Difference Between Fashion And Fashion
In the Oxford English Dictionary, fashion is defined as the production and marketing of new styles
of goods, especially clothing and cosmetics–but in reality what is fashion? Many of us have seen
runways and elite fashion shows in the media; we have even dreamed of sitting next to fashion icons
like Anna Wintour and Rihanna while enjoying said shows. Many of us have also shopped in our
favorite stores and noticed how different our clothing may be from what we see on the runway. Why
is that you ask? The answer is simple: fashion is a complex entity that can be split into two vastly
different categories: high fashion and streetwear. Though high fashion and streetwear are seemingly
merging into one style of design and production, the two have different backgrounds, sources of
inspiration, price points and intended audiences
High fashion is comprised of two categories: haute couture and prêt–à–porter (ready–to–wear). In
World of Art: The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of Fashion and Fashion Designers, haute couture is
defined as "high quality fashion design and construction." This kind of clothing is usually one of a
kind and custom fit; official haute couture brands are determined by the trade union Chambre
Syndicale de la Haute Couture, which produces a list of brands that fit into its criteria. Before the
emergence of ready–to–wear garments in the latter half of the twentieth century, fashion was an art
that only the wealthy could afford to indulge in. However, during the late

What Is The Success Of Zara
In recent year, Zara is well–known as the world's largest retailer and the most favorite fashion
brands in the world to the people in their 20s–30s and children. Its success doesn't come from just
only what it sells but how it sells them.
The secret to Zara's achievement is mostly because of Zara deliveries fast–fashion, a model which
emphasizes its strategy in focusing on manufacturing catwalk fashion to ready–to–wear clothing
quickly and efficiently to allow customers to buy latest trend clothing at the lowest price.
"Instead of betting tomorrow's hot look, Zara can wait to see what customers are actually buying–
and make that" one analyst has said.
Most brands have to predict the trends before launching designs and figure out what and how ...

There is no advertising budget. By choosing to locate stores in the center locations, surrounded by
many high–end fashion brands, cozied in ambitions, Zara never goes unnoticed by people.
"The success of your business is based in principle on the idea of offering the latest fashions at low
prices, in turn creating a formula for cutting costs: an integrated business in which it is
manufactured, distributed and sold" – Amancio Ortega, the founder of Zara once said.
In conclusion, Zara's Marketing strategy is genius. They know how to make their products attain the
consumers' want, further than what they need, and create tremendous value for them. Often, Zara
offers sales–off programs that reward customer loyalty as in bonding relationship with them. Zara
also treasures the value of its proposition: they keep their promises by always supplying the
fashionable clothes with affordable price. As the point of marketing, creating the value for
customers and gaining that value from those. Zara has successfully achieved it, which is something
really hard to do. Their brilliant marketing strategy has brought Zara to success, now they owns over
2,100 stores across 88 countries, and globally

The Famous Fashion Entrepreneur : Hattie Carnegie
Hattie Carnegie (March 15, 1880 – February 22, 1956), Seventh Avenue 's legendary fashion
entrepreneur, once influenced American Fashion with her brilliant fashion savvy. From the 1920s to
the 1960s, her name was synonymous with high fashion, an elegant couture collection and ready to
wear lines.
Born March 15, 1886 in Vienna, Austria as Henrietta Kanengeiser, she was the second of seven
children. She emigrated with her family to the United Sates as a young girl, following a disatrous
fire that destroyed the family home in 1892. From those humble beginnings, her legend arose as she
built a $10 million fashion empire.

Her first job was working with Macy 's in 1901 at the age of 15. She began as salesclerk, and
progressed serving as a mannequin and a milliner. While at Macy 's she received the equivalent of a
fashion education, as well as sharpening her business acumen. Her passion for design, combined
with her unparralleled ability creating fashion styles, and the encouragement of her peers ensured
that the rest of her life would dedicated to fashion.
In a prudent business move, Henrietta became known by her sobriquet, 'Hattie ', and also changed
her last name to Carnegie in honor of the very successful Andrew Carnegie, one of the most
important philathropists of his age.

Haute Couture Influences Ready-to-wear
Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the
world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way
for the riches to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could
afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the
creator of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as having
leading names in today's ready–to–wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three
most important designers of the modern fashion industry.

It wasn't until Chanel started to create jackets which not only had the purpose of being worn closed,
she created jackets that looked good opened, closed or hanging over the shoulders. She emphasized
on this style by making blouses to serve the complete outfit. She was also the creator of the "Little
Black Dress", which was a relatively simple black dress made by elegant materials such as lace,
tulle, weightless silk and even embroidery in a new, more tailored way. Chanel is today world
known for its high quality designs and has women of the 21th century dependent on its classical
style (Rennolds Milbank 120–121).
Elsa Schiaparelli was another star in the 30's along with Chanel, but the contrast between them was
nothing more but interesting. Their designs were different, looked upon as day and night, but still
representing the extremes of couture, but they catered to the same clients.
Balenciaga, another well known high end designer once said: "Coco had very little taste, but it was
good. Schiap, on the other hand, had lots of it, but it was bad".
Schiaparelli created the color "shocking pink". The House of Schiaparelli struggled after World War
II as fashion had changed and Dior's New Look was in, which lead to the closing of the couture
house in 1954, but her visions still lives on in the interpretations of today's ready–to–wear (Milbank
196).

Should Students Be Allowed To Wear Hats In School Research
We should wear hats Have you ever woke up and just decided that you don't wanna get ready or do
your hair for school? Wouldn't it just be easier to throw on a hat and go. The main reason that they
don't let us wear hats already in school is because of the kids being immature while wearing hats.
That observation is based off the one day per year that they encourage us to wear crazy hats and then
it gets out of hand. Now if they would allow us to wear normal ballcaps any day of the week, it
would more than likely be fine. Although hats can be distracting, students should be allowed to wear
hats in school because they allow you to express yourself, saves you time getting ready, and it
protects your hair from the weather. First the schools

How Clothing Quantity And Quality Of Clothing

growth of a soon to be multibillion–dollar global enterprise (Major).Throughout the general public

Charles Frederick Worth, an influential designer, created the first fashion house in 1850 and is
currently known as the sole originator of haute couture (Koda et. al.).
With haute couture at its peak, the rising technological advances of the 20th century helped propel
the haute couture branch even further into an industrialized business. The sewing machine, which
was first invented in the Victorian Era, established a fast growing process of dressmaking in the
mid–19th century and the early 20th century (Ahmad).
With added technological advances including factory lines and textile chains, the haute couture
manufacturing process became quicker, but never left it's original tailoring and dressmaking roots
completely (Major). During the manufacturing process of haute couture, the first step for the
designer is to create the design either sketched or draped and cutted with muslin or toile (Koda et.
al). In continuation from this step, the design is brought to life through the tailoring and dressmaking
sectors of the fashion house. Professionally trained artisans in these areas focus on the cut, drape,
and style of the design, using sewing machines, tailoring, or dressmaking techniques to create
intricate patterns and designs with expensive and authentic fabrics, wools, and furs (Thomas). A full
design piece may take up to 150 hours to complete (Rocha). Some seamstresses, embroiderers, and
other professional artisans defy the 35 hour

1920s Fashion Research Paper
Fashion in the United States
Events occurred throughout the Roaring Twenties in the United States that changed the way people
in the 1900s would view women forever. Women in the 1900s were restricted by clothes that they
could wear. Advertisements displayed them as a maid. In the 1920s, while the men were fighting,
women's independence increased. This transformation caused a drastic change in their
appearance.Women had to perform a variety of trades that normally only men could do. Over the
course of 20 years, clothing styles changed immensely because of the closing gap between men and
women. The differing gender equality in the 1900s and the 1920s shows how fashion was influenced
throughout these time periods.

Designer Of Bottega Veneta, Designers And Clothing Companies
In the beginning, men's suits had rules: thy must be constricting and uncomfortable, and be a "sturdy
black, navy blue, or gray." Comfortable clothes were restricted to weekends and only weekends. But
in the midst of a men's wear boom, the rules, and the suits, are loosening up. Men's wardrobe in
general has evolved immensely since designers and clothing companies first began creating solely
men's wear lines of clothing. Designers and clothing companies not only have men's lines, but they
include more than just suits: slacks, button–downs, gold shirts, sports coats, polo shirts, and
relaxed–fit t–shirts are just some of the vast array of items now including in men's clothing lines.
Men are no longer being confined to the old stereotype of suits during the day, pajamas at night, and
comfortable–less formal clothes on the weekends. And as a result of this paradigm shift, this more
relaxed attitude is being applied to suits themselves. As Tomas Maier, designer of Bottega Veneta,
put it, "There's a lot of men out there who do not need those sartorial codes. They're not lawyers,
they're not working on Wall Street." In recent decades the men's suit has settled into a comfortable
rut: stiff, dark, breaking just so over the loafers, a dress code so uniform that it's often overlooked.
This becalmed style ended with the entrance of designer Thom Browne and tailor Rocco Ciccarelli.
The duo disrupted men's wear with suits "whose hemlines took up residence near the anklebone,

dressed correctly before every game. Getting ready before a softball game can be a little challenging
because there is so much to it then just putting random softball clothes on and then being ready to
play. It will take time to get use to the process of preparing yourself before each game, but you will

experiences, you will need to always make sure that you get everything ready the night before the
game because it will help you tremendously with knowing where everything is the day of the game.
No one wants to wake up looking for their uniform and then not being able to find the correct color

Viktor and Rolf are an inseparable duo in the fashion world and I was in awe the moment I saw their

information on them is in sync. When in Arnhem, The Netherlands in 1992 Viktor Horsting and Rolf

The dutch men have collaborated with Loreal to create a scent for the brand labeled Flowerbomb.

the build up of their brand the duo has recently announced some huge news.
Viktor and Rolf have recently announced that they will no longer continue in ready–to–wear and
strictly focus on haute couture. They state that ready–to–wear is "creatively restricting" (Socha,
M.,2015, February). The announcement happened after their most recent collection for fall/winter
2015/16. The show was breathtaking. Victor states that "The idea was wearable art. now that we are
concentrating on couture we wanted to emphasize very literally how we have artistic roots and how
fashion can be art in our universe."
Viktor and Rolf have been very successful at creating a name for themselves. This success has led to
interest in there haute couture lines. Because of the major breakthroughs and innovative collections
the men will continue to grow. Their strong point is art and dropping their ready to wear line will
allow them to continue to push the boundaries in fashion, inspire, and awe crowds. Viktor and Rolf
have established a name and keep living up to their title. They only continue to push and strive to
invent new concepts. I expect Viktor and Rolf to define new terms for fashion and art.

I Attend A Cultural Event
For the assignment, attend a cultural event, I choose to visit a mosque. I have been extremely
intrigued by the Arabic cultures. However, I have never spoken to a Muslim woman. Therefore, I
was very exited to visit a mosque and to attend a meeting with females who are giving a lecture
about; the woman and their Hijab. The woman who gave the tour of the mosque was a Sunni
Muslim. What is the larger culture within the Islam. The Muslim religion was very negatively in the
media the last years, and a lot of people bias and stereotype in seconds when they see a Muslim
woman wearing a Hijab. Why? Are scared of the unknown? Time to do some research and find the
woman behind the scarf.
The mosque I visited was the one closest to ASU, in 1960 the first Muslims started to go to college
and in the 70ish, they bought a house near campus so that they had a place to go to and do their
prayers. The facility did grow rapidly and in 1984. They build the mosque. The building is a copy of
the dome of the rock in Jerusalem, and the community is self–sustaining. 2500 people from every
continent visit the mosque regularly.
A Muslim has to pray five times a day, the first one when the sun during sunset and the last prayer is
during sunrise. If they feel the need, they can do extra prayers. The average prayer takes about 10
minutes, and is in Arabic. The prayer is the connection to God; you can also compare it with
meditating, finding your inner peace. I have witnessed one of those prayers, and

School Uniforms Persuasive Essay
Imagine you wake up and left 5 minutes to head to school, and you need to dress up as everyone
does differently at school. On that day, do you prefer wearing a uniform or missing class to be in a
good–looking? When people go to a school that requires a school uniform, they will notice that
nobody at a classroom likes school uniforms since fashion has become a vital part of student life.
However, who wants to hear alarm sound that goes off at 6.p.m to dress up, and who wants to get
out of warm bed in order be dressed nicely. Luckily, I was a student who had to wear a uniform and
thinks that one hour more of sleep is worth more to me than having a pretty outfit. Therefore, even
though some people believe that students should not have to wear a uniform at a school, as a lucky
student, I am the one who supports uniform.
First of all, many people who oppose school uniform claim that wearing a uniform does not allow
for students to demonstrate their individuals. However, students have an opportunity to show their
initiative in a better way. For example, attending a club or being on the sports team is a better way to
demonstrate their individuals than wearing clothes. Because wearing a school uniform creates a
sense of equality and uniforms alleviate bullying. People all are aware that we are not living in a
world that is equivalent to everyone. Therefore, at any school, there are children from families that
are rich and poor. According to Meredith Gadoury in "Uniforms,"

Persuasive Essay : The Dangers Of School Uniforms In School
Students who wear school uniforms all blend in, and no one sticks out like the sore thumb they may
be. People will not get bullied and will feel comfortable around other . Student would not be
dressing inappropriately. If the school has a code, the student would have to follow it. I also when to
the Bingham Arts Academy and have to wear a school uniform for six years of my life. School
uniforms are not all that bad to wear. Student would not have to take a lot of time in the morning to
get ready. When you wear a uniform, you wear the same thing everyday. Why spend a lot of time at
home trying to find clothes, and just have a uniform ready for you. When you have a uniform you
can sleep in the morning. You could just have to get up and put you uniform on and then go to
school.
When I went to Bigham Arts Academy I had to wear a uniform for about 6 years. The uniformed
helped me with my confidence level. I found who I was in Bingham. I did not always want to wear
the uniforms but we had our days that we could wear whatever we would like. Bingham was a
charter school and the school had a code to wear a uniform. I think that I was disciplined when I was
at school. When I wore the uniform I did not look different from all of the other students. We as
student did not get bullied as much and we were nice to each other. When we wore other clothes I
did not feel that same as if I was in a uniformed. When we wore
street clothing we had it like every other Friday. When I went to Thunder Bay I wanted to wear a
uniform. I thought that it was weird to wear street clothing. I did not was to wear street clothing. I
was so used to wear a uniform for a long time. I know that uniforms are important because they
make you more formal.
When you wear a uniform you don't see student dressing inappropriately. All the time I see student
wearing their pants to their knees or their shirts their shirts to there wastes. I think when you see
someone wearing shorts that you can see there body it's not that good looking. You don't have to see
peoples butts or their upper parts. We as student would not be judged on what we wear or get

many in an upwards trend, a trend bringing ease to all persons alike. The Civil War inadvertently
brought ready–made clothing to us, and it is here to stay. The era of ready–to–wear clothing, though
a revolution in itself, should also be viewed as a positive trend that continues to provide consumers
with time–efficient and abundant choices through advancements in machinery and new distribution
models. Though arguably the unforeseen outcome of a coincidence, the impacts of ready–made
clothing have had huge implications on our everyday lives. Thank you for your

Historical Development Of Haute Couture
This essay will be considering the historical development of haute couture by analysing Charles
Frederick Worth's (father of haute couture) key factors in the success of haute Couture. I will then
discuss Coco Chanel's thriving impact on haute couture as well as ready–to–wear caused by the
second world war. Saint Laurent's drift to ready–to–wear and the high street fashion system will also
be discussed in order to answer if haute couture is relevant in fashion today. The books I will be
analysing and referencing are 'A Cultural History of Fashion in the 20th Century' by Bonnie English,
'Couture' by Ruth Lynam, 'How Fashion Works' by Gavin Waddell. Which will thoroughly
breakdown the evolution and historical development of fashion by cultural, economic,
environmental and social changes to finally come into a conclusion.
The attraction to Englishman Charles Frederick Worth's garments caused by royalty was the origin
to the relevance and recognition of haute Couture in the 19th Century. Ruth Lynam, editor of
Couture concludes the growth of Worth's wealth, she states: "The princess was the instrument of
good fortune for Charles Worth..." (Lynam, 1972:54) What Lynam seems to be stating is the
pecuniary advantage the Princess Pauline de Metternich supported with her admiration for his
creations. The promotion of his designs are partly owed to the princess however without the
recognition perhaps haute couture wouldn't have been relevant or would not have been as effective.

Calvin Klein
An American Designer
By
Neera Bann
Calvin Richard Klein was born and raised in New York City's borough of the Bronx. He decided he
wanted to be a fashion designer at an early age, most probably as a result of the influence of his
grandmother. Leo and Flora Klein were his parents. They both worked in the grocery business.
Flora's mother, Molly Stern was an accomplished seamstress. She operated a notions shop and
tailoring business where Calvin spent a lot of time as a child. (Marsh) Calvin attended P.S 80, a
public school that a lot of other famous people attended including Penny and Gary Marshall and
Ralph Lauren. (Marsh) At P.S 80 he excelled in art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Klein's design philosophy is rooted in minimalism. This is what he is known for. He typically uses
neutral colors or earth tones and designs separates that work in many different ensembles, from day
to night and season to season. At the same time his advertising for jeans and fragrances was being
criticized, Calvin Klein clothing was receiving critical acclaim for its clean, modern lines. (Gaines)
Time magazine named Klein one of the twenty–five most influential Americans in 1996. Klein won
the prestigious Coty Award three times in a row (1973–1975), becoming the youngest designer to
ever have that honor. In 1982, 1983, and 1986 he also captured the Council of Fashion Designers of
America Award. In addition Klein built a financially strong company with the continued advice and
help of partner Barry Schwartz, who guided the company through tough financial times in the late
1980s. Few designers have rivaled his worldwide empire. (Gaines)
In late 2002, Calvin Klein, Inc. caught the eye of Phillips–Van Heusen Corporation (PVH), a
company looking to acquire a major brand. As the largest shirt maker in the United States, PVH
owned the Van Heusen, IZOD, and G.H Bass brands and had licensing agreements with Geoffrey
Beene, Arrow, DKNY, and Kenneth Cole. Under the leadership of CEO Bruce Klatsky, PVH made a
play for Calvin Klein and eventually won the battle. Under the terms of the deal, Klein

Fashion Marketing And Its Impact On Consumer 's Design...
The concept of marketing is the action or business of bringing or sending a product or commodity to
the market. (Oxford English Dictionary) Fashion Marketing differs from the marketing of other
goods because of the uniqueness of the merchandise. "According to the Parson's School of Design,
fashion marketing is the process of analyzing, developing, and marketing current fashion trends into
sales strategies." (IJMBT) In fashion marketing, consumers are the creators by virtue of their
adoption and rejection of new trends and styles. Furthermore, fashion is integral to the construction
and communication of one's social identity, helping to define the class, ethnicity, class, age, and the
gender of the wearer as a reflection of individuality. Fashion marketers must position products based
on consumer's design preference. "Fashion advertisements have their own stylistic modes and
spheres of production and consumption, involving the interrelationship of word and image among
other things." (Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion) This paper will use Gilles Lipovetsky's, The
Empire of Fashion, Ruth Iskin's "The Pan– European Flâneuse in Fin–de–Siècle Posters:
Advertising Modern Women in the City", Yuniya Kawamura's "Japanese Teens as Producers of
Street Fashion", and an article titled "Contesting the social impact of marketing: A re–
characterization of women's fashion advertising" to examine the research topic of: The power and

Importance Of School Dress Codes
How School Dress Codes are Detrimental to Girls.
In many American middle and high schools, there are rules on how you must dress. The most known
of these are that boys must wear shirts and must not show their underwear, and girls must have
shorts or skirts be fingertip length, not show shoulders or bra straps, and not show too much
cleavage. The rules vary by school, but most of these rules are geared towards young women.
College and real life do not have dress codes. Employers have dress codes so that their employees
can convey to customers what the business wants them too, but dress codes in public high schools
are sexist and teach young women that their education is less valuable than that of a man's. Firstly,
most school dress codes are aimed at girls. According to the dress code of my alma mater, Lakota
West High School, there are twelve items of clothing that are not allowed that are directed towards
girls, and only 3 that are specific to boys. There are more that are unisex, but I have singled out the
ones that are gender specific. Why are girls the ones who are more restricted by the dress code?
Imagine you are a young man getting ready for school in the morning. If your outfit doesn't have
oversized armholes, dog collars/spikes, or drug or alcohol related messages, congratulations! You're
ready for school. Now, if you're a young woman getting ready for school, your outfit must not show
your bra straps, have sleeves that cover your entire shoulder, and not have oversized armholes. Your
shorts or skirt cannot be past your fingertips, which for some girls with long arms means wearing
jeans even in 90–degree weather. Your jewelry and piercings must not be "potentially harmful" (it is
up to the staff to dictate what is and what's not), and your hair and makeup must not "disrupt" the
educational process. (Again, it is the job of the staff to decide what is disruptive, there are no set
guidelines.) It's a lot harder to get ready for school as a girl, which just adds more stress to get ready
in the morning, and gives them one other thing to worry about besides schoolwork. The reasoning
I've often heard behind makeup and not showing shoulders for girls is to not "distract" other
students. Since most

Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation
Social Media has a massive impact on a person's self–presentation because of the different trends
where everyone wants to fit in with society's expectations of what we should look like. Celebrities
are made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more toned and a lot
slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs. This then leads to
the modern generation becoming self–conscious because they feel they have to fit in and achieve an
ideal self that fits in with those around them.
Erving Goffman sees self–presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a
drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a persona
is when someone wears various personality 'masks' depending on which roles they are undertaking,
for example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them as a kind, friendly
person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their personality will
change. I wear a mask when I'm with my friends and this portrays me as a friendly, outgoing
character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive.
Alongside Goffman's idea of the 'masks', he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self–
presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we 'set out' our self–presentation,
this includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. When I'm at

The Impact Of Fashion On The Fashion Industry
In the 21st century, the fashion industry remains prominent as it continues to rise in an era of global
trade. Developing in the late 19th and early 20th century, the fashion industry was on the rise with
newer technologies that stimulated new manufacturing practices and further improved the growth of
a soon to be "multibillion–dollar global enterprise" (Major). Fashion is a an art that conveys human
expression through clothing, in which many individuals are willing to spend money on and
experience whether upscale or simple. Therefore, parts of the fashion industry affect and influence
the quantity and quality of clothing as shown by the many manufacturing processes of both the
ready–to–wear and haute couture industries, the many types of commercial advertisements and
media produced by the marketing branch, and by the profit margins of different companies within
the fashion industry.
It is evident that the quantity and quality of clothing is affected and influenced by the fashion
industry as shown by the many manufacturing processes of the haute couture branch of the fashion
industry. Originating in Europe, haute couture is defined as "high sewing," in which clothing is
made with expensive fabrics and is hand tailored by professional artisans skilled in dressmaking,
embroidery and many more (Major). In the mid–19th and the early 20th century, the haute couture
branch of fashion was at its peak with the invention of fashion houses, companies that specialize in
high fashion

Why Is Coco Chanel Rebel?
A rebel is a person who resists against the political system, authority, control or tradition and
challenges them. Coco Chanel, was a famous French fashion designer and the founder of
international fashion brand Chanel. Coco Chanel was a rebel of the 20th century as she did not
follow the fashion norms during the time in her designs. From the 1920s to the 1950s, women used
to wear corseted silhouettes that were fancy and excessive. However, Coco Chanel designed
clothing for women that were more practical, comfortable and elegant. She daringly rebelled against
many fashion restrictions for women during her time. The reason why Coco Chanel stood out
among many fashion designers is that she designed clothes for women that represented clothing
reserved for men in the twenties to the fifties. Even though her designs and style had dated at least
fifty years back, they are still accepted by the modern society, proving that her works are timeless.
Most importantly, she inspires women to dress for themselves.
Coco Chanel's real name was Gabrielle Bonhuer Chanel. She was born on 19th August 1883 in
Saumur, France. During her early life, Chanel's mother passed away when she was very young. Her
father who is a peddler, left her and her sisters in an orphanage where she ... Show more content on

The designs of the Chanel suit took inspiration from men's suit because women of that time were not
known to wear suits. In contrast with the movement restricting clothing back then for women, the
Chanel suit had provided them with movement and minimalism, creating elegance. The jacket
consists of straight cuts making it fluid to the body's movement and was designed to free women
from the cinched–in silhouettes of the fifties, which limits their body movements and also their
freedom to express themselves (Chanel, 2013). It symbolizes an independent woman who is looking

Burtons Case Study Essay
Burtons Casestudy
Managing Change
Ladislas Rice
1969–1975
1) When Rice took over as CEO at Burtons in 1969, the men 's clothing industry was beginning to
have a higher demand. Due to the Beatle 's era during the 60 's, men became more fashion
conscience. Up in till Rice was appointed, Burton 's menswear specialised in made–to–measure suits
but young males were buying more ready to wear clothes. Competition was becoming stronger,
coming from Italian designers, which offered ready to wear suits and more colourful casual clothes.
Not only were these garments ready to wear but also they were less expensive to buy. This was
becoming a serious problem for Burtons and changes had to be made.
The first decision Rice made was to switch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
St Remy a French company was bought which retailed men and women clothes. Burtons wanted to
expand in France, as the market for made–to–measure clothes still had a high demand. This was also
bought to add volume to the Burtons factory, as it wasn 't manufacturing to its full capacity due to
the slump in demand in Britain. Another acquisition was Evans Outside, which had 76 shops and
computerised stock control systems, which could help Burtons menswear deal with larger stocks
with increased productivity due to the move into ready to wear clothes. Also with the takeover the
retail skills of Cyril Spencer were acquired. Further acquisitions included Ryman Conram and Green
's. Ryman Conram sold stationary and had 75 retail outlets with four manufacturing units. Greens,
then at the beginning of its growth in the consumer market, were electrical goods retailer. In 1972, a
separate property company was established called Montage Burton Property Investment Limited.
3) Rice 's strategy of diversification wasn 't very successful; as the switch from made to measure
clothes seemed to disappear. A way of showing this, can be done by using the Kaleidoscope
analysis:
Time: Rice tried to change things to quickly which in the end slowed down the process of changing
to ready to wear clothing. His mass of takeover happened very quickly, enough time wasn 't taken to
properly assess the companies. Scope: The changes Rice implemented were to

Fit The Dress Code: Is It Important To Go To School?
Imagine getting ready for school and not being able to wear half of your clothes in your closet
because it validates the dress code. Studies show 85% of kids feel better going to school because
they get to express how they feel with what clothes they are wearing. When going shopping for
clothes, kids find it hard to pick out clothing that they can wear that meets all the dress code
requirements. It is even more difficult for kids to find clothes that they enjoy and that fit the code
rules too. Children and teens today are having more of a difficult time to decide what to wear to
school than kids ever have just because of how strict the dress code requirements are. Studies

Most people that were surveyed at Rancho Mirage High School said that we shouldn't wear
uniforms. This is because uniforms are expensive, even though they say they are free but they
actually take the money from your budget and also it depends how many kids you have at the house.
Another reason that you should not wear uniforms is that people get to loose the ability to express
themselves through clothing. According to studies uniforms are supposed to help you get to school
earlier and more often, pay attention better, and also to score better on tests, but do they really?

  • 3. Difference Between Fashion And Fashion In the Oxford English Dictionary, fashion is defined as the production and marketing of new styles of goods, especially clothing and cosmetics–but in reality what is fashion? Many of us have seen runways and elite fashion shows in the media; we have even dreamed of sitting next to fashion icons like Anna Wintour and Rihanna while enjoying said shows. Many of us have also shopped in our favorite stores and noticed how different our clothing may be from what we see on the runway. Why is that you ask? The answer is simple: fashion is a complex entity that can be split into two vastly different categories: high fashion and streetwear. Though high fashion and streetwear are seemingly merging into one style of design and production, the two have different backgrounds, sources of inspiration, price points and intended audiences High fashion is comprised of two categories: haute couture and prêt–à–porter (ready–to–wear). In World of Art: The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of Fashion and Fashion Designers, haute couture is defined as "high quality fashion design and construction." This kind of clothing is usually one of a kind and custom fit; official haute couture brands are determined by the trade union Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, which produces a list of brands that fit into its criteria. Before the emergence of ready–to–wear garments in the latter half of the twentieth century, fashion was an art that only the wealthy could afford to indulge in. However, during the late ... Its success doesn't come from just only what it sells but how it sells them. The secret to Zara's achievement is mostly because of Zara deliveries fast–fashion, a model which emphasizes its strategy in focusing on manufacturing catwalk fashion to ready–to–wear clothing quickly and efficiently to allow customers to buy latest trend clothing at the lowest price. "Instead of betting tomorrow's hot look, Zara can wait to see what customers are actually buying– and make that" one analyst has said. Most brands have to predict the trends before launching designs and figure out what and how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is no advertising budget. By choosing to locate stores in the center locations, surrounded by many high–end fashion brands, cozied in ambitions, Zara never goes unnoticed by people. "The success of your business is based in principle on the idea of offering the latest fashions at low prices, in turn creating a formula for cutting costs: an integrated business in which it is manufactured, distributed and sold" – Amancio Ortega, the founder of Zara once said. In conclusion, Zara's Marketing strategy is genius. They know how to make their products attain the consumers' want, further than what they need, and create tremendous value for them. Often, Zara offers sales–off programs that reward customer loyalty as in bonding relationship with them. Zara also treasures the value of its proposition: they keep their promises by always supplying the fashionable clothes with affordable price. As the point of marketing, creating the value for customers and gaining that value from those. Zara has successfully achieved it, which is something really hard to do. Their brilliant marketing strategy has brought Zara to success, now they owns over 2,100 stores across 88 countries, and globally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Famous Fashion Entrepreneur : Hattie Carnegie Hattie Carnegie (March 15, 1880 – February 22, 1956), Seventh Avenue 's legendary fashion entrepreneur, once influenced American Fashion with her brilliant fashion savvy. From the 1920s to the 1960s, her name was synonymous with high fashion, an elegant couture collection and ready to wear lines. Born March 15, 1886 in Vienna, Austria as Henrietta Kanengeiser, she was the second of seven children. She emigrated with her family to the United Sates as a young girl, following a disatrous fire that destroyed the family home in 1892. From those humble beginnings, her legend arose as she built a $10 million fashion empire. Hattie–Carnegie–Proof Pictured above: Hattie Carnegie Her first job was working with Macy 's in 1901 at the age of 15. She began as salesclerk, and progressed serving as a mannequin and a milliner. While at Macy 's she received the equivalent of a fashion education, as well as sharpening her business acumen. Her passion for design, combined with her unparralleled ability creating fashion styles, and the encouragement of her peers ensured that the rest of her life would dedicated to fashion. In a prudent business move, Henrietta became known by her sobriquet, 'Hattie ', and also changed her last name to Carnegie in honor of the very successful Andrew Carnegie, one of the most important philathropists of his age. • 11. Haute Couture Influences Ready-to-wear Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creator of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as having leading names in today's ready–to–wear industry. It wasn't until Chanel started to create jackets which not only had the purpose of being worn closed, she created jackets that looked good opened, closed or hanging over the shoulders. She emphasized on this style by making blouses to serve the complete outfit. She was also the creator of the "Little Black Dress", which was a relatively simple black dress made by elegant materials such as lace, tulle, weightless silk and even embroidery in a new, more tailored way. Chanel is today world known for its high quality designs and has women of the 21th century dependent on its classical style (Rennolds Milbank 120–121). Elsa Schiaparelli was another star in the 30's along with Chanel, but the contrast between them was nothing more but interesting. Their designs were different, looked upon as day and night, but still representing the extremes of couture, but they catered to the same clients. Balenciaga, another well known high end designer once said: "Coco had very little taste, but it was good. Schiap, on the other hand, had lots of it, but it was bad". Schiaparelli created the color "shocking pink". The House of Schiaparelli struggled after World War II as fashion had changed and Dior's New Look was in, which lead to the closing of the couture house in 1954, but her visions still lives on in the interpretations of today's ready–to–wear (Milbank 196). • 13. Should Students Be Allowed To Wear Hats In School Research We should wear hats Have you ever woke up and just decided that you don't wanna get ready or do your hair for school? Wouldn't it just be easier to throw on a hat and go. The main reason that they don't let us wear hats already in school is because of the kids being immature while wearing hats. That observation is based off the one day per year that they encourage us to wear crazy hats and then it gets out of hand. Now if they would allow us to wear normal ballcaps any day of the week, it would more than likely be fine. Although hats can be distracting, students should be allowed to wear hats in school because they allow you to express yourself, saves you time getting ready, and it protects your hair from the weather. Charles Frederick Worth, an influential designer, created the first fashion house in 1850 and is currently known as the sole originator of haute couture (Koda et. al.). With haute couture at its peak, the rising technological advances of the 20th century helped propel the haute couture branch even further into an industrialized business. The sewing machine, which was first invented in the Victorian Era, established a fast growing process of dressmaking in the mid–19th century and the early 20th century (Ahmad). With added technological advances including factory lines and textile chains, the haute couture manufacturing process became quicker, but never left it's original tailoring and dressmaking roots completely (Major). During the manufacturing process of haute couture, the first step for the designer is to create the design either sketched or draped and cutted with muslin or toile (Koda et. al). In continuation from this step, the design is brought to life through the tailoring and dressmaking sectors of the fashion house. Professionally trained artisans in these areas focus on the cut, drape, and style of the design, using sewing machines, tailoring, or dressmaking techniques to create intricate patterns and designs with expensive and authentic fabrics, wools, and furs (Thomas). A full design piece may take up to 150 hours to complete (Rocha). Some seamstresses, embroiderers, and other professional artisans defy the 35 hour ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Women in the 1900s were restricted by clothes that they could wear. Advertisements displayed them as a maid. In the 1920s, while the men were fighting, women's independence increased. This transformation caused a drastic change in their appearance.Women had to perform a variety of trades that normally only men could do. Over the course of 20 years, clothing styles changed immensely because of the closing gap between men and women. Comfortable clothes were restricted to weekends and only weekends. But in the midst of a men's wear boom, the rules, and the suits, are loosening up. Men's wardrobe in general has evolved immensely since designers and clothing companies first began creating solely men's wear lines of clothing. Designers and clothing companies not only have men's lines, but they include more than just suits: slacks, button–downs, gold shirts, sports coats, polo shirts, and relaxed–fit t–shirts are just some of the vast array of items now including in men's clothing lines. Men are no longer being confined to the old stereotype of suits during the day, pajamas at night, and comfortable–less formal clothes on the weekends. And as a result of this paradigm shift, this more relaxed attitude is being applied to suits themselves. As Tomas Maier, designer of Bottega Veneta, put it, "There's a lot of men out there who do not need those sartorial codes. They're not lawyers, they're not working on Wall Street." In recent decades the men's suit has settled into a comfortable rut: stiff, dark, breaking just so over the loafers, a dress code so uniform that it's often overlooked. This becalmed style ended with the entrance of designer Thom Browne and tailor Rocco Ciccarelli. The duo disrupted men's wear with suits "whose hemlines took up residence near the anklebone, ... • 32. School Uniforms Persuasive Essay Imagine you wake up and left 5 minutes to head to school, and you need to dress up as everyone does differently at school. On that day, do you prefer wearing a uniform or missing class to be in a good–looking? When people go to a school that requires a school uniform, they will notice that nobody at a classroom likes school uniforms since fashion has become a vital part of student life. However, who wants to hear alarm sound that goes off at 6.p.m to dress up, and who wants to get out of warm bed in order be dressed nicely. Luckily, I was a student who had to wear a uniform and thinks that one hour more of sleep is worth more to me than having a pretty outfit. Therefore, even though some people believe that students should not have to wear a uniform at a school, as a lucky student, I am the one who supports uniform. First of all, many people who oppose school uniform claim that wearing a uniform does not allow for students to demonstrate their individuals. However, students have an opportunity to show their initiative in a better way. For example, attending a club or being on the sports team is a better way to demonstrate their individuals than wearing clothes. Because wearing a school uniform creates a sense of equality and uniforms alleviate bullying. People all are aware that we are not living in a world that is equivalent to everyone. Therefore, at any school, there are children from families that are rich and poor. According to Meredith Gadoury in "Uniforms," ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Historical Development Of Haute Couture This essay will be considering the historical development of haute couture by analysing Charles Frederick Worth's (father of haute couture) key factors in the success of haute Couture. I will then discuss Coco Chanel's thriving impact on haute couture as well as ready–to–wear caused by the second world war. Saint Laurent's drift to ready–to–wear and the high street fashion system will also be discussed in order to answer if haute couture is relevant in fashion today. The books I will be analysing and referencing are 'A Cultural History of Fashion in the 20th Century' by Bonnie English, 'Couture' by Ruth Lynam, 'How Fashion Works' by Gavin Waddell. Which will thoroughly breakdown the evolution and historical development of fashion by cultural, economic, environmental and social changes to finally come into a conclusion. The attraction to Englishman Charles Frederick Worth's garments caused by royalty was the origin to the relevance and recognition of haute Couture in the 19th Century. Ruth Lynam, editor of Couture concludes the growth of Worth's wealth, she states: "The princess was the instrument of good fortune for Charles Worth..." (Lynam, 1972:54) What Lynam seems to be stating is the pecuniary advantage the Princess Pauline de Metternich supported with her admiration for his creations. The promotion of his designs are partly owed to the princess however without the recognition perhaps haute couture wouldn't have been relevant or would not have been as effective. The ... Furthermore, fashion is integral to the construction and communication of one's social identity, helping to define the class, ethnicity, class, age, and the gender of the wearer as a reflection of individuality. • 54. Importance Of School Dress Codes How School Dress Codes are Detrimental to Girls. In many American middle and high schools, there are rules on how you must dress. The most known of these are that boys must wear shirts and must not show their underwear, and girls must have shorts or skirts be fingertip length, not show shoulders or bra straps, and not show too much cleavage. The rules vary by school, but most of these rules are geared towards young women. College and real life do not have dress codes. Employers have dress codes so that their employees can convey to customers what the business wants them too, but dress codes in public high schools are sexist and teach young women that their education is less valuable than that of a man's. Firstly, most school dress codes are aimed at girls. According to the dress code of my alma mater, Lakota West High School, there are twelve items of clothing that are not allowed that are directed towards girls, and only 3 that are specific to boys. There are more that are unisex, but I have singled out the ones that are gender specific. Why are girls the ones who are more restricted by the dress code? Imagine you are a young man getting ready for school in the morning. If your outfit doesn't have oversized armholes, dog collars/spikes, or drug or alcohol related messages, congratulations! You're ready for school. Now, if you're a young woman getting ready for school, your outfit must not show your bra straps, have sleeves that cover your entire shoulder, and not have oversized armholes. Your shorts or skirt cannot be past your fingertips, which for some girls with long arms means wearing jeans even in 90–degree weather. Your jewelry and piercings must not be "potentially harmful" (it is up to the staff to dictate what is and what's not), and your hair and makeup must not "disrupt" the educational process. (Again, it is the job of the staff to decide what is disruptive, there are no set guidelines.) It's a lot harder to get ready for school as a girl, which just adds more stress to get ready in the morning, and gives them one other thing to worry about besides schoolwork. The reasoning I've often heard behind makeup and not showing shoulders for girls is to not "distract" other students. Since most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Impact Of Social Media On Self-Presentation Social Media has a massive impact on a person's self–presentation because of the different trends where everyone wants to fit in with society's expectations of what we should look like. Celebrities are made to be our role models, however, magazines photoshop and make them more toned and a lot slimmer, which makes young people want to make their bodies more like theirs. This then leads to the modern generation becoming self–conscious because they feel they have to fit in and achieve an ideal self that fits in with those around them. Erving Goffman sees self–presentation in six aspects, which are all related to the idea of life as a drama; persona, performance, staging, teams, role, personal style. According to Goffman, a persona is when someone wears various personality 'masks' depending on which roles they are undertaking, for example, when someone is with their friends the mask they wear defines them as a kind, friendly person whereas when they are with the family the mask will come off and their personality will change. I wear a mask when I'm with my friends and this portrays me as a friendly, outgoing character, whereas the mask I wear at home is loud, moody and unproductive. Alongside Goffman's idea of the 'masks', he also mentions staging. He suggests that our self– presentation is constructed and controlled, and it shows the way we 'set out' our self–presentation, this includes; the costume we wear, the physical locations and the props we might use. • 58. The Impact Of Fashion On The Fashion Industry In the 21st century, the fashion industry remains prominent as it continues to rise in an era of global trade. Developing in the late 19th and early 20th century, the fashion industry was on the rise with newer technologies that stimulated new manufacturing practices and further improved the growth of a soon to be "multibillion–dollar global enterprise" (Major). Fashion is a an art that conveys human expression through clothing, in which many individuals are willing to spend money on and experience whether upscale or simple. Therefore, parts of the fashion industry affect and influence the quantity and quality of clothing as shown by the many manufacturing processes of both the ready–to–wear and haute couture industries, the many types of commercial advertisements and media produced by the marketing branch, and by the profit margins of different companies within the fashion industry. It is evident that the quantity and quality of clothing is affected and influenced by the fashion industry as shown by the many manufacturing processes of the haute couture branch of the fashion industry. Originating in Europe, haute couture is defined as "high sewing," in which clothing is made with expensive fabrics and is hand tailored by professional artisans skilled in dressmaking, embroidery and many more (Major). • 60. Why Is Coco Chanel Rebel? A rebel is a person who resists against the political system, authority, control or tradition and challenges them. Coco Chanel, was a famous French fashion designer and the founder of international fashion brand Chanel. Coco Chanel was a rebel of the 20th century as she did not follow the fashion norms during the time in her designs. From the 1920s to the 1950s, women used to wear corseted silhouettes that were fancy and excessive. However, Coco Chanel designed clothing for women that were more practical, comfortable and elegant. She daringly rebelled against many fashion restrictions for women during her time. The reason why Coco Chanel stood out among many fashion designers is that she designed clothes for women that represented clothing reserved for men in the twenties to the fifties. Even though her designs and style had dated at least fifty years back, they are still accepted by the modern society, proving that her works are timeless. Most importantly, she inspires women to dress for themselves. Coco Chanel's real name was Gabrielle Bonhuer Chanel. She was born on 19th August 1883 in Saumur, France.
