers
and their respective performing groups, and furthermore, depriving ... Show more content on

acts is needed in this male dominant society, as they inspire healing for the audience and performer

Perception as a Defining Factor in Our Lives
Perception is a defining factor in all of our lives. Perception affects the way every action, choice,
and decision we make is perceived. Though societal influences perception can be shaped based upon
bias. The world is filled with it religious, political, sexual, and gender bias just to name a few. It is
because of these biases that peoples perception is narrowed and what is deemed as "civilized" or the
"right" thing to do may not always be one hundred percent true. In the book Walden by Henry David
Thoreau we see a man who has looked past social norms and blazed his own path towards individual
enlightenment. This is again illustrated in Lars Eighner's essay, On Dumpster Diving. Here we see
an individual that practices something that most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By being able to see things this woman had thrown away Eighner was able to discover what had
happened to her. This idea illustrates the main concept of his essay which is that what we throw way
may not be waste. It still may hold worth possibly as far a usefulness goes, but it holds worth
because it shows the impact that you have made on the world. It illustrates your perceptions of what
you think waste is and what you deem damaged enough to throw away. In Thoreau's book we learn
that he has traveled away from society to try and find enlightenment in the nature surrounding
Walden pond. In the passage "Where I lived, and What I lived For" Thoreau explains where he could
have lived and why he decided to choose Walden Pond as his home. Thoreau wanted to get away fro
every perception that society had at that time period. He just wanted to escape that all and so he left
civilization and traveled to Walden where he could live a simpler, more enlightened life. Thoreau
expresses his view points on societal perceptions when he make the statement, "Let us spend one
day as deliberately as Nature, and not be thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquito's wing
that falls on the rails." (Thoreau, 421). What this means is that he believed that societal perceptions
were distracting himself as well as everyone else from true enlightenment. These distractions kept
everyday people from seeing the real beauty and wonder in they lives. It

The Re-Appropriation Of Derogatory Terms
Introduction:
The re–appropriation of derogatory terms is a widely debated subject. Some believe that derogatory
terms are always offensive and should not be used while other people believe that there is a time and
a place for such words to be used. In this paper, I will argue that the re–appropriation of derogatory
terms is ultimately beneficial for in–group members because it helps create a group and individual
identity.
General Terms:
Re–appropriated: (sometimes known as "reclaimed") when a cultural group begins to identify with
something that was used to put that group down
In–Group members: a person who identifies with a particular social group
Creating a minority identity: Every person has a unique set of social identities that ... Show more

First, re–appropriation has to be done by in–group members. Every word has a connotation and a
denotation. A denotation is the widely accepted dictionary definition of a word while a connotation
is the social meaning of a word. A connotation can change over time and even be different
depending on where you are in the world (Karru, 2006). This idea also applies to what social group
you are a part of. A connotation of a word can be wildly different depending on what social group
you are a part of. This means that it's incredibly important to note that a person has to be an in–
group member for a derogatory term to be re–appropriated. If a person who is an out–group member
uses a derogatory term, it is still considered a derogatory

Research Paper On Drag
My basic understanding of drag and gender in entertainment started my freshman year of high
school. The first time I was exposed to drag was watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring
Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. I will never forget dancing to the Time Warp with my mom and
experiencing unorthodox gender norms for the first time. It was not until my first year of college
when I started to learn more about drag. During the spring semester of my freshman year, my friend
and I would watch RuPaul's Drag Race in her apartment waiting to go to class. When we watched
RuPaul, we did not just watch the current season, we would be watching as many seasons as
possible, so I would be able to catch up and know all of the popular Queens. The first Queen that I
fell in love with on RuPaul's was Raven, the runner up from season two, or as I like to say, the real
winner of season two. The more I started getting into the show, my desire to see the Queens in
person grew. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

RuPaul's Drag Race, such as Naomi Smalls, Thorgy Thor, and Bob the Drag Queen. When attending
the shows, watching the Queens and other onlookers around the club express themselves; it helped
me realize how much I appreciate the art and how it has allowed people to be true to themselves and
their identity. The understanding of gender identity that the LGBTQ+ community and drag
community present has taught me so much about the person who I want to be when I become an
adult in the real world. The amount of love and respect that is exemplified by RuPaul and the
community has allowed me to become the ally that I want to

Gender Expression Of Drag Culture
The performance of gender roles has played a large part in society since as far back as humans have
developed civilization itself. Both men and women were expected to act in a distinct manner. These
definitions may have varied from place to place, but there was always a specified framework for
people to develop their roles in. For the purpose of this essay, I will be looking at a much more
contemporary expression of gender–that of drag queens. I will be explaining a brief history of the
drag culture, and will pose some of my own ideas on how our ideas of gender expression have
started changing within the past few decades, and how I feel gender is perceived in our community
today.

The queens accept their role in exaggerating the ideas of femininity, and really try to go the extra
mile. Not only do the physically make themselves appear hysterical; they create such intricate
personalities that use wit and humour to captivate their audiences. This contemporary alternative
often makes gay men and even drag queens themselves the butt of their jokes, and most people
enjoy these self–deprecating acts. Another end of this genre is the group of queens who embrace
their masculine bodies while still performing drag. One star that is a more subtle caricature of
feminism is the famed RuPaul. He was one of the original men who would clearly expose his male
body while donning wild wigs and heavy makeup. After this phase, he moved into what is called
"glamour drag", which is the persona that skyrocketed him into fame. He is most known for his
Dolly Parton–sized blonde wigs, high heels, and tight 'tucks' (the act of tucking your male genitalia
between your legs to make it appear as if you do not have those parts). What makes RuPaul different
than most other drag queens is that he performs his own songs, while most are known for lip–
synching. Also, rather than imitating celebrities, he has created his own drag persona. His character
is fully his; he makes it clear that he is a gay man of colour underneath pounds of fake hair and
makeup, and that he is performing this character. This character is not who he always is, though it is
a part of him. He never tries to be anyone

The Importance Of Empathetic Listening
For this assignment, we are asked to replay a conversation in our mind where empathy was needed
in order to assist the person in need. First let's define empathetic listening, empathetic listening
according to "Empathetic Listening" (2009) states, "Empathetic listening is paying attention to
another person with empathy [emotional identification, compassion, feeling, insight]. One basic
principle is to "seek to understand, before being understood." Empathetic listening is quite the useful
skill in various situations however when you are listening with empathy it is very important to listen
and think critically. The reasoning behind this is that from my personal past experiences most
situations that have called for empathetic listening were delicate situations where it was crucial to
answer in a manner that doesn't come off in the wrong way. I have found it is best to not only listen
carefully but to think carefully about your response as well. Which way you allow yourself to first
fully understand what the other person is trying to say, so you are able to respond in an appropriate
manner.

Drag Race
Findings and Discussion
RuPaul's Drag Race (RPDR) is a reality competition television series that main goal lies in finding
America's Next Drag Superstar (ANDS) by challenging drag queens with various tasks that include
creating a couture ensembles, presenting oneself tactfully on camera, and acting in parodic
challenges mocking pop culture and social norms. Each episode consists of a mini–challenge, where
a queen has the chance of winning an advantage or title of team leader, a main challenge, where
queens are judged on various skills of performance, and then a runway, where queens model
costumes or clothes based off of a certain theme and then judged on their performance as a whole.
Each form of expression represented on the show exemplifies Judith Butler's queer theory by
blurring the gender binary while also rejecting criticisms of being impediments to feminist
movements. These actions that disavow the prominent gender binary system in America reveal that
drag can be used as a tool to combat heteronormativity and promote a more progressive outlook on
gender identity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Penguin Atlas of Women in the World by Joni Seager discusses the inequality around the globe
with a focus on women with an objection to raise awareness to the public. Eager states "As we enter
the 21st century, we need public and civic leaders who will build on these feminist foundations to
make unflinching real– not rhetorical– commitments to social justice for women" (Seager 9–10).
Seager presents an intriguing idea stating that "leaders" in office must understand the full extent of
how serious this issue is; if not, human rights will not be altered. Several women today are not being
treated equally. They are harassed and bullied with harsh mental and physical abuse. On October
30th, 2014, over 220 women were raped in less than 36 hours in Tabit. The HRW (Human Rights
Watch) had been following the case with caution. Although the Tibet government has been trying to
hide this terrible case, a man told the HRW, "They said if I talked about Tabit again that I was going
to be finished. They kicked me. Tied me and hanged me up. They beat me with whips and electric
wires" (Human Rights Watch). This mass rape was claimed to be a "deliberate attack on Tabit and
the mass rape of the town's women and girls is a new low in the catalog of atrocities in Darfur"
(Human Rights Watch). The Sudanese armed forces caused a mass rape of over 200 women as a
political statement in war. One of the soldiers told a mother "You killed our man. We are going to
show you true hell" (Humans Right

Definition Essay On Identity
"I belong to the people I love, and they belong to me––they, and the love and loyalty I give them,
form my identity far more than any word or group ever could." (Veronica Roth, Allegiant). "You
should never make fun of something that a person can't change about themselves." (Phil Lester).
Both of these quotes describe the definition of identity. The definition of identity is dependent on
your personality, how you see yourself, how others see you, and how you fit into society. In my
opinion, identity is only dependent on how yourself, not what anybody else thinks of you. Identity is
your personality and how you see yourself as a person. How do I identify myself? I identify myself
with many different things. I am, apparently, smart and I am interested in math, band, choir, and
video games, so I would consider myself a nerd. Stereotypically I would also be considered a ...

We Are "All Right"
Individuals who identified as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) remained largely
silent and unseen in American culture until after the second World War. Prior to the World Wars,
many LGBT identifying Americans hid their sexual orientation out of fear and shame. Individuals
who identified as LGBT were never widely accepted and would always be discriminated against.
The Homosexual "lifestyle" was portrayed as a threat to American Society and was always thought
as to be morally wrong. Today, the LGBT community has surpassed many obstacles going through

country. I think what they did here was really wrong because for someone who is serving our
country and fighting for our freedom to not be able to enjoy their own freedom and be discharged
just for their sexual orientation even without doing something wrong to actually receive a discharge
because they couldn 't even enjoy benefits of the G.I. Bill which gave them opportunities for low–
cost mortgages and opportunities to go back to school and receive an education or receive
unemployment compensation. The discharge was just bad for them also because people didn 't want
to hire them because they had been discharged from the Military. Love was torn down and

Drag Queens : Lifestyle Or Disguise
Drag Queens: Lifestyle or Disguise Mama Ru (RuPaul Charles' Drag Queen persona) gave her
perspective on an episode of Drag Race with this quote: "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell
are you gonna love somebody else?" the aspiration with this quote, it is to show the relevance that
even with a different lifestyle, such as the "drag" life, self–love is respected in that controversial
world. Over the centuries, men dressing as women has been going on since the dawn of the theatre,
but what society do not know is the great Shakespeare, the beloved wordsmith of the English

This game initiated a backlash from many transgender activists, who were upset by the nature of the
segment and its use of the word "she male," which GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against

(Ford). A month after the episode aired, in a YouTube clip starring fellow Drag Queen Blathnaid

she–male within the Drag community versus what the Trans community would define as a "she–

At the same time the episode went viral, the ongoing conversations about language sparked by the
show reflects what Time Magazine recently called "the transgender tipping point", with
spokespeople like Laverne Cox speaking regularly to mainstream media outlets, visibility for
transgender people, especially trans women of color is on the rise (Ford). In many ways, the feud
over Drag Race seemed to rise from the visibility that LGBTQ members has increasingly achieved a
realm of recognition, and an instinct to defend the authenticity of identities. Another example figure
for the transgender community is Venus Xtravaganza (born Thomas Pellagatti), a central performer
in the documentary, Paris is Burning. During her interview she gave a very specific quote that give a
stance to her personal change and how she felt about her performance character: "I don 't feel like

Comparing The Philosophies Of Disney And Steve Jobs
The current world population is 7,400,771,744, yet there are not two people that are the exact same,
that talk the same, walk the same, breathe, blink, laugh, or think the same. Everyone has a different
outlook on life, each person has a different thought going through their head, and not two people on

The feminine is a word that describes having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with

Argumentative Pop Culture
Argument essay
Pop culture is fascinating. Whether it be a popular new movie or an album by an artist, there is
always something in store for everyone to love about it. RuPaul once said, "The point about pop
culture is that so much of it is borrowed. There's very little that's brand new. Instead, creativity today
is a kind of shopping process–picking up on and sampling things from the world around you, things
you grew up with." What he means by this is that ideas have been reused throughout music, movies,
shows, novels, etc. over time. Nowadays it is a rarity to find anything original as many ideas are
recycled or borrowed.
Music is a unique way of expressing one's self, though ideas can become recycled and borrowed by
other artists. These days, a particularly older person could hear a newly–released song and find the
music to be familiar. An artist can simply borrow the music from an older song and then incorporate
it into a new song of their own. Many artists and songwriters nowadays use this technique in their
own music. Say an older person was to hear the smash hit "Shape of You" by songwriter and singer
Ed Sheeran. They would hear a song that they once treasured from their days in the club. The song
"No Scrubs" by a high–selling music trio of the 1990's, called TLC, once wrote a song that contains
that same music. This is a perfect representation of the idea of reused music.
Most of the time, the artist to reuse the music should always have the permission to do so. There is
such thing as music plagiarism, which is just what one may think it means, stealing music without
permission from the copyright owner. Music can also sound so similar that people would believe
that there is some kind of relation to another track. A website called Consequenceofsound.net
suggests that there have been plenty of music plagiarism cases in the history of music. Cases that
slipped away easily, cases that became so serious that they involved court, and even more serious
cases resulting in the deletion of the song overall. Coldplay has always been a top–selling artist
throughout the years, with some of the most popular songs within the past decade. The 2008 smash
hit called "Viva La Vida" does contain backtracks from Joe

Drag Queen Culture In Society
The LGBTQ community can be considered to have a culture of its own but it is intertwined with
another culture, Drag Queen culture. Before starting to research topics for this ethnography, I would
have never thought of drag community as a sub–culture however they have everything that is
present in a culture. The drag community has its own customs, style of dress, interpretation of
language and symbols, ideals, and norms. Although drag queens and the queer community are
connected I don't think that you can classify them as the same culture. If you would ask people what
a drag queen is, they would probably say that it is a gay man dressed as a women. However there are
a substantial amount of drag queens who are not gay. I think that it's so easy to just classify drag
queens as one thing because in our society it can be a stereotype that gay men want to be women
and they are feminine. Gender roles play a big part of that misconception. In the journal "Drag
Queen as Angel" they are seen as a care givers and someone that will watch over you. Like angels,
the drag queens serve as messengers, defenders, and miracle workers to the earthly humans with
whom they come into contact. In our society being nurturing, kind, and enticing are traits of a
woman and being strong and unemotional are traits of a man. Also in our society clothes, makeup,
and wigs are all things for women. Some people might think why would a masculine straight man
want to be perceived as things

Gender, Social, And Social Sciences And Humanities
" gender role– is a theoretical construct in the social sciences and humanities that refers to a set of
social and behavioral norms that, within a specific culture, are widely considered to be socially
appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. Socially accepted gender roles differ widely between
different cultures."
Sex is what we are categorized based on our reproductive organs; female or male. Sex is pretty so
concrete, for the most part, unless you are born with some rare genetic sex chromosomal disorder.
Gender, it, well can be harder to determine. Gender is merely the state of being male or female. Like
with the states of water, the state of being male or female, can be manipulated or changed. With each
gender comes certain gender roles. These roles are to help accentuate one 's sex to society. Gender
roles have been around for centuries. The greatest thing we notice, when it comes to gender roles, is
how much they vary from culture to culture.

Transvestitism Essay
Transvestitism
In the last few decades, there has been a rapid change in social attitude towards so–called sexual
problems. There has been a call for the freedom to live in the style of which one chooses, so long as
no one else is harmed in the process. One area that appears little understood, however, is
transvestitism, or cross–dressing. In order to gain some knowledge about this phenomenon, there are
many aspects of transvestitism that should be examined, some being: history, societal views, the gay
versus straight issue, and women dressing as men.
Transvestitism has a long history, ranging from mythical figures to medieval saints who cross–
dressed; from the many instances of berdache in anthropological literature to historical ... Show

Why, then are most cross–dressers secretive about their affection for this? According to Dr. Peggy
Rudd (1995), most are secretive, because they have many fears related to the consequences of
having their "big secret" discovered. In general, non–participants do not consider transvestitism,
socially acceptable. Many cross–dressers fear the detrimental effects upon other family members,
and many are concerned about the possibility of losing their job as a result of "coming out."
Some cross–dressers feel guilty because society has placed them into stereotypes, including the
incorrect assumption that all cross–dressers are gay, or that all transvestites are potential
transsexuals. To the contrary, while some are gay, most cross–dressers want to share their life with a
woman, and the number of gay males is far less among crossdressers than among the general
population (Rudd, 1995). Most identify primarily as a male who has, and retains, male gender
identity. Often they are married, and the father of children. (Prince, 1971) This in itself presents the
question of whether or not to tell spouses, and/or, their children about this. Many do not, out of fear
of being seen as deviant, and perhaps losing those most dear to them. It is a natural thing for cross–
dressers to want to share all of themselves with those they love, but as there is risk of rejection,
many choose to wait until they feel comfortable that the risk has lessened, or keep it a secret forever.

Queer Theory Drag Race
Queer theory argues that drag acts work towards overthrowing patriarchal norms. The theory
emerged from homosexual studies attention to the social construction of categories of normative and
deviant sexual behaviour. Queer theory studies anything that falls into normative and deviant
categories, in particular sexual activities and identities (Klages 2005). Queer theory attempts to
break down binary thinking and fight against gender stereotypes through its rejection of labels and
its demonstration of the social action of gender identity (Hanson 2006). Queer theory believes that
gender is merely a performance that an individual of either sex can accomplish (REF). It is through

This is evident throughout RuPaul's Drag Race. The show has been critiqued for favouring certain
types of drag over others, thus not fully allowing the contestants to play with their gender identity
freely. The contestants are criticised if they do not appear feminine enough. 'Gender–fuck' drag, in
which an individual will embody both masculine and feminine characteristics, such as a beard also
with a dress, is usually criticised in the show. Contestants have been slated for their choice to wear a
suit, beard, or not wear a wig with their outfits and have been told that a 'drag queen in a suit is a
man'. This heavily supports a patriarchal dichotomous gender structure as it is based on the principle
of either looking 'feminine' or 'masculine', and that both at once is unacceptable (Jenkins 2013).
However it can be argued that dressing in drag does not solely reinforce patriarchal normalities as it
still attempts to question and challenge gender norms. By dressing in drag men are challenging the
dichotomy of gender categories, instead of just 'male' and 'female' drag queens are introducing new
categories, such as 'male that dresses female', even if these categories are still shaped by patriarchal
expectations. The success of RuPaul's Drag Race in the widespread media suggests that more
diverse gender identities are becoming more widely accepted and this realisation of the need to
stand up to patriarchal ideas is directly related to the drag

A drag show might just seem like a fun night out but there was a lot the guest speaker, Shangela,
spoke about that was really powerful. This show took part in McKnight Hall and I took three friends
with me. I could feel the excitement in the room from everyone. I had never been to a real drag

was a great event put on by CAB and others to allow college students to see a drag show and allow
students to perform their own song. Everyone receiving "Woo hoos and Screams". As excited I was
to see Shangela perform, her message and the opportunity given for student to perform was very
important. After Shangela's first song she started to speak about how important it was that everyone
was there. This was a message about opening your mind and supporting others. I believe this relates

Abuse of power is described in Brody's essay as 'playing god', that means: going beyond the power
attached to the person's role, beyond assisting those who seek the aid. I t also means to try to
redesign the world, often by rewarding the good and punishing the bad. This is what I would call
monopolizing power, regarding self superior to all others. It isn't sharing, it is domination. Brody
claims that power should be made 'culturally visible' so that experts can accept responsibility for the
use of power with a realistic understanding of all facts. I agree that power should be made visible. I
think that hidden power like commercials is an abusive power. Rabkin's definition of abuse of power
is the violation of one's right of autonomy. Rabkin accused Dr Walsh of violating Mr. Baker's right
of autonomy, thus abusing the power granted to her as a physician. I agree with Brody that Dr Walsh
was the one listening to the Bakers and supporting their decision. I also agree that the matter isn't
who is right or wrong. People have different ways of thinking, and you can look at the situations
from different perspectives and point of views, but still be unable to make a fair judgment about
who's right or wrong. The power of media and commercials is similar to the power of physicians in
many ways. Both are powers that are majorly influential, both are powers that can make a change,
good or bad. Media (commercials) does

Rupaul's Drag Diaries
There has been a long tradition of men performing as women on stage. From women not being
allowed to perform in plays, to the growth of culture and the importance of female impersonators in
the LGBT community. Female inpersinators play an interesting roll throughout history which is ever
evolving. Such as, female impersonators are consistently pushing boundaries with their larger than
life personalities, breaking the mold of a "normal society", and providing an almost realistic illusion
of a women for entertainment purposes. This is defined as a Drag Queen
Drag has long been a part of theater culture, when women weren't allowed to perform on stage, men
dressed as them and performed their roles, often as exaggerated caricatures. It is also rooted in
tradition and multiple different cultures. "In his book Drag Diaries, Jonathan David focuses on two
long–ago origin points: ancient ceremonies (Native American, indigenous South American, and
Ancient Egyptian) and Japanese theater. David writes that "cross–dressing was widely documented
among the Aztecs, Incas, and Egyptians, among other great civilizations of the past, and exists today
in tribal ceremonies around the world. Imagine religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

RuPaul has appeared in many movies and tv shows, slowly building credibility. In 2009, "Rupaul's
Drag Race" was born. It aired on LOGO until last year when VH1 has brought it to their channel. It
has been broadcast to millions of people because of this. With the show coming to television in this
way it has made people feel more connected to drag in ways that weren't available before. This is a
big deal because only in recent years had gay marriage been legal. Drag Race coming to television
helps to normalize the LGBT community. It also helps people who are not directly in the community
to better understand why these things are important and

The Concept Of Gender And Gender Identity

  • 1. The Concept of Gender and Gender Identity I am interested in the concept of gender and the deeper meaning of being considered a transgendered person. I feel that a lot of people do not know or care to know about these topics on a more in depth level. People who close their eyes to the idea that a person could be born with the physical aspects of a male yet have the psychological aspects of a female and vice versa, tend to be the ones who say that those people are going against nature or god. Discriminating against people on the principles that their view on the matter is right and their main source of information is the bible. I read posts on a weekly basis that have the writer angrily ranting on an ignorant comment made by another person. The posts usually give a very detailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That does not stop most Americans from group up people who are transgendered or those cross– dress and those who are lesbian, gay, or bi–sexual into the same categories. This allows those more intolerant of social differences to justify discriminating people of transgender or gay backgrounds under the guise of religious views to deny employment or rights to use their services. Very much like what happened to African Americans in the 19th and 20th century. Like many other subcultures the transgender community faces discrimination. As of 2013 there are 33 states in America that have no state laws protecting transgender people from being fired from the work place. According to Wikipedia (transgender), a federal bill to protect workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity – called the Employment Non–Discrimination Act – has failed to pass several times over the past twenty years. While there is no Federal law protecting against gender discrimination. There are a few states that have their own laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender; (California, Colorado Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York and Washington and D.C). In more than half of the county a person could have a very hard time finding work or other services if they are found to be transgender. I found from my research that being ... • 3. Informative Speech On Drag Queen Good morning everyone. I'm Savannah, I hope you all are just as excited as I am to start off our speeches. I would like to take a moment and ask you all to close your and relax, take a deep breath think about a time when you felt truly comfortable, safe, and at peace. Now open your eyes. Where were you? It may be at the sunny beach, the calming lake, the lush woods, or even that warm bed you left this morning. For me that place is a club watching a drag show. Surprising right? Does anyone here know what a drag queen is? A drag queen is defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as usually a homosexual male dressing up as a woman and performing for entertainment. While that may be the case drag is so much more than just a man in makeup and a dress. The art of drag is inclusive, builds an open and safe community, and gives a platform to speak up and give back. Now this is where I destroy the idea that only queer men do drag. Drag is extremely inclusive and anyone can join in on the fun. For example we have drag kings, bio queens, even young aspiring queens like 8 year old Lactacia are welcome. Drag kings can be defined as women and dressed as men for performance and entertainment. Performers like Landon Cider, Robin Heartz, and Spikey Van Dykey. Bio queens on the other hand are women dressed as an exaggerated idea of being female. Women such as Tayla Macdonald, the girls of Drag Coven Aka Courtney Conquer and Ja'mie Queen West, and Lucy Garland are well known in the community. As for Lactacia, the 8 year old drag queen the young queen have recently blown up in the media and the world of drag. Lactacia and their mother recently did an interview with Elle Magazine where they were asked how the 8 year old got into drag, like many others including myself it all started with a little show called Rupaul's Drag Race. Drag Race is a reality competition show where they find the next drag superstar. Much like Americas Next Top Model, but with much more charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. Through the growing popularity of the show it is spreading the art of drag and the magic behind it. Not only has casted a spell on Lactacia and I, but millions of others as well. Because of the shows rapidly growing popularity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Drag Queens Research Paper Introduction This report consists of How a Subculture Defines itself. Which means the difference of it from its main stream and how it presents itself from the mainstream and the values of it. We as a group has picked Drag queens as our subculture and we show how once a forbidden culture turned the world around to be accepted in its place. It shows us the comparison between the history and the present how subcultures break of from mainstream cultures and adapt into their own cultures due to different peoples believes, reactions and knowledge. Definition Drag Queens are considered as men who impersonate women for purposes of entertainment. Mostly some consider it as an entertainment but some consider it as a artistic expression. Drag ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be seen as a response to the excessively performativity nature of southern femininity, a relation already mapped in popular discourse when Suzanne Sugar baker compares wig styles with a drag queen. Drag modalities repurpose white southern femininity, modeling new ways of being southern that can sometimes break free from a tired old recycling of the myths of the lady and the belle. Ethnicity and Race Ethnic drag includes not only cross–racial casting on the stage, and also more generally, the performance of "race" as masquerade. While many of the performances I examine occur in places that are less official than the state– subsidized theater, they are therefore no less ritualized. The performances of "race" in a country whose history embodies racism's worst excesses and where, after the Holocaust, the very race was excised from public language and political analysis. Ethnic drag reveals what this linguistic break conceals, namely the continuities, permutations, and contradictions of racial feelings. As a figure of substitution, ethnic drag both exposes and disavows traumatic holes in the social fabric, and facilitates both historical denial and collective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Drag Culture Essay In the words of RuPaul, one of the most well known drag queens in todays times, "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love someone else." Since the 1500s, men can be seen dressing up as women for entertainment and comedic effect, but since then drag has evolved from just grand performances to a symbol for acceptance and individuality. Recently, drag has been dissected and looked at under a microscope by those who only see what is on the sparkly surface. What has been found is that drag culture is much more that its initial appearance, but that there is an entire set of values that define what drag truly is, one of which, and probably the most popular, is being confident in ones identity. Being able to take on an alter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this show has recently taken over social media and has changed the way society views drag as well as what it stands for. Being able to get a first hand look at these men's personal stories as well as being able to see their identity and what it means to them has given society a clearer and deeper understanding as to what drag really is. The second factor that has influenced the popularity of drag is the recent increase in the voice of the LGBTQ+ community. Seeing that the majority of drag queens are either gay or transgender men to women, the gay community and drag culture go hand in hand. An article for the Huffington Post explains that "a series of events that happen in cities big and small that celebrates being gay in a straight world. It's a powerful symbolic action that started after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City when gays fought back against police brutality. Since then Gay Pride, which is usually the whole month of June, has expanded around the globe" (Wong 1). Now that more eyes and ears have turned toward the LGTBQ+ community, more people are starting to learn about concepts such as drag. Society is starting to understand that it is much more than sparkly outfits, but rather a creative outlet and a place where men can display an identity that they are confident in. As previously stated, drag has been present in history since the 1500's when men would portray women in theater. But as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Analysis Of Mendoza-Denton's Homegirls Gender is socially constructed whereby men and women are explicitly organized and conceptualized by social groups. Women are negatively stereotyped as being 'feminine' and are socially stigmatized if they fail to conform to this culturally specific concept of being a woman. On the other hand, men are expected to portray power and assertiveness that has become largely accepted by society as part of a man's identity. In Mendoza–Denton's Homegirls (2014), the gang girls demonstrate power in a unique and socially unacceptable fashion. Similarly, African–American drag uses tools of feminine gender performance to demolish the hegemonic masculine gender roles (Barrett, 1998). Furthermore, the use of style shifting across gender demonstrates it's importance in highlighting gender norms and acquiring power and respect. In the current discussion, I examine the similarities and differences of gender identity between Mendoza–Denton's Homegirls (2014) and The Routledge Sociolinguistics Reader (Meyerhoff & Schleef, 2010) with a focus on femininity, power and style shifting. According to Holmes and Schnurr (2006), "femininity is associated with demureness, deference, and lack of power and influence" (p. 448). This demeanour was coerced out of six gang girls on the Geraldo talk show in 1995. The show sought out to transform these girls with the goal of "uncovering the hidden beauty within", as marked by the show's subtitle. The girl's large white shirts, khaki pants and Pendleton plaid wool ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Art Of Drag And Female Impersonation From Shakespeare to the Stonewall march, the art of drag or female impersonation has always had its place in popular culture. After centuries of actors performing and perfecting this craft, drag and female impersonation has found its way into the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) communities. In New York City during the 1950's, the LGBTQ communities embraced drag, and female impersonation in underground competitions and celebrations called balls. Here gay men and transgender people would dress in elaborate costumes, and couture outfits in order to live fantasies of superstardom, to win locally renowned titles such as: Butch queen, Realness, or Eleganza. Until the 1980's, drag remained an underground "gay" performance art style, and was viewed as weird or abnormal by the greater public. In 1983 a gay man named RuPaul Andre Charles emerged in the Atlanta City punk scene, originally as a member of a grunge group called Wee Wee Pole. The group played around with many different looks, but became known in the scene for their "genderfuck" look. This was an androgynous style that played with both male and female fashion and cultural stereotypes. RuPaul soon left the Wee Wee Poles, moved to New York City, and became renowned for his elaborate gender non–conforming looks. As he emerged into popular culture, he developed his current more sanitized look, in order to introduce drag to the mainstream viewers. This sanitized look was more passable, in that he strongly ... • 13. Analysis Of The Film ' Rupaul ' Drag Race ' There are few reality television shows that represent males that perform in drag. RuPaul's Drag Race (RPDR) is probably the only one. RPDR is an American reality competition show that premiered in February of 2009. When it first started many could have viewed it as a "cheap knockoff of America's Next Top Model," a show which had started six years ago (Lambe). Only 3.6% of people on television are gay, so imagine how little of that percentage are drag queens (Kidd). The show is now the highest–rated show on Logo TV. I want to argue that RuPaul's Drag Race trains its audience by educating them on the acceptance of drag culture exhibited in the show and exposes them to the diversity in drag culture that can impact their views of how they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the clip "Season 8 Official Promo" the viewers see that the girls know about glamor and are not trying to hide how much money they are spending. Citizenship is theorized as a constant pull between the "selfish demands of the consumer economy and the selfless requirements of the political order" (Ouellette, p.69). This is applied to RPDR because the show educates and trains the viewers to be accepting of drag culture. I can be hard to relate to people unless you have a direct connection to them. It can be hard to understand drag culture until you are taken behind the scenes and get to know the actual contests outside of their runway shows. • 15. Persuasive Speech About Violence Against Women What is so special about our humanity? As human, We can express ourselves however we want, We know the differences between right and wrong, and equal does not mean that we have to act exactly the same. But it does mean that i have the exact same rights as you, and should be treated with the same amount with the same amount of respect and dignity you would want to be given. It should not matter what you look like, where you from, your gender, or who you love. We are all different and that should be respected. Everyone should be treated equally, because violence against women is unacceptable, because the LGBT community has gone through so much crap but they always thrive, because undocumented immigrants are treated like human garbage for coming into a country to build a better life for themselves and their families. Women are 90 percent of rape victims in the united states, and 13 percent of rape victim survivors will attempt to commit suicide. Women ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely to be raped than the general population. Imagine that a 16 to 19 year old girl at school or at a party or somewhere. She is getting sexually assaulted by a man that probably has 100 pounds on her, and she is lying there helpless and now imagine that this sweet girl that was just assaulted is your child. For instance, the use of Jan as an androgynous character helps in illustrating the idea of original expectations when she realized she was heterosexual in a group therapy session. Her lesson teaches us not to judge and categorize other people's sexuality based on gender. Other characters in the film believe that Jan is a lesbian because she is masculine and her outer appearance resembles a man. However, she tries to make herself clear by letting other characters understand her behavior even though she wore baggy pants and played softball (Talburt 17–39). However, contrary to other films and movies which present their lesbian characters being masculine, "But I'm a Cheerleader" presents Megan as feminine without trial. She loves cheerleading and wearing pink. Megan does not pretend about who she is, she actually in her true self. The film did not make her a stereotype. Negative Effects Of Drag Kings Drag performers take on the look and mannerisms of their opposite gender as a way to entertain and inform their audiences of social issues that can be addressed with humor. Fortunately for the drag community, there has been a recent increase in the popularity of drag queens since the TV show, "RuPaul's Drag Race" won an Emmy in 2015. However, the female equivalent, drag kings, are given little media attention, thus casting them into obscurity. I argue that the lack of positive media coverage of drag kings in television, advertising, and social media, further isolates drag kings from potential viewers and their fellow LGBTQA community, causing strife for individual performers and their respective performing groups, and furthermore, depriving ... • 21. Perception as a Defining Factor in Our Lives Perception is a defining factor in all of our lives. Perception affects the way every action, choice, and decision we make is perceived. Though societal influences perception can be shaped based upon bias. The world is filled with it religious, political, sexual, and gender bias just to name a few. It is because of these biases that peoples perception is narrowed and what is deemed as "civilized" or the "right" thing to do may not always be one hundred percent true. In the book Walden by Henry David Thoreau we see a man who has looked past social norms and blazed his own path towards individual enlightenment. It still may hold worth possibly as far a usefulness goes, but it holds worth because it shows the impact that you have made on the world. It illustrates your perceptions of what you think waste is and what you deem damaged enough to throw away. In Thoreau's book we learn that he has traveled away from society to try and find enlightenment in the nature surrounding Walden pond. In the passage "Where I lived, and What I lived For" Thoreau explains where he could have lived and why he decided to choose Walden Pond as his home. Thoreau wanted to get away fro every perception that society had at that time period. He just wanted to escape that all and so he left civilization and traveled to Walden where he could live a simpler, more enlightened life. Thoreau expresses his view points on societal perceptions when he make the statement, "Let us spend one day as deliberately as Nature, and not be thrown off the track by every nutshell and mosquito's wing that falls on the rails." (Thoreau, 421). What this means is that he believed that societal perceptions were distracting himself as well as everyone else from true enlightenment. Some believe that derogatory terms are always offensive and should not be used while other people believe that there is a time and a place for such words to be used. In this paper, I will argue that the re–appropriation of derogatory terms is ultimately beneficial for in–group members because it helps create a group and individual identity. The first time I was exposed to drag was watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. I will never forget dancing to the Time Warp with my mom and experiencing unorthodox gender norms for the first time. It was not until my first year of college when I started to learn more about drag. During the spring semester of my freshman year, my friend and I would watch RuPaul's Drag Race in her apartment waiting to go to class. When we watched RuPaul, we did not just watch the current season, we would be watching as many seasons as possible, so I would be able to catch up and know all of the popular Queens. • 29. Gender Expression Of Drag Culture The performance of gender roles has played a large part in society since as far back as humans have developed civilization itself. Both men and women were expected to act in a distinct manner. These definitions may have varied from place to place, but there was always a specified framework for people to develop their roles in. For the purpose of this essay, I will be looking at a much more contemporary expression of gender–that of drag queens. I will be explaining a brief history of the drag culture, and will pose some of my own ideas on how our ideas of gender expression have started changing within the past few decades, and how I feel gender is perceived in our community today. Let me start with defining what it means to be a drag queen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The queens accept their role in exaggerating the ideas of femininity, and really try to go the extra mile. Not only do the physically make themselves appear hysterical; they create such intricate personalities that use wit and humour to captivate their audiences. This contemporary alternative often makes gay men and even drag queens themselves the butt of their jokes, and most people enjoy these self–deprecating acts. Another end of this genre is the group of queens who embrace their masculine bodies while still performing drag. One star that is a more subtle caricature of feminism is the famed RuPaul. He was one of the original men who would clearly expose his male body while donning wild wigs and heavy makeup. After this phase, he moved into what is called "glamour drag", which is the persona that skyrocketed him into fame. He is most known for his Dolly Parton–sized blonde wigs, high heels, and tight 'tucks' (the act of tucking your male genitalia between your legs to make it appear as if you do not have those parts). What makes RuPaul different than most other drag queens is that he performs his own songs, while most are known for lip– synching. Also, rather than imitating celebrities, he has created his own drag persona. His character is fully his; he makes it clear that he is a gay man of colour underneath pounds of fake hair and makeup, and that he is performing this character. First let's define empathetic listening, empathetic listening according to "Empathetic Listening" (2009) states, "Empathetic listening is paying attention to another person with empathy [emotional identification, compassion, feeling, insight]. One basic principle is to "seek to understand, before being understood." Empathetic listening is quite the useful skill in various situations however when you are listening with empathy it is very important to listen and think critically. The reasoning behind this is that from my personal past experiences most situations that have called for empathetic listening were delicate situations where it was crucial to answer in a manner that doesn't come off in the wrong way. Each episode consists of a mini–challenge, where a queen has the chance of winning an advantage or title of team leader, a main challenge, where queens are judged on various skills of performance, and then a runway, where queens model costumes or clothes based off of a certain theme and then judged on their performance as a whole. • 49. Argumentative Pop Culture Argument essay Pop culture is fascinating. Whether it be a popular new movie or an album by an artist, there is always something in store for everyone to love about it. RuPaul once said, "The point about pop culture is that so much of it is borrowed. There's very little that's brand new. Instead, creativity today is a kind of shopping process–picking up on and sampling things from the world around you, things you grew up with." What he means by this is that ideas have been reused throughout music, movies, shows, novels, etc. over time. Nowadays it is a rarity to find anything original as many ideas are recycled or borrowed. Music is a unique way of expressing one's self, though ideas can become recycled and borrowed by other artists. These days, a particularly older person could hear a newly–released song and find the music to be familiar. An artist can simply borrow the music from an older song and then incorporate it into a new song of their own. Many artists and songwriters nowadays use this technique in their own music. Say an older person was to hear the smash hit "Shape of You" by songwriter and singer Ed Sheeran. They would hear a song that they once treasured from their days in the club. The song "No Scrubs" by a high–selling music trio of the 1990's, called TLC, once wrote a song that contains that same music. This is a perfect representation of the idea of reused music. Most of the time, the artist to reuse the music should always have the permission to do so. There is such thing as music plagiarism, which is just what one may think it means, stealing music without permission from the copyright owner. Music can also sound so similar that people would believe that there is some kind of relation to another track. A website called Consequenceofsound.net suggests that there have been plenty of music plagiarism cases in the history of music. Cases that slipped away easily, cases that became so serious that they involved court, and even more serious cases resulting in the deletion of the song overall. Dictionary.com gave the definition, "An art of sound that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." This however is not my definition of music. Music, to me, is an inspiring thing. It can encourage people to become better, but it can also make a person sad and depressed. If my life was a list of songs here are some of the songs that would be playing. FIX THIS TO BE BETTER!!!!!!! To start, "Supermodel" by RuPaul brings back fun memories every time I hear it. "Supermodel" is played in the movie Lizzie McGuire and that was my favorite movie at the time. When Camille, my older sister, and I were younger we could be seen dancing to this song all the time. We ended up choreographing a dance to it and showing it to our parents over and over and over. I'm sure they were sick of it but they never said anything about it. • 53. Drag Queen Culture In Society The LGBTQ community can be considered to have a culture of its own but it is intertwined with another culture, Drag Queen culture. Before starting to research topics for this ethnography, I would have never thought of drag community as a sub–culture however they have everything that is present in a culture. The drag community has its own customs, style of dress, interpretation of language and symbols, ideals, and norms. Although drag queens and the queer community are connected I don't think that you can classify them as the same culture. If you would ask people what a drag queen is, they would probably say that it is a gay man dressed as a women. However there are a substantial amount of drag queens who are not gay. I think that it's so easy to just classify drag queens as one thing because in our society it can be a stereotype that gay men want to be women and they are feminine. Gender roles play a big part of that misconception. In the journal "Drag Queen as Angel" they are seen as a care givers and someone that will watch over you. Like angels, the drag queens serve as messengers, defenders, and miracle workers to the earthly humans with whom they come into contact. In our society being nurturing, kind, and enticing are traits of a woman and being strong and unemotional are traits of a man. Also in our society clothes, makeup, and wigs are all things for women. Some people might think why would a masculine straight man want to be perceived as things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Gender, Social, And Social Sciences And Humanities " gender role– is a theoretical construct in the social sciences and humanities that refers to a set of social and behavioral norms that, within a specific culture, are widely considered to be socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. Socially accepted gender roles differ widely between different cultures." Sex is what we are categorized based on our reproductive organs; female or male. Sex is pretty so concrete, for the most part, unless you are born with some rare genetic sex chromosomal disorder. Gender, it, well can be harder to determine. Gender is merely the state of being male or female. Like with the states of water, the state of being male or female, can be manipulated or changed. With each gender comes certain gender roles. These roles are to help accentuate one 's sex to society. Gender roles have been around for centuries. The greatest thing we notice, when it comes to gender roles, is how much they vary from culture to culture. "Since marriage constitutes slavery for women, it is clear that the women 's movement must concentrate on attacking this institution. Freedom for women cannot be won without the abolition of marriage." –– Sheila Cronin In the United States, and many patriarchal societies, the role of the women is to be the caregiver. It is not uncommon to see mothers being the predominant caretakers of home, children, and anything pertaining to family life. The father on the other hand, deals with the finances. He will ... The challenges in `All Stars 2` were very fun to watch, because of the amazing group of girls. The first challenge I will talk about took place in the second episode, `The Snatch Game`. The snatch game is a game where all the contestants impersonate a celebrity and try to match answers that were given by the guests on the show. This seasons snatch game was both good and bad. The really good impersonations were done by Katya (who played Bjork ) and Alaska ( who played Mae West ). They both studied their characters very well, they were making jokes and they looked like the celebrities they were portraying. There were a few queens who did a poor job at playing a character. One example would be Roxxxy Andrews (who played Alaska). She did a bad job because she chose to play Alaska the day of the challenge which led to a rushed look, that wasn't fully developed. • 63. Transvestitism Essay Transvestitism In the last few decades, there has been a rapid change in social attitude towards so–called sexual problems. There has been a call for the freedom to live in the style of which one chooses, so long as no one else is harmed in the process. One area that appears little understood, however, is transvestitism, or cross–dressing. In order to gain some knowledge about this phenomenon, there are many aspects of transvestitism that should be examined, some being: history, societal views, the gay versus straight issue, and women dressing as men. Transvestitism has a long history, ranging from mythical figures to medieval saints who cross– dressed; from the many instances of berdache in anthropological literature to historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why, then are most cross–dressers secretive about their affection for this? According to Dr. Peggy Rudd (1995), most are secretive, because they have many fears related to the consequences of having their "big secret" discovered. In general, non–participants do not consider transvestitism, socially acceptable. Many cross–dressers fear the detrimental effects upon other family members, and many are concerned about the possibility of losing their job as a result of "coming out." Some cross–dressers feel guilty because society has placed them into stereotypes, including the incorrect assumption that all cross–dressers are gay, or that all transvestites are potential transsexuals. To the contrary, while some are gay, most cross–dressers want to share their life with a woman, and the number of gay males is far less among crossdressers than among the general population (Rudd, 1995). Most identify primarily as a male who has, and retains, male gender identity. Often they are married, and the father of children. (Prince, 1971) This in itself presents the question of whether or not to tell spouses, and/or, their children about this. Many do not, out of fear of being seen as deviant, and perhaps losing those most dear to them. It is a natural thing for cross– dressers to want to share all of themselves with those they love, but as there is risk of rejection, many choose to wait until they feel comfortable that the risk has lessened, or keep it a secret forever. The theory emerged from homosexual studies attention to the social construction of categories of normative and deviant sexual behaviour. Queer theory studies anything that falls into normative and deviant categories, in particular sexual activities and identities (Klages 2005). Queer theory attempts to break down binary thinking and fight against gender stereotypes through its rejection of labels and its demonstration of the social action of gender identity (Hanson 2006). Queer theory believes that gender is merely a performance that an individual of either sex can accomplish (REF). It is through this fluidity that queer theory is able to open an ideological space ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is evident throughout RuPaul's Drag Race. The show has been critiqued for favouring certain types of drag over others, thus not fully allowing the contestants to play with their gender identity freely. The contestants are criticised if they do not appear feminine enough. 'Gender–fuck' drag, in which an individual will embody both masculine and feminine characteristics, such as a beard also with a dress, is usually criticised in the show. Contestants have been slated for their choice to wear a suit, beard, or not wear a wig with their outfits and have been told that a 'drag queen in a suit is a man'. This heavily supports a patriarchal dichotomous gender structure as it is based on the principle of either looking 'feminine' or 'masculine', and that both at once is unacceptable (Jenkins 2013). However it can be argued that dressing in drag does not solely reinforce patriarchal normalities as it still attempts to question and challenge gender norms. By dressing in drag men are challenging the dichotomy of gender categories, instead of just 'male' and 'female' drag queens are introducing new categories, such as 'male that dresses female', even if these categories are still shaped by patriarchal expectations. The success of RuPaul's Drag Race in the widespread media suggests that more diverse gender identities are becoming more widely accepted and this realisation of the need to stand up to patriarchal ideas is directly related to the drag ... • 71. Cause Reflection On CAB Drag Race Cause Reflection An event I have gone to on campus was entitled "CAB Drag Race featuring Shangela". This was an amazing show with wonderful words spoken by a former cast member of RuPaul's Drag Race as well as performances by fellow students. This was put on by the CAB organization and was sponsored by the Multicultural Resource Center and the Triota Honor Society. A drag show might just seem like a fun night out but there was a lot the guest speaker, Shangela, spoke about that was really powerful. This show took part in McKnight Hall and I took three friends with me. I could feel the excitement in the room from everyone. I had never been to a real drag show before, so this was a good compromise, especially since I got to see a "Rugirl" for free. This was a great event put on by CAB and others to allow college students to see a drag show and allow students to perform their own song. Everyone receiving "Woo hoos and Screams". As excited I was to see Shangela perform, her message and the opportunity given for student to perform was very important. After Shangela's first song she started to speak about how important it was that everyone was there. This was a message about opening your mind and supporting others. I believe this relates to our class because many members of the drag community are members of the LGBTQQIA community as well. This a group that my fellow classmates are a part of and it is a group that does a lot of activism in order to achieve their goals. Our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What's wrong with Michael Jackson? and other* I want to focus on a way of thinking that I think needs constant revision. This way of thinking relies on unwavering belief in its own truth, to the exclusion of other ideas. For example, it is the way of thinking existing in all religions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abuse of power is described in Brody's essay as 'playing god', that means: going beyond the power attached to the person's role, beyond assisting those who seek the aid. I t also means to try to redesign the world, often by rewarding the good and punishing the bad. This is what I would call monopolizing power, regarding self superior to all others. It isn't sharing, it is domination. Brody claims that power should be made 'culturally visible' so that experts can accept responsibility for the use of power with a realistic understanding of all facts. I agree that power should be made visible. I think that hidden power like commercials is an abusive power. Rabkin's definition of abuse of power is the violation of one's right of autonomy. Rabkin accused Dr Walsh of violating Mr. Baker's right of autonomy, thus abusing the power granted to her as a physician. I agree with Brody that Dr Walsh was the one listening to the Bakers and supporting their decision. I also agree that the matter isn't who is right or wrong. People have different ways of thinking, and you can look at the situations from different perspectives and point of views, but still be unable to make a fair judgment about who's right or wrong. The power of media and commercials is similar to the power of physicians in many ways. Both are powers that are majorly influential, both are powers that can make a change, good or bad.
