2. 1. He was born in the Italian seaport of
Genoa in 1451,to a family of wool
weavers.
2. As a child he helped his father at the loom
and as a young lad he set to sea.
3. He became an experienced sailor and
moved to Lisbon in Portugal to try and
gain support for a new journey he was
planning.
3. 4. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the
Europeans wanted to find sea routes to
the sea.
5. He wanted to find a new route to the far
east, to India, China, Japan, and the Spice
Islands.
6. If he could reach these lands he would
bring back rich cargoes of silks and
spices.
4. 7. In 1492 he set sail from Palos Spain with
3 ships.
8. The ships were the Nina, the Pinta and
the Santa Maria.
9. After sailing across the Antlantic ocean for
10 weeks land was sighted by a sailor
named Rodrigo Bernajo.
10. He claimed the island for the queen and
king of Spain.
5. 11. On Christmas day 1492 the Santa Maria
hit a rock and was wrecked.
12. He transferred to the Nina and left
behind the 39 crew members of the Santa
Maria on the island of Hispanlola.
13. He wanted them to start a new
settlement.
6. 14.He made 3 more journeys across the
ocean
15. He was sure that he found Japan but he
was still looking for India and the wealthy
cities.
16. he believed they were nearby.
7. 17. He reached Spain in March 1493 he
claimed his reward in riches.
18. He was also given new titles.
19. He was admiral of the ocean sea and
Governor of the Indies.

21. He died a lonely disappointed man.
22. He still did believe he found the new
route to East Indies.
