The Debate About Information Freedom
Pros and cons of WikiLeak The debate about information freedom has become fiercely contested with the advent of WikiLeaks. Wikileaks is a
non–profit organization which collects original resources and publishes on the website. It provides a secure platform for whistleblowers. Some
people consider Julian Assange (leader of WikiLeaks) as a hero who has provided a platform to uncover the truth. This essay discusses the pros
and cons for the issue. In 1971, The NewYork Times and Washington Post newspapers convened hundreds of people from the politics, press, law
and academia, spending 20 days, in order to expose a secret document with 47 volumes and 7000 pages to the public (Douglas 2011). However, 39
years later, on 28th November 2010, according to its official website, WikiLeaks released 251,287 United States embassy cables, including 15,652
secret classified cables in one night. It claims that it is the largest activity ever to publish large–scale documents(Wikileaks, 2010). It is acknowledged
that internet strengthens the power of a single group to spread an idea and reveal the truth. Based on the open platform, small groups or individuals,
like Wikileaks, play greater roles in the information freedom. The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) announces an official statement
on its website which declares that Wikileaks is crucial to assist keeping government and corporations transparent (APC, 2010). As is stated on its
website, the goal of WikiLeaks is to bring

proceedings remains subject to the will of that government which controls the data or the site. Since 1965, at the federal level, the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) has been the vital basis for access claims, many of which have been litigated with varying results.
Among the nine statutory exemptions to a citizen's right of access under FOIA, those most likely to precipitate privacy tensions are Exemptions 6 and
7c. The first of these relates to information such as personnel and medical files, the disclosure of which would "constitute a clearly unwarranted
invasion of personal privacy." Exemption 7c excludes records or information compiled for law enforcement purposes, "but only to the extent that the
production of such [materials] ... could reasonably be expected to constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy."
In the major decision construing and applying Exemption 7c, United States Department of Justice v. Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press,
489 U.S. 749 (1989), the Supreme Court noted the need, under the statute, to balance the interests of openness and accountability against the statutory
recognition of individual privacy. The justices unanimously rejected claims of access to a suspect's rap sheet, noting the vital distinction (in FOIA)
between the statute's "purpose to ensure that the Government's activities be opened to the sharp eye of public scrutiny" and the contrasting claim that

Freedom Of Information, Opinion And Expression
12 Years A Slave and Hunger two are films by highly acclaimed director Steve McQueen. 12 years a Slave deals with the inequality and injustice that
shook the African American Nation before the civil war. The film forces viewers to face the harsh reality of slavery while also being an unflinching
look at human brutality and is an incredibly vivid and authentic portrayal of American slavery. His other film, Hunger, deals with the political injustice
and unfairness experienced by the Northern Ireland republican prisoners, who were refused to be labelled as political prisoners; including the lengths
that they were willing to go to in order to receive justice and freedom of information, opinion and expression. The two films have a common theme of
facing and overcoming injustice and inequality, which can be seen as a reflection on McQueen's values and highlight the experiences and unjust and
often unfair lifestyle that McQueen experienced while growing up and becoming the artist he is today.
McQueens first full length feature film, Hunger, begins with a prison officer, Raymon Lohan, starting to begin his journey to work. The audience is
shown glimpses into his every day routines, including washing his bloody knuckles, having a cigarette and searching the underside of his car for
possible bombs. Through these clips Margaret Thatchers condescending tone rings over the short snapshots of daily life for Lohan. "There 's no such

The Media As A Valuable Outlet For Free Expression
The social media as a valuable outlet for free expression Introduction The communications and media landscape is experiencing a profound and fast
transformation. There is a possibility of describing the evolution and development of new technologies as enterprising and open. The internet comprises
of the considered technological developments, which is the latest outlet that a considerable number of people in the world can access and use to
communicate (Maras 3). Just as other technologies before it, the internet has the power to transform the manner in which people realize the freedom to
express themselves. Any person that can access the internet can create, share or edit their individual information or other people's content. The flare–up
of digital communication, especially through the social media allows citizens to participate in public debates on a level unparalleled historically. The
right to free expression rests upon public communication platforms, which is essential for the realization of the desired effects. Increasingly, the social
media is playing its role as a platform through which individuals can express their wide range views to a considerable number of people. Through the
social media, users can create and shape information. For this reason, the social media is becoming a viral actor by encouraging people to center their
attention to particular issues. Additionally, the social media strikes a partisan position without regards for the traditional journalistic

Charlottesville Protests Argument Analysis
Since the beginning of the Internet's birth as ARPANET in 1969, communication has improved massively. As with all great wonders there comes a
cost–the Internet is slowly becoming much more regulated and observed. With the Internet, the government, whether it be local or national, is slowly
progressing towards an Orwellian future. It is extremely difficult to situate borders for privacy, and that brings multiple questions to the table. Is it
moral to allow people like white supremacists an unchecked platform to offer their ideas? Is it okay for the government to censor content it deems
immoral? Will observing and profiling people actually help counter any threat of terrorism? In order for such significant issues to be dealt with, we the
people must learn to adapt.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Richard Spencer, a famous white supremacist, believes only the hands of the government can actually intervene with an issue of this scale. Jillian
York, director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation feels that the morality of preventing certain people from
having a platform should not be discussed at the moment, and on the contrary, there should be a conversation on "who gets to decide that." Silicon
Valley companies must be the party to provide a neutral ground for people across the belief spectrum. Networks should enforce rules and regulations

Censorship Freedom Of The Internet
Censorship the Freedom of the Internet? The government controls much of what we can and can't do, and also how and when we do it. For
instance "taxes", we all have to pay a certain amount to the government on a specific day where the IRS and their officials can determine how
much we have to pay. The state control our cars through smog checks and how fast we can drive on the roads through tickets and fines. When the
government has all of this control over us, should we give them more power? A power to control what is allowed to be posted or entered into one of
the greatest informational tools in the history of mankind? The answer is simply no; they should not be allowed that power. In the wise words of
Benjamin Franklin "those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one" If we give the government the power to
censor the internet, we have lost the right for freedom of speech, expression, and other ability's that we will lose having big brother hold our hand as
we navigate through the massive index that is know as the internet. The Internet is a great tool and essential in every day lives but it can also be a
very dangerous thing if you are not careful. But the same thing goes for every other tool such as a hammer or a nail gun. Everything just has to be
used properly in the way that is intended by each individual user in the way that the creator wanted the website/anything to use it. No one should be

Censorship Essay
Censorship is defined as the act or practice of removing obscene, vulgar, and highly objectionable material from things we encounter every day.
Whether it is on TV, in music, books, or on the Internet censorship is an inescapable part of our lives. Free expression is one of the basic roots that are

There is no question that the internet has had a tremendous impact on today's society. The internet was first invented in the early 1960's with the
intention of enhancing the computers used by our nation's military. This first form of internet was named "Arpanet" and was successfully established
in the 1970. In its early stages Arpanet could only be seen at military bases and a few college campuses. As time went on many private companies
began to show interest in the internet as its popularity was steadily growing. The number of host computers which store information and relay
communications to internet users went from 23 hosts in 1971 to 10 million hosts in 1996. Today approximately 200 million people in over 150
countries are connected to the internet. As a new generation grows up as accustomed to communicating through a keyboard, life on the Internet will
become an increasingly important part of life on Earth.2
President Clinton signed the Communications Decency Act on February, 8th 1996 sparking a great debate over the constitutionality of the act. After

Vinton Cerf's Argument Analysis
Op–Ed Contributor Vinton Cerf, a renowned computer scientist has authored an article for the New York Times opposing the Internets status as a
human right. While Cerf, as much as anyone, recognizes the impact of the Internet, his argument stems from a purely mechanical standpoint and fails
to depict the Internet in any kind of humanistic light. Access to public information should never be transgressed on. Far more than any other
technology, the Internet should be regarded and protected as a civil right because it permits individuals ubiquitously to practice free speech.
"Technology is an enabler of rights, not a right itself," says Cerf.
He divides his article into two segments to clarify his point. First off, the argument that the Internet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One illustration used to back this argument states that at one era in time, it was hard to get by without a horse. However, the central human right to
recognize here, is not the right to have a horse, but the observable right to make a living. Every man or woman has a fundamental liberty to work at
there own stride to better themselves.
While technologies are often a divisionary status between people, it does not mean that any piece of tech is necessarily a human right. Human rights
must be fundamental to our existence, like obtainable food or water. Access to things like electricity, the internet, or even a wheel are not. Cerf makes
a very solid point in this regard.
The second point made is less valid, admittedly so. It states that the Internet is merely a tool not to be considered a civil right at all. Reading, "Internet
access is always just a tool for obtaining something else more important," though he does admit, "the argument that it is a civil right is ... a stronger
one than that it is a human right." This is the point that I feel that I must break off from his viewpoint. Civil rights, which safeguard our personal
liberties, are extensive and ever–changing because information technology distends the intricacy of communicated needs and the knowledge base
necessary to complete civic duties. This is made inherently clearer now by present day challenges

The Importance Of Monitoring The Internet
In the United States of America, we enjoy many freedoms such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Today, we could rightly add freedom
of internet use. However, with every freedom comes those who would abuse it. Cyberbullies, hackers, ransomware users, etc. Does this abuse of the
internet indicate that the U.S. Government has a duty to protect its citizens by monitoring internet content?
Unless and until we give up our freedom of the internet the duty of monitoring it is ours. Giving that responsibility to the government would actually
pose several problems as well as a solution. For one thing, the government does not have the ability to personally read and check everything that is
said or done on the internet. That being said, monitoring would be done using a key word system. Words such as blast, bomb, ammo, and guns could
cause the user to either investigated or the context of the phase or word would have to be personally read and evaluated. This would pose a problem
of personal privacy. Also, if the monitors were human, they would have to be completely non–biased have a standard of right and wrong. Furthermore,
hiding messages through internet encryption would be relatively simple for many people. Another concern is the government takeover of the media.
Since many news broadcasters use the internet as their broadcasting service it would be trivially easy for the government to control news output.
With all that in mind, the internet should not go unmonitored.

The Social and Cultural Implications of Internet to our Society This research paper aims to make readers understand the implications of having internet
in our society. It will further enhance the knowledge that we have on having the Internet part of each and everyone 's life, may it be good or bad.
Although it benefits most of us, this paper will also show the bad effects of the Internet. It will show different factors on to which the Internet can be
beneficiary or disadvantageous. It will also relate the benefits and disadvantages to our society today. People, nowadays, turn to the Internet to assist us
with our needs, may it be big or small. It has effectively changed the life and the way the world communicates through the media. Internet access can be
acquired by anyone. We have grown dependent on it, thus, making it part of our society. But the question here is, what are the consequences of our
continuous dependency? Will it affect how people view certain things? With the wide array of information on the internet, will the millions of
information help in sustaining the evolution of our society? During the start of the Internet in 1981, it received numerous criticisms in terms of its role
in the growth and well being of our society. It was praised and at the same time, criticized all

Should Federal Government Be Allowed To Regulate...
Living in the twenty first century we are all exposed to things we wish we were not or things our parents wish we had not been exposed to. Things
like porn, cyberbullying, and invasion of privacy are a very real thing of today even more than it has been in the past years because our society is
very technology based and as consumers we can get our hands on anything we desire as long as we have a connection to the internet. Does this mean
that the federal government should be allowed to regulate information on the internet?
Government officials may want to regulate the internet but no matter how hard they try it will be nearly impossible to complete because of how rapid
the internet it growing. So many different sites are created everyday there is no way of keeping up with how many there are or how big the internet
actually is. Not only is the internet an ever changing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regulation of the internet restricts these rights by allowing us to only access the things the government finds acceptable. The first amendment to the
United States Constitution says that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech." As citizens, we have the freedom of speech.
Sometimes that freedom is taken to the extreme, especially in the case of the internet. If the government regulates what is displayed on the web and
who can access things, is that not taking away out rights? We are protected in the constitution, and regulating the internet is not only taking away our
freedom of expression or speech, but also out privacy. Some argue that the government regulating the internet is like securing the internet and keeping
us safe, but on other's stand point, they are also keeping things away from us that we could normally access through the

Advantages And Challenges Of Internet Of Things
INTRODUCTION:
The term Internet of Things was proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999, it is a concept originally introduced by MIT. In simple words Internet of Things
is about physical items talking to each other.
Internet of things (IOT) can be defined as a computing concept where every–day physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify
themselves to other devices. It is an integrated relationship between generic objects and the virtual world in which both can communicate and exchange
data and information. It keeps the objects interconnected, which can be identified by some assigned codes, names, locations, shapes or addresses.
Internet of things describes a world where just about anything can be connected or communicated in an intelligent fashion. Or we can say that with IOT,
the physical world is changing into a big ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

CHALLENGES FOR THE MANAGEMENT
Internet of Things brings a lot of complexity with itself. Businesses encounter multiple of barriers to adoption. Below are certain challenges which
businesses face while implementing IOT.
Complexity, Confusion and Integration Issues: Internet of things involves large number of APIs, numerous protocols and multiple platforms making
the procedures complexed and confusing. The confusion around evolving standards is almost sure to slow adoption. Slower adoption and
unanticipated development resource requirements will likely slip schedules and slow time to revenues, which will require additional funding for IOT
projects and longer runways for startups. This is the biggest challenge faced by businesses.
Trust and privacy: As IOT involves remote sensors, there is heightened sensitivity to controlling access and ownership of data. Compliance is the
major challenge for businesses, Social and political concerns in this area also hinder IOT

LEGAL PROPOSITION ON THE PUBLIC FREEDOM OF INFORMATION OF INDONESIA

This study identified several Legal defects regarding the Act on Public Freedom of Information of Indonesia. These legal defects will be explained
along with the reccomendations of remedy as below.
INTRODUCTION
After experiencing a difficult time in New Order era (1966–1998), when the civil rights to freely obtain information had been abused by the
government at that time, a glimmer of hope emerged when the government enact a new Act regarding Public Freedom of Information in 2008 (Act

One of the notable use of this rule is the "thirty year rule" by the law in United Kingdom, where the government will publicly release the cabinet
papers after thirty years they were created.
Executive Order 13526 imposed in United States is an example of a provision that handles classified informations.
SECOND: Unclear definition of public entity.
Public entity is a body that obliged to give the informations to the public. In article 1 of Act number 14 year 2008, it is mentioned that the definition of
public entity is an institution of executive, legislative, judicative, and other institutions with the function relating to the state administrative or
non–government institution of which receives budget from the state or from donation.
The definition of public entity given by the article is very broad and blur. It will only obscuring the purpose of the existence of public service. The act
itself does not regulate about the obligation of any private business entities that is under contract with public entity, considering many cases occured
because of private entities claim to acting on behalf of the government to obtain certain legal permit.
This is the fundamental weakness of the act where it does not clearly regulates the subjects of the law and still lacking further explanation regarding the
public entity. Without it, people will be very hard to obtain informations from the

The internet is a free tool that allows everyone extraordinary opportunities to express their thoughts or beliefs. Being able to express their opinion to a

used by people who seized the opportunity. Though many people use the internet to enhance their learning or to communicate, then there are number of
people sending hate speech or sending threats out in the open web with nothing to worry about. Therefore, I believe the content on the internet should

Since the internet is a huge platform, for the government to be able to regulate every single thing that would be a threat or is meant to hurt someone
is next to impossible. Many big social media companies regulate their website by algorithm, when a certain amount of people report a post that is
offensive or is meant to hurt someone emotionally, it will be taken down. According to Self–regulation of Internet Content, "Filtering technology can
empower users by allowing them to select the kinds of content they and their children are exposed to. Used wisely, this technology can help shift
control of and responsibility for harmful content from governments, regulatory agencies, and supervisory bodies to individuals" (Pg.9). Therefore,
regulating the content that is posted on the internet is a crucial step that is needed to be taken to insure that people are not able to emotionally hurt

Freedom Of Rights
Tie up to other rights:
The freedom of speech and expression, is a right, which is directly or adjacently related to other rights, imparting its limitations. These limitations
are kept so as in the public interest. The right to fair trial is nearly related to freedom of expression, as it also limits access to search for information.
The right to freedom of expression is actually important for the media or the printing press, because these organizations are considered to be the 'Voice
of People'. The actual work of the media is to awaken the people from wrongful justice.
The freedom of press is considered as the most valuable right in definitely a democratic society. The freedom to press works upon thefreedom of speech
and expression, taking along the John Milton's arguments of considering the access towards information and ideas. The media plays an important
factor in a democratic society, as it plays a special role as the barrier of the general right in the freedom of expression.
There are also some criticisms regarding the right to freedom of press. Judith Litchenberg has marked some circumstances in which freedom of press
may restrain freedom of speech. For example, ther's a condition where the press just crushes the information which is genuinely meant to reach the
public may get to the public which some or the other specimens in it. Judith argues freedom of press as a simpler form summed up by the principle of
'No money, No voice'.

The Importance Of Hate Speech On The Internet
I will examine the difficulties of regulating hate speech on the internet through legal and technological frameworks for Japan and the United States. The
Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes the freedom of expression as a human right. But the freedom of expression on the internet is subject
to certain limitations. The Internet is not devoid of different forms of deviant behavior (such as hate speech), which incite discrimination, hatred or
violence against groups or individuals on the basis of their personal attributes. The anonymity and mobility provided by the Internet has made
harassment and expressions of hate effortless and undetectable. Hate speech on the Internet is a growing problem for the United States and Japan
because it is targeting individuals on the basis of personal characteristics. Brown (2017) argues that cyberhate has three different qualities: anonymity in
the sense that individuals are not compelled to reveal aspects of their offline identity unless they wish to do so; invisibility there is a physical distance
between speaker and audience; instantaneousness provides people with almost instantaneous publishing. The justification for promoting speech is
founded on a concern for the facilitation of discourse democracy, while the rationale for preventing harm is based on a concern for human dignity.
Koontz (2017) cites the case of City of Yokosuka v. Lee Sin as an example that Japan needs to redraft the act in order to redefine hate speech on

convictions up to and including the past seven years. It does not end there. The Department of Motor Vehicles contains information that is commonly
and routinely consulted by employers, insurace companies, attorneys, and private investigators. What kind of information are these people trying to
access. Well, that would include just about everything about your car such as its make, its owner and even the lienholder if the loan for the vehicle has
not been paid in full. This information that is being collected by these third party groups is not being researched with the same intention that it was

The internet has become an integral part of our lives, linking people overseas, transmitting ideas, and propelling innovation. In order to continue the

The internet, as it stands today, serves as a medium for our entertainment, communication, and commercial needs. It is something many of us have
come to take for granted. The original intended purpose of the first "internet," however, goes back to the days of the Cold War where the ever looming

. To impose such far–reaching legislation will harm irrelevant law–abiding businesses.
This year, the House tried passing the Stop Online Piracy Act, or "SOPA." At first glance, it appears to be a reasonable bill aimed to protect the
works of artists and copyright holders. The bill, however, could easily create an atmosphere in which any individual may file a complaint and have
any site removed, cutting off the site's revenue, if "pirated" content is found on the site, regardless of whether or not the site's owners were the ones
that uploaded the file. In effect, "SOPA kills the safe harbor in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act," (Dignan) which protects sites as long as they act
in good faith and do all in their power to actively remove illegal content under copyright.
Under SOPA, the process required to respond to litigation or a complaint would likely absorb an average small host's entire yearly profit. Given the
small business nature of the hosting industry, hosting businesses are not in a position to absorb the litigation costs associated with SOPA. The
notice–and–termination procedure runs afoul of the 'prior restraint'

Free Speech On The Internet
It is about time we have some filters or establish and enforce legal ramifications on the use of the internet when hate speech is identified in all 50
states. These legal ramifications should be extended to people in authority who use information from the internet to get to their subordinates. The
internet has radically changed the way we get and disseminate information. The internet is a place to express free speech and just be yourself, but
this has many times come back to hunt users in a negative way. This paper will be looking at how schools, workplaces, and even other users misuse
the idea of free speech on the internet and why we need to filter hate speech and introduce legal ramifications for these actions.
Some schools have used their authorities to discipline students and teachers over things they posted on the internet from the privacy of their homes and
on their private time. In America, students are not supposed to lose their constitutional rights "at the schoolhouse gate." The protection of students'
rights to free speech and privacy in and out of school is essential for ensuring that schools provide both valuable education and training in our
democratic values. Unfortunately, schools continue to demonstrate a troubling willingness to cut back on students' rights. In recent years, educators
have repeatedly disciplined students for speech critical of teachers and administrators.

circumstance. Landmark sought clarity on this in a meeting with the EPA in March 2013 and later on in various briefs and responses, but the EPA
never directly responded to that point. In August, presiding U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth issued an opinion stating the EPA's "failure to deny
the allegations that personal accounts were being used to conduct official business leaves open the possibility that they were." Accompanying the
opinion was an order permitting Landmark to conduct discovery limited to the following issues: whether and to what extent the EPA administrator,
deputy administrator and/or chief of staff utilized personal e–mail accounts to conduct official business during the relevant time periods and whether
the EPA intentionally excluded those personnel from the FOIA request response. Allowing discovery is a

Persuasive Essay On Net Neutrality
The fight for net neutrality has begun again with the FCC attempting to repeal the net neutrality act protected under Title Two. what exactly does that
mean? Net neutrality is where an internet user has total unrestricted access to all internet content, and where big companies, such as Verizon or
Comcast, are legally unable to control or regulate what someone can access. Furthermore, they cannot restrict access to specific content simply due to
the fact that they disagree with the message that is being sent. This has been an ongoing battle, with one side voting against net neutrality, as they
believe it to be exactly what everyone needs and the other seeing it as a breach of their right to freedom of speech. Federal Communications
Commission, otherwise known as the FCC, voted two–to–one in May of 2017, to begin the tearing down of the net neutrality law (Rushe), that which
protected individuals from companies that purposefully slowed down service lanes so as to regulate what was being broadcasted across computers.
Chief internet official Ajit Pai at the FCC stated that he believed that the dismantling of the net neutrality laws could pave the way for a more
competitive marketplace, that which would "lift 'heavy–handed' internet regulations that overly restricted internet providers" (White). The repealing of
net neutrality seems to mainly garner approval from big companies, such as Verizon, and more recently, Comcast, companies that would do well by
the repealing of such a law. With net neutrality gone companies such as those listed above would be able to, legally, regulate and control what people
saw on the internet by slowing down or speeding up lanes depending on the affiliation the company has with that specific website (Finley). However,
even with Title II in effect, some companies have found a way to circumvent those rules in order to 'play favorites' as it were. For instance, when
AT&T customers access the Direct TV's streaming service they may find that the data extrapolated from the service used did not count towards their
current data limit's (Finley). It is also believed that with no regulations in place regarding net neutrality, companies have the potential of becoming
dictators and blocking

Right to Information Act
Executive Summary
The Indian Government, to promote transparency and accountability in the administration processes, brought into force the Right to Information Act
on October 12th, 2005. As per the Parliament of India, the purpose of the RTI Act is 'to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to
information for citizens'[i]. The Act applies to all the states and union territories of India, except Jammu and Kashmir. The Act is applicable to all
constitutional authorities – any institution or body constituted by an act of Parliament or state legislature – including the executive, judiciary and the
legislature. This act empowered the citizens of India to seek information from public authorities. In particular, the RTI act... Show more content on

What Are The Pros And Cons Of The Internet
The Internet, a Good Invention or a Bad One At All?
The Internet has been developed for two decades. It provides a new platform for goods and services to exchange among the world (Morozov, 2010).
There is no doubt that the Internet becomes one part of our daily life, especially for those developed countries. People cannot live without it because of
its wide usage. However, the Internet causes some negative impacts to our life as well as to our society. In order to discuss whether the Internet helps
in developing a better life to us, this essay will begin with examining the pros of the Internet on both the social relationship and the development of the
Internet. Then, it will consider its cons and will conclude that the Internet is a modern trend to provide a better life to us as well as our next generation.

people. With Internet of Things, additional IT–based digital services is added to those primary physical functions, which not only reach the local basis

The freedom of speech that was possible on the Internet could now be subjected to governmental approvals. For example, China is attempting to restrict

In Praise Of Not Knowing By Tim Kreker Summary
Are you at an age where you can remember a time before the internet, where you would have to search through stacks of books or encyclopedias to
find the information that you want? Some of you may be thinking "Yes, thank god for google!" and others may be thinking "Oh, the horror! I can't
imagine surviving without it!". But there are the few that reminisce about the time when you couldn't find whatever information you were looking for
in a matter of minutes. Unlike many, Tim Kreider looks back on the times before theinternet with fondness, and thinks that our easy access to
information has had some negative side effects. While Kreider raises some interesting and valid points in his article, "In Praise of Not Knowing" there

Once one question is finally answered it can raise more like you often see in mystery novels. If someone got bored of something just because they
learned the explanation for it then that shows they were never really interested to begin with. If someone is truly interested in a topic looking it up
could not only answer some of their questions it could make them like it even more and improve their interest in it. In addition if someone is curious
about something but wants to keep that curiosity to maintain that. Just because everyone has access to the internet doesn't mean everyone uses it.
The other issue with Kreider's argument is that it seems to promote ignorance. We've been taught thatknowledge is power and the internet is all the
knowledge people have accumulated over the years. The fact that we have access to gives us the ability to become better and smarter and improve
ourselves. We can find many helpful and important tips that could help you with life and other things you might experience. If you're also unsure
about something you were sharing with someone you could confirm if you were actually correct or not and not just guess. If we didn't have the
internet and weren't able to access information everyone would be relying on conjecture instead of actual facts. When people are interested in an event,
time, or person and talk about it with others, others might disagree on what actually happened you can easily figure out what is true and what is not.

Pros And Cons Of The Internet Free Speech
Is the Internet Free Speech or Should It Be Regulated
By: Amanda Hennasey
It has always been a question whether or not the internet is free speech or whether it should be regulated. Within the First Amendment of the
Constitution there is freedom of speech, but should that freedom of speech be allowed on the internet? For all American's, the freedom of speech has
always been cherished. Individual's think that when they are online they can say, be or do anything that they want and there will not be any
consequences, but that is a problem because that freedom of speech can be extremely hurtful or even dangerous. Individual's use the internet these
days to bully other individual's because it is easier to do over the internet, that way they can say or do whatever they want. This type of bullying is called

stories were fictional they should have never been put online for everyone to see because they could have been taken really serious. In one of his

Information Freedom: the Ethical Implications of Sopa
James Eckert Professor Reed PHIL 2306 2 December 2011 Information Freedom: The Ethical Implications of SOPA The Stop Online Piracy Act
(SOPA) is a U.S. House of Representatives bill with the stated purpose, "To promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by
combating the theft of U.S. property, and for other purposes." (1) SOPA proposes to accomplish those goals by allowing the U.S. Department of Justice
and copyright owners to take action against websites thought to be facilitating copyright infringement. What brought SOPA into the limelight is the
criteria it uses to determine what a copyright–infringing site is, and the methods it allows to punish those websites. It was drafted with the intention of

SOPA's provisions even ban linking to sites deemed infringing, including results from a search engine, or comments on a blog. The implications of
this lead to a decidedly unjust outcome: service providers would have no reason to defend their customers from invalid claims, supposed copyright
holders would have free reign to cripple even a law–abiding site, and even websites that make a good–faith effort to remove copyrighted content would
be unable to meet the draconian standards set forth in SOPA. SOPA has still more provisions, of a substantially more troubling nature. While the
process previously described is only related to the abilities granted to copyright holders, SOPA also has far–reaching implications for copyright
infringements that do make it into a courtroom. It allows the U.S. Department of Justice to obtain a court order against sites accused of infringing, or
facilitating infringement of copyrighted material. Once the U.S. attorney general is furnished with such an order, they have the power to force U.S.
based Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to censor the website through the Domain Name Service (DNS), as well as forcing supporting services such
as ad networks and payment processors to suspend their service to the site, and finally to force search engines from linking to an infringing site. This
provision of SOPA is by

Freedom Of Information Act Pros And Cons
The Freedom of Information Act also known as President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Public Information Act into law on the fourth of July in 1966.
"FOIA is a law that gives you the right to access information from the federal government. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the
know about their government." (foia.gov) The freedom of information act allows civilians in the United States to request information about the
government, which is not readily available, online. The only things that cannot be requested are anything that has to deal with someone's personal
privacy, the national security of the country, or about law enforcement. For a person to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act, a person
must go to the FOIA website and either fill out the form required or send an email to a person that works in the department you are attempting to get

The Freedom of Information Act has made sure that all agencies are open to the American public in the information that they deal with. The
Freedom of Information Act is such a vital tool for the people of the United States because it gives the American people the right to see what is
going on in the government. When this bill was first placed in front of President Lyndon B. Johnson, he did not sign it. It was revised and the
Senate had to pass its own version before President Johnson decided to pass the bill in to a law. The House of Representatives passed this bill with a
vote of three hundred and seven to zero. I think that the Freedom of Information Act did fulfill its goal. Hundreds of FOIA requests are made each
year to the government. This is not only significant for the people knowing what is going on in the government but it is significant to the people who
work for the government because then they can't hide as much stuff from the people

Future Of Reputation By David Solove
From that AOL software CD that arrived via snail mail, to those elaborate HTML backgrounds on Myspace, to today's latest social media sites like
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the Internet has steadily been growing and influencing society for over twenty years now. This impact has further
complicated the balance between privacy and free speech. At the core of this debate is how reputations are affected by rumors, gossip, and shaming
across the internet. In his book, future of reputation, David Solove argues, while technologies are constantly changing, human nature remains steadfast.
The law must meet the challenge to address these ever–changing technologies' effect on one's reputation and strive to protect the privacy while
ensuring the freedom of speech. Consider the case of a twenty–three–year–old Yale student who desired to be an investment banker. The ambitious man
named Aleksey took an unorthodox route to secure employment with global financial giant UBS. Along with his rather a long eleven–page resume, he
made a seven–minute video of himself and titled it, "Impossible is Nothing." Clearly, the sole purpose of the video was to secure employment with
UBS. Even though much of the content, exercising and dancing, had nothing to do with investment banking, Aleksey thought it would help him to
stand out and separate from the pack. Nowhere did he express the content was About a week after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995open for public

Internet Censorship: Just Say No
In December of 1994, a young college student named Jake Baker posted one of his fiction pieces in an alt.sex newsgroup. Usually, his contributions to
this widely–read site consisted of short stories about rape, torture, and murder of women. In this particular newsgroup post, he continued with his
usual contributions; however, he took it a bit further by writing about one of his fellow classmates, using her name and identity in the piece. Faculty
members at the University of Michigan discovered his story and later expelled him from school. Federal agents then raided his house, arrested him,

Obviously, Jane Doe couldn't ignore something like that so easily, and it was only natural that she pressedcharges. But according to the First
Amendment and federal law, Baker's threats were "unsuccessful;" therefore, no action could've (or should've) been taken against him.
In thinking about cases such as Jake Baker's, it truly would be too difficult to enforce United States standards and regulations on a global medium such
as the Internet. There are probably millions of sites out there on the Web that contain such sexual content as did Baker's story. As one University of
Michigan student mentions, "The Internet allows individuals access to a larger audience. This effectively gave Baker a larger audience for his stories,
which otherwise would have never seen them....I definitely question the wisdom of allowing just anyone access to such publishing power...but I'm not
sure that I even consider Usenet news as real media" (http://krusty.eecs.umich.edu/). The same student goes on to say that Baker's stories were reserved
only for a section entitled "alt.sex.stories" –– a place filled with sexually explicit stories –– therefore, Baker had the right to publish his offensive sex
stories, since it was contained within this separate Internet section. Usenet news may not be "real media," but I still think that the Internet would be too

If Internet Is Considered As With Its Core Definition
If internet is considered as with its core definition, then it's just a technology that can transfer data from one computer to another. That's it. But this
vague definition is also the reason for its marvelous, uncontrollable diffusion, and evolution.
Absolutely no boundaries were ever set with the internet. And since the memory in our computer kept on increasing exponentially, these small pieces of
data, first transferred, 20 years ago, turned into pictures, sound, books, shows, movies.
This enormous and we could say endless possibility of transfer offered by the internet with no boundaries at all, well it redefined the concept of a

To start off, We can see the internet as this incrediblecommunication tool that has revolutionized the speed and the effectiveness of all world trade
during the past 20 years.
In fact, the internet has literally removed a variable part of business communication.
The time taken to send or receive information isn't a preoccupation anymore.
For example, the drawings and the characteristics of a tool can be discussed between the engineering unit in the US, and the production factory in
China. And that includes exchanges of pictures, designs, figures of production cost, business plan... etc!
Very soon in the explosion of internet, various companies helped provide the demassification of internet. But this demassiffication would be like no
other before. A regular demassification process affects genre, selects viewers, and slices its general content to a more specified one, to match the taste
of their customers. The internet was totally different, by giving the publishing tools directly in the hands of users, and an easy but revolutionary
statement could be made: "One user on the internet = one content"
The internet doesn't battle over frequencies, over rights of emission; all the diffusing technology needed is already built in.
Coming back to the demassification of internet, the providers of user content cut off the last technological boundary remaining between the user, and
the publication.

Persuasive Essay On The Internet
It can be considered as one of the most valuable types of technology. During the last several years we have come to be more and more dependent on
the Internet and in particular moving huge chunks of data across large distances. The Internet allows people to communicate with each other across the
world within mere fractions of seconds with the help of E–mail and Messenger. The Internet also allows for expressing opinions and obtaining
up–to–date information from the world–wide–web. The new software is being developed every day which uses the Internet as the carrier for long
distance voice calls and video conferencing like FaceTime and Skype, which would hold the key to the future of our society. Whether someone is
sending e–mail, posting on message boards, or reading the news online, people are guaranteed the same freedom of self–expression that we enjoy
offline. In other countries, the mere act of accessing websites that criticize the government is an offense that can land you in prison. Australia, similar
to the United States, perceives and ensures a person's freedom of expression. Although, they have an alternate view on what is appropriate on the

The Internet : Freedom Of Speech Facilitated By The Internet
Freedom of speech facilitated by the internet.
The Internet challenges the privilege to an opportunity of expression. From one viewpoint, the Internet engages flexibility of expression by giving
people new methods for expressions. Then again, the free stream of data has raised the call for content control, not the minimum to limit minors'
entrance to conceivably unsafe data. This split has prompted lawful endeavors to direct substance and to new self–regulatory plans actualized by
private gatherings. The endeavors to direct substance bring up the issue of how to characterize the Internet as far as "open circle" and in like manner

Abstract e–Governance initiatives and Right to information (RTI) have been implemented for subtle change in global attitudes. Across the world, these
two initiatives with information and communication technologies (ICTs) have ushered an era of information exchange; changing political, economic,
and social structure forever. e–Governance and right to information (RTI) are being recognised as potential tools of empowerment. Right to information
Act 2005 has been enacted with a view to promote openness, transparency and accountability in public administration. To achieve these objectives it is
very important that the RTI Act should provide right to citizens to ask for matters pertaining to governmental functioning through on line. Hence, this

The Debate About Information Freedom

  • 1. The Debate About Information Freedom Pros and cons of WikiLeak The debate about information freedom has become fiercely contested with the advent of WikiLeaks. Wikileaks is a non–profit organization which collects original resources and publishes on the website. It provides a secure platform for whistleblowers. Some people consider Julian Assange (leader of WikiLeaks) as a hero who has provided a platform to uncover the truth. This essay discusses the pros and cons for the issue. In 1971, The NewYork Times and Washington Post newspapers convened hundreds of people from the politics, press, law and academia, spending 20 days, in order to expose a secret document with 47 volumes and 7000 pages to the public (Douglas 2011). However, 39 years later, on 28th November 2010, according to its official website, WikiLeaks released 251,287 United States embassy cables, including 15,652 secret classified cables in one night. It claims that it is the largest activity ever to publish large–scale documents(Wikileaks, 2010). It is acknowledged that internet strengthens the power of a single group to spread an idea and reveal the truth. Based on the open platform, small groups or individuals, like Wikileaks, play greater roles in the information freedom. The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) announces an official statement on its website which declares that Wikileaks is crucial to assist keeping government and corporations transparent (APC, 2010). As is stated on its website, the goal of WikiLeaks is to bring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Freedom Of Information Act proceedings remains subject to the will of that government which controls the data or the site. Since 1965, at the federal level, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has been the vital basis for access claims, many of which have been litigated with varying results. Among the nine statutory exemptions to a citizen's right of access under FOIA, those most likely to precipitate privacy tensions are Exemptions 6 and 7c. The first of these relates to information such as personnel and medical files, the disclosure of which would "constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy." Exemption 7c excludes records or information compiled for law enforcement purposes, "but only to the extent that the production of such [materials] ... could reasonably be expected to constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy." In the major decision construing and applying Exemption 7c, United States Department of Justice v. Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, 489 U.S. 749 (1989), the Supreme Court noted the need, under the statute, to balance the interests of openness and accountability against the statutory recognition of individual privacy. The justices unanimously rejected claims of access to a suspect's rap sheet, noting the vital distinction (in FOIA) between the statute's "purpose to ensure that the Government's activities be opened to the sharp eye of public scrutiny" and the contrasting claim that "information about private citizens that happens to be in the ... • 3. Freedom Of Information, Opinion And Expression 12 Years A Slave and Hunger two are films by highly acclaimed director Steve McQueen. 12 years a Slave deals with the inequality and injustice that shook the African American Nation before the civil war. The film forces viewers to face the harsh reality of slavery while also being an unflinching look at human brutality and is an incredibly vivid and authentic portrayal of American slavery. His other film, Hunger, deals with the political injustice and unfairness experienced by the Northern Ireland republican prisoners, who were refused to be labelled as political prisoners; including the lengths that they were willing to go to in order to receive justice and freedom of information, opinion and expression. The two films have a common theme of facing and overcoming injustice and inequality, which can be seen as a reflection on McQueen's values and highlight the experiences and unjust and often unfair lifestyle that McQueen experienced while growing up and becoming the artist he is today. McQueens first full length feature film, Hunger, begins with a prison officer, Raymon Lohan, starting to begin his journey to work. The audience is shown glimpses into his every day routines, including washing his bloody knuckles, having a cigarette and searching the underside of his car for possible bombs. Through these clips Margaret Thatchers condescending tone rings over the short snapshots of daily life for Lohan. "There 's no such thing as political murder, political bombing or ... • 4. The Media As A Valuable Outlet For Free Expression The social media as a valuable outlet for free expression Introduction The communications and media landscape is experiencing a profound and fast transformation. There is a possibility of describing the evolution and development of new technologies as enterprising and open. The internet comprises of the considered technological developments, which is the latest outlet that a considerable number of people in the world can access and use to communicate (Maras 3). Just as other technologies before it, the internet has the power to transform the manner in which people realize the freedom to express themselves. Any person that can access the internet can create, share or edit their individual information or other people's content. The flare–up of digital communication, especially through the social media allows citizens to participate in public debates on a level unparalleled historically. The right to free expression rests upon public communication platforms, which is essential for the realization of the desired effects. Increasingly, the social media is playing its role as a platform through which individuals can express their wide range views to a considerable number of people. Through the social media, users can create and shape information. For this reason, the social media is becoming a viral actor by encouraging people to center their attention to particular issues. • 5. Charlottesville Protests Argument Analysis Since the beginning of the Internet's birth as ARPANET in 1969, communication has improved massively. As with all great wonders there comes a cost–the Internet is slowly becoming much more regulated and observed. With the Internet, the government, whether it be local or national, is slowly progressing towards an Orwellian future. It is extremely difficult to situate borders for privacy, and that brings multiple questions to the table. Is it moral to allow people like white supremacists an unchecked platform to offer their ideas? Is it okay for the government to censor content it deems immoral? Will observing and profiling people actually help counter any threat of terrorism? In order for such significant issues to be dealt with, we the people must learn to adapt.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within a few weeks after these events, multiple Silicon Valley companies had employed different methods to remove any mention of the neo –Nazi publication The Daily Stormer. Consequently, Google had chosen to remove any links to the site and GoDaddy revoked the website domain name. Richard Spencer, a famous white supremacist, believes only the hands of the government can actually intervene with an issue of this scale. Jillian York, director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation feels that the morality of preventing certain people from having a platform should not be discussed at the moment, and on the contrary, there should be a conversation on "who gets to decide that." Silicon Valley companies must be the party to provide a neutral ground for people across the belief spectrum. Networks should enforce rules and regulations strong enough to allow free speech for people with clashing viewpoints to debate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Censorship Freedom Of The Internet Censorship the Freedom of the Internet? The government controls much of what we can and can't do, and also how and when we do it. For instance "taxes", we all have to pay a certain amount to the government on a specific day where the IRS and their officials can determine how much we have to pay. The state control our cars through smog checks and how fast we can drive on the roads through tickets and fines. When the government has all of this control over us, should we give them more power? A power to control what is allowed to be posted or entered into one of the greatest informational tools in the history of mankind? The answer is simply no; they should not be allowed that power. In the wise words of Benjamin Franklin "those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one" If we give the government the power to censor the internet, we have lost the right for freedom of speech, expression, and other ability's that we will lose having big brother hold our hand as we navigate through the massive index that is know as the internet. The Internet is a great tool and essential in every day lives but it can also be a very dangerous thing if you are not careful. But the same thing goes for every other tool such as a hammer or a nail gun. Everything just has to be used properly in the way that is intended by each individual user in the way that the creator wanted the website/anything to use it. No one should be told they can't post or upload ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Censorship Essay Censorship is defined as the act or practice of removing obscene, vulgar, and highly objectionable material from things we encounter every day. Whether it is on TV, in music, books, or on the Internet censorship is an inescapable part of our lives. Free expression is one of the basic roots that are country is based on, although this right is constantly challenged and contested. The Communications Decency Act was passed by congress on February 1st 1996. This act sent shockwaves throughout the Internet community. So the bottom line is that any person who crosses the so–called line of "indecency" will be subject to a two–year prison sentence and substantial fines. There is no question that the internet has had a tremendous impact on today's society. The internet was first invented in the early 1960's with the intention of enhancing the computers used by our nation's military. This first form of internet was named "Arpanet" and was successfully established in the 1970. In its early stages Arpanet could only be seen at military bases and a few college campuses. As time went on many private companies began to show interest in the internet as its popularity was steadily growing. The number of host computers which store information and relay communications to internet users went from 23 hosts in 1971 to 10 million hosts in 1996. Today approximately 200 million people in over 150 countries are connected to the internet. As a new generation grows up as accustomed to communicating through a keyboard, life on the Internet will become an increasingly important part of life on Earth.2 President Clinton signed the Communications Decency Act on February, 8th 1996 sparking a great debate over the constitutionality of the act. • 8. Vinton Cerf's Argument Analysis Op–Ed Contributor Vinton Cerf, a renowned computer scientist has authored an article for the New York Times opposing the Internets status as a human right. While Cerf, as much as anyone, recognizes the impact of the Internet, his argument stems from a purely mechanical standpoint and fails to depict the Internet in any kind of humanistic light. Access to public information should never be transgressed on. Far more than any other technology, the Internet should be regarded and protected as a civil right because it permits individuals ubiquitously to practice free speech. However, the central human right to recognize here, is not the right to have a horse, but the observable right to make a living. Every man or woman has a fundamental liberty to work at there own stride to better themselves. While technologies are often a divisionary status between people, it does not mean that any piece of tech is necessarily a human right. Human rights must be fundamental to our existence, like obtainable food or water. Access to things like electricity, the internet, or even a wheel are not. Cerf makes a very solid point in this regard. The second point made is less valid, admittedly so. It states that the Internet is merely a tool not to be considered a civil right at all. Reading, "Internet access is always just a tool for obtaining something else more important," though he does admit, "the argument that it is a civil right is ... a stronger one than that it is a human right." This is the point that I feel that I must break off from his viewpoint. Civil rights, which safeguard our personal liberties, are extensive and ever–changing because information technology distends the intricacy of communicated needs and the knowledge base necessary to complete civic duties. This is made inherently clearer now by present day challenges ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Importance Of Monitoring The Internet In the United States of America, we enjoy many freedoms such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Today, we could rightly add freedom of internet use. However, with every freedom comes those who would abuse it. Cyberbullies, hackers, ransomware users, etc. Does this abuse of the internet indicate that the U.S. Government has a duty to protect its citizens by monitoring internet content? Unless and until we give up our freedom of the internet the duty of monitoring it is ours. Giving that responsibility to the government would actually pose several problems as well as a solution. For one thing, the government does not have the ability to personally read and check everything that is said or done on the internet. That being said, monitoring would be done using a key word system. Words such as blast, bomb, ammo, and guns could cause the user to either investigated or the context of the phase or word would have to be personally read and evaluated. This would pose a problem of personal privacy. Also, if the monitors were human, they would have to be completely non–biased have a standard of right and wrong. Furthermore, hiding messages through internet encryption would be relatively simple for many people. Another concern is the government takeover of the media. Since many news broadcasters use the internet as their broadcasting service it would be trivially easy for the government to control news output. With all that in mind, the internet should not go unmonitored. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Should Federal Government Be Allowed To Regulate... Living in the twenty first century we are all exposed to things we wish we were not or things our parents wish we had not been exposed to. Things like porn, cyberbullying, and invasion of privacy are a very real thing of today even more than it has been in the past years because our society is very technology based and as consumers we can get our hands on anything we desire as long as we have a connection to the internet. Does this mean that the federal government should be allowed to regulate information on the internet? Government officials may want to regulate the internet but no matter how hard they try it will be nearly impossible to complete because of how rapid the internet it growing. So many different sites are created everyday there is no way of keeping up with how many there are or how big the internet actually is. Not only is the internet an ever changing ... The first amendment to the United States Constitution says that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech." As citizens, we have the freedom of speech. Sometimes that freedom is taken to the extreme, especially in the case of the internet. If the government regulates what is displayed on the web and who can access things, is that not taking away out rights? We are protected in the constitution, and regulating the internet is not only taking away our freedom of expression or speech, but also out privacy. Some argue that the government regulating the internet is like securing the internet and keeping us safe, but on other's stand point, they are also keeping things away from us that we could normally access through the ... In simple words Internet of Things is about physical items talking to each other. Internet of things (IOT) can be defined as a computing concept where every–day physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify themselves to other devices. It is an integrated relationship between generic objects and the virtual world in which both can communicate and exchange data and information. It keeps the objects interconnected, which can be identified by some assigned codes, names, locations, shapes or addresses. INTRODUCTION After experiencing a difficult time in New Order era (1966–1998), when the civil rights to freely obtain information had been abused by the government at that time, a glimmer of hope emerged when the government enact a new Act regarding Public Freedom of Information in 2008 (Act number 14). Public entity is a body that obliged to give the informations to the public. In article 1 of Act number 14 year 2008, it is mentioned that the definition of public entity is an institution of executive, legislative, judicative, and other institutions with the function relating to the state administrative or non–government institution of which receives budget from the state or from donation. The act itself does not regulate about the obligation of any private business entities that is under contract with public entity, considering many cases occured because of private entities claim to acting on behalf of the government to obtain certain legal permit. Though many people use the internet to enhance their learning or to communicate, then there are number of people sending hate speech or sending threats out in the open web with nothing to worry about. Used wisely, this technology can help shift control of and responsibility for harmful content from governments, regulatory agencies, and supervisory bodies to individuals" (Pg.9). These limitations are kept so as in the public interest. The right to fair trial is nearly related to freedom of expression, as it also limits access to search for information. The right to freedom of expression is actually important for the media or the printing press, because these organizations are considered to be the 'Voice of People'. The actual work of the media is to awaken the people from wrongful justice. The freedom of press is considered as the most valuable right in definitely a democratic society. The freedom to press works upon thefreedom of speech and expression, taking along the John Milton's arguments of considering the access towards information and ideas. The media plays an important factor in a democratic society, as it plays a special role as the barrier of the general right in the freedom of expression. There are also some criticisms regarding the right to freedom of press. Judith Litchenberg has marked some circumstances in which freedom of press may restrain freedom of speech. For example, ther's a condition where the press just crushes the information which is genuinely meant to reach the public may get to the public which some or the other specimens in it. • 16. The Importance Of Hate Speech On The Internet I will examine the difficulties of regulating hate speech on the internet through legal and technological frameworks for Japan and the United States. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes the freedom of expression as a human right. But the freedom of expression on the internet is subject to certain limitations. The Internet is not devoid of different forms of deviant behavior (such as hate speech), which incite discrimination, hatred or violence against groups or individuals on the basis of their personal attributes. The anonymity and mobility provided by the Internet has made harassment and expressions of hate effortless and undetectable. Hate speech on the Internet is a growing problem for the United States and Japan because it is targeting individuals on the basis of personal characteristics. Brown (2017) argues that cyberhate has three different qualities: anonymity in the sense that individuals are not compelled to reveal aspects of their offline identity unless they wish to do so; invisibility there is a physical distance between speaker and audience; instantaneousness provides people with almost instantaneous publishing. The justification for promoting speech is founded on a concern for the facilitation of discourse democracy, while the rationale for preventing harm is based on a concern for human dignity. Koontz (2017) cites the case of City of Yokosuka v. Lee Sin as an example that Japan needs to redraft the act in order to redefine hate speech on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People don't generally want intimate information to be accessible to the public eye. In fact many people go to great lengths to hide everything about themselves. What exactly is the definition of privacy ? Well, privacy is the expectation that confidential personal information disclosed in a private place will not be disclosed to third parties, when that disclosure would cause either embarassment or emotional distress to a person of reasonable sensitivities. • 18. Freedom: Digital and Literal Essay The internet has become an integral part of our lives, linking people overseas, transmitting ideas, and propelling innovation. In order to continue the innovations and links, governments and service providers should not regulate, restrict, or censor the internet. The internet, as it stands today, serves as a medium for our entertainment, communication, and commercial needs. It is something many of us have come to take for granted. The original intended purpose of the first "internet," however, goes back to the days of the Cold War where the ever looming threat of a nuclear missile attack prompted the U.S., as well as many other countries, to build a robust, fault–tolerant, and widely distributed computer network. Copyrighted works make up only a small fraction of the World Wide Web . To impose such far–reaching legislation will harm irrelevant law–abiding businesses. This year, the House tried passing the Stop Online Piracy Act, or "SOPA." At first glance, it appears to be a reasonable bill aimed to protect the works of artists and copyright holders. The bill, however, could easily create an atmosphere in which any individual may file a complaint and have any site removed, cutting off the site's revenue, if "pirated" content is found on the site, regardless of whether or not the site's owners were the ones that uploaded the file. In effect, "SOPA kills the safe harbor in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act," (Dignan) which protects sites as long as they act in good faith and do all in their power to actively remove illegal content under copyright. Under SOPA, the process required to respond to litigation or a complaint would likely absorb an average small host's entire yearly profit. Given the small business nature of the hosting industry, hosting businesses are not in a position to absorb the litigation costs associated with SOPA. These legal ramifications should be extended to people in authority who use information from the internet to get to their subordinates. The internet has radically changed the way we get and disseminate information. The internet is a place to express free speech and just be yourself, but this has many times come back to hunt users in a negative way. This paper will be looking at how schools, workplaces, and even other users misuse the idea of free speech on the internet and why we need to filter hate speech and introduce legal ramifications for these actions. Some schools have used their authorities to discipline students and teachers over things they posted on the internet from the privacy of their homes and on their private time. In America, students are not supposed to lose their constitutional rights "at the schoolhouse gate." The protection of students' rights to free speech and privacy in and out of school is essential for ensuring that schools provide both valuable education and training in our democratic values. Unfortunately, schools continue to demonstrate a troubling willingness to cut back on students' rights. Then–Deputy Administrator Robert Perciasepe had sent a work–related e–mail from his personal account, which was included in the FOIA response package. This seemingly minor event became a significant concern; using personal e–mail to conduct federal business could be an innocent mistake or a convenient alternative to using a government e–mail account, but it could also be an attempt to circumvent federal records laws. Regardless of actual intent, Perciasepe's e–mail proved that personal accounts were used by a federal employee conducting official business in at least that one circumstance. Landmark sought clarity on this in a meeting with the EPA in March 2013 and later on in various briefs and responses, but the EPA never directly responded to that point. In August, presiding U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth issued an opinion stating the EPA's "failure to deny the allegations that personal accounts were being used to conduct official business leaves open the possibility that they were." Accompanying the opinion was an order permitting Landmark to conduct discovery limited to the following issues: whether and to what extent the EPA administrator, deputy administrator and/or chief of staff utilized personal e–mail accounts to conduct official business during the relevant time periods and whether the EPA intentionally excluded those personnel from the FOIA request response. • 23. Persuasive Essay On Net Neutrality The fight for net neutrality has begun again with the FCC attempting to repeal the net neutrality act protected under Title Two. what exactly does that mean? Net neutrality is where an internet user has total unrestricted access to all internet content, and where big companies, such as Verizon or Comcast, are legally unable to control or regulate what someone can access. Furthermore, they cannot restrict access to specific content simply due to the fact that they disagree with the message that is being sent. This has been an ongoing battle, with one side voting against net neutrality, as they believe it to be exactly what everyone needs and the other seeing it as a breach of their right to freedom of speech. Federal Communications Commission, otherwise known as the FCC, voted two–to–one in May of 2017, to begin the tearing down of the net neutrality law (Rushe), that which protected individuals from companies that purposefully slowed down service lanes so as to regulate what was being broadcasted across computers. Chief internet official Ajit Pai at the FCC stated that he believed that the dismantling of the net neutrality laws could pave the way for a more competitive marketplace, that which would "lift 'heavy–handed' internet regulations that overly restricted internet providers" (White). The repealing of net neutrality seems to mainly garner approval from big companies, such as Verizon, and more recently, Comcast, companies that would do well by the repealing of such a law. With net neutrality gone companies such as those listed above would be able to, legally, regulate and control what people saw on the internet by slowing down or speeding up lanes depending on the affiliation the company has with that specific website (Finley). However, even with Title II in effect, some companies have found a way to circumvent those rules in order to 'play favorites' as it were. For instance, when AT&T customers access the Direct TV's streaming service they may find that the data extrapolated from the service used did not count towards their current data limit's (Finley). It is also believed that with no regulations in place regarding net neutrality, companies have the potential of becoming dictators and blocking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Freedom of Information Act has made sure that all agencies are open to the American public in the information that they deal with. The Freedom of Information Act is such a vital tool for the people of the United States because it gives the American people the right to see what is going on in the government. When this bill was first placed in front of President Lyndon B. Johnson, he did not sign it. It was revised and the Senate had to pass its own version before President Johnson decided to pass the bill in to a law. The House of Representatives passed this bill with a vote of three hundred and seven to zero. I think that the Freedom of Information Act did fulfill its goal. Hundreds of FOIA requests are made each year to the government. This is not only significant for the people knowing what is going on in the government but it is significant to the people who work for the government because then they can't hide as much stuff from the people ... • 34. Future Of Reputation By David Solove From that AOL software CD that arrived via snail mail, to those elaborate HTML backgrounds on Myspace, to today's latest social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the Internet has steadily been growing and influencing society for over twenty years now. This impact has further complicated the balance between privacy and free speech. At the core of this debate is how reputations are affected by rumors, gossip, and shaming across the internet. In his book, future of reputation, David Solove argues, while technologies are constantly changing, human nature remains steadfast. The law must meet the challenge to address these ever–changing technologies' effect on one's reputation and strive to protect the privacy while ensuring the freedom of speech. Consider the case of a twenty–three–year–old Yale student who desired to be an investment banker. The ambitious man named Aleksey took an unorthodox route to secure employment with global financial giant UBS. Along with his rather a long eleven–page resume, he made a seven–minute video of himself and titled it, "Impossible is Nothing." Clearly, the sole purpose of the video was to secure employment with UBS. Even though much of the content, exercising and dancing, had nothing to do with investment banking, Aleksey thought it would help him to stand out and separate from the pack. Nowhere did he express the content was About a week after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995open for public view and submitted to HR in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Usually, his contributions to this widely–read site consisted of short stories about rape, torture, and murder of women. In this particular newsgroup post, he continued with his usual contributions; however, he took it a bit further by writing about one of his fellow classmates, using her name and identity in the piece. Faculty members at the University of Michigan discovered his story and later expelled him from school. Federal agents then raided his house, arrested him, and discovered copies of e–mail Baker had exchanged with a Canadian, mapping out his and the Canadian's plan to ... But according to the First Amendment and federal law, Baker's threats were "unsuccessful;" therefore, no action could've (or should've) been taken against him. In thinking about cases such as Jake Baker's, it truly would be too difficult to enforce United States standards and regulations on a global medium such as the Internet. There are probably millions of sites out there on the Web that contain such sexual content as did Baker's story. As one University of Michigan student mentions, "The Internet allows individuals access to a larger audience. This effectively gave Baker a larger audience for his stories, which otherwise would have never seen them....I definitely question the wisdom of allowing just anyone access to such publishing power...but I'm not sure that I even consider Usenet news as real media" (http://krusty.eecs.umich.edu/). The same student goes on to say that Baker's stories were reserved only for a section entitled "alt.sex.stories" –– a place filled with sexually explicit stories –– therefore, Baker had the right to publish his offensive sex stories, since it was contained within this separate Internet section. Usenet news may not be "real media," but I still think that the Internet would be too difficult to censor entirely, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That's it. But this vague definition is also the reason for its marvelous, uncontrollable diffusion, and evolution. Absolutely no boundaries were ever set with the internet. And since the memory in our computer kept on increasing exponentially, these small pieces of data, first transferred, 20 years ago, turned into pictures, sound, books, shows, movies. This enormous and we could say endless possibility of transfer offered by the internet with no boundaries at all, well it redefined the concept of a material object, the concept of diffusion. In fact, the internet has literally removed a variable part of business communication. The time taken to send or receive information isn't a preoccupation anymore. For example, the drawings and the characteristics of a tool can be discussed between the engineering unit in the US, and the production factory in China. And that includes exchanges of pictures, designs, figures of production cost, business plan... etc! Very soon in the explosion of internet, various companies helped provide the demassification of internet. But this demassiffication would be like no other before. A regular demassification process affects genre, selects viewers, and slices its general content to a more specified one, to match the taste of their customers. The internet was totally different, by giving the publishing tools directly in the hands of users, and an easy but revolutionary statement could be made: "One user on the internet = one content" The internet doesn't battle over frequencies, over rights of emission; all the diffusing technology needed is already built in. Coming back to the demassification of internet, the providers of user content cut off the last technological boundary remaining between the user, and the publication.
