2. Networking
• By using net connectivity, teachers of English
share their ideas & enrich their teaching.
• The Special Interest Groups (SIG), Support
groups, discussion, chat room, etc. have
contributed to the enhancement of teachers’
career.
• Online ELT resources & newsletters are used
extensively by teachers. They do not depend
heavily on the knowledge generated by
‘experts’.
3. Eclecticism
• ELT practitioners often practice the hybrid of
more than one method of teaching.
• Eclecticism refers to selecting a set of ideas
from various methods for effective teaching
learning process.
• When teachers subscribe to the pluralistic
view of methods, pick & choose from among
methods to create their won blend, there is
said to be eclectic (Larsen-Freeman 2004)
4. Strategy Training
• Language teaching, nowadays, aims to make
them independent learners by giving
adequate practice in learning strategies.
• In fact, learners acquire the knowledge about
how to learn a language.
• Cooperative learning & multiple intelligences
teach them how to use learning strategies
while learning a language.
5. Learner centred classroom
• Teacher is no longer authoritative and he is
also not the provider of knowledge. Lecture
method in language classes is losing its
significance.
• Learner centeredness is the demand of the
time. Teachers have to do various roles such
as guide, monitor, and facilitator.
• Pair work & group work are given importance.
6. Reflective practice
• Reflective teaching is a process where teachers
think over their teaching practices, analyzing how
something was taught and how the practice
might be improved or changed for better learning
outcomes.
• Teachers explore their own practice of teaching.
It is a systematic analysis to find out how we
could do things differently or better.
• Reflecting our own way of teaching helps the
teachers to improve their practice.
• They get an idea about how they are teaching
and find out the ways to improve their teaching.
7. Rethinking goals
• Teachers rethink of the goal of English
teaching in view of globalization.
• In the past, a lot of emphasis was on grammar
teaching & linguistic competence.
• Now the emphasis is on communicative
competence. Communication skills need to be
given importance. Teachers have to rely on
techniques & methods that are conducive to
improve communication skills.
8. Updating knowledge
• Conferencing is one of the best means of
enhancing knowledge in ELT. Teachers
participate in seminars, conferences,
workshops, and training in order to grow
academically.
• It helps them to update their knowledge on
latest research and learn new techniques &
methods. Besides, journal articles also help
them in this regard.
9. Locally produced materials
• Instructional materials produced in foreign
countries may not be effective in other
countries.
• Nowadays, each country produces its own
material that suits their own soil, culture, &
values.
• Imported language teaching materials are in
no way practicable since they do not fulfill the
local needs of the students.
10. Post-method era
• The methodologists are in search of more
effective methods of teaching foreign
languages. It is a fact that no method is a
panacea for the solution of ELT problems.
• According to Brown (1994), the era of method
is over. In post-method era, teachers think of
effective techniques & language activities to
ensure better learning process.
14. E-learning
• With the proliferation of tablets & smart
phones, printed learning materials and
traditional mode of teaching will lose their
significance gradually.
• The access to knowledge in terms of flexibility
& mobility has changed drastically. Therefore,
online courses & web-based language learning
courses will be extensively used in the future.
15. E-mail
• E-mail has revolutionized the communication
process since it is a fast & inexpensive mode
of communication.
• Teachers can utilize this one for giving their
feedback and suggestions on student
assignments & also for sending learning
materials for the students.
16. Blogs
• A blog is a personal or professional journal
frequently updated for public consumption.
• Pinkman (2005) indicates blogging becomes
communicative & interactive when participants
assume multiple roles in the writing process, as
readers/reviewers who respond to other writers’
posts.
• The readers can in turn can comment on what
they read, although blogs can be placed in
secured environment as well.
17. Skype
• Skype allows users to communicate over the
Internet by voice using a microphone, by
video using a webcam, and by instant
messaging. Skype-to-Skype calls to other users
are free of charge.
• It can be used by teachers to interact with the
students and ensure learning outside the
classroom.
Editor's Notes
To improve teaching – analyse his own teaching – feedback of the students – participation of the students
Emphasis on communicative competence – work place & academic situations
1) Because of tablets & smart phones; online courses & wbll are popular among people
