The solar system
1. THE SOLAR SYSTEM.
The Solar System consists of the Sun and all the objects
that orbit around it (eight planets and their moons,
comets and asteroids). They are all called celestial bodies.
2. THE SUN.
The Sun is an enormous
yellow star which provides
the light and heat
necessary for life on the
Earth.
The Sun is not still, it
rotates on its own
invisible axis.
The Sun is the largest celestial body. It is much bigger
than any planet and it is at the centre of the Solar
System
3. PLANETS.
There are eight large celestial
bodies in our Solar System
called planets..
Each planet rotates on its
own invisible axis and each
planet also orbits the Sun.
There are two kinds of
planets:
Terrestrials planets: They
are small and mainly
made up of rock. They are
Mercury, Venus, the Earth
and Mars.
Gas giants: They are large
and made up of gases. They
are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus
and Neptune.
4. MOONS, ASTEROIDS AND COMETS.
Natural satellites are smaller celestial bodies,
such as moons, which orbit their planets.
The Earth has got one Moon, but Jupiter, for
example, has got 28 Moons.
Asteroids are tiny rocky celestial bodies. In
our Solar System there are thousands of
them, and they have different shapes..
Comets are small celestial bodies made
up of ice, dust and rock. They have
bright tails which we can only see
them when they are close to the Sun.
5. And now look at the chart and learn more on our Solar System.
