The Whole idea in this scene is that itis all mysterious and itportrays this across,the location of the scene is

character,this is also supported by the factthat the shot is on an angle makinglector seem that much more
dominant and threatening towering over Clarice.The prison is underground meaning daylightis never seen
and this really reflects upon the souls of the inhabitants which residethere, the souls arethose of dark
ruthless killers meaningthis character mustbe the villain of the movie or have some play in the evil acts that
take partin it. The lightingis very dark and dull and this represents and portrays a senseof evil, which as it
seems this character is,otherwise he wouldn’t be behind glass,this means that he committed some
unspeakableacts to be treated this way, the connotation of Black is its associated with power which is what
this scene is tryingto portray across with this character,makinghim seem the more powerful and dangerous
of the two. Lector is pushed up againstthe glass and this could bea fores hadowment of sorts, later suggesting
that he will get out which really shows of the characters dedication and patientas he leans their calmly against
the glass.The glass issee-through and this of coursemakes Lector seem likean animal and his cagethat of a
zoos, the movie does this intentionally makingus DE animalisethis character suggestingthat he is not human
so we relate more with Clariceand root for her. Although we now see Lector as an animal,he is wearingthe
colour blue, Blueis strongly associated with tranquillity and calmness so why would a killer bewearing this
because this is donetoo even further his ruthlessnessso we as an audiencesee him as beingmore threatening
in his silencethan if he was constantly speaking,we feel more threatened by the unspeakable.This is opposed
by Claricewho is wearingbrown which represents wholesomeness and honesty, the scene does this so we
instantly recognisethem as opposingcharacters of the same coin.Claricehas a briefcasemeaningthat she
means business so you can tell that this is goingto be an important establishingsceneand that these
characters aregoingto be the most important, this is also shown as they are the only two on screen and they
are cantered perfectly.
