5. In-Depth Analysis of First 5
Minutes
The first shot shown is the boy, Thomas, dancing while
slow, dramatic music is played by non-diegetic sound. He is
in a room by himself to represent how he is hiding this
talent he has from his Dad. He is then shown walking home
alone. A voiceover is played over him walking home,
explaining how he is very passionate about dance. Once he
gets nearer his house, he decides to drop his bag and take
off his ballet clothes, revealing his boxing gear beneath. He
then puts his clothing into a bush on the road his house is
on to hide it from his family. He arrives home and his Dad
was waiting for him at the door, when he asks “How was
your boxing lesson?”, to which Thomas responds “It was
okay, I think I’m getting the hang of it now.”
6. Character Analysis
Thomas, the main character, is a 14 year old boy.
He is very independent and spends most of his
time alone. He attends school and is a very good
student; he is able to get good grades and behaves
well. The innocence of Thomas will help portray
how his Dad is morally in the wrong throughout
the film.
Thomas’ Dad is portrayed as the villain within the
film, as he is not supportive of Thomas using his
money for dance lessons.
