Taking into account my personal teaching context, what would
be the advantages and disadvantages of using the ELP with my
groups?
For me the European Language Portfolio (ELP) have more advantages than
disadvantages. The ELP is a personal document of a student where they can
record their language learning and cultural experience at school or outside
school. A learner using the ELP takes over ownership of his learning process.
He develops strategies to plan, monitor and evaluate his own learning, making
the learning process more effective. In this way the ELP:
• Helps to develop language learning and intercultural skills
• Facilitates mobility
• Encourages lifelong learning of languages
This ELP also have benefits and advantages for the teacher, for example:
• to make the language learning process more transparent to learners and
to foster the development of learner autonomy (self-assesment).
• The reflection and self-assessment play a central role provide a focus
for research on such topics as learner attitudes and motivation, and the
impact of reflective practice on target language proficiency.
And talking about disadvantages:
• If you want to use the ELP in your class or your school, you have to train
teachers and students in order to use it correctly.
• It isn't suitable for all levels, so you have to adapt it to the characteristics
of your pupils level.
• The students could be frustrated if they do the same effort but their
progress is not as big as their classmates progress.
