1. Using historical and
contemporary
research
Unit 9
Contextual References
A research into historical
and contemporary work,
showing understanding of
the contexts which
influenced the work .
What have you learned about
the influences on other’s work?
B recording and presenting
information explaining the
use of visual language in
others’ work.
Where have you analysed
examples? What did you learn?
C use of contextual
references in own work.
How have you used
references? What impact did
they have on your ideas?
• A) I have done research into three other artists
work. Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo Da
Vinci, Charles West Cope and Derek Hill. I learned
that the work of others can influence you and give
you a number of ideas that you can keep in mind
whilst doing the project. They influence you to
come up with ideas, or maybe use their ideas in
your own work and take it forward and develop it
whilst you are at the process. The influence on
others work shows how you can broaden your
range of ideas and come up with new ones whilst
you are in the process.
• B) I have analysed all the work that I have found
in my sketchbook and wrote down what I like and
dislike about each one of them. I learned how to
use the work that I found and bring it forward and
develop it into the final piece. I realised how you
can use the work that you found in your final
piece, and if not the final piece, explain why you
aren’t going to use it. I have analysed and made
artists copies and have come up with an artist
response for each one where I try their style on
the location that I was given.
• C) I haven’t used much references as I only have
3 artists within my sketchbook. Maybe next time I
can spend more time into researching for artists
and finding different painting and drawing styles as
to what I can use for my final piece, and what I will
not use for it as well. But the references that I have
used, which is the work of three other artists,
made me think about which ones I will use at my
final piece, as I found two of them really
interesting. Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet have
different painting styles and I decided later on in
the project to use their painting styles for my final
piece.
2. Location studies
All Pathways- Fine Art,
Design, Multimedia
A recording of experiences
or information to develop
intentions
What approaches did you
use to examine and record
your location?
Representing the space;
details; light etc. How did
you decide and which
worked the best? Why?
B use of materials,
processes and technology
or a combination of
materials, processes and
technology to develop
ideas
What did you learn through
your initial enquiries?
Experiments and
techniques, use of an
experimental process to
generate new ideas,
suitability of some rather
than others?
• A) I have used a variety of processes
and materials to examine and record
the location that I was given. I took
photos of the area as well so that I can
explain why I have chosen this location
and explained how the location can be
used in relation to the brief. I used
charcoal, pencil, ink, paints, crayons,
chalk etc. And I decided at the end that
the best way of representing all the
aspects of the location (space, light etc.)
is through the use of paints. This is
because paints can get the colour and
shadows right. And also the fact that
the two artists I have chosen as used
paints to create their pieces of art, I felt
as if it would only be right if I did too.
Cubism (Pablo Picasso) is one style of
art that would be best using paints and I
felt so too, so I decided that I would go
with paints for this project.
• B) Throughout the project I leaned
that I should learn not to limit myself on
the materials that I already know how
to use. Instead I should maybe try new
forms of art work that I haven’t done
before (Maybe do this on the next
project). I should also experiment more
in order to gain a variety of ideas that I
could bring forward and develop into a
final piece. In some occasions, I should
also explain why I am going to, or why I
am going to not use the artists style of
painting in my final piece as this will
give me a better understanding of what
I can do with their work.
3. Making and
developmental work -
(Test piece, studies from 3D
model)
Unit 12 (Fine Art)
A recording of experiences or
information to develop
intentions
What approaches did you use
to examine and record your
location? Representing the
space; details; light etc. How
did you decide and which
worked the best? Why?
B use of materials, processes
and technology or a
combination of materials,
processes and technology to
develop ideas
What did you learn through
your initial enquiries?
Experiments and techniques,
use of an experimental
process to generate new
ideas, suitability of some
rather than others?
• A) I have examined and recorded
through the use of other artists
styles. That from Leonardo Da
Vinci, Pablo Picasso and Claude
Monet. Monet and Picasso both
use painting, and their styles
would look best whilst using
paints. I tested out Pablo Picasso’s
work using crayons and it did not
turn out as well as I expected it to
go, so I decided that paints would
be best. The brief that I designed
also explains that I should make a
painting that shows how nature is
losing its value within human life,
and I decided that the best way to
show this would be cubism as
cubism looks like an object is
coming apart, so using cubism on
the nature parts of the location
would be best.
• B) In my initial enquiries, I
learned that spending more time
on researching into others work
will be all the more useful. So
maybe on the next project I can
give myself a minimum of 6 other
artists that I can learn from and
develop ideas from in order to get
my final piece on the best quality
that it is possible to get. Maybe I
can even do more than the
minimum to increase the range of
ideas that I can come up with.
4. Unit 11 Develop &
Produce Own Ideas
B create and develop ideas
in response to the brief.
How did you interpret your
brief? What different
approaches to the same
theme did you explore?
What decisions did you
make to refine your ideas?
A plan and produce final
outcome using specialist
working methods and
processes.
How did you decide on the
final outcome? Why was
this the best approach?
How did you choose the
techniques you’ve used?
Did they work effectively?
Developing your
personal brief
• A) I did the fine art part of the brief
and decided to come up with a
painting that shows how nature is
slowly losing its value within human
life. To refine my ideas, I made use
of initial ideas and prototypes, that
way I can show a clear
understanding of what I am thinking
and how I can develop these made
ideas into a final piece. In the end, I
decided to use the prototype that
makes all nature aspects in the form
of cubism as this looks like as if the
tree is coming apart whereas
everything else is intact. This is the
decision I made because it answers
the brief as well as comes into the
form of fine art. I also made a sketch
model that I can work from instead
of working from photographs.
• B) As I stated, I decided to use the
prototype that uses all aspects of
nature in the form of Pablo Picasso’s
cubism. This way it shows how
nature is slowly fading away. The
fact that there are man-made
objects behind the tree (fences and
two warehouses) painted in style of
Claude Monet, shows that they are
still intact whilst the nature aspect is
slowly breaking apart. The
techniques that I have used to
produce my final outcome have
worked effectively, but I could’ve
added more man-made objects into
the background of the tree as this
would’ve given it more impact as it
shows how one tree in surrounded
by a range of man-made objects.
5. EVALUATION
GENERAL (Project Overall):
The theme of this project was called a place in question, I have used many different ideas that can relate
to the theme such as using artists work as a starting point of the brief. I made some initial drawings from
a location that I am going to be using for the brief. However, I should have done more and spent more
time on the sketchbook as I made myself limited to only 3 reference materials. I have looked at Claude
Monet, Leonardo Da Vinci and Pablo Picasso as my three reference points from which I can be inspired
from. I have used a range of material, such as chalk, paints, ink, charcoal and crayon which has helped me
get an idea as to what I can use in the next project and what I am good and bad at. During the project, I
developed my charcoal drawing by trying out the technique of Leonardo da Vinci. I have also increased my
painting skills as I have used the work of Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso to help me develop it. If I were
to go back into the project, I would spend more time on it as well as dedicate myself more to it as I feel
like I have not done this to the best of my ability.
FINAL PIECE:
For my final piece, I have used the painting style of two artists, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, and
mixed their painting styles into one painting. I used paints because this is what I have been looking into,
the cubism aspect of the final piece went well, and I am happy with the final outcome. The message that I
wanted to get through is to show how nature is slowly losing its value, by using cubism on the nature
aspect of the location, this makes it like as if it is breaking into pieces and coming apart whereas
everything else is intact. If I were to change something, it would be the time that I have spent actually
creating piece, as I have rushed it a little, that way it could be up to a good quality standard and help me
satisfy myself for the project.
