myths on language
learning, most of
which are
speculations which
cannot claim any sort
of scientific or logical
bases

So, we hereby make a glance at such myths, and
what really are the true factors about such myths,
shall we?
LET US HAVE GLANCE

Learning different
languages in the same
way i.e. by using the
language in one’s own
communication
Learning a second
language is an
entirely different
process from learning
one’s native
language.

Older Learners are more
effective than younger, as
language learning
requires more
understanding and
generalization
Younger children are
more
effective language
learners
than older learners

Foreign Language can be
learnt by using it in all
subject classrooms, as
language learning is a skill
developmental process
Foreign Language
can be learnt by
teaching it in an
exclusive class,
specially arranged for
it

and cultural
backgrounds are equally
capable of
learning English
Students from some
countries
are better language learners
than students from other
countries.

Content learning and
language learning should
go together, as it provides
more natural and dynamic
learning of language
Until students learn
English,
there is no point in trying
to
teach them content area
subjects.

Oral learning and learning
through printed materials
should go together for
better understanding of
language.
Learners need a strong
grasp
of oral English before they
are
exposed to print

from such social
backgrounds are more
effective communicators,
when given opportunity to
speak in their own language.
Deficit Theory
Students from poor
economic and cultural
background do struggle
when learning a new
language, as they are not
able to use even their mother
tongue effectively

grammar, not learning its
rules, is the key factor in
learning any language.( not
the terms, but the correcft
usage matters)
Language can be learnt only
by learning the grammatical
rules of a language.

Language learning: Myth and Reality

  • 2. There are plenty of myths on language learning, most of which are speculations which cannot claim any sort of scientific or logical bases By Hathib k.k.
  • 3. So, we hereby make a glance at such myths, and what really are the true factors about such myths, shall we? LET US HAVE GLANCE By Hathib k.k.
  • 4. Learning different languages in the same way i.e. by using the language in one’s own communication Learning a second language is an entirely different process from learning one’s native language. 1 By Hathib k.k.
  • 5. Older Learners are more effective than younger, as language learning requires more understanding and generalization Younger children are more effective language learners than older learners 2 By Hathib k.k.
  • 6. Foreign Language can be learnt by using it in all subject classrooms, as language learning is a skill developmental process Foreign Language can be learnt by teaching it in an exclusive class, specially arranged for it 3 By Hathib k.k.
  • 7. Students from all language and cultural backgrounds are equally capable of learning English Students from some countries are better language learners than students from other countries. 4 By Hathib k.k.
  • 8. Content learning and language learning should go together, as it provides more natural and dynamic learning of language Until students learn English, there is no point in trying to teach them content area subjects. 5 By Hathib k.k.
  • 9. Oral learning and learning through printed materials should go together for better understanding of language. Learners need a strong grasp of oral English before they are exposed to print 6 By Hathib k.k.
  • 10. Studies show that students from such social backgrounds are more effective communicators, when given opportunity to speak in their own language. Deficit Theory Students from poor economic and cultural background do struggle when learning a new language, as they are not able to use even their mother tongue effectively 7 By Hathib k.k.
  • 11. Usage of the accurate grammar, not learning its rules, is the key factor in learning any language.( not the terms, but the correcft usage matters) Language can be learnt only by learning the grammatical rules of a language. 7 By Hathib k.k.
