1. Due Date: Monday, September 29th
Making the School Green with Math!
Students in Group:
In this simple math assignment, students are asked to use a series of
unrelated numbers and form an argument against the waste of paper towel.
In an effort to find beauty in numbers, students have been encouraged to
take a creative approach towards the presentation of their carefully
constructed argument.
Minimum Questions that Should be Analyzed:
1. How many towels are used in a day?
2. How many boxes of towels are used in a year?
3. How much does it cost for paper towel in a year?
Important Numbers:
Avg # of times towels are used in a day: 4; Avg # of towels that are used
per visit: 4; # of towels in a box: 4000; Cost of box: $29.50; Days in a
school year 188.
Lingley Math 8
Making the School Green With Math
(Paper Towel Project)
Expectations 3 (Meeting) 4 (Exceeding)
1. Calculations are well
developed.
Through the use of calculations,
students use the numbers
associated with the paper towel
waste to make a convincing
argument against the use.
Students use their multi-step
calculations to make a larger
statement about the waste using
numbers that impact the general
population.
2. Problem solving steps are
shown in detail.
On a separate piece of paper,
students will show each
calculation with a rationale for
why it is important in their
argument.
Students incorporate their
problem solving and explanation
creatively within their choice of
visual presentation of the details.
3. Reasonableness of Solutions Numbers will be large. Provide some evidence that they make sense.
4. Visual Presentation of
argument.
Math should be pretty. Students
have carefully chosen a visually
appealing way to show their
argument. The division between
calculations and the impact to the
environment is clear.
Students have carefully chosen a
method of visual presentation
that is creative, and thought
provoking and encourages the
audience to think about the
gravity of the numbers.
